Not a good game to watch
Turns out, a lot of people watched the Yankees season end on Friday. This is from a press release sent by the league.
Game 6 of the 2010 ALCS registered 11.86 million viewers making it the second most-viewed baseball game ever on cable television beating the game where Mark McGwire tied Roger Maris for the most home runs in a season on ESPN on September 7, 1998 (10.62 million viewers). Only the 2008 ALCS Game 7 between the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays registered more viewers (13.36 million) on cable.
Not exactly the kind of thing the Yankees were going for that night.
Also, for whatever it’s worth, this was the most watched LCS as a whole since 2007. It was the most-watched NLCS since 2006, and the most watched ALCS since TBS began airing the series in 2007.

Lot of star power in the two series and anytime the yankees are involved you get a ratings spike. There were a lot of good games in the NLCS as well. Wish all those people had seen the yanks win though.
WS ratings will be really low -
I think the WS ratings obviously will be much lower than they would have been if the yanks or phillies had been in there but hamilton and lincecum could draw some folks in. I think it may do ok.
agree, WS ratings won’t be great…higher if Yanks,Phils or even Braves made it…
and in NY area, no FOX.
I think Lee Vs. Lincecum will definitely draw a good number of viewers. a lot of my facebook friends said they were happy its not Yankees/Phillies. A lot of people don’t like those 2 teams and might be more willing to watch being they aren’t in it.
It should be a good series. Two good ballparks and some good pitching matchups. The rangers have better position players a pretty good margin but then so did the phillies when they played the giants. I will be pulling for the giants just in cas
e winning the world series would have some impact on cliff lee’s decision
Giants vs Rangers is definitely good for the game. As a baseball fan I appreciate more teams being in the fray, it keeps the game fun and interesting.
That said it also provides more motivation for the Yankees to come back and win it next year.
Im watching the packers/vikings game and they were talking about favre and him playing for the packers arch rival..then they started superimposing other players in their rivals uniforms…..they had jeter in a red sox uniform. Wasn’t a pleasant sight. They also had MJ in a Knicks uniform….that would have been interesting.
Despite the love/hate for the Yankees, it draws fans in to either see them win or lose. The Rangers and Giants won’t generate that interest.
The Yankee franchise has a large national fanbase, The Phillies are more regional, even if they have a fan base that is similar to the RS, there mainly due to the recent success.
The first game Lee vs. Lincecum may draw in some fans of the game, but I think it will rate lower given the regional aspect of the two teams… both from the west divisions.
Does it matter?
By that I mean, I guess it doesn’t matter to me the fact that the Yankees loss drew so many people; that’s about the last thing I’m thinking of. Is the implication that more people watched to see the Yankees lose?
People had no way of knowing the yankees would lose.
That is the power of the yankees that texas will never have regardless of tv deals, etc…
Unless the rangers can increase payroll 200 % wich i doubt they will fade away like the rest.
Even the rs who are as close as you can get couldn’t hang with the yankees revenues.
Like francessa said, the yankees can bring the rest of baseball to their knees,he is right. They can take payroll to 300 million & still turn a profit.
large swathes of Americans get their Yankee-hating schadenfreude on.
good for them, I suppose. you have to throw them a bone every now and then.

Personally I think that is an obnoxious way to look at things. Yankees went 2001-2008 without winning championships, but outspending everyone by millions upon millions. The Yankees were out thought by a managerial stand point in that time range. The magic with baseball is money only takes you so far, and it should only take you so far.
The great Yankee teams have been more than just tons of dollars spent, and it is the that thinking that you propose that tarnishes some of the best of the Yankee legacies.
Meanwhile, I think it is also an obnoxious statement to suggest that a Giants vs Rangers game is bad for baseball because of the “regional” and “west coast” nature. Hello! Last year was East Coast, the year before that was East Coast, the year before that featured East Coast, and on and on. Get over it, it’s good for the game to expand to parts of this country outside of the East Coast. If more regions win from time to time, that means more regions of America may actually really follow their team during the season – because they have real chances to win a World Series.
I think it’s good for the game when different teams get in there.
Think about it; from 2000 on, the Yankees and Red Sox won two WS, and six different teams won one: White Sox, Cards, Diamondbacks, Halos, Marlins, Phillies.
And of course this year a franchise will win that has had a looong drought (Giants) or has never won anything ever (Rangers).
All I heard is how no One watches Baseball anymore and how it would be out of buisness in the next few years,
Also to all the Yankee/RedSox/Phillies haters out there enjoy years without these teams in there, But You want to continue to see Your teams to continue to be around you need the Yankees and Red Sox in the AL and you need the Phillies, Dodgers, and Yes even the Mets for the NL to be contenders

How are you tonight, going through withdraws, (I kept getting an error message when typing that, I kept adding an L and getting mad. Turns out the computer was right and my southern drawl was wrong
) I am beginning to. If it’s not to late, I’d like to have the Rangers in 6. Thanks
Imo it cost the yankees more for players than other teams because of their revenues & taxes, housing, etc….
Other teams can also trade a great player that cost less for a much greater haul than the yankees can trade a tex or a burnett who is making huge dollars.
David price can be traded for 4 or 5 prospects, what will cc get you?
Withdrawal
is how it is spelled.
Folks always talk about how much the Yankees spend, but seriously, everything in NY is more expensive. $400,000 gets you a decent house here, but a mansion in St. Louis or even Detroit. Who pays $2500/month for rent for a 1 bedroom in Kansas City? Ask anyone in NYC and they’ll tell you that’s a decent rent.
Anyway, I was a strong proponent of getting Crawford for LF, but the more I think about it, the more I don’t think it will or should happen. What’s the use of having a speedster like Crawford if you don’t use his speed? Granderson is a 30-30 guy, yet stole only about 12 bases this year. Girardi doesn’t belive in the speed game, which disappoints me, as I see a team capable of manufacturing runs, or disrupting pitchers with their potential to steal a bag. Jeter and A-Rod could easily have 25 steals each, Granderson could have 35, and Gardner could have at least 50. That’s almost half the lineup. And there’s no reason that Swisher and Cano can’t have 10 apiece. Pitchers and catchers would be nervous each time someone was on base, disrupting their rhythm. Am I the only one who thinks his way??
ron
Thanks, it did feel right with an L in it.
I thought they should have ran more also. But, they seemed to show some fear in making a mistake and taking the bat out of the hand of the person behind them.
Favre will fail again in the last sec
here it is, fail again.
OT INT in NFC final vs. Giants, good play!
I heard that a lot KPB, but it wouldn’t preclude the hitter not hitting well, but it could open some holes to hit through.
Granderson was hitting in the low 200′s and not walking.
Hard to steal bases when you’re not on base.
He also missed a month.
He could be a 30 30 guy next year.
DaSaint007
I hear what your saying. Sometimes I think they should have let that logic go. If they were worried about the batter not getting the “hit” because the runner was thrown out, they should have had comfort in knowing that the batter would have come up again the next inning with the slate clean. At worst the runner gets thrown out, at best the runner scores. As long as it’s not to late in the game, if it might score go for it.
ratings were high b/c it was a possible elimination game involving the Yankees and it wasn’t competing with Football. Games 1-5 and ALDS had bad ratings
I think this World Series will get decent ratings, they’ll get the California market with San Francisco and even LA Dodger fans rooting against them and Dallas a a big market and they’ll get a good share of their market especially with the Cowboys struggling. I’ll try to tune into most of the games, especially Wednesday night
KPB, I will do my very best to get my computer to input predictions for the Rangers. However I cannot promise the outcome!
Consider it done. I will post the prediction chart.
Posters have up until one hour before the first game of this Class B World Series to get their predictions in. Please put my name in the post so that I am sure to find it.

Cashman: Starting pitching will be a priority
By Mike Axisa
It’s no secret that the Yankees starting rotation was pretty dreadful beyond CC Sabathia in the second half, but that tends to happen when you have guys like Dustin Moseley, Javy Vazquez, Ivan Nova, and messed up A.J. Burnett going every fifth day. Unsurprisingly, Brian Cashman declared that starting pitching will be a priority this offseason following last night’s season-ending loss to the Rangers, and of course all eyes will soon be on Cliff Lee. I’m willing to bet it won’t end there though, I’m sure the Yankees will be in on all sorts of pitching this winter, and rightfully so.

Everyone loves to see David beat Goliath which is why both of these series got big numbers. Unfortunately the World Series will have poor viewership but the true baseball fans will enjoy it all the same

I agree. As much as it pains me that the Yanks aren’t in, I’ll still watch. Simply because I’d like to see one of the teams from my home state do well, after the Yankees are out.
Meanwhile, I think it is also an obnoxious statement to suggest that a Giants vs Rangers game is bad for baseball because of the “regional” and “west coast” nature. Hello! Obviously, there are a lot more people in the NY/Philly markets and more from those areas would be watching if their teams were actually in it but, as the chart below shows, it’s not like DFW or Northern Cal are slouches as media markets go…

I assume that most who post here will be watching the World Series, so it’s likely that there will be other die-hard baseball fans tuning in. Seems like there may be enough interesting story lines to draw in quite a few casual fans as well. ‘t will be interesting to see how the ratings shake out…
CompassRosy
Hello, nice to see you.
I’ll be watching the WS. It would be nice to see a Texas team win, since I’m from there and the Yankees are out.
Goodnight everybody.
•Joel Sherman looks at the delicate situation that is Derek Jeter’s free agency. Sherman concludes that Jeter is more valuable to the Yankees than to other teams, and that the 37-year-old will have to accept that it’s not a “divine right” that he hit at the top of the order and play 150 games per season if his production doesn’t improve. According to Sherman, Jeter’s numbers may only warrant a one-year, $7MM deal or so on the open market, but the Yankees will bid higher. He offers up a speculative three-year, $45MM deal.
Who gives a damn what Sherman thinks
good morning to any early birds out there
I wasn’t able to watch the whole game, but I was able to see the end, right up to the last out…and then I immediately turned it off! I have the post game recorded but haven’t had the heart to watch it yet.
I am of the opinion it was a team loss, I am not playing the blame game (that seems so red soxish). The Rangers just flat out played better. It helps take the sting out that the Phillies lost as well.
I agree w/ what others have said, it is good for baseball for other teams to play, at least that is what I keep telling myself
Good morning kate. It was a team loss no question. They didn’t pitch, they didn’t hit, and the rangers just flat outplayed them. Same thing happened with the Phillies…they didn’t hit and were outplayed by another team that got hotat the right time.
The ratings wil be down in the world series but I agree that its good in a way for baseball to get some exposure for some of these players (hamilton, posey, lincecum, lee).
Ill be watching and pulling for the giants just in case a world.series win would affect Cliffs decision
I’m not so sure the Yankees need more offense as much as they need a secondary approach to certain types of pitchers. The Yankees seem eminently “scoutable” – predictable – and if you get a pitcher who throws mostly “junk” and he’s able to execute most of his pitches, it seems you’ve got a good chance of stymying the Yankees. They didn’t lead the league in runs only because of the blowouts – they did score a good amount of runs in many, many games. But they could be shut down at times.
However, I don’t think you can totally discount the injuries that occurred during the season, combined with the down years of some of the regulars, for the inconsistency of the offense – which sometimes seemed feast or famine. There seemed a lot of games where the circularity of the lineup was lost because you had Nunez, Pena, Cervelli in some combination at the bottom of the lineup.
Can’t really do much about the bench at the start of the year – a good player worth his salt coming off a decent year is not going to want to sign on for very part-time work for reasons others have gone into before. You hope you stay healthy enough and productive enough at the beginning of the season so that the bench is not really relied upon in that time period. The Yankees ended up having to use players like Winn and Thames, not to mention minor leaguers like Curtis & Russo, regularly in the outfield when Granderson went down and then when Gardner went down, and Kearns when Swisher went down. It messes with the “clickability” of the offense when you keep putting in replacement parts on a regular basis, rather than for “scheduled” maintenance (i.e., the occasional resting of a regular.
Most years Cashman has done well at the trade deadline, a much better opportunity to get good bench players. Wood was a real find and Berkman, after coming back from an injury (those injuries again!) was okay. Kearns, after starting out at such a pace that many here were wishing Cashman could talk him into coming back next season, cooled off quite a bit (I think also due to injury).
Many of the injuries were caused by getting hit by pitches or fouling pitches off.
Anyway, I do think the issue is tweaking their approach rather than hauling off players and exchanging them for other players. Because, for one, I think the Yankees target patient hitters who will be taking the same approach anyway. I would like to see the Yankees be a little more aggressive on the basepaths – I know they were in years past. Damon and Jeter (and ARod) seemed to run a lot more. They’ve got some really good baserunners on this team, who could do a lot more hit-and-run type plays. Doesn’t always have to be an outright stolen base.
But the bottom line is when the pitching was clicking, the Yankees were winning. When the pitching wore down to Sabathia, kinda Hughes, and not much more, that’s when the Yankees faltered. And if Andy had not injured his groin, I believe they would have been okay, even without Javy and AJ (who hurt the team more than they helped).
So whether not they sign Cliff Lee, the Yankees will look to firm up the starting rotation. And then they’ll address the BUC situation. I don’t look for them to sign anyone that anyone here is going to approve of. Because it’s not that easy to get a really really good catcher to come in to be one of a trio.
I do think the Rangers have better players than the giants though and are probably more likely to be able to sustain their level of play through another series. Just as in the NLCS, the giants will have to pitch extrememly well.and get a lot of big hits to pull this thing off.
good morning upstate kate and blake -
I agree with both of you – team loss.
Anyway, I’ll watch the WS and root for the Giants. But in the long run, it won’t matter to me who wins or loses. It will be interesting to see what the ratings are, but they’ll be flawed with FOX out of commission for many folks in this area.
Good morning.
Kate,
I also haven’t watched the postgame show yet. Still hurts too much.
Blake,
I’m with you on hoping the Giants win the WS.
Doreen,
Good morning to you too.
Good morning, Fran.
Had the Phillies won, I would have rooted for TX, but now I will root for the Giants.
We still have FOX, and an increase in the Time Warner cable bill for no reason.
I am hoping Andy comes back for another season. He looked so dejected in the dugout, I am sure it is not the way he wanted to go out. Phil had a great season, and really should have been in the bullpen for the post season if all had gone according to plan.
upstate kate -
Oh, that’s so true. Hughes would have been in the bullpen if either AJ or Javy had come anywhere near doing what they were supposed to.
Doreen,
Agreed and that was probably the plan. Im sure they didn’t set out to have hughes starting the games he did in the postseason….he may benefit from it in the long run though.
Good morning everyone.
I went on a getaway weekend with my wife to NH so I didn’t get to enjoy all the doom and gloom of the game thread.
When the game was over I turned the TV off and enjoyed the weekend. Life goes on.
If you look at all the problems this team had all season from the injuries to the pitching woes to the down years for some, they did well to go as far as they did.
Time to retool and go again next year. Hoping for a better result of course.
blake -
I found it interesting that the Rangers also fared pretty well against David Price. Price is a Cy Young contender, and the Rangers weren’t fazed at all. The Rangers were at their absolute peak at the absolute right time.
As we head into the winter months, I give you autumn scenes.

upstate kate, Rob_NY, Erin, Joe from LI, Chuck58 and Yankee Trader……… I’m not able to get my final tribute through on the blog. If interested, have Chad send me your e-mail address and I will send it to you
Doreen,
Yea, they have played really well pretty much the entire postseason except those two games against the rays in texas. It was as much that as how the yankees played. The Angels team that the 2009 team faced played nowhere near that level. So many things have to go right to win 3 straight series over good teams.

great pix. Somewhere in the Adks? Some of the scenery looks familiar.
I have to laugh at your dog in the water. We have a cairn terrier who thinks she is a water dog. It is inevitable if she is in the canoe that she will hop in for a swim.
We were down your way this weekend visitng our son. We did a short hike around the lower falls of Letchworth. No pix- colors were past prime and it rained most of the time we were out.
I will email Chad
Yes Kate. My favorite hike. Bald Mtn, near Old Forge overlooking the chain of lakes.

Beautiful. I don’t think I could live anywhere that didn’t have a colorful autumn! (I liked the picture that reminded me of “The Birds!”)
JCPD,
Beautiful pictures. I sent Chad an email yesterday to give you my address. Looking forward to seeing the final tribute.
Blake, how is Phil going to benefit from getting slaughtered in the post-season? Not only did he finish the season on a terrible note, but now there are question marks about what kind of post-season pitcher he’ll be. He was awful last year and terrible in 2 starts this year.
JCPD-great pictures! Love the ones of your dog.
I will e-mail Chad, I’m anxious to see your tribute!
Maybe the Yankees’ scouting isn’t as good as it once was…………and maybe everyone in that lineup except for Cano needs a nice, long session with Long. This lineup is still susceptible to deep freezes at the wrong time – not last year, but before last year

Words can barely express how beautiful those pics were.
My personal favorite is one of the ones with Dakota chest deep in water.
Many of them are award quality.
Thank you so much for sharing your obvious love of nature and your talent.
I agree, who cares what Sherman thinks? I see the mediots are out in full force, taking their knocks against Jeter. They’re undoubtedly annoyed at him for being a “boring” interview, so now they are going to get their revenge by being obnoxious boobs
There is never a right time for a deep freeze.
Betsy,
Experience…its all experience. Maybe he learns from it.
Kate, Erin, Fran, SAS….. as soon as I hear from Chad, I will get it to you. Thanks for ll your compliments on my tributes. And I know I can speak for MTU also, he thanks you too. He must be off hiking some where. For me, work is getting in the way of my fun.

I agree with the sentiment, plus I think that the Daily news is junk anyways. I respect many more people’s opinions here than Sherman’s.
MTU, funny that should be one of your favorites. A friend of mine who is a vet with his own practice out in CA. saw that pic on my FB and asked me to send it to him so he could hang at work. He must have an incredible printer because in return, he printed and sent me a 13 X 19 copy of it. I just need to get it to the framers.
IMO, Phil wasn’t ready for the moment; he wasn’t equipped to do the job in the post-season. I sort of have those ? myself, but I also don’t think those starts will mean anything in a few years. If he’s improved as a pitcher, then he’ll be better able to deal with good teams in the playoffs. Right now, as you guys said, he wasn’t even supposed to be in the playoff rotation. Hopefully he learned what he has to improve on and will work diligently in the off-season.

A very good Color laser printer is what I would love to have.
That is probably what he was using.
Either that or a very, very high quality inkjet.

I do think Sherman is right about Joe, though
He wasn’t terrible in his start against the Twins.
The only “questions” about Hughes comes from the same quarters who excessively dissect every performance.
As Blake said, it’s all about experience.
Andy Pettitte has gotten slaughtered in post-season starts, some worse than Hughes, and rebounded nicely from them.
He threw more innings, and had more starts as a starter than at any other point in his career.
If you don’t think players learn and grow from those experiences, then you must believe players can never improve.
As far as Sherman or any other media member is concerned, the criticism fans on here level on players and the team is much worse, and personal, than anything the media dishes out.
Which is why I don’t understand why people have a problem with it. Many who do have said much worse when describing this team.
MTU, I am running out of wall space. The bedroom alone has 65 various pictures of NYC scenes.

Time for a studio and a sponsor.
in defense of Girardi…and I certainly agree he has made some questionable moves at times…
he gets accused of overly relying on his binder, but Maddon and Bochey are 2 managers noted for playing the match up game as well, both of them had a variety of line ups during the post season, while Girardi stuck w/ his A line up
he gets accused of not being forthcoming w/ the press, but I see it as not throwing his players under the bus. Not one word has come out about AJ’s troubles, especially that black eye. Very little has been said about various players injuries. Fans might not like it, media might not like it, but I bet the team appreciates it. And would you as a fan really want the opposition to know Mo is hurting, Tex is hurting etc.
