The Joe Girardi and Brian Cashman press conferences are about to begin here in the Bronx. Meanwhile, in the Yankee Stadium the outfield, the pieces of turf are literally being removed one by one.

Does anyone think the pitching starved Dodgers would be interested in a reclamation project like Joba?

Do you think they’d take Swisher + Joba for Ethier.

Swisher actually had a better year than Ethier and they’re about the same age.

Ethier is a better contact hitter for his career at .292.

He plays better defense in RF.

He has some clutch hits in the post season.

It would save the Yankees from having to pay Swisher 9 million but Ethier makes 6 million and his nearing free agency.

Having Joba would save the Dodgers from having to overspend for a free agent starting pitcher.

    Fair deal or wishful thinking?

in cervelli’s defense, a lot of his issues came with Burnett pitching. The issues from that could have carried over into his other starts, as he became all out of whack. not far-fetched!

    Chad -

Do they always do that, or were there problems with the turf this season? Or are they preparing for off-season activities at the stadium?

Erin, SAS and Kate – Got all of your predictions. Will update the chart.

    To Everybody Else,
I will extend your condolences to Trisha and her family.

Ethier is will make 9.25 million in 2011.

    Bret-

Probably wishful thinking, but throw in lefty Hong-Chih Kuo and you have my blessings!!

    Do not want Ethier.

    That’s certainly possible. :? :)

  11. Cashmoney October 25th, 2010 at 12:06 pm

Swisher will be making 9 mil next year? He won’t be an attractive trading piece at all at that price tag.

  12. NYY fan in NH October 25th, 2010 at 12:07 pm

Swisher’s been great during the regular season, but his postseason numbers are troubling the last 2 years.

  13. Chip October 25th, 2010 at 12:07 pm

    Bret –

No way they do that deal. Eithier was their best offensive player.

Maybe they would consider Joba and Gardner for Matt Kemp, but that’s only because they’re pretty down on Kemp right now. It would be a case of two guys in need of the proverbial change of scenary.

Frankly if I could get that deal, I would take it in a nanosecond if I was Cashman, but I seriously doubt it would happen.

  14. Erin October 25th, 2010 at 12:08 pm

In Swisher’s defense, he’s been playing with only one good leg for over a month. A healthy Swish might have had a much better postseason this year.

  15. ac1 October 25th, 2010 at 12:09 pm

the dodgers aren’t giving up matt kemp. that idea has been discussed to death.

  17. Chip October 25th, 2010 at 12:09 pm

In general I think that the only way the Yankees consider moving Swisher is in a package for a starting pitcher.

  18. GreenBeret7 October 25th, 2010 at 12:10 pm

Doreen, I think that they usually remove the well worn spots after the season and replace them with new sod.

  19. Chip October 25th, 2010 at 12:10 pm

    ac1 –

You’re probably right. My point was just that there’s a better chance of them dealing Kemp (who they are down on) than Eithier, who was their only good offensive player most of the year.

  20. Bret The Hitman October 25th, 2010 at 12:11 pm

Swish will be making 9 million.

Ethier will be making 9.25 million.

Joba could get a raise in arbitration to about 3 million.

Swish will turn 30 in November.

Ethier will turn 29 in April.

Swish had the better season but Ethier has the better career numbers.

Ethier is a free agent after 2011 and probably a type – A.

BloggingBombers Pettitte had back problems during the end of his ALDS Game 2 start. That played into the decision to flip-flop him with Hughes in the ALCS.

BloggingBombers Girardi: “We didn?t accomplish our goal, first and foremost. My job was to lead us to the 28th championship and it wasn?t done.”

  22. GreenBeret7 October 25th, 2010 at 12:13 pm

Good afternoon, BerTin. Hope all is well and you’re going to crack the whip here to keep everyone in line. especially Ernica.

  23. Chip October 25th, 2010 at 12:14 pm

    GB7 –

I get your point about why Rene Rivera was stashed at AA, but my question is; if Rivera was good enough to be a back-up catcher for a major league team, then wouldn’t some team have grabbed him up for that role rather than let him get to the point where he was available to be a tutor in AA?

I was disappointed in Cervelli’s defense too – especially since that’s what his calling card was when he came up, but for the few games he’s going to be called on to play if the Yankees indeed go with Posada and Montero also on the roster, I don’t see the Yankees looking too much into replacing him.

  24. Chip October 25th, 2010 at 12:15 pm

I do think that we’ve seen the last of Ramiro Pena though. Barring a trade is there any doubt that his role on the bench will be filled by Eduardo Nunez?

  25. Erin October 25th, 2010 at 12:17 pm

Ledger_Yankees Girardi says his contract discussions will take place “fairly quickly.”

BloggingBombers Girardi said that, had Pettitte been healthy, they may have kept him lined up for Game 2 against Texas.

Ledger_Yankees Pettitte’s back was locked up, hamstrings tight, leg grabbed in G2 of ALDS. Pitched G3 in ALCS to give him extra time to recover.

  26. West Coast Yankee Fan October 25th, 2010 at 12:18 pm

Typical Girardi – no answers at all.

Hey, I’m a big fan of Cervelli and his enthusiasm, which is contagious to watch, and clearly so for his teammates as well. However, he didn’t have a very good season this year defensively or with the bat. He’s a good backup, but probably not the guy who should be counted on to do more and more as Posada plays less and less. I say give Montero his shot.

I agree with Chip that Nunez will be the pick over Pena. Throwing my two cents in, I think we keep Swisher, Granderson and Gardner, and put Gardner in the leadoff spot. We simply didn’t hit in the ALCS, but I’m not sure that means dismantling the team, even if it is aging. My bigger concern is the pitching. We need Lee and we need another pitcher or two beyond him, especially if Pettitte doesn’t come back. And we need to pray that Mo and Robertson and Joba, if the latter two are still with the team come April, find their groove again.

So far as removing that sod, chances are it’s so MLB or Steiner can sell it. Buy your game-used Yankee Stadium grass!
