KenDavidoff Come, on people! Mrs Lee: “I was highly offended.” #Yankees: “Here’s $150 million.” Mrs. Lee: “I forgive you.” #Rangers
    __

    awesome. idiot fans.

  2. Jerkface October 26th, 2010 at 12:08 pm

Players have to pay tax to each state they play in. The lack of state income tax is certainly appealing for the 81 home games Lee has, but most players have residency claims in a state with low or no income tax anyways.

Lee cannot take less money to play for Texas because the taxes from all the other states he will play in will hurt his overall bottom line.

Texas has to pay him more than the Yankees to keep him, bottom line.

  3. blake October 26th, 2010 at 12:16 pm

If cliff wants to make the most money and play on the biggest stage then he will be a yankee next year. Looking at the big picture he knows the yanks are committed to winning every year. The rangers are having a great season but evenif they win the WS this year there will still be people in that city that would probably trade that world series for a Cowboys regular season victory.

  4. upstate kate October 26th, 2010 at 12:19 pm

and thank you NY Giants for not letting that happen last night :)

  5. Wave Your Hat October 26th, 2010 at 12:26 pm

Montero has to play in the majors next year, at catcher hopefully but if he can’t catch at DH. So the Yanks can’t go out and sign Giambi or Damon or someone to DH, they need to leave the escape hatch open for Montero.

It’s a problem, but an unavoidable one I think.

  6. blake October 26th, 2010 at 12:30 pm

Wave, I agree regarding Montero. I hope they let him show what he’s got and stick.with him through any early season struggles. Allowing him to work through it could pay off in the 2nd half and postseason.

  7. MTU October 26th, 2010 at 12:31 pm

    WYH-

He who destroys light towers will be given a chance to win a starting job in ST next season.

  8. Wave Your Hat October 26th, 2010 at 12:34 pm

    MTU-

Like the fifth starter “competition” last year?

  9. MTU October 26th, 2010 at 12:35 pm

    WYH-

Yes. Only he won’t be pitching. At least, not in the traditional sense. ;)

  10. Tom in N.J. October 26th, 2010 at 12:36 pm

“Allowing him to work through it could pay off in the 2nd half and postseason.”

Blake, That’s a very good point. When Jeter first came up somebody, Stick Michael, I think, told the Boss not to look at Jeter’s early box scores or make any rash judgements based upon his early season play. Jeter, would ‘get it’.

  11. MTU October 26th, 2010 at 12:38 pm

    Blake-

Good thing they took out the “extra insurance” for Montero they’re gonna need it. :)

  12. blake October 26th, 2010 at 12:39 pm

Tom, there is an adjustment period to the big leagues. Some guys take longer than others to adjust but the fact is that the quicker they give him the opportunity to get up to speed….the quicker he will.

  13. blake October 26th, 2010 at 12:41 pm

    MTU,

Opposing teams have already been told to not park their buses near Steinbrenner field to avoid risk of window fracture. ;)

  14. Bronx Jeers October 26th, 2010 at 12:42 pm

You know there’s nothing out here but desert, polygamists, and rattlesnakes.

    ————————————————————————————————————-

In AZ the rattlesnakes wear suits and cowboy boots.

No polygamists but their are plenty of other types of “…ists”

  15. MTU October 26th, 2010 at 12:44 pm

    Blake-

Does a Mercedes require adjustment to the track.

Does a Grizzly need to fear.

Does Sasquatch need to be shown the Forest.

    So it is with Jesus.

The only ones who will need to adjust will be the Pitchers, and that will be their “pucker” factors when they face him. ;)

  16. blake October 26th, 2010 at 12:46 pm

    MTU,

Let’s hope. Lot to look forward to next season.

  17. Joe from Long Island October 26th, 2010 at 12:47 pm

His wife was very complimentary of Dallas, and was not impressed with the Yankee fans sitting around her in YS.

Mrs. Lee likely will never see those fans again.

  18. MTU October 26th, 2010 at 12:48 pm

    Blake-

That is covered under the “special” insurance.

Light Towers and other free standing objects.

Vehicles parked within a 100 mile radius of the Stadium.

And injuries sustained by innocents bystanders or fans struck by balls of his bat.

The yankees are no dummies. :)

    Jeers-

The same problem occurs with Sharks and their many varieties. ;)

  19. MTU October 26th, 2010 at 12:49 pm

    “off” . sorry. typo.

  20. MTU October 26th, 2010 at 12:51 pm

    Joe-

No offense to Cliff but if his wife forces him to take 10-20 million less in salary because she doesn’t like the fans then I guess they deserve what they get. ;)

    JMHO.

  21. MTU October 26th, 2010 at 12:53 pm

“Yankees unlikely to pick up any player options”

So please don’t tell me Yankees don’t care about money. This is just not true.
    It’s all about money.

  25. BIG AL October 26th, 2010 at 1:02 pm

Every niche in an ecosystem must be filled. That’s just a law of Nature.

I sure wouldn’t mind having one of ‘em helping me to secure my future. Could you imagine facing some of these GM’s naked ?

Many of them aren’t exactly Snow White either. ;)

How about Boston’s Lucchino as an example fine figure of Humanity that he is.

I think any pro athlete that does hire the best agent available is crazy.

If I were a Lee type player, I’d have Boras as my agent. Then you just sit back and let him do all the arm twisting, while your spare time is spent counting your money, and planning for the good life.

  28. Dylan October 26th, 2010 at 1:15 pm

I really like the Giambi idea. People that don’t want him because he would take time away from Montero, don’t realize that Giambi is nothing more than a bench player at this stage in his career. He would backup Tex, pinch hit, and would only occasionally get the start at DH, if Montero makes the team.

I think our opening day lineup should go something like this.

    Gardner- LF
    Jeter- SS
    Cano- 2B
    A-Rod- 3B
    Tex- 1B
    Montero- DH
    Posada- C
    Grandy- CF
    Swisher- RF

I like Gardner leading off, because he steals bases and draws walks. I think Jeter will bounce back and bat .300, so I think he should stay at the top of the lineup. Cano is our best hitter BY FAR, so he needs to bat 3rd. He will also have an even higher batting average with A-Rod protecting him. Tex isn’t going to drop too far in the lineup, so 5th works for him. If Montero is as good as people seem to think he is, he should bat in the middle of our lineup. Posada, Grandy, and Swisher could bat in any order. I like this lineup, because we are able to break up all the lefties. A lot of people want Gardy and Grandy at the top of the lineup, but I don’t like that at all against tough lefties. Gardner makes MUCH more sense then Jeter in the leadoff spot though. Gardner has a higher OBP, is much faster, and Jeter is a better bunter.

If I were the Yankees I’d drive Lee’s market down and say “We’re very sorry Mrs. Lee was offended in her heart by our fans. Out of respect to her we do not intend to further insult her family and negotiate with Mr. Lee and wish them luck in their future endeavors”.

I think Cliff Lee would probably lock his wife in the basement after his agent pleaded with Cash and Hal that she was misquoted.

You take the Yankees out of the equation and he’ll be lucky to get 5 years 100 million from anyone.

Seriously. This whole “in my heart” stuff is ridiculous. I’m fairly certain her husband is not thrilled with her being quoted like that in the article.

  30. BIG AL October 26th, 2010 at 1:19 pm

Giambi can’t hit anymore, why would you even waste your time talking about him.

Please, no more washed-up old players taking money, and giving nothing in return.

  31. yankeefeminista October 26th, 2010 at 1:20 pm

Well, the crowd was pretty ugly at the end of Game One. I know b/c I was unfortunately sitting in the Texas family section. The chants were basically worthy of porn and someone did throw a beer and then run off. Security was slow to react.

However, it was about three fans out of hundreds who were well behaved, and even attempted to locate those who threw the beer. Similar things happen at every ballpark. Not rationalizing it, but there is always a minority element that behaves that way, and frankly I have been assaulted, mooned, and otherwise berated in Philly countless times at football, hockey and baseball games. Cliff Lee’s wife is lucky her husband played for Philly and not against. Just my two cents worth.

Yup. That’s what the pros are for. No doubt about that. I don’t have to like/dislike Boras to respect what he accomplishes for his clients.

The fact is that he is excellent at his job.

People talk about money Al but you and I both know that an extra 10-20 mil buys a lot of fishing holes in a lot of States. That’s for sure.

    Where was the family section?

I have seats on the field level on the 1st base line and I didn’t see anything like that going on. Are those in the 200′s or higher?

If that’s the case, whoever those idiots are may have cost the Yankees a pitcher.

I did notice a lot of overpumped beer muscle mooks in the stadium for the playoffs, but for the most part they were well behaved. Although one tried to move up into the good seats where I was without a ticket and got his rear end handed to him by security when he called them a vulgar name.

During the AL Championship Series games in New York between the Yankees and Rangers, fans were extremely rude to Kristen Lee, spitting and throwing beer in her direction and shouting obscenities, according to USA Today.

“The fans did not do good things in my heart,” Kristen Lee said, according to the newspaper. “When people are staring at you, and saying horrible things, it’s hard not to take it personal.”

lol. Nothing $150 million can’t fix.

  44. BIG AL October 26th, 2010 at 1:32 pm

I think there’s a good chance Wood signs with Tampa, if they lose Soriano. It would have to be far below what his current option is with the Yankees, maybe $6-7 mil. The Yankees don’t want to spend even that much for an EIG.

The USA Today article was a nice discussion piece on a slow news day. However, I personally can’t believe that the drunken behavior of a few fans would play any meaningful role in Lee’s eventual destination. Given Lee’s history and age, you have to think the contract will be his #1 priority. After that, the organization, opportunity to win, lifestyle, chemistry, etc. will be considered to varying degrees. If the public perception regarding the Yankees desire to obtain Cliff Lee is correct, the Rangers will need to be willing to at least approach Sabathia’s contract or else hope that Cashman gets drunk and does his best impersonation of those drunken Yankee fans.

You can’t play hardball or play games with the guy everyone knows the Yanks want very badly. Too big of a gamble and it would show a lack of respect for the Lee family.

I can guarantee the negotiations will turn out nothing like that at all.

Lee’s wife can satisfy all her shopping needs in Westchester.

Further that Texas rooting section was pretty intentionally obnoxious. They were ostentatious as hell, although I don’t condone the porn chant and the beer throwing. Further, the woman is naive if she doesn’t realize that there is a “certain element” that behaves that way at many ballparks…

  57. upstate kate October 26th, 2010 at 1:43 pm

Yankee fans sure have been taking a beating lately…they are spoiled and expect to win the WS every year…they talk on their cell phones and leave the game too early…they are mean to Mrs. Lee..what is next?

  58. Betsy October 26th, 2010 at 1:43 pm

I’m not saying Joba wasn’t frustrating, but what makes him different than any young pitcher?

Blake, I would not do that. I don’t want Joba or anyone going into ST under the assumption they really have a shot to win the #5 spot when they don’t. If we get Lee and Andy retires, IMO we need a solid veteran in the #4 spot – not some green rookie.

  62. Betsy October 26th, 2010 at 1:48 pm

Shoot, that USA today article is very discouraging. I hope Lee’s wife understands that those Yankee fans don’t represent the city (she reminds me of Debbie Clemens, who understandably had issues with NY before Roger signed with Toronto due to fan behavior)……..that said, if Lee gets $$$ from the Rangers, I think he’s staying. How can he walk away? He said it himself…….he didn’t have to say that; he could have put out some blah comment that could be interpreted however one wishes. I’m assuming Lee is staying in TX – I refuse to get my hopes up.

  63. Yank1 October 26th, 2010 at 1:48 pm

“Yankee fans sure have been taking a beating lately…they are spoiled and expect to win the WS every year…they talk on their cell phones and leave the game too early…they are mean to Mrs. Lee..what is next?”

Don’t forget the biggest complaint – there are too many rich people and they don’t make any noise and NYS is not a homefield advantage.

  64. LGY October 26th, 2010 at 1:51 pm

    This is the gameplan LoHud.

Send WCYF to where the Lees are staying in Texas posing as a a Rangers fan.

Want to meet the friendliest people in the world?

Walk into Saks 5th Avenue after your husband just signed a $100+ million contract with the Yankees.

  66. SJ44 October 26th, 2010 at 1:54 pm

I remember the stories about Amber Sabathia wanting no part of NY.

Or, Johnny Damon saying how much he loves Boston and could “never sign with the Yankees”.

That USA Today story will have zero bearing on Cliff Lee’s future plans.

  67. CompassRosy October 26th, 2010 at 1:55 pm

Further, the woman is naive if she doesn?t realize that there is a ?certain element? that behaves that way at many ballparks?
    ____

Her husband has been a major league pitcher for several years, no doubt she’s been to many games in many different ballparks, so I doubt she’s naive regarding fan behavior. It is, however, rather curious that she singles out her experience at YS unless it either was over the top from what she’s experienced so far or she has ulterior motives…
I suppose neither scenario can be ruled out.

IMO, a very large portion of fans have earned the bad rap.

I don’t live anywhere near NY (in NW Indiana) and the few Yankee fans I know around here are idiots, too.

One was cursing about Girardi yesterday and demanded he needs to be fired for the way he handled the ALCS.

I had to tell him that it’s impossible to win the WS every year but he wasn’t having any of it. I guess last season accounted for nothing in his eyes. He didn’t like that I told him that Girardi was coming back.

I guess he must have loved the 1980s where The Boss fired his managers on a yearly basis.

You can’t win with that kind of instability.

  69. Betsy October 26th, 2010 at 1:57 pm

GLove, read Lee’s comments – they sound genuine and from the heart. Why did he say ” it would be hard to walk away”? He didn’t have to say that……..

If Mrs. Lee and Cliff are judging NYers and Yankee fans based on a few fans, then let them stay in Texas. I’m tired of hearing about how awful NYers are – no, we’re not. We’re no different than anyone else.

As to Jeter, he’s not done – not even close. He will work as hard as he always does and will bounce back in 2011.

I don’t know what it is but fans from NY, Philly and Boston tend to be bigger a-holes. I think it’s mainly because those are 3 of the biggest sports towns in the country and with more fans you’ll have more jerks. But I’m not sure… there’s a certain “attitude” in the northeast

  75. LGY October 26th, 2010 at 2:03 pm

    Come on guys.

No one can really believe some drunken idiots in the stands are going to have any impact on Lee’s decision or how “friendly” the people in Texas are.

I’m pretty sure the Lees are not going to be socializing with loudmouth Joey Meatballs and they are not going to have any problem finding people to be “friendly” with them.

  76. SJ44 October 26th, 2010 at 2:03 pm

    Betsy,

Tell me a guy who would say anything otherwise under the circumstances.

What do you expect him to say on the eve of the World Series.

I know you will believe what you want to believe.

Cliff Lee is filing for free agency regardless of the result of the WS.

When he does, the recruitment will begin and business thoughts take over.

  77. Chambliss October 26th, 2010 at 2:04 pm

I can think of 150 million reasons why Lee will not be concerned about his wife when he signs with the Yankees.

  78. GreenBeret7 October 26th, 2010 at 2:05 pm

They didn’t compare Laird to Hinske. All they said was that if he makes the team in 2011, Laird would perform the same role as Hinske. Not the same thing….not the least of which, Laird is a better defesive ball player on the corners and he’s a right handed hitter. Laird is now learning to play the corner outfields. He’s doing just fine as far as I can tell. For one thing, Laird can actually throw.

If Mrs. Lee really was appalled at the behavior of a handful of Yankee fans I have a perfect solution for her.

Let Cliff purchase a skybox big enough for her and all of her best buds. Have it stocked with caviar and the finer things of life and their should be no more issues with the fans.

An extra 10-20 mill can do that. ;)

“It is, however, rather curious that she singles out her experience at YS unless it either was over the top from what she’s experienced so far or she has ulterior motives…”

It is very odd. Either she was genuinely upset and wanted to let people know about the ‘horrible’ visiting atmosphere at NYS, or she was instructed to use as a negotiation tactic – which is kind of odd considering it is one day before her husband pitches in the World Series.

They already know Cash will go to no bounds to get Lee – what is the purpose of making this comment? To milk $20 million more from us?

So is every FA going to start doing this and saying negative things about NY or express disinterest in coming here, so we add more $$?

That being said, he is getting a blank check from us anyway, so I guess it is smart tactic on their part.

    SJ:

“That’s the greatest thing, being so close to home,” she said. “Cliff can fit in anywhere, but it makes my life a lot easier. We’ve never had a short commute before. Having a direct flight from Little Rock is great.”

Lee threw eight shutout innings, striking out 13 Yankees, in the Rangers? Game 3 win of the ALCS in The Bronx on the way to the World Series. Lee will start Game 1 of the Fall Classic on Wednesday against the Giants.

“I love this city,” Cliff said of the Dallas area. “I love my teammates. It’s going to be a good team for years to come. For my family, this couldn’t be a better situation.

“Free agency is when a player finally gets a choice, and I’m looking forward to that. There are so many things that can happen. I’m just more focused on helping this team win a World Series.”

While the Yankees focus on prying him away from Texas.

    ********

He’s obviously going free agent, but his family is well-settled and happy in TX. He also thinks TX is going to be good for years to come, so it’s hardly a matter of the Yankees being his only option if he wants to compete for a title most years. I happen to agree – and I don’t think the Yankees are a sure thing, not in their division and not with the age and ? they have on their team. Sure they’ll be contenders, but they are going to fight it out with every team in their division – some of whom have fantastic young talent.

You can talk all you want about how sure you are Lee will come here, but you don’t know any more than we do……and we know nothing (only Lee and his family do).

“GLove, read Lee?s comments ? they sound genuine and from the heart. Why did he say ? it would be hard to walk away?? He didn?t have to say that??..”

Betsy, do you know where to find the full text of that interview? I ask because I’m pretty sure that wasn’t his full answer that he hedged more than that clip would lead you to believe, but I can’t find an article right now that doesn’t cut off his response. I don’t place much stock any these quotes from Cliff or his wife…it would be difficult for him to not speak highly of the Rangers at this point and their quotes are going to be reduced to the most appealing sound bite.

Yeah, Doreen. The original is much better than the remake. After “Fear strikes Out”, two of the worst baseball bios ever made are coming up. “The Winning Team” with Ronald Reagan and Doris Day, about Grover Cleveland Alexander. The next one is “The Babe Ruth Story” with William Bendix. Brutal. They have a 45 year old Bendix playing a 17 year old Babe Ruth, and on through his death.

I just want to add one thing about Joba. I stand by my statement that I am not as enamored of Joba as a starter as I once was. And I stand by my statement that I would no longer be upset if he was traded.

However, nothing would thrill me more than if this young man could turn things around for himself, whether that’s in the bullpen or starting. It is up to him at this point, I believe. The trajectory of his brief career saddens me at times. Still, he is a major league ballplayer, and he is young, so there is time and opportunity ahead for him.

    ==========================================

Doreen, I wouldn’t be upset if Joba was traded either. I just don’t think it’ll happen at this point , when his market value is down.

It just amazes me when I think about this, the expectations created from a MERE 24 IP by Joba in 2007. That’s it, just 24 innings!!! It serves as a testimony to the level of response the mediots can create with many of us fans.

It reminds me of a story I used to hear about the Hall of Fame outfielder, Al Kaline. In his rookie year, at the tender age of 20, he won a batting title by hitting .340 and had what amounted to a career year for him. Although he eventually put together a HOF-worthy career with 3007 hits, a .297 lifetime BA and 399 HRs, for the first 7-8 seasons after his only batting title, people just assumed that he was underachieving, simply because of all the expectations created from his rookie year. It took years for him to overcome those expectations and he became a very respected, even beloved player with the hometown fans.

Kudos to Chad and Jeff for being on point and getting rid of this guy!

Back to the discussion at hand…

I would be absolutely floored if Lee doesn’t sign with the Yankees. Read his comments when he got traded to the Rangers, he sounded genuinely interested in being a Yankee. I think it was SJ44 that said Lee had dinner with Sabathia a night before being traded. They are tight. And finally, Lee is an old free agent and this is likely his only shot at making bank. He’s going to go for the most money he can and regardless of Texas’ TV deal, that will be with the Yankees.

  103. SJ44 October 26th, 2010 at 2:26 pm

Patrick, you don’t think things have changed since then?

  106. CompassRosy October 26th, 2010 at 2:29 pm

The story sounds a bit exaggerated.
    ____

Sorry, I’m not sure of the context here but, if this is referring to the “story” of Kristen Lee’s comments, what I find rather funny is that they were just that, some comments thrown in at the end of a story about how Lee got where he is. Frankly, I found the following a bit more compelling…

When he sat in the clubhouse before Game 5 of the AL Division Series against Tampa Bay ? then the biggest game in Rangers history ? Daniels remembers Lee acting as nonchalant as if it were a spring training contest. He calmly pitched a six-hit, complete game, and Texas won its first postseason series in 50 years.

Lee’s eerie calm, which leads to his confidence, may come from his 9-year-old son, Jaxon. Lee carried him in his arms, clutching him tightly, during the celebration on the field after the Rangers won the pennant.

Jaxon was just four months old when he was diagnosed with acute myelogen leukemia. He was given a 30% chance to live, Kristen says. He went through chemotherapy, and later radiation treatment and a stem cell transplant. Today, he is in remission, and a vibrant, healthy boy.

“After we went through that,” Kristen says, “Cliff knows that baseball isn’t life or death.”

The experience, Lee says, has taught him to live in the moment.

  107. SJ44 October 26th, 2010 at 2:31 pm

    Betsy,

    No, the story hasn’t changed.

Only thing that has changed is, the price for his services have gone up.

In that regard, it still makes the Yankees the favorites to sign him.

  108. Patrick October 26th, 2010 at 2:31 pm

Patrick, you don’t think things have changed since then?

Sure, things change all the time. He probably had no idea what Texas would be like but obviously he’s had a ton of success there and his team has won a lot. Winning = happiness so I wouldn’t read into what he’s saying right now in the media. Once he gets down to free agency those feelings will be over and it’ll be all about the money, in my opinion. He knows from CC that NY is a great team to play for, the area is a great area to live in, etc. And we all know the Yankees will make the highest offer. It will come down to money, like it usually does, and Lee will sign with the Yankees.

  109. Betsy October 26th, 2010 at 2:33 pm

Ok, well I’m going to do my best to forget what Mrs. Lee said (again, it reminds me of what Debbie Clemens said before Rog signed with the Jays) …………Lee is absolutely going FA, so the minute the clock strikes, I hope AJ and CC are on that phone, trying to convince her that NY is not some evil place.

  110. Betsy October 26th, 2010 at 2:34 pm

Patrick, ok – well as I said, there’s no point in me worrying about this now…….We don’t have much longer to wait (hope it’s a quick WS, lol).

  112. yankeefeminista October 26th, 2010 at 2:34 pm

Who’s Wilmer Romero, you ask (as did I)? Per Keith Law:

Romero is a potential five-tool center/right fielder who takes a huge BP and has above-average speed and arm tools. But he is still extremely raw and has to go through MLB’s age verification process. As a result, he won’t sign as early as most of these other players.

    Per MLBTR:

Wilmer Romero, an outfielder from Santo Domingo, has the toolset to demand seven figures, writes Bentley. The previous unknown stands 6’2”, has good speed, a strong arm and plus power.

Romero was also ranked the #5 prospect coming out of the DR, by MLBTR.

  113. Betsy October 26th, 2010 at 2:35 pm

I guess the Yankees will have no limit when it comes to signing this guy; they need him. An added bonus will be that the young pitchers could learn from Lee, like Hamels did from Halladay.

  121. Cashmoney October 26th, 2010 at 2:54 pm

It looks like the Yanks are piling up middle of field positional talents this year. Good stuff about Wilmer Romero in the above analysis. I hope Cash continue to pursuit premium talents and high risk/reward guys via amateur and IFA at all costs.

Day 3 of baseball withdraw and I am already Leed out. I hope he signs with us.

Reading Cashman’s comment about the bench it looks like he will go with looking for scrap pieces again. I like the idea of Laird playing OF, if he turns out to be the RH Hinske. He would have replaced Kearns and thames with ease. Along those line, Why not having Nunez do the same.

I think bench versatility and depth is rather an important issue when you carry 12 pitchers on a staff and have an aging left side of infield to boot. I hope Cash would at least secure one reliable veteran pieces to that mix in the veins of a Bill Hall or F. Lopez.

  122. West Coast Yankee Fan October 26th, 2010 at 2:56 pm
