The day that’s tough to swallow

Yankees Baseball

The World Series begins tonight, and the Yankees aren’t in it.

“We didn’t accomplish our goal, first and foremost,” Joe Girardi said on Monday. “My job is to lead us to that goal, a 28th championship, and it wasn’t done. However you want to describe it, we didn’t accomplish what we set out to do. And that’s hard. It’s still disappointing as I sit here today. You think about how hard it is to get to the playoffs and all the work you put in, and the feeling you have from one year to the next. One is extreme joy, and one is tough to swallow.”

I’ve been working on some end-of-the-season stuff, and it occurs to me that I forgot to post the full audio of Girardi’s year-in-review press conference, so here it is. It’s as good a way as any to start this day on the blog.

    RE-POST FROM LAST THREAD:

Yanks have won the world series w/o Cliff Lee on the team in the past.
Yanks even won the world series against Cliff Lee’s team last year.
They will probably win more world series after Cliff Lee retires.
In the meantime it will be more favorable if Cliff Lee is on the Yanks,
but they’ll still be able to win if he does play elsewhere.
Cliff Lee’s team doesn’t win the world series every year.
If they do win this year, wouldn’t it be the first time for him to be on a world series winner?
Cleveland didn’t win it all with Sabathia and Lee on the same team.
Does that mean NY also would not if he were to play here?
    I think not.
Think not in such pessimistic absolutes, or in black & white terms.

Betsy, I understand. No two situations or people are the same. However, in situations such as this, the script always seems to play out pretty similarly. Its a lot of talk back and forth about how guys (usually) don’t want to come to NY. Too much pressure. Too far from the family. Too much media attention/obligation. Too much traffic. Etc.

Personally, never in a million years did I see us signing Mike Mussina. Seemed like the definition of an ‘anti-New York’ guy. I think people just get too caught up in what people say to the press when these negotiations are going on (even though in this case they havent even begun). I think at the end of the day the Yanks will sign him. If not, I don’t worry about the moves Cash will make. Yes, it wouldnt put him in the best position but he can basically trade our entire outfield if he wanted to, so there are still options even if we don’t all like them very much.

  4. Shame Spencer October 27th, 2010 at 10:40 am

Also Fran, I had assumed I would just send it your way and have you forward it.. but then I couldn’t figure out how to email you lol. I’ll send something soon. Thanks again.

I’m not upset at all – I got over it the minute the Yankees lost game 6.

  6. Betsy October 27th, 2010 at 10:42 am

Shame, good points to be sure. Moose, when he used to come to NY with the O’s, would stay in his hotel basically…………He was convinced by Torre and Jeter that he didn’t have to live in the city – amongst other things.

  7. Shame Spencer October 27th, 2010 at 10:42 am

Doreen – THIS!! “I think this is a slap in the face to organizations who have done a better job financially. To me, there is no way that a team without the resources to pay someone should be allowed to take on the salary.”

Spot on girlfriend. People b*tch and moan about how much the Yankees spend and how they are so bad for baseball.. where has the media or any other news/sports/opinion outlet been on this issue with the Rangers?

  8. tk October 27th, 2010 at 10:43 am

    Shame,

Something else to keep in mind—geography should be less of an impediment for an elite MLB free agent than virtually anyone else. These guys have relatively short careers, they don’t work year-round, they are on the road half the time when they are working, they can afford to maintain two homes, and traveling home is easier for them (quick, private flight). In short, I agree. With the stakes being this high and the geographic barriers that low, I don’t think location will be the deciding factor in this circumstance.

    RE-POST

Cliff Lee and Burnett have the same agent (Darek Braunecker)
If Chuck Greenberg and Nolan Ryan think they’ll continue to be a force in the AL West with the nearly $65M payroll of 2010 then they need to guess again. It will take in the vicinity of $100M and the TV deal is supposed to be used for debt paydown on the purchase of the team last summer.
They had better ride this wave and enjoy it because dynasty doesn’t fit their business model.

  10. LGY October 27th, 2010 at 10:44 am

Man, I can only imagine what other boards are like during the Hot Stove season.

A team with something like a 99% sucess rate for players they really want in FA and is going to be a WS competitor regardless of what happens with Lee.

    Woosa lohud.

  11. blake October 27th, 2010 at 10:45 am

    Betsy,

There are things they can do to improve the team if Lee stays in Texas. They could sign Carl Crawford….they could improve the bullpen etc….and we really don’t know yet what potential deals may be out there. The goal will be Lee but there will be other ways to improve if that falls through.

  12. Doreen October 27th, 2010 at 10:46 am

I would just like to have Selig answer that question, but it does have to b asked first. :?

    ***

That picture is “auld lang syne”-ish, isn’t it????

I suppose all those things have to be on order “just in case” long in advance.

  13. blake October 27th, 2010 at 10:48 am

    Betsy,

There will be other ways to improve the team if Lee stays in Texas. They could sign Crawford or Werth, they could upgrade the bullpen etc….and we still don’t know.his the trade market may develop. The season isn’t over yet and things can change. Lee will be the top priority but there will be other ways they can improve themselves if that falls through.

  14. blake October 27th, 2010 at 10:49 am

Sorry for the double post….I.thought the first one.got ate.

  15. Shame Spencer October 27th, 2010 at 10:49 am

blake, I couldn’t agree more. Lee is who we want but isn’t the end all be all. Like I said earlier, we have three relatively low cost outfielders to work with. I wouldn’t advocate trading them all.. I’ll leave that to Chip, but anything is possible. As long as it makes us better, Cash will do it.

Blake, I guess my point is that there aren’t a lot of moves Cash can make without having to totally overhaul the team or ravaging the farm system; that’s what happens when most of your lineup is locked up to very long contracts. There needs to be a backup plan for no-Lee, but to be honest, there isn’t any – this offseason almost completely depends on signing him.

    ———

Why so fatalistic on this topic one week after the ALCS?

You want Lee yet are so concerned about long term contracts? Make up your mind.

Whatever you choose, have more faith. You are a fan of the team with the highest payroll, coming off a WS title, with the most promising slugger in it’s minor league rookery, and plenty of talented arms and young catchers to trade.

Yet you’re not confident or satisfied.

  17. upstate kate October 27th, 2010 at 10:52 am

I was listening to the Cliff Lee all the time…I mean mlb xm yesterday and they were interviewing a former player whose name I now forget. He said it all comes down to the money…I would guess it would be a combo of money and security…I doubt that TX can top the Yankees in either regard.

  18. GreenBeret7 October 27th, 2010 at 10:52 am

For those interested in how the winter kids are doing, here’s the numbers. The players doing best are INF/OF Brandon Laird, Catcher Jose Gil (who should be in Trenton this coming season – unless traded) and swingman Craig Heyer.

    http://mlb.mlb.com/milb/stats/org.jsp?id=nyy

  19. blake October 27th, 2010 at 10:55 am

If the Rangers sign Lee and keep their current core of players together (Hamilton, Cruz, Wilson, Kinsler etc)..then I see no way they can avoid a 140-150 million dollar payroll at some point in the near future. None of those guys are going to get any cheaper and Hamilton may get more than Lee in a couple years if he stays healthy. I think that’s what the Rangers are going to have to convince Lee of…..that they will be willing and able to go there with their payroll to stay competitive over the life of his contract.

    Betsy,

What does her experience with a few drunk fans in YS have to do with her happiness in the NY/NJ area?

  21. West Coast Yankee Fan October 27th, 2010 at 10:58 am

It’s all about pitching and I hope that Cashman will be be focused on that first and foremost, starting with Cliff Lee but certainly not ending there whether they sign him or not.

Sabathia’s knee is a far bigger concern than some are making it out to be IMO. Not because of that injury so much, it’s relatively minor. But he is 300+ pounds and that is a recipe for disaster.

  22. RayVT October 27th, 2010 at 11:00 am

When I think about it, Texas doesn’t really need Cliff Lee. Their minor leagues are loaded. They have some arms that are impressive and potential to trade for some really good pitchers. They could use the 2010 model of adding a FA quality arm before Sept for 2011.

They do need to leave the impression that they want Lee! First they need to sign the hitters, and they need to get Bengie Molina to come back for 1 more year as well as catching is their weak link IMO.

For a SP to replace Lee, they could sign or trade for Garza, Shields, or Oswalt type.

The Yankees on the other hand are handcuffed if Lee doesn’t sign with the Yanks.

The dirty little secret that Maddox put a spotlight on was what I thought when I read that.

Bud preaches parity. Rangers having postseason success could be the poster child for parity considering their lack of post 162 game success in the past.

  24. Fran the original October 27th, 2010 at 11:02 am

    Shame, you’re welcome.

You know by Mrs. Lee complaining about the Yankees fans, maybe they think it will get the Yankees to increase their offer.

I seem to remember that we all thought CC wouldn’t come here because he wanted to live on the West Coast.

  25. blake October 27th, 2010 at 11:03 am

Also, no matter what the Rangers do or offer they will never be able to match the stage that is NY and Yankee stadium. The rangers are always going to.be secondary in Dallas to the Cowboys. If Lee wants the most money and the biggest stage as has been speculated…..then there’s only one place to get it.

If he got down to say 270 / 280 he probably would feel better with less stress on his knees, ankles, hips etc. Just want CC to continue to be a stud, healthy guy who performs at an optimum level for years to come

“?..that they will be willing and able to go there with their payroll to stay competitive over the life of his contract.”

Hmmm this sounds familiar…….maybe the Yankees just wait 2 years and trade a couple of players for Lee and have the Rangers eat 1/3 of the salary.

  29. Vineyard Yankee October 27th, 2010 at 11:08 am

    ESPN is reporting that:

Sandy Alderson is set to become the new Mets GM, an announcement could come on Friday.

Curt Young formerly of the A’s has the inside track to become the Sux pitching coach

  30. blake October 27th, 2010 at 11:10 am

    Pat,

That does sound familiar….too bad they still owe Arod money from the first go around.

    ———————————————-

There is an argument to be made that the Yankees have a more impressive set of arms in their minor leagues than the Rangers do.

Their prize arms still down there are Martin Perez and Tanner Scheppers, and Scheppers has struggled so much starting they moved him back to the bullpen in July.

Brackman, Betances, Banuelos is a set I am not sure any team in MLB can match and this is to say nothing of guys like Nova, Noesi, Warren, etc.

  32. Shame Spencer October 27th, 2010 at 11:14 am

    pat -

It leaves me with the impression that Selig would do just about anything to enhance the possibility that the cast of characters in the playoffs each season has at least one member who hasn’t been to the party in awhile.

I wonder what the ultimate goal of parity is? 30 teams playing around .500 ball? Or simply no team ever able to repeat their success?

  34. 108 stitches October 27th, 2010 at 11:19 am

This is one year where timing will be important for Brian Cashman. The Derek amd Mariano deals require only the money aspect.
What happens with Cliff Lee hinges on Andy’s return and other free agent or trading moves. If a deal with Lee doesn’t materialize then better pitching has to come through trading in order to upgrade.
One move could counteract another. If Brett Gardner (for example) were necessary to be used as part of a deal for a quality pitcher then Carl Crawford enters the picture.
Cashman usually has his ducks in a row.

I’m not a hockey fan at all. I’ve never been able to follow the puck, really. (I did see one game live and I loved it, though – completely different when you can see entire plays unfold, but I digress…)

It always seemed silly to me – why have a regular season at all? Just start with the playoffs and get it over with – I mean what is it, only 4 or so teams DON’T make the playoffs???

Baseball’s not that bad. Yet. But there is talk of adding another wild card team. Frankly, I think contraction would be the best way to go, but that’s really going against the grain, isn’t it? I mean, after all, isn’t any city that wants one entitled to host an MLB team?

  52. Doreen October 27th, 2010 at 11:43 am

I don’t know if there’s “weight issue,” but what could it hurt to lose a few pounds? But I don’t think he’s out of shape at all. He’s certainly got stamina. And it’s difficult to tell with the way he wears his uniform exactly what form he takes anyway. He’s certainly not a small person by any stretch of the imagination.

  53. upstate kate October 27th, 2010 at 11:44 am

I know there is talk of adding an additional wild card, but when the reality of that means 3 teams from the AL east make the play offs, it is less likely to happen. Thee is also talk of having the first round be best of 7, which I agree with. They could cut down on the off days so the season isn’t any longer.

  54. Shame Spencer October 27th, 2010 at 11:49 am

Doreen – You’re right about the hockey playoffs. They let that get out of control completely in an attempt to create a more fair and balanced system. Go figure! And yes, its the one sport where live action really cannot be replaced by a TV. I’m always shocked while watching games how slow the players tend to look, yet when you see it live they are all over the place in a flash.. but I digress..

This entire debate just ends up coming back to money and the power of these leagues to generate it. More teams = more cash. I agree there should be less teams instead of more to create a better on-field product, but then again I also don’t see the harm in another wild card (mostly because the division system is clearly not balanced in terms of competition). I guess I just need to be satisfied with the fact that Selig will never get a hard cap on the game the way Bettman did. Without that, Selig can really only do so much damage (which is a LOT as it turns out I guess lol).

Which leads me to this thought..as part of the contract agreement with the yankees – can they offer to donate like $10 million to his leukemia charity (or if he doesn’t have one to any leukemia charity) sort of to sweeten the pot for him to sign with the yankees. Is this illegal to do? Would it count against the actual contract and jack up the 2011 payroll?

Its something they should do anyway, but if it means to make Cliff and Kristen more accepting of playing with the yankees then they should do it as it has many more benefits then just having Lee pitch here.

Thanks for the kind words, all. Even randy! He must be having one of his rare good days. ;)

As for a safe word, it wouldn’t be safe anymore if I posted it here. But it rhymes with Tien-ping Bang. (And “Bang” is not pronounced like the word that accompanies a gunshot; it sounds like the thing that helps Tim Lincecum cope with the long baseball season).

Patrick: who’s the wife on the bottom left???

  65. SAS October 27th, 2010 at 12:05 pm

Cliff Lee will make his decision on where he wants to play after the WS. Right now he has a job to do. I do think he will give the Yankees offer a great deal of weight. Mrs. Lee’s dislike of NY fans is understandable.

Lee’s place in baseball history may make a difference to him, and playing baseball in the Big Apple does make a difference whether it should or not.

She (Mrs. Lee) has no earthly idea about being on the other side of things, and how great fans are to their own. I think it can all be explained away if, in fact, that is the only factor holding things up.

    —————————————————————————————————-

Sabathia is a young man who should heel quickly from relatively minor surgery. Maybe he will be told to shed some of that weight to put less stress on his knees. We shall see. After the WS his biggest job will be trying to snag Lee for the Yankees. I hope his presence in NY will make a difference to Lee.

Now, I’m not saying CC is just in a situation where the “camera adds 10 pounds” or anything. Dude is large, no doubt about it. But I do have a different perspective of players weight after meeting Joba. He was much more slimmed down than I ever could have expected. I wonder how much room CC has in the uni…

    ——————————————————————–

Interesting point. It’s shocking how skinny some actresses are in person. The “camera adds 10 pounds” thing is definitely not a myth.

You can be 5-10, 175 and have minor knee surgery.

CC is a big man. Part of the reason why he is as strong and fit (yes, fit) enough to handle the workload.

It’s not a big deal and he will be 100% when ST rolls around.

Cliff Lee? To me, this is entering Phil Hughes-like angst on the blog.

Sabathia’s size is a part of the reason he can pitch the number of innings and throw the number of pitches he can. He’s a strong guy, and unlike some, he ha not become muscle bound, but, he’s still strong as an ox. He seems to have been born with the same type of rubber arm that David Wells and Mickey Lolich had. Interestingly, they were all wide bodied.

Does anyone besides me think Joba may return to being a SP in 2010? I think his role in BP is not a great need and with his arm stretched out he may be an asset in 2011. This would especially be true if Pettite or Lee are not Yankees next year. I could even see it if they both are if Burnett were traded.

  101. Nick in SF October 27th, 2010 at 12:38 pm

    Very funny, Tom.

I hope the real stuckey99 cooperates with the FBI investigation; impersonating a robot is a Future Crime.

kd: they looked great in the rain on Saturday (I left when it was 40-3, too wet  ), but I want to see them do it on the road before I get too excited. If Riley can just be adequate, grind up the clock a bit so our defense doesn’t get worn down… it could happen.

  102. GreenBeret7 October 27th, 2010 at 12:41 pm

I’m not so sure, Ray. I think that would put Chamberlain back into the same situation that Hughes was this season. I’d prefer keeping him the bullpen and adding Noesi and David Phelps or Andrew Brackman to the pen. Much of that would depend on Pettitte returning and signing Lee or trading for a Billingsley type.

  103. Jacques Strappe October 27th, 2010 at 12:50 pm

Regarding CC Sabathia’s large physical presence ….

I remember reading about him when he first came to NY. Apparently he does a good amount of time running or riding (not sure if bike or exercise bike) and stays in really good shape all year round, but he said he’ll never be able to trim down to 230 or 240 or whatever people might want or expect him to be. He’s just a big man … to start with he’s 6 feet 7 inches tall.

It’s not as if he’s playing shortstop or center field, or as if he once had Randy Johnson’s build before going on a diet consisting of weight-gain shakes along a generous amount of pizzas, cheeseburgers & fried chicken. He’s always been large … not just tall but large.

I wonder if he didn’t stay in shape, might he be closer to 400 pounds than 300?
