World Series Rangers Giants Baseball

My guess is you were more excited about this day when it was happening a year ago.

No Yankees in this year’s Series, but tonight is a premier pitching matchup for all baseball fans. That is, of course, assuming you can actually watch the World Series.

“It’s going to be kind of hard unless FOX and Cablevision (reach an agreement),” Joe Girardi said. “I did put on Game 6 (of the NLCS) on my computer. I will watch parts of it, I’m sure. It’s kind of hard to be a baseball guy and not watch it. There are times that the games start and you put the kids to bed. But I’ll watch it.”

Girardi and I are in the same boat. I’ll either find a local establishment where I can watch the game, or I’ll follow along online. Either way, it’s Game 1 of the World Series. Yankees or no Yankees, it’s worth seeing.

• For those of you who can watch: Pregame coverage on FOX begins at 7:30 p.m. First pitch is scheduled for 7:57.

• The ceremonial first pitch will be a collective effort from Orlando Cepeda, Monte Irvin, Juan Marichal, Willie Mays, Willie McCovey and Gaylord Perry.

• Major League Baseball just passed along the lineups for both teams.

Cablevision will change their tune rather quickly if people just left their crappy service.

Maybe there’s another award in Cano’s future and this was a way to recognize the others?

Ha. That took me a sec to figure out, but then I figured it out.

  3. Bronx Jeers October 27th, 2010 at 5:33 pm

    1 Jeter
    2 Granderson
    3 Tex
    4 Alex
    5 Cano
    6 Jorge
    7 Berkman
    8.Swisher

    I used Cotts. I only estimated Hughes +$4M, Logan +$160K, Jeter -$2.6M, & Cliff Lee +$22M

Of course others are getting raises on 40-Man:
    Tex +$3M, Cano +$1M, Grandy +$2.7M, Swish +$2.3M, Golson +$400K

Should be $231.54M instead of $250M as I added Cliff twice!!

    RayVT-

But they won’t pay the full salary on a number of those guys when they aren’t on the 25 man roster, so it will be less than $231MM by some amount I didn’t calculate,

  9. rb from LI October 27th, 2010 at 5:40 pm

Bronx Jeers, they’re in the NL park. You need a pitcher in that lineup! :)

lol I wish we could add two Cliff Lee’s! Sadly, the cloning process would be difficult and illegal. Not to mention, he might not have the same aggressive mentality, or the baseball IQ.

  14. RayVT October 27th, 2010 at 5:48 pm

Now Jeter, Mo & Andy may all take cuts or defferred payments that somehow could reduce the payroll for 2011. Of course Andy may not come back. Marte & Igawa’s $4M each come off the books in 2012. ARod’s 2012 cost go down $2M as well.

    Pat -

I posted this earlier. You can go to ivi.com, and get all the NY & Seattle stations, including FOX for $4.95/month. The first month is free, so you can watch real TV, on any and all computers in your home. After 30 days, cancel. There is no contract required.

I use it to watch the NY Giants FB, cheaper than paying DIRECTV for the NFL package.

  16. RayVT October 27th, 2010 at 5:50 pm

    Dylan October 27th, 2010 at 5:47 pm

These salary issues do become complicated. LOL! Maybe we could get a 2 for 1 special with Cliff Lee & Clone Cliff Lee.

  17. GreenBeret7 October 27th, 2010 at 5:50 pm

Corona, Romine, Igawa and De La Rosa won’t be on the 40 man roster next year, though. If I had to make a guess, Sanchez and Mitre won’t either. Laird will be, however.

  18. kd October 27th, 2010 at 5:52 pm

my prediction: cashman goes into ninja mode and we don’t hear much all off season. jeter and rivera don’t seem like they want their negotiations to be public. andy will let cash know and there will be a quick contract.

cliff lee is the wild card, but cash seems to like to do things quietly

Buy one, gets one 50% off. lol there is no guarantee that Clone Cliff Lee would ever be as good as the original Cliff Lee, but I would take him at a discount! I would make him a relief pitcher. Could you imagine how demoralizing it would be for other teams, when they finally knock Cliff Lee out of the game only to face the same pitcher?

My version of reality has the AL winning the ASG.

  24. Betsy October 27th, 2010 at 6:03 pm

    Even if I had Fox, I wouldn’t watch……..

LGY, I said we have unwieldy contracts – not that the budget is unwieldy. Hal has a budget – we know that’s true. Cash already said that we aren’t going to have a lot of $$$ coming off the books this year and you yourself said we now have to deal with raises for Joba, etc.. in arbitration. If Lee signs, he eats up a giant portion of the budget and that means Cash will have to be creative in terms of improvements he can make. Hal is not George – he’s just not. That is not a criticism of him, it’s a fact. I think Hal is a terrific owner.

  25. Asd October 27th, 2010 at 6:05 pm

The only interest I have in the WS is that the Rangers lose. My… um… “sources” say that a Rangers loss increases the changes of a Yankee Lee victory.

  26. Betsy October 27th, 2010 at 6:06 pm

Also, LGY – they turn contentious because I don’t appreciate having my words twisted. I have to watch what I say on this board because when I make comments that people don’t agree with, I get mocked. How sad is that? You and I don’t agree much on anything, especially Phil, and maybe I’m just tired of those conversations taking the turn that they did.

I’m guessing that the Yankees might move some of those like Albaladejo, Sanchez, Corona in minor league deals. Nothing major involving those, but, I fully expect Nova to be moved in part of a larger deal.

    Betsy

Lee is the improvement Cashman seems to be deciding to make. Cash can spend that money anyway he chooses.

    What is different under Hal?

It looks like the Yankees are will be going with something like a 220 to 230 million dollar payroll next year.

They were at 213 this past season?

Would it be higher under George?

  34. Betsy October 27th, 2010 at 6:28 pm

    GB, thanks for the updates!

  35. Doreen October 27th, 2010 at 6:28 pm

Because the Giants are on the West Coast now, we have a tendency to forget the rich history they have and the legendary players that were a part of their organization.

One of the highlights of our visit to AT&T Park was seeing all the photographs and memorabilia from the franchise. I’ve got pictures – perhaps during this series, I’ll post them.

    Go Giants!!

  36. Betsy October 27th, 2010 at 6:33 pm

LGY, and Lee is the biggest and best improvement they can make. Either way, my comments were not meant as criticism of Hal.

  37. ericns1 October 27th, 2010 at 6:35 pm

Not watching but GO GIANTS! If George was around he would sign Crawford, Lee and anyone else he wanted! Would he have sent Costanza on the recruiting trip though?

  38. GreenBeret7 October 27th, 2010 at 6:37 pm

Romine finished 2-4 with a pair of singles. Laird had a mixed day with a 1-4 with the solo homer, but 3 strike outs.

  39. GreenBeret7 October 27th, 2010 at 6:38 pm

    My pleasure, Betsy.

  40. kd October 27th, 2010 at 6:43 pm

  44. yanksfansince67 October 27th, 2010 at 6:50 pm

I grew up with the notion that beyond rooting for your team, you rooted for your league.
(I rooted for the Red Sawx in 86 against the Mets)

I have always felt that the team that beat my team should beat everyone else, to at least make my team look better. (If SF sweeps, for example, what does that say about the Yankees?)

I realize the Lee factor changes everything but if he was not an issue, aren’t we supposed to root for the AL team?

There has been a lot of fantasy land trade talks and such today. I honor of that ive thrown together my “fantasyland” opening day lineup and rotation.

    Jeter SS
    Granderson CF
    Camp 2B
    Arod 3B
    Teixera 1B
    Kemp LF
    Swisher RF
    Posada C/DH
    Montero C/DH

    Sabathia
    Lee
    Hughes
    Pettite
    Burnett

I think the rotation is realistic….don’t know so much about the lineup but hey thats why its fantasyland…..disclaimer: ill be perfectly fine if Gardner is in there instead.

    Great minds?

  59. GreenBeret7 October 27th, 2010 at 7:15 pm

Laird has some fine tuning to work on with his defense. Rodriguez, Nettles and Kelleher can help him fix that. Versatility is one of the reasons NYY has him playing the outfield in the AFL. He should be able to play a more than decent defense at all four corner spots. He has power to all fields and draws a few walks. The only offensive part that he has to work on a little better contact. He’ll probably have his 100 strikeouts over a full season, but, he’ll get it figured out. Laird will also be on the 40 man roster this winter. Romine isn’t as far advanced as Montero, offensively or defensively.

Romine has a lot of trouble with passed balls and catcher’s interference errors. Romine would be a better asset if he were more versatile, too. Some outfield and and corner infield positions would be perfect. He’s very athletic and has the hands and footspeed to play the corners, as well as catch. That’s the best way for NYY to corral the payroll…make their players versatile.

For those who have seen Willie Mccovey played, Who was the better hitter in their prime between him, Stargell and Strawberry?

Orlando Cepeda was better than all of them had his knees held up. However, McCovey was better than stargell and strawberry, but, only because Strawberry wrecked his own career.

  61. yanksfansince67 October 27th, 2010 at 7:21 pm

  62. Yogi Mantle October 27th, 2010 at 7:21 pm

I don’t really care about the WS, but tonight should be a good pitching match up. I’ll probably tune in to see how this first round goes.

I think the Giants will win this. I don’t think the Rangers are any better hitters than the Phillies had, and that offense got shut down while the Giants scored enough to put them ahead. I also don’t think the Rangers pitching is better than what the Phillies had going. Other than Lee, and I would think Lee/Halladay are going to produce similar results, I just don’t think the Rangers are as good as the Yankee pitching staff made them look.

  63. Doreen October 27th, 2010 at 7:25 pm

I couldn’t agree more. Multi-position players make their careers more valuable. If players like Brandon Laird and Austin Romine have the tools and are willing to work at other positions it’s well worth their while to do so.

  68. Fran the original October 27th, 2010 at 7:31 pm

    Doreen,

Would those be the same players that voted Derek and Alex the most overrated players in baseball last year or the year before?

I know that Mark Sanchez and Eli Manning (both QBs) of 1st place teams, were also just both voted most overrated players in the NFL.

    IMO it’s a NY bias.

Having players that can play multiple positions not only make themselves more valuable to themselves, but, to the team. Being able to trade them for other pieces will help them tremendously when they become free agents. It would also help the team and not have to spend millions on a bench for one dimensional players like the Johnsons, Hinskes and Damons of the baseball world. It’s something that needs to be started in the early minor leagues, though.

Meanwhile Bengie Molina received a nice ovation from the Giants. Nice to see.

Derek and Alex may not be the most over-rated, but they’re right up there at the top of the most overpaid. Let’s see how Cashman does less with more this offseason.

Go Rangers! (want them to win it all)

Go Tim! (want the local boy to do well)

Go SEVEN GAMES! (want to squeeze out every drop of baseball left)
