Some late-night links
A few notes to snack on if you’re not into the NFL game tonight …
• Jon Miller and Joe Morgan won’t be returning as voices of ESPN Sunday Night Baseball. If the speculation that Dan Shulman will become the new play-by-play guy turns out to be true, I’d be happy – he does a great job.
• The Jim Leyritz DUI trial is taking some interesting turns.
• Jon Heyman did an interesting column on free agents to be wary of and free agents who could be big bargains. I tend to agree with him on Hideki Matsui – in the right situation, he can still be a serious hitter.
• Congratulations to good buddy Bryan Hoch, who does a great job covering the Yankees and ran the New York Marathon over the weekend.
• Honestly, does it get any better in the NFL than when the Cowboys are this bad? I mean, who doesn’t like this (other than close relatives of Wade Phillips)?
Have a great night. Back at it tomorrow.
* That’s an Associated Press shot of, you know, the moon.

No more Joe Morgan? There is a baseball God and he is good.

That news made me so happy. I can watch Sunday Night Baseball with the sound on again.
No more John Miller nor Joe Morgan? Gee. That’s too bad. Excuse me while I go running through the streets hollering with glee.
By the way: did you know that Joe Morgan is a Hall-of-Famer? I think they might have mentioned it once or twice during their broadcasts.
On Leyritz: the claim that he didn’t run a red light is old news to me. I read about this stuff months ago, and there apparently is as much evidence to suggest that it was as likely, or more, that it was the woman who ran the light, and not Leyritz.
He’s still going to have to live the rest of his life with the guilt over this, but if what he says is true I really hope he is exonerated.
So my friend is married to a guy in the Nationals minor league system and I was talking to her about going to a National vs. Yankees game in Spring Training. She said her husband can probably get us tickets. While I was thinking about the logistics, it occured to me that Stephen Strasburg(maybe, dont know if the TJ surgery will mean he doesnt go) and Bryce Harper would probably be at ST as well. I asked her if she thought he would get me their autographs, he said he would but then he said why would I want theirs when I can have his? This was more for Upstate Kate because we like to talk about the autographs I am potentially getting. I was just so excited I had to share the news.
Sam, agreed on the Cowboys. Jones fired the wrong guy, he should’ve gotten rid of the GM, the guy who’s more directly responsible for their fiasco.

Sterling’s contract expires after the 2011 season. Hopefully then I’ll be able to listen to the radio with the sound on again.
“Joe Morgan won’t be returning”
This is GREAT news! I can’t stand listening to him. The entire ESPN baseball broadcast is awful, but Morgan is the worst.
Rob B, good point about the number of times morgan’s hof selection gets mentioned.
Did you also know that his team, the 76 Reds was one of the greatest teams ever. I think he mentioned that a few times also.
Matsui would is a very good option in addition to Thome or Branyan as a big LH bat for part time DH/bench role.
Don’t think he would accept that type of role, but it would be worth checking into.
Whether Leyritz ran a red light or not, he killed a 30-year-old mother of two while driving drunk with a blood-alcohol level of 0.18 percent. Blaming the victim – that’s what lawyers do.
I’d like to see ESPN hire Sterling, Waldman, Kay, and Flaherty so I wouldn’t be subjected to them nearly as often.
Extremely good news regarding the sale of the Scranton AAA team to the SWB Yankees.
Scranton is very well located for the Yankees AAA franchise. However, that ball park was completely inadequate and inappropriate for yankee prospects to play in due to the abysmal drainage situation on that field. It’s completely unacceptable and Yankee prospects should not be subjected to those conditions and the associated risks for injury.
With new ownership and the Yankees parent organization now having a direct ownership stake in the team that drainage situation and the stadium will be addressed.
It’s for the best all around. Good for Scranton to keep the team. Works for the Yankees to have the AAA team conveniently located. The Yankee minor leaguers will hopefully soon have a more professional stadium to play in.
Very good news for the minor league system. That drainage situation was ridiculous.
A girl in one of my classes a few years back told me she could never be a Yankees fan because it was her friend that he killed.
I know it won’t happen, but I wouldn’t mind the Yankees signing Pavano to a one year contract.
“A girl in one of my classes a few years back told me she could never be a Yankees fan because it was her friend that he killed.”
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I’m not sure what that has to do with the Yankees, just as it has nothing to do with the Angels, Dodgers, RS, Padres, or Rangers, the other teams that he played for.
Rich In NJ
That’s exactly what I said to her, she would bring it up every time I wore a Yankees shirt. I told her I was sorry for her friend but he played for the Yankees back in 1996, its a totally different team now. She stopped after that.
Now only if the Yankees could get rid of Sterling and
Oh my goodness gracious I could listen to Yankee games on the radio. Another thing that annoys me about Sterling is you have to wait like 5 minutes to hear the score of the game. John you are doing radio we don’t know the score when we tune in!!!
I remember being very young and listening to Rizzuto and Coleman on a little transistor radio with my dad at Orchard Beach. They really made you feel like you were there.
Japanese SS/2B got posted, Tsuyoshi Nishioka , switch hitter who hit .346 the past season, has good patience and only gap power. Only 26
Yankees should bid on him and let Jeter walk.
As a 25 year old he hit: .346 .423 .482 .905 n the NPB. Not gonna hit near there in MLB but he has skills.
They used to flip-flop the TV and Radio guys, part on the radio, part on TV.

AL-proven…
WCYF, You do realize that if Leyritz didn’t run the light, that means the woman did? Being that she was also drunk, that would make Leyritz the victim.
And please spare me the “innocent victim mother” stuff. The woman was driving drunk without a seatbelt. Not exactly a exemplary mother.
Jeter:
Very strategic move on the Yanks to release that information from an “anonymous unauthorized” source to gauge public reaction and shine as the good guys.
I like the move. It’s business. I particularly like how they specifically say, “we are going to pay him more than he is worth” It makes them look good that they are taking care of “one of our own”.
Getting a deal done with Jeter at this point takes knowledge gerrymandering.
Bobcat used to say, “you hear what they want you to hear” and in this cast he is absolutely correct.
If for the slim-to-none chance the a deal with Jeter does get ugly, Tampa will look like the good guys. I still feel it’s to both parties benefit to get it done quickly and quietly, but you have to appreciate this maneuver.
You’re entitled to your opinion. However the judge ruled that the victim being drunk has no bearing on whether Leyritz was drunk or ran the light. Also, Auto insurance companies NEVER agree voluntarily to pay the max, they will go to extraordinary lengths to avoid it. Yet, Leyritz’s insurance company after seeing the evidence volunteered to pay the victim’s family the maximum allowed.
Leyritz is a bad egg. He was charged with domestic assault in an incident with his former wife and arrested twice for drinking in violation of his bail bond. If he wasn’t drinking and driving the woman would not have died.
By the way, I never said she was an exemplary mother did I? But I do feel compassion for her two kids.
“knowledge of gerrymandering” like politics. Is what I meant, to be clear.
Getting a deal done is really on Jeter. Of course, the Yankees will overpay him; that’s unavoidable. The issue is how much of an overpayment will Jeter need in order to assuage his pride.
“Leyritz is a bad egg.”
I really don’t think it’s in anyone’s interests to judge people without first-hand knowledge of their character.
I do not have a problem with anything Jim Leyritz did. Leyritz helped win the Yankees World Series. A hero in my book.
Rich, we obviously have differing standards as to what is acceptable and what isn’t in society. I think that hitting your ex-wife and killing someone while driving drunk makes one a bad egg. But that’s ok, you have the right to your opinion.
Wish an umpire or referee was the victim. Jeff Triplett, Bill McCreary, Ed Hochuli perhaps
Leyritz is a bum, but he’s not on trial for bad character. He’s on trial for manslaughter.
Both drivers were drunk and one of them ran a light. If it wasn’t him, then it was her. That would make her (the innocent mother out drunk driving without a seatbelt at 3 in the morning) the perpetrator and Leyritz the “victim”.
That’s not opinion, that’s just how it is.
West Coast Fan wrote: “Also, Auto insurance companies NEVER agree voluntarily to pay the max, they will go to extraordinary lengths to avoid it.” I don’t know anything about the Leyritz case, but the above statement is entirely false as applies to liability insurance, particularly in Florida. I worked in insurance.
Under Florida law, if the plaintiff offers to settle the case and the insurance company turns down the offer, that could be considered bad faith. The punishment for bad faith is that the insurance company no longer has a policy limit. They’re liable for the entire loss, even if it’s far above the policy limit.
I know of one case where insured really wasn’t responsible for a murder, yet the insurance company offered to pay their full policy limit. They feared that a jury would decide that their insured was liable. Then the insurance company might get hit with a bad faith situation that could have cost them many millions of dollars.
In short, when the damages are severe, even when liability isn’t fully clear, insurance companies in FL are under a lot of pressure to pay their max limit. As I said, I know nothing about the Leyritz situation. My only point is that nothing should be concluded from the insurance company’s willingness to pay their entire limit.
Lost–I never would have thought that Bobcat and gerrymandering could be used in the same blog post, let alone the same sentence. Excellent work. Any news on Lee? “Lost in Little Rock?”
Jeter–sign him already. The comparator is Posada, who they signed for 4 x $13 million at age 36. Jeter’s getting roughly the same (he doesn’t have the Mets kicking his tires like Po did–does he?).
Leyritz–I have to admit, if the stuff now coming out is true, I may have been a bit hasty to judge him on this one. It sounds like it was a late night, both were drunk, and both ran the light. Initially, I remember the media stating that “this was a mother of two coming home from work who got hit by a wife beating low life ex baseball player.” Read the archive news reports on the internet. This doesn’t excuse what happened, but I think there may have been a rush to judgement on this one.
“Very strategic move on the Yanks to release that information from an “anonymous unauthorized” source to gauge public reaction and shine as the good guys.”
I was struck by that as well. That leak was from the Yankees and it was clearly engineered as a trial balloon to gauge reaction. It was also leaked to set a narrative that 45-60/3yrs would be “overpaying” from the yankees perspective as it was.
They basically sent that leak to establish that 3yrs/45-60 is already generous and already accounts for the “value add” of Jeter’s history and name.
The Yanks leaked that Montero story to set in motion the idea that Jorge’s time with the club is coming to an end. There’s no way Posada could hear that story and not get that message. I think that was the desired goal even more than it was any confirmation that Montero is going to get the job.
And this leak feels like it’s squarely sending a message to Jeter’s camp and to the public about where the yankees are in these negotiations.
“Rich, we obviously have differing standards as to what is acceptable and what isn’t in society.”
How would you know that? I have never discussed my standards. I’m merely pointing out that people, myself included, have too little information to make judgments about people we don’t know because there are at least two, if not more, sides to every story, and we don’t have those sides.
“I think that hitting your ex-wife and killing someone while driving drunk makes one a bad egg. But that’s ok, you have the right to your opinion.”
Was Leyritz convicted of hitting his wife?
You didn’t say that he was. Was that an inadvertent omission on your part or was it because there was no conviction? If there was no conviction, there may be exculpatory facts. Since I don’t know what the full facts are, I don’t judge.
Are you saying that you never got behind the wheel after a drink? Is so, good for you. I have made that mistake. Fortunately, no one got hurt. I was young and stupid. but I’m not about to call someone a bad egg based on that alone.
RSM – The judge ruled that the victim being drunk has no bearing on whether Leyritz was drunk or ran the red light. In any event, it was first reported he ran the red light, now they are questioning that. In any event, if he had a yellow light and she went through a red light he still killed someone due to being drunk. That’s involuntary manslaughter or involuntary vehicular manslaughter.
Rich in NJ:
The point was that the spotlight was cast down on Close/Jeter now. It would be hard felt if they balked at the offer even if it is less than he made last year and less than Close desires to land.
I was simply commenting on the move by making it public just how great the Yankees treat their own.
Lastly, I have to say again.. The tone was set by the way they handle Damon and stood their ground last year. Could they have given Damon a few extra million and not blink? Sure, but the point was made that this is a group that is not going to operate like they have been the last decade even if the new owners share the same last name.
I think the Yanks are fed up with the “Yankees tax”. It got to the point where players expected above market value to go play with them just because, “they can afford it”. It was time to put an end to the perception and unfortunately it was at the cose of Damon to make that clear.
With all that said, it’s loud and clear. Yankees are done with that business model and this market is much different than it was a few years ago.. but IMHO, you have to make one last exception. One final exception to the one player who deserves that “Yankees tax” and that of course is Derek Jeter.
Give ‘em 3/54 and move on. Yanks are closer to 3/48 right now. For Jete you go the extra 6 mil.
No Rich I never got behind the wheel drunk. That doesn’t make me anyone special, lots of people don’t drive drunk. As regards being convicted of assaulting his ex wife. She had a gash on her face and there was blood smeared on the door. He says she faked it. I guess that’s possible – anything is and you have the right to believe what you want to. This is what women have been going through for eons being battered.
Sorry about all the typos tonight, I am still getting used to this tiny MacBook Air 11″. Never thought I would fall in love with a computer, but this is the best gadget I’ve ever owned. CB:
Hey man ! Good to see you around. Again you clearly recapitulate and offer feedback right on the money ! No pun intended
David In Cal thanks for the information that was very informative. It is contradicted though by Lester Munson, a Chicago lawyer and journalist who reports on investigative and legal issues in the sports industry. Here is what he said on the matter:
“One indication of the challenge facing Leyrtiz and Bogenschutz (his attorney) is the settlement made a few months ago in the wrongful death case. Leyritz’s auto insurance carrier looked over the evidence and concluded that it should pay Veitch’s family the maximum allowed for a liability claim under Leyritz’s policy. Insurance companies will do anything to avoid paying the limits of a liability policy. They will delay. They will obfuscate the facts of an accident. And they will argue and stretch the law.
They pay the limits voluntarily only when the policy holder’s guilt is overwhelming. The payment of the liability limit in this case means that a group of professional claims analysts and lawyers at Leyritz’s insurance company decided that he was at fault.
In addition to the payment of the maximum liability limit, Leyritz has voluntarily agreed to pay the Veitch family $100,000 of his own money. It will be an onerous burden for Leyrtiz. Beginning in April, he’ll pay them $1,000 each month for 100 months from money he hopes to be able to earn. It is yet another compelling indication of the strength of the evidence against Leyritz”.

Love him and can’t wait to land him.A little concern about his back towards the end of the season, but when you have a stud like Lee on your team, and know he isn’t likely to stick around, you use him as much as you want without worrying about next year.
The only thing I can is that we all know there are multiple clubs willing to pay Lee top dollar, but they don’t have what we have.. A video game/technology geek named C.C.

I’m merely pointing out what I see as undue deference in the MSM (and elsewhere) to Jeter. The Yankees have treated him superbly. They drafted him, developed him, surrounded him with enough talent to win 5 WS, and have made him immensely wealthy. The perception of Jeter would likely be very different if he had played for any other team.
But now, as he enters his age 37 season, the possibility that he is in a serious decline cannot be overlooked. Consequently, it’s reasonable that Jeter should bear a significant amount of the risk involved.
As a result, I think paying him any more than $15m a year for three years is absurd.
I am going to through this out there and see what comes back.. we need a bat.. a Damon replacement. Preferably a lefty that can use the short porch to their advantage. Nobody did that better than Johnny.
As much as I would love to see Crawford, I think he would be amazing complementing this team. He is an all around good guy and team player. He hustles and works just as hard as anyone.. Personally, I want him, but I don’t think it’s going to happen. Not because the Yankees aren’t interested but more so because CC II might not be. Pretend for a second he is and so are we.. what would you do about the outfield if you landed a guy like Crawford?
This is a big hypothetical, don’t come back with.. “It’s not happening..” we already made that point.
“No Rich I never got behind the wheel drunk. That doesn’t make me anyone special, lots of people don’t drive drunk.”
Good for you. For a long time, it was a regrettable aspect of your culture, tacitly condoned by law enforcement, based on my experience.
“As regards being convicted of assaulting his ex wife. She had a gash on her face and there was blood smeared on the door. He says she faked it. I guess that’s possible – anything is and you have the right to believe what you want to. This is what women have been going through for eons being battered.”
So you admit that you don’t know the full facts, neither do I. So I have reserved judgment.
The only thing worse than apple is apple name droppers.
CB:
Everybody knows already Posada’s gig is up except Posada. He has the hugest heart in the game and love this game like he is still a rookie. Problem is, his body is no longer in “rookie-shape”. It’s the typical case of Al Leiter, “My mind tells me to go get ‘em and I got good stuff, but my body tells me differently”.
Georgie gets it tho, he’ll deal with it. I do agree with him that he should be told to prepare as the everyday catcher, but be expect to have a limited role at the same time.
Man time flies, It seems like yesterday that we signed these contracts. Wow, at least we have a new ring to show for it.
Lost-
Good to see you as well. You should comment more often during the regular season. But it’s good to have you back for the hot stove!
To be honest, I find the Jeter story extremely boring. It was already beaten to death over a year ago. I’m surprised to see how adamantly people can argue about it and for such an extended period of time. It’s not like it’s the usual personnel decision where you have to judge whether or not the move should be made. Everyone has known for a long time Jeter would be back and both sides would come to some kind of agreement. It’s only an issue of price.
I was happy to see that leak as it struck me as the beginning of the end of this story. Too much has been made of these negotiations. I just think both sides are going to be pragmatic here and won’t start drawing inflammatory lines in the sand or making absolutist demands. Getting a deal done that makes sense for both sides is prohibitively in both sides interest.
Jeter and Mo are just organizational business. Those deals will get done.
Aftewards, Lee is clearly the most important priority but I do think that will get done as well. No guarantees but I think that’s where the odds are.
To me the most interesting story this winter will be what the Yankees might do on the trade market for a bat.
Jerkface,
Sure buddy.. would ever you say ! I’m in love this thing. I no longer have to carry around with me a spare tire.
Again, my typing is terrible tonight. I ask forgiveness. Fat fingers and a tired mind !
CB:
“I was happy to see that leak as it struck me as the beginning of the end of this story”.
Agreed.
Also, look at my “hypothetical” Crawford post above about a bat.
Lost-
Crawford is a quality player. I don’t think they can add him to the mix in a way that makes financial sense.
I think they’ll look for a bat but it’s going to be in the trade market.
Good night all.
Jeter/Yankees will get done. 3 yrs/$45-60M as I stated earlier today. Frankly, I think that if Jeter surpasses 3,000 hits, as he will, and the Yankees win one more WS, he retires on the spot. Same with Mo and Pettitte and Posada.
3 years and under 60 mil wins me brownies from 2 of you suckers.
“Pretend for a second he is and so are we.. what would you do about the outfield if you landed a guy like Crawford?”
Given their apparent desire to maintain a budget at or around $200m, they would have to trade Granderson or Swisher, unless the saved money elsewhere, like the with the contracts of their aging core.
Since that appears unlikely, if, hypothetically, they signed Crawford, I think they’d move Swisher; Granderson’s skillset is too to unique (speed, power, defense). Swish’s contract is reasonable and his value may be peaking.
That said, I’m not sure that the move would be an upgrade, unless they received an overwhelming offer for Swisher.
LOL@ JF
Gardner isn’t a RF. Granderson can play LF or CF. Wouldn’t make sense adding Crawford a LF unless Gardner could be moved, unless he became a 4th OF, and a new RF was added. Can’t afford Crawford & Werth.
Unless they can pry a cost controlled pitcher or bat for Swisher, swapping Swish for Crawford doesn’t do much. They’d have no right fielder (gardner in right?) and they’d acquire more payroll (swishers contract vs Crawfords more expensive deal + trade )
I drank enough beer tonight to realize three things.
1. I shouldn’t be posting while drinking (PWI should be a law, Posting While Intoxicated)
2. When the rare occasion occurs and I drink, I like to watch Family Guy.
3. Not only does my typing go out the window, but I use words incorrectly like “through instead of throw”.
Gardner can easily play RF. Again, not that I want to trade Swisher, but putting Gardner in RF isn’t issue.
Lost
That’s how I feel when I type comments in the mornings…when driving to school. I read over them and not only do they make no sense at all, I completely hack the spell job.
Crawford Granderson Gardner would catch all the balls and if Granderson hit 40 HRs we wouldn’t miss Swisher as much.
Jorge de la Rosa……could end up being a closer
Hudson…..would like to see him on this team
Downs….another one that would be a nice fit
So I read this in MLBTR …
‘The Yankees are likely to offer Derek Jeter a three-year deal worth $45-60MM, according to Wallace Matthews of ESPNNewYork.com. One of Matthews’ sources, someone intimately familiar with knowledge of the team’s negotiations with agent Casey Close, says the Yankees are prepared to “overpay” the shortstop.’
My guess is Matthews’ intimately familiar source is Casey Close himself.
Nah, as was laid out last night by Lost/CB that leak probably came directly from the Yankees in an attempt to both set the limit for the Jeter contract and also to mold public perception of what is overpaying him. If they indicate that they are willing to Overpay him with 45-60 million then Jeter looks greedy if he holds out for more than that. I think 3 years anywhere in that money range is fair for both sides…
Blake-
Good morning. Start your day off right.
We had some unusual weather in the area yesterday.
I managed to grab a few shots.
http://picasaweb.google.com/cy.....qjkpJGqFQ#
MTU,
Those are beautiful…was that a tornado or just a strange looking cloud.
Blake-
It’s amazing what we can see if we just take the time to look.
Just a passing shower but so beautiful.
Hope you’re teachin’ your son the CU. We always need good Pitching.
good morning all
that 3 year deal seems fair to me, hopefully it gets done soon
MTU
just beautiful…is there a jack o lantern in one of those pix?
Kate-
Nature is beautiful. Looks like a JOL but’s actually just a glass ornament in our backyard. That’s the way it happened to show up in the morning light.
MTU,
It is amazing. I actually have another on the way now….maybe he will be a lefty
Blake-
“maybe he will be a lefty”
Oh no Blake. Not another Communist. I hope not. We already have enough of them.
We need Pitching.
MTU,
Left Handed
congrats Blake
when is the due date?
Blake-
If he were born in Utah a good name would be “Bryce”.
I imagine he gets to wear # 2.
When’s the due date ?
Kate-
He’s looking it up.
it must be that higher math
Kate-
I guess. We need to give him a moment.
Kate-
The Jeter thing is so b-o-r-i-n-g IMO.
Been doin’ any hiking lately ?
no, not since Columbus day, its been mostly cool and wet
kate-
Do you guys X-country ski around there ?
the cold I don’t mind, its the rain
MTU, Kate,
Mid April I believe. Thanks.
yeah, ski and snow shoe…got to do something to get thru the winters
Kate-
We’ll take the rain out here but you guys can keep the cold.
Blake-
Then he should be available for Spring Training.
All the best.
Kate-
That’s what I figured.
Can’t just sit there and eat Smore’s all winter, right ?
Blake-
Just out of curiousity, What would you say is the most beautiful part of your State ? For example, If a person like me wanted to get out there hiking where should they go and what should they see ?
Where is the max. beauty IYO ?
Forget my spelling mistake on “curiosity”. It’s early.
MTU,
You ski?
Blake-
X-country and Snow shoe. Like Kate. This place is supposed to be Paradise for the Downhill skiing. I’m into it for the exercise. With my luck if I did Downhill I’d wind up doing a Sonny Bono.
You ?
MTU,
There are so many. Mount mitchell, Roan Mountain, there are all kinds of trails along the Blue Ridge Parkway with all levels of difficulty. Linville gorge is more advanced but has some really beautiful spots. You could always do the Appalachian trail or parts of it.
Blake-
Thanks. I was just wondering if there was one place that stood out from all the rest. In a class by itself- just like Mo.
If anybody missed it yesterday afternoon-Granderson is going to be on Martha Stewart’s show today.
Erin-
Good morning. I guess he wants to make a fashion statement too.
Great pics MTU
MTU,
They have been working on a trail that traverses the entire state from the ocean to the top of Clingman’s Dome.on the Tennesse line. I don’t.know.if its finished but that seems pretty cool.
JCPD-
Thanks. How are you this morning ?
Blake-
OK then. That’s the one you need to do. Report back WITH pics.
New Post: He’s Grand in the kitchen
OK MTU. Glad to be on my last two weeks at the job. Then a week off and go home for Thanksgiving and wait to hear where the new job will send me for 7 weeks training. I’m hoping for the Carolinas or Virginia that they mentioned. That would at least give me a reprieve from some of the winter.
JCPD-
That would be fantastic. Hook up with Blake or Al and do some hiking and photography, and send me the photos of course.
A temporary stay of execution would be good.
7 weeks is a long time. I’ve had to do that sort of thing. Least they could do is to send you somewhere nice.
