Cano in the running for his first Gold Glove

ap-robinson-cano-defense-vs-oriolesjpg-bc8b16f8193321cf_mediumIn the first award announcement of this offseason, the American League Gold Glove winners will be released today and Robinson Cano has to be considered a favorite to win his first.

I fully respect the defensive statistics even if I don’t fully understand them all the time, but with Cano the change in his fielding over the years has been absolutely visible. I remember watching him when he first came up in 2005 and he could make all the plays but just seemed to lack the edge and intensity that the Yankees wanted from him (Larry Bowa used to ride him all the time). Now, he still makes it look easy but the completeness of his game is apparent; he’s a true all-around star.

Is this the day he gets recognized for his fielding prowess? We’ll see. Other Yankees who could be in the mix include Brett Gardner and Chef Curtis Granderson.

River Ave Blues just posted a Blog Post about the possibility of a Choate/Yankee Reunion in ‘11. What do you guys think about using Choate as the primary Lefty Arm to accompany Boone Logan?

    —————————

I would be thrilled to bring Randy Choate back

Gold Glove is a joke – has been for years.

  4. I Like Inge November 9th, 2010 at 1:14 pm

Best second baseman in the game. Heck he’s a top five player.

  5. hardwired7 November 9th, 2010 at 1:14 pm

the word that comes to mind when I see Cano in the field is ‘preternatural’.

I think he’s on his way to being the best second baseman defensively since Roberto Alomar.

I can’t see him or anyone else overtaking Alomar, though. he set the bar way too high.

  6. pat November 9th, 2010 at 1:16 pm

“you follow Buehrle?s wife on facebook?”

No. They reported it on MLB Network.

  7. Mell November 9th, 2010 at 1:17 pm

I think Cano gets his today. Don’t see Granderson getting any consideration though. Gardner should get a very good look, but with Ichiro’s name on one already, it’s going to be tough. I think Crawford may end up seeing his 1st.

  8. Chip November 9th, 2010 at 1:18 pm

Cano doesn’t get the credit that a PEDroia gets because Cano makes it look effortless. He glides and is fluid whereas PEDroia seems like he’s putting in more effort – When things are going well a guy like Cano is called “natural” when they’re going poorly he gets called “lackadesical”

  9. Chip November 9th, 2010 at 1:19 pm

    Guesses:

    1b: Tex
    2b: Cano
    SS: Elvis
    3b: Longoria
    OF: Ichiro
    OF: Hunter
    OF: Hamilton
    C: Mauer

  10. Mell November 9th, 2010 at 1:20 pm

    Chip:

I’ll take Alexi Ramirez over Andrus and Crawford over Hamilton, but otherwise agree.

  11. Chip November 9th, 2010 at 1:22 pm

Let’s play a game – the “what if” game.

Now for the record I fully expect Jeter and Mo and Andy to come back – Jeter @ 4 years $80 mil, Mo @ 1yr $15 mil with an option, Andy @ 1yr 12 mil.

But what if none of them come back – how do you replace them?

    My choices

Trade for Arizona SS Stephen Drew
    Sign Raf Soriano to close
Sign Cliff Lee and go with a rotation of CC, Lee, Hughes, AJ, Nova

  12. Cashmoney November 9th, 2010 at 1:24 pm

That kid Starling Castro can surely pick it…

  13. blake November 9th, 2010 at 1:28 pm

    Hardwired,
He has a similar type flair to Alomar. Cano has a better arm but Alomar was just unbelievable at the position…..it will be a travesity if Robbie doesn’t pick up his first gold Rawlings this year.

  14. Dee November 9th, 2010 at 1:29 pm

    Joba for Starlin Castro!

Kidding. Just mocking some of the random “Trade Joba for” tweets that have taken over my Yankees Twitter search.

Just in case anyone had any doubt at all that CR9 and Eduardo are one and the same, he wanted to erase:

    “Eduardo November 9th, 2010 at 12:02 am

Wish an umpire or referee was the victim. Jeff Triplett, Bill McCreary, Ed Hochuli perhaps

    There you have it.

  16. bdog375 November 9th, 2010 at 1:31 pm

Cano seems to be a lock. Every single analyst all year long did nothing but praise his defense. Even the “analyst” Rick Sutcliffe

“it will be a travesity if Robbie doesn’t pick up his first gold Rawlings this year”

He probably will, but you do have to remember it’s a pretty uninformed voting body. Lot of Gold Gloves out there that are sitting on the wrong player’s mantle.

  18. kd November 9th, 2010 at 1:35 pm

gardner deserves a gold glove. it makes no sense, but his bat might stop him from getting one.

  19. NJ Pete November 9th, 2010 at 1:36 pm

Just took a look at the gold glove preview on MLB.com. I know nothing about these new stats but how can Cano have a negative UZR? If that is a meaninful stat, how can he be in the conversation?

Cano had better get his first Gold Glove today. :)

  22. BoJo November 9th, 2010 at 1:39 pm

Regarding the question on previous thread about Marte being off the books (I think Cashmoney asked it): If he is on DL, then insurance policy is likely paying his salary. Thus, more than half his $4M is off the books since he is expected after the ASB. If he doesn’t come back at all, then all of it is.

  23. hardwired7 November 9th, 2010 at 1:39 pm

  26. 108 stitches November 9th, 2010 at 1:40 pm

Few if any 2nd basemen have the strong arm Robby Cano has. The across the body / sidearm throws on the run are worth the price of admission. Each time is pure amazement.

  27. Wave Your Hat November 9th, 2010 at 1:41 pm

IMO, Cano has a strong arm and is excellent at turning the double play. However, his range, especially to his left, leaves a little to be desired.

I know that’s a minority opinion, at least around here.

  28. SAS November 9th, 2010 at 1:41 pm

  30. Mell November 9th, 2010 at 1:44 pm

“IMO, Cano has a strong arm and is excellent at turning the double play. However, his range, especially to his left, leaves a little to be desired”

Kinda agree. That’s one thing that separates him from Alomar, who was so ridiculously good going to his left, IMO.

  31. Chip November 9th, 2010 at 1:47 pm

Back to the last thread for a minute:

Rather than paying retail for Joakin Benoit this year I think Cashman should look at who could be the next Beniot – a guy the Yankees can invest little money in and bring to spring training with hopes of him bouncing back. I see a few candidates for this:

    On the free agent list:
    Rich Harden
    Jeremy Bonderman
    Fernando Nieve
    Micah Owings
    Chris Sampson

    Non-tender candidates:
    Joel Zumaya
    Jeremy Accardo
    Zach Duke
    Brandon McCarthy
    Chris Ray
    and
    Scott Olsen

  32. Chip November 9th, 2010 at 1:48 pm

Oh – and add Ben Sheets to the above list.

  33. Cashmoney November 9th, 2010 at 2:00 pm

Brandon McCarthy is an interesting name from the past. I recalled he had great stuff with TX. What’s his status. Was he injuried and still on the mend?

  34. Mell November 9th, 2010 at 2:05 pm

“Brandon McCarthy is an interesting name from the past. I recalled he had great stuff with TX. What’s his status. Was he injuried and still on the mend?”

Speaking of great stuff, the guy who traded John Danks for Brandon McCarthy must have been on some.

  35. FiretheUMPIRE November 9th, 2010 at 2:05 pm

I agree with Eduardo. I especially hate Triplett.

  36. blake November 9th, 2010 at 2:08 pm

    Wave,

I don’t really disagree with that. His glove side range is probably his biggest deficiency….I wouldn’t call it poor but its relatively average. His arm strength and ability to make plays up the midddle make up for it though…..that and the fact that the Yankees have a first baseman with good range.

  37. Chip November 9th, 2010 at 2:10 pm

Since no one seems to be posting anything I shall post a list of Trades That Make Sense in my Head Now, these are only the principles involved in the trade and don’t include any minor leaguers or cash considerations

    St. Louis gets: Zach Greinke
KC gets: Colby Rasmus and Jamie Garcia

Boston gets: Dan Uggla (moves him to 3b)
Florida gets: Jacoby Ellsbury and a prospect

Mets get: Matt Garza and Jason Bartlett
    TB Rays get: Jose Reyes

    Rangers get: Fausto Carmona
Indians get: David Murphy and Derek Holland

    Giants get: Jason Kubel
    Twins get: Jonathan Sanchez

    What’s up with that LoHud?

  39. Chip November 9th, 2010 at 2:12 pm

    Cashmoney -

McCarthy missed the 2010 season with a stress fracture in his pitching shoulder.

  40. Chip November 9th, 2010 at 2:14 pm

By the way – McCarthy shouldn’t be listed as a possible non-tender. He was outrighted off the Rangers’ 40 man roster – refused assignment to the minors and is now a free agent.

  41. blake November 9th, 2010 at 2:16 pm

    Chip,

If Lee signs with the Yanks…I think its possible that the Rangers go after Greinke as a plan B….

  42. Dee November 9th, 2010 at 2:19 pm

I wish Greinke would end up with the Nationals…NL team, far away from the AL East, and a probable non-contender- for now at least.

  43. Wave Your Hat November 9th, 2010 at 2:20 pm

    blake-

I’ve heard it said that Teixeira’s range makes up for Cano’s, but I’ve never understood it.

The way I see it, there’s never been a first baseman (positioned normally) who could field ground balls that the second baseman (again positioned normally) could make to his left.

    Am I missing something?

  44. LGY November 9th, 2010 at 2:21 pm

    Chip,

    3 lefties in the pen?

Are you trying to corner the market on 5 hour baseball games?

  45. Mell November 9th, 2010 at 2:21 pm

    Chip:

Only one that appears close to feasible is the Grenike one.

Uggla would never cut it on that Fenway Park infield. Plus his failure to accept 4/$48M from the Fish indicates a ridiculously self inflated value.

Why would Reyes work on a team looking to cut payroll? I can see them moving Garza for a young player either closer to MLB ready or in pre arb years. They’ll probably go w/ Brignac at SS when Bartlett’s number is up.

Why would the Rangers trade 4 years of Holland for one of Carmona (FA after 2011)…….and throw Murphy in the deal?

Sanchez/Kubel? Some logic there, except that it can’t be a guy like Kubel who has no shot at being successful playing the outfield in those big NL West parks. Only reason he wasn’t a full time DH for the Twins was because Morneau got hurt.

  46. Wave Your Hat November 9th, 2010 at 2:25 pm

The way I see it, I’d rather have a hitter on the bench like Marcus Thames than a second lefty in the pen.

If the Yanks sign Lee and Pettitte, and give Jeter $15MM+ AAV, that’s what it will come down to.

  47. LGY November 9th, 2010 at 2:26 pm

Carmona has club options in his contract for 2012, 13, and 14.

  48. blake November 9th, 2010 at 2:26 pm

    Wave,

Yea, I think over the course of a season that Teixera probably gets to a few balls and.flips to the pitcher that a 2B could potentially get to. Obviously a great first baseman isn’t going to make up for a poor 2B but that’s not the case with the Yankees. Cano has descent range to his left….its just not Alomar level.

  49. Chip November 9th, 2010 at 2:26 pm

    Blake -

I don’t think Texas has the ammo to get Greinke

    LGY –

I don’t care how long a game is so long as the Yankees win it.

    Mell -

Carmona’s current contract includes a series of options that go until 2014 at very reasonable numbers. If they lose Lee they’re going to need another front of the rotation starter to go with CJ Wilson…Carmona would fit that bill.

If the Rays lose Crawford they’re going to be looking for a table setter – Reyes would be great there plus he would be a great improvement at SS from Bartlett – attitude is an issue though.

Kubel won’t have a spot to play with the Twins next year – not if they decide to bring back Jim Thome. And I agree, he would probably be a mess in the OF but in San Fran he would have the wall to back him up.

  50. Jerkface November 9th, 2010 at 2:27 pm

I want the Yankees to retain Thames and sign Matsui. LH and RH DH, and both guys can sit for other players.

  51. Chip November 9th, 2010 at 2:28 pm

    Wave -

I think you can get both.

Marcus Thames cost the Yankees 800k; Randy Winn cost them 1.2 mil, they still had room to add the remainder of the contracts owed to Kerry Wood and Lance Berkman.

Again, if you’re talking about adding an additional 10 mil to the payroll that’s one thing, but I think anything under 5 mil is doable for Cash and Hal.

  52. Wave Your Hat November 9th, 2010 at 2:29 pm

    blake-

I agree that Cano doesn’t have bad range. The comment was made in a gold glove context.

  53. LGY November 9th, 2010 at 2:30 pm

    Chip,

3 LOOGYs in the bullpen is completely unnecessary and a poor use of resources.

If the Yankees sign Lee and Andy comes back, basically signing any reliever is a poor use or resources, unless they can get someone on the cheap without giving up a draft pick like Park last year.

  54. Chip November 9th, 2010 at 2:30 pm

Matsui is not coming back to the Yankees.

They have room on their bench for one all hit no field guy – not two.

The bench will have: Cervelli, Nunez, one bat (Thames) and a fourth OF (probably a veteran in the Scott Hairston mold)

  55. LGY November 9th, 2010 at 2:31 pm

Matsui is a better fit for this team than Thames.

  56. Chip November 9th, 2010 at 2:32 pm

    LGY -

I would argue that having Gaudin and Mitre in the pen last year was unnecessary and a poor use of resources – but it didn’t stop the Yankees from doing it.

If I can replace those two guys with two additional lefties when I know that the best teams in the American League have some great left handed bats (Ortiz, Mauer, Morneau, Hamilton to name a few) then I would much rather have them. Especially if the cost is similar.

  57. Jerkface November 9th, 2010 at 2:32 pm

Matsui hit .289 .394 .474 .868 vs RHP and they could bring him in and let Montero DH vs lefties.

  58. Wave Your Hat November 9th, 2010 at 2:32 pm

Thames salary will at least double next year.

  59. Mell November 9th, 2010 at 2:33 pm

“Carmona has club options in his contract for 2012, 13, and 14″

Thanks for the correction, LGY. My bad. Still not a deal I’d see Texas making.

  60. Chip November 9th, 2010 at 2:34 pm

    LGY -

    Re: Matsui vs. Thames

I disagree. Thames has shown an ability to play well off the bench. To come in cold and produce after long stretches of not playing. That’s not an easy thing for players to do. Matsui has never been asked to do it.

  61. Wave Your Hat November 9th, 2010 at 2:34 pm

jerkface, I don’t see Matsui coming back.

He will cost too much, and render redundant a part of what Posada/Montero would produce.

  62. Dee November 9th, 2010 at 2:35 pm

“The bench will have: Cervelli, Nunez, one bat (Thames) and a fourth OF (probably a veteran in the Scott Hairston mold)”

I would rather a veteran C depth rather than Cervelli, but knowing the Yankees obsession with Cervelli- you know he’ll be their guy. Also, I like Nunez and he is a very good option, however, I would like to see Laird, even though he does not have ML experience like Pena/Nunez.

  63. blake November 9th, 2010 at 2:36 pm

    Wave,

    Gotcha.

    Chip,

I think it depends on.who.else was involved and how willing.they were to move him. Texas has some good prospects…obviously if the Cardinals offered Rasmus then they would go that route but I think Texas has enough to get him under certain circumstances.

  64. Mell November 9th, 2010 at 2:36 pm

    Chip:

I think Carmona is a pretty good pitcher, but if he’s your #1 starter then you’re…..well, you’re the Indians. He’s not a #1 starter on a contending team, IMO.

  65. Chip November 9th, 2010 at 2:36 pm

    Jerkface -

They’re not going to call Montero up to play him only against lefties. When he’s up he’s going to play everyday.

  66. Chip November 9th, 2010 at 2:39 pm

    Dee -

I can’t see any catcher out there who is better than Cervelli agreeing to come to the Yankees knowing that he’s going to probably play 20 games (with Montero and Posada splitting the majority)

The Yankees will probably do what they did this year – which is sign a veteran to a minor league deal and stash him away in Scranton or Trenton if they need him – a guy like Wil Nieves, Rene Rivera, Dioneer Navarro – none of whom are better than what they have in Cervelli but could be called up in a pinch.

  67. LGY November 9th, 2010 at 2:40 pm

    Chip

You need those type of guys in the pen to eat up innings and even make spot starts.

2 lefties ok. Personally I don’t love having more than one LOOGY but I’m ok with 2. 3 though? That’s matchup insanity.

  68. FiretheUMPIRE November 9th, 2010 at 2:40 pm

Cano deserves the gold glove and the MVP too. If PEDdroia can get an MVP so can Cano. The voters are extremely BIASED against the Yankees though, so I’m not holding my breath.

  69. Chip November 9th, 2010 at 2:41 pm

    Mell -

    #1 – certainly not

But Texas was holding their own in the division before Lee got there with Wilson pretty much as the staff ace.

    I think a rotation of:

    Wilson
    Carmona
    Scott Feldman
    Tommy Hunter
    Colby Lewis

could at least get them back to the playoffs. Plus there’s the chance they move Neftali into the rotation.

  70. LGY November 9th, 2010 at 2:42 pm

The Yankees don’t need a RH bat with Montero there.

    When would Thames play?

  71. Chip November 9th, 2010 at 2:44 pm

    LGY -

You don’t need more than 1 long reliever – Yankees (in my pen configuration) get that from either Moseley or Nova (whichever)

In essence we’re talking about whether the 12th man on the pitching staff should be a lefty or a righty – it doesn’t really make that great a difference – the extra lefty though provides a little more insurance incase Logan or “lefty 2″ are hurt, tired or ineffective.

Again, it wouldn’t be an issue except the only other left handed relief pitcher the Yankees have above AA is Igawa and that’s unacceptable.

  72. LGY November 9th, 2010 at 2:44 pm

If you can get Kearns on the very cheap like he signed for last year I would make him the 4th OF

  73. Chip November 9th, 2010 at 2:45 pm

    LGY November 9th, 2010 at 2:42 pm
The Yankees don’t need a RH bat with Montero there.

    ———————–

Same times he played this year.

Or do you expect the Yankees to go through the 2011 season without an injury?

Or if they want to give Grandy or Gardner a day off against a tough lefty.

  74. LGY November 9th, 2010 at 2:48 pm

    Chip

The Yankees almost always roll with 2 guys who can give innings.

If you can get Kearns on the very cheap like he signed for last year I would make him the 4th OF

    ————————

That’s fine – I think he’s going to look for a situation where he will have more playing time than he did with the Yankees, but I have no issue with Kearns.

    Other guys in that mold:
    Scott Hairston
    Andruw Jones
    Reed Johnson
    Bill Hall

  76. Chip November 9th, 2010 at 2:51 pm

    LGY -

    Ok –

So then how about if the third lefty is also someone who can give innings – a Scott Olsen or Zach Duke maybe?

  78. Chip November 9th, 2010 at 2:55 pm

I think every team has enough to get Greinke under some circumstances.

He has said he wants to go to either the Twins or Cards (no way he goes to the Twins) and TLR and Pujols both want Rasmus gone.

That’s possible….that would give the Cards a nasty rotation.

  85. LGY November 9th, 2010 at 3:03 pm

    Chip,

The time Thames saw at DH this year will be largely covered by Montero and Posada. Because of Montero’s right handedness it would be nice to have a LH bat to step in and complement him.

The guys who give you innings don’t really matter if they are RH or LH, but I am not sure why the Yankees would feel compelled to go out and spend on a LH longman.

Oh and Thames was a disaster in the field. You can’t count on him to give Gardy and Grandy days off. They tried that last year and it didn’t work because he was so bad in the field.

  88. Chip November 9th, 2010 at 3:07 pm

    LGY -

Ok – so delete Thames, give me Andruw Jones and a good fielding 4th OF/PR like Greg Golson or Corey Patterson.

Point is – any of those guys make more sense in a bench role than Matsui who would be more expensive and less proven as a bench bat.

  89. Chip November 9th, 2010 at 3:08 pm

    Blake -

Not only does it give them a nasty rotation but it also gives them a fall back for when Carpenter is a free agent.

  90. Jerkface November 9th, 2010 at 3:10 pm

Andruw Jones is right handed. Matsui would not be a bench bat.

You’re talking about 80-100 games, with Posada/Montero/A-rod covering the rest of them.

  91. Jerkface November 9th, 2010 at 3:11 pm

I mean you are aware we need a full time DH. The DH spot isn’t going to fill 100 games by itself, and Posada isn’t done behind the plate.

  92. Jerkface November 9th, 2010 at 3:11 pm

    Matsui is a career .333 .432 .472 .904 hitter as pinch hitter.

  93. LGY November 9th, 2010 at 3:13 pm

Obviously cost matters alot, but between Matsui, Thome, and Branyan I think you could get one of them to fall to you on the cheap.

  94. Mell November 9th, 2010 at 3:13 pm

“Not only does it give them a nasty rotation but it also gives them a fall back for when Carpenter is a free agent”

One problem with trading Rasmus/Garcia for Greinke is that those are the type of guys (read: cheap, yet productive) that the Cards will need on the roster as they seek to re-up with Pujols.

  95. blake November 9th, 2010 at 3:13 pm

  106. blake November 9th, 2010 at 3:20 pm

It would be counter productive to bring Montero up and then platoon him. If he’s up then he’s playing either at Catcher or DH. Posada will get the other DH or catcher AB’s and then Jeter and Alex will also need some DH days as well…..just don’t see most of these guys being named willing to come to NY to sit most of the time.

  107. Jerkface November 9th, 2010 at 3:20 pm

Because he isn’t the primary DH he is the starting catcher.

  108. Jerkface November 9th, 2010 at 3:21 pm

Montero , if he breaks camp with the team, could catch 40 games and DH the 50-60 games vs left handers, thats 100 games for a rookie.

I’d still want Matsui on the team to DH.

  109. Jerkface November 9th, 2010 at 3:21 pm

I think its unrealistic to expect Montero to catch 100 games his first season.

    I see a split where it’s

Posada: 60 – 70 games at C/70-80 games at DH
Montero: 70 – 80 games at C/60-70 games at DH

If you don’t ask him to catch everyday I think Jorge will be healthy enough to play between 130 – 140 games.

  111. LGY November 9th, 2010 at 3:22 pm

Because of Posada’s age/injury problems and Montero’s inexperience/unproveness you need some insurance at the DH spot.

  112. Chip November 9th, 2010 at 3:23 pm

    Jerkface

I’m not expecting him to catch 100 games – I’m expecting him to catch between 70-80 games. That’s very reasonable.

  113. Jerkface November 9th, 2010 at 3:23 pm

Also this is all assuming Montero breaks camp with the team.

We have 2 positions we’re talking about

C 162 games needing to be filled
DH 140ish games needing to be filled

Posada 80 C, 40 DH (he played 120 games this year)
Montero 60 C (Posadas first season he caught 60 games), 40 DH
Matsui 60 DH? Might not play for 60 games, thome? branyan?

  114. LGY November 9th, 2010 at 3:23 pm

I don’t disagree – but you’re going to have some days where Alex, Tex or Swish DH too.

And also there are players who are role players specifically because they are veteran bench guys who can play semi-regularly and be productive…Andruw Jones, Eric Hinske…give me those guys on the bench and I’m fine with it.

You’re not going to bring in a Thome, Matsui, Giambi, Branyan to play a handful of games. And what’s more – I don’t think any of those guys would sign on for that kind of role.

  117. Jerkface November 9th, 2010 at 3:27 pm

    Thome only started 78 games

  118. Wave Your Hat November 9th, 2010 at 3:27 pm

Matsui made $6MM last year, and will make at least $3M or 4M this year.

If the Yanks sign Lee and Andy and sign Jeter for what they seem to be aiming at, there’s no room on the Yanks for a DH only guy making that much. Its a fantasy. You could sign him if you didn’t re-sign Andy and got a starter for 1/2 Andy’s price, but I don’t think iot is a good tradeoff.

Thames works, he probably won’t get more than $2MM, although he had a good year. Even better would be someone who could play the outfield too, but it’s unlikely the Yanks have room in the budget for a good fielding, good hitting 4th outfielder.

  119. Dee November 9th, 2010 at 3:28 pm

  120. Chip November 9th, 2010 at 3:28 pm

When Posada came up he caught so few games in part because Girardi was still able to play the position. Jorge is physically unable to catch more than a couple of days in a row. He’s got several nagging injuries and he’s older than Girardi was when Posada broke in.

  121. LGY November 9th, 2010 at 3:28 pm

  123. blake November 9th, 2010 at 3:29 pm

  125. Jerkface November 9th, 2010 at 3:31 pm

Posada hurt his foot in 2010, you have no idea if he is going to be as crippled in 2011 in terms of playing games in a row.

Even still, he could play 3 games in a row at catcher. So you catch Posada for 3, Montero for 2, Cervelli for 1 per week. Maybe Montero isn’t ready and then you’ve lost your DH/Catcher

It just doesn’t leave enough PAs for Matsui to be worth the amount he’ll have to be paid, whatever it is. If he’ll play for $2M sure, but it won’t happen.

Jeter had the lowest error rate and pretty good stats at short, so I can see where voters would find support for him. I had thought that, if any Yankees were to win a GG other than Cano, it would be Gardner, but having 3 infielders win GG is a great haul….

USA Today: The Boston Red Sox have shown interest in free agent outfielder Jayson Werth. The team contacted Werth’s agent, Scott Boras, according to ESPNBoston.com.

Werth could be a good fit. The Red Sox are in the market for a steady outfielder and power hitter.

Red Sox outfielders Mike Cameron and Jacoby Ellsbury combined to play just 66 games last year due to injuries. And J.D. Drew batted .255 with a .341 on-base percentage.

The Red Sox also may lose their top two run producers — Adrian Beltre and Victor Martinez — to free agency. Werth slugged 27 home runs and drove in 106 runs for the Philadelphia Phillies last season.

  172. BX33 November 9th, 2010 at 3:52 pm

  175. CountryClub November 9th, 2010 at 3:53 pm

The Neyer blog post is interesting. First he rips on Jeter, but then he goes on to write the following:

“I will happily admit that I don’t really get Teixeira. Maybe he’s one of those players you really do have to “see every day” to appreciate. The numbers that we’ve got for him are not impressive. I didn’t rank him among the 10 best first basemen in the majors, and neither did Peter Gammons. But Bill James had him No. 1, and so did Hal Richman.”

Isn’t that odd how different people’s views of the same player can be. 2 guys dont even vote for him and 2 others rank him 1st.

    Then there was this:

“At least Gutierrez and Crawford did play really well again this year. But this year’s Gutierrez is Brett Gardner, who played so brilliantly in left field that he probably should have gotten the Gold Glove that went to Crawford if the voters really wanted to reward a left fielder. And in all honesty, doesn’t everybody think that Gardner would make an excellent center fielder as well? And does anyone think the same about Crawford at this point? Crawford doesn’t play center field because the Rays think B.J. Upton is better. Gardner doesn’t play center field because the Yankees don’t want to mess with Curtis Granderson.”

So we cant just say he’s anti-yankee when he say’s that Gardner was brilliant.

We’re talking about opposing short stops making ONE HUNDRED MORE PLAYS than derek jeter and they only have what, 15 more errors????

How is Jeter making up for those 85 extra base hits?

  184. Wave Your Hat November 9th, 2010 at 3:58 pm

“How is Jeter making up for those 85 extra base hits?”

    He’s a Yankee you moron…

  185. FiretheUMPIRE November 9th, 2010 at 3:58 pm

Congrats to Jeter, Cano, Tex….and BOOHOO no Red Sox win a gold glove!!! How’s that for Theo’s run prevention plan!!!

  186. Jerkface November 9th, 2010 at 3:59 pm

And not all errors are created equally. A bobble that lets a runner reach is less harmful than a throw into the stands. An errant throw the 1B can’t scoop but keeps on the infield is less harmful, etc.

But all except maybe the throw into the stands are less bad for the team than a BASE HIT.

  187. blake November 9th, 2010 at 3:59 pm

Neyer seems to base all of his opinions on his interpretation of stat sheets….that’s why his opinion is among the most useless out there.

  188. LGY November 9th, 2010 at 3:59 pm

Jetes was not looked at nearly as sure handed as he is now until the Yankees signed Tex, and Jeter suddenly cut his errors in half.

  189. Nobody Is Perfect November 9th, 2010 at 4:00 pm

Neyer loses all credibility when he says that he doesn’t understand how Tex got a GG. Neyer needs to make an appointment at Lens Crafters because he needs new glasses.

  190. RhapsodyInBlue November 9th, 2010 at 4:00 pm

Jerkface I suggest you file a formal protest with Rawlings.

  191. Red Lobster November 9th, 2010 at 4:01 pm

    1. Jeter made the fewest errors from the SS position
    2. The guys who had better numbers were probably rookies and/or journeymen. You need to be somewhat of an established player to get a GG.

A guy like Elvis Andrews isin’t going to get the award until he does it for more than a yr.

Look at that play on the Kinsler pick-off in the playoffs… faked the throw to 1st and got Kinsler to stop so he could tag him. His insticts are the best from the position.

Elite Instincts + fewest errors = Gold Glove. Especially at a position without many deserving candidates.

  192. blake November 9th, 2010 at 4:01 pm

    Jerkface,

The combination of all aspects of playing SS is the most important aspect of playing SS.

    Does Neyer watch any games?

  194. tyanksfan36 November 9th, 2010 at 4:02 pm

    Kate
Apparently they are making him an outfielder so he will join my collection not as a catcher, sadly. I was talking to my friends husband about baseball and famous people on the way to a football game, he says he gets to know a lot of them, he played with Chein Ming Wang for a while, said he always took them out for dinner. It totally slipped my mind about strasburg and harper but when I looked at the ST schedule the Yanks are playing the Nats. My friend and I are going to go so she can see her hubby and I can see the Yankees, it then dawned on me that the top draft picks will be there as well. I asked my friend if her husband could get their autographs and he said though he wouldn’t normally ask he would for me.

  195. Red Lobster November 9th, 2010 at 4:02 pm

“Neyer loses all credibility when he says that he doesn’t understand how Tex got a GG.”

Based on metrics, Tex is not one of the best 1Bs in the league. His defense looks very good watching him, but the numbers suggest that he is not nearly as good as his reputation suggests.

  197. Mell November 9th, 2010 at 4:03 pm

“He’s the most sure handed SS in the AL and his lack of range is greatly overstated.”

No it’s not. Alexi Ramirez was involved in 200 more outs than Jeter. 200! No. His is .974. Jeter’s in .989. But on those extra 200 plays, Ramirez is still making ‘em 97.4% of the time. Jeter is making ‘em zero percent of the time.

  198. blake November 9th, 2010 at 4:03 pm

    LGY,

Is that because Teixera is so good or because Giambi was so bad?

  199. Nobody Is Perfect November 9th, 2010 at 4:03 pm

    “Does Neyer watch any games?”

He appears to watch all Yankee games with his eyes closed.

  200. Jerkface November 9th, 2010 at 4:03 pm

The combination of all aspects of playing SS is the most important aspect of playing SS.

Ok, but even considering that Jeter would not be the best SS. Or top 5.

just wondering, and not meaning to be snarky at all, who would you have chosen?

  202. LGY November 9th, 2010 at 4:05 pm

    blake,

I posted this the other night, but in Jeter’s career Giambi was only the 1B for two years.

He has played with a variety of 1B in his career (Tino, Doug M, Andy Phillips, etc.) and the errors were always very consistent until Tex.

  203. Nobody Is Perfect November 9th, 2010 at 4:05 pm

Is Jeter being penalized because more balls were hit to SS against the White Sox than the Yankees?

Red Lobster November 9th, 2010 at 4:01 pm

    good post

  205. Jerkface November 9th, 2010 at 4:06 pm

Also I have no problem with Jeter winning the gold glove, other than that it may increase his cost and I need the contract to be 3 years under 60 mil so I can get brownies.

As a yankee fan I want all yankees to win the gold glove so I can troll other teams fans.

We all realize that Jeter is not REALLY the gold glove SS, he just wins it on reputation and because he was a really good hitter in the past.

  206. Nobody Is Perfect November 9th, 2010 at 4:06 pm

“I posted this the other night, but in Jeter?s career Giambi was only the 1B for two years.

That was two years too many. Giambi was the worst Yankee 1B I’ve ever seen.

  207. Jerkface November 9th, 2010 at 4:07 pm

Is Jeter being penalized because more balls were hit to SS against the White Sox than the Yankees?

No because even if you took the same amount of balls in the SS zone for both players, Jeter would have converted less into outs. RZR.

  208. Nobody Is Perfect November 9th, 2010 at 4:07 pm

“We all realize that Jeter is not REALLY the gold glove SS, he just wins it on reputation and because he was a really good hitter in the past.”

Still waiting to hear who you would have given the award to.

  209. Jerkface November 9th, 2010 at 4:08 pm

just wondering, and not meaning to be snarky at all, who would you have chosen?

Alexi Ramirez, Pennington maybe. AL SS’s had no ‘sexy names’ and thus, Jeter wins the GG.

  210. pat November 9th, 2010 at 4:08 pm

BloggingBombers Wow. On baseball-reference.com, next to Jeter’s name with this year’s GG winners, it says, “We can’t believe it either” … Harsh.

  211. Nobody Is Perfect November 9th, 2010 at 4:09 pm

“No because even if you took the same amount of balls in the SS zone for both players, Jeter would have converted less into outs. RZR.”

And do we know if all of the balls took the same bounce, went in the same direction, etc to both Andus and Jeter? Of course not. You can’t base that on stats because every situation/hit ball is different.

  212. Jerkface November 9th, 2010 at 4:09 pm

    upstate kate,

Like Mell mentioned Ramirez was probably the best.

I thought Andrus would win because he was good and he has the popularity thing going for him that you need to win a GG.

I’m happy for Jetes though. I think it is pretty funny.

  214. Jerkface November 9th, 2010 at 4:10 pm

And do we know if all of the balls took the same bounce, went in the same direction, etc to both Andus and Jeter? Of course not. You can’t base that on stats because every situation/hit ball is different.

This is an argument, how can you prove that Jeter’s fielded balls were some how harder to field or whatever to then argue that it makes up for all the plays he didn’t make that other players did?

These fielding institutions watch video of every play, grade the difficulty, and then make their assessments. Its not like they read box scores.

  215. Nobody Is Perfect November 9th, 2010 at 4:11 pm

As long as Jeter is gorgeous, rich, the winner of 5 World Series rings and a Yankee, people are going to be rooting against him. It’s just the way of things.

  216. blake November 9th, 2010 at 4:11 pm

    LGY,

How many games did you watch Alexi play this year?

  217. Jerkface November 9th, 2010 at 4:11 pm

You have to make a number of leaps of logic to try to argue that Jeter making less plays is somehow a positive or that other SS’s made more plays on ‘easier’ balls than taking all the evidence that is presented against Jeter as being true.

  218. tyanksfan36 November 9th, 2010 at 4:12 pm

    Nobody is perfect

Neyer does watch Yankee games, but he apparently only pays attention the Jeter since he is an expert on how awful he is.

  219. blake November 9th, 2010 at 4:13 pm

You meant…..some.guy that’s never played baseball watches.the plays on tape and decides whether a play should be made.and the difficulty of it. Yea Im basing all my opinions off that information…

  220. Wave Your Hat November 9th, 2010 at 4:14 pm

In the Gold Glove world, the single best predictor of who wins is who won last year. It was Jeter vs a lot of relatively obscure players. I figured he was going to win.

  221. Dylan November 9th, 2010 at 4:14 pm

YES!!! Jeter wins the gold glove! Guess he isn’t a horrible defender huh? With all of the people bashing Jeter’s defense on this site, this makes me very happy.

  222. Jerkface November 9th, 2010 at 4:14 pm

.some.guy that’s never played baseball watches

This is not true. I happen to know one of the BIS play scorers and he is a former pitching prospect.

  223. CountryClub November 9th, 2010 at 4:14 pm

RiverAveBlues RT @iracane: There are not enough Gold Gloves in the world to make up for the egregious fact that Jeter has never won an MVP award

    November 9, 2010 at 3:53 pm

“Jeter may not have gotten to every ball but when he did he hardly made an error. I?d rather the guy get a single than advance to 2nd on an errant throw.”

That’s more a vote for Tex more than it is for Derek.

    ——

But don’t they usually give the error to the one that threw the ball, unless Tex bobbles or drops it, the one that threw it gets the error? I honestly don’t know.

  226. Benny Blanco November 9th, 2010 at 4:24 pm

Conrgrats to Robbie, Tex and jetes!
