“Always trying to make moves”

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Nov 18, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Just got back home and had a text from Brian Cashman waiting for me when I landed.

Before my flight, I had texted Cashman to ask whether the Juan Miranda trade was the small move he was talking about on Tuesday. His response:

“Always trying to make moves”

Fair enough, Cash. Fair enough.

Gotta love the inside view of conversations with Cashman.

  2. KPB November 18th, 2010 at 7:33 pm

Night Moves was a good song.

  3. DaSaint007 November 18th, 2010 at 7:34 pm

Cashman just never seems to shut up.

  4. Betsy November 18th, 2010 at 7:36 pm

Chad asked Cash a question; I’m not sure how I get that he never shuts up as it would have been rude not to respond.

I take his comment to mean that he’s always trying to make the team better, even if via small ways…….well, this trade doesn’t really do anything for the team now, but perhaps in the future.

  5. DaSaint007 November 18th, 2010 at 7:37 pm

Um, Betsy? I was being sarcastic.

  6. KPB November 18th, 2010 at 7:39 pm

    Betsy

I think DaSaint007 was being sarcastic, as in Cashman answering without giving an answer.

  7. KPB November 18th, 2010 at 7:40 pm

Sorry, I was posting while you posted.

  8. Betsy November 18th, 2010 at 7:41 pm

KPB, oh – I had no idea, lol

    Good news !

Lou Piniella has been invited and accepted the opportunity to be at Old Timers Day in 2011.

    http://newyorkpost.com/p/blogs.....uUsR8uCdTM

With a game on the line back in the 70′s, I always liked to see Captain Thurman or Sweet Lou with a bat in their hands, both being true contact hitters.
Not to say that Nettles, Chambliss, Rivers, or Roy White were slouches at bat but Munson and Piniella gave a confident feeling.
Lou is 1 of 3 former Yankees to hold the positions as a player, coach, manager, and GM at various times in their careers. The other two were “Stick” Michael and “The Major”, Ralph Houk.

  10. Irreverent Discourse November 18th, 2010 at 7:47 pm

Lou will be the first person thrown out of the Old Timer’ Game.

  11. Betsy November 18th, 2010 at 7:47 pm

108, that is good news! When Lou feels like returning to the sport, I wouldn’t mind it if we hired him as something of a consultant – there were rumors to that affect last year.

  12. Betsy November 18th, 2010 at 7:48 pm

LOL and he’ll be the only one booed – wait, it’s “lou’d” not booed.

  13. West Coast Yankee Fan November 18th, 2010 at 7:50 pm

Cashman and Towers getting their feet wet.

  14. KPB November 18th, 2010 at 7:50 pm

    Betsy

As long as it’s not lewd, I think we’ll be alright.

  15. Betsy November 18th, 2010 at 7:51 pm

LOL KPB – you never know at Yankee Stadium!

  16. jackamir November 18th, 2010 at 7:56 pm

Hot stove was much about nothing. This is the dullest off season I can remember. Just look at the Jeter signing and how much pub it is getting. Like he’s not going to sign. I have a better chance of getting hit by lightning than him not being at spring training. If we don’t get Lee I would be shocked. Even Nolan Ryan is conceding that Lee will be in pinstripes. They are into phase 2 and pursuing VMart and other options. Dullsville, USA.

  17. Triple Short of a Cycle November 18th, 2010 at 7:56 pm

The Yanks would be fools if they give Jeter a 4th year. 3 years at 15 a year is more then enough. If he leaves so be it

  18. Triple Short of a Cycle November 18th, 2010 at 7:58 pm

    jackamir,

all Nolan Ryan said is that the Yanks can offer more money. As far as dull goes people said the same thing last year. This isn’t fantasy baseball

  19. KPB November 18th, 2010 at 8:00 pm

    Betsy

How have you been? Did you enjoy your vacation?

  20. West Coast Yankee Fan November 18th, 2010 at 8:00 pm

jackamir – it just started. The world series ended 17 days ago and there was a 5 day no-deal period after that. So, we are effectively talking 12 days.

    KPB-

And to this day they are called “Mormon Crickets”.

    ———————————————————————————————————————-

Would Buddy Holly Brigham Young be a Mormon Cricket?

  22. GreenBeret7 November 18th, 2010 at 8:05 pm

For Cashman to make a statement like that, he was really spilling his guts. A regular chatter box.

  23. jackamir November 18th, 2010 at 8:05 pm

Last year there was a buzz about #27 and there was the Granderson trade and speculation on Damon & Matsui. I don’t think the Yanks are going to do anything on the trade market and rightfully so. Other then Lee; maybe a few tweaks……..

  24. Betsy November 18th, 2010 at 8:06 pm

KPB, I had a fantastic time………….I just love Boston; what’s not to love? My parents loved it, too, which I was happy about.

Last night I went to see the 25th anniversary of Les Miserables concert – on a movie screen. It was taped in London in October and shown in US movie theatres last night only – it was an incredible experience.e

    How are you feeling?

  25. Pat M. November 18th, 2010 at 8:06 pm

Triple Short of a Cycle….First, you must establish the differnce between Professional Pride and one’s personal ego…..Derek Jeter is a very Proud Professional ballplayer….One could make the arguement that he still remains the face of the game although that baton is being passed over to several……That being said, you do not say in the media, take this or leave it !!! You want to insult the one player that represents what the NY Yankees have become ???? So, I’m waiting for somebody from the NY Yankees to come out and say this crap that was reported by whatever idiot it might be ( and there’s many in NYC ) does not represent the spirit of these negoiations…….What is noteworthy is how the Jeter camp has remained well above the sewer level on all of this…….3 years 60 million and a 4th year option byout for the club

  26. GreenBeret7 November 18th, 2010 at 8:07 pm

God…I do love Ken Burns: Baseball so.

  27. Triple Short of a Cycle November 18th, 2010 at 8:07 pm

As soon as Cash comes on the radio I turn it off. He would make the worlds greatest politician

  28. joeman November 18th, 2010 at 8:08 pm

Joaquin Benoit to a three-year, $16.5 million contract…..you can say they over payed for a setup man

  29. Betsy November 18th, 2010 at 8:11 pm

Pat M, I wouldn’t say the exact words “take it or leave it” to Jeter, but at some point I’d have to make clear (if I’m the Yankees) that that’s what they mean. Jeter has to think about himself, and that’s fine, but the Yankees have to think about their team and their future. They can make it clear to him that they love him and value him, but that there is only so far they can go. If Jeter is insulted by that, that’s on him.

  30. Triple Short of a Cycle November 18th, 2010 at 8:12 pm

    Pat M,

I agree. You say all the right things you need to say in public for PR reasons. Behind closed doors is a different story. Now I could be way off base but I didn’t think for one second that Posada was going to go to the Mets over that extra year. he had too much invested here. If he did go oh well you could have signed a John Buck or Molina type player for half the money and years. Fans root for the laundry not the players. They moved on from Torre and they can move on from Jeter. Berra didn’t finish with them and neither did Ruth

  31. KPB November 18th, 2010 at 8:15 pm

    Betsy

Glad to hear you and the folks had a great time. I like to visit historic places. In a couple of weeks I’ll be going to the Myrtles Plantation.

I’m feeling well thanks for asking.

  32. GreenBeret7 November 18th, 2010 at 8:15 pm

    Can you spell nepotism?

•The Braves have named Jonathan Schuerholz, son of team president John Schuerholz, the manager of their Gulf Coast league affiliate, writes David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

  33. mick November 18th, 2010 at 8:15 pm

    Chad-

Is that a common practice amongst sportswriters?
I mean are there many reporters who have access to Cash, enough to text him?

  34. Betsy November 18th, 2010 at 8:16 pm

KPB, glad to hear you’re feeling well Where is the Myrtles Plantation?

  35. GreenBeret7 November 18th, 2010 at 8:18 pm

Players that have the respect that Jeter has is at least part of the reason that good players gravitate to the Yankees. Just ask Barry Larkin.

  36. DaSaint007 November 18th, 2010 at 8:19 pm

The Yankees offering 3 yrs/45M to Jeter is the start of a negotiation. I firmly believe they’d be happy if he accepts that, 3/60 or 4/60. I don’t think they will go a penny over 60M, irrespective of what his agent asks for or says.

  37. G. Love November 18th, 2010 at 8:19 pm

That Benoit contract is downright bizarre. I understand Detroit wanted to improve the pen but that guy was not worth a 3 year commitment at those dollars.

Strange things are afoot in baseball this off season. Uggla turns down 48 million and gets traded for spare parts. The Marlins sign the Catcher most teams with higher payrolls wanted to a 3 year deal. People actually are talking multi-year deals with Javy Vasquez. I won’t be shocked by anything.

If Upton gets dealt it pretty much throws conventional wisdom on how to build and rebuild a team out the window.

However, I do believe that Kevin Towers is using Upton to gauge what other organizations think of their players and prospects so he has a base of how to deal with other GM’s from here on in.

It’s actually quite brilliant to dangle this kind of player to gather info and then pull him back and still have all the knowledge of the other teams in the data bank.

If that’s his plot, it’s downright gangster.

  38. Triple Short of a Cycle November 18th, 2010 at 8:20 pm

I would be very weary of Upton. Between his shoulder issue and his strikeouts I would stay away

  39. Pat M. November 18th, 2010 at 8:23 pm

Triple….Just a sidenote, after Ruth , Berra & Torre left, Yankee Stadium was dark the next October….. ..Hope there’s a night show here tonight….No m & Nick in SF has caused for ratings to drop here at the LoHud….

  40. DaSaint007 November 18th, 2010 at 8:23 pm

Towers was always credited with being able to build a good, affordable pitching staff. But he was willing to make his first move by trading a young, seemingly pretty decent pitcher. Interesting.

Maybe Cashman is helping his pal drum up increased interest in this Upton marketing campaign….Later

  44. Triple Short of a Cycle November 18th, 2010 at 8:26 pm

If the Yanks aren’t able to land Lee do you see them making a big push for Darvish if he is posted after next year?

  45. Irreverent Discourse November 18th, 2010 at 8:26 pm

    G. Love – Is it really that odd that Uggla turned down that deal? He didn’t want to play for the Marlins anymore, who would?

  46. MTU November 18th, 2010 at 8:27 pm

    KPB-

I’ve been to Oak Alley. Ever been there ?

  47. Triple Short of a Cycle November 18th, 2010 at 8:29 pm

Uggla made a gross miscalculation. Nobody is giving him that 5th year. He will join the ranks of Nomar and Juan Gonzalez of the oh what could have been gang

  48. GreenBeret7 November 18th, 2010 at 8:29 pm

KPB, sea gulls like small fish, but will eat garbage or anything else. They’re like sea buzzards….scavangers. Not exactly a meal fit for kings or yankee fans.

  49. G. Love November 18th, 2010 at 8:31 pm

ID – I don’t see Uggla getting that kind of money from anyone else just yet. I think that’s why the trade offers were flimsy for him.

He’s going to have to have a monster season in Atlanta to get that kind of commitment.

By signing the deal he would have guaranteed himself almost 50 million bucks.

He goes out and gets hurt or has a poor year in ATL and he’ll be looking at half that amount.

  50. Jackson November 18th, 2010 at 8:32 pm

    MTU:

I just watched that short preview. This movie is going to be great. They talked about how Aaron reflected spiritually and emotionally while he was stuck, even recording himself as a way of dealing with being alone. Franco looks like he nailed it.

And your pics were pretty much spot on :) What a beautiful place, albeit potentially dangerous.

  54. MTU November 18th, 2010 at 8:39 pm

    Jackson-

I read the book. It’s called (appropriately) “Between a Rock and a Hard Place”.

I recommend it. If you do. You’ll realize 3 things about Aaron:

1 That he is an amzing guy.

2 That he had a “death wish”.

3 That he is luckier than heck.

I’ve lived the adventure just not fortunately not the tragedy.

And you’re right the scenery is amazing.

    Thanks for letting me know.

    ===========================================
There are many other casualties and it can’t be coincidental.
There seems to have been a concerted effort by many to avoid the Lohud.
I wonder if this would have happened if Pete were still around.

  56. Irreverent Discourse November 18th, 2010 at 8:40 pm

I’m not sure what you guys are talking about… Uggla is easily worth $10-$15million per season. He’s one of the best hitting 2B in the game (while on a terrible team).

He will collect the same contract or better than he turned down from the Marlins, with the added bonus of not being on the Marlins anymore.

I would trade a 5th year (which seems more and more like an outrageous demand to ensure they wouldn’t accept) for not playing in the armpit of baseball anymore.

  66. BIG AL November 18th, 2010 at 8:52 pm

    Mick -

Chad & Sam have been made aware by several of us, as to the numerous problems on this blog, and the standard reply is; We’re looking into it, or it has been past up to those above us.

I still have not seen any positive response to any of the complaints, and serious threats.

There seems to be a new element that prefers conflict to conversation, and that’s what is causing so many of us to either stay away, or limit our time here.

And no, I don’t think for one minute any of this would have been tolerated by Pete, although I was never a big fan of Pete, he did run a tight ship.

Air boat rides are awesome. A friend of mine had one and we used to have a blast. Of course he was kinda crazy, so I’m sure that added to the excitement. Luckily his parents had a little bit of money, because that boat was fixed or replaced several times.

Yeah. I’m sure. You’re really not supposed to be spinnin’ donuts in the middle of a swamp. And, shall we say, “indulging”. ;)

  73. KPB November 18th, 2010 at 9:11 pm

    MTU

Believe it or not, the only “indulgence” at the time was stupidity from 13-16 years old. But, we would do donuts and jump over things.
