Surgery for Aceves and Gardner

ph_458731ph_469686Just when Alfredo Aceves seemed to be coming back from his lower-back injury, he’s undergone surgery to repair a broken left clavicle, the result of a bicycle accident in Mexico.

Aceves had the surgery yesterday at New York-Presbyterian. It was performed by team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad. Aceves has been prescribed six weeks of rest and will need a total of three months for a full rehabilitation. At least it’s his left side, not his right.

Brett Gardner is also undergoing surgery. Gardner is scheduled for surgery next Tuesday, December 7, also at New York-Presbyterian. He’s undergoing a procedure for right wrist tendinitis — he’s had wrist trouble for a while — and is expected to be ready for the start of spring training.

That is not exactly enhancing Gardner’s trade value. In fact, I’d say that eliminates him.

  2. GreenBeret7 December 1st, 2010 at 3:58 pm

Get ready for the flood of “I don’t trust Gardner to be ready by ST and be in shape before mid-season. Sign Crawford IMMEDIATELY”, [psts that are sure to follow.

  3. start_wearing_pink December 1st, 2010 at 3:58 pm

Prior to today, I have been disgusted with Derek Jeter, or at least, his agent’s behavior.

Jeter wanted to be paid as one of the best shortstops in the game a decade ago. Now he wants to be paid as an icon. Ludicrous. He never once took less money to help the Yankees.

Jeter will resign with the Yankees at what the Yankees deem appropriate. Otherwise, Jeter will have valued himself above the Yankees. And no player is bigger than the New York Yankees.

However, even worse than Jeter is his personal trainer Jason Riley. I am good friends with Jason Riley, but I am disgusted with his comments that Jeter could play until he’s 43. By saying that, Riley is just trying to grow his own brand, “the Jason Riley brand.”

What Riley should say is: “I love Derek Jeter. Jeter is a great friend of mine and is a Hall of Famer. But at age 38, a player coming off his worst career season is likely in decline, unless he’s roided up like Barry Bonds. If I were the New York Yankees, I would give Jeter $10 million a year because that’s what he is worth at the most. Sorry Derek, you know I love ya, but that’s the truth.”

Here are two sets of numbers

    Batting 1st
    Batting 2nd
    Leading off an Inning

Top is Jeter, Bottom is Gardner. Jeter did not do well batting second this year, and you can’t bat Gardner leadoff without moving Jeter to 2.

Glad that GGBG should be good to go by spring training.

That’s too bad about Ace though. :(

  8. mick December 1st, 2010 at 4:03 pm

Brains are also a prerequisite for a successful ballplayer.

  9. GreenBeret7 December 1st, 2010 at 4:04 pm

As far as Aceves…at least it was the left and not the right. Still almost no pitching for the better part of a year. Hopefully, Santa Claus brings him a STATIONARY bike for Christmas.

  10. Jerkface December 1st, 2010 at 4:05 pm

If he walked more and got 150 hits and was more aggressive on the bases, that would be the improvement he needs. BTW, he just had surgery for wrist tendinitis, maybe that will help.

So you want him to become Barry Bonds?? He doesn’t need to walk more, his isolated discipline is already tops in the league. It’d be awesome if he did but I wouldn’t hold him to it.

As for 150 hits? He managed 142 in only 478 ABs. Give him the 700 plate appearances Jeter gets in the 1 hole and he will have 150 hits.

At least it was his non-throwing clavicle.

  13. mick December 1st, 2010 at 4:07 pm

Moving Jeter to second after this Winter’s myth breaking assault on the Capt. should be no problem.
Maybe they should drop him to the 7th spot in a platoon with Grandy for starters.

  14. austinmac December 1st, 2010 at 4:07 pm

    GB,

I know you were laughing about other folks saying we need to get Crawford now. I don’t say that, but I do say wrists can be tricky since there are so many tiny bones, as well as complex ligaments and tendons. Exhibit A is Nick Johnson. I do recognize the Johnson fragility factor. Let’s hope Gardner has better surgical results.

  15. Irreverent Discourse December 1st, 2010 at 4:07 pm

Gardner projects out for over 200 hits with jeter’s AB’s.

Hank “Fredo” Steinbrenner is making comments and predictions again. Good news for the other 29 teams.

I’m all for Jeter batting lower in the lineup.

    Bat Cano 3rd too.

  18. mick December 1st, 2010 at 4:10 pm

He had 132 hits, 100 singles. It is worth seeing if he can develop but if he stays the same they eventually let him go IMO.

  19. upstate kate December 1st, 2010 at 4:11 pm

so confusing…posts to the left, posts to the right…good thing we have Erin to keep track :)

  20. mick December 1st, 2010 at 4:12 pm

Cano will def bat 3rd. Tex 5th. This might wake Tex up in the spring.

  21. Irreverent Discourse December 1st, 2010 at 4:13 pm

mick – would you have “eventually let go” of ichiro under the same pretenses? He averages roughly 75% of his hits being singles as well.

  22. Irreverent Discourse December 1st, 2010 at 4:14 pm

teixeira being much more of a “power hitter” than cano will keep him batting 3rd, and robbie batting 5th. cano doesn’t need the protection. teixeira would get walked at a ridiculous rate with only jorge/granderson/swisher batting behind him.

  23. Carl December 1st, 2010 at 4:14 pm

So he’ll be back in May.

  24. Erin December 1st, 2010 at 4:14 pm

So, Sabathia, Posada, Aceves and Gardner all have had (or in Gardner’s case will have) surgery this off-season. Hopefully that’s it! lol

Mac, as big and strong as N. Johnson is, he has the weakest bones and tedons of anybody anywhere. That guy could pull a muscle taking a bath sitting down. Not only that, but, when he gets hurt, it’s not a twinge, it’s a 1-60 Day DL stay or surgery.

Not really that concerned about Gardner except that his “patience” is making me impatient. Swing at strikes, get on base and run early. The hand injuries though, unless they continue isn’t a real issue, yet. Really wish that runners would learn to slide feet first and not at all into first.

  28. Tom in N.J. December 1st, 2010 at 4:17 pm

Brett is good as long as he gets on base at a .360-.380 clip. I don’t care how he gets on-singles, doubles, triples, errors, walks, HBP, catcher’s Interference. It’s all the same.

  29. start_wearing_pink December 1st, 2010 at 4:17 pm

So I take it from the lack of responses that everyone agrees with me.

He had 132 hits, 100 singles. It is worth seeing if he can develop but if he stays the same they eventually let him go IMO.

As long as he on bases .380 and steals 40+ and plays the best defense in Center and LF, he will have a spot in baseball. I’m sorry you can’t see the value of someone who doesn’t make outs. Jeter never really hit for much power. I don’t know if you’re aware of this but the major league average for XBH% is 34% and Jeter’s career is at 26%. Gardner is at 24%.

  32. ET December 1st, 2010 at 4:18 pm

Aceves = the Nick Johnson of pitchers. Great when healthy. Never healthy.

Sadly, the same could be said for Marte

Need to beef up the pen…

  33. mick December 1st, 2010 at 4:19 pm

To even mention Gardner and Ichiro in the same breath is ludicrous. Ichiro doesn’t strike out and can hit for power. He is not just a singles hitter. Let Gardner have 1 season like Ichiro averages.

If Gardner stayed the same as he was now they would re-sign him unless another player blew them out of the water. Or he would sign for scott podsednik/juan pierre money with a team that values speed and defense.

To even mention Gardner and Ichiro in the same breath is ludicrous. Ichiro doesn’t strike out and can hit for power. He is not just a singles hitter. Let Gardner have 1 season like Ichiro averages.

Ichiro averages single digits home runs. His career XBH% is 19% His iso is only .100 on his career. Most of his SLG comes from the singles he hits.

Kinsler told ESPN Radio in Dallas he exchanged texts with Lee, and the free-agent lefty, expected to sign with either the Yankees or Rangers, said Texas reps were back at his house in Arkansas trying to persuade him to return to the team.

“Basically, I said, ‘What’s going on in Arkansas?’” Kinsler told the radio station. “He said, ‘The Rangers are down here again. I was like, ‘Well, just sign whatever they give you.’ He said, ‘Let’s see what happens. We have to wait it out.’”

“I said, ‘Remember, I like being your teammate,’” Kinsler said. “And he said, ‘I do, too, but we have to wait it out.’ I said, ‘Just sign it.’ And then he sent me a picture of a deer [that a friend had bagged on his property].”

A few more doubles would be nice, but Gardner has to cut back on the strikeouts. Knock 20 off of that total and just putting it in play would gove him another 6 or 7 hits, but, would move a lot more runners up. That and the waiting until late in counts to run are my only real issues with Gardner.

  41. Mell December 1st, 2010 at 4:23 pm

“If Gardner doesn’t show progression as a ballplayer they will not resign him as FA in 2015. Arb is 2012 what happens then?”

Gardner will be 32 in 2015.

This will be his only contract with the Yankees. Let him walk as his legs start to go. We get him through most of his prime.

  45. Irreverent Discourse December 1st, 2010 at 4:25 pm

Isn’t it easier to be patient first, and learn to be more aggressive later (i.e. swisher)?

  46. Jerkface December 1st, 2010 at 4:26 pm

Its fun that you guys just like make stuff up about what you think a player is, but lets look at the stats at least for things like striking out and hitting for power. There are rumors that Ichiro could be a better HR hitter, if he wanted to, but he’d sacrifice his average and he won’t do it.

As it stands he has hit double digit HRs only a handful of times. I saw Gardner take Mark Beurhle out of the stadium for grand slam in person. As far as I saw, Gardner can hit for power. An unfortunate hand injury killed his second half, he had to fight more pitches off and relied on walks.

  47. mick December 1st, 2010 at 4:26 pm

An “off” season for Gardner next season could be disastrous for him.
There is no “trend” with him and could lead to a platoon, which they wanted to do last year.
If not that he was cheap their patience could wear thin.

  53. mick December 1st, 2010 at 4:30 pm

Gardner doesn’t seem to be an “instinctual” ballplayer.
His speed overcompensates for everything he does.
Perhaps he is not a good hitter which is why he takes so many pitches.
He is not an instinctual baserunner or even a good baserunner, as a Jeter is.
He should have stolen 75 bases last season.

  54. GreenBeret7 December 1st, 2010 at 4:30 pm

It means that his property is big enough that he doesn’t need to worry about somebody shooting out his windows.

  55. Tom in N.J. December 1st, 2010 at 4:31 pm

GB, That’s true about Gardner. There’s a fine line between being patient and being passive.

  56. Jerkface December 1st, 2010 at 4:32 pm

An “off” season for Gardner next season could be disastrous for him.
There is no “trend” with him and could lead to a platoon, which they wanted to do last year.
If not that he was cheap their patience could wear thin.

An off season is disastrous for anyone without a gauranteed deal. Your perspective on Gardner is so out of whack. He was good in 09, improved in 2010, and has an entire minor league history to fall back on with his observed skills from yankee scouts, coaches, and managers.

Theres no point in saying , ‘if he wasn’t cheap’ because he is. Its part of his value. If Derek Jeter were cheap he’d be signed already.

  57. DaSaint007 December 1st, 2010 at 4:32 pm

Not having Aceves to stabilize the bullpen was a major factor last season, so hopefully he returns to form for 2011, as he’s capable of being used in long and short relief, as well as spot starts. LOL @ the Nick Johnson comparisons. Unfair, but funny.

Gardner should continue to improve. Hopefully he’ll continue to improve his pitch selectivity, gap power, and steals. Kid has a good future ahead of him.

I’d like to see more of Greg Golson, maybe as the 4th OF. Anyone follow him in the minors or have any comments on him?

  58. Jerkface December 1st, 2010 at 4:34 pm

Perhaps he is not a good hitter which is why he takes so many pitches.
He is not an instinctual baserunner or even a good baserunner, as a Jeter is.

Are you saying that Carl Crawford is not an instinctual baseball player? He takes so many pitches because he fouls them off. He led the league in foul balls.

  59. hardwired7 December 1st, 2010 at 4:34 pm

so Jamie Moyer still isn’t ready to call it a career after Tommy John surgery. that really is pretty amazing when you consider:

his first season in Major League Baseball was in 1986.

    1986!

  60. mick December 1st, 2010 at 4:34 pm

All I’m saying is that if he doesn’t improve, and he is indeed unproven, then he will eventually be platooned, which again they have tried in the past to do.

  61. Shame Spencer December 1st, 2010 at 4:36 pm

start – not at all!! But I think the Devs are starting to pick things up. We just need to get some of our guys back. We have back ups filling in for back ups! Kovys family just got to Jersey from what I understand though, so I’m hoping that helps him settle down.

All I’m saying is that if he doesn’t improve, and he is indeed unproven, then he will eventually be platooned, which again they have tried in the past to do.

Platooned how and for what reasons? Where is this logic coming from?

  63. Crawdaddy December 1st, 2010 at 4:37 pm

As far as Aceves, he still might be ready by April 1st. Until we find out the extent of the rehab, he still might be able to pitch with his right hand as he undergoes the rehab in February.

  64. Irreverent Discourse December 1st, 2010 at 4:37 pm

Gardner’s hesitance might have a lot to do with his role on the team. It’s tough to be agressive and risky when you could lose your job any day of the year.

I would expect his confidence to be higher this year than last, and his aggressiveness on the base-paths to reflect that. I do not, however, wish him to be more aggressive at the plate. Just swinging at more pitches, or swinging early is not going to help him become a better hitter. Continuing to be patient and learning to pick out the pitches he can hit is the only course of development for a slap-hitter. Blind aggression is not the answer.

  65. mick December 1st, 2010 at 4:37 pm

Moyer is gunning to be the 1st 50 year old ballplayer.

I’m amazed at some of the conclusions you all draw from watching baseball games. You all must hate almost every basestealer in the league. I understand a lot of guys attempted steals on the yankees, so you probably think guys are going all the time, but Gardner was right around all the top base stealers in SBA/SBO.

    Zero Chance Gruden to Miami

Who was it last night that said that Gruden to Miami was “this close”?

I did not think that Gruden would go to Miami. He got fired from the Bucs with a 3 year contract. This is Gruden’s 2nd year out of football. If he signed with Miami, he’d lose the 3rd year’s pay from the Glazers.

If he does go to Miami, I’d be very surprised.

  77. Jerkface December 1st, 2010 at 4:54 pm

And the gap between Gardner and other players can be easily explained. Gardner is on a high powered offense where there is a bigger risk to making an out. Gardner wants to steal at the most efficient rate possible to maintain the advantage of the yankee offense. You want to not make an out so guys like Cano, Arod, and Tex can get extra at bats.

And he was still top 5 in steals!

  78. Jerkface December 1st, 2010 at 4:59 pm

If enough people are saying he is not aggressive, are they all stupid or imagining things?

Imagining things. You all see his speed every day so you believe he can be more effective. At the same time you see other teams steal willy nilly on the Yankees. So you get this base running idea in your head and it grows. So then every time Gardner is on base not stealing it grates at you.

Despite that, if you looked at the numbers you’d see Gardner steals at the same clip as such base stealing luminaries as Carl Crawford.

For example, Gardner had 240 opportunities to steal a base. He stole 23.3% of the time. Carl Crawford had 261 opportunities to steal a base, he stole 21.8% of the time. Now if we signed Crawford, you all are going to be throwing bricks through your TV because the free agent the yankees just signed is being a wuss.

  79. LGY December 1st, 2010 at 5:00 pm

From time to time I’ve had elbow tendonitis, but never heard of surgery to correct it. On the web I found this: In extreme cases where tendonitis cannot be treated using any other method surgery is required. Surgery is only ever used as a last resort to treat tendonitis.

    Here’s another comment:
In my professional experience, getting surgery on the wrist tendons due to wrist tendonitis either:

    A. Doesn’t help at all, plus you have the pain and issues from having the surgery

    B. Helps for a short amount of time, but then the pain comes back.

I’m a big Gardner fan. This doesn’t sound good at all. I’m now concerned that he may never really recover from his wrist tendonitis. :(

The league average K rate in 2010 was 20.7%

    Gardner struck out 21.2%

    ———————————————————————————————————————-

Where does that rank for hitters with less than 500 at bats abd fewer than 35-40 extra base hits?

That’s what the real question being asked. If he plans on just standing on first, just let the hitter know so the batter isn’t in a hole all of the time. How many times has he been put in as a pinch runner, in a running situation and just stood there, or wait until 2 outs and 2 strikes. Girardi has discussed that situation on more than one occasion…heatedly and on camera.

He has until tonight to take the Miami offer.

The offer would make him the second highest paid CFB Coach behind Mack Brown at Texas.

The Tampa money is not offset if he takes a college job. Meaning, he gets that money in full and the Miam money doesn’t reduce the Tampa obligation.

To say I am surprised at Derek’s reactions to date, would be an understatement. It had been my sense that Derek’s pride would not permit him to do anything to embarrass himself, including playing well beyond his time at a level not befitting his station in Yankeedom. I therefore had concluded that he would propose (or accept) a moderate term of years at a “reasonable” level of compensation, which the Yankees would readily agree to; if he still were able to perform consistent with his HOF standards, that term could then be extended through realistic negotiations. Well, I was dead wrong, and then some. His false sense of pride and long-term resentment of certain others whom he felt had wronged him rose to the top to the exclusion of his many more positive attributes.

For probably the first time he is incurring considerable negative reaction from the majority of his fan base…..all of Yankeedom…..probably a shock to him as most, if the polls are accurate, have now concluded he does not walk on water, and that false pride, resentment, and a refusal to forgive and move forward may well be his more dominant characteristics. It is indeed sad. Hopefully, yesterday’s discussions were a rapprochement that will be lasting.

Not as many times as you think. I can think of one time, where even Gardner acknowledged it. At most, two? He stands on first just as much as Crawford. He has a constant green light, so maybe he is worried a guy like Jeter, who bats right after him, is going to swing wildly and put the ball in play and he doesn’t want to get doubled up.

Maybe Girardi should give more straight steal signs.

    Craw,

Yes. If it was “100% dead”, Gruden would have issued a statement. He has not.

He contacted the U in October about the job. Talks intensified after Shannon was fired.

All the vanilla “denials” aside, they have been talking non-stop since Sunday.

All of the major issues (his salary, assistants salaries, recruiting budgets, bowl bonuses, NFL and ESPN buyouts, etc) have been pretty much agreed upon.

Its at the point to where Gruden either accepts or rejects the gig.
