Yankees non-tender Aceves and Moseley

So much for that theory.

Not only did the Yankees non-tender Dustin Moseley, they also non-tendered Alfredo Aceves. Obviously no reasons were given, in fact, here’s the entire announcement from the Yankees:

Today the Yankees signed RHP Sergio Mitre to a one-year contract for 2011. Additionally, the Yankees did not tender contracts to RHPs Alfredo Aceves and Dustin Moseley.

    The bullpen is a mess.

  2. Rich in NJ December 2nd, 2010 at 8:03 pm

Moseley stinks; Aceves is real injury issues. It makes sense.

  3. Rich in NJ December 2nd, 2010 at 8:03 pm

    *has real*

  4. Betsy December 2nd, 2010 at 8:07 pm

I like Moseley……………..I like him better than Mitre. Aceves? I had questions about his back going into 2011………

I was out all day, so I just saw the info about Jeter………I would prefer the Yanks hold firm, but on the other hand, a couple of extra million is not a big deal to me. I’d rather give in for a couple of extra million then have the talks become even more acrimonious ……………as long as the Yankees do NOT give in on a 4th year. After all, it’s Hal’s $$ and if he’s willing to spend it, then why should I care?

“You posted his HR/OPS for each year, while ignoring his 2009 numbers in terms of OBP at a career high of .364, SB’s RC+, etc. as the sole argument, thus overrate HR/SLG over the above numbers.”

    ———————————

    No.

I posted those things to SOLELY in relation to his HR total, because that is what we were originally discussing.

I posted that to show that in 2006 he hit 18 HR, but then didn’t improve, so it is not a foregone conclusion he will improve on 19 last year.

  7. Bret The Hitman December 2nd, 2010 at 8:08 pm

    “is real” works too.

  8. GreenBeret7 December 2nd, 2010 at 8:08 pm

makes one wonder if Aceves injury was worse than thought and surgery/rehab did not/will not go as well as expected.

If that’s the case, it’s not likely that a team will waste a spot. If Moseley and Aceves don’t get an MLB offer, I’d think that both get MiLB contracts from the Yanks.

  9. Bret The Hitman December 2nd, 2010 at 8:09 pm

Hi Betsy, hope you had a good day.

  10. RS December 2nd, 2010 at 8:12 pm

It would be a shame if Aceves was never able to regain his 2009 form because of back injuries. He played such a huge role in the bullpen that year. I’m hoping the Yankees sign him to a MiLB contract and let him rehab.

  11. Joe from Long Island December 2nd, 2010 at 8:12 pm

Yeah, GB, I was wondering the same thing about Ace. It’s a shame, he was so good when he was healthy, and seemed a good guy. Hope he can make a comeback.

  12. Betsy December 2nd, 2010 at 8:18 pm

From the previous thread – that makes no sense. The Yankees want Lee done? That’s too bad as they are going to have to wait. Lee has yet to start accepting offers and he’s going to have a bunch of teams bidding for him. There is absolutely no guarantee that he comes here.e

Back to Jeter, I can’t help myself – my gut level reaction? The Yankees are caving…….big surprise.

  13. GreenBeret7 December 2nd, 2010 at 8:18 pm

Joe, the only thing i saw on Aceves’ injury was a broken left clavicle, but, something else could have been damaged and as far as I recall, Lieter talked about a pitcher needing both shoulders to be solid to get extension and be able to get behind the ball. If I remember, this is especially true with Aceves. He has the pitches but, not devastating stuff. Strictly a finesse type pitcher.

  14. LGY December 2nd, 2010 at 8:18 pm

“He’s a .300 hitter. Gardner is a playoff flop. I’ll take the contact hitter. Gardner tanked in the 2nd half. He’s totally exposed and completely irrelevant. Yanks will sign Crawford and you’ll like it.”

    —————————-

    Oh Hitman.

Carl Crawford hit .143/.143/.286 .429 OPS in the playoffs this year.

Carl Crawford was a playoff flop. He was totally exposed and completely irrelevant.

  15. yankee21 December 2nd, 2010 at 8:18 pm

Not really surprised at Ace not getting a deal. He was injured part of 2009, most of this year and now a bike accident during the off-season,, too bad for him. And good luck to a pitcher that also seems like a good guy.

A little surprised on Moseley, if anything, thought he’d be good depth for a trade package.. no big deal nonetheless.

  16. Betsy December 2nd, 2010 at 8:20 pm

    Hi Bret

    Thanks!

I did; I went to the city to see the King’s Speech and had lunch at my favorite restaurant……….It’s nice to take time off from work!

  17. GreenBeret7 December 2nd, 2010 at 8:22 pm

One thing they are doing is clearing out the pitchers from the bullpen that are duplicates. That either means, signings, trades or making room for the kids.

  18. Yogi Mantle December 2nd, 2010 at 8:26 pm

I can understand Moseley and Aceves not being given contracts. Aceves was very good for the Yankees, but he didn’t play last season due to injury of his back. It was rehab, re-injured, then he had to have surgery for his clavicle. Minor league deal is possible, but while I liked Aceves and Moseley’s contributions, I don’t think they did enough to warrant getting a contract.

BTW, did Wang do anything last season? I don’t recall hearing anything about him pitching last season.

  19. SAS December 2nd, 2010 at 8:30 pm

    GB,

Do you think Mosely and Aceves might get MiL contracts from the Yankees if no one wants them. I happen to like them both.

  20. GreenBeret7 December 2nd, 2010 at 8:33 pm

NYYs latest 40 man roster now includes 31 players, plus Aveves and Moseley

  21. GreenBeret7 December 2nd, 2010 at 8:35 pm

SAS, I’d almost bet on the Yanks offering them Minor league contracts and ST invites if they’re healthy and nobody picks them up.

  22. GreenBeret7 December 2nd, 2010 at 8:37 pm

Latest roster includes Aceves and Moseley.

    GB,

Who is that pitcher Garrison. I don’t ever remember you mentioning him, and since you are the King of the Minor Leagues, maybe you can enlighten me. Thanks

  24. Rich in NJ December 2nd, 2010 at 8:45 pm

If recent history is any guide, the Pirates could make Aceves and Moseley their top offseason targets.

  25. JoeyA December 2nd, 2010 at 8:47 pm

    June

That’s the earliest I worry about the bullpen with anyone not named Mariano. He’s the only piece that’s irreplaceable.

Bullpen and bench are two areas of the team Cashman has proven he is comfortable going into the season having a few questions.

Last year, our 8th inning guy didn’t come until July. Our longman was in constant flux.

  26. mick December 2nd, 2010 at 8:51 pm

Could be the Yanks are going for a few high profile relievers.

  27. mick December 2nd, 2010 at 8:53 pm

A 4th year whether or not guaranteed will be high on Jeter’s demand list. I hope he gets it.

  28. GreenBeret7 December 2nd, 2010 at 8:53 pm

SAS, Garrison is a left handed pitcher that the Yanks got on a waiver claim back in September from San Diego. Here’s his career.

  29. Rich in NJ December 2nd, 2010 at 8:54 pm

They likely don’t have the money for more than one, unless that backload Jeter and Lee’s contracts into the middle of the century.

  30. Yanks78 December 2nd, 2010 at 8:55 pm

When you have a budget, you can’t be wasting money on injury prone relievers like Aceves and dime-a-dozen swing men like Mosely.

Some MLB team will take a chance on them.

  31. mick December 2nd, 2010 at 8:55 pm

They likely don’t have the money for more than one
    ===================================
You know they have the money.

  32. GreenBeret7 December 2nd, 2010 at 8:56 pm

SAS, I’m not the King Of The Minor Leagues. The Squire Of Savannah, maybe. I just like looking what the Yanks have on the way up the ladder.

  33. Tank December 2nd, 2010 at 8:57 pm

Cashman was pretty specific in saying he wanted another lefty reliever… and I don’t think he meant a rehab/ST invite guy, he probably meant an established guy (Feliciano, Chote, etc.)

  34. ADam December 2nd, 2010 at 8:58 pm

Not a huge move at all, but personally preferred Mosley over Mitre. Mosley would have been younger and cheaper and he showed a little more last season… but again, literally talking about the 12th pitcher on the ML depth chart.. wont make or break anything…

  35. Rich in NJ December 2nd, 2010 at 8:59 pm

“You know they have the money.”

Not that they are willing to spend. They could probably spend $250m without breaking a sweat, but it’s clear that they don’t want to give more ammo to the proponents of a higher Yankee tax in the next CBA.

That’s why they are being prudent with Jeter and probably all new contracts.

  36. mick December 2nd, 2010 at 9:02 pm

scott downs and feliciano for the pen

  37. Jerkface December 2nd, 2010 at 9:03 pm

Are we living in a world where Carl Crawford doesn’t K 17% of the time and has a 10% infield hit rate?

  38. mick December 2nd, 2010 at 9:03 pm

    Nova will take Moseley’s spot.

  39. GreenBeret7 December 2nd, 2010 at 9:07 pm

Can’t see the Yanks giving up a 1st or 2nd round pick for a 35 year old bullpenner that’s going to want $6-7 mil a year for 3 years. Downs is already getting $4 mil

  40. SAS December 2nd, 2010 at 9:12 pm

    GB,

You are my King of the Minor Leagues then. Garrison went to a very fancy Prep School, but didn’t go on to college….strange.

  41. Wave Your Hat December 2nd, 2010 at 9:12 pm

    I don’t understand the Gardner-Crawford comparisons.

In the practically nil chance that the Yanks were to get Crawford, Granderson (my preference) or Swisher would be the one dealt, not Gardner.

thank you for the kind words, SAS. It’s something that I enjoy doing and getting to a lot of the Charleston games and quite a few of the Tampa games gives me some idea of what these kids can do. I’ve missed on quite a few, though over the years, like Fortenberry, Hilligoss, Ortiz and De La Rosa (though I still have hopes for him). Other than Russo, Nova and Curtis, none have made it to NY in the 4 years that I’ve been really watching the kids. Before that, I was never in country.

okajima non-tendered. worth a look? he sucked last year, but he could bounce back.

The balls in Derek’s court now…there’s no possible way anybody could criticize us for what we’ve offered. ………Hal

“The ball’s in Derek’s court now, and his agent,” Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner said later Thursday in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. “It’s up to them.”

“We don’t know how happy they are. We’ll see,” Steinbrenner continued. “There’s no possible way anybody could criticize us for what we’ve offered.”
