Lee decision might take a while longer

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Dec 10, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

At the airport yesterday, before I could ask Brian Cashman a single question, he asked me one.

“What do you think’s going to happen?”

Despite some earlier reports that a Cliff Lee decision might come this weekend, Bob Nightengale reported today that neither the Yankees nor the Rangers expect an answer from Lee for a few days.

That makes sense, and that was the feeling I got from the Cashman on Thursday. The offers are on the table, there are probably multiple offers from every team in the mix, and if Lee took his time getting to this point, why wouldn’t he take his time signing his name?

    I don’t see what is going to take so long at this point. It’s pretty clear now that it wasn’t about a chance to win, liking the city he’s in, liking the team/teammates, how the fans treated him or his wife….it was about the money. Now they know the max offers they’ll get, and all that’s left is to make a decision. Shouldn’t take days, imo.

    While I agree, are the NY goons any worse than the Philly goons or the Boston ones????? Not really. If Lee is playing here it is fairly irrlevant. The Goons are on your side, not theirs. I doubt a moral stand against a few fans will disuade them from $20 million dollars. If someone wants to give me $20 extra million to make up for a few curses and spit balls, count me in. Heck I?ll take $100 bucks?.. fire away

    Flip a coin Cliff.

    But make sure you pick tails for the Yanks. I hear it comes up 70%.

    Lee’s agent did exactly what he did 2 years ago….. he played ATL against NY…. got the max offers from both teams (80M & 82M) and then Burnett came to NY :(

  7. Phranchise December 10th, 2010 at 12:32 pm

    Days are to go over the contracts and different structures as well as to see if their are any other teams invloved. Ultimately they will need people to go thru the contracts and unearth tax implications, what payment structures create greater value. It’s not as straight forward as 140 for 7 or something, front loaded, back loaded contracts. He is signing a massive deal. Little details can mean millions of bucks. Why would he rush and make a mistake? Would you? The only ones that would feel better would be the people sweating your decision. It doesn’t sound like they are looking to play this longer to get more money or new offers.

    “You want me to say the Red Sox are the favorite?” Sabathia said. “I play for the Yankees. I always feel like we have a chance to win. If you look in our clubhouse and look at our lineup and the things we can do, it’s hard not to side with our team.”

    BryanHoch

    By the way, CC Sabathia repeats he will not opt out after 2011. “I’ll be here. That’s been from Day 1. My family is here, we moved here.”

    The Yankees have become CC’s team.

  14. Phranchise December 10th, 2010 at 12:39 pm

    AJ can be good for something, he can be Lee’s hunting buddy.

  15. BD (Boston Dave) December 10th, 2010 at 12:40 pm

    CC’s pitching isn’t the only asset he brings to the Yankees.

    He has been, by all accounts, a great teammate and a great Yankee.

    If Lee turns out to be anything like CC, it would be money well spent.

  16. GreenBeret7 December 10th, 2010 at 12:40 pm

    Chad, do you sense that since the money for Lee has been set aside in a “separate account” that Cashman is moving forward with other names unrelated to Lee and Pettitte?

  17. Erin December 10th, 2010 at 12:40 pm

    CC rocks. :)

  18. LGY December 10th, 2010 at 12:40 pm

    You also have to consider that neither team is going to tell one of these reporters they expect a decision today or tomorrow or something.

    Neither wants to send a message to Lee that they are rushing him.

    Them saying a few days is just another way of saying take your time Cliff.

  19. SteveB December 10th, 2010 at 12:44 pm

    OK, so what did you tell him, Chad?

  20. christina12 December 10th, 2010 at 12:45 pm

    I think the reason why Lee didnt decided yet its because of the incident with the fans and the treatment of Jeter by the Yankee management. Jeter told them that he doesnt want to play for another team and they told him to test the market in the media of all places. Also I think Maddux and the Rangers management told him stories about Steinbrenner

  21. raymagnetic December 10th, 2010 at 12:46 pm

    Yeah Chad, don’t leave us hanging like a nail ;)

  22. Chip December 10th, 2010 at 12:46 pm

    Keep your eyes on Baltimore

    The Orioles are offering a contract to Kevin Gregg…they already have Mike Gonzalez and Koji Uehara in the back of the pen so they’re looking good there.

    I expect improved performances from Markakis, Jones and Wieters, plus the additions of Hardy and Reynolds should make their lineup a little more dynamic.

    If they could get one veteran starter in there – either bring back Millwood or get a guy like that – they could put a lot of pressure on the AL East.

  23. ZMAN December 10th, 2010 at 12:47 pm

    I don’t understand why Lee would take less to play in Texas, although I’m really starting to wonder if the goons at the ALCS who thought it would be funny to taunt the players families and throw beer and expletives at them really have ruined this for us.

    If they take less money and you hear about “atmosphere” and things like that I hope the Yankees take a no tolerance policy on stupid beer muscled jerks at the ball park in the future.

    ———-

    It’s funny you mention that, G.Love. I do think a lot of the Rangers public comments/negotiating strategy is aimed more at the wife (lifestyle, home, etc.) to try and get on her good side so that she convinces Cliff to go there.

    OTOH, I do think the story from Lee’s wife is somewhat exaggerated. I have to believe the Yankees are smart enough to have ample security in the family section. I had a strange feeling after those comments… obviously, she leaked them for a purpose. And in that same article she ripped the Yankees fans, she talked about how much she loves the community in TX and likes how close it is to her family in Ark. And it was on the same day as game 1 of the WS too.

    Everything we’ve heard from Lee was that he was a $$ guy and would take 1 dollar more from the Nats over a winning team. Let’s hope that rings true.

    Christina,

    Then why didn’t Crawford consider the way Boston fans and their front office trashed the likes of Nomar, Roger Clemens, Wade Boggs, Manny Ramirez and Mike Lowell?

    Why didn’t he pay attention to how Red Sox Nation can turn on a player with a militancy unmatched in baseball, despite that players former contributions and dedication to the franchise?

    Money Christina…it all comes down to money.

    Phranchise,

    I don’t want to pay $175 million for 7 years, and don’t think they will anyway, but there are a couple of things you need to consider. First, there is zero state income tax in Texas, so even if the Yankees offered $20 million more than the Rangers, the net income would be roughly the same. The second thing to keep in mind is that if the Yankees sign Lee, they will still have their top prospects available to develop, or if necessary, trade during the season or the next offseason. If they don’t sign Lee then there’s a good chance they will make a big trade to land a front-line starter, who most likely wouldn’t be as good as Lee. This is important not only for 2011, but for the following years as well, as if Gardner doesn’t duplicate what he did last year, Granderson continues to hit .250 or less, and/or if Swisher continues to struggle in the playoffs, then they very well might need to make a trade for an Upton or another elite outfielder. Plus, losing Lee to Texas of course makes it likely that we will have to face Lee in the playoffs for years to come. So $175 million over 7 is crazy, but it just might be necessary.

    you guys are really putting a lot of faith in a kid who hasn’t ever had a cup of coffee in the majors (Montero)

    Look, I for one hope he comes up here and fits in right away like Posey did in San Francisco and Mauer did with the Twins – but the reality is that there’s an equal chance he struggles like Jarrod Saltalamaccia or Matt Wieters have.

    If that’s the case, I don’t want the Yankee catching options to be a 40-year old broken down Posada or Wet Noodle for a bat Cervelli – if I’m going to have a poor offensive catcher behind the plate (like Cervelli) I would at least want him to be able to throw a few guys out – that’s a dimension Martin brings – even if he doesn’t hit a lick – he’s a superior defensive catcher – probably the best the Yankees would have had since Girardi first came over.

  37. Mike Ri December 10th, 2010 at 12:55 pm

    I agree with Rich in NJ — I think Lee knows !! . . Maybe the wife is confusing him.. IDK

  38. Yogi Mantle December 10th, 2010 at 12:57 pm

    zman, there was also a report out from the Yankees that they talked about how they reviewed the tapes from that game, specifically looking for any incident that happened involving Lee’s wife. They couldn’t see where anything had happened.

    While anything is possible, there are moron fans in every city, it seems that whatever it was that she was talking about was far overblown. I would think that most NY fans who knew it was Lee’s wife, and knowing that Lee was going into FA, they wouldn’t be giving her any kind of hard time unless she was trash talking first.

    It was reported that the Rangers hadn’t actually given any formal offering prior to yesterday.

    I say we will know where Cliff Lee is playing only after ESPN lets him know when they have a free hour to devote. Lee played in Cleveland, too, right?

    Anyone got TV listings available?

  41. West Coast Yankee Fan December 10th, 2010 at 1:00 pm

    I heard a very interesting point on ESPN radio just now.

    That being Cliff Lee’s son is in remission from Leukemia and that a parent might not want to take him away from his friends and doctors. And that Cliff Lee will want his family with him.

  42. christina12 December 10th, 2010 at 1:00 pm

    SJ44,
    My boyfriend? You dont know anything about me. For the rest of the people. Didnt Lee’s wife said that the Yankee fans were very rude in the stands? As for Jeter. He was treated bad by the Yankees management. That is a fact.

  43. DocTodd December 10th, 2010 at 1:03 pm

    I wish the Yankees had a good option besides Lee…then they could just bow out and tell Lee and his agents to stick it where the sun don’t shine!!

    I am not really seeing how is that relevant. Lee has played for 3 different teams in the last 12 months. Whatever he decides will give his family long term stability, whether NY or TX

  47. Yogi Mantle December 10th, 2010 at 1:05 pm

    CharlotteYankeesFan,
    That is not really true regarding the taxes. The difference in taxes is there, but it isn’t as much as is being made out. Add to that he can live where he wants as his primary address, which will affect his taxes as well, it just doesn’t hold up.

    There also needs to be a look at how the pay is structured, more early on is a better situation than it being spread out.

    Add in whatever other financial moves Lee makes and the tax burden decreases as well. When you are making those kinds of dollars the accountants can do amazing things to help decrease what you pay.

    There is also a certain amount of status that comes with the higher paycheck.

  48. Yank1 December 10th, 2010 at 1:05 pm

    I see the problem now. The good news is, there’s a cure:

    1. Turn off the radio
    2. Bang your head against the wall to clear out the noise from ESPN Radio
    3. Go out and take a nice walk.

    The people from ESPN, MLB, etc…they’re all just guessing. There’s not a single one of them who knows what is going on.

    Here’s the proof of that:

    Before the deals happened who reported on Crawford being close with the Sox? Werth being close with the Nats? No one…the reason why…these people aren’t reporters, they are parrots – they don’t dig up stories, they report what they’re told and when they aren’t told anything they guess – just like the people on this blog.

    It’s a positive message to the rest of baseball and especially free agents when the team captain says he never wanted to play for another team.

    Each season, Kristen, Jaxon and his sister Maci, 7, spend the summer months with Cliff and return to Benton when school starts. Now, rather suddenly and unexpectedly, Cliff is a mere one-hour flight or 4 1/2-hour drive away.
    “It’s been a huge thing, totally, because we’ve never had it,” Kristen says. “We’ve never played close to home. It’s definitely nice.”

    A month into Cliff’s Rangers tenure, Kristen and the kids returned to Benton. But this time, when his team played a Sunday afternoon home game, Cliff had the convenience and team’s blessing to fly to Arkansas and stay until Tuesday morning.

    “He’d never been home [in Arkansas] one single time, ever, during the season,” Kristen says. “It’s saved me and the kids a lot of trips.”

    I went to 2 Dodgers/Yankee games last year and the comments towards Russel Martin make the Lohud game comments regarding Jeter with a man on first seem tame. No Dodger fan is going to miss him – and they don’t really have an alternative plan – that should tell you something.

  74. Yogi Mantle December 10th, 2010 at 1:19 pm

    christina, if you listen to the whole talk that Jeter made at the PC, you can’t 100% tell who he was angered by, but with all he said it seems he was ticked off most at the media and all the things they were spouting off about. Jeter didn’t like that any of the things were out in the media. His agent made his comments.

    The media was the source for saying what Jeter’s demands were, while Jeter said that was a lie.

    Meanwhile, the world got to see how the Red Sox treated their “C”aptain, which was a far worse manner than Jeter was treated.

    09:34 AM ET 11.21 | Derek Jeter’s agent Casey Close has said very little about his client’s negotiation with the Yankees so far and thought the Yankees would do the same. He was wrong about that. All of a sudden, the Yankees have a lot to say, especially through “sources” close to the front office. Close thought everybody wanted to handle this negotiation the right way, maybe because his client has done things the right way with the Yankees from the day he ran out to shortstop for good in 1996. He has both offers, very likely both *max* offers. One can only think about this stuff and talk about it with the family for so long…

    I can only imagine that Lee can’t decide what kind of team he wants to play for, or Lee wants to play for the Yankees but his wife/kids don’t want to move.

    One positive thing that the Yankees did was how they handled Mariano Rivera’s contract. Its nice to see that they got it done without any drama. So far the same thing applies to Lee’s situation. They handle it pretty well.

    Well there you go. There’s a good chance the wife doesn’t want to move, or has flat out refused to move. So Lee has to decide between playing for the team he wants, or spending more time with his family. Possibly. I can’t think of any other reason that would cause so much time to be taken when the offers are maxed.

  86. clownthrowindown December 10th, 2010 at 1:26 pm

    Lee’s wife on ending up in Texas…

    But guess what? The move they didn’t expect has in many ways been their most rewarding.

    “It’s amazing how things work,” she said. “You’re expected to win in New York. And in Texas, I feel like he’s getting the glory that he deserves. He doesn’t look for it, but I feel like he deserves a little bit of glory.

    “He works so hard and we’ve been through so much, on the field and off. It’s nice to see it come around full circle and know that everything happens for a reason.”

    If the money is remotely close, it s often the personal things that matter, as they should. Like Lee’s son who as mentioned previously is in remission from Leukemia.

    Benton, Arkansas is 295 air miles from Arlington. Lee could easily commute to work on a private jet, especially night games and keeping and in mind he only pitches every five days. This accommodation may be one of the perks they discussed- I doubt his teammates would object.

  110. coney1 December 10th, 2010 at 1:38 pm

    If the Yankees don’t land Lee, I’d rather they go after a few of the so-so veterans on the market like Brad Penny or Kevin Millwood then giving up some combo of Montero, Banuelos, Brackman, and Betances for a pitcher that is not an ace. Chances are they will have to settle for a Nolasco/Slowey type and I’m not giving up any of those guys for that. I don’t know why folks on here are quick to say Montero is out the door in a trade if the Yanks don’t get Lee. What starter that is available via trade is worth Montero? Unless King Felix, Price, Kershaw, Jimenez, Lincecum, or Josh Johnson is secretly available, I’m not trading Montero.

    The next few years may be rough with an inferior rotation and aging position players but there will be a quick revival if Banuelos, Montero and Betances work out. Other than Hughes and Chamberlain, they haven’t had two promising pitchers like the “B’s” in their system in a long time.

    Diamondbacks in the market for a backup catcher (from ESPN)

    Arizona general manager Kevin Towers is a major presence in this realm. Since the end of the season, Towers has acquired Zach Duke in a trade with Pittsburgh, sent Mark Reynolds to Baltimore for two young relievers, signed J.J. Putz to a two-year deal, picked up Geoff Blum and Melvin Mora and added veteran lefty Mike Hampton on a minor league contract. Meanwhile, all that speculation about a mega-deal involving Justin Upton amounted to a lot of smoke and no payoff.

    Next on the agenda for the Diamondbacks: A backup catcher and a right-handed bat off the bench. The Diamondbacks will consider Jorge Cantu and former Padre Xavier Nady, among others.

    Towers became adept at guerrilla warfare during his extended run as San Diego Padres general manager, so he’s in his comfort zone upgrading his roster incrementally, without a lot of flash.

    “We’ve always tried to identify guys where maybe there’s some risk attached to it,” Towers said. “I’m talking about guys who are looking for bounce-back years or coming off bad years. Or guys that might be hurt, and you’re hoping they’re healthy again. For maybe a third of the teams, I would say that’s the market in which we shop.”

    I think anyone can understand the Lee family’s position. It is very difficult to work away from one’s loved ones, and that can only be infinitely more difficult when one of their children is battling a life-threatening disease.

    I am a Yankee fan, but as someone who prioritizes family, and whose spouse was recently diagnosed with cancer, I can tell you that I know what decision I would make if I was in their position. And, I am sure it has very little to do with the buffoonery often displayed by fans ANYWHERE in the world at sporting events. NYC and Dallas probably have lots in common where that is concerned.

    I wish their family the best and hope their son lives a long, happy and healthy life.

  123. clownthrowindown December 10th, 2010 at 1:46 pm

    While its safe to assume that everyone knows there are world class facilities and resources in NY and that the quality of life – especially in spring and summer – is fantastic, Cashman should have enlisted some recruiting help to sell the Lees on it. Its one thing to hear it from your buddy, but it may have been more sustantial coming from outsiders.

    Maybe Cashman did, But it sounds like all he did was throw huge moneyr at them when he should have pulled out all the stops.

    My husband doesnt have a girlfriend. I would know it if he did. Even though anything is possible I doubt it very much. I used to work in a hotel years ago and there was a guy who was working there for years. He was married for about 3 years. Sometimes he had to work overnight. One night he had his wife there to stay for the night. I imagine she either was suspecting that he was cheating on her or she wanted to be with him. They went for a dinner in the restaurant and she went upstairs in her room. Ten minutes after she went to her room, he came to the service desk where another woman was waiting for him. He hugged and kissed her and they went upstairs to her room. I was shocked to say the least. I asked the girl who was working on the desk and she told me that was his girlfriend. Imagine that.

    Reading that article is enlightening. I am sure the Texas group read it too.

    Professionally, there is no question that Yankees are a better fit in every way, including financially. You’re talking Mike Mussina career numbers, with a better post-season resume, meaning borderling HOF if he comes to NY. Not the same with Texas, not even close. The union likely will pressure him a bit to take the biggest contract as well.

    Personally, it is a different story. Seeing the kids during home stands in April and May, as well as September and October, does mean something. Making your wife happy means something.

    I am sure that Cliff and Andy Pettitte have had a lot of conversations on these topics that are going unreported.

    And I bet Martin is not one of those moves he is not making, as some here seem to believe. In fact I believe he has made Martin an offer. Martin’s contract is not going to be a budget buster by any means.

    I still believe Wood lands a closer’s gig somewhere. Would be great to have him back for the 8th but I’m just not feeling it. Best of luck to him if he lands somewhere else. I always liked him and was genuinely disappointed when he (or rather the Cubs) blew his arm out.

    CC carried the team at a time when Andy was injured, Phil was approaching his innings limit, AJ and Javy were unravelling…how is that not an ace?

  151. Joe from Long Island December 10th, 2010 at 2:03 pm

    If Lee doesn’t sign with NY, it won’t be because of Cash recruitment efforts. It worked well enough with CC and Tex.

    If the story about Lee’s son having leukemia is true, then I wish him the best, obviously. It’s a horrible thing to go through. People do grow attached to their doctors. However, I can tell you that pediatric cancer therapies are highly protocolized, so one can get exactly the same treatment regimen anywhere in the country. And, NY does happen to have a few top-flight pediatric specialists. So, while there may well be some emotional things there, the nuts and bolts of treatment are the same.

    Again, as has been pointed out, Lee has been looking forward to being a FA for years. I have to think he has spent a lot of time thinking about every aspect of living everywhere. Now, it may come down to crunching every number every which way. And, that can take time. Why rush things now?

    Al – ridiculous to ask if I “support” someone. What is an election or an elitist club? It’s a open forum where anyone can express their opinions on baseball. People here throw this word troll around whenever they disagree with someone or have a conflict with them. Ruby Tuesday is a troll – he doesn’t give an opinion. I don’t think Christina fits that description.

    I said this before the 2008 season when we passed on Johan Santana (thank god): we can’t win it every year, try as we might.

    Better to make good business decisions and not get raked over the coals.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Touching story with a familiar ring like in Jason Varitek caught fooling around on his wife with Heidi Watney.
    No wonder why he plays for $2M this year with incentives of $300,000 to help pay for some alimony. He wears the “C” on his uniform as a reminder.
    Texas is minor league actions with fire works for home runs and using the antlers and other little league gestures til exhaustion. Just the way their FO has negotiated (or tried to, asking what Lee would take at the lowest to come there) is telling.
    Patrick,
    I have my reservations about this deal. I think they overpaid him both in years and dollars. I dont think he is worth 20 million. Maybe 17 or 18. But I understand why they did it. Like I said the crazy Nationals gave Werth all those years and money and the Red Sox had no choice but to give all that money. I’m also concerned that Agon if he doesnt have an agreement right now he will ask for more. If Crawford got 20 he may demand 25. Gonzalez is definetely worth that much.
    I love how Red Sox fans get two players and suddenly think its the huge difference and puts them way over the top on the Yankees.
    They pick up AGon and CC, both of whom are solid ballplayers, and yet their offense still is not as good as the Yankees.
    Every one of our infielders is better than every one of the Red Sox infielders excepting maybe a draw between Teix and AGon.
    Granderson is better than Elllsbury. Swisher is better than Drew. CC is obviously better than Gardner power wise but Gardner is about $19.5 million cheaper than CC.
    Mike RI,
    he is a decent guy, aside from a few obvious on-field occasions (ARod cheap shot comes to mind)
    he’s told me on several occasions that the Red Sox front office have, for all intents and purposes, treated him like crap.
    in context, this was over the summer where he wanted lots of money and the Sox correctly figured he couldn’t get it elsewhere so they offered him much less.
    but he didn’t have many kind words for them.
    several Red Sox, actually, have told me they’d play for the Yankees because the Sox management wasn’t treating them well (i.e. not paying them what they wanted when they wanted it)
    that said, I can’t necessarily argue with the Sox for treating it like a business.
    But the players themselves realize that the Sox front office can “be that way”
    I can only speak to the Red Sox circa 2004-2005.
    But I’d say of the 25 guys on the roster, maybe 2-3 of them weren’t regularly cheating on their wives (at least there was no proof).
    I doubt this is only an issue with the Sox.
    “We had a very productive meeting,” Greenberg said. “After everything that happened late Wednesday, especially the Carl Crawford signing, we felt the market dynamics had shifted and we needed to be proactive and aggressive to reach out to Cliff, Kristen and Darek Braunecker.
    “We proposed a menu of multiple offers, we restated how important it was to have them a part of the Rangers family and our commitment to winning a world championship. We talked about the lifestyle in Texas and how it worked for them.”
    “I think we made a very favorable impression,” Greenberg said. “What that amounts to, only they can decide. The competition has been very aggressive, and we wanted to reverse the tide and stay in the game. In doing so, we wanted to stay consistent with the franchise’s short-term and long-term goals. We did that, and now we wait.”
    Martin had such a strong season in 2008. Really looked like he was going to break out and be a year in and out all star type catcher. Even before the injury, his performance the past two years was very odd in it’s decline, both offensively and defensively.
    Really strange how he just seemed to deteriorate while still so young.
    He’s still far better than Cervelli. Just not the guy he looked like he was going to be.
    He is a guy that you could see rebounding a bit like Swisher did after that awful season in Chicago.
    NEW YORK—Following weeks of tense negotiations, the New York Yankees finally agreed Wednesday to a $51 million, three-year deal to bring back the team’s much-loved mascot Derek Jeter. “This decision was for the fans, because so many of them come to games just to look at Derek or take pictures with him,” Yankees GM Brian Cashman told reporters, adding that the mascot’s presence alone is enough to boost team morale. “With his goofy smile and antics on the field, he makes Yankee Stadium a family experience. Kids just love the hilarious way he swings and misses at pitches and struggles to cover ground at shortstop.” Cashman hinted that Derek Jeter would have an updated appearance this season, with an improved, slightly balder look
    Thank you start wearing pink. Its just that I enjoy the conversation here and that is the reason I come here no to troll or to tease anybody.
    Why not just trade Montero and Chamberlain to KC for Greinke? Chamberlain isn’t even talked about anymore so why not trade him. Save tons of money still have your young pitchers. Sign Russell Martin and bridge it over until Sanchez is ready. Worse thing that happens is Greinke goes belly up next season. Seven years of Cliff Lee is alot more dangerous. He already has had back problems.
  223. Patrick December 10th, 2010 at 2:57 pm
    Hahaha that’s harsh Jerkface
  224. Patrick December 10th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
    wernerman,
    I’d sign Lee to a 7 year deal if my alternative is trading Joba/Montero for Greinke.
  225. BJK December 10th, 2010 at 2:59 pm
    Jerkface-
    Is that from The Onion?
  226. Howe Farr December 10th, 2010 at 2:59 pm
    jerkface,
    what if cliff lee’s wife reads that? what will she think?!
  227. mick December 10th, 2010 at 3:01 pm
    pat m
    would you agree there is no room for martin and cervelli?
    why was that deal for them squashed?
    wouldn’t martin cut into montero p/t?
  228. Erin December 10th, 2010 at 3:01 pm
    Jerkface-is that from the Onion?
    Hilarious, BTW.
  229. mick December 10th, 2010 at 3:01 pm
    I think Lee and his wife are reading this blog as we speak, watch what you say.
  230. Erin December 10th, 2010 at 3:02 pm
    BloggingBombers Gardner-Jeter-Teix-ARod-Cano-Swish-Grandy-Posada-Montero not bad either RT @ch029448 Sox batting order 1-6 is RIDICULOUSLY scary! Holy cow!
    BloggingBombers If I’m making out the Yankees’ lineup, Gardner is my leadoff hitter. Led the Yankees in OBP last year. Can score 120 runs & steal 50-60 bags
    “Greenberg did not go into the terms of the contract proposals. He said the economics of the proposals were complicated.”
    Complicated? Either you ponied up the cash or you didn’t Greenberg.
    ******************
    It is very common to be creative when you are trying to make a big dollar contract work, we do it all the time. I think that may be why the billionaire pipeline partner, his name escapes me, attended the meeting yesterday. There are many ways to define and contribute value to a deal other than writing a check.
  232. upstate kate December 10th, 2010 at 3:02 pm
    Jerkface’s Jeter jab of the day :)
  233. mick December 10th, 2010 at 3:02 pm
    If they don’t get Lee, it looks like Montero is a goner. That would be a crime.
  234. mick December 10th, 2010 at 3:05 pm
    JFace
    Why don’t you think Jeter can bounce back?
    Do you know for a fact that he wasn’t hurt last year?
  235. Wave Your Hat December 10th, 2010 at 3:07 pm
    If Montero can actually catch adequately at the major league level, there is no pitcher on the market I would trade him for.
    The problem is, I don’t know – none of us do – if Montero can catch adequately at the major league level. At this point I think you have to defer to the Yankee’s judgment.
  236. CB December 10th, 2010 at 3:07 pm
    Wave-
    Martin’s first couple of season he was very athletic and quick behind the plate. It’s anecdotal – but he hasn’t looked as active the past couple of season.
    Pat M would have a better sense of this than me. But that’s how it’s struck me. And people in LA have commented on how his defense has also taken a step back.
    If no one talks about Joba anymore, why would KC want him?
    No one talks about Kei Igawa either. Can we send him too?
  238. Tom K December 10th, 2010 at 3:09 pm
    The Royals haven’t approached other clubs about possible Zack Greinke trades, according to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star (on Twitter)
    Huh…?
  239. CB December 10th, 2010 at 3:09 pm
    Wave-
    I should also say on Martin’s defense – he did look injured and hampered physically and I thought that was the likely reason why he didn’t look as quick and agile behind the plate.
  240. Wave Your Hat December 10th, 2010 at 3:09 pm
    CB-
    Fair enough. But Martin did throw out a career high 39% of runners last year. That’s impressive.
  241. RMS December 10th, 2010 at 3:11 pm
    Hey, Cliff Lee, how long does it take to make a decision? Pick a team, dammit.
    Do you want an opt out clause like CC?
  242. BJK December 10th, 2010 at 3:12 pm
    “With his goofy smile and antics on the field, he makes Yankee Stadium a family experience. Kids just love the hilarious way he swings and misses at pitches and struggles to cover ground at shortstop.”
    ——————————–
    This is obviously a fake article. If it were real, the quote would be about the way he hilariously grounds out to SS.
  243. Wave Your Hat December 10th, 2010 at 3:12 pm
    KC is probably looking for middle infielders/outfielders prospects back in a Greinke deal. I don’t think the Yanks are sufficiently competitive in that area to swing a Greinke deal even if the Yanks were inclined to try to get him.
    Wave-
    This was something I remember on Martin from the season before last:
    A scout’s take on Martin from 2009:
    “Dodgers catcher Russell Martin: “You talk about a young player growing old before our very eyes. His bat is slowing down, and he’s not moving very well behind the plate. I don’t know what’s wrong with him.””
    https://baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=9073
  246. Pat M. December 10th, 2010 at 3:21 pm
    CB…You hit it on Martin….He’s quickness was lost , in fact Joe Torre tried to do what worked for him, go play 3rd base ( not good there ) …..His back looked slow because his legs and hips slowed down….Bottom line he played too long being injured…..Is it Jerkface or Jerkoff ???? As I put out there yesterday, I’ll bet you on Jeter’s 2011 season….You pay me $ 2.00 dollars on every % point above .270 & I’ll pay you #.00 dollars on every point below last season’s ,270
  247. Wave Your Hat December 10th, 2010 at 3:28 pm
    “& I’ll pay you #.00 dollars on every point below last season’s ,270″
    See, this is probably why you are dangerous to bet against.
  248. Doreen December 10th, 2010 at 3:29 pm
    Then, if Martin is declining both offensively AND defensively, and Boston would give him more playing time, I say, I hope he goest to Boston.
  249. mick December 10th, 2010 at 3:32 pm
    “goest”
    is that a derivative of ghost?
  250. wernerman December 10th, 2010 at 3:40 pm
    Well if the Yankees don’t have the prospects to get Greinke, they are out of luck if Cliff Hanger decides to go to Texas. That is reality. Something most of the people don’t even want to think about around here. I was a Yankee fan during the years when they were losing, I hope all you people will stick with them next season if things don’t work out.
