Today’s story, same as Friday’s story

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Dec 12, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

As expected, there’s nothing significant happening with the Cliff Lee story this afternoon. I was told this afternoon that the Yankees had not heard anything, and quite a few beat writers seem to have been told the exact same thing.

George King reports that the Yankees have spoken to Lee since Thursday, but they don’t plan to increase their offer(s).

Jon Heyman says Lee is still expected to choose either the Yankees or Rangers, but there are “strong signs” that a third team is involved. The Angels just lost out on Carl Crawford, so it could be them.

@SI_JonHeyman mystery team is Nats but money falls far short of Yanks top offer. #CliffLee #Yankees #Rangers #Nationals #BSrumor

Braunecker has done a fantastic job, but there really was the perfect storm of events for him. Literally everything broke his way to maximize Lee’s contract.

Mauer signs an extension, Halladay signs that stupid extension, Lee gets traded to Texas instead of NY at the last minute, the Texas ownership gets settled, and Werth gets an outrageous deal that completely shifts the market.

  4. Bronx Jeers December 12th, 2010 at 5:43 pm

Braunecker will be a household name?

When the sink is clogged up we’ll use a “braunecker” to unclog it.

I think this should be over soon. Everyone knows where everyone is. Yankees beat Texas and Nats offers, and Cliff Lee is going for the money. Yankees aren’t going higher.

    End it already.

  9. Mike Ri December 12th, 2010 at 5:49 pm

Come on Nationals stop prolonging the decision !!!! ughhhhhhhh

  11. RhapsodyInBlue December 12th, 2010 at 5:51 pm

Braunecker to me would be a short bout of flatulence, relief from gas cramps.

  12. BD (Boston Dave) December 12th, 2010 at 5:54 pm

is Tampa a much weaker team this year?

they will add a DH who should easily replace what they got from Carlos Pena last season.

David Price is only going to get better and they’ll be adding Hellickson plus another year of experience for Davis. Maybe Jake McGee plays a role too.

Garza is a candidate to improve from a weak 2010.

Losing Crawford hurts. It’s up to Desmond Jennings to make it not hurt too bad.

Losing Soriano is probably the biggest loss on the team. If they don’t sign a replacement, it’s a big issue.

Otherwise, I wouldn’t count Tampa out by a longshot. That starting rotation could still lead them to the playoffs if the Yankees or Sox don’t get the job done.

The Rays are weaker, but maybe not “much” weaker when all is said and done.

I see plenty of people assuming they have zero chance. I don’t agree.

  13. DocTodd December 12th, 2010 at 5:55 pm

Braunecker is from Arkansas I believe….couldn’t make it as a player, so did the next best thing….that’s how he ended up with the Arkasas boys AJ and Lee

  14. Rich in NJ December 12th, 2010 at 5:58 pm

Actually, the mystery is the franchise that Lee will be buying with the contract he is about to sign.

  15. RhapsodyInBlue December 12th, 2010 at 5:58 pm

Plus Braunecker is a household name in Arkansas.

  16. West Coast Yankee Fan December 12th, 2010 at 5:59 pm

The Rays lost Benoit too who last year was the best setup man in baseball probably.

I pluged the Yankees linup into a line-up simulator. I used the Bill James projections to fill in the data:

  18. GreenBeret7 December 12th, 2010 at 6:02 pm

I can’t see the “Magic yeam” being the angels. They have a rotation. They need at the very least, a 3rd baseman. They also need a DH and/or a corner outfielder.

As far as starting the season with Noesi in the rotation over Nova, I’d think prpbably not. Noesi has better stuff than than Nova, but, he’s not quite ready yet. Perhaps by the AS Break. Same with Mitchell/Phelps. I wouldn’t bring Banuelos up this year at all, regardless of how he does.

  19. LGY December 12th, 2010 at 6:03 pm

Ryan said six years is past his “comfort zone.”

“When they [the Yankees] went to seven years, that surprised me,” Ryan said. “But you don’t know the details of that offer. All you’d be doing is speculating.”

  20. GreenBeret7 December 12th, 2010 at 6:04 pm

    Braunnecker is also Moseley’s agent.

  21. GreenBeret7 December 12th, 2010 at 6:04 pm

I can’t see the “Magic ***team”***

  22. LGY December 12th, 2010 at 6:06 pm

“I have no insight into when he’ll do that,” said Ryan on Sunday afternoon. “I don’t have a feel for it one way or the other. We’ll just have to see.”

Ryan said Lee has a lot to sort through and expected that it would take the free-agent left-handed pitcher some time. And Ryan, who made two of the three trips the Rangers made to Little Rock, Ark., to try to woo Lee, is trying not to worry about it.

“If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be,” Ryan said. “If he doesn’t come, we’ll keep working to improve our team headed into spring training next year.”

  23. Carlo December 12th, 2010 at 6:06 pm

Bartlett is also out of the mix for the 2011 rays. Their fixes aren’t as simple as outlined below. I wouldn’t consider writing them off, but they have an uphill climb with a lot of questionmarks.

  24. Yogi Mantle December 12th, 2010 at 6:07 pm

I think its way too early to predict how the newly configured Rays team will be. They lost some of their core players, and that will have its affect on their team, but they have a lot of talent in the farm coming up.

The East has the Blue Jays being a beast offense wise, though I’m not sure if that will keep up. That all depends on the Canadian Healthcare system.

The Orioles may not be back, but they were playing tough and they made some decent additions. They won’t be a punching bag anymore.

The Saux are as usual, and its tough to say how well their pitching will be, but their lineup is going to be tough to face.

I’m not really sure how to rank any of these teams this year. I wouldn’t be shocked to see the O’s take a step forward. Rays may suffer going down just because of all the other teams in the East being so tough.

  25. DocTodd December 12th, 2010 at 6:08 pm

what’s so hard about choosing NY….play with a great friend CC,forming an awesome 1-2 punch, get the highest offer, play for the most storied franchise in All of sports in an awesome facility….plus he can go back to Arkansas during the Winter…

  26. randy l. December 12th, 2010 at 6:09 pm

“So if you want to go into the season thinking tampa takes a step back and the wild card remains a good shot you have to do so by acknowledging that you are going to be absorbing significant risk of missing the playoffs.”

    cb-

i think the yankees took more of a risk in 2008 by going with hughes and kennedy at the same time.i said that was crazy at the time and had said that the yankees should have added livan hernandez that winter as the 4-5 guy to go with just one of the rookies.

unless there is something wrong with joba physically that makes starting a bad idea that the yankees may know and we don’t., i don’t see why sending him back out there is a big risk. he’s not a rookie. he’s started a lot of games.

i guess then it would get down too if pettitte wants to pitch this year. if he does the yankees would have a rotation good enough to start the year.

even though there is a lot of cash in the game, there will be teams trying to get rid of salary as mid season approaches. if the yankees don’t spend 25 million on lee they’d have a ton of cash to use.

it is not a given that the red sox will jell. they have done little to nothing with their pitching staff. what if they go backwards. no matter what their offense does , if they are in the last third of the league in pitching they may have to scuffle for a wild card spot themselves. farrel was a very good pitching coach. he worked with lester really closely. lester may miss him.

i’m just saying the yankees have options to lee, and i think they should seriously look at them because i do not have a good feeling about lee for the next 7 years.

  27. Carlo December 12th, 2010 at 6:10 pm

Early prediction – Blue Jays meaningfully underperform expectations in 2011. Offense nosedives.

  28. DocTodd December 12th, 2010 at 6:10 pm

The Angels did not step up and grab Crawford, who they supposedly loved..can’t see them getting in a bidding war for Lee…plus it’s even further away from Arkansas than NY is..

  29. CB December 12th, 2010 at 6:11 pm

“The Rays are weaker, but maybe not “much” weaker when all is said and done.”

    BD-

I agree with you. The Rays will take a step back but they are still going to be a threat. They are still going to have good starting pitching next season and that will keep them in the wild card hunt.

The other factor is the Jays. They will be better as well.

Togther the Rays and Jays create an added complication for the Yanks to take a risk with thinking they’ll get the wild card.

The unbalanced schedule will make things very complicated for any AL East team next season because there will be 4 good to very good teams.

The wild card will still most likely come out of the AL East, but those teams are going to beat each other up and that opens up possibilities for the AL Central as was the case in 2008.

The Yanks can opt for a strategy of Joba or Nova, etc. to fill out the rotation. But there is real risk with that strategy. They may not make the playoffs.

  30. Yogi Mantle December 12th, 2010 at 6:12 pm

Thing with the Rays is they are also shopping Garza. They are reducing payroll, and sometimes having a team broken up as theirs has been, where they lose so many to free agency, not even trying to re-sign any of them, it can shake up the remaining members of the team.

It will have a different feel to it, and inexperience on their part might show up at inopportune times.

  31. ac1 December 12th, 2010 at 6:13 pm

Lee choosing Anaheim would be more of a slap in the face to Texas than if he chose the Yankees.

  32. Doreen December 12th, 2010 at 6:14 pm

“It’s time to make the donuts.”

    My offering.

  33. blake December 12th, 2010 at 6:14 pm

The loss of the guys in their bullpen will hurt the Rays more than anything….they couldn’t hit last year but they won with starting pitching, defense, and their pen. They still will have good starters but their pen will take a big hit.

  34. Bret The Hitman December 12th, 2010 at 6:17 pm

   Scott Boras blocked me on his Twitter

  35. Carlo December 12th, 2010 at 6:17 pm

Benoit, soriano, choate, balfour. The entire pen needs to be rebuilt.

  36. DocTodd December 12th, 2010 at 6:18 pm

Team Braunecker is now on the clock….and has been for days….

  37. Yogi Mantle December 12th, 2010 at 6:19 pm

The Rays have been winning on timely hitting as well. Their offense was streaky, but they seemed to get a good deal of hits at timely points of the games. With some of their former key players being gone, their offense might not be as good. Their pen was pretty solid last season and that is changed as well, as Blake stated.

It will be a slog to play in the East. All the teams are going to be tough, unless the O’s fall back to what they were in the beginning of last season. The O’s seem to have some really decent talent but they somehow were falling short. If they get it together its going to be quite interesting.

  38. randy l. December 12th, 2010 at 6:21 pm

“is Tampa a much weaker team this year?”

    bd-

i think in addition to losing CC, their bullpen has lost multiple guys.

i’m not saying that they’ll be a bad team, but i would be surprised if they won more than 90 games.

  39. Bret The Hitman December 12th, 2010 at 6:22 pm

I don’t think the Yanks would miss the playoffs with Nova in the rotation.

Lee is an upgrade over Pettitte and Nova should be able to out-pitch Vazquez.

With the prospects saved from signing Lee instead of trading for a pitcher, the Yankees could easily use them to upgrade the offense as well…not to mention the pen.

  40. Chase December 12th, 2010 at 6:24 pm

That wasn’t Scott Boras, it was a parody account.

  41. NYY fan in NH December 12th, 2010 at 6:26 pm

I was just thinking about the catcher’s for next year. Still pending the Martin saga. If Montero stays and makes it out of spring training, then you’re looking at about 30-35 HR’s out of that position. You take that and put it against the Sox catchers and there’s a huge gap. I expect Posada to put up better numbers with more rest.

  42. Bret The Hitman December 12th, 2010 at 6:27 pm

    Chase,

Really? How did it get verified with the Twitter verification seal?

  43. Captain Clutch December 12th, 2010 at 6:27 pm

The Rangers front office sure do a lot of interviews. The conference call after the offer, 2 Ryan interviews this week and Greenberg the other day. Hopefully that is them talking to their fans instead of being confident.

  44. BBFan December 12th, 2010 at 6:28 pm

    Who is Soriano’s agent?

  45. randy l. December 12th, 2010 at 6:29 pm

if martin can throw out 35- 40% of the runners i think he’d be very valuable in neutralizing the red sox running game. they need some one who can do this whoever it is.

  46. Yogi Mantle December 12th, 2010 at 6:31 pm

Posada has been taking a real beating as catcher. With him being a DH for a lot more of the games his knee should be in less pain as well as his hands. Its going to be an adjustment for him playing that role, if that is what ultimately happens.

I’m looking forward to seeing how many HRs Bautista will be hitting this coming season.

  47. Doreen December 12th, 2010 at 6:32 pm

The Rays also lost Pena, no? Didn’t hit for much average, but had power.

  48. Yogi Mantle December 12th, 2010 at 6:34 pm

The Rangers FO are under new management. That makes them hard to figure out. Ryan is a talker. I do think that a lot of the chatter from them, especially their press conference to tell everyone they finally made their offer(s) to Lee, seems to be for the benefit of the Ranger fans. Especially if they lose Lee, they can talk about how hard they tried.

  49. Yogi Mantle December 12th, 2010 at 6:35 pm

I had heard that the Rays had some interest in Giambi. He would be a decent replacement for Pena’s bat. Not sure where that stands, if anywhere.

  50. LGY December 12th, 2010 at 6:35 pm

Whenever Lee signs is going to be a big story, but at some point the anticipation and excitement of the whole thing is going to wane.

If Braunecker keeps dragging this out he runs that risk. Eventually people are just going to say “finally” instead of all the excitement and anticipation that is going on right now.

This news is prime to explode and create the most news now.

  51. start_wearing_pink December 12th, 2010 at 6:37 pm

As the rosters stand now, the Rays in 2011 are done.

They have on legitimate threat in their lineup – Longoria.

Their pitchers consist of inconsistency and injury questions, Shields, Niemann and Davis.

Price is a dominant 1 and Garza is an okay 2. But rumors have Garza being shopped. If Hellickson starts for them and is really good, then they have decent pitching. But as it stands now, they are not a threat at all.

The Jays are a decent threat, their offense should regress to the mean, their pitching is young and actually pretty decent. If they trade for Greinke, look out.

  52. GreenBeret7 December 12th, 2010 at 6:38 pm

•Christian Red of The New York Daily News hears from a source that the Lee situation “should get resolved early this week.”

    ———————————————————————————————————————-

It should have been “resolved” 2 days ago.

  54. start_wearing_pink December 12th, 2010 at 6:39 pm

Although, I will say that the combination of Davis, Price, Niemann, Garza, and Shields is better than what the Yankees currently have as their starting rotation. Hopefully, that will change in less than 24 hours.

With all the left-handed batters now in their lineup, if boston had more resources it would have made sense for them to add the best available FA lefty, Lee, so that their lineup wouldn’t have to face him.

Hopefully they are not the mystery team.

They would have to trade one of their starters, but it’s not impossible to imagine that it could be done.

Gary, I am so hating what they’ve been doing, totally because it’s the Pats. I think someone needs to take a 2 by 4 to Belichick just because he is about the most sour, arrogant, and condescending jerk around. If nothing good ever happened to his teams, it would be too good for him. I cannot stand the cheating loser.

What the Giants did to them as definitely karma. But I think he deserves non-stop karma.

SOMEONE STOP THE DAMNED PATS, WOULDYA PLEASE!!!

Okay realistically, what are the chances that the Packers can take it to the Pats on their home field. I’m not counting on it happening but the sweetest thing of all would be for the Bills to jam it to them. But we know that’s not going to happen.

GB lost to the LIons today. Forget them.

  94. trisha - true pinstriped blue December 12th, 2010 at 7:37 pm

Fran, all I can hope is that the Pats are being set up for a huge fall. You know, kind of like what happened during their last “perfect” season. You know I’m a fan of the big hammer coming down at the very last minute.

  95. trisha - true pinstriped blue December 12th, 2010 at 7:38 pm

GB lost to the Lions but Rodgers was hurt and probably was hurt long before he was taken out of the game. He was sacked early on in the game. He played like he was in the ozone for quite a while there.

    Trisha,

I didn’t know Rogers was hurt. That makes a big difference.

    ========================================

    Fran,

The Jets were my first favorite football team back in the Namath days. My Dad liked the Giants but couldn’t pull me into football like he did baseball. When I married, my husband’s whole family were Giants fans…so I still like both teams.

  98. clownthrowindown December 12th, 2010 at 7:41 pm

Patriots – Celtics – Bruins – and now a loaded Sox team.

How does NY with all its $$$ keep letting Boston be a better sports town?

Another year NY teams get dominated and beat up in the press.

clown, are you a stupid douche bag in real life or do you just parade as one here? What city’s team won a Super Bowl more recently, NY or Suxville? How about the more recent World Series win, NY or Suxville? And what about the Bruins, fool? Or does three and out titillate you?

Why don’t you take your jealous little ass out of here and descend to the level where you’d be happiest – with the rest of the witless beantown fools who have New York envy written all over them. You singularly make jackasses look like Rhodes scholars.

  109. Carlo December 12th, 2010 at 7:53 pm

Wait – I do remember something about hockey……didn’t the bruins blow a 3-0 series lead recently?

I really try to be tolerant but when someone makes a living out of playing the fool that person needs to be dropkicked, and constantly – though some of the clown’s statements make me think that may be part of the problem. Dropkicked on his head too many times.

    Carlo,

I didn’t say Boston would win all four championships. But I wasn’t talking about past history either. Do you root for past teams or do you root for the guys out there now?

And you neglected to mention the Mets, the Jets, the Islanders and the Nets. The only NY team that’s even in the same class with a Boston team is the Yankees. And that’s only if they get Lee.

  124. trisha - true pinstriped blue December 12th, 2010 at 8:05 pm

Fran, I didn’t get to see the Jets game because I was watching Chicago. Believe me, that was a painful watch. I really don’t know if it’s easier to watch a team lose by 29 points or 4 points.

    :(

  125. BIG AL December 12th, 2010 at 8:05 pm

    WOW trisha -

Can’t you find it in your heart to be more open in the expression of your true feelings concerning trolls, LMAO.

  126. mick December 12th, 2010 at 8:07 pm

After getting their clock cleaned last week , the Jets had to bounce back today. What do they do….they revert back to the worst nightmare for Jets fans. This is not only the fault of the QB and his receivers who dropped TD passes, but the Coach, who is clueless and naive , Belichick owns him.

He had the audacity to say the fault was “not on one man,” referring to his QB.
Sure wasn’t, it was on him, why not admit it.
This collapse will go down in history when they lose the next 2 games against the Steelers and Bears and miss the playoffs.

  127. trisha - true pinstriped blue December 12th, 2010 at 8:07 pm

And as an aside, Brady looks like such a little freak with that dumb hair and beard. Ugh.

  128. trisha - true pinstriped blue December 12th, 2010 at 8:09 pm

Big Al, I say that any Sux fan who ventures onto our sacred territory does so at her or his own risk – especially those who come here to work out their life-long angst about rooting for hapless teams from Suxtown.

  129. trisha - true pinstriped blue December 12th, 2010 at 8:10 pm

And what does Clown think the Sux used to get Carl Crawford? Beer cans?

  130. GreenBeret7 December 12th, 2010 at 8:11 pm

Santonio Holmes has been a flop so far this year. How many wide open drops has he had this year? He cost the Jets the game today.

  131. BIG AL December 12th, 2010 at 8:12 pm

This clown has lots of company this off season, and others here that profess to be Yankees fans, but, spend the majority of their time running down the team and their FO.

I to get sick of it, and find it difficult to hold back.

So very happy to see you back.

  132. mick December 12th, 2010 at 8:14 pm

Holmes has been great until today. He has made many game winning catches. He dropped a TD pass today but Sanchez was horrible today, still shellshocked from last week.

  133. BIG AL December 12th, 2010 at 8:14 pm

    GB7 -

They’ll blame the rain, wet ball etc, none of these guys stand up and admit they cost their team a win. The last 2 weeks has been a train wreck.

  134. trisha - true pinstriped blue December 12th, 2010 at 8:14 pm

    trisha -

Great, I love how you handle the ball.

  136. mick December 12th, 2010 at 8:16 pm

Holmes drop cost the Jets 4 pts as they kicked the field goal, they lost by 4.
Cotchery dropped an easy one too but Sanchez missed wide open receivers and too many INT’s like last year. He seemed demoralized.

  137. raymagnetic December 12th, 2010 at 8:17 pm

My name is clownthrowindown and I’m even stupider than my name would suggest. True story.

  138. Fran the original December 12th, 2010 at 8:18 pm

The Jets didn’t blame the weather or anything else. They admitted they played a poor game and dropped too many passes. The OL was awful as well. Ryan thought about pulling Sanchez at the end of the 3rd quarter.

    mick,

I agree that the Jets were humiliated last week. All the more reason to come back this week and take it out on Miami. After the game last week all the Jets were talking about how they would come out this week and get off to a fast start and I expected that.

  148. LGY December 12th, 2010 at 8:30 pm

In regard to the NYDN story about a decision “early this week,” I don’t understand how a Yankee source would have any idea when Lee is making his decision.

The only people that know when this decision is coming are Lee and Braunecker.

  149. jacksquat December 12th, 2010 at 8:50 pm

If Lee does not have a decision tomorrow, Cashman should get on the phone with Seattle and see what they might want for Cy Felix (I know it would never happen), then make sure that word gets out about “Yankees in trade talks for Felix Hernandez”.

The weekend is enough, Lee needs to also have some consideration for whichever team he picks (not to mention the other one) needing to get other things done.

  150. GreenBeret7 December 12th, 2010 at 8:50 pm

From what I’ve seen from Holmes, he leads the NFL in WODP this year and at least 2 were in the end zone.

  151. Fran the original December 12th, 2010 at 8:54 pm

    GB,

I have watched all of the Jet games this season. Holmes has dropped some wide open passes like today in the end zone, but he also won 2 games for them. One was a TD pass and the other was a long pass that set up the game winning FG.

  152. YankeeBlue222 December 12th, 2010 at 8:58 pm

This whole waiting around for Cliff Lee to make a decision is ridiculous at this point. He’s coming across as arrogant and greedy. Make a dang decision already.

The more he prolongs this, the more I am getting turned off and realizing how bad paying 7/$170M for a pitcher that’s 32.

In fact, I’m more turned off about his behavior than I am when my girlfriend farts in bed.

  153. GreenBeret7 December 12th, 2010 at 9:01 pm

Fran, I know that he’s caught his passes, but, that’s why he’s there, but, just too many were when he was nearly alone….today is just 2 of them. What did they use to call it? He keeps hearing footsteps from 5-10 yards away.

  154. West Coast Yankee Fan December 12th, 2010 at 9:05 pm

Braunecker just got offers Thursday – it’s Sunday. This is not a long time. There are multiple offers to compare and evaluate with estate planners, accountants, etc. This is normal.

Fran, I have to laugh when I see the whining and complaining about Sanchez. They would have hated Joe Willie after 2 years in the NFL, too. That’s what they seem to forget. He’s in his 2nd year, and he doesn’t have Don Maynard and George Sauer to throw to, either, or Matt Snell coming out of the backfield to throw to.
