Cashman: “When they do, the whole world will know.”

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Dec 13, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Thirty seconds on the phone. That’s pretty much all it takes for Brian Cashman to give his update on the great Cliff Lee Watch of 2010.

“Dude, I got no idea,” he said. “In terms of when are they going to make a decision, when they do, the whole world will know.”

Cashman doesn’t seem flustered or impatient. A weekend has passed, not a month.

“Just like every other day,” he said. “I’ve got no word.”

• Cashman would not comment on the team’s reported interest in Russell Martin. Buster Olney continues to report that the Yankees are being aggressive in their pursuit, and he wouldn’t be surprised to hear of an agreement.

• Karl Ravech says the Rangers are making a push for Adrian Beltre, which Ravech takes as a sign Lee is leaning toward New York. I’m not as convinced. Don’t know yet what kind of splash that new ownership is going to make, or how much they’re willing to spend. It’s curious, no doubt, but it doesn’t significantly affect my opinion on the Lee decision.

The Yanks’ pursuit of Martin continues to puzzle me. I feel like it is bad news about something, but what I don’t know. What salary is being offered will tell us something – $2M is one thing and $5M is another.

    ———————-

    I wouldn’t worry.

Remember in 2008 when the Yankees went into the season with Hughes and Kennedy in the back of the rotation and no insurance – then Hughes got hurt and Kennedy stunk and the Yankees were stuck with guys like Sidney Ponson? They don’t want to go through that at the catcher position this year.

The ideal situation is that Jesus Montero takes hold of the spot like Jeter and Cano siezed their spots – but if that’s not the case the Yankees want a better option than Cervelli or having to rely too heavily on Posada.

    Chip-

It seems like Martin is moving into “too much money for insurance or part-time” territory. Greg Zaun is still available, probably for less, a number of free agent catchers were available for less who the Yanks passed on.

    That’s what worries me.

I don’t think pursuit of Martin is definitely a bad sign. Cash is just being thorough. Means we aren’t thrilled with Cervelli’s lack of bat, Montero isn’t going to just be plunked down behind the dish from the start, and Posada is no longer viable for any sustained period of time behind plate b/c of leg/concussions possibly?? I am guessing as usual we just want to be backed up in spades at catcher.

Also probably would like to keep Martin away from Boston. Let them continue to roll out Tek and Salty. I like that idea!

  13. ac1 December 13th, 2010 at 12:17 pm

It’s funny. You all want depth, but don’t want to pay for it. $5M for Martin is not that big a deal, and he will likely be playing a lot since Posada is the DH and Montero is 20 years old.

  14. Wave Your Hat December 13th, 2010 at 12:17 pm

That Martin is bad news for Montero, through either less playing time or trade. If the Yanks sign Martin for $2M I’m not very worried. But if they sign him for $5M, I am.

  15. West Coast Yankee Fan December 13th, 2010 at 12:18 pm

Interesting Cashman didn’t mention the phone call with Braunecker to Chad. (if it happened). Could mean any number of things.

    1. Pedestrian question on proposal language or seeking clarification on something.

    2. Last call to see if that is Yankees final offer.

    * When you fly with someone they get to call you dude from then on.

    __

reading WAY TOO MUCH into it. They just want to be prepared in case the 20 year old Montero isn’t ready to catch CC, Lee, Pettitte, AJ and Hughes full time, and not pressure him to rush and not have a back up plan ready.

  19. GreenBeret7 December 13th, 2010 at 12:20 pm

Why would signing Martin (bad risk) just to trade Montero? Martin’s no guarantee to make it out of ST. That leaves Posada and Cervelli. You know? Thoses two guys nobody wants to see catching?

  20. UnKnown December 13th, 2010 at 12:20 pm

So the Rangers and Yankees have back up deals in place as I see it.

Yankees sign Lee then Beltre gets signed and either Kinsler or Young gets dealt to KC for Grienke

Rangers sign Lee and Yankees get Martin and Deal Jesus for a top of the line Starter. I just am not big on Grienke in NY. My opinion only but hopefully if they do deal Montero it is for someone other than Grienke

  21. Bret The Hitman December 13th, 2010 at 12:21 pm

    Wave,

If the Yankees are lining up a trade involving Jesus Montero, chances are it’s a good one. I definitely think they’re building a market for him by advertising their pursuit of Martin in public view. It’s not like they’d be giving Montero away for free if they decide to trade him.

The Yanks don’t sign bench players to $5M deals. There were/are other free agent catchers who would play for significantly less.

If that’s what Martin is getting, he’s going to play. That means either the Yanks don’t think Montero is ready to catch, which is bad news, or they are planning to trade him, which is bad news. The other possibility, that the Yanks are stupidly overpaying for a catcher who’ll appear in 40 or 50 games, doesn’t bear considering.

If the offers are in the $2M or less range, then sure, he’s a back-up or insurance.

I wouldn’t say going for Beltre means a ton. One could also take from that that the new ownership is proving to Lee that they will spend money and commit to win. I, for one, don’t see how they could hope to sign Beltre and Lee to extended deals and hope to sign Hamilton and many more. The thing with Lee is the Yankees know they can absorb the money in years 6 & 7. The Rangers don’t. And I just don’t see how they can’t invest their money better and possibly get Grienke who is a great pitcher and fits with the youth on their team.

  45. Mark in Tampa December 13th, 2010 at 12:31 pm

If Lee doesn’t sign with the Yanks, it doesn’t bug me too much from that perspective-the committment is an awful lot for a veteran who was sent back down to the minors as recently as ’07.

What would bother me is the prospect/player cost to trade for the alternative. Possibly Gardner and Montero +. I would be willing to give up just about anybody except Montero, but I think whether he is included will be the deal breaker in any move for a front line pitcher.

  46. Phranchise December 13th, 2010 at 12:32 pm

Montero is going no where. Cervelli might in a package though now. Think about it. Martin is a safer bet since he has experience than Cervelli. Montero is unknow back there. Cervelli wasn’t exactly setting the world on fire as much as he played, but Martin has been the primary catcher for years. It allows you to work Montero in. Martin is arb. eligible so the Yankees could keep him next year too. By then you know whether Montero can split time or will be a full time catcher. Martin might be a backup and play some DH. And this allows for the development of Romine, Murphy and Sanchez for two full years in the minor leagues if none of them are traded. The deal would just make sense now and two years from now. Even if he never gets back to his allstar level. And at 27 or whatever he is, his knees shouldn’t be shot.

  47. ac1 December 13th, 2010 at 12:32 pm

Chad and others, a very interesting question plucked from Rob Neyer’s chat:

“Is the BBWAA still on track to not vote for players who have award bonus clauses in their contracts in 2013? Because that would seem to put a serious hamper in Jeter’s player option that depends upon, among other things, getting the MVP in 2013 and 2014. Seems silly to set up a contract with bonuses that are literally impossible to get, unless something has changed recently”.

  50. PittsburghYankeeFan December 13th, 2010 at 12:34 pm

I suspect the Rangers are not giving the 7th year. That was too much even for them, and I think 6 years is too much for them as well. Jon Daniels is talking some sense into Nolan Ryan and Chuck Greenberg. Nationals have a crazy owner, so nobody can talk sense with them.

It makes much more sense for the Rangers to get Beltre and trade for Grienke. It makes them a likely better team than if they signed Cliff Lee to a Yankee-like contract, and they are on the hook for less money.

Alright, let’s get this done. Everyone knows what the market is.

The hope is that Martin would be for Montero what Girardi was for Posada.

When Posada first came up for good in 1997 he caught 60 games, then 111 the next year and so on…the Yankees would probably like to do that with Montero too…break him in gently.

With Posada being looked at strictly as a DH the only viable option for Montero to share time with was Cervelli and I gather the Yankees don’t like the idea of Cervelli getting that many at bats.

Martin is 27, his game is almost exactly at this point what Girardi’s was when he was here – it makes a ton of sense to go this route.

Additionally, it keeps Boston weak behind the plate.

  54. PittsburghYankeeFan December 13th, 2010 at 12:36 pm

    Another thing.

I wish Chuck Greenberg had bought the Pirates away from the Nutting family (he’s from Pittsburgh, and he tried). We could have used his enthusiasm here, and it takes a lot less than Cliff Lee to please us.

  55. Phranchise December 13th, 2010 at 12:36 pm

I love the idea of signing Harden regardless. I think Harden had and has as good stuff as any of the Yankees pitching prospects. He is still young, just never staying healthy. I would feel much more comfortable slotting him in at the 5 for a year. He even works with that stuff in the bullpen. I really like him especially because of his age. He may be a bust, but his upside is massive. Now that they cut ties with Aceves and Mosley, I also like him for the chance to fill that void and not just leave Mitre out there.

  64. Patrick December 13th, 2010 at 12:40 pm

I think they would be signing Martin as more than a bench player but less than a starter. Sign Martin and have him catch 1/3 of the games or even split time with Montero at catcher. Then as the season progresses, whoever plays better gets more playtime. He’s not a bench player because he is guaranteed a significant amount of playing time but he’s not the starter because he isn’t catching the majority of the games.

I think signing Martin means that the Yankees aren’t convinced Montero can be a starting catcher but aren’t convinced that he CAN’T be either. I think they will still give him the opportunity to win the job but feel they need a solid insurance policy in case he fails.

Signing Martin and keeping Montero makes the most sense.
I’m not a big fan of Posada batting RH anyway so this allows Montero a chance to DH some against Lefties as well as catch his fair share behind the plate.
Posada will be pissed off but too bad as Girardi will have no problem playing the best lineup both offensively and defensively.

More important with his stuff and injuries, Harden could become a very capable one inning pitcher should they not retain Wood and others. I just think for a one year deal, they can afford to pay a bit and take the risk. I mean they signed Randy Winn last year and that was awful.

Martin doesn’t scare me. Its the type of signing, that if it doesn’t work out, doesn’t really hurt you. I get people are trying to read into it, but it seems like it was the Yanks and Sox in pursuit of him. If I was picking which team I’d rather play platoon with, I’d wanna do it on a team who was anchored by a platoon that could already hit. At least that way, you’re not pressured to show up with your bat, just focus on calling pitches and a sound defense.

Rosenthal tweets that the lack of state income tax in Texas has minimal impact in the Cliff Lee talks, since Lee would reside in Arkansas instead. Rosenthal feels that the income tax-related savings the Rangers could promote would be balanced by a higher salary from the Yankees plus endorsements. George A. If he’s not convinced where to go by now then I say withdraw the bid and lets play with guys that really want to be here. Enough is enough.

  82. Dylan December 13th, 2010 at 12:53 pm

I don’t think that signing Martin means the end of Montero as a Yankee. What I do think it means is the end of Posada behind the plate. The Yankees aren’t going to give a 21 year old rookie a starting job with no backup plan. We don’t even know if Montero can handle a big league pitching staff. If we bring him up and he clearly needs some more time to develop, then we need a starting catcher. I think we all saw this year that Cervelli was exposed when he played every day, and I don’t think the Yankees want Posada to catch at all. This way, if Montero is ready then he catches most of the games, and Martin becomes the primary backup. If he isn’t ready, then they either keep him in AAA at the beginning of the season, or they start him off slowly by having him catch once or twice a week, while Martin is the every day catcher. I think this means that they don’t feel that Posada or Cervelli is a good enough backup plan.

The Yankees probably don’t want Montero to have to come in and catch 120 games in his first season and don’t feel comfortable giving Posada or Cervelli so much time behind the plate…Martin is a good option for what they need.

It doesn’t mean Montero will go to Scranton or some other team – just that the breakdown will probably be more like 50-50 with the two of them behind the dish.

Not one thing you said matters in the end to a guy with the cojones of Cliff Lee. Everyone who knows him, from CC to baseball executives on down, think the guy wants the big spotlight, as well as the big bucks.

He’s a nice guy as well, so what is going to say to Texas? Nice knowing you, but you can’t compete financially with the big gorilla?

I think he cares deeply about winning. This whole delay has been to try to get another year out of Texas, to get the Yankees to up their offer even more.

I think Texas has come to their senses now that Jon Daniels is back in town. They should listen to him.

First, he might not be signing with the intention of turning into a backup but that doesnt mean he might not get there if he plays himself out of either a starting or platoon job. Secondly, if someone waved a few million dollars in my face after the year (or three) that I’ve had I jump at it lol. Maybe he just cares about getting the chance to compete for a job.

Not odd in the least – the Yankees don’t want Jorge catching – his body can’t stand up to it anymore – the only way they could be more blunt about that is to hide his gear from him.

And based on your comments if that was all it was wouldn’t he be in Texas by now?

    1. He won’t be driving anywhere regardless.

    2. Income taxes are only based on the games where you play. This has been killed already as a few million difference and the Yankees offer is not only above that, but items such as playoff bonuses etc are probably more likely to be obtained on the Yankees as well as capturing bigger endorsement money.

    3. Fans will be fans. So stupid incident. If he signs here, who will be spitting anywhere near her? Plus she will get better seats I would think. Corporate bigwigs tend not to spit on people and care little about the actual game anyway.

    4. No hunting or fishing????? Didn’t Swisher and CC have a fishing trip last year. Isn’t AJ from down there and I am sure does some of that stuff as well.

    5. Everything we have read is he is a competitor, likes the big stage and wants a ring. So he is picking the laid back team that has made the playoffs for the first year and with no championship?

At of day who knows what he takes, but nothing stated makes me think one way or another. When he makes his pick he will give his own rationale. But there are just as many reasons to join the Yankees as there are to join the Rangers. Hence maybe why he isn’t going to rush his decision? Could it be as simple as that?

This Russell Martin stuff makes even LESS sense when you read this (from ESPN)

The stakes are high as the New York Yankees and Texas Rangers wait for free agent Cliff Lee to decide where he’ll be pitching in 2011 and beyond. The winner of the Lee sweepstakes will have an ace left-hander to plug in at the top of its rotation. The loser will have a giant hole where Lee was supposed to be.

Once Lee makes his call, the focus will inevitably shift to Kansas City’s Zack Greinke, a 27-year-old former Cy Young Award winner and everybody’s favorite Plan B. The news on that front doesn’t look good for either Texas or New York.

Baseball sources said that Kansas City general manager Dayton Moore is actively gauging the market for Greinke, and that both the Yankees and Rangers rank down the list of potential fits for Greinke. The reason: Neither team has enough of the commodity that Moore is seeking in trade.

The Royals have a wealth of pitching talent in the minor leagues, a hot first base prospect in Eric Hosmer, an elite young third baseman in Mike Moustakas and a hard-hitting catcher, Wil Myers, who is probably going to have to shift to the outfield in the majors. As a result, sources say, Moore has focused on adding up-the-middle position players who are close to major league ready. And neither the Yankees nor the Rangers provide the best match for Kansas City.

The Yankees do have three catchers — Jesus Montero, Gary Sanchez and Austin Romine — among their list of top prospects. Infield prospect Eduardo Nunez would likely be part of a Yankees trade package, and sources said that outfielder Brett Gardner’s name has come up in conversations between the clubs. But it appears that package wouldn’t be enough to pry Greinke loose from the Royals.

  102. Bronx Jeers December 13th, 2010 at 1:11 pm

We traded Melky a year too early. Could have had Grienke.

  103. ET December 13th, 2010 at 1:14 pm

As CB said… if Lee was really in the intense deliberation stage, his agent wouldn’t still be trying to extract higher offers from us and TX and leaking this “mystery team” nonsense.

They are still negotiating and trying to get more $$$ from someone, most likely the Yankees. But Cashman explicitly said they would not raise their offer. Then it becomes a game of chicken. Would Cashman really let Lee go to TX over a few million? He’s already thrown principals out the window, so he won’t be proving anything by not upping the offer a little if ti helps land Lee.

    2. Who said that Martin is coming in to foster a trade of Montero in the first place.

I think it’s far more likely that Martin is being brought in because he’s a better option to split time with Montero (much the way Girardi split time with Jorge) than either Posada or Cervelli are.

A catcher that might start 30-50% of the games is not just a regular bench player and would warrant a higher salary.

Signing Martin does not necessarily mean that Montero is going to get traded. “Starting catcher” means he will start games. It does *not* necessarily mean he will catch 140 games.

The Rangers pursuit of Lee is really questionable in terms of the long term benefit vs. risk they’re incurring.

In pursuing Lee the Rangers are no longer leveraging one of their biggest assets – the awful division they play in.

The AL West has been bad for a while – but right now it is remarkably bad. And the Angels, A’s and M’s haven’t substantively gotten better.

Build a 90 win team and you can have a fairly high degree of confidence in winning that division and making the playoffs. Their rotation without Lee is good enough to win that division. They’ve already lost the world series with Lee against a major underdog so it’s not like Lee guarantees them a world series.

And one of the worst outcomes for them of signing Lee would be if that in turn made them leave Feliz in the pen.

Nolan Ryan has made a big deal out of treating pitchers in a more old school fashion. I would really be interested in knowing what his plans are for Feliz and how he views him.

Ryan himself was the paradigm of young power pitcher who needed time to develop. If Ryan was coming up now as a young pitcher he would have been relegated to the bull pen because his control was so poor and his lack of a third pitch.

All of the tremendous value Ryan generated in his hall of fame career as a starter would have never happened.

Feliz is a more refined pitcher than Ryan was at a similar age.

But Feliz isn’t going to get a shot to start – the very shot that made Ryan’s career – because he doesn’t have a change up yet?

He has good fastball command and a terrific breaking pitch. But not having a third pitch at his age is going to relegate him to the pen? Ryan at that age had no clue where the ball was even going.

Ryan’s made a big deal out of being old school. If he leaves Feliz in the pen however he will have adopted one of the worst parts of “new school” thinking that pervades the contemporary game.

This was a pretty interesting column on the reaction a number of media people had to Heyman’s recent comments about “mystery teams”:

This morning several baseball media heavyweights took public jabs as SI.com’s Jon Heyman over his repeatedly reporting on a supposed “mystery team” joining the Rangers and Yankees in the mix for Cliff Lee.

First there was Buster Olney of ESPN.com tweeting: “Remember: if you ever read about a ‘mystery team,’ it can only come spoon-fed from an agent who is trying to create leverage.”

Shortly after that Peter Gammons of MLB.com got in on the fun: “Mystery, Alaska in on Lee?”

And then Keith Law of ESPN.com tweeted: “Saw the Mystery Team GM at the winter meetings. He was wearing a Guy Fawkes mask.”

Heyman tried to brush off the criticisms by making a joke about the situation, tweeting that he was “grabbing lunch at MLB Network now” while using a #mysterysandwich hashtag, but shortly after that his latest column was posted at SI.com and it included more references to the supposed “mystery team” bidding on Lee.

In fact, Heyman used the phrase “mystery team” five times in the column (and even threw in a “mystery offer” for good measure):

When colleagues of yours in the same industry are mocking you and your credibility – that’s just not good.

And despite that Heyman keeps running with it. Great bit from his column:

“Lee is believed to be deciding between the Yankees, Rangers and one remaining mystery team, whose offer is also a mystery.”

Patrick’s on the mark. Feliz has never been given a real shot to start. He throws 98 and commands the ball well. He has a devastating slider.

Instead of just shifting him to the rotation to see how he does alongside Wilson and Lewis you’re trying to sign Lee to a 6/130M+ deal.

It’s just very ironic. A young Nolan Ryan now wouldn’t get a shot to start even by his own older self.

Yeah, but then again, Heyman has always been decent at reporting news. Gammons is a mouth piece for the Sox organization and hasn’t launched a credible story since when? I mean the guy picked Matt Clement to win the Cy Young Award? Olney always has nothing but good things to say about the Yankees of course. Not a jilted reporter at all. Pretty much ESPN has gone an actual news source to not much from a reporting standpoint. I mean Law is an ESPN guy too. Don’t you think there might be a little back and forth between ESPN and CNNSI?

Re: I posted this stuff yesterday but are the Rangers going to do what it takes long term to keep that team together. If they signed Lee then they could potentially be looking at giving big contracts to retain players 4 years in a row. (Lee this year, Wilson in 2011, Hamilton in 2012, and Cruz in 2013). Those 4 players alone could command upwards of 70 million dollars to keep them.

Also, the Rangers aren’t nearly as young as everyone makes them out to be. It seems that way because they have so many arbitration guys but many of them got late starts. Hamilton, Cruz, Kinsler, Wilson, Lewis, Young, etc…..are all either 30 already or close to it.

This interest in Martin seems to be much more a part of the “Plan B” situation if Lee goes with Texas. Martin gives the Yankees more depth in the catcher position and opens up the possibility of including Montero in any top pitching target trade offer. It would be a shame to have to see him get dealt that way, but the option becomes available if Cashman needs to use it.

  161. BD (Boston Dave) December 13th, 2010 at 2:01 pm

I agree with Wave Your Hat, except I believe this all hinges on how NY sees Martin.

They presumedly really like the guy and feel they can get a productive catcher for a fraction of the price because he had been injured.

If Martin and Montero both play well, nobody is complaining. If Montero starts slow and Cervelli becomes the everyday starter, fans will be ripping Cashman.

I’m not saying Martin is the guy, but NY clearly likes him, and they should have another option in case Montero needs more time. $5M? I guess the Yanks feel it’s worth the risk for just 1 season.

If he plays well, they have a valuable trade chip or a type-A free agent in 2 years. If not, they lose $5M.

  162. Phranchise December 13th, 2010 at 2:02 pm

Why is Martin a plan B? The money doesn’t factor in and Montero will not be moved for anyone that wouldn’t be named Halladay, Lee, Josh Johnson or King Felix? The last two obviously aren’t available.

Martin gives them two years of flexability as he is arbitration eligible. He is insurance if Montero is really bad behind the plate. They don’t want Jorge catching and Cervelli was not good offensivley or defensively as a starter.

The Yankees have nothing as insurance if the rookies struggle.

So if Jorge can’t catch, gets hurt and retires the Yankees are stuck going in for free agents again.

It’s a proactive and inexpensive move to provide depth and flexability.

Plan B for Lee would be signing Harden or Webb, throwing cash at Andy to come back and trying to pry Buerhle and his $14 million contract off the White Sox and not give up much in the way of talent.

This has nothing to do with Montero. It does make Cervelli expendable and maybe one of their younger cacthers.

Thoughts on the main topics of the day:

    1. Lee will make his decision when he’s ready to make his decision. He’s not doing anything wrong – this is the last contract of his pro career and I would take my time too in his place.

    2. Russ Martin means nothing to the future of Jesus Montero with the Yankees. Most likely the Yankees see him and Montero working together the same way Girardi worked with Posada when Jorge was a rookie. The only person who loses a job/time is Cervelli. And it further reduces the chances of Jorge seeing any meaningful time behind the dish.

    3. At the height of football season radio shows are going to focus on football rather than the non-news of Cliff Lee still not being signed.

I think the yankees have determined that they have no interest of finding themselves with Cervelli being the de facto everyday catcher come August.

It’s reasonable to think something could be going on. That’s always possible.

But I do think that Martin, rather than being a starter or back up, is more risk mitigation first and foremost.

I don’t think they believe that Posada can catch on an even semi-regular basis or that Cervelli can do mush more than replacement level. In turn they find themselves with Montero.

That’s just a great deal of uncertainty and risk tied into an important position.

But we’ll see. Martin signing clearly says something about how they view their catching. Just hard to know what exactly.

If Lee signs I don’t see Montero being dealt. And even if he doesn’t sign, other than Greinke there’s no one worth montero who is available and they seem to have some reservations about Greinke.

Why are the Yankees interested in Martin? To answer that question, here’s another question: Who was the Yankees starting catcher in 2010? It wasn’t Posada. It was Cervelli, who started more games, caught more games, and caught more innings than Posada, who was supposed to be the #1. Cervelli can be decent if used properly, which is as a backup. He should start about 30-35 games and get 150 ABs, serving to rest the main catcher. He’s fine in that role.

It wasn’t his fault that he suddenly was the primary catcher, but defensively age caught up to Posada in 2010 and he has became more prone to smaller injuries that took him out of the line up, thrusting Cervelli into the primary/co-catcher role. The Yankees can’t go into 2011 with the potential of that happening again. Montero might be the everyday catcher, but that’s asking a lot for a kid (he turned 21 like two weeks ago) who has all of 100 games caught at AAA and has yet to even appear in a MLB game. The Yankees are not a second-division team that can just throw the starting catcher role to an untested kid. They will have to transition him into the role in 2011, which means they need another experienced MLB catcher on the roster.

My concern is Martin even the right guy? Look at the splits between Cervelli and Martin:

    Cervelli 2010: .271/.359/.335
Martin 2010: .248/.347/.332 (his 2009 stats were about the same)

They seem to be the same hitter to me. Martin has the experience, so he has the edge defensively, and that’s really the key here, but he doesn’t exactly look like the type of player the Yankees plan to have catching long term. Montero will be broken in over the coming year.

New York (AP) — The average salary in Major League Baseball has finished over $3 million for the first time.

The 912 players in the major leagues before rosters expanded in September averaged $3,014,572, the Major League Baseball Players Association said Monday. The average rose 0.6 percent from last year’s $2,996,106, the smallest increase since a 2.5 percent drop in 2004.

The New York Yankees had the highest average at $7,604,937, down slightly from a $7,663,351 average when they won the World Series in 2009. Pittsburgh was last for the second straight season at $1,140,598.

does it bother anyone how these FAs continually use the Yankees? I mean it seems like the franchise should sell itself beyond dollars but any recent FA we have had to vastly overpay the next competitor instead of making the deal equal and hoping the franchise sells itself. Does anyone think CC would have picked the Yankees a few years ago if the Angels and Dodgers had the exact same monetary deal on the table? I think no, just kind of baffles me how the Yankees can’t give fairly equal(or a little higher) deals on the table and still win these battles for FAs.

Right. Also, he’s stated he plans to keep him home residence in Arkansas, so he will have to pay state taxes there. And when he plays road games, he will owe taxes in those states when his team is there. Think of how much “fun” it is to be the accountant of a pro-baseball player.

He could get some benefit if he signs with Texas, but not as much as is being discussed in the media. One report has it at only $1-$2 million over the course of the entire deal. That’s a rounding error. Also, what happens if he’s traded, just like the Rangers did with A-Rod? That tax benefit goes away, so a player should always go for the most money.

Why are the Yankees interested in Martin? To answer that question, here’s another question: Who was the Yankees starting catcher in 2010?
    —————————–

    Mike D -

More than that: How many games did Posada start in his first full season? 60. How many did he start the year after that? 111. The Yankees like to break in young catchers slowly and given that they don’t want Posada to catch and that Cervelli stinks, Martin is a good option.

As for comparing Martin to Cervelli – here’s the number that really matters: 39% to 14%. Russell Martin threw out 39% of basestealers while Cervelli threw out 14%.

  196. Jerkface December 13th, 2010 at 2:42 pm

Martin has physical batting tools which Cervelli does not. Even if they performed similarly in 2010, there is a higher ceiling to work with for Martin if you are Kevin Long. Also his defense has been much better at the major league level.

Cervelli was an excellent defender in the minors and in his first limited samples in the majors, but a full year really exposed him. He has defensive tools but if he doesnt use them he is worthless. Martin has proven to be able to use his batting and defensive tools in the past.

  198. Patrick December 13th, 2010 at 2:45 pm

I think CB is exactly right about why the Yankees want Russell Martin. I also think they will give Montero an opportunity to earn as much playing time as he can. If he proves he can handle catching on an everyday basis he will start more games behind the plate.

  199. DaSaint007 December 13th, 2010 at 2:46 pm

Yankees need someone capable of throwing out Ellsbury, Crawford, and Cameron when they face them 18 times during the 2011 season.

    Posada isn’t that person.
Cervelli, if he performs as he did last season isn’t either.
Martin still has a great arm. 39% is still pretty good.

  200. GreenBeret7 December 13th, 2010 at 2:46 pm

Brian Bruney with the White Sox. Would have been nice if he could have harnessed that arm on a consistant basis.

  201. Chip December 13th, 2010 at 2:47 pm

The Mets have spent more money on their GM and his top two assistants than they have on players this winter – and if the season started today Ollie Perez would be no worse than their third best starting option with Johan opening the year on the DL…

I’m just saying, waiting for Cliff Lee to make up his mind isn’t the worst thing in the world.

You figure if the Yankees get Martin you will have Martin, Montero, and Posada for games behind the plate and Posada and Montero at DH.

    I think it would be like 80 , 60, 22 games caught, 100, 40 for games DHed.

Montero would play in 100+ games and get 500 PA which would be a lot for a rookie catcher. Martin would be the ‘starting catcher’ unless he sucks. Posada would start about once or twice a week to catch say Andy Pettitte.

I can’t wait for this thing to be finally over, I’m starting to hate Cliff Lee and not his agent for this non-sense waiting game…. What is he waiting for? none of the teams will increase their offer, if you don’t know by now where you want you and your family to be you don’t deserve the money in the first place. Just end this today, go to Rangers if you choose so, hell go to the Red Sox for that matter, but dooooooooo something….

I believe that baseball players pay income taxes to every state they play in. Sure 81 games in NY will be more than 81 games in Texas. Most of Lees taxes will be paid to Ark regardless…

I can see the Yankees pushing Andy hard to come back as the plan B.
Plan C would be trading for a starter.
Either way, I think the Yankees will have a lower cost #5 starter.
Having both Lee and Andy in the rotation along with CC and AJ is really at lot of $$$.

  213. Melk Man December 13th, 2010 at 2:54 pm

The Yankees say the offer they have made to Cliff Lee is their final offer, and the only thing left for them to do is wait for him to decide if he wants to take it.

“We are not ratcheting up our offer,” general manager Brian Cashman said in a telephone interview Monday afternoon while waiting to hear something, anything, from Darek Braunecker, the only agent this winter selling a pitcher the Yankees are interested in buying.

“We are exactly where we were last week,” Cashman said, although he refused to confirm details of the Yankees offer, believed to be for a guaranteed seven years and somewhere between $140 and $160 million.

Also, the rumor has been floated, by Braunecker, that a ”mystery team” has also made an offer to Lee. Cashman professed ignorance of any other offers and said he believes the Yankees’ offer to be the best one on the table for Lee.

“But believe it or not, sometimes it’s not just about money,” he said.

Still, Cashman said “I would think today’s gotta be the day.”

“I really have no feel for how this is going to go,” he said.

“I don’t like this perception that we’re confused or disoriented or we don’t know what we’re doing,” Cashman said. “We have contingency plans in the event they decide to go another way.”

Posada would be opening day catcher in Yankee Stadium, and probably start 30 games.
Martin would be the ‘regular catcher’, starting about 100 games.
Montero would at least catch Hughes, and probably catch a total of 50-60 games in 2011.

  215. Chip December 13th, 2010 at 2:55 pm

•The unidentified third team is only willing to go four or five years, writes George A. King III of the New York Post.

If you don’t know who the team is, how are you getting information about what they are or aren’t offering? I would think you would know who you’re talking to and what team they’re associated with right? Does he wear a mask and disguise his voice so you can’t identify him?

This is easily the dumbest cover your behind thing I’ve ever heard…it is backup in case Lee pulls a fast one and signs somewhere that none of these “insiders” are talking about like Werth did with the Nationals – they can all turn around and say “we told you there was an unidentified team”

  216. austinmac December 13th, 2010 at 2:56 pm

In answer to Chad’s earlier question, no, it does not appear today is the day. I do think we can now put aside our beliefs Lee is simply having the real economic benefits calculated and making a decision. There is still negotiation going on with some team. I agree with the group who believes Lee is trying to get the Rangers to come up so he can sign with them.

Is there a good pitcher out there that would be available if the Yankees would also take on a bad contract? They would have $24M to use, and it could ease the trade requirements of the other team

    Martin (if he signs) – 90 – 100 games
    Montero – 50 – 60 games
    Posada – 10 – 12 games

  221. Melk Man December 13th, 2010 at 2:58 pm

    Also:

Cashman declined to divulge what other starting pitchers the Yankees were considering as fallback options, preferring instead to praise the pitchers he’s already got.

“I really don’t think we’ve got a lot of holes,” he said. “We’ve got one of the best in the league in CC. we’ve got a kid who won 18 games for us last year in Phil Hughes. And I really believe that A.J. Burnett is going to bounce back for us next year.”

Cashman said he still had no idea whether Andy Pettitte, at home in Texas contemplating retirement, would return in 2011. “We’ll get someone,” he said. “It’s just a matter of what level of someone. I like our chances next year, with or without Cliff Lee.”

  222. JoeyA December 13th, 2010 at 2:58 pm

    My question is this:

If a mystery team exists, what is the advantage to keeping the team a mystery, at this point?

  223. MikeD December 13th, 2010 at 2:59 pm

Chip and Boston Dave, then I think we’re all in agreement that having Martin is a good idea. I think I touched on both your points, although not in directly since my note was long enough already. Catcher is the most unique position on the field. You can’t hide a young kid and have him learn on the job if the team’s goal is to make the World Series, so they need a back-up plan, and yes the Yankees do have a history of breaking in their young catchers. That’s why Martin would help. (Signing him also keeps him away from the Red Sox, who have an even bigger hole to fill, as Varitek, like Posada, is not an everyday catcher any more, and Salty is also not that good of a catcher, and they don’t have a Montero in the wings.)

As for Cervelli, he did have a poor SB% last year, but his reputation through the minors and for his first season (and even the start of this year) was one of a good defensive catcher. He totally regressed from June forward. I chalk that up to him still learning, and that’s another thing to keep in mind with Montero. It takes time.

“In the end, Lee’s agent, Darek Braunecker, is going to be one of the big winners of this offseason because he has masterfully created this forum.

He does need to be careful of just one factor now and that is waiting so long that he turns his client from deliberate and calculating into a caricature of a complete mercenary. Already, I would think, his reputation in Texas is going to take a slam if Lee goes to New York because the Rangers have been so willing to pursue him where the industry did not think the organization would.”

I agree with Sherman here and mentioned something to this effect yesterday.

At some point, and I think that point is very soon Lee is going to turn into a punchline and damage some of the great reputation he and Lee have built up this process.

I think the issue with Cervelli’s decline wasn’t so much that he’s learning as it was that: he’s a back up who wore down and/or he got over exposed with all his playing time as just not being very good.

  228. Patrick from CT December 13th, 2010 at 3:03 pm

All this Russ Martin stuff is about replacing Cervelli with a better player.
The Yankees are not going to have Montero, or any other rookie, catch more than 1/2 the games.
It have been made clear that they want Posada to be the DH and #3 catcher. I sure hope that they let Posada catch 1-2 times per week / 30-40 times to stay sharp for the playoffs.

I think the only way Jorge catches more than 10 games is if Montero flops, Martin gets hurt and A-Rod is aching.

Other than that Jorge is going to DH or ride the pine.

As I said earlier – the Yankees have done everything short of telling Jorge to sell his catcher’s gear on EBAY to convey that they want no part of him squating this season.

    Chip,

LOL. You could never be an attorney. In the immortal words of Cashman, ‘Dude’ the words are key:

There’s a difference between ‘starting’ and ‘catching’.
Montero can catch in a game without starting that game.

Benny Blanco…Don’t listen to MLB radio. According to them, Yankees team is old and we are in serious danger. I didnt realize that 36 year old players are over the hill.
    ————————-

36 is pretty old for most MLB players, yet the Yankees aren’t a team of 36-year-olds, so if that was their point they’re way off base. They’ve been addressing their age over the past several seasons and doing it effectively. Their outfield were between 26-29, all productive, and collectively cheap. They’ll be the same next season. They added CC and Hughes to the rotation. Teix at first. They’re about to start adding in a 21-year-old kid at catcher over the coming season, moving Posada to DH and probably off the team after 2011. MLB teams don’t want to be too young or too old. It’s a balance, and the Yankees have been doing a good job. The Red Sox’ average age was even higher than the Yankees, and these are two of the best teams in the game.

Their comments suggest they’re focused on Jeter and A-Rod and ignoring the rest of the team.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

Someplace throughout the paragraphs you actually were able to make me a believer unfortunately only for a short while. I still have got a problem with your jumps in assumptions and you would do well to fill in those gaps. If you actually can accomplish that, I will surely end up being fascinated.

(There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

In addition, a misconception regarding the banking institutions intentions if talking about foreclosure is that the bank will not getreceive my repayments. There is a certain quantity of time in which the bank is going to take payments from time to time. If you are way too deep in the hole, they’re going to commonly demand that you pay the particular payment in whole. However, i am not saying that they will not take any sort of repayments at all. In the event you and the lender can be capable to work a little something out, this foreclosure practice may stop. However, if you continue to pass up payments beneath new system, the foreclosures process can just pick up from where it was left off.

Good day! I know this is kind of off topic but I was wondering if you knew where I could find a captcha plugin for my comment form? I’m using the same blog platform as yours and I’m having trouble finding one? Thanks a lot!
