The best use of memorabilia money I’ve ever heard

Do yourself a favor and take a few minutes this afternoon to read about a Yankees fan who found a fantastic use for his prized memorabilia (with a little help from – who else? – Mariano Rivera).

Great job by LoHud colleague Ned Rauch on this story.

Lowell would have been great in pinstripes. Oh well. Sometimes these things work out, sometimes they don’t. But it hurt watching him end up in a boston uniform. Just hurt.

    Repost:

If Yohan wasn’t injured – again – and didn’t have so much left in his contract, I’d advocate for trading for him. Surely Alderson wants to rid the team of that contract as quickly as possible. Maybe they’d agree to a salary dump and take back $30M of the remaining 3 years he has left. But just like boston-NYY doesn’t happen, NYM-NYY trades don’t happen either.

Oh, and this is definitely Papplebum’s last year in boston. With a $12M one-year deal, he’ll be a FA, but most likely a Type A FA. They’d be silly to offer arbitration, as he’d probably accept just to get the pay raise. Look for him to be traded this season.

Ugh, I saw this announcement and immediately thought of you.:( How will this affect your seeing games? (I am clearly ignorant about FLA.’s geography)

It would be faster for Tampa residents to go to Orlando to see yankee games than Orlando residents to go to Tampa to see yankee games. Traffic in tampa is horrible. Orlando is 45 minutes to an 1:15 away from tampa depending on how fast you drive. Going to a game or to St Pete for the Rays kicks the time up to 2-3 hours because of traffic.

I hate that they are going to move the Tampa Yankees but here in Tampa, they have hardly any fans who come out to the games. They are so good they deserve to have packed seats every night. Ill miss them but can always go to lakeland or clearwater to see them play.

The Angels were supposed to pursue
    Carl Crawford
    Adrain Beltre
    Rafael Soriano
    Scott Downs

But don’t worry, to appease their fanbase, next year they will consider pursuing
    Albert Puljois
    Prince Fielder
    CJ Wilson
    Rafael Soriano
    Jason Bartlett
    Jose Reyes
    Aramis Ramirez
    Yadier Molina
    and David DeJesus

    Fans should be very excited!

did the angels make a single move this offseason? didn’t they say they were going to be big players this winter?

    ————————-

The assumption was that they would be major players for Beltre, Crawford and Soriano.

Arte Moreno and Scott Boras do not get along (going back to the Tex contract) and so that essentially scrubbed them from Beltre and Soriano.

Crawford was just jumped on by the Red Sox so that was that.

They did improve their pen a bit with Takahashi and Downs. They’re getting Morales back and they’ll have Dan Haren in the rotation for a full year.

If Callaspo puts up a season like he had last year – they’ll be fine at 3b.

The real question is the OF though. They desperately needed to improve that defense and didn’t. Now they’re stuck with Rivera and Abreu in the corners unless they can deal Napoli for an OF.

  27. DaSaint007 January 18th, 2011 at 4:22 pm

blake, I often find the site to be wonky on my blackberry. Sometimes it goes back and forth between the mobile site (which I generally don’t like) and the full site (which I generally prefer unless a particular thread has over a thousand comments).

I don’t know if this is due to my blackberrry’s issues or the site’s. I tend to think it’s a Lohud issue, however, and I partially blame Jon Heyman.

  31. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes January 18th, 2011 at 4:26 pm

I never thought I’d write this, but I’m slowly buying into the notion that Joba is our best option as a 4th/5th starter.

After our CC, AJ, and Hughes, all of whom I think will do fine this season, its a huge question mark.

Nova can’t be relied upon as a 4th starter. No track record and little experience. As a 5th starter, he’d be perfect.

Pettitte is out of the equation. And quite frankly, I’m pretty disappointed in him for not making some kind of definitive decision, be it to retire altogether, return for the full season, or return halfway through. Andy, you’re my fav. pitcher of this era, but you’re also a grown man. Make up your mind, dude.

  34. BoJo January 18th, 2011 at 4:29 pm

If the Yankees do sign Jones and lock out Damon, and Angels won’t sign him because of the Moreno-Boras issue, that only leaves Rays and Os as landing spots for Damon. I’m not sure the Rays are interested…leaving the Os He really is running out of runway room here.

I live, with traffic at its worst, no more than 30 minutes from Steinbrenner field. Its about 45 to Clearwater and Dunedin depending on traffic. That’s one thing that I’m not looking forward to when they move because they are so close to me. If I’m at school its just 15 minutes. Orlando is definitely a quicker trip than tropicana field especially when you consider traffic to and from the games. I’m going to a Lakeland game this season, or a few. Maybe ill see you there.

  55. Jerkface January 18th, 2011 at 4:44 pm

What is your take on where the Rays should play? I hear even the Bucs games were not well attended.

If they were smart they’d build a stadium right next to Raymond James (I don’t think theres room but whatever) and make it into a sports complex with a real parking lot. Raymond James’ parking lots are just big… nothins. One used to be a mall that was torn down and now its a big dirt lot full of seagulls. It cost us 30 dollars to park there and it was awful. IT was like walking through a post apocalyptic wasteland.

And if they really, really wanted to grab a wider audience, they’d build it near Hard Rock casino on I4, which is right before you just get into Tampa proper. It’d be easier for everyone around to go to the games.

The bottom line: the further you go into Tampa and into St. Pete, the driving time becomes exponentially longer and more frustrating.

The Tampa Area as it stands has more TV viewers than it has stadium goers, so why not move it to Orlando? We have one of the largest colleges in the US and if they ran student promotions / a shuttle from UCF to the stadium I’m sure they’d grab more than they do now.

  56. Jerkface January 18th, 2011 at 4:45 pm

Bucs games weren’t well attended because they sucked last year. Then they got blacked out this year and no one knew how good they were doing.

And the stadium experience at Raymond James is not fun. Its expensive, hot, humid, theres nothing special about the food offered at the stadium, the give-aways get stolen by the volunteers that are handing them out. (We had season tickets for the 4 years before last) Even when there is not a sold out game, the volunteers would tell us we’d miss’d the giveaway, and we’d see the items stuffed in their pants or in boxes under the ramps.

We sent multiple letters to complain, and the bucs were good about sending us the give-away items in the end, but it was too much of a chore.

Not to mention the bucs fans are a loathsome group. Drunks and complainers the lot of em. Just wasn’t pleasant to go with the family. I sat next to a guy for an entire season that would make any of the gloom and doomers here look like trisha by comparison.

When the Glazers were not puting money in the team, the ticket prices remained jacked up. 75 dollars for upper-upper deck is absurd. I could take 4 people to a rays game for 75 bucs. I’m sure they’ll draw more next year, as the Bucs look really awesome now. I wasn’t sold on Raheem or Freeman, but they both won me over big time.

    From Yahoo Sports:

NEW YORK (AP)—The New York Yankees have agreed to one-year contracts with right-handers Phil Hughes(notes) and Joba Chamberlain(notes) and lefty Boone Logan(notes) to avoid arbitration.

Hughes receives $2.7 million for the 2011 season, while Chamberlain will earn $1.4 million and Logan $1.2 million for the Yankees, who lost in the AL championship series to the Texas Rangers in six games a year after winning the 2009 World Series.

    Hughes won a career-best 18 games last season with a 4.19 ERA over 29 starts and 31 appearances and was a first-time All-Star.

Chamberlain went 3-4 with a 4.40 ERA and three saves in 73 outings. Logan was 2-0 with a 2.93 ERA in 51 appearances.

Yankee fans as a group can move mountains. Especially in old Yankee Stadium. :)

UCF’s baseball field was supposed to get used by a minor league team, or they were in the works for it, but I guess it never panned out. It wasn’t A+, maybe GCL or something.

I just heard on WFAN about the Yanks avoiding arb with Phil, Joba and Logan – good stuff. It’s not a a nice process and it’s always best to avoid bad feelings if possible.

jerkface that’s the link above. from tampa you take i-4 east to exit 60. 429 north to end.

Well I just started going to Tampa Yankees games in 2010 and then they decide to move. Orlando is still too far for me. You should go to see them play in Lakeland which is closer to you. Ill probably go see them play lakeland or Clearwater when they move. But it won’t be until 2012 or 2013, later the better.

    J Alfred Prufrock -

May I offer a suggestion? Special Olympics is a great organization. My daughter is currently participating in Westchester County.

The site you link to is specifically for Delaware.

If people are interested, perhaps they might look for a way to donate to their local Special Olympics?

    ////

great suggestion.congrats on your daughter’s athletic prowess.Mevin Morse incidentally is a nationally reknown pediatrician who has written many books on the subject of NDE’s he “witnessed” among hundreds of terminally ill children under his care.he’s one of the foremost experts in the world on the subject, after having been a self-confessed ‘skeptic.’ the children’s stories which kept piling up changed his mind. I just learned about his role in Special Olympics down in Delaware through a link on a site I regularly visit.I’m going to pledge to this.

Nice to see a little good came out of Sam’s post, never needed all those baseballs anyway.

  99. m1kew January 18th, 2011 at 5:38 pm

    From Bronx Banter:

“New York has a long tradition of great players who can stay out boozing and courting all night and still kick ass the next day – Babe Ruth, of course; Mickey Mantle, for many years; most recently, David Wells threw a perfect game while still tipsy from the previous evening. I love players like that, who do everything wrong and then perform anyway. But of course that kind of thing will catch up with most people sooner or later — and apparently caught up with Martin on the “sooner” side.”

“It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez certainly seem like they’ve enjoyed the entertainment options New York offers, so to speak, but I’ve never gotten the sense that either of them is a big drinker and certainly they both take care of themselves and come ready to play. Martin will be surrounded by stars and veterans in the New York clubhouse and perhaps a few of them can take him under their wing; I imagine that at the very least, if Jorge Posada feels Martin is not playing his best, he will club him unconscious with his own bat.”

I just love the comment about how Posada help Martin avoid distractions.

It must be a great marketing deal they are getting, because it still doesn’t make sense to me. They have all their facilities in Tampa for rehab, extended ST, etc…and can play hteir kids in a park close to those facilities…one with the dimensions of YS…

  103. Betsy January 18th, 2011 at 5:40 pm

I thought those arb #s were fair……..If Phil improves this year, I’d guess the Yankees will try to lock him up.

G Love, that was you? As a rule, I dislike guest posts and almost never read them, but I got a kick out of yours………I sort of agree, but I’m torn. We have one major prospect in Montero. Romine has a lot of work to do to rebuild his rep and Sanchez is years away. Our other position prospects are not that super studs, so as this team ages, I hope Cash will do a better job drafting position players. I guess it’s hard, though – we’ll always be picking at the back end. Either way, I hate the notion that only superior prospects stick – outside of a couple of pitchers and Montero, we don’t have superior positon prospects. We have to be concerned at some point about replacing Jeter and Alex. I wish we had a super OF prospect as, although I like Swisher, I’m not sure I want him here beyond his contract. We need to keep some of our good/not great prospects or this team is going to become decrepit as the other teams in our division get younger.
