Some fans don’t need a live chat – they need a sedative.

  3. pat February 3rd, 2011 at 2:02 pm

“SI_JonHeyman Pettitte told people early this winter hed pitch if yanks got lee but wouldn?t if lee went else. Lee rejection a double whammy?”

It ticks me off when Heyman and Sherman write this. I would prefer to see Andy as someone who would be willing to battle with teammates and not someone who would only want to ride along with a surer thing.

  4. G. Love February 3rd, 2011 at 2:04 pm

I only brought up Zito because trying to find a lefty starter who is healthy and throws close to 200 innings a season is very difficult.

He’s owed 64.5 million over the next 3 seasons.

If you can get the Giants to eat half of that and take Igawa’s contract back, I would definitely consider it.

  5. Jerkface February 3rd, 2011 at 2:05 pm

Zito throws 85 and even if they ate half thats 10 mil a season. Might as well have signed Pavano.

The Yankees don’t feel like they need to be in a big rush to augment rotation; they have two months to evaluate own guys, look for trade

  7. brownies February 3rd, 2011 at 2:14 pm

Boston keeps winning this off season..we r destined for 2nd place and maybe wild card..maybe a playoff spot if lucky or if cashman doesn’t make a big deal before we slip out of contention by june

Let’s just hope this is true.

The evaluate own guys first part…

  10. blake February 3rd, 2011 at 2:15 pm

I would rather trade for Santana and hope he got healthy than Zito if they were doing something like that…….Zito+ AL east = bad things.

  11. mick February 3rd, 2011 at 2:16 pm

3 or 4 5 inning starts from Nova and Yanks will panic.
Better hope Colon makes the team.
Garcia is a mortal lock now.

  12. YankeesNmore February 3rd, 2011 at 2:18 pm

Per Buster Olney: “The Yankees don’t feel like they need to be in a big rush to augment rotation; they have two months to evaluate own guys…”

Great job by Cashman… Then, when the Yankees are completely buried at the end of that two months, Cashman can talk about how there is no point is trading prospects for a pitcher now that the team is out of it.

    What a GM!

PS. past time for a change.

  13. PhiltheThrill February 3rd, 2011 at 2:19 pm

Should be interesting to see what happens. Amazing that Andy pitched so much of his career in an absolutely loaded AL East, in front of many terrible defenses and still finished with an ERA under 4.

  14. blake February 3rd, 2011 at 2:20 pm

    Yankeesandmore,

Can’t you write the same thing over and over on your own blog?

  15. Jerkface February 3rd, 2011 at 2:20 pm

3 or 4 5 inning starts from Nova and Yanks will panic.

I don’t think so, why would they panic? If Nova goes 5 innings and doesn’t crap the bed that will be great.

Now 3 or 4 1-2 inning starts, or 7 ER starts.

  16. J. Alfred Prufrock February 3rd, 2011 at 2:21 pm

Santana is vulnerable the last few years to lefthanded power though.that would be concerning.

  17. Erin February 3rd, 2011 at 2:21 pm

Ledger_Yankees The announcement comes at 10:30 a.m. Already, Yankee fans referring to it as #BlackFriday.

  18. Fran the original February 3rd, 2011 at 2:21 pm

If Cashman tries to trade for a starter now, other teams will ask for too much.

  19. Doreen February 3rd, 2011 at 2:22 pm

The way I interpret it (and I could be wrong, of course), is that if the Yankees signed Lee, it would have been an easier to decision to come back, but without Lee it was a more difficult decision. I think if it was all about Lee, Andy Pettitte likely would have announced is retirement a long time ago.

  20. blake February 3rd, 2011 at 2:23 pm

    Prufrock,

My post guy more about not wanting Zito than actually wanting Santana….I would keep an eye on him if he comes back healthy and the Mets wanted shed of his salary…..he’s not owed as much as it seems and could be a really good #3 guy if he makes it from the surgery (highest era ever: 3.33)

We r not a playoff team this year. Sure we will finish well above 500 but not strong enough pitching to win season series vs the potential playoff teams

  31. Erin February 3rd, 2011 at 2:30 pm

    Fran-it’s a toss up.

I survived the blizzard. I loved having a snow day yesterday-I felt like a little kid! lol

  32. austinmac February 3rd, 2011 at 2:30 pm

The rotation is obviously questionable, but what else can be done now other than wait to see how it all looks in a month. There is no no. 3 starter anyone will trade now. These teams too have fans they need to satisfy by trying to win.

I do believe this puts playoffs in question. I know they have an offense, but it better be a better offense than they had the second half of last year when the Yankees were again short on starters. They were not a good team with Pettitte out and Burnett struggling.

I don’t think Zito is any answer. His stuff went south several years ago.

  38. john_halfz February 3rd, 2011 at 2:32 pm

Minor point, but an exaggeration by SJ44 to suggest that teams in professional sports with 4 HOF or borderline HOF players rarely come about.

The core of the Big Red Machine was together through much of the 1970s, though not sure how long Perez was in Cincinnati.

The 1927 Yankees featured 6 HOFers, all of whom put in significant contemporaneous time with the team. The shortest tenure was Hoyt’s, I believe.

The 1950s Dodgers have 5 who played for significantly all of the decade.

Of course, to take the easy way out, the Orioles of the 1970s featured 4 HOFers, if you include Weaver.

Obviously, the 1972-73 Knicks featured 5 HOFers (and 4 of the 50 greatest, I believe), though obviously Frazier, Reed, Monroe, DeBusschere, and Bradley weren’t together for that long.

Many other examples, too, of course.

  39. john_halfz February 3rd, 2011 at 2:33 pm

EDIT: Teams like that come about “rarely,” not “never.

  40. Mell February 3rd, 2011 at 2:36 pm

“Minor point, but an exaggeration by SJ44 to suggest that teams in professional sports with 4 HOF or borderline HOF players rarely come about”

Think he may have been referring to length as much as anything else. Pettitte’s brief stay in Houston aside, those guys were together for a decade and a half.

  41. SJ44 February 3rd, 2011 at 2:38 pm

Not true. No team in the history of professional team sports have had teammates play this long together.

    Look it up.

If you need further reference, go back to the SI story on the Core Four. I believe it’s also referenced in there.

  42. Fran the original February 3rd, 2011 at 2:38 pm

Wonder if YES will televise the Press Conference. Has anybody heard?

  43. SJ44 February 3rd, 2011 at 2:39 pm

    Mell,

Exactly. I’m talking years together as teammates.

I should have been clearer in the post.

  44. DaSaint007 February 3rd, 2011 at 2:39 pm

We’ve got bloggers who spend more time here than their own blog, and others who think the season is over before it starts. Why bother wake up and go to work if you know the results in advance? ROFL!

Anyway, last I checked, ST is a couple weeks away and the season doesn’t start for weeks. Plus, there are 162 games to be played. How many bright folks here picked the Rays to win the WS last season? No one, picked SF. None here. Not one.

Congrats to Pettitte on a great career. Would have absolutely loved to have you back for 1 more season, but the tugs of family and the grind of a long season can not be ignored after 16 years.

I’m soooooo looking forward to trying to win another WS with all the rotation question marks we start (and we haven’t even started) the season with.

It will be all the sweeter.

  45. Chip February 3rd, 2011 at 2:39 pm

Mets aren’t going to trade Johan

Yankees aren’t going to trade for Zito

    Some viable targets IMO:

    Myers (Hou)
    Saunders (Ari)
    Sanchez (San Fran)
    Sanchez (Fla)
    Dempster (ChC)
    Zambrano (ChC)
    Wolf (Mil)
    Hudson (Atl)
    Lowe (Atl)
    Jurrjiens (Atl)
    Maholm (Pit)
    Peavy (ChW)
    Mazarro (KC)

Based on that – a couple of proposals:

NYY get Brett Myers and Clint Barmes
Hou gets Joba, Romine and a minor leaguer

NYY get Paul Maholm and Ryan Doumit
Pitt gets Joba and a low level minor leaguer

  46. Erin February 3rd, 2011 at 2:41 pm

  49. Doreen February 3rd, 2011 at 2:41 pm

From Tom Verducci’s May 3, 2010 SI article, “So Far, So Good,” which was about the Core 4′s longevity:

“In accomplishment and longevity, the sports world has seen nothing quite like this quartet. This year, Rivera, Posada and Jeter became the first trio of teammates in any North American Sport to stay together for 16 consecutive seasons.”

The Astros just signed Wandy and Myers to new contracts. They are not trading them anytime soon.

    Doreen,

Verducci is, of course, incorrect that the four were together for 16 consecutive years. He must have slept through the Astro years.

Sad news and not helped at all by the braying of so much of LoHud’s pessimist patrol.

The transition from the Yankee heroes of the Dynasty years to the Yankee heroes of today and tomorrow continues.

I thought Andy would come back for one last go, but this is still going to be a very good team with no shortage of great players and interesting storylines.

As far as trade fodder goes, IMO, for a starting pitcher, it’s Joba, Romine and a low-level minor league arm.

  59. Joe from Long Island February 3rd, 2011 at 2:47 pm

Don’t make me read now. :) Correction noted.

With respect to Andy, I much prefer he retire than to pitch when he was physically not up to it or pitch without his heart in it. He waqsn’t sure of either in my view, and under those circumstances, he likely felt retirement was the most honorable course, ala Meche.

I don’t think any of the guys who are going to be available this season are worth dealing Montero for unless you’re getting back more than just 1 pitcher.

For example I wouldn’t trade Montero for Anibel Sanchez but if I was getting back Mike Stanton too then I would do it – but that ain’t happening.

On the ML level I would move Joba and Robertson – no question.
Depending on other factors I would (as you know) include Gardner.

    The top minor league levels:
    Eduardo Nunez
    Austin Romine
    Ivan Nova
    Hector Noesi
    David Adams

are all guys I would deal.

Cervelli, Ramiro Pena, Romulo Sanchez, Colin Curtis, Kevin Russo can all be moved but they don’t have any real value.

“Maybe the mets would want some financial relief ala wells and toronto and trade lefty santana to yankees”

If Alderson gets his way, he would absolutely do it. Santana’s contract is heavily backloaded (72 mil over the next 3 years) and Alderson said he wanted to get the payroll ‘significantly lower’. They already will be getting a ton of flexibility after this year (Beltran, K-Rod, Perez, Castillo all off the books). They will get significantly more if they unload Santana’s salary.

I doubt the Yanks would be interested though. They wouldn’t want 3 guys locked in for the next 3+ years at big money.

  72. Jerkface February 3rd, 2011 at 2:55 pm

The Yankees had 408 IP worth of 5.31 ERA from everyone except Hughes, CC, Andy, and Nova last year. I think it will be difficult to find that much suck in the back end this year.

If Garcia merely replicates his 2010 season, and Nova pitches deeper but at the same 4.50 ERA, the yankees are already ahead of the game.

    Ynks N More(on)-

The 2009 Yankees were 29-21 at the end of May….how can any team be out of it after two months. Your negative drivel is getting redundant and annoying.

Best of luck to Andy and his family. The greatest postseason starter in history has earned it.

The Yankees got a 3.61 ERA from Pettitte, Hughes, CC, and Nova in 585 innings.

Regress both samples a bit towards the middle and I think you have a realistic projection for next years staff.

    Regarding Santana–

If I understand correctly what I read about his surgery, they are actually strengthening his shoulder and that should restore his fastball and fastball/change up differential. After he recovers, he should be a very attractive pitcher.

I still believe (hope?) that Mets will be forced to move Santana and Beltran during year…and there are not many clubs who can pick up those contracts. With Andy retiring, the Yankees ability to do so (with Mets kicking in some money) just improved.

The bottom line is that our play-off hopes are still alive and it won’t be until August 31st that we see the final team that will compete in the play-offs. With out trade chip reserves, we’ll be fine.

Don’t count out the Mets moving their largest contracts, as it appears that they do want to shed more payroll. The Wilpons just don’t have the resources anymore, so why pay someone like Johan or Bay the big bucks?

It’s a salary dump waiting to happen. I can see AL teams grabbing both of those guys mid-season. Alderson is no dummy. He’ll swallow as much of their salary commensurate with the minor-league talent he’ll get back.

The Yankees have no room for all their pitching talent. Don’t think that they would pass up a chance at a healthy Johan for 3 more seasons if it meant paying only $12-$16M/year. You know, Pettitte money. Cashman would pull the trigger in a minute.

I’ll have to wear my Pettitte shirt tomorrow.
The one with him peeking over the glove, eyes rivetted on the catcher.
    Classic.

Truth be told, given the Yankees quest to win at all times and every season, any big time Yankee choosing to retire, regardless of the year, will create turmoil on the roster for the following season. It’s just one of the byproducts of maintaining a “World Series or bust” energy in the organization.

I always liked Andy. His presence in the rotation will be sorely missed. I do think, however, that we can’t blame him if the rotation struggles this year. I also can’t believe that, if an opportunity for decent starting pitching arises in the next several months, Cashman wouldn’t be all over it. It’s time to turn the page on this one and see what tomorrow brings!

“If Cashman tries to trade for a starter now, other teams will ask for too much.”
    ————————————————————————————–
As opposed to the rest of the year when other teams give away their good starters???

Or would the Yankees be better to wait a month or two into the season, let everybody see for certain how badly they need a starter. Then the price is SURE to come down.

I’ve yet to see in any of your tirades against Cashman what you would have done differently.

And no, saying “I would have signed Cliff Lee” doesn’t count because he tried to sign Cliff Lee and Cliff Lee didn’t want to sign here.

So I’ll ask again – what would you have done differently?

Instead of ranting – try answering…as you say “time for a change”

    **********************************
I’m not answering for yankeesnmore…but what i wanted cashman to do is after lee spurned the yankees was to be a bit more aggressive with looking into a trade and ACTUALLY making a concrete attempt at getting grienke……the no thought answer of “he was just too expensive for what we wanted to pay” tells me that after the royals asked for montero brian went back into his room and tried on his wig for his next gig of bartending…instead of making a counteroffer..offering romine instead of montero & 2 more decent arms in addition to one of the “b’s” and/or the centerfielder who is still 4 years away from playing and LOADS OF CASH….this was a case of prospect hugging at its best….if grienke falls on his face in NY so be it – that move was more of a sure thing than garcia or colon…..this off season of catching lightning in a bottle with colon, garcia and the rest of the sludge he’s scooped at the bottom of the barrel just ain’t cutting it…..

at least thats what i think yankeesnmore would say if he would answer you….;-)

i’m not so much upset at missing out on lee as insistance on his “patience” proclamation and doing nothing…trading for a carlos zambrano in july won’t be any cheaper – prospect wise – as it was for grienke in december….no team is going to look at the yankees and give them a discount….sure he can pick up more scrubs ala kearns and wood (wood was a scrub at the time of the trade last year – don’t let his success with the yankees fool you that he wasn’t a scrub)
