Video chat reminder
Usually, I use this time to respond to the morning’s guest post. Today, though, I’m on my way to the office for a pre-Tampa meeting and a video chat with Sam.
Don’t forget, stop by this afternoon at 12:15 and shoot a question to Sam and I. We’ll be video chatting right here on the blog, trying to touch on all of the big Yankees topics heading into spring training.
Speaking of which, we have our first Yankee-in-great-shape story of the spring. Granted, we’ve already heard a little bit about Russell Martin showing up in better shape than he was in last spring, but Buster Olney reports that CC Sabathia has dropped a whopping 30 pounds in an effort to take care of that surgically repaired knee. That’s a big change for the big man. Good for him.
Don’t forget. 12:15. Video chat. See you then!
UPDATE, 11:24 a.m.: One more thing, Jon Morosi just reported that the Yankees have agreed to a minor league deal with Luis Ayala. Looks like more bullpen depth for Scranton.

I don’t think there’s any chance Cashman gets fired after this year – unless the Yankees completely bottom out and finish third or fourth in the division.
Hal loves the guy – has a ton of faith in him and won’t be quick to make a change.
Could Cashman walk away with his contract expiring after this season? Sure I suppose that’s possible.
I’m more concerned with what Sabathia will do. I know he has said time and again that he won’t opt out of his contract, but until we actually pass the opt out date I’m going to keep my fingers crossed.

“They won a WS in 2009, they have a Top Five farm system, and another very good team this year.”
I’d say the original statement was premised on the Yanks not making the post-season, which renders the “very good team” comment not applicable.
Cashman has had three years in total charge, his contract will be up, and Girardi’s new contract just starting.
In the dust and ashes of a non-Yankee post-season, things will look very different.

In the case of Chamberlain, it’s been seen too many times when he comes in from the pen, gets 2 quick strikes with good velocity, then starts to nibble with a slider in the dirt with the hitters knowing what’s coming. It becomes the start of a bad inning in many instances.
He needs to trust his catchers more along with trusting his stuff.

Great, will do.
Chad,
May I suggest a way for spicing up the video chat, driving more traffic to the blog and turning yourselves into internet legends?
At some point in the chat, act like you’re not feeling well and walk off camera.
Then, while off camera, put on a werewolf mask and leap back on camera and attack Sam and have a bunch of people in the background scream, “Oh My God! No!” and then let the feed go dead.
Then since Sam will presumably survive the attack, you can both be werewolves next week and beyond. I know I would love a Yankee Werewolf video chat.
Just a thought.
Fran the original,
What type of league is it?

Doubtful.
If Cashman’s not with the Yankees next year it will be because he walked away – not because he was fired.
Doreen, watch a couple minutes of Bob and Doug McKenzie. If you don’t laugh the woman will at least seem sane.
It even has something about babe Ruth in it.

Since I was premising the argument on the Yanks not making the post-season, and since second place in the AL East has usually made the post-season, I don’t think you are even thinking about what you arguing about.
There is no evidence things will look different.
Hal Steinbrenner has not shown himself to be an impetuous guy and the Steinbrenner Family really likes the guy.
It’s highly unlikely he gets fired if they miss the playoffs.
In fact, the evidence suggests the opposite.
Hal has come out publicly supporting Cashman and we haven’t seen any leaks attempting to place blame on Cashman for the off-season.
Bill Madden tried his best to find something to no avail.
Unless there is a complete breakdown in realtionships/communication during the season, it’s more likely Cashman signs a new deal.
Chip I have a trade scenario for you…and since Chad isn’t taking any pictures of how fat joba is – trade scenarios is all i have to go on right now..
If you’re the yankee Gm and the dodgers call you and say they’ll trade you clayton kershaw for robbie cano straight up would you do that?
if yes would you then try and trade for michael young or would you go in another direction?
if you’d trade for young who are you giving up?
thanks..
BrianCoz Joba just talked to us. Now that I’ve seen him up close he does look better but he’s not huge #yankees

Guess we jumped the gun on Joba being a fat shlub.
“Hal has come out publicly supporting Cashman and we haven’t seen any leaks attempting to place blame on Cashman for the off-season. ”
Oh golly an owner has never publicly supported a GM they later let go. Sounds definitive to me.

Cashman needs to go,
I would do that deal in a second. I would always trade a top hitter for a top pitcher.
jonmorosi Ayala closed for Mexico, who won the Caribbean Series. So the #Yankees are getting someone who is throwing well right now. #NY #MLB

Well, what’s changed?
Your assertion is, “things have changed”.
Yet, you have offered nothing to show how things have changed.
Instead of getting snarky, tell us how, in your opinion, “things have changed”.
Thanks, pat. I only asked because of the “from a distance” remarks about Chamberlain.
long range weather for Fla this spring is for dry & warm
Jesus….more of the “Cashman did nothing over the winter, he’s a bum” posts? and, still, nobody has come up with legitimate trades/signings he could or would do that would improve the Yankees.
The fact that Cashman has been able to build a top 10 farm system in a relatively short period of time without ever having high picks is more important big picture than what the Yankees do in 2011. Of course the Yanks will do everything they can to win this season but setting the club up for longterm health should be and is the ultimate goal…..the way MLB is trending the changes Cash has made in the last few years are going to be key to their success year in year out.
BTW, with a week to go before ST…..Im going to report NOT in the best shape of my life for sure.

I for one wanted the Big Z here, but since the Cubs traded a SP that idea is out
Cash isn’t getting fired. The only jobs he would leave the Yankees for are filled.
eboland11 Martin now high-stepping in OF. Seems to have come through his squatting just fine
AnthonyMcCarron Cervelli taking grounders at 3rd
This tells me Jesus is a long shot for the opening day roster. It also probably forecloses a comeback by Eric Chavez.

Pete’s video chats used to be sponsored by Friedrich air conditioners.
Someone once asked him to lift an air conditioner over his head. That seemed like it had publicity stunt potential.
He skipped right over that question, unfortunately.
is Eric Chavez.there ?
Maybe we will see Montero get called up June 2012.
Cervelli taking grounders at third base says nothing but that he’s taking grounders at third base. He did it last year and he did it in the minors. Not likely that Chavez is getting cut before ST starts.
Don’t know if Chavez is there. Just my opinion that, if Cervelli can play both 3B and C, he’ll be more likely to be on the roster since he is well like by Girardi and Cashman. Plus, if they want to move him later in the season, they need to showcase him somewhat….plus he might be out of options.
Ohlendorff wins arbitration case. Will they now trade him?
But you’re right GB, maybe I’m reading too much into it.

No I wouldn’t trade Cano for Kershaw
I’m not sure who I would trade Cano for – Pujols certainly. King Felix probably.
But assuming that the Yankees did trade Cano – I don’t think Young can still play 2b.
Somebody wrote recently that Cashman is the type of executive that you would really start to appreciate once you saw his replacement in action.
And I’m not his biggest fan but I agree with that.
New Post: Video chat begins at 12:15
The Yankee hierarchy is not aloof of what Cashman has been doing since given broader responsibility as the health of George Steinbrenner was declining.
They’re fully aware of how the farm system has shown fruition after so many years of it being stripped. They’re also aware of 2011 and 2012 being a less than stellar free agent class and how some of the sterling prospects with reach the major leagues on or about 2012 and in some cases sooner.
Cashman’s job is not in jeopardy regardless of how the 2011 season fares.
