Long expects big things from A-Rod, plus other notes
Two years ago, the Yankees best hitter was Mark Teixeira. Last year, it was Robinson Cano. Could it be Alex Rodriguez’s turn again in 2011?
“We talk about Cano as obviously one of the best players in the game,” Kevin Long told ESPNNewYork. “Alex had more home runs and drove in more runs in five less weeks. So if Cano’s considered one of the best, what’s Alex considered? I think there’s still plenty of production there.”
In his story, Wally Matthews mentioned Rodriguez’s ugly splits against left-handers last season. Long is well aware of the numbers, and so is Rodriguez.
“I just said to him, ‘Lefties,’” Long said. “And he said, ‘I know.’”
A few more links from today.
• Speaking of Yankees coaches, Larry Rothschild has inherited a thin rotation with uncertainty at the top (A.J. Burnett) and uncertainty at the bottom (the competition for No. 4 and 5). Rothschild thinks Burnett is on the right track, and he’s happy with what he’s seen from Ivan Nova. “Nova’s certainly a young kid with good enough stuff,” he said.
• Rothschild also talked today about the state of the Yankees bullpen.
• Over at FanGraphs, Dave Cameron wrote about the possibility of the Yankees making a trade for Francisco Liriano.
• Over at ESPN.com, Buster Olney wrote about Brewers closer John Axford, who spent one largely forgotten year in the Yankees minor league system.

Chad do I get a Reeses PBC for uncertainty? Thin works too.
Joeman
Minny system is stacked on OF.
They need middle infielders and pitching.
I will probably judge the success of the upcoming season based on trades not made.
Is that what Red Sox fans like you do Rich? Being a Yankee fan, I judge success by World Championships won. Hang in there.
Yes, troll.
Good grief, the “please no insults” mask has completely dropped.
This Yankees camp should be one of the most interesting in years with so many pitchers competing for two starting positions. Then you have the catching situation as well. Cannot wait!
You’re one sharp guy Nick.
‘Too bad you can’t package boredom and yawns Rich’.
============
WCYF: And don’t forget those all important, critical sabermetrics. Heaven forbid !
somebody was joking on the last thread about igawa making the rotation. does anyone know if he’s even being brought in to camp? i know he got sent out with the first group last year and he’s not on the 40 man anymore…just curious.
Vineyard who wins the 4 and 5 spots; what does your gut tell you?
“WCYF: And don’t forget those all important, critical sabermetrics. Heaven forbid !”
You’re proud of being fact-averse?
YS: That was no joke , just poor sad attempts at droll humor. Good question though I would think yes based on the money they pay him to do nothing but take up space.
Nick
Stop playing your childish word games!
Please no insults is just a random collection of letters that don’t express any particular message.
you know what i really hated about west….after he’d hit that shot that took all the air out of the garden, you’d notice as he headed back up the court that his hair was still perfect…..
WCYF: I will say Nova and one of the other AAA guys, someone will emerge with a great camp. After all every time Meat – Tray gets a chance he shoots himself in the foot.
Nick in SF…..Did you see my comment about Cal tonight ???? Bears plus 13.5 is to good to be true
YS: He has lots of stock in Revlon Hair Care Products, not one hair out of place or even sweaty. Amazing.
I have no issue with statistics or computer assisted advances that help to evaluate players. I think they are way overused by many and are inherently flawed as they don’t adequately factor in a myriad of human elements that can never be quantified. They also detract from the art and poetry of the game which ultimately is what makes baseball so great. Watch Ken Burns “Baseball” which as far as I know doesn’t mention war except in the context of the players that actually went to war.
YS gUY…Are you talking about the half court shot in 70 ??? That was at The Forum
Yes, Pat M, and based on your advice I bet three kidneys on the game… Cal is trailing by 31 right now… I’m a bit concerned.
I remember that shot it was about 1AM or so.
So cool thinking about that Knick team! One of my favorite moments was against the Cincinnati Royals when the Knicks came back on the road after trailing by 5 points with 16 seconds left on the clock to set a new NBA record for consecutive wins at 18. Wow!
WCYF:
You talk to GS lately ?
Vineyard. Vanished.
Off to watch some b-ball. Later.
WCYF: Dave DeBusschere was my favorite on that team.
WC
What story do you use as your reason for being a Yankees fan?
Unsurprising WCRSF bails when asked about the origins of his Yankee fandom
Lakers beat the Celtics; Dallas and Melo next.
I have no idea why I even answer you LGY, charity I suppose. Maybe growing up in New York City and going to maybe a hundred games at the Stadium might have something to do with it. Go figure huh?
Must be a new book in the works huh ?
VY,
So Freddie Garcia doesn’t make the team?
Once again Smith will try to make this deal so unfair if he is going to work with Cashman at all. Just like all other GM’s do, they expect NY to give up literally the whole farm system for a guy with any talent at all.
A week after Cashman shuts the door on talks with Billy Smith and the Twins they will deal him to the Cardinals for Ryan Theriot and some “can’t miss” prospect.
Bunch of B.S.
If I had a crystal ball I would say no, but who really knows. I’m pulling for Prior but I think Cashman and Company are going to take a long look at their home grown stock and plan from there.
These retread guys like Garcis, Colon, Mitre etc. are guys to eat innings and the X factor is always injuries.
typo: that would be Garcia, Colon………………………tec.
“Maybe growing up in New York City and going to maybe a hundred games at the Stadium might have something to do with it. Go figure huh?”
—————
What’s your success rate with that story?
I think you need to spice it up a bit to make it more believable.
Huskies hit for over 50 points from 3 point land, holy crap…..Sorry Nick in SF, I didn’t lose 3 kidneys but I did lose 2….Unless UCLA covers 8.5 I’ll be drowning in red ink tonight…..
Apropos of discussing Groupon last night:
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02.....nted=print
How far back would I have to read so everything in this thread would make sense?
If I didn’t know better I’d say someone is trying to stir the pot.
I don’t know, they picked up a lot of retreads and will likely use the one with the least wear.
The Yankees have almost always gone with veteran players over kids given the choice in the past.
pat,
I am not sure any amount of reading back would make this thread make sense.
LGY
OK. I was feeling like the only one at the party who isn’t stoned.
Just look for m’s posts, and you’re good.
I think they’ll really beef up the pen to back up the rotation. The back end of the rotation will be on a short leash IMO
New policy:
I’m no longer communicating with anybody in here directly unless I know their approximate age and whereabouts for Dave Righetti’s perfect game.
I got Nick placed at The Dakota somewhere in the early-mid 80′s so he’s good.
The rest of you? :silencemoticon:
I thought it was me, since I’m half asleep here.
I was booing Wade Boggs.
m:
Meaning that when I said Cashman & Co. will take a long look at their home grown prospects to know how far out they are from the show.
They may well go the veteran route with the retreads they picked up as a stop gap measure, the problem I really have with these guys is they are an accident looking for a place to happen just like Nick ‘The Sick’ Johnson.
I hope one of the AAA guys is just lights out this spring forcing a decision from the Yankee brain trust.
I think one AAA (Nova) guy is enough for me right now. However, I do sleep better at night knowing that we have some terrific depth in the system. Pitching is always risky, regardless of pedigree. The DL is an equal opportunity evil.
Nice of Hamilton to let the Rangers off the hook on signing a two year deal. He should’ve forced their hand in arbitration.
Pat
I was trying to figure it out myself. So far I have come up with
Somewhere GB is laughing his a@@ off at Rich and WCYF going at it.
Nick and Pat m donated kidneys. ( for entertainment purposes only)
Wcyf and vinyard are having conversations with himself.
And Rich is apparently a mind reader since minutes before his post I signed up for Groupon.
j/k
Well, Tar, I’ll clarify that for you:
I don’t like people that habitually diss Cash and laud the RS on a Yankee blog.
Jeers,
I actually missed that game by 1 day. My Dad worked for Chemical Bank back then and we got primo seats right up against the infield. We also got so badly sunburned at that game that none of us were in any condition to go the next day thus missing Righetti’s no hitter.
We also missed the Pine Tar game by 1 game as well having gone the game before. I don’t remember why we didn’t go the next game. I just remember we had tickets and stayed home.
Federal prosecutors dropped half the charges they had filed against Barry Bonds?
The way those legal proceedings are going, Barry will be exonerated and the prosecutors will be put in jail before this thing is over.
If Alex is healthy, he’s going to be huge……..but that’s a big IF
Bronx Jeers,
That was about 4 years before I was born.
All the more reason that either everyone or no one should be kept out of the HoF for PED usage.
It’s either unprovable with a sufficient degree of certainty, or it’s not universally detectable, or there have selective leaks that have unfairly singled out players because some people have an agenda.
Jeers,
Re: That game……..
I was dating someone at the time who wanted me to go to her parents 4th of July party that year.
The parents werent keen on me and vice versa. Buy, I agreed to go.
Two days before the 4th, my buddy gets two tickets for that game.
Morning of the 4th, I call my GF and tell her I feel awful and can’t make the party. She tells me to take it easy and don’t worry about it.
“Feeling better”, my buddy and I head to Yankee Stadium.
I end up seeing my first, and still only, no hitter witnessed in person.
We head back to my place feeling on top of the world.
I get to my door….and I find a tin of eggplant parm smashed against my door.
Seems that my GF came by with a “care package” to help her sick BF.
Unfortunately, a door that did nothing wrong, took the brunt of her anger.
I explained to her the next day the rarity of seeing a no hitter in person and how that should trump a holiday that will return next year.
Needless to say, that excuse didn’t go over well and she dumped me. Saying, “My father was right about you”.
Personally, I think her father was a Red Sox fan.
I made out ahead on the deal.
Rich
Thanks, but I really was just kidding.
The Groupon thing was strange, I just signed up, came on here and read your post.
Jeers
Strangely, I don’t remember. It’s all a blur. Which is probably a good indicator of my age.
Rich
I was reading earlier today that there is now a Latino Hall of Fame in the Dominican Republic.
That HOF might have more interesting induction ceremonies in the next 10 years than Cooperstown will.
I watched the no hitter, but I have no idea where I was….at home probably.
Is that Snooki or Ruby Tuesday on Letterman. Aw shucks probably one in the same. LOL
Tyyanksfan, You’re exempt. It’s not your fault you weren’t alive.
G. Love, Unlucky timing. That sucks. Bad times for the Yanks but they were fun for us right?
Rich in NJ, You’re still suspect. For all we know you were just mourning the loss of Carney Lansford.
SJ……What a waste of Eggplant Parm…Anyone who would perform sacrilege on just a classic dish doesn’t have a place in one’s life……In reality you dumped her by hitting the Stadium…..
Bronx Jeers
I didn’t even realize that Lansford played for the RS. Looking a Baseball-Reference, I see it was in ’81-’82, which if you view that in the context of pat’s earlier comment that “… I was feeling like the only one at the party who isn’t stoned,” probably explains it, because I was never, ever the only one not stoned during those years, be it at a party, or not at a party.
More seriously, I watched the game on TV at my ‘rents house in NJ.
SJ,
That’s hysterical.
Sounds like you chose Righetti over spaghetti. There’s certainly no shortage of Italian food but witnessing a no-hitter may come once n a lifetime.
“I was never, ever the only one not stoned during those years, be it at a party, or not at a party.”
This really doesn’t make much sense. It could be flashbacks. What I am trying to say was that I smoked a lot of pot back then.
My mom was looking through our old photo albums and found a picture of me when I was 6 yrs old at a Cincinnati Reds Spring Training game. According to my dad, we went to their Spring Training games until Legends Field opened. I don’t ever remember going to those Cincinnati ST games.
Yeah it took a couple of reads to decipher.
I think I tried to get stoned in 84′ but I didn’t know how. But then I got better.
I took a wrong turn and ended up on the High Times Yankee Blog.
Nick in SF…….These folks need to sample some of our Cali Med menu items……..UCLA ecks out the cover….I’m still reeling over the fact that The Huskies put up 51 points on 3 pointers…..
Good Morning Morning People…….
“I don’t like people that habitually diss Cash and laud the RS on a Yankee blog.”
Those types have infested the NYYFans site. We have to prevent the same from happening here.
Good morning, morning people.
Bronx Jeers -
You’re not going to like this answer, but I was still a Mets fan back in ’83. I have admitted to that before on this blog, though, so it’s not like I have been hiding a deep dark secret, right? Thing is, my husband probably watched that game, or parts of it. He’s always been a Yankee fan (and finally succeeded in bringing me over from the dark side). I’m trying to think of where we were. We were married just shy of 3 years and my sister was getting married later that month. Most likely we were at a backyard bbq at my parents’ house. But baseball, be it Mets or Yankees, was not a huge part of my life back then. I did, however, know who Dave Righetti was, if that helps.
I am probably also one of a handful who grew up in the 70s who never, and I mean NEVER smoked pot. Ever. Had never even seen it or been close to it until 1977 (I was 19). My mom had remarried and while they were on their honeymoon, my stepbrother had a party at the house. I had been out with my boyfriend and didn’t know this was going to happen and I walked into this party, with my sister and stepbrothers and some of their friends. I was dumbfounded and when they asked if I wanted to partake, I just walked out. It was not something I was ever tempted or curious to try. I didn’t care that other people did, I just never expected it in our home. Clearly, I was not in Kansas anymore!
It’s still a life experience I’ve never had and won’t. Though there have been days lately….
****
i was 23 and home on leave from the navy and heard the game on the radio at mom’s house. and i’ve never smoked pot. or bought it. (from those guys in the back row of the bleachers back in the day) or grow it (hydroponically or in dirt) indoors (hps or mih lamps) or outdoors (behind the barn and back up on that hill behind the house, and NEVER, NEVER on federal land in the green mountain national forest.
just wanted to be clear about that.
oh and if i did, the statute of limitations must have run out by now
for most of it
Life is tough on a blog when you express your opinion and not bo riding the bandwagon all the time.
typo: s/b….not be
vy i read your post above about the veterans the yankees brought in looking for a place to break down, but actually that’s not that bad a scenario for the yankees. i think that by the asb you will have ‘graduated’ brackman from aaa, and it will be time for noesi and mitchell to put up for the big leagues, or move aside and make room for manny and delllin.
i think we are still maybe a year from being able to fill spots with stud minor leaguer’s and we probably only have a pitching shortage till july or april. after that we start into a pitching surplus.
good morning early birds…I just skipped to the bottom, am I missing anything worth going back for?
I remember Righetti’s no hitter. He was a favorite of mine, a Guidry replacement. Anyone remember the Prince spaghetti commercials? It a Righetti spaghetti?
plus, i think we all expect cash money to pick up a good arm by the trade deadline
Ys Guy -
Thanks for the morning laugh!
Time to Make the Donuts. Catch you guys later.
“I’m no longer communicating with anybody in here directly unless I know their approximate age and whereabouts for Dave Righetti’s perfect game.”
I was 3. That was the day my family moved into our home in Jersey. I was most likely crying/cowering in fear outside my room because my room had formerly been the place the former owner kept his stuffed trophies that he had shot and killed. The one time I saw it there was a giant bear in there. It scared the crap out of me.
upstate kate -
I do remember the Righetti commercials. They were so cute! The “Righetti Spaghetti.” Yup.
I was half asleep last night, but decided to skim through the blog anyway last night. It was hard to follow.
d, you have to be high to follow the left-coasters….
Tom in NJ -
Ouch! He stuffed the whole bear??????
I had an uncle who hunted and there were deer heads mounted in their home and I hated visiting there and I was very, very afraid of him. In my mind he looked like an old mountain man – he was big and very Nordic looking, but not in the Bjorn Borg way – more like Eric the Red.
Ys Guy -
Sure seems like it sometimes…
YS: Not exactly a place to break down. These retread projects are aging veterans who have already broken down more than once and now they have been signed by the NYY’s because we are in desperate need of bodies to fill the back end of the rotation. Hanging on for a paycheck is about the size of it.
I think that Cash and Girardi don’t want to push our AAA guys until they are ready which is why they brought in these scrap heap guys. Who knows one could surprise, I’m hoping that one of the AAA is just lights out this ST and gets one of the SP slots.
The track record of the retreads makes me think of Nick Johnson. ( Guys who can’t stay healthy )
yeah, but they brought those guys in at almost no cost and whoever has nothing left wont make it to mid march. and garcia isnt great, but can throw alot of innings.
if they get 12-15 starts out of that group in the 1st half, that might be all they need.
Good morning everyone.
Just skimmed through. I, too, have never smoked pot, remember Dave Rightetti and his no-hitter and I’m ready for spring training to begin.
There, I think I’m all caught up
typo: s/b….one of the AAA guys.
its -8 with a biting wind-chill this a.m. i put on the coonskin hat and gloves just to roll out the trash barrels!
fran, im in the league and i deleted the other invitation, thanks again!
wow that is cold Ys Guy, we have 10 degrees this am, which is bad enough. We need Tyanks to post more pix of green grass.
Hi Vineyard Yankee, you are up early!
kate, im in rensselaer county, where r u?
Y’s guy, I saw. Glad you’re joining us. Should be fun.
I am stopping at 14 teams. Waiting for the last 2 invites to be accepted.
Stay warm.
So, I guess I’m going to host Guess the LineUp against this season.
I’ll start with a couple of spring training games to get our feet wet, and will let you all know exactly which games we’ll guess the lineup for.
The rules will be a little stricter this season, insofar as the time window for submitting lineups.
More information will follow.
St Lawrence Co, about as far north in NY as you can be and not be in Canada
YAY Doreen
I agree the no or low cost option is nice but in Garcia’s case over the last 4 years he has pitched 58 IP in ’07, 15 IP in ’08, 56 IP in ’09 and 157 IP in ’10 no risk, possible nice upside. I just don’t see it, but again ST may yet make a believer out of me.
With the log jam of AAA guys and Banuelos and Betances at AA I would like to see the tree bear some fruit before any of these promising prospects might be traded. I believe Cash will stick to his patience plan and follow through. We shall soon see.
“Life is tough on a blog when you express your opinion and not bo riding the bandwagon all the time.”
It depends on who’s bandwagon you’re really on.
kate, you’re one of those, eh?
ok this is weird, its 10 in watertown, 8 in maplewood, nj and -8 in rensselaer, halfway between them…
Thanks Doreen
Between GTLU and fantasy baseball, we’ll certainly all be kept busy. And have a lot of fun too.
Hi Kate:
Yup, I got that can’t sleep thing going, went to bed at 10 then up at 3 woopie ! It is a balmy 31 here now ( I know, please don’t throw rocks at me ! ) Hope you are doing well with the cold and such.
Harold Reynolds is such a Yankee Hater.;)

i absolutly disagree about harold, he’s not a hater at all, and he just calls them as he sees them. and he’s a clown so dont take what he says so seriously, he is pure entertainment.
Good morning, morning people
cashman said the same thing harold did.
oh, ok that semicolon was a winkie wasn’t it….
Fran:
Wow !, what a chore and to think I thought my plate was full with 6 last year.
VY
31 is cold for you guys. Our weather is just typical winter weather…I am not especially a winter person, but it is what it is.
Thanks for the link Craw. I am a HR fan. He is a Cash and Jeter supporter. I really don’t mind that the sox are being so over hyped, it will be just that more satisfying to beat them!
Doreen-
You knew you would give in.
Kate:
31 was nice and two of my dog pack didn’t seem to mind as they went into the creek about 45 mins ago when we went out for a stroll. They came back in and went back to bed. LOL !
Ys:
So you are up somewhere near Albany ?
Erica -
Yes.
:sigh:
But I’m hoping to take a page from your book this year. No More Mrs. Nice Guy.
yes im 13 miles SE of albany about halfway to the mass border. this is my cottage, i spend half of my time in maplewood, nj at my gf’s house.
I almost took a job at St. Lawrence University
Doreen-
LOL.
I can give you “not nice lessons” if you want.
My patience has gone out the window lately.
Yesterday, a group of us ordered chinese for someone’s birthday. I ordered chicken and brocolli and brown rice. One woman (not really a friend of mine) got “confused” and ate my brown rice instead of the fried rice she ordered. I mean really… how do you not tell the difference???
I don’t expect everyone to be smart. But I would just settle for them not eating my lunch.
I kept my self-control and just gave her the stink eye for the rest of the meal
Tom
SLU is the only local college that I have not graduated from (or even taken classes at) in my extensive college career!

LoL. Personally, I think that’s very fair.

oh, ok that semicolon was a winkie wasn’t it….
From the Reynolds interview:
When your biggest question is whether Josh Beckett is going to bounce back, you’re in good shape.
__
Ellsbury, Drew, M’zaka, Pap, and Ortiz v. LHP are all big questions, as is whether or not Crawford’s 2010 season was indicative of the player he will be for the next few years, or was it an outlier.
Harold Reynolds is a good baseball analyst with no Yankee bias. However, he is limited in his knowledge of players especially prospects in the minors and amateur ranks.

I have a boss who is very generous and is always bringing in treats…however he thinks anything in the fridge is fair game. We have to hide our food that we don’t want to share.
Rich,
Somebody has to be the favorite and I rather it be them.
Erica-
I also meant to express my sympathy on the loss of your much loved Ernie cup.
The toe will heal. The gaping hole left in your heart by it’s destruction must be difficult to deal with.

Don’t even get me started on the office fridge.
Someone had a half filled cup of soda they decided to freeze straw and all. I dumped it after 6 days on the grounds that I was probably doing a public service for them when considering the amount of bacteria probably accumulating in that straw.
PS- Bags of frozen veggies are excellent to hide food in
Erica-
If I were Kate I’d go for the total office boycott.
No food in the fridge for a week.
Starve him out.
Craw
True. Some people point to the edge the RS have in the rotation, but there are actually a lot of parallels. CC and Lester are very good. Bucholz had a better year than Hughes, but he’s two years older and was ahead in development. Hughes could be as good or better. AJ and Beckett are both big questions (AJ has the edge in health, but Beckett has had more good years). Freddy Garcia’s ERA+ was 94 last season, while M’zaka’s was 93. They get an edge with Lackey, but his ERA+ was only 99, so he’s actually another question in terms of being more than league average.
He really doesn’t raid our stuff very often. And whenever we have meetings of any kind, he always orders extra food for us, so it is hard to complain…unless the food you had planned on having for lunch is missing!
Kate-
As the Bible says, ” A sandwich for a sandwich, a meal for a meal”.
However, I also seem to recall it saying something like “let he who is w/o sin cast the first stone”.
So there is that.
You know, in the last couple of days, I’ve dealt with a lot of bad stuff at work. In the news, there’s awful stuff coming out of Egypt, and the Middle East. The nation’s economy is not as strong as we’d like. There’s so much anger in the world.
Thank goodness for baseball. Spring training, and the optimism it inspires, can’t come soon enough. Spring training is the strongest sign from on high that the world should go on.

More babies are born after War ends than at any other time.

Got caught on the wrong end of a big surprise.
If I hadn’t trained myself to smile like a Mexican boxer after he’s hit by a full on Right I’d be in serious trouble.
Fortunately, I have.
Joe from Long Island -
Amen.
I hope things will be better for you personally at work.
Wow, MTU – sorry that you’ve also had a bad week.
It seems to be epidemic. I’ve had better days myself. On my part, I can look forward to the agita for the next 7 months. Only the severity and frequency during that time will vary.
So, GTLU, Fantasy Baseball, going to Disney, Yankee baseball and rmore regulated visits here are the order of the day!
Also shopping. Shopping seems to help.
Four more days until the pitchers & catchers go through their 1st workouts of 2011.
Doreen-
Maybe so. Or maybe it’s just our turn again.
Sorry to hear it’s afflicted you too.
If I’m lucky my unfortunate surprise will be over after today.
It’s a damned good thing I have trained myself not to panic when things go awry.
MTU -
I’d imagine it’s just our turn again. The world and it’s problems goes round and round.
It’s good you don’t panic. My adrenaline tends to run rampant.

Yup. That’s the way I see it. Everyone takes their turn on the real life game of Wheel of fortune. Never know when you’re # is gonna be called. Only can control your reaction.
Have to run soon. Catch you later.
