Welcome to spring training

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Feb 14, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Beautiful morning here at Steinbrenner Field.

The clubhouse opens in about 10 minutes. Joe Girardi will address the media at 11 a.m. ET. Today is all about getting the formalities out of the way. No workouts today. Just pitchers and catchers getting their physicals, moving into their lockers and going home.

For the media, this day is largely about saying hello to the players. Most of today’s news — barring something unexpected in the clubhouse — will come from Girardi.

It’s a bright, sunny day. The grass is sparkling green. The infield is perfectly manicured. This is Day 1.

Time for Bartolo Colon, Freddy Garcia, Sergio Mitre and Ivan Nova to start cranking it up.

How exciting… for the rest of the American League.

Brian Cashman, when asked about Joba Chamberlain’s hold on a major league roster spot: “Anybody who has [minor league] options is not a lock for anything…”

Way to go, Brian! True, MANY Yankees fans have been screaming for that mindset for TWO YEARS NOW, but glad to see you finally figured it out for yourself.

Few things in this world can quite match what this week is about. Almost like a new lease on life itself. A fresh start with baseballs with MLB logos landing in gloves.
Catchers taking batting practice after drilling in fundamentals and catching bullpen sessions in a 7-mound bullpen.
Like a song that’s been stuck in your head since last October and you can finally sing it in
a state-of-the-art baseball field with the exact dimensions of Yankee Stadium.

one thing that the twins accomplished by trading santana to the mets was making sure that santana wouldn’t end up with the yankees in a trade.even now santana will not be coming to the yankees.

the twins do seem to play the yankees more often than not in the playoffs.

why should they make trades with the yankees who they are likely to face in the playoffs?

do the red sox trade with the yankees? the rays?why should the twins?

i think it’s a waste of time for cashman to even talk to the twins simply because it’s no more to their advantage to trade with the yankees than it is for the red sox or rays. for anyone to even look at the possibilities of a trade is also just a waste of time.

sure the twins will make a trade if it’s lopsided in their direction, but cashman isn’t going to do that nor would we want him to.

the twins did do a trade with the rays with garza, but the rays are not as likely to come back and bite them in the playoffs though it could happen. that trade that looked so lopsided after a year, now isn’t looking so bad as delmon young put up an offensive year comparable to arod with an ops+ of 121.( arod at 123) .

i think the yankees shouldn’t waste their time trying to fleece the twins. if anything it’ll be the other way around if they trade.

it’s water over the dam now going into the season with a lot of uncertainty in the rotation. the yankees now need to focus on getting 110% out of what they have. garcia and nova may be fine if the offense is a juggernaut. with the offensive players they have and a supposedly great hitting instructor, why shouldn’t they get back to 2009 levels and get well over 900 runs.

if they do that, a thin rotation is not going to stop 95 wins+.

  40. GreenBeret7 February 14th, 2011 at 9:52 am

I only read it as Sabathia being tired of the same question and wants to put it to rest. If he repeated it word for word, it would sound more rehearsed than fact.

  41. Cashmoney February 14th, 2011 at 9:55 am

Kuroda… When the D flops and Mattingly fails miserably in first manager job anywhere (all hypothetical), He is the best and prolly cheapest in terms of prospect to go after. But the… that won’t happen til July. Let’s see what we go first.

    //////

if santana comes back in june and throws well, he will be on the block at the trade deadline. (i know the mets are saying he’ll be back after the asb, but he’s already throwing) if that happens, he could end up on the yankees.

    Randy —

The Twins were more than happy to make a deal with the Yanks with Santana but the Yanks wouldn’t meet their price. IF they decide to deal Liriano they will take whatever they feel is the best package, period.

Only an imbecile would refuse to make the best deal possible over a possible post-season match up. It’s not even close to the same reluctance that goes with trading within a division.

d espn just published thier first mock draft for this year this past weekend. google it and you’ll be able to copy and paste it into word and print it.

as for advice, it a big thing people miss is how to follow thier projected stats while drafting. you dont want to end up winninn in strikouts by 125K’s. ideally you want to win each category by 1. in fact, i try to estimate what the final #’s for each category will be and aim for what i think would put me in 10th place (in a 12 team 5×5 league). that would give you 100 points which puts you right there in first or within points of the lead. let some other idiot pay to win the steal category by 50 steals while you are shoring up your runs category.

i have 2 or 3 more advanced tips which i could give you but i’d have to kill everybody on the board.

gb might help me out there…

Just googled some archived stuff and it came back to me that Hughes was indeed offered to the Twins. Also see that Boston, at one point, was including Lester in a package. Looks like Smith was trying to play them off of each other and both bowed out. Wonder if Pohlad made him send him to the NL, because he clearly could have done better.

  76. Chip February 14th, 2011 at 10:29 am

Funny story from Buster Olney about a minor league run-in with Deion Sanders. The only time I can remember a player being angry and confronting me about it, the story in question — a blog post actually — had been misinterpreted by a family member, who told the player that I was pushing for the Yankees to release him. This was in spring training a few years ago, the player was new to the team, and he’s just been sent down from big league camp. The whole thing got sorted out pretty quickly, and he actually became a go-to guy in the clubhouse, but in that moment, he was not pleased

Buster tells that story every year – a subtle reminder of just how cool Buster thinks he is.

  77. Cashmoney February 14th, 2011 at 10:29 am

Ys , it’s a twelve teams league with head to head match up every week. what u saying make sense. I just wonder if it make sense to establish dominance in majority of categories while leave a few categories as ‘give up’ to ensure I win the weekly match up.

“Because Bill Smith is a moron.”

    patrick-

it’s amusing to me how so many yankee fans think the twins management is dumb yet they get to the playoffs most years even though they don’t draft high. also terry ryan is still involved as an advisor. he’s an astute former gm. they simply are not going to help the yankees unless the yankees overpay considerably for what they get from the twins.

if this isn’t true, name a trade the twins have made with the yankees where the yankees have helped themselves.

liriano is not going to happen unless the yankees get fleeced.

the yankees are in a situation of their own making with pitching. the twins are not going to rescue them. matter of fact, they’re hoping it gets worse. the reality is that the yankees need to focus on their strengths which is everything but starting pitching.

they have to turn around the dramatic decrease in runs scored in 2010. 60-70 more runs will do a lot to cover up for a thin rotation.

  79. Ys Guy February 14th, 2011 at 10:30 am

fran, i was with you the first year now i expect to see some progress since i was gone…

i love seeing the rookies develop…

  80. Patrick February 14th, 2011 at 10:31 am

Wow if the Twins had done that trade for Lester or Hughes they would be in really good shape right now. Sucks for them I guess? hahahaha

On the CC opt out thing, it’s just not a big deal. The Yankees know he will most likely opt out and they have the money to keep him. It’s not like he hates playing for the team and wants to leave ASAP. The only reason he’d opt out is to maximize his earnings. He very obviously likes the Yankees.

  81. Joe from Long Island February 14th, 2011 at 10:32 am

Randy – I think you might be right about the Twins. They may well be preoccupied by the Yankees and all those losses. Can’t really blame them.

Ron gardenhire may have a complex after these years, lol

  82. 86w183 February 14th, 2011 at 10:32 am

That doesn’t mean he knowingly accepted less. Most thought he got a good package the day of the deal. Turned out otherwise, obviously

I refuse to believe anyone trading outside his division would ever knowingly take less in a trade just to spite some other team.

Folks here tend to over-value Yankees prospects, thus the assumption there is a “Yankees Premium” when in reality other teams just don’t see everyone in the Yanks system as a future Hall of Famer.

cbucks, i have never played a head-to-head league, so there are differences. i think your bench is very important b/c every week you want look at who your players are going to be hitting against and sometimes bench some pretty good players b/c, say prince fielder is going to face the phillies for 4 games, you might do better with ty wigginton at 1b that week. (im throwing out names, i have no idea how prince hits against lee, halladay oswald and hammels, but im guessing its not that good.)

I think it’s almost a certainty that CC will opt out, no matter what he says. If he doesn’t opt out he’s leaving potentially 2-3 years @ 23 million on the table.

    ——————

I agree with that. I’ve been saying all winter that I think he will be under enormous pressure from his agent and the union to use the opt out if he has another good season.

I don’t think it’s a certainty that the Yankees can retain him and that is most annoying.

I fully expect the Angels and maybe even the Mets to make a major push for him.

  93. West Coast Yankee Fan February 14th, 2011 at 10:40 am

86w – good post. There are plenty of highly rated prospects out there in other teams systems, fans here do tend to inflate the value of our guys.

As far as other teams asking the Yankees for more. No one could know that to be true unless they had every offer laid out in front of them. But even if it were, that’s life. If you’re trying to sell something to a rich person (team or agent) you are going to ask for more. The Yankees don’t care about any other teams ability to match their payroll. If true – it’s the baseball universe seeking balance.

Beyond the obvious, I think the Yankees have a significant advantage in that Sabathia appears to genuinely enjoy being part of the organization. I think he definitely opts out. He’d be crazy not to. But I don’t think there’s anyway the Yankees don’t retain his services, unless for some reason they don’t want to.

Always something with this team. Can’t ever just play the game and keep it between the lines.

Hopefully CC just goes Jeter on this issue and completely shuts it down. If he is planning on opting out he will be extremely motivated to be lights out this year.

However, CC always has that mentality so that won’t change if at all.

Well for one thing I don’t believe the notion that they can’t afford Santana.

Second – after this season they have Beltran, Ollie Perez, K-Rod and Luis Castillo as big contracts coming off the payroll. Also Jose Reyes’s contract is up and my personal opinion is that Reyes will be traded by August 1.

That opens up a lot of money for them to spend on their rotation.

  104. UnKnown February 14th, 2011 at 10:46 am

In theory a good idea, but if he calls their bluff, then the pitching staff is even uglier next offseason. He can opt out and they can work out an extension, something like lee’s 5/125 with a smaller option in year 6 or a buy out.

  117. Ys Guy February 14th, 2011 at 10:52 am

it seems to me the players are taught by the union and other players that the owners are thier adversary (enemy actually). they have all the money and it’s your job to take away as much of it as you can. like they are a giant pinata filled with billions of dollars and its your job to take your best swing and grab as much of that cash as you can.

the owners beat the player over the head with a tire iron for 100 years, so who can blame them for feeling that way.

  118. Patrick February 14th, 2011 at 10:52 am

“Report was that the Royals asked for Montero, Baneulos/Betances, and then 2 more players for Greinke.”

Absurd. Dayton Moore is an idiot.

“That opens up a lot of money for them to spend on their rotation.”

The Mets aren’t in a “compete now” mode. They need to rebuild and with Alderson at the helm I think they will. Not to mention, the Mets owners simply don’t have $120 million+ to spend. Even if they did why would Alderson (a very smart guy) spend it all on one guy when the Mets aren’t going to compete – with or without him?

  119. randy l. February 14th, 2011 at 10:53 am

    joe in long island-

they’re probably even ticked off they have to pay so much for mauer and morneau because of the yankees and red sox jacking up the price.

if i were the twins , i’d want to collude with the yankees because the yankees are always trying to get twins players. i’d tell the yankees to give me players like gardner for a few years and we’d trade them back when they’re ready. players like gardner would then actually be able to bunt when they hit the bigs.

the yankees could feed a young guy who wouldn’t make the yankees all star lineup the twin’s way every now and then and do it cheaply.

then the twins might sell off a liriano to the yankees when they can no longer afford them.

as it is, the yankees are the enemy, and the twins act accordingly.

  120. Patrick February 14th, 2011 at 10:55 am

GB – maybe the Wilpons will try to take out more loans, with CC as collateral.

Chip – yes, that money is coming off the books for the Mets, but I think those dollars are already spoken for – paying off the Wilpons’ debt load, and making the team more financially attractive for a buyer. The team’s sale will be complicated by the possiblity that SNY might not be part of the deal (reportedly, Time Warner and Comcast have first dibs on buying SNY from Wilpon/Katz), so they need to put a lot of lipstick on that pig.

No offense intended for any pigs.

Was reading some of the Disney stuff from last night and I have a few suggestions. I’ve been to Disney every year (some years twice) since I was about 5 (25 now) so I have a decent feel for the place lol. First, if you’re in the Animal Kingdom allow me to suggest the Yak and Yeti. I was there in January when I ran the 1/2 marathon and it’s good Asian fusion type food not terribly priced, comparatively speaking. Big portions -We got the lettuce cups as an appetizer and it’d be enough for a meal- but try and save room for the fried wanton dessert which is amazing. Second, Cape May Cafe at the Beach Club is one of the best buffets in Disney. Finally if you’re looking for a steak house book a dinner at the Canada pavilion in EPCOT, if you can get a reservation that is. (le cellier it’s called).

Yankee related, I’m ecstatic that pitchers and catchers are finally reporting but I won’t enjoy it until this bar exam is finished in 10 days. It feels like the end of the alcs and the lack of major Yankee activity this winter have made it drag on. $0.02 added. Time for a practice MBE.

Even if the Mets dropped all those free agents and traded Reyes they would still have some very talented players in Wright, Bay, Pelfrey, Davis, Niese, Pagan and Santana.

Give them a rotation of CC, Santana, Pelfrey, Niese and RA with Mejia or Parnell closing – that’s enough to easily make them a serious contender in the East given the age on the Philly roster.

That doesn’t mean he’s the guy I most want the Yankees to get – just the guy I think the Yankees are most likely to get.

That’s based largely on Arizona not going anywhere in their division this year and Cashman and Towers having a long standing relationship of working together.

  143. Joe from Long Island February 14th, 2011 at 11:07 am

I think Sandy Alderson has bigger things on his plate than the Mets roster.

I think his primary job is getting the team ready to be sold. I bet he’s busy working with a small army of accountants and lawyers, getting things around that clown college in shape, getting the affairs in order, for for the market in 12 months.

That’s why he hired Ricciardi and DePodesta, to handle the baseball ops.

I think where the Mets finish this year is of no concern for Alderson. Only the P&L statement, and list of debts for the team and ballpark. That’s why Selig pushed him for the job. To sell the team, and clean up the mess before MLB gets a bigger black eye from the owner’s messy story being in the papers almost everyday.

They traded off players like Lew Burdette and Bill Virdon, they made 18 player trades with Baltimore. They did that because they signed they best young talent available. They made trades with Baltimore, Washington, KC, the Giants. Years ago, Boston was a farm team, too.

    SJ44 February 14th, 2011 at 11:11 am
    Chip,

Please, CC isn’t going to sign with the Mets.

The Mets had to borrow money from MLB to float off-season expenses. They are now going to sign CC?

    CC isn’t going anywhere.

    —————————-

    SJ -

The Rangers had to get loans from MLB – they were completely bankrupt and still found the money to bring in players throughout the season last year.

The Mets have a ton of money coming off their books this year and I’m sure they realize that the fastest way to increase revenue is to put a strong team on the field. CC would go a long way in that regard.

Again – all I’m saying is that if he opts out the Yankees are not a sure bet to retain him…I certainly hope they do; they’ve only missed out on two free agents that they’ve really wanted in the last 20 years so the odds are in their favor – I just don’t see it as a done deal yet.

  162. SJ44 February 14th, 2011 at 11:15 am

Also, the Lee and Sabathia situations aren’t analogous at all.

CC and his wife were actively recruiting the Lee’s to NY. Amber Sabathia was as aggressive as her husband in the recruitment.

If they didn’t like it here, why do that?

I get that folks are looking to take a non-story and turn it into one today.

However, the chances CC leaves the Yankees are pretty much nil.

If he opts out, they will pay him. If not, they will extend him.

Either way, he’s not going anywhere.

  163. randy l. February 14th, 2011 at 11:15 am

“Key word, former. Bill Smith is the GM now and he’s not a good one.”

    patrick-

terry ryan goes to minor league games. evaluates players and coaches. he advices on trades. he’s still a major part of the organization. a good organization holds on to valuable front office people. tom kelly is still an advisor.

the question you have to ask yourself as a baseball fan is how do the twins win the al central 6-9 years if their management is so bad.

the reality is that they’re doing something right and the way they go about their business has something to do with it.

i could care less about the twins won lost record. i go months in the season without looking at their box scores. my only interest in them is as an example of what the yankees could do if they’d tighten up their own organization.

  164. Patrick February 14th, 2011 at 11:15 am

We all assumed that the rotation next year was going to be CC, Lee, Andy, Hughes, AJ – how’d that work out?

First of all Lee vs Sabathia are two completely different scenarios and you know it.

I thought Lee would be a Yankee but it was by no means a sure thing. Lee went to the Phillies because he wanted to be there and because his wife didn’t want him to play for New York. Texas never had a shot at retaining Lee and never came close to offering him what he would have gotten with the Yankees.

The huge difference here is that we know for a fact that CC wants to be a Yankee and we know FOR A FACT that no team in baseball has the motivation or the ability to outbid the Yankees.

    CC is not going anywhere.

  165. Joe from Long Island February 14th, 2011 at 11:16 am

Chip – I understand your POV. However, from what I’ve read in the papers (NY Times lately) – the Wilpons have an awful high mountain to climb in court.

Apparently, the bankruptcy laws are a bit different than the criminal justice laws. The burden of proof rests with the defendant (the Wilpons) to prove they really were not aware of Madoff’s scheme. Further, the trustee appointed, Irving Picard, was handpicked by the judge (from a group of attorneys who routinely handle these sort of cases) to garner as much money as possible.

David Sheehan, one of the lead lawyers on the case for Picard, has been quoted as saying that they see no need to settle for less than their complete demand, ie, $1B. Granted, that may be bravado, intended to intimidate Wilpon/Katz. And a settlement is always possible. Mario Cuomo was just brought in to mediate.

But, this will cost the Wilpons a lot of money. Hundreds of millions of dollars. And Fred, between Madoff losses, Mets’ financial losses, his own real estate losses and lack of liquidity, is reported as being cash-poor.

I just don’t see the Mets spending a lot of money they don’t have.

  166. West Coast Yankee Fan February 14th, 2011 at 11:16 am

Subjects like the CC opt out only become big stories when there is ambiguity involved. It’s not the media’s fault, (unless they are reporting incorrectly), this is a legitimate thing to ask Sabathia about and it’s their job. Uncertainty feeds these things. Sabathia can put this to rest by saying one thing with certitude.

  167. Tom in N.J. February 14th, 2011 at 11:16 am

CC’s going to the Mets because Texas went all in with the Yankees in the Lee sweepstakes?

  168. Chip February 14th, 2011 at 11:17 am

    Patrick February 14th, 2011 at 11:12 am
patrick after the lee thing, you just cant say that.

Yes I can. The Yankees didn’t get outbid for Lee.

Look back to when Sabathia was first a free agent. He was younger, coming off his best season, healthy, was very hesitant to play for the Yankees. Cashman didn’t get outbid then, why would he now? It’s just not going to happen and I would bet any amount of money on it.

    ————–

The only other team to really make a play for him was the Angels who were counting on his desire to play in SoCal to help them out – they made a conservative offer and Cashman did in fact blow them away.

That said, we saw the lengths the Rangers were prepared to go to retain Cliff Lee – they stayed right with the Yankees offer for offer – why do you assume that wouldn’t be the case with CC?

  169. SJ44 February 14th, 2011 at 11:17 am

    Chip,

The Rangers added 10 million dollars to their second half payroll.

The Mets owners may have to sell the team.

Why pray tell would CC Sabathia want to go to a complete rebuilding situation at this stage of his career?

    It doesn’t make any sense.

The opt out was put there so CC could leave if he didn’t like it in NY. If I’m the Yankees I let it be known (after the season) that if CC opts out they will not renegotiate, and stick to it this time, unlike with A-Rod.

    ————–

How does that in any way benefit the Yankees?

It would show the Yankees won’t always capitulate for players trying to shake out a few more dollars from deals that are already great.

  171. Joe from Long Island February 14th, 2011 at 11:18 am

Ys guy – no, the gm doesn’t. But Wilpon’s only other choice will be personal bankruptcy, IMO. Again, I just know what I read in the papers, but it’s been pretty consistent. Fred’s in trouble. Lots of it.

Just read a really great article in the back on the new ESPN magazine that dealt with why young pitchers are losing velocity in the majors. It focused on this pitcher Tim Alderson in Pittsburgh and Mark Rogers in Milwaukee.

You guys should check it out. Basically, the thought is teams have stopped long tossing to protect arms and in the process robbed guys of their velocity turning them into non prospects.

I’d love to know if the Yankees allow guys to long toss. If they don’t, it could explain why Joba and Hughes both lost velocity in the majors.

I’m going to reserve judgement on that one until I actually see what Young is.

Bartlett had one really solid year

Garza’s a very good pitcher – but again – Young could be a lot better. We’ll have to wait and see.

Sorry Chip, its been 3 Years. Young is only a twin for 2 more seasons at arbitration price. The Twins got destroyed on that deal. They gave up a slick defending short stop that put up 1 very, very good offensive season and 600 innings of a good pitcher that helped take the Rays to a World Series and was then traded for like 5 other players.

Delmon Young put up 2 horrendous seasons and his best season so far was only merely good for a left fielder, and you have to factor in Delmon is bad on defense.

Terry Ryan was an excellent GM but Bill Smith isn’t smart. He traded excellent backup catcher Wilson Ramos for a reliever, leaving Drew Butera to be the backup despite Mauer not catching enough games to balance out such a poor backstop. He traded JJ Hardy for beans. The twins admitted they signed Nishioka without actually scouting him. The deal he got from the MEts was awful. The Crown Jewel of the deal had numerous flaws and no one else was very good compared to reported Yankee/Red Sox offers.

Its not like Bill Smith found Morneau and Mauer, he inherited a solid foundation from Terry Ryan. Shoot his team only won 87 games in 09.

  175. Chip February 14th, 2011 at 11:20 am

    SJ and Patrick -

I certainly hope both of you are right on CC staying with the Yankees.

That said, until his name is on the dotted line I will not be as certain.

Last week when I said that my biggest concern going into next year was whether he opted out or not – I was told I was crazy that there was no way he was opting out…now that he’s not as firm on the subject the tone has changed to…well who cares if he opts out the Yankees will keep him anyway.

As with everything else I will respond with “We’ll see.”

i’m down in florida for two months and when i’m not playing golf, i’ll be checking out some spring baseball.

this really is one of the best times of the year to visit team’s facilities. i get bored with actual spring training games quickly and would much rather go to the back fields or minor league complexes to get up close to workouts.

if i know a coach at one of the complexes, all the better. one of my my favorite back field visits was watching sandy koufax at the rangers stadium in port charlotte showing the whole starting staff how to lengthen their strides to get more on their fast ball. i watched with about ten fans from a dozen feet away for an hour. pure gold.

that same visit juan gonzalez came up and watched from the inside of the fence i was leaning on. he rested his forearm on the top of the fence. his forearm looked three times as big as my forearm( i was an in shape 220 then). it looked like if a pin were stuck in it it would pop. now this was the peak of the PED years with canseco on the team also.

there was a story there had i known what to be looking for. but that’s the point. there are stories at every back field in all the spring training complexes. check them out of you can. you can get much closer to players and what they are working on than just watching spring training games,

Did paying A-Rod an AAV of $27.5mil in 2015-2017 at ages 39-42 make them a better team? Remains to be seen, but most people see that probably being an albatross in the later years and criticize the renegotiation of that contract.

If CC only wanted one, maybe two more years, it’s not as bad as A-Rod’s contract…

    -BUT-

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.
