Sabathia throws second bullpen

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Feb 17, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

CC Sabathia did the early work today, throwing his bullpen early this morning at Steinbrenner Field. It was Sabathia’s second bullpen of the spring.

Right now, Jesus Montero and Austin Romine are taking their turns in the batting cage beneath the stadium. Brett Gardner just walked in.

Clubhouse opens to the media in five minutes. Another day…

UPDATE, 9:24 a.m.: Based on his locker, I’m pretty confident Mariano Rivera has arrived.

hmmm…I guess Miggy would not be a good fantasy baseball choice

    *************

Kate, you are in my league right?
Then you absolutely should draft him

Also- when playing GTLU please follow the same advice I give Fran. Always bat Pena fourth

Erica-did you catch Top Chef last night??? :)

  3. Ys Guy February 17th, 2011 at 9:15 am

kate, no, miggy is money in the bank, hes totally consitent and he will go top 3 or 4 in any good draft. of course if you pass him up for say evan longoria you’ll be just fine. but you can bet the next person will grab miggy.

    Erica,
I may draft Pena in the 1st round. Always good to get your clean-up hitter 1st :)

    Erin,
I did watch Top Chef. The muppets were great judges. It was so funny.

Miggy is prolly the best pure bat right after Puhojs. of course, younger.

    Kate,
you can draft players in whatever order you want. Usually in the 1st few rounds, I go for the best players available and then fill out my roster. .

    Ys Guy,

I set the draft order to be at random and determined 1 hour before the draft. I could have chose to take the 1st pick, but I wanted to be fair to everyone. That being said, I think you should all leave me Robbie :)

As always, post and then find a new thread!

    repost:

Y’s Guy – because I am known to have great compassion and to promote the needs of others over my own, I am going to do you a huge favor. And there is no need to thank me. They say goodness is its own reward. I am going to take your Joba stock off your hands.

    Stock please.

    *****************

Dad, it doesn’t happen everywhere, but the best run and most productive organizations are those that recognize that employees are not cookie cutter and that there are different needs that when met can only enhance the bottom line. The Yankees are more than able to find ways to deal with unique situations. The question is whether they are so wrapped up in the assembly-line, lockstep of the way baseball operates that they cannot see the forest for the trees in this one. Sometimes critical needs go unmet merely because they are not recognized as such. It’s like a teacher with 50 kids in class. That person likely focuses on the bottom line day to day and may not recognize that there is a student in class who, with a little coaxing and a different approach, could blossom and turn out to be the best student in class.

But since the Yankees are more private than public school in their reputation, I have to believe they are not just not cutting edge when it comes to thinking outside of the box. They are great at what they do, but there are some things they don’t seem to do. I think that they are so used to being elite that the thought of an ACTIVE sport psychologist on staff is something that they probably think isn’t a necessity. I can’t remember which team it is in the majors, but I remember reading about one that uses sports psychology as a routine! That’s just an example of being creative with your players.

Off to conquer the world. Later y’all.

    Doreen,

You can draft any combination of starters and relievers, but there is a limit to the number of starts over the course of the season. Don’t recall what it is off-hand.

  22. Doreen February 17th, 2011 at 9:30 am

    Fran -

The “snake” draft – does that mean 1-14, then 14-1, then 1-14, etc.?

And with pitchers, are there a set number of starting pitchers you draft?

    I guess I was wrong.

  24. Doreen February 17th, 2011 at 9:32 am

Thanks, Fran, about the pitchers – I’ll double check the rules at ESPN some time today. I think I’m over-thinking this.

  25. Ys Guy February 17th, 2011 at 9:32 am

ok kids a little taste of what to expect. the first round in most all mlb 5×5 leagues will look like this:

pujols, hanram, miggy, tulo, longoria, crawford, braun, agon, wright, votto, cano

where to grab the first pitcher (halladay) is the big question. some people have a plan that says dont pick a pitcher in the first 3 or 4 rounds, others say you need an ace so pick one in the first 2 rounds.

it is generally accepted the you dont ‘pay’ for saves, b/c your starters throw 200 innings which effects your pitching ratios so much more than a reliever who throws 70 IP, but there is usually some yankees fan in any draft who grabs mo in the 4th round.

  26. Fran the original February 17th, 2011 at 9:32 am

    Doreen,

Exactly right on the way the draft works.

You get points for wins and saves plus strikeouts, etc. Anyway you want starters and closers who get points for wins and saves. Middle relievers don’t do you much good.

  27. Doreen February 17th, 2011 at 9:33 am

A further update on GTLU – There will be no GTLU on the Friday and Monday surrounding the Memorial Day and Independence Day weekends.

Also, June 10th may be a no GTLU day, but I have to double check something on my personal calendar.

Per Olney- Miguel Cabrera arrested last night on DUI charge.

  29. SJ44 February 17th, 2011 at 9:36 am

Gotta figure rehab time is in the offing for Cabrera.

When he was with the Marlins, he would get stopped quite often by the cops and given a break.

It’s why when it comes to giving players franchise setting deals, how they are off the field is as important as how they are on it.

    Reliability is everything.

Heyman and Twitter. Another guy caught up in his own celebrity.

And you wonder why many athletes hate the media and will only communicate in cliches.

Whatever Joba’s physical condition may be, he has always made himself accessible to the media.

You can write a column like Joel Sherman did this AM with legitimate points re: this issue.

Or……..you can act like a jerk on Twitter.

It’s why one guy is an excellent baseball writer and the other guynis a shill for Scott Boras.

  30. Ys Guy February 17th, 2011 at 9:38 am

d, yes that is what a snake draft means. what you have to be prepared for is if you are at the head or tail of the snake, you will be chosing two players each time. if you pick first, you will also pick 28th and 29th and then 56th and 57th in our 14 team draft. if you pick last you go 14th, 15th, then 42nd and 43rd or whatever. i like picking there b/c you are focused and pick two at a time but you have to stay way ahead on position scarcity, there could be 6 good catchers left when you pick one time but by the time you pick next they are all gone and you end up with a nothing catcher.

  31. Erica in NY February 17th, 2011 at 9:40 am

    Doreen-

    You are smart.
Don’t do what I did last year and forget how many pitchers are in a rotation. I got confused in all the excited and drafted 3 starting pitchers and then filled my bench.

And that folks, is how you wind up drafting Edwin Jackson :-(

  32. Triple Short of a Cycle February 17th, 2011 at 9:44 am

The first round is really top heavy this year. If you can’t get a top 7 or so pick you would be better off picking 12th

  33. Ys Guy February 17th, 2011 at 9:45 am

btw, i should mention here that we may want to modify the espn format for this league if we do have 14 teams.

14 teams x 25 players is 350 players. that is alot. you start getting down to some pretty shaky guys down there, #4 starters and utitility guys. standard leagues generally dont go that deep and espn doesnt do any mock drafts or give you much to go on as far as who to draft those last 5 rounds or so. if we eliminated one pitcher, the extra middle infielder the util and one bench spot, we would cut the ‘universe’ by 56 players.

    just a suggestion.

SJ44- Cabrera going to need some serious rehab and medication. From the Washington Post:

Cabrera, 27, was spotted by a deputy in a car that’s engine was smoking alongside a road in Fort Pierce. Inside the vehicle, Cabrera smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech and took a swig from a bottle of scotch in front of a deputy, according to St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office said. He refused to cooperate and more deputies were called to the scene.

He was wandering into the road with his hands up before he was handcuffed, the report said. He kept saying, “Do you know who I am, you don’t know anything about my problems,” and cursed at deputies who tried to get him into a patrol car.

    @SI_JonHeyman Jon Heyman
very sad about miguel cabreras dui. I bought his story about his life turnaround last year. time for another turnaround.

Another Heyman fail, he could have been really investigating Cabrera’s issue but instead he just takes him at his word and lets him slip back into spiraling darkness.

  40. Bronx Jeers February 17th, 2011 at 9:50 am

The NY media is milking the weight story for all it’s worth.

This morning I saw Duke Castiglione talking about the Yankees possibly having the heaviest 25 man roster in history.

  41. Vineyard Yankee February 17th, 2011 at 9:51 am

The raging Joba debate continues. If Joba is lights out as a 5th or 6th inning guy perhaps he will be given another opportunity to start or pitch in more meaningful situations. If he pitches well and doesn’t get another opportunity in NY then at least his stock will rise and he may then have some trade value. If he is inconsistent his career will be an afterthought.

I believe that his destiny lies in his own hands.

  42. Triple Short of a Cycle February 17th, 2011 at 9:51 am

    Cashmoney,

The difference between the number 8 or 9 guy and the 13 or 14 guy is pretty much the same so it would be better to get 2 solid guys at 14 and 15 rather then 1 at 8 and the next one at 21.

Most of the guys later in the first round are second round players anyway

  43. Bronx Jeers February 17th, 2011 at 9:53 am

Just wanted to comment on Chad’s post about Joba from last night. First off, I thought it was great and Chad is doing an amazing job here.

Also, from reading Chad enough over the year I never get a sense he tries to make the news. I think he reports it fairly and accurately.

Which leads me to what I felt after reading his post and the quotes he pulled. I don’t think Joba and Cashman are on the same page and I sense a bit of resentment in both sides in their words. I think there’s an element of the Yankees trying to “punish” him and I think there’s an element of “Go ask Dad” in Joba’s remarks.

I wonder if either party has ever had a really honest conversation with each other. I should hope they have, but if Joba wants to start (and I believe the man wants to start) he has to show some maturity and dedication.

I really think the whole thing is less about health and more about attitudes (Joba’s and the front office).

Losing a middle reliever doesn’t kill a team. Joba’s role is not an important make or break role on this team.

If the two sides haven’t had a coming to Jesus meeting yet, I think they should. It might free both of them up to move forward instead of incrementally stepping backwards.

As for that Phil/Joba debate that was going on in here last night? Some of you are seriously bonkers.

  46. blake February 17th, 2011 at 9:57 am

The Tigers really should be proactive here in getting Cabrera some help…..he’s the 2nd best hitter in baseball for me and it would really be a shame to have that derailed.

Right now I am concentrating my efforts on position ranking rather than overall ranking, just to get a feel for what’s available, and I guess I’ll put together a “dream team” and then downgrade from there, working with the overall ranking list.

I have so many printed sheets, I have to put a file together.

    I need a job.

I’ve gone through all the positions except for Outfield and Relief Pitchers. Starting pitcher is interesting.

    Doreen,

I had to quit fantasy baseball cold turkey. I had won my league like 7 years in a row and it was like a job for me. I was pouring over articles and waiver wires constantly looking for matchup advantages game to game. I think I spent a month or more re-ranking my draft based on information I could find on players. It got to a level where I was spending more time doing that each day than writing so I quit it and went out on top. The guys from my league still try to get me back in every year because none of them ever beat me. It was a total time sucker.

  54. Doreen February 17th, 2011 at 10:03 am

I have an off-topic tech question for Mac users out there.

I am going to get an iMac today. I was also thinking of getting the Time Capsule. We have one Dell laptop that I’d also like to be able to back up. Can the Time Capsule be set up to back up Mac and PC?

Also, does anyone have experience using an ethernet splitter? I want to set up my printer to work wirelessly, but I’m out of connections. :)

  55. Ys Guy February 17th, 2011 at 10:05 am

triple good call, not much difference between cano utley, hamilton, zimmerman, arod, tex, c gone, youkilis, arod. any one could turn out to be better than any other (barring injuries) but you still dont go wrong with any of them. the season is not won by who you pick in the first 2 rounds.

  56. Doreen February 17th, 2011 at 10:07 am

    G. Love

I’m getting that sense, for sure, that it’s going to be a total time vacuum! I’ve never done it before because my husband did it years ago and it took up too much time (he did it in the years before the internet) and became work instead of a fun pastime.

I figured I’d give it a try this year and see what’s what.

I was gathering info on starting pitchers and ESPN didn’t let me cut and paste everything I needed, so I c&p what I could and then filled in the blanks for over 100 pitchers by hand. Meantime, the laundry is piling up.

So I realized I need balance and limit myself. I have a month, no need to do it all in a day. :)

  61. Ys Guy February 17th, 2011 at 10:10 am

g love i’ve had a lifetime love of roto or fantasy baseball, but i’m with you, it can take over if you are not careful. i tend to play for a year or two then skip. once i stopped for over 10 years, then when i got a pc it became so easy i started again for a while. i didn play last year at all.

what i do is limit it to my ‘baseball time’ i play on the computer while watching or listening to the yankees game and thats it.

i do spend alot of time preparing for the draft, but february is a very slow month for me, so i actually like doing that. i’ve been on that the past 3 days and im just about where i want to be now.

Sounds like Cabrera was a total mental mess – he was belligerent and apparently drank scotch in front of the officer that approached him at the roadside. Very sad – he is an amazing talent and sounds like he might follow the Strawberry model to self destruction.

  67. G. Love February 17th, 2011 at 10:18 am

    Y’s Guy,

I’m so competitive that I wasn’t able to limit my time when it came to fantasy baseball. I just wanted to win so bad I got very engrossed with it.

Thankfully, I quit it before I married my wife so she never had to contend with that or witness it. I would spend hours late at night on instant messenger trying to make trades with the other guys in my league. I’d eventually wear them down.

I did have one rule though — no Red Sox players on my teams. I wouldn’t draft or trade for them or sign one off the waiver wire ever.

It was a ton of fun, but it just took up too much of my time. I do miss it though and I definitely get the itch every time this year, lol.

  68. Against All Odds February 17th, 2011 at 10:18 am

  75. blake February 17th, 2011 at 10:24 am

    Ys guy,

Its a keeper league and I took over a team with 6 keepers (Halladay, Sabathia, Arod, Mauer, Holliday, Cruz). I picked 5th. 10 team league. 16 categories. Head to head. I drafted a lot of the pitchers very late (Hudson, Kennedy, Zambrano, Dempster) also draft 5 rookies/minor leaguers. I got Montero, Trout, Freeman, Banuelos, Betances.

  76. West Coast Yankee Fan February 17th, 2011 at 10:24 am

SJ44 – Heyman was ABSOLUTELY CORRECT in what he said. Tweet first, report second.

“Another guy caught up in his own celebrity.”

“Do you know who I am, you don’t know anything about my problems,” and cursed at deputies who tried to get him into a patrol car.

That is an absolutely correct take on it, as YOU corroborated yourself by recounting his Florida status and I quote you.

“When he was with the Marlins, he would get stopped quite often by the cops and given a break.”

  77. Triple Short of a Cycle February 17th, 2011 at 10:24 am

The only way I would take a pitcher in the first would be in a CBS head to head points league. That setup clearly favors elite pitchers early.

I am entering my first NFBC league this year. 15 teams. It should be pretty exciting

  78. SAS February 17th, 2011 at 10:25 am

    Fran, Doreen, Anyone,

What does DTD mean after a player’s name on the ESPN lists?

  79. Ys Guy February 17th, 2011 at 10:25 am

good call d. the draft is won or lost in rounds 10-20 imo. (25 round draft)

  80. Ys Guy February 17th, 2011 at 10:26 am

    day to day

“we’re all day to day”! thanks dan patrick

  81. Tom in N.J. February 17th, 2011 at 10:26 am

Another day, another round ‘o trolling.

  82. Chip February 17th, 2011 at 10:26 am

How long before someone suggests Miggy Cabrera start taking life lessons from Josh Hamilton?

  83. Jason Voorhees February 17th, 2011 at 10:26 am

Some people on here take themselves way too seriously

  84. Chip February 17th, 2011 at 10:27 am

In fairness, Miggy doesn’t seem too upset by the DUI:

    Blake,
    Impressive team.

    G Love,
I drafted Papelbon one season and was torn between my fantasy team and wanting him to blow savws. So now, no more Red Sox on my team.

  86. LGY February 17th, 2011 at 10:28 am

    Right on cue :D

  87. Tom in N.J. February 17th, 2011 at 10:28 am

SAS, I think it means ‘day to day.’ It’s an injury update.

  88. Jerkface February 17th, 2011 at 10:28 am

Third hand info, but a friend’s friend is an editor at SI and he says Heyman is a douche and impossible to work with.

  89. Ys Guy February 17th, 2011 at 10:28 am

blake, you seem to be the benefactor of someone who built a good team, kinda like bob watson.

  90. LGY February 17th, 2011 at 10:29 am

Since weight is the topic de jour this spring so far can we talk about how fat Colonoscopy is today?

  91. blake February 17th, 2011 at 10:30 am

    Ys,

Yea….most other teams had good keepers as well though.

  92. Chip February 17th, 2011 at 10:32 am

    Random note from Heyman:

The D’Backs have the following guys competing for their opening at 1b:
    Branyan
    Micah Owings
    Xavier Nady
    Juan Miranda

Miranda is the favorite – Kevin Towers absolutely loved the guy last year when they were both with the Yankees.

  93. Fran the original February 17th, 2011 at 10:32 am

    SAS,

Tom is right. If a player gets hurt or goes on the DL, that would change.

  94. Tom in N.J. February 17th, 2011 at 10:32 am

The pictures of Joba so far don’t seem to correlate with the idea that Joba is fat.

  95. SAS February 17th, 2011 at 10:34 am

    Thanks Tom.

There was also something about players who couldn’t be dropped…anybody???

  96. Ys Guy February 17th, 2011 at 10:35 am

sorry, you and bob watson would be the beneficiaries and gene michael and whoever quit your team would be the benefactor…

    ———————————-

So why did Cashman give such a strong statement. “He’s heavier I’ll leave it at that”

  98. Cashmoney February 17th, 2011 at 10:35 am

Chip, I think Miranda is capable of 20,80 in the desert. he might have a leg up on D over Branyan. B can do 30,90.

  99. upstate kate February 17th, 2011 at 10:36 am

I guess I will be studying the rules this weekend, thanks for the tips

  100. Chip February 17th, 2011 at 10:36 am

So if you’re Detroit and you’re fed up with Miguel Cabrera:

Texas gets: Miguel Cabrera and Brandon Boesch
Detroit gets: Mitch Moreland, Nelson Cruz, Derrek Holland and Michael Young

  101. Ys Guy February 17th, 2011 at 10:36 am

chip good luck to juan miranda, hopefully he can make it back to the majors sometime!

  102. BoJo February 17th, 2011 at 10:37 am

Blake–come clean. There are only 3 teams in your league, right?

Good draft–I like seeing the Gio man there.

  103. Joe from Long Island February 17th, 2011 at 10:38 am

G.Love – I tend to agree with your 9:56 post.

First, Chad and Sam do a top notch job. When they do offer their own opinions, they label them as such, keeping it distinct from their reporting, which tends to be accurate.

Secondly, yes, it does appear that Joba and Cash/the Yankees are not on the same page all of the time. However, I do think that there have been numerous meetings with Joba. It was reported last season, if I remember correctly, that Joba met with everybody except maybe the bat boy, in an attempt to get on the same page with things.

Cash clearly got Robbie Cano’s attention, a year ago, when he spoke in the universal language of money. So, I think Cash knows what motivates contemporary pro athelets.

We all know the answer for Joba. He has to find Jesus within himself.

Heck, in a way, we all do. But, that’s another discussion for another forum.

Bojo….10 teams. I like it but I do have a lot of really young players and injury risks.

  106. Vineyard Yankee February 17th, 2011 at 10:44 am

Joba can weigh 320lbs if that’s what it takes for him to be consistent and be a contributor to the team. Performance is what matters not what he looks like.

Tom in N.J., don’t steal their toys, now. It’s “the idea” that matters.the truth is not only irrelevant, but of no interest.
