Colon: “The problem’s not the weight, it’s the arm”

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Feb 18, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

We’re officially in some sort of Camp Weight Watchers down here in Tampa. CC Sabathia lost weight, Joba Chamberlain gained weight, and Bartolo Colon is a big man even on his lighter days.

Today, Colon said he weighs 267 pounds. He’d like to get down to 250. Thing is, Colon said he’s weighed at least 250 every year since 2002. That’s a stretch that includes his worst years and his Cy Young year.

“The problem’s not the weight, it’s the arm,” he said.

Colon has his own training routine this spring. I suppose you could argue that it’s because of his size, but frankly it’s not especially unusual for a 37-year-old to do something different from a 27-year-old in spring training. Colon said the heaviest he’s ever pitched was at 278 pounds, which was way back during his days in Cleveland, when he was in his 20s and probably destroying clubhouse spreads with Sabathia.

“I feel really good right now the way I am,” he said. “But I feel like I need to go down with my weight a little bit more.”

As long as he feels good.

    repost from the last thread.

Not sure if this has been posted but The Rangers are giving Neftali Feliz a shot at making the rotation

  3. upstate kate February 18th, 2011 at 2:18 pm

interesting Michelle. Feliz would be more valuable as a starter I would guess.

The NBA and the game will benefit greatly from having two competitive teams in New York City. Brooklyn will be a great home and I would never underestimate the wealth and determination of Mikhail Prokhorov who is reportedly worth $18 billion dollars.

“The NBA and the game will benefit greatly from having two competitive teams in New York City. Brooklyn will be a great home and I would never underestimate the wealth and determination of Mikhail Prokhorov who is reportedly worth $18 billion dollars.”

    ————————

Neither the Knicks or Nets will be competitive if Melo goes to NJ.

They will be battling each other out for a 6-8 seed the next 2 years to both get bounced in round 1 of the playoffs.

  6. Betsy February 18th, 2011 at 2:22 pm

    Later!

  7. AldotheApache February 18th, 2011 at 2:22 pm

When did the Knicks become competitive?

Did I blink and miss something?

  8. West Coast Yankee Fan February 18th, 2011 at 2:23 pm

I think Prokhorov has a longer term perspective, like the Nationals do. You can’t build a winner overnight. Superstars often draw others.

  9. West Coast Yankee Fan February 18th, 2011 at 2:26 pm

Is that Mo “laughing with him” back there?

  10. LGY February 18th, 2011 at 2:30 pm

“I think Prokhorov has a longer term perspective, like the Nationals do. You can’t build a winner overnight. Superstars often draw others.”

    ————-

The next superstars to hit the market in the NBA are Paul, Deron, and Howard 1.5 years from now.

So, then you would have the Nets out of the playoffs this year and Knicks probably bounced in the first round. Then in 2012 those two getting ng into the playoffs as bottom dwellers and not getting past the first. Finally, in 2013 you have those two competing to draw that 2nd superstar to the team with no guarantee either team would be able to get Paul, Deron, or Howard.

If Melo goes to the Nets, the NBA would be hoping in 2013 those teams are competitive. Neither as currently constructed would be.

  11. Triple Short of a Cycle February 18th, 2011 at 2:30 pm

    LGY,

Why do you say that? The Knicks could sign Paul and Howard. They would actually be better off with Stat,Paul and Howard then Stat,Melo and Paul

  12. YankeesNmore February 18th, 2011 at 2:33 pm

“My weight isn’t the reason I can’t get people out, it’s my rag arm. Thank God there’s a Brian Cashman out there who can’t manage to come up with something better than me.” — Bartolo Colon’s thoughts.

  13. LGY February 18th, 2011 at 2:34 pm

    Triple,

The Knicks would have to gut the roster to fit 3 max contracts and then I am not even sure that will be possible.

Also, how likely is it that Paul and Howard would sign with the Knicks?

  14. Jason Voorhees February 18th, 2011 at 2:39 pm

    Complain much?

  15. Triple Short of a Cycle February 18th, 2011 at 2:47 pm

    LGY,

Getting Paul here wouldn’t be an issue but Howard is a different story. Not saying they could pull it off but they would be better off with that threesome then the Melo one

  16. Bronx Jeers February 18th, 2011 at 2:48 pm

Didn’t Colon leave the Red Sox to go to the DR and then decide to stay?

Anybody who quits the Sox can’t be bad in my book. I’m pulling for him.

  17. Against All Odds February 18th, 2011 at 2:49 pm

Anthony, speaking Friday in Los Angeles, said “no meeting at all” is scheduled with the Nets. Calling it “news to me,” Anthony said: “If I was to meet with that guy (Prokhorov) to be honest I really don’t know what I would say.”

I agree. The NBA has way more bandwagon fans/ or fans of individual players so I don’t buy the claim that the Nets won’t ever be the main attraction….they start competing for ECF and Jay Z and all the others will flock to Brooklyn

And I hope Howard stays in Orlando. Despite what ESPN tells you, he seems happy in Orlando and ownership has had them competing for a Title the last 4 years….I know a few people that know him personally and he’s not an egomaniac like Lebron and it’s a lot easier to get future free agents to sign in Orlando vs Cleveland, and w/ the new Arena(105 straight sellouts) the Magic are making and spending money

    IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY DOREEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-)

I hope you have a wonderful birthday :-)

  21. LGY February 18th, 2011 at 2:53 pm

    Triple,

Yeah I agree that would be better in a vacuum, but they would have to wait 1.5 years for that.

That would have Amare 2 years older and cost them 2 playoff runs.

  22. GreenBeret7 February 18th, 2011 at 2:54 pm

Happy Birthday, Doreen. I hope you get a new car and a year’s worth of peace on this board. Best wishes on your 21st Birthday.

    Hey Aldo–long time no see.

    Happy BDay Doreen!

  25. BoJo February 18th, 2011 at 2:56 pm

Interesting comment from Texas pitching coach about Feliz moving to starter:

“If you are faced with that decision, would you rather have 70 innings out of your No. 1 guy or 200 innings? It’s kind of a no-brainer to me,” Maddux said. “He’s got to throw three pitches for strikes and get the ball down in the zone. He has the God-given talent to excel more than other guys who can do the same thing.”

Hmmmm–what an interesting way to look at it.

  26. Mell February 18th, 2011 at 2:59 pm

Happy B-day Doreen. Nice timing, as it leads off a three day weekend. Enjoy!

  27. blake February 18th, 2011 at 2:59 pm

Smart move for Texas to try Feliz in the rotation……would have been smarter if they had signed Soriano.

Good name GB7 The New York Commies I like it!

  31. Triple Short of a Cycle February 18th, 2011 at 3:01 pm

    BoJo,

Of course its a no brainer. All you have to do is look at the free agent market and see how much a number 1 starter goes for compared to a closer. Unlike the idiots on the FAN who thought Joba was more valuable as a reliever.

Remember all relievers are failed starters even Rivera

  32. Triple Short of a Cycle February 18th, 2011 at 3:02 pm

    LGY,

I agree but even if they got Melo now they would still have to wait for 1 of the 2 point guards since Felton would prob go in the deal and they would need a big man. Just having Melo and Stat is not enough to get past the Heat or Celtics in the playoffs

  33. blake February 18th, 2011 at 3:03 pm

The Nets are giving up 4 first round picks……that’s a lot.

  34. upstate kate February 18th, 2011 at 3:04 pm

    Happy Birthday Doreen :)

  35. Mell February 18th, 2011 at 3:04 pm

    Not the Bulls either.

  36. Mell February 18th, 2011 at 3:05 pm

“The Nets are giving up 4 first round picks……that’s a lot.”

Yeah it is. I’d guess at least a couple of them are lottery protected, but that’s still quite a lot.

  37. blake February 18th, 2011 at 3:06 pm

I doubt Carmello will sign the extension with the Nets.

  38. LGY February 18th, 2011 at 3:06 pm

Stat, Melo, and Billups can beat the Bulls.

The Knicks have already beat the Bulls twice this year.

  39. Pat M. February 18th, 2011 at 3:07 pm

    Happy Birthday Doreen !!!!!

  40. BoJo February 18th, 2011 at 3:07 pm

I think Melo will tell the Nets that he won’t be signing any extension…and he will be a Knick. Probably as a FA.

  41. tampayank February 18th, 2011 at 3:07 pm

it’s a lot to give up but it’s a good PR move to get more excitement around that franchise

  42. Pat M. February 18th, 2011 at 3:08 pm

LGY…..The Bulls will be a very tough team to deal with come April…….Knicks didn’t face the true Bulls team…….

  43. blake February 18th, 2011 at 3:08 pm

If I were Carmello then I wouldn’t want to join a gutted team with no draft picks……

  44. tampayank February 18th, 2011 at 3:08 pm

    “# BoJo February 18th, 2011 at 3:07 pm

he would be risking losing over $20 mil if the did that b/c the CBA this summer

  45. BoJo February 18th, 2011 at 3:09 pm

Anyone care for another trivia question?

  46. blake February 18th, 2011 at 3:10 pm

I think Melo will wait this thing out until the Nuggets accept a lesser deal with the Knicks ……one in which they would still have a good core of players to compete with.

  47. BoJo February 18th, 2011 at 3:11 pm

    Tampayank–

Apparently, he has said he is willing to do that. Probably a bargaining stance….

Once Nets and Lakers drop out of contention, Knicks can offer very little on dollar and get him. Denver will have no where to turn. So Carmello is forcing the deal to go to Knicks for less players than Denver wants.

That’s called leverage. The only thing Denver can do is hold him out of spite so they both lose.

  48. LGY February 18th, 2011 at 3:11 pm

Amare and Melo have both carried teams to the Western Conference Finals. Billups is also a playoff tested PG.

With those 3 and if the Knicks can get a big man to bash on the boards like Dalembert (who might get bought out) they will be really tough in the playoffs.

  49. jackamir February 18th, 2011 at 3:11 pm

I’ve watched Colon play roulette here in Vegas and he was drinking Lite Beer. I had to chuckle because when you see him up close the man has no neck. He was with his wife and he is a very quiet unassuming soul. I hope he bounces back and contributes. It would put a fitting end to an up & down career.

  50. Fran the original February 18th, 2011 at 3:13 pm

    Happy Birthday Doreen :)

    Many happy returns.

  51. BoJo February 18th, 2011 at 3:13 pm

No Neck Williams had no neck…Colon is the man of a thousand chins.

  52. blake February 18th, 2011 at 3:14 pm

I doubt Colon makes the team…..he’s worth a look but I doubt he makes it.

  53. Mell February 18th, 2011 at 3:14 pm

“The Knicks have already beat the Bulls twice this year.”

That was two months ago. Bulls a much better club now and the Knicks a little worse. In a series that matters, I’ll take the team that has a good point guard and can play defense.

  54. Mell February 18th, 2011 at 3:16 pm

“I think Melo will wait this thing out until the Nuggets accept a lesser deal with the Knicks”

Knicks package is such crap that I think they’d hold him, make the playoffs this year and watch him go to free agency.

  61. tampayank February 18th, 2011 at 3:25 pm

the Bulls have impressed me, Rose is very fun to watch……the Eastern Conference will be fun to watch down the stretch w/ Boston, Miami, Orlando, Chicago, and even maybe Atlanta in the mix……I wonder if the older legs of the Celtics finally give in during the postseason, I hope so

  62. blake February 18th, 2011 at 3:26 pm

    Mell,
I think the Nuggets will deal him to the Knicks before they lose him.for nothing and the Knicks will probably sweeten the offer before its over……

  63. Mell February 18th, 2011 at 3:28 pm

    Mell,

Yea but I’m not sure the Knicks have made their final offer….I think they know he wants to come there and they are just biding there time hoping that they can get him at the lowest price possible, which would occur right before the deadline when the Nuggets have to make a decision on whether to trade him for something or lose him for nothing.

Yea that seems to be the typical take. I’m anxious to see where he is catching wise this spring, he doesn’t have to be Yadier Molina to give the Yankees huge positional advantages….Piliere seems to be one of the only guys out there that believes he can stick as a catcher.

The roster pamphlet they’re giving out at the stadium lists Colon as weighing 185. One guy commented that must be from his high school years. I also didn’t realize how tall Montero is, they have him listed as 6’4. The closest to him is Posada at 6’2.

For those who look at my pictures, on sunday they will have all 3 fields open. Who and what do you want me to get pictures and video of? Its kind of overwhelming the amount that goes on at one time between the bullpen, the main fiels and the 2 fields on the sides of the stadium. so if I have a goal of things to focus on then I can allocate my time better.

  82. mykyl1 February 19th, 2011 at 9:00 am

It’s a total joke. The Yankee roster and spring training invitees are a total bunch of out of shape fat boys. Once they get the money they don’t give a crap. CC is a joke and his weight issues will catch up with him big time. The Arod contract will be the biggest joke in sports history as he ages. Jeter as well will prove to be an over the hill gang club member. Are any of you looking at this mess through anything other then rose colored glasses. The will get out hustled at every turn and the pitching staff is a total joke. It would be nice if Tex could earn his keep for each month he gets paid not just June July and Aug.
