Derek Jeter press conference

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Feb 20, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

We’re getting started here at the Derek Jeter press conference. Of course the early questions have been about his offseason contract negotiations.

“I can’t say I’m any more motivated by anything that went on in the offseason,” Jeter said.

UPDATE, 9:23 a.m.: Jeter said his winter work with Kevin Long was no different from his work with Long late last season. He said his swing will look physically no different than it was down the stretch.

“You won’t see anything different,” Jeter said.

UPDATE, 9:26 a.m.: “When you’re younger I don’t think you have to do as much (to be ready for the season).”

UPDATE, 9:30 a.m.: On approaching 3,000 hits: “Have fun with it. I think that’s the thing I’m going to try to focus on.” Jeter said because it’s a hit milestone, he doesn’t have to do anything different. He goes to the plate trying to get a hit anyway.

UPDATE, 9:33 a.m.: A few years ago Jeter began talking with Long about the idea of taking out his stride. He used to occasionally not stride in the cage during batting practice.

When you’re younger, you aren’t as old as you are later.

  2. Deal With It February 20th, 2011 at 9:35 am

Age catches up with everyone much like the records he is chasing.

Well I guess I can use this as a very shaky tie-in to what I am going to post. Remember when DJ had problems with taxes because it was said that he didn’t pay NY taxes or something like that and he was supposed to?

That brings me to the topic of taxes! I started to use TurboTax Free Online version (I actually have a tax accountant but figured it would be interesting to do my taxes online to see how close I came to his final figures). I got to a point where it told me that unless I upgrade to a paying version, it would have to bid me a fond farewell…

In a pig’s eye I’m going to do that. I guess I’ll just have to trust my tax accountant.

    :)

  4. Ys Guy February 20th, 2011 at 9:37 am

chad, nothing in there about rickey martin?

  5. 108 stitches February 20th, 2011 at 9:37 am

    re-post

In the early going of spring training, Martin and Cervelli look good but there too much time and exhibition games to fully determine. It’s not an issue to start Monrero’s arbitration clock at any point in 2011.
Unless something changes, Girardi would be content with just one backup OF in Andruw Jones and have Nunez and Pena around to spell A-Rod and Jeter when the team has a safe enough lead in late innings. Chavez / Belliard would both need to have an outstanding and injury free March to be considered.
Chamberlain better be serious about his status. Quietly, Girardi and Rothschild are closely watching Phelps, Warren, and Brackman and Mark Prior if healthy, will get long looks.

  6. Bronx Jeers February 20th, 2011 at 9:38 am

Ask him if his new house still has that “new house smell” or if he thinks living so close to salt water can effect his swing.

  7. trisha - true pinstriped blue February 20th, 2011 at 9:38 am

Does anyone find these press conferences compelling? I bet they are as boring for Chad as they are for the members of the press who will be unable to unearth anything juicy – try though they might.

  8. blake February 20th, 2011 at 9:40 am

    Ys,
Why does the NBA seem to have no problem with that format? I really don’t see how its that big a deal when they don’t even know which two teams will be in the WS until the week before.

  9. Ruby Tuesday February 20th, 2011 at 9:40 am

Hello . Hello . Fellow Yankee fans .

Any more injuries to report from Spring Training camp today ?

  10. tyanksfan36 February 20th, 2011 at 9:42 am

I’m heading up to the stadium right now. Pretty excited.

  11. Ys Guy February 20th, 2011 at 9:43 am

phelps, warren, brackman and prior dont have joba’s track record and wont displace him on the roster. joba had a pretty good year last year and it got better as the season went on. they are not going to replace him with someone who out-performs him in ST.

  12. BJ in the Bronx February 20th, 2011 at 9:45 am

Jeter must be elated when this yearly ritual is over and done with.

  13. Ys Guy February 20th, 2011 at 9:45 am

ruby, you wouldnt believe it. all your predictions came true yesterday, soriano broke his arm, sabathia’s velocity is down, tex admitted he’s a fake, jeter admitted the ricky martin thing, girardi revealed that he’s taking money from the cubbies to undermine the yankees franchise, arod admitted using designer ped’s and the steinbrenmners announced they had more money in madoff than the wilpons did.

….just trying to make your day brighter!

  14. Fran the original February 20th, 2011 at 9:45 am

Derek’s answers seem exactly what I would expect. You could pretty much write the answers before the press conference begins.

  15. trisha - true pinstriped blue February 20th, 2011 at 9:46 am

“Any more injuries to report from Spring Training camp today ?”

Yes. Your eyes were seen popping out of your head, your tongue was dislodged from your throat, and someone saw your being kicked up Steinbrenner Blvd. But since you can’t be at today’s game, I can tell you the final score.

    27-7

    Awwww, you lost again.

  16. trisha - true pinstriped blue February 20th, 2011 at 9:47 am

Fran, TurboTax stopped me in my tracks, the free version anyway.

    :(

  17. Doreen February 20th, 2011 at 9:47 am

The press conference format for guys like Jeter and Arod just reduces the locker-room jam and the redundancy of questions.

It’s kind of a necessary evil for those guys.

  18. trisha - true pinstriped blue February 20th, 2011 at 9:48 am

It’s got to be so boring for them too. But part of the job.

  19. BJ in the Bronx February 20th, 2011 at 9:48 am

tyanksfan36 thats pretty cool you will be there in person. How long are you down there for or do you live there?

  20. trisha - true pinstriped blue February 20th, 2011 at 9:48 am

    She lives there. Even cooler.

  21. blake February 20th, 2011 at 9:49 am

I don’t think they need both Nunez and Pena. They play the same positions and Nunez is a better hitter. Ideally Id like to see Chavez show them he has something left and carry him to back up Alex and Teixera. Neither Pena or Nunez has any first base experience to my knowledge….. Nunez, Chavez, Jones, and.Cervelli/Montero would have every position covered.

  22. BJ in the Bronx February 20th, 2011 at 9:52 am

trisha what is the sense of a supposed free version? If they make you go through the free trial and then want to charge you it isn’t free or was it a demo only? Sounds like a crock that makes you waste your time till you get to the end no?

  23. BIG AL February 20th, 2011 at 9:52 am

    Trisha -

Unless you have extremely difficult taxes, using the Turbo tax deluxe version is very easy, and accurate. Paying $60 for Turbo Tax is far less than your accountant will charge you. I did my taxes for 2 years with Turbo Tax, as well as going to an accountant, and when they came out the same 2 years in a row, I dropped the accountant. The only thing free with Turbo Tax is the simply filing, where you don’t list deductions.

  24. Rich in NJ February 20th, 2011 at 9:53 am

Jeter could be a great press secretary for POTUS or even a skilled nuclear arms negotiator because he never reveals very much.

  25. BJ in the Bronx February 20th, 2011 at 9:53 am

If Chavez makes the team won’t he and then Swisher be the two to backup Tex?

  26. blake February 20th, 2011 at 9:54 am

    AL,

I read last night that you were a Duke fan…..and I thought we were friends. I realize you haven’t been south all that long but in case you were misinformed, the correct shade of blue is of the lighter variety ;)

  27. Fran the original February 20th, 2011 at 9:56 am

Trisha, just sent you an email about the taxes.

Doreen, went shopping for a computer yesterday. I got prices of other computers and will go the the Apple store tomorrow. I always like to shop around and find out specs to compare, but I really know what I have my heart set on.

  28. blake February 20th, 2011 at 9:57 am

Yea Swisher can back up Tex but I doubt they want to do that on a regular basis. You really don’t want a regular at a position being your only back up for another position ideally. Chavez would be a great fit if he’s healthy and even 2/3 of the player he used to be.

  29. Fran the original February 20th, 2011 at 9:58 am

    Big Al,

I have used Turbo Tax for the last 2 years as well and was very happy with it. There is also another free site, TaxAct, which has gotten very good reviews.

  30. Cashman needs to go February 20th, 2011 at 9:58 am

    Regarding turbo tax..

if you actually use the non free one you can input all of your information WITHOUT having to pay…it will calculate everything you need and then if/when you want to submit it is when you have to pay..

so you can actually compare it to what your accountant does without having to pay…you can save it on turbo tax and then delete it if you don’t care to pay/submit…

turbo tax also lets you “experiment” with scenarios (like if you want to include the $2,000 donation you made to the goodwill or the weekly church basket) ..

    good luck either way..

I take it you root for UNC. I’m not a crazy college BB fan, and follow Duke, UNC and NC State. Wake Forest has hit upon hard times. I follow and root for the Knicks, you talk about being a fan in hard times.

  32. Rich in NJ February 20th, 2011 at 10:00 am

I don’t think Chavez will make the team and if he does, he’s likely won’t stick for long.

  33. tyanksfan36 February 20th, 2011 at 10:01 am

Wow, the stadium doesn’t open until 11 and there is already a huge line of people and the parking lot is packed. I think I’m just going to find a good spot for BP and not move too much.

  34. NYY626 - Andy in 2011 February 20th, 2011 at 10:01 am

iId love to pick Jeter’s brain and hear the sarcastic responses he really wants to give to the same old boring questions every time. Sometimes his snark comes out ( especially during Kim Jones interviews) and he’s very funny (IMO). My favorite jeter answer of recent memory was when Kim was asking him about his SI cover:

Kim: Derek did you really stand outside yankee stadium in your uniform
Jeter: No Kim, I was naked and they photoshopped it on.

    :P

  35. blake February 20th, 2011 at 10:02 am

    Fran -

Good morning. I think some folks get confussed when they read FREE, it’s free if they do the simple version, where you don’t itemize, but, it is still a great product, and I no longer have to give an accountant $350 to do what I can in less than a hour. I’ll look at that other site as well, thanks for that info.

  37. blake February 20th, 2011 at 10:05 am

    Rich,

I really don’t know how.healthy Chavez is or what he’s got left if so…..if there is.something left in the tank though I think he’s a good fit with that short porch. We ‘ll see how.he looks soon.

I follow them all, but favor Duke. UNC has a very good young team, and if they don’t win the ACC this year, which I doubt, they should be much tougher next season.

I think the problem is going to come with itemized deductions. I had some business income last year – not much – and when I tried to put it under business income it told me to take out my credit card. Now that I’m thinking about it I probably could have just faked it out as a W2 and just put in the income part.

I have business deductions. Since I didn’t get that far I don’t know if it is going to let me itemize.

When I come home from my walk (that I really would rather forego but Brian was not to be dissueded and I have to be on my death bed before I will cry uncle…) I will go back to TurboTax and try again. If not, I’ll go to Tax Act.

    *************

Big Al, it’s as much a sentimental thing as anything. My tax accountant is the one my dad always went to, and he really loved my dad and vice versa. The guy never had a good relationship with his father and always went to my father for advice. Plus my brothers go to him too. I do trust him. But I just wanted to see if our figures would end up matching.

    ***************

BJ in the Bronx, I think it you have pretty simple taxes, it is a great thing to use because it does do all the work for you.

    *****************

Cashman needs to go, do you think that it’s devious to do it that way? Or do you think they expect it? I didn’t do it because I knew I wasn’t going to use their service. I’m pretty moral that way. Now, if you can come up with a persuasive argument that would allow me to use it with a clear conscience, I might consider it.

    :)

Check you all out after I defrost from my walk. It is COLD and WINDY.

    :(

  46. blake February 20th, 2011 at 10:15 am

    AL,

you can get them online….usually expensive though. I’ve only been to one Duke/UNC game and that was at UNC….never been to one at Cameron…..that is a tough get. I go at least once a year if I can.

    TY-36

Stay either on the main field for the infield / outfield / batting practice or the field behind the World Trade Center Memorial with split groups for both.
Pitchers work on the 2 diamonds off the left field area.

  49. Cashmoney February 20th, 2011 at 10:20 am

the last ‘decent’ season chavez had was 2007 when he compiled a 779 OPS vs rhp. A long way back just to mediocrity after three injury riddled years.

  50. Ys Guy February 20th, 2011 at 10:22 am

aao, yes, joba could pitch his way off this team in-season, but not in ST. and thats the way it should be. ST is not a real judge of what a pitcher is going to do in-season. solid mlb stats from last year far outweigh ST stats and it should be that way.

“Because of injuries again? I believe he was injured often when he was in Oakland.”

IMO, injuries, and the time off from the injuries, have eroded his skills.

    I hope I’m wrong.

  53. Erica in NY February 20th, 2011 at 10:28 am

    Trisha-

When you tried putting in business income Turbo Tax rpobably thinks you were doing a full schedule C. If you aren’t going to take any business deductions, then put it in under miscellaneous income. Do not put it in as a W-2 (the governent matches up SSNs against employer filings. You’ll spit out an error)

I’m not saying you’re wrong but why did the Yankees use the ST competition to determine Joba was no longer a candidate for the rotation. At the time I thought it was foolish to use ST to make a judgment on Joba’s career going forward.

  56. Cashmoney February 20th, 2011 at 10:34 am

” Chavez would earn a base salary of $1.5 million if he makes the Yankees roster. He has the potential to make an additional $700,000 based on time spent on the roster and $3.4 million in performance-based incentives.”

No thanks to that salary. Cashman could had guys like F.Lopez, Inglett for a fraction of that prize but with more assurances. C seldom put together a competent bench pre season, I guess i will wait for mid season acquisitions again.

  57. 4 NYY February 20th, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Chavez won’t last 10 days before something goes wrong with him. All of the juice he’s used is now coming home to roost. ( has been for a few yrs. )

The “Dominican Milkshake” is a staple there like so many other places. These guys that have become so injury prone are mostly abusers of peds.

Check the disabled list rate back 30 yrs. ago compared to now. I don’t remember hearing of hardly (if any) any hip surgeries then.

Sad, but true, today’s players have spit on the game.
