Getting started in Tampa

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Feb 20, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The first full workout is in full swing here in Tampa.

Half of the infielders are taking grounders on the main field. That’s where Derek Jeter and Eduardo Nunez are side by side, alternating reps at shortstop.

All of the outfielders and half of the infielders are on the back field. That’s where Alex Rodriguez and Brandon Laird are taking turns fielding grounders at third.

The outfielders are split in two groups. Half are in left field catching fly balls off a bat. The other half are in center field, making running catches on balls thrown over their shoulder.

Half of the catchers are in the bullpen. The other half are going through drills with Tony Pena and Butch Wynegar.

    Betsy,

    An honest question….

You obviously feel the “mediots” (your words) deserve the wrath of your criticism whenever they take a negative slant regarding the Yanks.

So why is it okay for you to constantly criticize media writers for their negativity regarding the Yankee organization but it’s not okay for Lohudders to criticize YOUR negativity day after day?

    Seems rather hypocritical.

  2. Betsy February 20th, 2011 at 12:18 pm

So you felt it was that important that you had to repost it. I’m sure it’s a genuine question, but since I also feel you are trying to start something, I’m genuinely not interested in answering it.

Odds, yes I know Cashman said that – I’m just curious who they are. That’s inexcusable. I’m no Joba fan, but I don’t think it’s fair that he take the blame when the other overweight players didn’t get named. He said that the ? fans should be asking is if this is a good team – that’s not very positive to me.

True Joba did get singled out by Cashman. I don’t know how true it is but Buster Onley was on Kay’s show and said the Yankees read Joba the riot act for coming into camp the way he did.

I can’t stand Sherman he always comes off as a Yankee hater to me. I remember him and Joe G getting into a back and forth a couple of yes ago. He even had a little back and forth with Joba when the weight thing exploded. Sherman seems like a guy that will keep pushing until he gets the answer he wants.

  4. Giuseppe Franco February 20th, 2011 at 12:24 pm

Good grief. That’s the kind of stuff I’m talking about. You always play that game.

I reposted it simply because it was the last comment before Chad added the next thread. Just like I would have reposted ANY comment regardless of topic. We ALL do that.

You get irritated when writers take negative slants regarding the Yanks but you obviously don’t realize that you irritate fellow LoHudders when you do the very same thing here day after day.

  5. Ys Guy February 20th, 2011 at 12:27 pm

its unbelievable to me that you people would pick apart a column in which sherman backs up cashman’s view of the yankees practically in lockstep. you really have to be paranoid to see that as negative toward the yankees.

  6. LGY February 20th, 2011 at 12:31 pm

    Betsy

The purpose of Sherman’s article was to point out that the fans are asking the wrong question. The question should be whether this is a good team overall, not simply is this a good rotation. Because as he showed in years past a rotation does not define a team. The entire composition is the only thing that truly matters.

    7. How much of that second-half drop-off was not being able to put hitters away after you got them in pitcher’s counts?

It basically just boils down to being able to command all four of my pitches. A lot of times I didn’t have trouble getting to those good counts. But it is putting the guys away. I think that stems from the fact that they really didn’t have anything else in their mind. They could take a first pitch strike and basically feel comfortable just seeing two speeds. Maybe a cutter mixed in here and there, but even my cutter fell apart in the second half. So I really have to focus on it, especially this spring, getting my changeup going, making sure my cutter’s consistent and being able to throw a get-me-over curveball and a put-away curveball.

    8. Is it different to be in here at this time of year without having to fight for a spot like the last couple of years?

I’ve said this a few times already, but I try to look at it like I’m still fighting for a spot. The feeling for me isn’t any different. I don’t want to be complacent. I don’t want to feel like it’s just there for me and that I don’t have to compete and work hard to pitch here. Last time, I felt like I had a spot chalked up. It was 2008. Injuries, ineffectiveness, whatever else, it was just a disastrous year for me. So I don’t want to get that creeping in my head, like ‘Ah, this is there, it’s yours’ or whatever. I want it to really feel like this is a competition. Whether it’s there or not, there is always something behind the thought that there’s always somebody trying to take your job.

    9. Given the state of the rotation, do feel any added responsibility this season?

I don’t think it’s an issue in all honesty. We can only control one game at a time, one start at a time. Every guy that takes the hill on any given day, we expect to win, whether it’s CC or whether it’s our four or five guy. That, I don’t think is an issue. You can only pitch the game that you’re out there. With (Ivan) Nova and the other arms in camp, I think we legitimately have a chance to have a good rotation. Whether other people think that or not, you always have to be confident in what you have. These are the cards that we have, we’re going to work hard, and we’re going to out there knowing that we can win every game that we pitch.”

  8. SJ44 February 20th, 2011 at 12:32 pm

    Sherman isn’t a Yankee hater.

In fact, his reporting has been far and away the most accurate reporting by any local or national baseball columnist re: the Yankees the past two years.

Is he overly aggressive at times? That’s something I’d wish he would ease off of because it’s probably holding him back from getting a bigger gig.

Re: Posada and the story Pat posted in the other thread……..

    This is serious stuff.

Dave Duerson, the former Bears and Giants safety, killed himself the other day in Miami.

In his suicide note, he asked that his brain be donated to the Boston University program that is doing research on head trauma.

He was exhibiting early symptoms of Premature Brain Failure. He was only 50 years old.

It’s why I’m hoping Jorge catches zero games this year. He’s given enough of his body to the team.

I hope he takes to the DH spot and continues to be the mentor he has been to young catchers.

  9. Betsy February 20th, 2011 at 12:34 pm

Well, we know you do a good Charlie Brown impression. GF, I don’t owe you anything. I know how you feel about me, so tell me again why I’m going to spend any time answering any of your questions?

  10. Betsy February 20th, 2011 at 12:36 pm

SJ, wow that’s depressing. I knew he died, but I didn’t read any of the articles on it because I’ve just been too busy…….now I’m glad I didn’t. Premature Brain Failure – I don’t know exactly what that means, but the ramifications are obviously not good. Oh boy…..

  11. LGY February 20th, 2011 at 12:36 pm

Sherman was also saying that even if you want to evaluate the rotation right now it doesn’t make sense to do so in February.

It was a positive and realistic article to counter all the doom and gloom journalism surrounding the Yanks this winter

  12. pat February 20th, 2011 at 12:37 pm

    SJ

You should forward Klapish’s column to Tony as a reminder to listen to his body.

  13. Rich in NJ February 20th, 2011 at 12:38 pm

Yeah, Dave Duerson’s death is heartbreaking and should be an eye opener for both the NFL and NFLPA as they divide up billions of dollars. You’d think a significant percentage of the revenue could go to taking care of former players that need help and increasing research on preventing and ameliorating head injuries.

Soon Gammons will come from Fort Myers where “his Socks” are and stroll into GMS Field to search out Cashman and attempt to sniff out information of what the Yankees are doing.
In past years, Cashman has been gracious enough to say a few words then suddenly go to another field as Gammons follows him around like a puppy dog.

  15. West Coast Yankee Fan February 20th, 2011 at 12:38 pm

Thanks for posting that Betsy. What I read convinces me more than ever that Phil Hughes is mature beyond his years and has the right attitude and demeanor to succeed in New York. He handles the press well, is appropriately self-deprecating and intensely committed to succeed.

That attitude in combination with his superb physical abilities is why Hughes is so highly thought of and I have no doubt he has all the tools to be a top-of-the-rotation starter for years to come.

  16. Crawdaddy February 20th, 2011 at 12:40 pm

I just read Sherman’s article and I didn’t think it was a negative one towards the Yankees. Also, I think he’s one best baseball writer covering the Yankees and is fairer to them than most of the other writers.

  17. Betsy February 20th, 2011 at 12:44 pm

WC, I like his attitude best out of everything. I’ve always believed if you work hard, there’s nothing you can’t do – and I love how Phil has the attitude almost of ” don’t look back as something might be gaining on you”. Joe and Cash seemed rather suprised that Phil would think he’d not have a spot locked up, lol. So, I’m not going to spend anytime worrying about him……I’ll just assume he’ll pitch well.

  18. Giuseppe Franco February 20th, 2011 at 12:48 pm

    Betsy,

You answered my question with that reaction. You’ve reinforced the “victim” label.

  19. Ys Guy February 20th, 2011 at 12:48 pm

espn has a red sox bias

they also have a yankees bias

but more than anything they have a bias towards making money and they do a great job of feeding that bias by giving the yankees and socks about 60% of all the baseball coverage they do.

just try to follow someone on the pirates or mariners if you dont believe me

yankee fans complaining about an espn bias are the equivilent of rs fans b*tching about the yankees payroll, imo

I read the Sherman piece twice, and could not find where he made those comments about Phil. Betsy, why the need to lie about the article?

  21. SJ44 February 20th, 2011 at 12:50 pm

    Pat,

    I just did.

Jorge has talked to Tony this off-season about this, and other issues.

When Tony first got hit last year (prior to breaking his jaw), I insisted he be examined bynthe TB Bucs team doctor for a concussion. The trainer on his team disagreed, believing he had not suffered a concussion.

His agent and I pressed the Pirates harder and they agreed to have him examined. Sure enough, he suffered a minor concussion.

Thankfully, he didn’t suffer another on the pitch that broke his jaw.

In consulting with several of the past and present Yankee players I know, along with his agent, I devised a different off-season program for him.

First, push to have him play in the AFL. The Pirates obliged. I wanted this because I felt he needed to get back in the batters box and start playing again. I didn’t want him to go from June until ST 2010 to step in the box and face live pitching again. Mentally, that did wonders for him and helped shake off the rust.

Second, his workouts were more cardio based rather than baseball based. Basically, take it easy on the baseball activities.

Since his junior year at BC, it’s been virtually non-stop baseball for him. I felt he needed a break from it.

I felt he would gain more this off-season by staying in shape and getting his mind right by talking to established major leaguers on what it takes to go to the next level.

Third, I hadmhim get Lasix surgery. His contacts were bothering his eyes and I felt he was becoming too preoccupied with them.

    The results of all this?

He looks better than he has in two years. He’s swinging the bat great, throwing well, and the fun is back in his game.

His weight is back to pre-injury levels and his body fat is down. He’s primed for a big season.

Sometimes, you have to a take a step back in order to take two steps forward. I’m hoping that’s the cases with him this season.

  22. Betsy February 20th, 2011 at 12:51 pm

Maybe you should read the article and my post better, AL. I said he implied it -why don’t you go read it again?

  23. Joe from Long Island February 20th, 2011 at 12:52 pm

    Good day, all –

    1. I think Joel Sherman has been very professional over the years. He’s got good sources, and what he reports looks to be accurate. He gives his opinions in his columns, and tries to generate honest discussion of the points he brings up, which tend to be rooted in something factual. Personally, I think he ranks up there with Jack Curry, with Tyler Kepner a close third.

Chad justs needs some more experience on the beat, and he also will rank as a “senior statesman”, so to speak. I’ve enjoyed reading Chad’s reporting, and his columns/opinion/analysis pieces.

    2. The NFL is very slowly coming to grips with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Dave Duerson is the latest tragedy. I agree, this is yet one more reason why Jorge needs to hang up his catching gear. At this point in his career, there’s no reason for him to take chances. He’s already written his catching legacy as one of the Yankees’ best.

  24. Bronx Jeers February 20th, 2011 at 12:54 pm

When I read about these studies on chronic traumatic encephalopathy I wonder if one day we’ll be following the NFFL.

    The National Flag Football League.

  25. Giuseppe Franco February 20th, 2011 at 12:55 pm

    SJ,

Good luck to Tony this season, health wise as well as his on the field progress. We’re all rooting for him.

It’s got to be the thrill of a lifetime to see someone that close to you living a dream.

  26. BIG AL February 20th, 2011 at 12:57 pm

    Betsy -

OK, you win. No one else read that from the article but you, that’s fine, as long as you believe it to be true, it is for you.

  27. Joe from Long Island February 20th, 2011 at 12:59 pm

SJ – you may be great at what you do, but, you should take a course in medical terminology, lol. Lasix is a diuretic. Lasik (or however the heck the spell it) is laser surgery performed on the eyes, lol.

Whatever your nephew had, we hope he has a good result and gets on with his life and career.

  28. SJ44 February 20th, 2011 at 1:03 pm

    Thanks GF.

It’s an important year for him.

Both catchers in Pittsburgh are FA’s at the end of the year.

They have a ton of young pitching in the pipeline. Many of whom he has already caught and has developed a solid rapport with them the past two years.

If he plays well, he could be knocking at the door to the big leagues at this time next year.

That, and an injury free season, are the goals for this season.

  29. Giuseppe Franco February 20th, 2011 at 1:04 pm

Helmet/head gear technology in general has progressed significantly over the last 10-15 years.

But players are getting bigger, stronger, and faster every year so it’s nearly impossible to develop head gear that can withstand the kind of punishment these guys take (especially, football) week after week.

  30. SJ44 February 20th, 2011 at 1:05 pm

    Yeah, lol, thanks Joe.

Well, at least he’s healthy as a horse now!

  31. Ys Guy February 20th, 2011 at 1:08 pm

i dont understand why more catchers haven’t gone from the ‘face mask’ to the mask/helmet like hockey goalies did. i played some goalie as a kid and i think it was vladamir tretiak who came over with the soviet team wearing the helmet and i went and got one as soon as i saw one available. even to a teenager it seemed logical that the helmet was better at deflection the blow of a face shot.

  32. Bronx Jeers February 20th, 2011 at 1:13 pm

Didn’t Troy Aikman say that they should take away the helmets. I think he was only halfway joking but it makes sense in a twisted logic sort of way.

I do think the NFL needs to start handing out suspensions for those malicious head on head hits.

  33. Dionysius Thelxinoe February 20th, 2011 at 1:13 pm

GF, speaking for myself, the only irritating part of this blog are the posts directed at personal criticism of another poster.

I think Sherman is one of the more objective guys writing in NY right now…I don’t always agree with him but that’s ok. I don’t think consumers care as much about the opinion as they do the reasoning behind it.

Concussion are serious business and the medical field is just scratching the surface on their long term affects….I think it could be a significant issue for the NFL in the future as more research is done.

Interesting note from Sweeny Murti this AM on wfan. Early this week, Granderson asked something like — hey you’d know this better than me, when do we take our physicals?

I don’t think responsible journalists like Chad Jennings believe in skewing or omitting the facts to accommodate his readers. And IMO if you took a vote you would find that the majority here wouldn’t want him to.

Cano was late to camp. That’s a fact. There was no editorial bias or judgment in the headline.

That means there is no target on their backs. Let the Red Sox play with the target. I think it’s a lot harder that way.

  54. trisha - true pinstriped blue February 20th, 2011 at 1:53 pm

Ys Guy, I was only telling Chad that I thought adding the stuff about a day late wasn’t really necessary. But you know how it is with the written word. Sometimes is doesn’t translate exactly the way the writer wants it to. And you are right that he was late.

I guess I’m sensitive to the tendency of some posters to automatically put a suspicious spin on unknown things as opposed to giving the benefit of the doubt. So people did that with Mo coming late also. You’d think they’d figure that Mo of all people wouldn’t ever try to pull a prima donna act.

I like you too Ys Guy. In fact when you said your former screen name was CM Vase it made me laugh. I remembered always thinking that anyone who pulled that for a screename had to be pretty with it.

Fran I absolutely agree. This will be the first time I remember in forever that the Yanks will be playing without the primary target on their backs. (There will always be people who think that the Yankees are overly privileged and will always be guning for them.)

I seem to recall you mentioning it awhile back. I’m very much looking forward to reading it.

I’m curious if anyone has read the latest Mantle book. I was at Borders the other day and browsed through it briefly. Didn’t buy it because it’s cheaper to buy it on Amazon.

Trish, people (not just players) don’t like it when other people put them down – they tend to take it personally. If the Yankees thrive off of that, that’s great – though it will still come down to pitching.

  60. m February 20th, 2011 at 1:58 pm

That headline was not only factual, it was actually mild. One if your best position players is a no-show was the story and buzz of the day.

Can you imagine what would happen if that was Alex? He’d better wear fireman gear! ;)

one thing i do try to do if i have an objection to someone’s view is i usually try to leave the other poster’s name out of it and debate the point and not the poster. often its not the disagreement that is the problem, its the name-calling that goes with it.

i should try to tone down my debating and i’d urge others to de-personalize thier criticisms of other’s posts. after all we are (almost) all yankees fans in the end!

“They have a $200 million payroll,” manager Terry Francona said. “They’re not too underdog-ish.”

Terry apparently isn’t informed about his own team’s payroll…

  69. m February 20th, 2011 at 2:03 pm

Ugh. Again with the payroll. I’ve heard Francona’s a good guy. And funny, too. But that kind of snarky crap is irritating.

  70. trisha - true pinstriped blue February 20th, 2011 at 2:03 pm

Y’s Guy, I don’t ever remember you doing anything that could even approach inflammatory or controversial. Just keep being yourself. And I think your approach is a good one. Seriously.

    :)

  71. trisha - true pinstriped blue February 20th, 2011 at 2:06 pm

mel, I was really surprised that Francona went there. I agree that it was snarky and unnecessary, and also pretty glass house-ish of him, especially this year!

blake, your post is exactly the reason that I haven’t been all agog about the Suxers team, even with their new additions. It’s too convenient for people to forget that Beckett, Lackey, and Dice-K had very mediocre seasons last year, and that Papelbum had his struggles too.

    joeman,

maybe, but if we’re believing that then don’t you also have to believe AJ will as well? I think Beckett may bounce back a little but I think 2010 is pretty much what Lackey and Dice K are at this point. Boston’s staff is better on paper than the Yankees right now but they aren’t the 2nd best in the AL based on actual recent performance. I’d put ChiSox and Rays ahead of them.

  74. West Coast Yankee Fan February 20th, 2011 at 2:07 pm

It’s just the usual Yankees and Red Sox banter between the players and management. I love to hear it.

  75. Fran the original February 20th, 2011 at 2:07 pm

The Mets have a high payroll and they are not expected to do anything this season. It’s not all about the payroll. It’s about the players performing on the field.

  76. blake February 20th, 2011 at 2:09 pm

and….I think its entirely possible that the Yankees will get comparable production from 3-5 in their rotation that Boston does from theirs……at a fraction of the cost.

If you’re going to automatically give guys like Beckett, Lackey, and Dice K the benefit of the doubt then it would only be fair to give Burnett the same benefit.

Those three have been trending down the last few years. Last year’s results weren’t exactly freakish or plain old bad luck..

  82. SJ44 February 20th, 2011 at 2:14 pm

Why will every Red Sox question mark be answered in the affirmative?

Beckett has chronic back and shoulder issues.

Meaning, it isn’t going to “get better”. He will just have to deal with the pain and discomfort.

Lackey has been on a three year decline.

    Dice-K is a 5 inning, 100 pitch pitcher.

Frankly, Freddie Garcia is a better starter than Dice-K.

I love the fact the media has annointed the Red Sox as the “chosen team”.

It will be interesting to see how they handle it.

    Betsy,

It’s been in Denver’s hands all along. Melo is not a FA. If he wants to choose where he goes, he can wait until after the season.

I thought all along that the Nets were simply trying to drive up the price for the Knicks, kind of like the game the Yanks and Red Sox play. Still think he goes to the Knicks.

  91. m February 20th, 2011 at 2:20 pm

Talking about another team’s payroll is like talking about what your neighbor makes. Just don’t go there!

He could easily have said “how can they be underdogs with that lineup?”. But if course the Yankees payroll is an obsession for anyone not on the Yankees.

Make no mistake about it. Theo Epstein is deeply concerned with what happens if and when any of his 1-5 starting pitcher’s go down. They have zero depth in their farm system to call on making Wakefield the only solution. It’s why Aceves was gambled on.
Cashman did well in stocking arms with minor league contracts plus the up and coming young arms. They can’t all work out but the old adage ……… there’s strength in numbers applies for the Yankees.
The Rays have more starter depth than Boston does.

  95. m February 20th, 2011 at 2:24 pm

    Fran,

Denver is better off making a deal. They won’t let him walk. The egreged team doesn’t get draft picks like baseball.

But they’re so dumb to play the two NY teams against each other. Just send Melo where he wants. He’s never given them less than his best.

  96. Betsy February 20th, 2011 at 2:24 pm

Fran, Melo is the one with the leverage because if he refuses to sign an extension with NJ or wherever, then Denver has the option of getting nothing while they hold onto him or getting very minimal value from a team willing to rent.

  97. Betsy February 20th, 2011 at 2:26 pm

M, the Nuggets are undoubtedly only dealing with the Knicks grudgingly; I don’t think they ever wanted to give him what he wanted…….which is the Knicks. Now he also wants his guaranteed $$, so if he wants that more, he will end up with the Nets. Denver really doesn’t like what the Knicks have to offer – that’s really what it comes down to.

  98. blake February 20th, 2011 at 2:27 pm

“Make no mistake about it. Theo Epstein is deeply concerned with what happens if and when any of his 1-5 starting pitcher’s go down. They have zero depth in their farm system to call on making Wakefield the only solution. It’s why Aceves was gambled on.”

yup and he’s said as much recently. They have nothing after the 5 in the rotation and 3 of those are big injury risks. There are significant cracks beneath the surface with the Red Sox that Gonzalez and Crawford have blinded people to. I’m not saying the stars can’t align for them and they have a great season because that’s certainly possible…..but its not likely.

He did meet with the Nets last night and the Nets didn’t come away encouraged, but then who knows ? If and when Denver rejects the Knicks, Melo will have to make the decision………

Well, he can still make some $$$ back in endorsements and some say that he won’t lose as much as maybe he thinks. Still, he doesn’t want to be in NJ – that’s clear. If he chooses the $$ over his personal happiness, he may regret it down the line. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

the 5 best bets I would pick….(and disclaimer this isn’t worth much: ) but I’d go

Yankees (over)- I think they clear 91 easy
Oakland (over)- won 81 last year and should have Anderson healthy and have added bats
ChiSox (over)- won 88 last year and should be better in 2011
Dodgers (over)- too much talent for them to win 82 games.
Seattle (under)- 61 wins last year….don’t see them making up 9 games.

it was pretty good as long as the crazies on here didnt just start going off on them like idiots.

  125. G-C February 20th, 2011 at 3:41 pm

As a Nets fan this entire saga has become a complete joke on so many levels.

That being said, I remain confident that Anthony will be a Net when all of the dust settles.

The Nuggets have very, very little incentive to do the Knicks deal. Chandler is a restricted FA after this year- e.g., why would the Nuggets want any part of him? Felton is largely the same player he was last year aside from his D’Antoni inflated numbers. Check some of his Hollinger statistics and you’ll see that he’s gone from a slightly underrated player to one of the game’s most overrated players. In a different system, there’s no indication that he WOULDN’T revert back to being much of the same player he was with the Bobcats. Plus, they already have Lawson, who is a much better long term prospect anyway.

Point being, I don’t see any reason why the Nuggets should feel inclined to make this deal. It essentially looks to me like a 1 for 1 deal, Gallinari for Melo. If you want to ignore Harris’s impact on the deal from Denver’s side simply because I did the same for Felton, the Nuggets are still getting a stud PF prospect and FOUR first round draft picks- the types of assets that can make you forget about losing a player of Melo’s caliber extremely quickly.

Denver should take a hard line stance and flat out tell him they aren’t trading him to New York. If he really decides he doesn’t want to come to Jersey and leaves as a FA, the Nuggets won’t be much worse off for not taking the Knicks deal anyway.

  126. blake February 20th, 2011 at 3:46 pm

I don’t have a dog in the Knicks/Nets fight but the Nuggets would have an incentive to trade him to the Knicks if Carmello flat out refuses to sign the extension with the Nets…..the Nuggets will then have to decide whether they want to deal him for something to the Knicks or lose him for nothing in free agency……..I think Melo wants to go to the Knicks and I think the Nuggets will reluctantly deal him there in the end.

I think it would be great if Sox fans would/could come here and have intelligent conversation….Ray used to come around, haven’t seen him in awhile.

  127. Ys Guy February 20th, 2011 at 3:48 pm

    G-C
doesnt it come down to the net’s offer being conditional that melo has to agree to an extention before the deal is done? and his refusal to sign?

i said earlier that i think he gave dolan the wink the other day basically dont trade the franchise for me, im not signing anywhere else.

best case for melo is to either stay in denver or go as a rental then sign with the knicks who didnt give up anything to get him, right? why should he want to go somewhere that just traded the francnhise to get him?

  128. trisha - true pinstriped blue February 20th, 2011 at 3:48 pm

mel, if you remember, Pete got rid of ER because he realized that his sole purpose here was to be disruptive and not to add anything to the mix. I’m not quite sure why Chad doesn’t do the same to Ruby Tuesday. Pete did the same thing to that idiot Bunny person. There’s a huge difference between fans from other teams coming here and talking up their teams to the detriment of the Yankees, and total idiots like Ruby hanging around here with the sole purpose of p*ssing people off by posting stupid little goading posts.

  129. G-C February 20th, 2011 at 3:51 pm

    Ys Guy,

That logic makes sense, but you’re omitting a very important point.

The strongest indication throughout all of this nonsense has been related to the new CBA. Basically, there is no way that Melo is willing to sacrifice potentially tens of millions of dollars in free agency. He won’t do it. Therefore, the whole idea of a “wink wink” with Dolan just isn’t logical. Money is this guy’s # 1 priority. He isn’t going to let himself be underpaid relative to the other stars in his draft class, and even relative to other guys who just cashed in on max deals (e.g., Rudy Gay). If the Nuggets tell him they flat out won’t trade him to the Knicks, I have no doubt that his hand will be forced and he’ll put pen to paper on that extension with NJ. Its the only thing that nets him the guaranteed money he craves without having to remain in the Rocky Mountains.

  130. Ys Guy February 20th, 2011 at 3:53 pm

i think ray dissappeared around the time that ortiz’s and manny’s ped use was a big topic. the hypocracy in here was stifling. i do remember he was cool and when it got a little crazy, he’d just say goodnight and come back a day or two later. good having that other perspective from a guy who liked his team as much as we liked ours.

    BTW–

I was happy to see SJ44′s comments about head trauma and desire for Jorge not to catch this year. I totlaly agree with himand was having this conversaion with another Yankee friend just the other night. It is a serious issue, and more needs to be done to protect these players (even agsint their own desires to catch)

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
