Send a kid to a game

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Feb 25, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Hi everyone, Chad here. Sam’s covering for me this weekend while I’m in a wedding back home in Missouri.

With games starting tomorrow, I just wanted to jump on the blog to post a reminder about an idea that started last spring when a reader named Mike Lawrence donated some extra Yankees spring training tickets to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa.

After Mike gave away two of his tickets, he heard back from BBBS.

Scott and I really appreciate the generosity of the individual donating those tickets. Scott loves sports but I don’t think he knew how packed that game was going to be until we got there. I think that was the spring training game of the year.

Seems like a great idea to me. If you have tickets, I hope you’re able to make it to the game. But if you can’t get to the stadium one day, you might as well use those tickets to send a kid to a game. Feel free to contact Mike or just contact BBBS directly.

Triple, I never did play the pen and pencil version. It’s a multi players game online. I find it challenging and fun. The graphic is top notch. But the.. it is kind of nerdy. heh, to each’s own.

    Repost

Not sure who exaclty wrote it but this came from a starting pitching guide that looks at all MLB teams major and minor league systems. Jason Collete,John Halpin,Tim Heaney,Zach Sanders and Mike Siano contributed to the guide

Manuel Banuelos (20, AA) ? An elite prospect, Banuelos has a slight frame at 5?10/155, but he packs a helluva punch with a 91-94 fastball that can touch as high as 96 with sink. Supplements the heat with a low-80s changeup that moves and a tight curveball that flashes plus, but is easily the least consistent of his offerings right now. I came away very impressed with him at the Rising Stars game during Arizona Fall League. He has #2 potential and is a must-draft across all formats with a minor league component. His curveball is ahead of Dellin Betances? changeup so I give him the slight edge overall as of now.

Dellin Betances (23, AA) ? This 6?8 behemoth rates just ahead of Banuelos at most outlets, but I?m taking a stand on Banuelos having seen him up close. That doesn?t mean I?m down on Betances by any stretch, though. With two plus pitches of his own, Betances starts out with a mid-90s fastball that just whips off of his large frame on a downward plane making it tough to square up in the clips I saw and follows it up with a ridiculously tight curve that, like the fastball, bears down on hitters thank to his size. His changeup is the missing piece of the puzzle at this point and without it, he can?t achieve his #2 starter potential. However, even without it he has a future as a dominant late innings reliever. Definitely a top tier minor league pick.

Andrew Brackman (25, AA) ? The third of the Killer B?s, Brackman is even taller than Betances at 6?10. He has a power curveball and mid-90s fastball combo that could succeed out of a major league bullpen right now, but his future is as a starter right now so the Yankees will continue to refine his changeup. If he gets it, his heavy curve and fastball combined with even a fringe changeup gives him #2 potential. Reports on him question the makeup a bit suggesting he could be one of those all-world talents who never quite delivers on the promise of his skills.

Brett Marshall (21, A+) ? Underrated at some outlets, Marshall has significant talent, but may get overlooked a bit because of his 6?0 frame and checkered injury history (TJ Surgery survivor). He has a plus two-seamer that sits low-90s touching 94, 95 with excellent movement. His changeup also dips and dives helping contribute to his above average groundball rate. The final piece to the puzzle would be adding consistency to his slider that he loses control of at times. Still at other times, it looks like a plus pitch giving him in three in all. Worth a pick now.

Adam Warren (23, AA) ? A cut below the three B?s, Warren is a hard-throwing righty with a four pitch repertoire in theory, though his breaking stuff is lagging well behind his fastball and changeup. He accumulates missed bats and groundballs with the low-to-mid 90s fastball thanks to above average control and plenty of movement on the pitch. His ultimate fate will be decided by the progression of his secondary pitches. The changeup is definitely passable right now, but neither the slider nor the curveball can be counted in with any level of consistency. Developing either breaking pitch to average or better could take Warren to ceiling as high as a #3. Otherwise, he has a definite future in the bullpen.

Jose Ramirez (21, A) ? Looked sharp in his first full season displaying a refined changeup, especially for a 20-year old. It sits 80-83 in contrast to his low-90s fastball that can reach 94-95 at times. He doesn?t get a ton of groundballs, but elevating him is tough as evidenced by his 0.2 HR/9 (just 3 in 115 IP). I?m a sucker for good changeups and if he can get his curveball working consistently, he has #3 starter upside.

Bryan Mitchell (20, A-) ? A raw, but talented high school product, Mitchell features a low-to-mid 90s fastball and power curveball, but lacks dominant command of either right now. He flashes a fringy changeup that needs more work than the command of his plus pitches, but at 20 with just one pro year under his belt, there is plenty of time. Worth speculating on if you can wait three years for the payoff.

Shaffer Hall (23, A+) ? Seems to be a fringe prospect as I couldn?t find a ton on him, but the stats were nice in his full season debut split even across A and High-A as he displayed impeccable control (1.4 BB/9) of his heavy arsenal (1.5 GO/AO ratio). He went nearly seven innings per start at A-Charleston before moving to High-A Tampa where his results weren?t as good, but the skills (namely his strikeout, walk and groundball rates) all improved. A deep sleeper.

I agree about Betances change. I have seen it in 3 games and it is a nasty swing and miss pitch. Maybe that is an old scouting report?

Banuelos charts higher than expected for his size and stuff because he’s a lefty, IMO.
    ________
The recently added velocity on the FB doesn’t hurt, especially for a lefty. The kid can pitch and has great command (the bump this year was him harnessing the new velo on FB, which he struggle with at first after coming back from the appendectomy.)

  6. yankeefeminista February 25th, 2011 at 12:58 pm

Sam, the Yankees have a program at NYS in place too where you can offer your tickets to charity through them. I think Boys and Girls Club. Contact them for info.

“Erica that’s right. The second and third films were abysmal….”

You ain’t kiddin’. Took Walton Goggins six years of the Shield to get the stink of Major League: Back to the Minors off of him. Careers of Scott Bakula, Corbin Bernsen and Ted McGinley? Not sure they ever recovered.

This is offbase. Dellin’s change is only missing from the viewpoint of hitters, who whiff on it. He commands it well and it just disappears on them. There’s no problem at all with his change, which he had the luxury of really going after when he was rehabbing. His only problem when I saw him was overthrowing the ball. He’s got 3 nasty pitches ready to go.

Of course that made me bawl. How about just donating some tickets? If any Yankee posters have a little extra dough and would like to make some kids happy, why not just buy a few tickets and donate them to the organization? I know not everyone has the wherewithal but isn’t it a beautiful thought? You know how much we love this team and how we would thrill to be at a game? Just imagine what it would do for some kid whose lot in life isn’t a really great one.

I’m going to set up some kind of challenge. I’m going to donate two tickets to Big Brothers Big Sister of Tampa. I challenge other Yankee posters to do the same, go one down, or go up as many as you want. (I don’t know if that’s how you set up a challenge, but consider donating a ticket or two to that worthy cause.)

yf…from what you’ve seen, is his velocity sustainable over a season, with his size? Or is he just gassing it all out? Can he keep that velocity up over a career? IMO he charts highly because he may be as good as many lefty relievers out there right now, like you say, he has the command and stuff. Size does matter, and exceptions prove rules. I’m trying to manage my own expectations, here – I don’t know how long he lasts throwing that hard, his mechanics better be flawless.

Hopefully he makes the club out of the pen and proves his ranking. Yanks have a stockpile of ML-ready lefties, because they are valuable and rare.

    _______
He has very sound mechanics and it is not like he is suddenly overthrowing. He worked on getting stronger while he was out. He is still young and growing, and he has added strength, so I don’t think the bump up in velocity is that surprising, even though it wasn’t anticipated. He is short, but he is stout and strong with a solid core. I would guess it is sustainable based on his effortlessness and good mechanics. However, we will find out.

There’s this idea he some raw-boned kid with no pitchability & that’s completely wrong. The great thing too is that he has the stuff to get away with going off the rail and that he seems to have become sensitive to his own derailment and can put himself back on track.

Banuelos projects as a starter. I can’t see our trading someone with that kind of value. Can you clarify as per the lefties in the pen and how that affects ManBan? I am unsure what you are saying here, but I see Manny continuing to start with a late stint out of the pen, but no way at this point are we are projecting him as a reliever long-term.

Also none of our lefty pitching prospects are anywhere near ManBan in talent or projectability at this point. Who are you referring to in our minor leagues, RE: previous remark about the myriad lefty pitching ‘specs we have? Bleich can’t compare with Banuelos, and there is nobody else at AA or higher.

    J. Alfred Prufrock February 25th, 2011 at 1:32 pm
Yep, his change as I said above is not just plus but swing and miss. He just needs to continue to repeat his mechanics. Hopefully, he picks up where he left off last year in Trenton. Of anyone I have seen since Hughes (C.Garcia was in that mix), Betances has the absolute best stuff. No contest.

    ///
yankfem – sometimes I think that because of his size and power that Betances is pretty misunderstood. He’s big with great stuff but he also has a feel for pitching. There’s this idea he some raw-boned kid with no pitchability & that’s completely wrong. The great thing too is that he has the stuff to get away with going off the rail and that he seems to have become sensitive to his own derailment and can put himself back on track.
    ___
Prufrock, bottomline, I think the current Betances isn’t the one that scouting report was referring to. It was the Betances before or coming back from the surgery. So, couldn’t agree more, and I think everyone is catching on to how good he is, vs. you, me, and the next prospect nerd, saying, “No, you don’t understand, this guy is a front-end of rotation pitcher.” But there is progress, few are putting him in trades anymore as that faceless 4th player, because now everyone seems to know who he is . So, let’s just hope he keeps repeating and delivering, which is what I expect he’ll do.

Jennifer Aniston has been in some good movies. Office Space, Friends With Money and The Good Girl spring to mind.

And for my guilty pleasure picks I’ll take Picture Perfect and Just Go With It

Friends With Money was NOT a good movie.

yf – To clarify, the Yanks have more major-league-ready (by that I include guys with ML exp.) lefties than they have had in recent memory. Maybe in 10 years? Can anyone remember when they had this many veteran lefties suited up plus a hot lefty prospect going into spring? I’m saying something has to give, Yanks have lefties stockpiled like catchers. You can only give lockers out to a limited number at a time. That said, I don’t see a 155-lb young lefty meaningfully projected as an impact starter for the NY Yankees. True, stranger things have happened and I’ll be the first to admit wrongness.

Agree on all Betances points, BTW. Kid has a smooth, on-top delivery and you can see focus in his face.

Chad, thanks again for posting this. The folks at the Big Brothers/Sisters of Tampa are great folks. We met a few last year when going to the games. A little background on the idea…

I’ve been fortunate enough to take my son (9) for the last few years to Tampa for a few days/games over his school break. He’s a huge Yankee/baseball fan and loves the trip. We discussed buying tickets for the games and I explained that not all folks are lucky enough to do this. We discussed purchasing extra tickets for the games and reached out the BBBS of Tampa. We’ve done that for the past few years now. This year we will not make it down as his break falls late, but we’ve sent along tickets to two games. Baseball is an incredible game and giving kids the chance to see it up close is a true gift. Tickets are relatively inexpensive and you are doing a wonderful thing.

Quick story – last year we sat next to the Big/Little that went to the game. We were near the bullpen and managed to get Mike Harkey (BP coach) to sign a hat and ball for him. Jermaine was on beyond excited. Truly reminds you that baseball is a kid’s game.

So, if you are able, please make the donation. You can buy on Ticketmaster and send the tickets via electronically. Stubhub has that option as well. Good luck and thank you for doing a great thing.

Trish, Great idea on the challenge.

    - Mike Lawrence

  108. LibertyBoy February 25th, 2011 at 1:58 pm

yf, I never said lefty “starters”, you did, and I clarified “MLB-ready” as meaning “any guy who can pitch in the MLB”, that includes Logan, Feliciano, Marte (like I said, he’s injured, but that may or may not affect tradeability b/c he’s a vet lefty with firm LOOGY creds), and yes, I am including Manny B in that. They could probably put him on the mound right now in the Bronx for an inning and he wouldn’t embarass them.

By my count, then, four ML-ready lefties in camp. Is that still not clear?

  109. LibertyBoy February 25th, 2011 at 2:00 pm

And when I say “Manny is a starter like Joba is a starter” I mean, HE A I N ‘ T a starter. And when I say he A I N ‘ T a starter, I mean he may get starts, but when the good Lord takes him from this earth, the tombstone will read, “Here Lies Manny Banuelos, An Excellent Lefty Reliever”.

  110. Betsy February 25th, 2011 at 2:02 pm

That wasn’t Sharktopus, that was Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus, lol. Classic – a shark leaping into the air to snatch a 747, lol……..even chomping down on the Golden Gate Bridge, lol
