Teixeira drops Boras as agent

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Mar 02, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Mark Teixeira just announced that he has dropped Scott Boras as his agent. With his contract secure, Teixeira wants to focus on charity work and thought it was best to let someone else handle that. He has not yet hired a new agent.

Also, Greg Golson was expected to get in today’s game, but he’s not listed in the Yankees lineup or as one of the bench players scheduled to play. He’s on the roster as “available” but it looks like he’ll wait another day before coming back from that fastball to the head.

Derek Jeter SS
Robinson Cano 2B
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Jorge Posada DH
Andruw Jones LF
Francisco Cervelli C
Colin Curtis RF

    Wow……….but, whatever makes Tex happy

  2. blake March 2nd, 2011 at 8:41 am

Have I mentioned that I love Robbie hitting 2nd…

  3. MTU March 2nd, 2011 at 8:43 am

    Blake-

    3 would be better.

    ;)

  4. Ys Guy March 2nd, 2011 at 8:46 am

the only thing cervelli has besides ‘dreamy eyes’ is obp. he’s not a good defender (at least he hasnt been in the majors) and has no power.

he could start for a handful of teams because those teams are either desparate or cheap.

i like him, but he has little trade value, maybe a ml middle releiver or a prospect losing his luster.

dont make him out to be some kind of chip. he isnt.

  5. blake March 2nd, 2011 at 8:47 am

    MTU,

    3 against righties
    2 against lefties.

  6. Cashmoney March 2nd, 2011 at 8:48 am

Golson may have a better arm than Burnett at this point.

  7. Mell March 2nd, 2011 at 8:49 am

Got no problem with Cano at #5. Damn near had an MVP season from there. Seems obvious that Teixeira is going to have to pretty deep in the tank to fall out of the 3 hole.

  8. Mell March 2nd, 2011 at 8:50 am

    * have to GO pretty deep in the tank….

  9. MTU March 2nd, 2011 at 8:51 am

    Blake-

    I see.

Giving Joe G. some competition for the matchup game.

    ;)

  10. blake March 2nd, 2011 at 8:51 am

    Mell,

I don’t either….just like that better. Don’t think it matters all that much really.

  11. blake March 2nd, 2011 at 8:53 am

Tex 3rd against lefties and 5th against righties.

  12. Cashmoney March 2nd, 2011 at 8:53 am

I like Granderson in the sixth spot against righties.

  13. MTU March 2nd, 2011 at 8:55 am

I think Angel Berroa should lead off.

    He has lots of experience.

    :)

  14. MTU March 2nd, 2011 at 8:56 am

    Julio Franco cleans up.

    :)

  15. MTU March 2nd, 2011 at 8:57 am

    But only against lefties.

    ;)

  16. Ys Guy March 2nd, 2011 at 8:57 am

ive always been in favor of a flexible lineup. it makes no sense that you bat april tex and july tex the same spot all the time.

but girardi and most other managers feel that the players cant handle being moved. (apparently you have to kiss thier a$$es as well as hand them the bi-monthly $2M checks)

anyway, i dont think we are going to see it anytime soon.

  17. Rich in NJ March 2nd, 2011 at 8:57 am

    Boras must feel so used.

  18. Cashmoney March 2nd, 2011 at 8:58 am

not bad, i will have Rickey on the bench as a pinch runner.

  19. Ys Guy March 2nd, 2011 at 8:58 am

what do you suppose the buyout fee is on a boras contract?

  20. Ys Guy March 2nd, 2011 at 8:59 am

sorry, those 7 figure checks come bi-weekly, not bi-monthly…

  21. blake March 2nd, 2011 at 8:59 am

Boras would probably rather spent his time on clients that still have a big deal coming anyway….

  22. MTU March 2nd, 2011 at 9:00 am

Yogi will be our BU Catcher.

The Man still has it. He can crouch just fine. It’s the getting up that gives him a bit of trouble.

    :)

  23. Mell March 2nd, 2011 at 9:01 am

“what do you suppose the buyout fee is on a boras contract?”

Not sure there would be one. He gets his percentage for the balance of Teixeira’s contract, no?

  24. MTU March 2nd, 2011 at 9:02 am

But he can simply throw from his knees.

Heck. He’s only in his Eighties. Plenty left.

    :)

  25. Cashmoney March 2nd, 2011 at 9:03 am

:) sounds good, one stipulation, he will be Mel Stottlemyre’s personal C.

  26. Ys Guy March 2nd, 2011 at 9:06 am

with all the rules protecting players rights: free agency, guaranteed contracts, ntc’s, rule V, minor league free agency etc. there is very little a team can decide about a player.

what they do have control over is to play or bench them, to move them in the batting order, or to change thier positions.

it seems like alot of teams have effectively surrendered those rights, too.

    except texas…

  27. Cashmoney March 2nd, 2011 at 9:07 am

Pena, Cervelli and Mitre, MTU, final offer! If they don’t pan out as MLers, Twinkie has the option of selling their services to Univision or Telemundo.

Pilot Episode “el fuego de Minnie’

  28. MTU March 2nd, 2011 at 9:07 am

And he’d just distract the hell out of most hitters talkin’ sh*t to them.

Yogi: Hey, See those funny white markings ?

    Player: yeah, so what ?

Yogi: That’s the batter’s box not your lunch box. You might want to get into it.

    Player: Says who ?

Yogi: See that guy back there with the mask. That’s who.

Player: Maybe I have different ideas. Any problem with that ?

Yogi: Go right ahead kid. it’s your show.

    :)

Liriano is going to end up a Yankee this year & could be before the end of ST…..

  30. blake March 2nd, 2011 at 9:11 am

SI_JonHeyman greinke, happy w/ brewers, tried earlier to convince #yankees to acquire him. team thought better of it. http://tinyurl.com/ 4dc9932

Then he should have convinced Moore to ask for less from them….

  31. Rich in NJ March 2nd, 2011 at 9:14 am

“what they do have control over is to play or bench them, to move them in the batting order, or to change thier positions.”

Teams have all the leverage early in a player’s career, and if they are good, once they are arbitration eligible, the leverage re-balances in favor of the the player, although that only last as long as the player is still good both offensively and defensively. As we have seen with players like Damon and Matsui, once you reach your mid-30s and you can no longer field your position well, you get a major paycut.

  32. Cashmoney March 2nd, 2011 at 9:14 am

    pardon me, En Fuego…

  33. Rich in NJ March 2nd, 2011 at 9:15 am

Grienke was permitted to have contact with the Yankees while he was still under contract with the Royals?

  34. Rich in NJ March 2nd, 2011 at 9:15 am

“Liriano is going to end up a Yankee this year & could be before the end of ST…..”

    Thanks for ruining my day.

  35. MTU March 2nd, 2011 at 9:16 am

    Cashmoney-

I have to leave for a hike soon.

I’ll think about your final offer on the trail. For at least a second.

    I promise.

  36. Mell March 2nd, 2011 at 9:22 am

“Grienke was permitted to have contact with the Yankees while he was still under contract with the Royals?”

Yeah, that seems a bit odd doesn’t it?

  37. Cashmoney March 2nd, 2011 at 9:22 am

have a good one MTU, be careful while u contemplating my offer, least u r overwhelmed it’s sheer magnitude in talents.

  38. Ys Guy March 2nd, 2011 at 9:27 am

greinke cant contact the yankees directlly but his agent certainly can talk to the royals about how his client feels he would do in a huge city given his condition.

the royals can certainly tell the yankees what the agent and the player said to them about being traded there.

  39. Ys Guy March 2nd, 2011 at 9:29 am

was there an ntc involved in grienke’s contract with the royals?

  40. Shame Spencer March 2nd, 2011 at 9:29 am

Alright time for another round of Quote of the Day!

This might be too classic, but I cant resist.. which Yankee player said the following: “My office is at Yankee stadium. Yes, dreams do come true.”

  41. Cashmoney March 2nd, 2011 at 9:30 am

    Jete

  42. Shame Spencer March 2nd, 2011 at 9:31 am

    Dammit.

  43. Ys Guy March 2nd, 2011 at 9:31 am

yes, greinke had a limited ntc and im pretty sure the yankees were one of the teams on it. so the royals would have to negotiate with greinke’s agent about buying out the ntc if they wanted to trade him.

  44. pat March 2nd, 2011 at 9:36 am

Tex using the same “the relationship has run its course” break up line with Scott that Alex used.

Some of the other quotes were more unique-

BryanHoch Teixeira said he wants to focus more on helping Yankees win and impact in community, not next contract. Feels Boras isn’t best fit for that.

PeterBotte Teixeira said Boras obv has done a lot for his career but sometimes “felt like Mark Teixeira, Boras client, not MTeixeira, baseball player.”

  45. ry81 March 2nd, 2011 at 9:39 am

Man people be hating on Cervelli ! You loved him last year when posada was hurt and he was playing good … Give him a chance we don’t really know what Montero can do ? He might be a big bust then what ?

  46. Cashmoney March 2nd, 2011 at 9:40 am

“the relationship has run its course”

I remember saying that to my Nintendo when super nintendo came out. Love is fleeting…

  47. blake March 2nd, 2011 at 9:45 am

    Rich,

It should only ruin your day if the wrong people are in the deal (Banuelos, Betances, etc)…..I really don’t see Cashman doing that, at least he better not.

Nothing wrong with what Cashman supposedly offered the Twins for Liriano. No more ridiculous than what Smith was demanding.

    MTU -

“There’s a sucker born every minute” is a phrase often credited to P. T. Barnum (1810–1891), an American showman. It is generally taken to mean that there will always be many gullible people in the world.

  51. Bronx Jeers March 2nd, 2011 at 9:56 am

They all dump Boras after the big payday. It’s like the class sweetheart breaking up with the hunk from the wrong side of the tracks after prom night.

  52. blake March 2nd, 2011 at 9:56 am

If I were Smith I would certainly ask for Banuelos…..whether he comes off that demand or not will suggest how motivated they are to move him.

  53. Shame Spencer March 2nd, 2011 at 9:59 am

Bronx Jeers – Great metaphor (euphemism?).

I wonder how Boras deals with this? Do you guys think he curls up in a corner and cries into hundred dollar bills?

  54. Cashmoney March 2nd, 2011 at 10:03 am

shame, he go get another hottie.

  55. Tom in N.J. March 2nd, 2011 at 10:04 am

Boras’ still got Bryce Harper and Stephen Strasburg.

    He’ll be o.k.

    ———————————————————————————————————————-

It’s not just asking for Banuelos it’s asking for much more. I see Cashman as him telling Smith to call him back when he puts down that tube of airplane glue.

  58. ac1 March 2nd, 2011 at 10:13 am

    Boras also has Cano now

Interesting take on Baseball Analysts as to why the Twins would trade Liriano

    http://www.yankeeanalysts.com/.....iano-26299

    Partial quote:
“They’re not happy with Liriano-Jay Jaffe details this meticulously in a recent piece on Baseball Prospectus (subs req’d). He’s had a history of hiding injuries and not communicating how he feels to the team. He has also been accused not doing his rehab work by the Twins, which is why they felt it took him so long to come back from Tommy John surgery. Further, as recently as this spring it was revealed he wasn’t doing his shoulder strengthening exercises this off season, which resulted in a shoulder strain in early camp. They also think that with his violent delivery and heavy reliance on the slider, he’s a good candidate to break down more as he gets older. Given the way the Twins operate the time to sell would be now, not later. They’d rather sell him a year too early than wait, have him get hurt and be worthless.”

  60. BoJo March 2nd, 2011 at 10:24 am

Sorry–that’s The Yankee Analysts–which used to be TYU and some other blog that combined.

  61. blake March 2nd, 2011 at 10:25 am

    GB,

Yea I agree…..we don’t know Smith’s motives though, if he was merely dangling Liriano out there to gauge the market (as Towers did with Upton ) or if he’s really motivated to move him…..we’ll see.

  62. GreenBeret7 March 2nd, 2011 at 10:32 am

Blake, my guess is that the Twins feel that he’s a ticking timebomb and they want to unload him. I don’t think Smith has an scruples about hiding facts as to his health and make-up, and if he can screw a team, he’d do it in a heartbeat, especially NYYs after four beatdowns in the post season since 2003.

  63. Ys Guy March 2nd, 2011 at 10:52 am

if the player is healthy and pitching well, and we saw liriano was last season, then the team has every right to trade the player for fear of injury risk.

its not like other teams dont know about his physical history and his mechanics. as long as he passes the physical. (im quite sure any team trading for him will ask for an extensive physical and a peek at his records.)

    then it’s caveat emptor.
