Oswalt vs. Yankees

TIME/TV: 1:05 p.m., YES Network

WEATHER: It looked kind of rainy this morning, but the clouds seem to be moving out and the sky is pretty blue at this point. Light breeze blowing in from center field.

UMPIRES: HP Vic Carapazza, 1B Marty Foster, 2B Mark Carlson, 3B Dan Iassogna

ON THE LINE: Burnett will make his second spring start, another chance to ease some of the concern that came with his rough 2010… Eric Chavez is getting another start at first base, while the guy who’s suddenly catching everyone’s eye — Jorge Vazquez — gets a start at third… Russell Martin is catching back-to-back days for the first time.

WHO DOESN’T LOVE A SOPRANO SAXOPHONE? Kenny G will perform the National Anthem. That’s… unexpected. Truthfully, I’ve never really listened to Kenny G, but I have to think he’ll do a nice job.

OUT OF THE BULLPEN FOR THE YANKEES: Joba Chamberalin, Pedro Feliciano, Hector Noesi and Mark Prior will be the first four of the pen. Luis Ayala could clean up the ninth inning.

BULLPEN FOR THE PHILLIES: RHP Vance Worley, LHP Ryan Feierabend, RHP Drew Naylor and RHP Brian Bass.

TOMORROW’S TRAVELERS TODAY: Forgot to include this in the morning notes.

Pitchers who will be making the trip to Orlando: Brian Anderson, Dellin Betances, Andrew Brackman, Robert Fish, Freddy Garcia, Warner Madrigal, Dave Robertson, Romulo Sanchez, Daniel Turpen, Eric Wordekemper

Players who will not be making the trip to Orlando: Francisco Cervelli, Russell Martin, Ronnie Belliard, Robinson Cano, Eric Chavez, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, Colin Curtis and Andruw Jones.

UPDATE, 1:36 p.m.: Eduardo Nunez’s first spring home run is a three-run shot off Oswalt for a 3-0 Yankees lead in the second inning. Meanwhile, A.J. Burnett has sent the side down in order through the first two innings.

UPDATE, 1:56 p.m.: Nine up, nine down for Burnett. Meanwhile, Granderson just sent a rocket over the wall in right field, a two-run shot that has given the Yankees a 5-0 lead.

UPDATE, 2:03 p.m.: RBI single by Chavez, except Posada missed third base on his way home, and he was called out. Strange moment. It was 6-0 for a while, but now it’s back to 5-0 after three innings.

UPDATE, 2:36 p.m.: Here come the minor leaguers. After Chavez’s second hit of the game — an RBI single in the fifth — Luke Murton is in to pinch run with a 7-0 Yankees lead.

    Go Yankees!

  2. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 7th, 2011 at 1:01 pm

Looking foward to AJ, Part II.

I absolutely believe he has turned the corner well.

    :)

  3. GreenBeret7 March 7th, 2011 at 1:06 pm

Chad, any word on the condition of Colin Curtis’ shoulder?

  4. Chad Jennings March 7th, 2011 at 1:07 pm

Haven’t heard anything on Colin so far. Probably won’t know anything until late this afternoon.

  5. The Mets are Pond Scum March 7th, 2011 at 1:08 pm

If your hellbent on Kevin Slowey, you might as well check in on Andy Hawkins’ availability.

  6. GreenBeret7 March 7th, 2011 at 1:09 pm

Thanks, Chad. That’s a rough way to start the season. Nice young guy and gets every ounce out of what talent he has. Hustle was never an issue.

  7. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 7th, 2011 at 1:09 pm

You can definitely see the difference in AJ’s delivery. May it continue.

  8. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 7th, 2011 at 1:10 pm

That looked like a strike. (That first pitch).

    Just sayin’

  9. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 7th, 2011 at 1:11 pm

Chad, any idea of the velocity of his fastball at this point?

  10. PhiltheThrill March 7th, 2011 at 1:11 pm

For whoever asked yesterday, the DePaula investigation is still ongoing, though he is signed. They have no idea when they’ll have a resolution.

  11. GreenBeret7 March 7th, 2011 at 1:12 pm

Thing to watch with Burnett today. The dark spot on the mound and how many times he hits that spot with his foot.

  12. David in Cal March 7th, 2011 at 1:13 pm

I can’t get into the Yankee game or the Mets game via MLB.com. Maybe their entire system is down. Anyone else having better luck?

  13. Mell March 7th, 2011 at 1:13 pm

Francessa just announced Girardi to appear on his show everyday during the season per tweets from the local beats. Yikes!

Suppose there has to be some really nice coin for Girardi to agree to that.

  14. Carl March 7th, 2011 at 1:13 pm

    Nice job AJ

  15. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 7th, 2011 at 1:14 pm

    Nice job AJ.

  16. GreenBeret7 March 7th, 2011 at 1:14 pm

Only one bad pitch in the inning.

  17. tomingeorgia March 7th, 2011 at 1:14 pm

Kenny G played the Anthem like he needed to kill some time. Awful!

  18. GreenBeret7 March 7th, 2011 at 1:16 pm

    15 pitches, 9 strikes

  19. RayVT March 7th, 2011 at 1:19 pm

I really like Kenny G! Of course I didn’t hear him play today.

  20. West Coast Yankee Fan March 7th, 2011 at 1:20 pm

    Ridiculous pitching staff.

  21. upstate kate March 7th, 2011 at 1:21 pm

    GB
you are slipping…where is the play by play for those of us at work??!!!

  22. GreenBeret7 March 7th, 2011 at 1:24 pm

Will do, Kate. I assumed that others would jump on it.

Top of the 2nd Burnett pitching

Howard strikeout on 91 MPH. worked in 2 change-upsy

  23. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 7th, 2011 at 1:25 pm

And this is why you don’t give up on players who have great stuff…

  24. RayVT March 7th, 2011 at 1:25 pm

AJ K’s Ryan Howard on 3 pitches.

  25. GreenBeret7 March 7th, 2011 at 1:27 pm

    Francisco soft grounder to short

    Everything’s working well so far

  26. GreenBeret7 March 7th, 2011 at 1:27 pm

Gload change-up on first two pitches, 2 strikes

    groundout

  27. RayVT March 7th, 2011 at 1:28 pm

    Wow! 8 pitches, 8 strikes & 3 outs!

  28. GreenBeret7 March 7th, 2011 at 1:29 pm

    Is that better, Kate?

I could sing songs and dance between innings.

  29. GreenBeret7 March 7th, 2011 at 1:29 pm

    Ray, loving those change-ups, huh?

  30. Yankee Trader March 7th, 2011 at 1:29 pm

    Trisha-

Fastball with nice easy motion at 93

  31. RayVT March 7th, 2011 at 1:29 pm

So for the game so far, AJ has thrown 23 pitches, 17 of which were strikes. 0 hits.

  32. upstate kate March 7th, 2011 at 1:30 pm

    yes thanks GB :)
the singing and dancing is optional

  33. RayVT March 7th, 2011 at 1:30 pm

    GB

If AJ can make people think offspeed, he will own them!

  34. Fran the original March 7th, 2011 at 1:30 pm

    GB,

Thanks for the play by play. I’m not at work like Kate, but I am out.

  35. GreenBeret7 March 7th, 2011 at 1:31 pm

    Bottom of 2nd, Oswalt pitching

Granderson rips a single to right

  36. RayVT March 7th, 2011 at 1:32 pm

AJ was going good last year for 1st half. I think he will be very good all year this year. He is a real talent. Now with a changeup, he could be truly awesome!

  37. GreenBeret7 March 7th, 2011 at 1:32 pm

upstate kate March 7th, 2011 at 1:30 pm
    yes thanks GB
the singing and dancing is optional

    ———————————————————————————————————————-

You don’t seem too thrilled about the song and dance

  38. Tom in N.J. March 7th, 2011 at 1:33 pm

    “Wow! 8 pitches, 8 strikes & 3 outs!”

    2nd best inning ever?

  39. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 7th, 2011 at 1:33 pm

Trader, thanks! His stuff is looking great. Rothschild is still my leading candidate for MVP!!!

    :)

  40. West Coast Yankee Fan March 7th, 2011 at 1:33 pm

    Chavez looks good.

  41. GreenBeret7 March 7th, 2011 at 1:34 pm

    My pleasure, Fran

    Posada fly out to left

Chavez line single to right, Granderson to

  42. West Coast Yankee Fan March 7th, 2011 at 1:34 pm

Caution on Burnett joy – it’s March 7th in Spring Training.

  43. Carl March 7th, 2011 at 1:36 pm

    Nunie!~

  44. teddy9000 March 7th, 2011 at 1:36 pm

    nice nunez

  45. GreenBeret7 March 7th, 2011 at 1:36 pm

    Vazquez strikeout

Nunez 3 run line drive homer to left

  46. 108 stitches March 7th, 2011 at 1:36 pm

Burnett has always needed that 3rd pitch to keep hitters honest / off balance. The changeup can be a difference maker for him along with the change of mechanics from working with Larry Rothschild.

  47. PhiltheThrill March 7th, 2011 at 1:36 pm

    That’s why Nunez beats Pena.

  48. yankeefeminista March 7th, 2011 at 1:37 pm

There’s the Eduardo sometimes pop that we all know and love.

  49. Pat M. March 7th, 2011 at 1:37 pm

Roy no longer can live upstairs

  50. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 7th, 2011 at 1:37 pm

“Caution on Burnett joy – it’s March 7th in Spring Training.”

No caution necessary. We know where he’s been and we know what he’s changed. However, you may feel free to apply all the caution that you personally choose to employ. This is America after all!

    :)

  51. Yankee Trader March 7th, 2011 at 1:38 pm

Solid shot to left and a 3 run homer for Nunez off a Roy Oswalt fastball. Now Pena up to try and equal Nunez blast. :)

  52. upstate kate March 7th, 2011 at 1:38 pm

    GB
I just didn’t want to put any additional pressure on you!

  53. GreenBeret7 March 7th, 2011 at 1:39 pm

    Pena strikeout

went from 0-2 to full count

  54. West Coast Yankee Fan March 7th, 2011 at 1:39 pm

    Nunez can hit.

  55. Cashmoney March 7th, 2011 at 1:40 pm

i was hoping belly to belly with Pena.

  56. GreenBeret7 March 7th, 2011 at 1:40 pm

It’s best I don’t then, Kate. Even “Killer’ does it better and he’s usually out of key and has 4 left paws

  57. PhiltheThrill March 7th, 2011 at 1:41 pm

Nunez has always had the tools.

  58. Betsy March 7th, 2011 at 1:42 pm

Ooh, I’m liking what I see from AJ (well, reading anyway, lol).

  59. UnKnown March 7th, 2011 at 1:45 pm

Is anyone trying to view the game on MLB.TV? For some reason I can only get the Audio – But no Video.

  60. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 7th, 2011 at 1:45 pm

Betsy, he just looks so relaxed and in control. His fastball has nice movement on it and his changeup is working nicely! Flash just said he wants to see AJ work in his curve ball more.

(I still love what Rothschild is doing with the pitching staff. Maybe Eiland stayed too long at the fair, who knows.)

  61. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 7th, 2011 at 1:46 pm

They just said his fastball is going in at 94!

  62. West Coast Yankee Fan March 7th, 2011 at 1:46 pm

Makes no sense to me to send Nunez back to AAA because he won’t play enough here. Jeter’s not going anywhere for a while; you cant stick him there for 2-3 years. He’ll play enough. He is a much better player than Peña IMO.

  63. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 7th, 2011 at 1:48 pm

WOO HOO!!!! GREAT job by AJ.

    :)

  64. GreenBeret7 March 7th, 2011 at 1:48 pm

Burnett pitching in the 3rd. perfect so far

Mayberry fly out to right field

hasn’t missed his landing spot on the mound yet.

Ruiz hard chop to 3rd for out

Valdez 3 94 MPH fastballs good curve but misses. ground out to short.

perfect through 3 innings about 46-47 pitches

  65. West Coast Yankee Fan March 7th, 2011 at 1:48 pm

Good start to the Spring for AJ. Seems very calm – I like that.

  66. Patrick March 7th, 2011 at 1:49 pm

    Nice outing for A.J.

  67. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 7th, 2011 at 1:49 pm

If Joba is in next, I hope he has better results than he did in his last outing.

  68. Yankee Trader March 7th, 2011 at 1:49 pm

No hitter for AJ. Fastball at 94 and locating just where Martin calling it. Both Vazquez and Nunez show off strong arms from 3rd and short.

  69. hardwired7 March 7th, 2011 at 1:49 pm

    live feed from Justin.tv:

    http://www.justin.tv/thewrestlingguru#/w/941432432

    nice to see A.J. dealing.

  70. DadinIowa March 7th, 2011 at 1:50 pm

I am watching mlb.tv. Its coming in fine. BTW, was it ever explained why Eiland took the leave of absence and why he was not rehired?

  71. GreenBeret7 March 7th, 2011 at 1:50 pm

Bottom of 3rd inning. Oswalt still pitching

    Gardner hard grounder to 1st

  72. Fran the original March 7th, 2011 at 1:50 pm

    Trisha,

Guess AJ had a good outing. Great to hear positives about him :)

  73. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 7th, 2011 at 1:51 pm

“Seems very calm – I like that.”

That’s one of the things that strikes me the most. And from what we hear about Rothschild, if AJ does get out of synch once-in-a-while, Rothschild seems like the perfect person to reel him back in.

Rothschild certainly seems like the perfect bromide, especially in a season where the rotation is still being figured out.

  74. Betsy March 7th, 2011 at 1:52 pm

Trish, so far Larry has done well with AJ……I like him a lot and think he’s going to be a very good addition to the staff, but it’s way too early to say how he’s helped (or not) the other pitchers. It’s also too soon for AJ – let’s see if he can keep this up in the regular season.

  75. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 7th, 2011 at 1:53 pm

Fran, he didn’t look good, he looked GREAT.

    :)

  76. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 7th, 2011 at 1:54 pm

Betsy, you know how I go. AJ for Cy Young and Rothschild for sainthood! (until I hear otherwise!)

    :)

  77. PhiltheThrill March 7th, 2011 at 1:56 pm

    Grandy go BOOM!

  78. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 7th, 2011 at 1:56 pm

Because Oswalt is someone to be feared.

    :)

  79. GreenBeret7 March 7th, 2011 at 1:56 pm

Martin hot bouncer to 3rd inning, safe on error

    Swisher fly out to center

Granderson line drive 2 run homer to right

  80. Yankee Trader March 7th, 2011 at 1:56 pm

Granderson for MVP line shot over right field fence.

  81. Pat M. March 7th, 2011 at 1:57 pm

Curtis has a very quick and lethal stick…Really can turn

  82. yankeefeminista March 7th, 2011 at 1:57 pm

Grandy is having nice AB’s. Good job by AJ, but frankly I expect him to do well.

  83. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 7th, 2011 at 1:57 pm

Phil, that’s the same Grandy that so many on lohud were trying to trade in the middle of last season!

Good waiters indeed get good tips.

    ;)

  84. GreenBeret7 March 7th, 2011 at 1:57 pm

Oswalt gets derricked after 54 pitches

  85. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 7th, 2011 at 1:57 pm

Betsy, well not every Yankee pitcher needs help. I’m keeping my eye on Joba though. To me that’s going to tell a lot about Rothschild’s effectiveness with getting pitchers with great stuff back to center.

  86. PhiltheThrill March 7th, 2011 at 1:58 pm

Grandy is another candidate for a big year.

  87. Betsy March 7th, 2011 at 1:59 pm

I thought Grandy would have a huge post-season and he did; I expect him to just kill it this year

  88. Patrick March 7th, 2011 at 1:59 pm

Phil, that’s the same Grandy that so many on lohud were trying to trade in the middle of last season!

Wow I guess I missed those posts… Where are those people now? :)

  89. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 7th, 2011 at 1:59 pm

Tip of the cap to Fran and Tar, both who stood by Grandy in his darkest moments and believed in his defensive contributions to the Yanks, even when his offense was spotty. There were probably others but Fran and Tar are two who stood out to me.

  90. Fran the original March 7th, 2011 at 1:59 pm

Glad Curtis hit that homerun. I like Curtis :)

  91. yankeefeminista March 7th, 2011 at 2:00 pm

    Thatta boy, Po, going opposite.

  92. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 7th, 2011 at 2:01 pm

    Patrick, if you were a Grandy-offer, I don’t remember.

    :)

What I vivdly remember is strident conversation about poor Curtis and being told in no uncertain terms that the Yankees had gotten him for his offense and there were no ifs, ands or buts. His defensive contributions in the meantime were totally ignored.

  93. yankeefeminista March 7th, 2011 at 2:01 pm

lol, the ‘so-called”pundits are going to have a rude awakening when we both pitch and rake during the 2011 season.

  94. Cashmoney March 7th, 2011 at 2:01 pm

both who stood by Grandy in his darkest moments
    ——–
    only on lohud, Trish.

  95. Carl March 7th, 2011 at 2:03 pm

Sado is in mid season form

  96. PhiltheThrill March 7th, 2011 at 2:03 pm

    Po missed third.

  97. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 7th, 2011 at 2:03 pm

    Nice job by Eric!

    :)

Nice to see the “feared-Phils” spitting the bit.

Wow. I was just going to ask (as I do every time it happens) if anyone knew of cases where the appeal went to third and was upheld.

    Oh well1

  98. West Coast Yankee Fan March 7th, 2011 at 2:04 pm

Chavez – could be the steal of the off-season. Better watch out A-Rod. (he out of options?)

I have to give Cashman credit for Chavez and Jones.

  99. GreenBeret7 March 7th, 2011 at 2:04 pm

    Worley pitching

Posada drills a double to left center off of right hander

Chavez rips a line drive single to center, Posada “speeding” around the bases

of course, on the 2nd appeal, Posada called out for cutting 3rd base too close

    5-0 Yanks after 3 ininngs

  100. Patrick March 7th, 2011 at 2:04 pm

    Patrick, if you were a Grandy-offer, I don’t remember.

Nah wasn’t me, it would be crazy to trade Granderson mid-way through the first year after you got him.

  101. Pat M. March 7th, 2011 at 2:05 pm

Tricia…..There was a large segment here that was very much against The Granderson trade

  102. Patrick March 7th, 2011 at 2:05 pm

Chavez – could be the steal of the off-season. Better watch out A-Rod. (he out of options?)

Are you asking if Chavez or A-rod are out of minor league options?

The only way A-rod would worry about Chavez is if he had both legs amputated.

  103. Yankee Trader March 7th, 2011 at 2:06 pm

Has anyone seen what kind of arm strength Chavez has had on throws from 3rd with his trice surgically repaired right shoulder? His bat is looking good. Everytime I’ve seen him play in ST he’s been at 1st.

  104. GreenBeret7 March 7th, 2011 at 2:07 pm

    Chamberlain pitching in the 4th

  105. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 7th, 2011 at 2:07 pm

“lol, the ‘so-called”pundits are going to have a rude awakening when we both pitch and rake during the 2011 season.”

Yankfem, isn’t this just a delight to watch? I cannot overstate how exciting it is to watch the Yanks come back into their own with players like Jones and Chavez and Garcia and Colon, and their darling kids, of course!

“both who stood by Grandy in his darkest moments
    ——–
    only on lohud, Trish.”

Ain’t it? Amazing to behold Cash.

  106. GreenBeret7 March 7th, 2011 at 2:08 pm

    Victorino grounds out to 2nd

  107. Cashmoney March 7th, 2011 at 2:08 pm

Chavez – could be the steal of the off-season.
    ——
    how?

  108. yankeefeminista March 7th, 2011 at 2:09 pm

    Swishalish! lol.

  109. PhiltheThrill March 7th, 2011 at 2:09 pm

    Swisher with a great catch.

  110. GreenBeret7 March 7th, 2011 at 2:09 pm

Shisher catches foul ball and flips over the fence…hangs on

  111. Tom in N.J. March 7th, 2011 at 2:10 pm

    Swishersault?

  112. GreenBeret7 March 7th, 2011 at 2:11 pm

Grounder to Chavez at 1st, pops up into the air and leads Chamberlain perfectly with underhand flip for the out

  113. yankeefeminista March 7th, 2011 at 2:11 pm

Are those using mlb-tv now getting a picture? I just checked mine for comparison and for the record, it is working fine.

  114. West Coast Yankee Fan March 7th, 2011 at 2:11 pm

Patrick – was joking about A-Rod. Come on. lol

  115. Yankee Trader March 7th, 2011 at 2:12 pm

Swisher with a terrific backhand catch of a foulball flips over the railing holding on lands on his back, smiling and no drinks spilled. I score that a 10 out of 10.

  116. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 7th, 2011 at 2:12 pm

“Nah wasn’t me, it would be crazy to trade Granderson mid-way through the first year after you got him.”

Wouldn’t ya think so Patrick? But I have to tell you that there was very vocal and steady consternation, I think even to the point of some poster(s)? wondering if the Yankees would be able to find a taker for Curtis.

“Tricia…..There was a large segment here that was very much against The Granderson trade”

Pat M, that sounds familiar too. As I remember, you were one of the posters leading the charge FOR Granderson!

    :)

  117. ericns1 March 7th, 2011 at 2:12 pm

Yes, especially considering it will translate to the 2011 season. You can just see everyone looking so mechanically sound, and the batters grinding out these ST AB’s. What is not to love!

Did say Nunez could replace Jeter in case of injury.

  123. Fran the original March 7th, 2011 at 2:15 pm

I thought the Vazquez trade was good too, since he was coming in as a #4 starter.

  124. Betsy March 7th, 2011 at 2:15 pm

People that liked the Granderson trade initially seemed to jump ship like 5 games into the season, but then they were just following Joel Sherman. I distinctly remember Sherman, very early in the season, killing the trade.

the only thing is that it’s now time to build pena’s trade value. he clearly doesn’t have a place on the yankees. if some other team, like an nl team, needs a defensive ss, send him packing for a reliever.

I wanted him a long time before that trade was made. I was thrilled when the trade was made. I have never thought the trade was bad. I have never wished Granderson was not a Yankee. I hope he goes on to have a long and illustrious career with the NY Yankees.

Do some people here have an aversion to qualifying words like “some” “money” “a few” ? Too may generalizations. :?

Hopefully gardner’s patience gets results like that. I wonder if the scouting report that he has a good eye puts pressure on the pitcher to stay near the zone. Hopefully they’ll be so worried it’ll be a self-fulfilling thing and end up walking him. :)

Just as I thought! Bodog was started by Calvin Ayre. Calvin Ayre is Canadian. Montreal is in Canada. Jeff Loria used to own the Expos and was in cahoots with John Henry and Selig to sell the Expos to MLB so that Loria could buy the Marlins from Henry and Henry could buy the Sux!

  258. G. Love March 7th, 2011 at 3:14 pm

To everyone patting themselves on the back, front and rear for sticking by Granderson,

If Grandy didn’t admit it wasn’t working and go to Kevin Long for help, none of you would be so self congratulatory about Curtis right now.

He was having a dreadful offensive season up until mid August. And let’s not forget, when anyone expressed angst over Granderson hitting like a bad Rick Ankiel for most of the season we were all told to be patient and wait for the year to end so Long could work with him in the off season.

All most normal people wanted was for Granderson to work with Long during the season and try to fix what was clearly broken in his swing.

When he did it and the results started coming, all of the Granderson detractors cheered in here and were very pleased the guy showed the humility to ask for help in season and then execute it.

If you can’t admit Granderson was a broken hitter for 2/3′rds of last season then you can’t see past your own pride and need for being “right”.

He was a shadow of the hitter he became once he went to Long. Long’s advice and Grandy’s willingness to take it is what saved his season. Not your faith.

It had nothing to do with your “sticking by him”. You didn’t will him to fix his swing. Long and Grandy did it when he admitted he was a mess offensively. It was a small adjustment and it worked thank goodness.

Sometimes some of you have such a ridiculous need to be “right” in here you blur the facts that the guy was a mess up until he got help.

Everyone who is a Yankee fan wants to see him do well and hit HR’s. No one wanted to see him fail except for the Austin Jackson huggers out there.

When he was stuggling and approaching his rock bottom it was tough to stomach because of the high price the Yankees paid for him. After watching Javy come here and spit the bit, everyone was on edge that the Yankees were getting killed in the off season trades they made.

But before Granderson made the adjustment there was zero indication that he was about to get hot and break out of it. All the stats indicated the guy was trending downwards and words were leaking from Detroit that part of the reason he was dealt was he was too involved in off field charitable endeavors and they felt his offensive game was slipping.

  259. blake March 7th, 2011 at 3:15 pm

  298. G. Love March 7th, 2011 at 3:29 pm

I expect Adrian Gonzalez to hit 120 HR’s and 440 RBI this season by the all star break. He’s going to bat in the low .800′s for the season and OPS infinity.

Also, Lackey, Beckett, Lester, Bucholtz will all win 40 games a piece even though they only start 30 a piece.

Aceves will lose the Cy Young Award by 1 vote to Andrew Miller which will be renamed “The Andrew Miller Award” after the season.

Carl Crawford will steal 150 bases and be able to play the entire OF by himself defensively allowing Francona to move 2 OF’er into the IF so everyone pitches a no hitter every day.

Saltala-whatever will throw out 90% of baserunners. The 10% he misses will be due to disinterest.

Peter Gammons will levitate above the field and throw candy to all the fans during the 7th inning stretch.

It’s going to be a season for the ages in Boston folks.

What impresses me more than just the articulacy and obvious brightness is the way he’s able to include the interviewer as if it’s more of a conversation. The observations about Oswalt show not only that he doesn’t wish to offend anyone but that he’s got a bird’s eye perspective and is even somewhat empathic.

None of us was saying Granderson was NOT struggling when he hit his rock bottom – just that we believed he was going to come out of it. So kill us for sticking by the guy. We stuck by him because we believed in him and in his talent.

And since my faith is rooted in the Yankee organization and not on anyone posting on this forum, including myself, I really don’t give a rat’s ass how many times I’m right and how many times I’m wrong.

So please don’t be so self-righteous in terms of laying out “how it was” when people were ready to annihilate Granderson. Because that’s NOT how it was. This forum isn’t known for patience when it comes to players having off days, let alone off periods of time.

Now for those who LIVE to be right, I’d suggest that you grow some patience. You’ll find you’re right more often than you’re wrong when you do that.

“When he was stuggling and approaching his rock bottom it was tough to stomach because of the high price the Yankees paid for him. ”

My support is equal for high and low priced players. I don’t differentiate. If I believe in them, I believe in them. There’s nothing to “stomach”.

“G Love – your Granderson post was absolutely brilliant. Well done.”

Let me guess. You were one of the people giving up on Granderson.

  338. J. Alfred Prufrock March 7th, 2011 at 4:10 pm

Trisha I agree with what you said before about Granderson’s defense being ignored. He is one of the elite center fielders in baseball with the glove but never gets mentioned that way. He’s underrated.
Goin to dinner. Hope Dellin gets in there tonight.

  339. West Coast Yankee Fan March 7th, 2011 at 4:22 pm

No, bad guess. I liked the trade for Grandersonwhen it was made and never thought he should be traded when he got off to a poor start. But the reality is he had a lousy year, excepting September/October and the playoffs.

I look forward to seeing him have a better year which would mean cutting down on his strikeouts and hitting left-handers better.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
