Pregame notes: Cashman shoots down Chapman report
Brian Cashman said it’s “silly” to suggest the Yankees offered more than $54-million offer to Aroldis Chapman before he signed with the Reds.
According to Sports Illustrated, a current lawsuit says the Yankees made such an offer, but Cashman said no such offer was ever on the table. In fact, the Yankees never made Chapman an offer.
• Speaking of not making offers, Cashman once again said he has nothing brewing on the trade market. Even in late spring, Cashman said, most available players have either terrible contracts or no remaining options. He said it’s still very possible the Yankees will open the season with only players who are currently in camp.
• Mariano Rivera threw live BP today. “Yogi said he looked pretty good and we should give him another look,” Joe Girardi said.
• Still not certain when Rivera will get in a game, though it looks like March 16 is a good bet. Rafael Soriano will make his first spring appearance tonight.
• Bartolo Colon is scheduled for four innings as tonight’s starter. Girardi said his long reliever will “probably” be one of the four back-of-the-rotation candidates. Cashman said the Yankees have talked to Colon’s agents about the possibility of keeping him in the bullpen. They have not talked to Freddy Garcia’s agents about making him a reliever. Both can opt out at the end of spring training.
• Eduardo Nunez is playing left field off the bench today, and Ramiro Pena is scheduled to take play balls in left field during fielding drills. Girardi said the Yankees want to give both utility candidates a little bit of outfield time because it’s very possible the Yankees will carry only one reserve outfielder.
• Also, Girardi said it’s not impossible that the Yankees would carry both Nunez and Pena, but it’s clear they’re planning to take one utility man and one from a crowd of corner infielders (Chavez, Belliard, Vazquez, Laird). Technically, Nunez and Pena could play the infield corners, but the Yankees are looking at their reserve infield candidates as separate groups, planning to take one utility and one corner.
• A.J. Burnett, Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain, Sergio Mitre, Ivan Nova, Hector Noesi, Adam Warren and D.J. Mitchell threw sides today.
• Scheduled to play off the bench: C Kyle Higashioka, 1B Jose Gil, 2B Kevin Russo, SS Doug Bernier, 3B Jorge Vazquez, LF Eduardo Nunez, CF Austin Krum, RF Daniel Brewer, DH Jesus Montero
• Available out of the bullpen: Manny Banuelos, Rafael Soriano, Pedro Feliciano, Daniel Turpen, Luis Ayala, Andy Sisco, Eric Wordekemper, Ryan Pope and Mark Prior. It’s likely only Banuelos, Soriano and Feliciano will actually get in the game behind Colon.
• There was no travel squad listed for tomorrow’s game in Clearwater.

There was what could literally be called a “debate”. But calling it “great” would be off-target.

That what you have to resort to? I happen to think Chad and Sam do a great job as I have said many times.
In the end they didn’t sign him, but it wasn’t due to a lack of information or care.
Too bad you’re not Bojo. How’s that Chapman opinion working out for you?
NotHankStein In all honesty, I was the one who put the kibosh on the $54 million offer to Chapman. I wanted to save it for Arod’s next extension.
I’m not resorting to anything, but you’ve already questioned the character of anyone who endorses hunting and Chad endorses his friend’s business… put them together and…

Ah right, so Cashman treated Chapman to dinner and a playoff game because he wants to be his friend. How silly of me. They went after Chapman, and decided against offering him a contract (Or Cashman is saying they didn’t offer it because there is no advantage in this lawsuit situation to the yankees revealing an offer and why tell everyone you offered something which was beat by another team?)
The Yankees sent their scouts to his bullpens because they were bored. You got it all figured out.

And Cashman went after Pavano. A GM isn’t going to land everyone they target, but your supposition that the Yankees were not in on Chapman at all is false.
Crawford was of course signed before Lee, so we have no idea if the Yankees would have, in the end, offered a deal to crawford.

“I wouldn’t be so sure they did not make an offer, but yes they were interested. Which is the opposite of “Did not go after”’
Man, someone needs to legalize the recreational hunting of semantics.
A general manager’s sole job description is giving his team options. Due diligence is major part of how a GM performs a job. Because of Chapman’s background and situation, the options of evaluating his an option were abnormal.
You don’t have to court draft picks. What goes in Latin America in terms of signing free agents happens largely out of the public’s eye.
Cashman could have likely been simply keeping the Yankees options as open as possible. Establish a relationship, express an interest, and keep themselves in the ballgame IF they concluded they ultimately even wanted to be in the ballgame.
Because they scouted him, and wined and dined him does NOT mean they “went after him”. It may well mean they wanted to reserve the option to. After their courting they may very well have decided not to go after him.
This is 101 stuff Jerkface.
The Yankees don’t need to make a trade unless a team is giving a good player away, and I think it’s great that Nunez is seeing time in the OF.

All the courting is going after him. You do not know where it stops either. Price increasing, other teams offering crazier deals.
You could a player because you are going after them. You may ultimately conclude you don’t want the player, but you don’t scout someone you have no interest in attaining.

btw – not for nothing, but if Cashman is lying, he’s doing so knowingly he may have contradict himself under deposition at a future date.
What difference does it really make, lots of teams were ‘interested’ and sent staff to watch his bullpens. Offer or not we didn’t get him and that is now past and gone. BFD.
Kepner reported at the time Chapman signed that the Yankees never made an offer:
“But the Yankees, who want to keep their payroll around $200 million, did not want to enter a bidding war for a prospect they knew little about who could not be counted on this season. They never made an offer.”

Much like the tampering charges leveled against teams and the nasty business that occurs in latin america, I doubt this will matter.
“All the courting is going after him. You do not know where it stops either. Price increasing, other teams offering crazier deals.
You could a player because you are going after them. You may ultimately conclude you don’t want the player, but you don’t scout someone you have no interest in attaining.”
Again, semantics is your only friend here.
Has anyone here argued that a lefty with a 102 mph fastball didn’t “interest” the Yankees?
I sure all hell hope he did.
Ive been assuming that by “going after him” you were arguing that the Yankees had serious interest in signing Chapman at, near or aboce what would turn out to be his market price.
And I’m not sure of any evidence that suggests this is the case.
Because neither watching him throw bullpens and/or having him attend a playoff game speaks to this conclusion.
I’m arguing against WCYF’s statement last night that: “We didn’t go after Chapman.” He said any interest in Chapman was just to drive up the price for the opposition. Its not semantics. The Yankees were obviously interested in Chapman and followed his entire process, ultimately concluding that he wasn’t worth it to them for whatever price he was asking.
Pregame notes: Cashman shoots down Chapman
==================================
About 30 years too late.
“Nah, not buying it. Maybe to push up his price a bit but if the Yankees really wanted Chapman they would have got him.”
–
This is what he said Stuckey, which is a principle I disagree with. The Yankees do not sign every player they go after. At a certain price range or option level they would have gladly acquired Chapman. The same cannot be said for many players in the majors and minors.
And I’m not sure of any evidence that suggests this is the case.
–
I never said they wanted Chapman at the price he signed for.
oh that was good Mick…I totally missed that part.
Not making an offer to a player and having no interest in a player are two different things. They most definitely had Chapman to the stadium during the playoffs. They did due diligence; they had interest, but ended up not making an offer. It is not one or the other. It is one AND the other in this case.
“Yankees were obviously interested in Chapman and followed his entire process, ultimately concluding that he wasn’t worth it to them for whatever price he was asking.”
“Bubba Crosby is our Centerfielder”
“We cannot afford CC,AJ, and Tex”
“I have no trades in the works right now.”

I never said I agreed with the rumored 54 million. Only that we cannot conclude that the Yankees made NO offer. Major league offers are secret, and even more nebulous for latin american talent.
Nobody gives a crap about last nite or last month for that matter.
WCYF obviously does.
We also have no idea what the rumored 54 million dollar offer is. For how many years, how much is guaranteed. Chapman can take the Reds to arbitration in the final 2 years of his current deal which means it is actually worth more than 36 million if he succeeds.
No formal offer does not equal no interest.
The 54 million is being used by the prosecution to secure greater damages in the court against Chapman and his agency from his old friend who claims to have had a representation contract with Chapman. It could be a lie (very likely) or maybe the Yankees made an unverifiable verbal offer to lure Chapman stateside, and were hoping to play the kind of dirty games latin scouts and teams pull south of the border to get the talented cuban.
All of these are possibilities. What we cannot conclude is that the Yankees have no interest in Chapman.
This whole Chapman thing is a bit pointless, don’t ya think?

“Only that we cannot conclude that the Yankees made NO offer. Major league offers are secret, and even more nebulous for latin american talent.”
Again, you seem to be severely hedging your bet here, on one hand leaving the door open that the Yankees made an offer, but ALSO arguing they didn’t see his worth as what the market was bearing ….which leaves you in the in-between position of arguing the Yankees “went after” Chapman but “went after him” with an offer below market, which is somewhat unlike the Yankees.
Seem to be position crafted through needed response to counterarguments, rather than based on a fixed position.
Beginning with Colon tonight, the starters will get stretched for another inning or higher pitch counts, whichever comes first.
This should be the start of separation between the competition of Garcia, Nova, Mitre, and Colon. It would be incredible if all 4 pitch “lights out” until the final cuts are made.
“No formal offer does not equal no interest.”
The natural end to any discussion. The inevitable declaration that you can’t disprove a negative.

Which is why the lack of Chapman on the yankees cannot be used to prove that the yankees had no interest in acquiring him.

Stuckey, in the two quotes you’re juxtaposing I am arguing two different things. The yankees do not need to offer Chapman a contract to be interested to him. And unrelated to that, Cashman saying that the Yankees did not offer a contract to Chapman does not necessarily mean it is true.
And in a broad sense, arguing against the idea that if the yankees really want someone they will sign them no matter what. Which is an asinine position.
Cliff Lee, Barry Bonds, and Greg Maddux obviously disagreed.
