Friday morning notes: Splitting up for a split squad

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Mar 11, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Two games going on at the same time today.

Tony Pena is staying in Tampa to manage the home game. Joe Girardi is going on the road to manage against the Blue Jays and watch Ivan Nova pitch.

I’m following Girardi, so I’ll be hitting the road shortly. First, a few quick notes.

• Mariano Rivera will make his spring debut on Sunday. He has a side session today and will probably make his second spring appearance either Wednesday or Thursday. “Mo is one of the few guys you allow him to tell us when he’s ready,” Girardi said.

• Yogi Berra is with the Yankees again today. As Girardi said, he’s been sitting in his usual chair, same as always.

• The Yankees seem encouraged by the way Derek Jeter is swinging the bat. Girardi said he believes Jeter is growing more comfortable with his mechanics. “I think you see it in how hard he hits the ball,” Girardi said.

• Rivera, Bartolo Colon, Sergio Mitre, Manny Banuelos and Brian Anderson are scheduled to throw sides today.

Home game
vs. Atlanta

Off the bench: C Gustavo Molina, 1B Addison Maruszak, 2B Corban Joseph, SS Carmen Angelini, 3B Bradley Suttle, LF Ray Kruml, CF none, RF none, DH Brett Gardner

In the bullpen: Rafael Soriano, Steve Garrison, Joba Chamberlain, Pedro Feliciano, Eric Wordekemper, Andrew Brackman, Hector Noesi and Luis Ayala. My guess is that everyone listed after Feliciano is a backup today.

From minor league camp: C Jhorge Liccien, INF Justin Snyder and OF Abe Almonte are up from minor league camp as backups. Actually, that very well could be Zoilo Almonte. The only thing listed was an outfielder named Almonte.

Road game
vs. Toronto

Off the bench: C Jose Gil, 1B Luke Murton, 2B Kevin Russo, SS Doug Bernier, 3B Luis Nunez, LF none, CF Melky Mesa, RF Dan Brewer, DH Kyle Higashioka

In the bullpen: David Phelps, Romulo Sanchez, Andy Sisco, Ryan Pope, Adam Warren, Daniel Turpen, D.J. Mitchell

From minor league camp: C Mitch Abeita, INF Walter Ibarra and OF Ramon Flores are up from minor league camp to be backups on the bench.

I wonder how Yogi convinced his wife to let him stay. ;)

  2. yankeefeminista March 11th, 2011 at 10:59 am

Great, we may see Brackman on the televised Hughes game. I wouldn’t mind seeing Liccien either. He is supposed to be one of our best defensive catchers, but no bat or he would be a better known prospect.

Also it is Hughes vs. Hanson, and both Heyward and McCann are playing. This should be good!

    BRAVES lineup (1:15 @ NYY, 1230 AM): Prado -7 Conrad -4 CJ – DH McCann -2 Heyward -9 Lucas -5 Freeman -3 Schafer -8 Hernandez -6 Hanson -1

    Erin,

She probably didn’t have a choice. There is nothing the matter with him. He is 86…that is his problem. If Carmen didn’t want him in FL., she had to keep him from going altogether. That would be my take on the situation.

  5. yankeefeminista March 11th, 2011 at 11:04 am

Obviously, Yogi is feeling fine. They did say that the trip to the hospital to get him checked out was merely precautionary. You go, Yogi!

austinmac, the swimming part was just my two best friends and I – all female. And we didn’t strip on the beach and walk in the water, we took our stuff off in the water. So there was no exhibitionism going on! But in that beautiful water under the hot sun, it sure did feel good.

    Yankfem,

I am good thanks. Excited about the season…even though I won’t be in NY ’til June. Our cable doesn’t offer monthly MLB, and I don’t think I want to spend $179 for the season when we won’t be here. Hopefully, the Yanks will be on national TV often.

Hope all is well with you.

it’s hard to imagine that a single pitcher (Phil Hughes) could generate so much repetitive conversation on a blog. The kid won 18 games in his 1st year in the rotation, he’ll be better this year and have an excellent career (or he won’t).

Note to posters: leave the analysis of his every bowel movement to the pros, they know a lot more than any of you.

Glad to hear it. Are you back in Arizona?

If you want to, you can get mlb-tv monthly and can cancel at anytime. I have it for exhibition than will cancel for regular season. And pick it up again later when I am on vacation in RI in August. I love mlb-tv b/c I can be almost anywhere physically and watch games.

But luckily b/c we are the Yanks, there should be a good number of national telecasts if you decide to go that route. I too can’t wait until the season starts, both mlb and minor leagues, which will be equally as exciting this year with Killer B’s and Co. honing their crafts. :)

I hear ya. I am supposed to head out to my Japanese mall for tea and supplies, b/c I know I can watch this game later, but the lineups are so good that I am tempted to watch the game live. Plus even though it doesn’t count, Hanson and Heyward are on my fantasy team. :)

You could do worse than to have Hanson and Heyward on your fantasy team. Something makes me think that Tommy Hanson spent time on Erica’s fantasy team last season. (Or was it mine?) I believe in turning over players as often as necessary so I probably had all of them at one time or another!

Fran and I shared Nat players and they did very well by us, right Fran? There are nuggets of gold to be found on every team.

Well, get yourself to New York then tfy! Although NYS cannot in any way compare in terms of home crowd energy and “10th man” to OYS.

Also I may attend the April 5th Trenton Open House/first practice, depending on who is pitching at the Stadium. We (Yanks) have a home game vs. Minn. that evening. 39. MTU March 11th, 2011 at 11:35 am

    Austin-

Living in the Caribbean on a remote island for a year or so taught me something.

There is a maximum number of days you can go to the same deserted white sand beach, read a book, take a swim and drink a fifth of rum before your brain turns to complete mush, or your liver is pickled.

In my case, that turned out to be about 100 days.

Although some would say that’s the way I was before I ever got there.

actually, Im in charge of the Deviled Eggs. We go with the whole family. Last year I think there were 25 of us, not including the people that made the trip up for the day. We have 4 RV’s that we spend the day cooking the turkeys, casseroles etc. and then around lunch time everyone comes out with the food they’ve cooked and we pig out around the camp fire. 44. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 11th, 2011 at 11:37 am

yankfem, we haven’t drafted yet. We had a weird situation last season in that league we were in gave high points for pitching and allowed endless pitching starts per season. (The year before we were confined to 200 starts, so once you hit that, they stopped your pitching!).

Well we had one player who would stockpile the best pitchers and just hold onto them until they had two-week performances and then pull them out. There was nothing that said he couldn’t do it. But not everybody caught on to being able to do that. So there were weeks where everyone else would have 5 or 6 pitchers going and he would have 12! When I caught on to it, I started picking up pitchers like crazy but most of the heavies were already his. However, it’s what brought me to the Tommy Hansons and the Matt Latoses and the Mike Leakes and the Travis Woodses of the world. Oh the Travis Woodses. I owned him for the glorious game where he almost pitched a no hitter. But my happiness was short lived since he went back down to the minors quickly when someone came off the DL.

I also had Stephen Strasburg, in fact I drafted him while he was still in the minors.

    :(

I don’t wear a stick on makeup, I keep my nails cut as short as possible because I hate hearing them click on the keys of the piano and on the computer keyboard, and I will take on just about any challenge you can give me. But I do NOT like the thought of sleeping on the ground outdoors, nor would I want to sleep in a trailer thingy. I am just not into camping. Last time I slept in a tent was when I went white water rafting, several years ago. We pitched it ourselves, in the dark. Bad idea. In the middle of the night I went into one of the cabins they rented out on the camp ground, one that wasn’t occupied, and slept on the cot.

I’m not into torture, I admit it. I want comfort. So shoot me.

I was a GS troop leader (Brownies) for my oldest daughter in elementary school. We managed to get through 3 years of GS without ever once going camping!!!! None of the other moms of the girls lin my troop wanted to go either.

What? 3 years as a GS leader and no camping? That is sacrilege; how did you get away with it?

The big thing for our troop was camping and doing camping-related activities to earn badges. Can’t remember what the badges were for though. I just remember we had to know how to start and put out a fire. Useful for posting here. :)
