A double dose today.
First cuts coming soon.
Look at Cano getting the day off.
Awful about the tsunami and earthquake. My best friend’s sister is in Japan, but I checked in with her this AM and she’s OK.
Who is pitching the Jays game?
Blake-
SuperNova.
Today’s the day Phil Hughes goes all Aretha Franklin.
“Change, Change, Change.
The Change you fools.”
MTU,
Hughes and SuperNova at the same time…..wow.
Blake-
Throw in a few more innings from Manny, and a dinger from Jesus
and we’re on cloud 9.
When I lived in Hawaii, we lived about a mile from the beach and whenever there were tidal waves, those who lived on the beach came to stay with us. I was a little kid and it was like a festive party with so many people staying at our house. However, fortunately in those days we didn’t have to worry about any more ferocious acts of nature. I also have a special affinity with Japan, a field of study of mine. What is the lastest news? I can’t bear to watch CNN.
MTU,
I think he will start to throw them more. Now is the time to work on those things.
Tarheel basketball and 2 Yankee games at the same time today! I would get brain overload….luckily (or unluckily I wont be home).
I’ve always wanted to visit Japan….maybe one day.
Let’s hope Hughes actually throws the change. Somehow he always gets away from it. He has a better chance to “feel it” in warm weather than he will in frigid NY temperatures.
Two years ago when Hughes opened with SWB at Lehigh Valley, it was too cold and windy for him to throw it. He said he couldn’t even feel his hand.
Blake-
I’ve landed at Kansei airport en route to other destinations.
Does that count as a visit ?
MTU,
Sure why not.
Yabkeefem…,
Which island did you live on?

____
Mainly, Oahu.
Mother Nature has been particularly vengeful of late.
Aussie floods, NZ earthquake, Coldest winter in 1000 years in Britain,
etc.
Now this.
while deaths due to the earthquake, tsunami are very sad, tens if not hundreds of thousands of lives were saved today by modern building technology. modern life brings all sorts of annoyances, but some of the blessings of modern life go completely unnoticed while they keep us alive.
Watched “just go with it” the other night…..really made me want to to back to hawaii……

JF, are you really going to trust these writers? Writers, who among other things, referred to Banuelos as a “solid number 4, fringe #3 starter.” Those guys are amusing but I wouldn’t put too much stake in their rankings. lol. You need to be more discriminating.
As for Vizcaino, if he develops his change, he will project as a high ceiling starter. (Think ace. He was ripping it up in ST for the Braves.) Same boat as Jose Ramirez but opposite pitch. J-Ram has the change, and needs the curveball. Not unusual for highly touted milb pitching prospects, many of them if you haven’t noticed, working on a 3rd pitch which will make or break them as starters.

I’m not totally sure where she’s at. All my friend told me this morning was that she’s pretty far away from the tsunami. She said she was acutally talking to her on the phone when the earthquake hit.
I’m going to be working through both the games today. Ill have to sneak around my phone so I can catch the action. What an exciting day though, Hughes and Nova. I think Montero will break out soon though, looking forward to it.
Spelling’s wrong but the place is right.
MTU,
The Carribbean is flat and hot and full of blood suckers….Hawaii has mountains, the best pinapple on earth, better climate, and Kona coffee, and much less creatures that bite…..though much farther and more expensive

Watched ?just go with it? the other night?..really made me want to to back to hawaii??

blake, I’ve never been to Hawaii (sadly) but after I saw that movie I really want to go.
Erin,
you really should. Maui might be the world’s most perfect place…..at least one of them.
Blake, where did you travel to in Hawaii?
I have always wanted to live near Kyoto, but there are too many things I would miss in the US. Not least of which is Yankee baseball.
I am actually supposed to go up to the big Japanese mall this evening in Edgewater, NJ. I bet the tv’s there are on the tsunami events. People must be really concerned about their relatives.
Blake-
Apparently you don’t know the Caribbean all that well.
Witness : The mountains of PR, and The unspoiled tropical forests
of Dominica with wild rivers and geothermal features.
You really should get out more.
Blake-
For my taste Kauai is better.

And the smell of fresh limes, and figs, papayas and mango trees growing in ones yard…
As a little kid, I used to love looking all directions to see if I could find a space that didn’t have mountains. The combination of mountains and ocean… nothing like it.
Romine catching Hughes today. I like it.

Benshpigel : Making the longest trip of the spring Saturday, to Viera: burnett, brackman, martin, montero, romine, gardner, cano, chavez, nunez, maxwell
And me!!! Not looking forward to the long trip but excited to get to see Brackman and Martin(who I’m excited about this season) and Montero.
Don’t underrate the Carribean.
It has great diversity and it is far from flat.
The little island I lived on for a year has a better climate than Hawaii.
And it wasn’t flat or hot.
This might have been discussed yesterday, but I figured I’d post it anyway:
Earlier this evening, Dionisio Soldevila had reported via Twitter that the Yanks had signed a 20-year-old pitcher named Juan Carlos Paniagua for $1.1 million. I couldn’t find much about Paniagua , but Ben Badler had more in a report at Baseball America.
Paniagua had once been suspended by Major League Baseball for age fraud and Badler had some kind words about his stuff. Paniagua is “6-foot-1, 170 pounds with excellent arm speed and a power fastball that sits around 93-95 mph and touches 98. Some scouts said Paniagua has shown feel for a curveball and a changeup that could become above-average offerings in the future, though other scouts weren’t quite as sold on his secondary pitches.” We’ll find out soon enough what the Yanks’ plans are for this young arm.
http://riveraveblues.com/2011/.....ler-44510/
And we had mango, papaya, and all the rest for the taking.
And you don’t have to travel 8000 miles when you get “island fever”.
Evacuations taking place along the beach here as the waves are expected to hit around 8:30……
Chuck upset not only his own partners, but MLB and the Yankees which combined, probably helped grease his path out of that management group.
MTU,
well yea….I meant like the Caymens, Keys, etc….it is hot though and I’m not a fan of mosquitoes.
Yankeefem,
Oahu and Maui mostly, Kauai, and the big Island briefly.
MTU,
well maybe you can take me to these places….I’m just speaking from my experiences
I haven’t been everywhere….far from it. If somewhere on this earth can top Maui then I certainly wanna go!
Yankeefem,
sounds like you have lived in some pretty amazing places.

I’m not saying top. Just beautiful in their own right.
The Caribbean has more diversity than most people realize.
I’ve never been but I’ve heard it said that Bora Bora is the most beautiful island in the world.
I might get there someday.
Just to visit of course.
Expecting cuts to come from Parraz, Mesa, Maxwell, Brewer, Bernier, Anderson, Carlyle, Madrigal, Mitchell, Sisco, and Wordekemper.
Extra catchers kept until the next wave of cuts.
CountryClub,
I posted that link last night but know nothing about the kid so really couldn’t discuss a whole lot……you know anything about him?
I’ve vacationed in a lot of places in and out of the US and my favorite vacation spot by far is Hawaii. We were only on Oahu but I believed I was in paradise. Expensive paradise, but nevertheless paradise.
***********
Here’s a little gift I want to give everybody today. It’s part of an email I received once and I’ve been saving it to give to one of my sisters-in-law, but I have to do it at the right moment. She tends to get thrown by just about everything. The beginning of it deals with lots of disasters that people were saved from by having other events takes place, some of them considered annoyances at the time…
Now when I am stuck in traffic, miss an elevator, turn back to answer a ringing telephone ..
all the little things that annoy me.
I think to myself, this is exactly where I am supposed to be at this very moment..
Next time your morning seems to be going wrong, the children are slow getting dressed, you can’t seem to find the car keys, you hit every traffic light, don’t get mad or frustrated;
Someone is at work watching over you.
May you continue to be blessed with all those annoying little things and may you remember their possible purpose.
only in texas do you boast when you lose. remember the alamo and chuck greenburg!
Pat M. – Hope you’re ok. We’ll be thinking of you.
MTU,
Most places are beautiful in their own way…you can find great things everywhere if you look. My 401K will probably be blown on travel one day
Pat M,
Stay safe. Hopefully the impact won’t be too great by the time the waves hit the West coast.
Pat M.
I hope it won’t be too severe. I know you live close to the beach.
Any predictions from anyone on the expected severity ?
i’ve never been to hawaii. i’d like to check it out, but for less money you can go to paris or rome.
Trisha, if you liked Oahu then you really should visit the other islands. I thought I liked Oahu until we went to Maui…..
Blake-
That’s an excellent way to spend it IMO.
Erin
I’m hoping the trip isn’t horrendous. Its over 2 hours but I’m going over with someone. My tickets aren’t guaranteed as I’m relying on someone to have them when we get there. It should be a good trip though. I’m looking forward to it. Ill take pictures if I’m sitting close enough.
108 – i’m expecting betances and banuelos to be sent down this w/e too. not enough innings for all these starting pitchers anymore.
I thought I liked Maui when I went to Kauai.
pcaldera Someone kiddingly asked Yogi how his visit to Clearwater went. A smiling Mr. Berra replied: “I didn’t like the soup.”
Take care, Pat M.
Doctor Joe….I live on the bluffs so I’ll be fine, it’s the folks who live on the beach itself that are in danger…..Doreen’s resturant could be in danger
MTU,
I haven’t spent a lot of time on Kauai….but it’s simply beautiful. I like the combination Maui has though of outdoorsy stuff and civilization….and restaurants, and shops, and etc. You really can’t go wrong with either.
I think they’ll keep the B’s around a while longer….why not. They have to throw anyway, why not allow them to get some more experience against big leaguers.
Pat M,
be careful and good luck to all you California folk….
Pat M.
Good luck with the sunami.
It is hard to believe how fast these waves come through.
*tsunami
MTU,
you spent much or any time in Europe?
Pat M. – glad to hear you’re ok. But, this is a terrible event. I’ve been looking at the news items on Yahoo, while sipping coffee at desk, and it looks terrible, right out of one of those disaster movies.
Hope you and yours stay safe.
Pat M. -
Hope you are yours are spared, be safe.
MTU -
I’ve heard you called many hings, but, an angel?
Pat M -
Oh no!!!
I’ve already been mentally planning my next visit.
Seriously, though, I hope that the evacuations are nothing more than an annoyance.
blake -
I expect you’ll be watching ACC basketball today.
AL,
DVRing it….have to do some things today so I wont get to watch live….but I’ll be watching at some point

I suppose my most amazing historic moment was being in Leningrad when the Berlin Wall fell, but b/c Russia was still Soviet, we couldn’t really get any news from the Russian media. There was virtually no info. However, we were able to gauge what was going on through a nightly broadcast we were able to pick up from the BBC. That was also the year of the earthquake in CA. and I had no idea until a few days later that the World Series had been postponed. Pretty wild.
I loved living in Hawaii, but beyond Oahu and the Big Island, I have a child’s remembrances of the other islands, and would love to go back to some of the less inhabited areas now.
Blake-
Yes. Eons ago when I was in college. Spent a summer over there.
Made a big loop that started in Holland. Toured parts of Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, Spain, And Denmark.
I would like to see Greece, and more of Italy.
Other parts of the area are interesting to me too. Such as Dubrovnik, and Turkey.
Wanderlust runs in my veins. Always has. Money was always the limiting factor.
My dreams would be to go to remote places like Papua New Guinea, Borneo, and Madigascar.
And especially Machu Picchu.
Mrs. MTU wants to go to India soon.
Blake,
I dont know anything other than what I just read. However, I love the fact that they continue to stockpile young power arms. Just keep sucking them up. The more you have, the better the chance you find another Hughes or Banuelos.
Negril Jamaica, Seven Mile Beach, far away from any of the resorts. Stayed in a house that didn’t have electricity, slept under mosquitoe nets at night, washed in the back yard with water from the rain barrel. 3 beds for 7 of us, earliest in always got to sleep in the single bed! Ate things like fried plantains and goats knuckles at roadside stands, drank red stripe from beer shacks, snorkeled in the caves that were in one of the James Bond movies. We were so blown away by the amazing fish when we went snorkeling that one day we lost track of time and were in the water for at least 6 hours. I was burned to a crisp and couldn’t move for a few days. (But I got the single bed those nights!) Were able to go far enough down Seven Mile Beach that there were no people whatsoever in sight and swam au naturel in water so colorless that you always saw clear to the bottom. I remember being in that water and looking up at the hot bright Caribbean sun and thinking, this is the perfect moment in time.
Life has been very very good.
Be safe out West! Is it only Northern Ca. that is at risk?
It’s time to walk the pupperattzi.
BIAW.
MTU,
wow….that’s awesome. I may have an opportunity to go on a mission trip to Peru sometime in the next year with some MD’s…..in which there has been talk of a side venture to Machu Picchu….don’t know if it’ll work out though for me. Not the best time…..but we’ll see.
CountryClub,
totally agree. It’s a great thing to stockpile….that and up the middle players. Pretty much anything that’s difficult to find in free agency.

If I could change places with a human I would have loved to have been Hiram Bingham the discoverer of machu picchu.
Imagine the awe that he felt.
We have a friend of a friend who is there now hiking the Inca trail to MP.
I would love to do the same.
Back later.
Would love to put together an Italy, (parts I haven’t seen) Greece, France, Spain trip. But would want to take enough time to enjoy it. Guess it will have to be in off season, if it ever happens.

Yes, quality of the arm is the point, and thus as per Brackman, you give the pitcher every chance to be a starter.
Yes, the East understands this far better than the West. However, the West is lately reevaluating what indeed is progress. Although the transcendentalists and Wordsworth were on the right track.
Can you believe STS prospect “ramblings” called Banuelos fringy? Fringy! lol.
“I don’t think people are ignoring that you’ve said that…..what’s a little tough to understand is why you seem so pessimistic about him improving after you were with me and others last spring warning that he may struggle some and to temper expectations.”
This is correct.
The word “unfair” was used often to describe people that were down on Hughes as a top-line prospect due to his brief ML career to that point, as well as the expectations for him to be a front-line, fully-formed starter in 2010.
Everyone and anyone is entitled to their own opinion on how Hughes performed in 2010 after the fact, and while there will certainly be disagreement, opinions will be subjective by nature.
But again, that’s not what *I’m* (anyway) asking about.
I’m curious about the dichotomy between your position on Hughes last year and this year, because it is flat out contradictory, at least on the surface sans explanation.
Your frequent questions about Hughes stuff, Betsy, also makes it very apparent you are someone who expected Hughes to showcase a better fastball, a more consistent curve, and all around more varied secondary stuff.
So again Betsy, the questions is this: YOU preached patience for Hughes in 2010, and warned people he’d struggle. No one is making this up or twisting your words or meaning, it’s a matter of record.
So the very fair question is this: Why do you not simply regard Hughes’ 2010 a partly the struggles of a 24 year-old, first full year starter who was primarily a 1 pitch bullpen arm in 2009, as you yourself suggested for months before the 2010 season started?
YsGuy,
Hey, watch the Texan bragging bashing. We known to be the world’s best at not boasting–among other fabulous traits.
By the way, the Negril trip was right out of college. These days my perfect vacation is far less rustic. A more recent perfect moment was under the stars at Tanglewood, in July, with a cool mountain breeze acting as the backdrop for some beautiful music. I like the thought of an air-conditioned room with all of the amenities being nearby. I love the outdoors and communing with nature – but when it’s time to sleep, I want to be indoors in a comfortable bed!
Trisha,
I too went to Negril after school. I kept my clothes fully on. Jamaica is beautiful, but I loved my more recent trip to Costa Rica.
New Post- Friday morning notes: Splitting up for a split squad
Trisha and anyone else that is interested,
My advice to you is to travel while you can. I always looked forward to the time when we could take the time to see the world, so to speak. As the boys grew up, my back kept getting worse. Now I don’t think I can go anywhere because I can’t walk almost at all. I am not asking for sympathy, but rather want you to see what you can of the world.
It is easy to think the time won’t come when you are able to take the time, but it doesn’t always work out that way.
I must admit, I am not the rustic type. I need electricity and my creature comforts.
I did take one vacation with a high school boyfriend and his family. They owned (or relatives owned) a cabin in the woods somewhere (I don’t even remember where, but probably Pennsylvania or upstate NY). Anyway, no running water, no electricity, no heat, no indoor plumbing. This is when I found out that I wasn’t the camping type of girl. My boyfriend’s mom was baiting hooks with live worms. I was a fish out of water. He was my first serious boyfriend – we probably would not have been a good match long-term.
lol @ Chuck Greenberg he’s going to have to step down as managing partner of the Rangers.
Hanson is pitching for the Braves. Nice!

austinmac, the swimming part was just my two best friends and I – all female. And we didn’t strip on the beach and walk in the water, we took our stuff off in the water. So there was no exhibitionism going on! But in that beautiful water under the hot sun, it sure did feel good.

This is just one of many quantum physicists but he’s kind of the reigning pop star right now and he makes physics accessible. Claude Swanson, a former colleague, is another in the mainstream, although he can get a little insular and forget the person without a physics background. Many, many more. The paradigm has undergone a dramatic shift.
