Chad, Did you view Rodriguez’ blast last night? Curious about the distance, but radio broadcast said it made it out onto Dale Maybry Highway. Any clips on this?

  2. MTU March 18th, 2011 at 9:02 am

    GB-

Don’t bother with asking Chad just call NASA and ask them if the Hubbell spotted it.

    :)

  3. GreenBeret7 March 18th, 2011 at 9:14 am

MTU, the impressive part of Rodriguez’ spring so far isn’t just the distances, but almost all of his hits have been from left center to right center. Of 13 hits in 32 bats, 4 doubles and 4 homers. Just 2 cheap hits in the bunch.

  4. blake March 18th, 2011 at 9:16 am

    GB,

Montero is starting to square balls up more now.sounds like. I do expect him to struggle some this year and Im ok with that….but on nights when he’s in the lineup to go along with the rest of the regulars they are going to have some serious thunder top to bottom.

  5. MTU March 18th, 2011 at 9:17 am

    GB-

I know it’s only ST but he looks primed to have a monster season.

Love to see 40 dingers again to go with the rest of the goodies.

And you’re right. He’s spraying the ball all over the field.

    A very good sign.

Wait till Jesus launches a few into orbit.

The team has a lot of power.

    :)

  6. blake March 18th, 2011 at 9:19 am

That’s Arod’s stroke….when he’s driving the ball gap to gao that’s when he creates that crazy backspin that makes the ball carry forever…..he looks better this spring than at any point in 2010.

    Blake-

He’s 100% healthy and he has another movie star girlfriend.

    ;)

  9. blake March 18th, 2011 at 9:22 am

Montero ‘s swing is level and ferocious …..I don’t think its tooled quite like Alex to spin the ball as much as to just hit laser beams from foul pole to foul pole. I love both of their swings…..Je-zeus just needs to go to the Robbie Cano school of swinging at good pitches.

  10. MTU March 18th, 2011 at 9:25 am

    Blake-

Cashman will do his $ sign presentation for Jesus just like he did for Cano.

That should take care of it.

They didn’t purchase that light tower insurance for nothin’.

    Just watch.

    MTU,

yea. I like the Martin signing a lot and he’s looked great behind the plate from what I’ve seen this spring……but the nights Montero is in the lineup it could be scary good once he gets up to speed. He’s going to look like a rookie some….but I would also expect him to do some damage as well.

  13. blake March 18th, 2011 at 9:33 am

    Erin,

    Maybe next winter. ;)

  14. Ys Guy March 18th, 2011 at 9:34 am

remember when robbie used to swing at anything? i remember about a thousand times where he came up and took a sad hack at the first pitch out of the box or in the dirt and everyone on here would flip out about it.

    he’s come a long way…

  15. MTU March 18th, 2011 at 9:34 am

    Blake-

Of course he will struggle some. Goes without saying.

How do 20 dingers as a rookie sound ?

I’ve got Alex down for 40, Curtis down for 35, Tex for 35, Swish for 30, and Cano for 30. Not too shabby , eh ?

    :)

  16. blake March 18th, 2011 at 9:37 am

    MTU,

Depends on how much he plays. With 300-400 ABs I think 20 is doable. I think Alex competes for the MVP this year.

  17. MTU March 18th, 2011 at 9:38 am

Throw in another 15-20 from Jorge, and 15 from Jeter,15 from Martin, and 15 from the Jones/Chavez combo and that’s a lot of salamies.

    :)

  18. Ys Guy March 18th, 2011 at 9:39 am

its really hard to pay any attention to baseball these days, with italy, brittain and france about to send armies to lybia, protesters being gunned down in yemen and the tokyo electric company looking like they have no clue how to prevent (at least) 3 nuclear reactors from full meltdown.

  19. GreenBeret7 March 18th, 2011 at 9:41 am

Long thinks that Montero is trying to impress so much that he’s becoming “pull conscience” and that they’ll get him back to his center/right center hitting. Girardi thinks that the desire to impress on defense is also causing him to tense up behind the plate. They think that he’s now trying to prove he belongs instead of being the back-up by default.

  20. MTU March 18th, 2011 at 9:43 am

    Y’s-

That’s just makes baseball all the more important- as an escape.

    Movies serve the same function.

Things do seem to be spinning out of control right now.

But I suspect that many periods in history would have looked the same or worse.

  21. blake March 18th, 2011 at 9:45 am

    GB,

yea he looked like he was pressing at the plate….the other night though he hit some balls hard the other way……its looking like they are leaning towards taking him north so maybe they should just make it official and see if he relaxes a bit. Just from the small sample this spring….I think he’ll see a lot of slop. I’m the big leagues until he shows he can lay off of it.

  22. Ys Guy March 18th, 2011 at 9:46 am

mtu, i have to disagree with you there. while baseball is a nice escape, this points out to me how unimportant baseball is in the big scheme. especially ST baseball.

i have one question about the arod homer though, who did he hit it off?

  23. MTU March 18th, 2011 at 9:46 am

Maybe we all should be working harder on that “bucket list” ?

    uhhh….. really?

  26. blake March 18th, 2011 at 9:50 am

I have dead arm too these days :(

  27. GreenBeret7 March 18th, 2011 at 9:50 am

Montero will be much like Cano in that he’s never going to walk 70-90 times a season, but, he’s not going to strike out 100 times either. He’s only struck out jst 6 times this spring, so he’s not a wild swinger and has a good idea of the strike zone.

  28. MTU March 18th, 2011 at 9:51 am

    Y’s-

Perspective definitely provided but what you cannot control you must accept and cope with.

    To cope means having escapes.

    That’s all I’m saying.

If we focus on the awesome helplessness that Mankind sometimes is forced to experience it could make you go mad and break your heart.

Got to find ways to go on.

    Either that or check out.

    It’s our lot.

  34. MTU March 18th, 2011 at 9:56 am

I guess so after 100 years of misery.

They must have great coping mechanisms.

    And eternal optimism.

  35. MTU March 18th, 2011 at 9:59 am

Do you think Venditte could have 2 dead arms ?

    :)

  36. blake March 18th, 2011 at 9:59 am

    GB,

Yea he reminds me of Cano a bit in approach

  37. Ys Guy March 18th, 2011 at 10:00 am

doreen if you are around, good fantasy advice about catchers in today’s times. he focuses on the difference between ‘deep leagues’ and ‘shallow leagues’ .

fyi our league would be kind of in the middle as it’s all mlb but there are 14 teams with 2 catchers each i believe.

  38. MTU March 18th, 2011 at 10:01 am

Well if somebody is going to take Jesus under their wing they better have wings the size of a Condor.

    ;)

  39. Triple Short of a Cycle March 18th, 2011 at 10:13 am

Does anyone think Arod hits 40 this year? Is a 290 40 120 a realistic line?

  40. blake March 18th, 2011 at 10:15 am

Yes….I think Alex could hit more than 40 if he plays 150 games.

  41. stuckey99 March 18th, 2011 at 10:16 am

Quick note on last night, then moving on (assuming Jerkface has stopped thinking of replies).

I commented on being sick of hearing about Phil Hughes change-up, which promoted some responses, which prompted a post about baseball not lending itself to game-by-game analysis.

Let me tie the two together quickly.

A year ago at this time, Hughes’ CU was the ST “It Girl” The hot, young, new attractive thing that everyone wanted to talk about and was anticipated to be the new star on the scene, enjoying a long career in the spotlight.

Then the regular season started, and she largely disappeared. They the whole thing became the classic snake-eating-its-own-tail. Then the story became, “what happened to the CU? Why isn’t be throwing it more?”

Then cue this ST, Phil Hughes pitches some-teen innings, and reporters after the game are asking about the CU, with the obvious intent in trying to anticipate it’s use and effectiveness this season.

    Lesson not learned.

That’s a example of what I mean when I say in ML baseball few things mean much until it presents itself over a series of games and weeks.

I DO think post-game analysis is at its heart an attempt to anticipate the future. The game has been won or lost. Over the course of 162, you’re going to see EVERYTHING. Good players fail in a big spot. Not-so-good-players succeed. A perfectly executed hit-and-run that may be one of a very few to happen during the year.

When things noteworthy happen in a game, i tend to think people want to know if its an indication of things to come.

And people should really reconsider responding with “well, what are we allowed to discuss Stuckey”. It’s been 3 year folks, time to get in on the joke (Nick, you with me?)

I often post in exaggerated style, and rarely self-qualify with “IMO’s” and emoticons. Agree or disagree, at the heart I believe everything I post, but assume when I ratchet it up a notch, it’s being done to illustrate a point.

Trust me, I know I’m not going get anyone to alter what they do. The fun (for me) is the exchange of rationale.

  42. blake March 18th, 2011 at 10:18 am

He hit 30 in 137 games last year and 30 in 124 games in 2009. If he’s healthy all season and can play 150+ games then Alex has another monster season or two left in him. He hasn’t swung the bat like he has this spring since the 09 playoffs.

    Y’s Guy -

    Just tuned in.

I’ve been a busy bee going over the league rules/guidelines and also the injury reports. :)

I’ll take a look at the catching report. Thanks.

We do have a league that’s right in the middle. :?

New Post- Friday morning notes: Minor concern in the bullpen

  45. Ys Guy March 18th, 2011 at 10:23 am

d, what he does in the catcher’s article is look at ‘back end value’ in other words, how far down in the draft can you find a usable catcher. he doesnt go into the differences between the guys at the top of the catcher’s market, because you are going to do fine with vmart, posey and mc cann

  46. Doreen March 18th, 2011 at 10:28 am

    Ys Guy -

    Just read it.

Ironically, catcher is the position I’ve spent the most time on so far. For no particular reason. :)

  47. Yankees Gameday March 18th, 2011 at 4:09 pm

With AJ you take the good and you take the bad. The yanks don’t need a pitching coach… they need Mrs Garrett… here is your 2011 rotation: http://yankeesgameday.blogspot.com/
