I missed the Draft & went on auto-pick. I got a good offense & a lot of closers! LOL! Only 2 SP. Sorry I couldn?t have picked some slots myself! Too many Sux players too.

Ray, actually not a bad roster. There are plenty of SP left for you to add.

“I wish, that would be incredible…most of the Bowl system has lost pre BCS tradition anyway. all 11 conference winners, 5 at large bids would be a lot of fun. The only loss would be the Rose Bowl, that does have a special feel to it”

If nothing else, it would allow the Boise States of the world to legitimize themselves. It would also make the regular season much more compelling. Now, if you lose even 1 regular season game, your championship hopes are basically done.

My grandma was a very serious player so I always felt it in my blood.

I learned last year and picked it up very quickly and now I love playing. My aunt told me I am getting too good for the family game (I started with $5 in change and now have over $43- and I didn’t play all summer cause it conflicted with the beach) and should start looking into tournaments. So I did. LOL. I sometimes play online too.

If you are interested in picking the game up again, I would love to get a regular game going. Some other family members are making playing difficult, so I am trying to find people to play with. I got my own set for my birthday.

Are you still there because I need some help with my draft. I don’t have enough SP or a closer to the best of my knowledge. I am going out in less than an hour, but will be back later. Might you have some time to help me.

  25. Betsy March 21st, 2011 at 1:54 pm

Blake, I’m just getting to this now, but saying Lackey and Nova is a coin flip is really reaching, IMO, given that this would be Nova’s first full season (plus, Lackey should improve off of last year – maybe not a huge improvement, but he should be better). I know we like our kids, but Nova is completely unproven.

  26. pat March 21st, 2011 at 1:55 pm

Yankees taking 6 starters on a 2 hour bus ride. Kind of surprised.

  29. Rich in NJ March 21st, 2011 at 1:59 pm

I don’t see any reason to expect Lackey to improve.

  30. blake March 21st, 2011 at 1:59 pm

    Betsy,

Maybe a little….but Nova still has upside. Lackey pretty much is what he is at this point and that wasn’t all that good. In terms of which guy is more of a sure bet to say win 12 games and post a 4 something ERA…..that’s probably Lackey. In terms of which guy has a chance to do better than that…..it might be Nova. In other words, Nova is less proven but has more upside……plus he’s about 15 million cheaper.

  31. blake March 21st, 2011 at 2:00 pm

    Lester/ Halladay…..Halladay is winning.

  32. Pat M. March 21st, 2011 at 2:01 pm

BoSox need for Lackey to stem the tide of decline, if not they are in trouble…..He’s getting closer to one curveball away from a blown out elbow……You can hear the clicking of the clock if you stand close enough…….Everyone focuses in on Beckett and Dice-K and rightfully so, however they need Lackey to improve and not digress any further

  33. Betsy March 21st, 2011 at 2:04 pm

Blake, that’s fine, but we’re talking about this year…..not about who we might want 3 or 4 years down the road. I’m not saying Nova will be bad this year, but even though he might be our #4 (I still think he should be #5), in reality on teams with good staffs, he’d be a #5. At that, I’d be fine with a 4.6 or so ERA………I expect Lackey to be quite a bit better than that.

  37. stuckey99 March 21st, 2011 at 2:07 pm

Not sure I’m looking for much different from Lackey. He had a 4.34 ERA in Fenway, and he got somewhat fat by pitching against the O’s 5 times, which was his most starts against any one team.

“Mariano Rivera stretched himself out with two innings Monday in a Yankees’ minor-league game.

“Rivera, pitching for Single-A Tampa against the Blue Jays’ Single-A squad, threw 11 pitches in the first inning and 25 pitches overall. The Yankees closer gave up one earned run, two hits with two strike outs. ”

Is anyone else offended that Single-A hitters would dare swing the bat against Rivera?

Shouldn’t they just keep their head pointed to the ground until they take three strikes and walk back to their dugout without making eye contact?

pls explain this inconsistency you speak of….your original post didnt make it clear to me what you were getting at/referring to. while doing so, take that outside observer look you take and read your post again and tell me if you thought it was objective/fair-minded.

Don’t worry about my sleep……I am used to 3-4 hour nights of sleep. Its not a problem.

If Nova spends the whole year in the rotation he has a great shot at ROY.

There are no obvious favorites in the AL

  74. RS March 21st, 2011 at 2:40 pm

Looking at the lineup, it seems that Girardi didn’t want to take a chance on stirring up drama by batting Cano third in Teixeira’s absence…

I don’t know what to think about Lackey. I wonder if it was one big adjustment period. And porous defense. He’s never pitched well at Fenway, and the fans are baseball crazed.

Unfortunately he’ll probably pitch better. He’s better than his numbers were last season.

SAS….The storm that blew thru here last night was an event, so beware…In fact it’s cold, windy and it’s raining again as I type this……MTU….As for Ivan, if he gets 28-30 starts he can go 12-6 ERA in the mid 4.00′s, with a K rate around 6.0……He’s going to be better than many have believed prior to camp

  77. stuckey99 March 21st, 2011 at 2:41 pm

“I love when Girardi posts the line up and 10 people complain that he isn’t trying to win the game”

Well, he did lost 67 of them last year.

    Had to be intentional, right?

GB – thanks for that story about that kid with the seminoma. Life is funny sometimes.

You’re most welcome, Joe. Just shows that some bad things can turn out pretty well after all.

I’m on an iTouch and it only shows like 30 comments per page view. So I’m going to beg off of copying and pasting.

Someone in the last thread said that Ivan or Garcia did this last year. And you said that you knew that, but it’s no guarantee they would do it in 2011.

So, the gist of it us that you said that the Sox back end was better and you brought up stats. That’s great. But there’s no guarantee that the Boston pitchers will repeat their last three years either.

So basically there is no winner, and you’re right you didn’t declare yourself as such. My point is you went through a lot of trouble of posting stats (and letting us know it was on very little sleep) but there’s no guarantee that any of the numerous pitchers you posted will repeat their historical numbers. So it really is wait and see. Or we could enjoy watching the Yankees play it out this season.

It just seems like a circular argument. And one I’m
prepared to jump off of. :P

mick, thinking not. The way our league works is that you get the highest points for wins.

Pitching is always the way to go.
He can always peddle them off to the needy for a bat.

    =================================
    Wrong thinking.
If you had a choice of Lackey or Nova, only a fool would choose Lackey.

  88. mick March 21st, 2011 at 3:07 pm

I’m not saying Nova will be bad this year, but even though he might be our #4 (I still think he should be #5), in reality on teams with good staffs, he’d be a #5
    ============================================
    Why is Nova a 5 and not a 4?
    Does it really matter?
Why not give the kid a shot? Only believe in sure things?
What a way to go thru life.

    ——————–

you said a lot so i will break it down point by point and respond to each of your well laid out thoughts.

“Someone in the last thread said that Ivan or Garcia did this last year. And you said that you knew that, but it’s no guarantee they would do it in 2011.” – yes, i believe the poster said that garcia outpitched dice k last year and i said the overall numbers were very similar for both, but garcia hasnt given consistent innings in the last few years…..i didnt say anything was set in stone for 2011, just gave my reason for why i think dice k may be a bit more reliable in 2011 (2010 numbers similar, longer track record for dice k better)

“So, the gist of it us that you said that the Sox back end was better and you brought up stats. That’s great. But there’s no guarantee that the Boston pitchers will repeat their last three years either.” – the gist of what i said was that i am under the opinion that the sox back end is better. i was asked to prove it so i brought up the statistics i was asked to provide to support my opinion…….there is no guarantee anything holds true in 2011, nor did i say there was…..i provided the data to support my opinion as we enter the year.

“My point is you went through a lot of trouble of posting stats (and letting us know it was on very little sleep) but there’s no guarantee that any of the numerous pitchers you posted will repeat their historical numbers. So it really is wait and see. Or we could enjoy watching the Yankees play it out this season.” – it wasn’t a lot of trouble, took me 10 minutes……my only point for bringing up sleep was because it was 1:30AM, my wife was sleeping and i didnt want to get up and use the computer to aggregate stats for the purposes of that discussion yet i was being constantly asked to support my opinion and i could not do so

There is no winner….which is why i found it comical that one guy claimed he won a difference of opinion discussion.

“So it really is wait and see. Or we could enjoy watching the Yankees play it out this season.” – exactly…..i did say lets discuss in july at one point last night

“It just seems like a circular argument. ” – tell me when the last time someone on this message board admitted being wrong and we can find the first ever non circular argument ever to take place on this particular blog.

BoSox need for Lackey to stem the tide of decline, if not they are in trouble
    =================================
    What about Beckett?
At this point his value lies in the postseason, if they can get there.

  91. mick March 21st, 2011 at 3:10 pm

Who won the most recent debate in here, I’d love to know.

  92. Carlo March 21st, 2011 at 3:17 pm

there are no winners in debates on this board…..only losers of time. charlie sheen wins, no one else.

  93. mick March 21st, 2011 at 3:59 pm

sometimes the manner of debate is both infantile and profound at the same time….amazing!
