Yankees claim left-hander

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Mar 23, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Yankees just made this announcement.

Today the Yankees have acquired LHP Jose Ortegano off waivers from Atlanta and optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He will report to Minor League camp.

In 2010 with Triple-A Gwinnett and Single-A Myrtle Beach, he combined to go 5-15 with a 5.98 ERA (131.0IP, 87ER).

Sorry, I initially wrote that he’s a left-handed reliever, but Ortegano was a starter last year. I just have to imagine he’ll work as a reliever in Scranton. That rotation is pretty full.

Being a LHP pitcher is like having an annuity even if you basically suck.

And so another chess piece is moved.

    Fascinating.

    Change of scenery move?

    From the last thread.

I think the person suggesting Joba for Slowey was being facetious, but the Twins would do that should it ever be put on the table.

YankeeFem, that’s the only thing about MiLB-TV.com. They show a few AA games but nothing below that. Mostly AAA. Love at least getting all of the Yankee minor league games on radio…except You’ll like watching both Mitchell and later on, Marshall. The next wave of arms.
    _______
Sounds good, and I am excited to see both. The future M & M Boys? ;)

I had milb-tv back when Hughes went up to AAA, but as you said, I recall they showed maybe one Trenton playoff game, but that was it. But still it is something, and we will have some nice pitchers in AAA to watch. I think I will add milb at some point in order to watch SWB, and especially Brackman, and DJ.

An NJ local station used to show the occasional Trenton game but not any last year. I am hoping to get out to SI to see some of the lower level prospects. The trip is kinda of a pain, but we should have some decent talent there also. I want to especially see Chris Cabrera and DePaula, and potential RP’s in Kahnle, Mullee. As I will likely see them early and then not for a while, I will be interested to get your take on Charleston when you get to see them.

    yankeefeminista March 23rd, 2011 at 5:04 pm

Of course Cabrera will probably be at GCL and not sure when DePaula will arrive, but many think he will end up in Trenton eventually if he ever gets his visa.

Do or die for the Twins this year, they need to see performance from their 3-4-5 or else run the risk of being labeled an organization that doesn’t develop starting pitching.

” That’s just one thing that never crossed my mind, whether I’m making the team or not. ”

As Mitre was quoted as saying yesterday.
Could he be resigned to the fact that he’s going to be moved ? Joe Girardi can be a little deft in what he says at times but it appears that Freddy Garcia and Bartolo Colon are going north. Either one may have told Girardi / Cashman that a long relief role is acceptable.

OMG ! the lack of Baseball news dredges up the great Joba debate again. He is nothing more than a 5th or 6th inning guy on this current team until he proves otherwise.

The regular season can’t start soon enough.

  44. DaSaint007 March 23rd, 2011 at 5:31 pm

Colon has to make the team.
Garcia is too good a pitcher, despite his recent struggles, not to make it also.
Nova deserves a roster spot, as the #5 starter.

But I won’t believed that Mitre will be either traded or released until I see it.

I know he has pictures of Girardi! Wonder if Girardi found them…and Mitre lost his leverage…

I don’t often take a definite stand here. I may have preferences and opinions, but I don’t draw lines in the sand. I also see nothing inherently wrong in people changing there opinions. situations are fluid, and what was true yesterday may not be true tomorrow, so why should I hold onto an opinion based on old facts? Flip-flopping gets a bad rap, if you ask me! (Unless a person is a serial flip-flopper and just goes with the way the wind changes.)

I would love to see them give him a chance to start again also, but considering what set up men are currently making…he could have future value in that role as well. If Soriano opts out and leaves then I would certainly rather pay Joba’s arbitration salary in 2012 than in free agency to fill that role….this is of course if Joba does his part and shows that he can handle that role.

Freddy Garcia will make a minor league start tomorrow. Girardi once again said there’s really nothing Garcia can show the Yankees to impact their decision at this point. This is just about getting him ready.

Yet more statements that make it seem like Garcia had the job no matter what (aside from injury).

    And “Goley”? Really?

The left saddlebag has 2 Cohn Silver Label Cabs (2007) and 2 Wilson 2006 Select Zins. The right saddlebag has the laptop, cords etc.

‘Gio’ will need some oats and alfalfa when he gets there. My Visa card is in the small plastic bag with the computer cords, please feed and water him down before you send him back. If it is raining his rain coat and hat are in the saddlebag with the wine.

His ID tag with his name and my number are on his collar, please let me know when he gets there. I would guess early Friday morning sometime.

Not end of the world if Montero goes down.
Let him play everyday and rake down there.

  111. Jerkface March 23rd, 2011 at 6:35 pm

I just don’t see why the Yankees would waste a 40 man spot for Romine before his time. Given the amount of play time and Molina’s major league defense and experience they would certainly rather burn him for 2-4 weeks?

    Stuckey :x

  112. blake March 23rd, 2011 at 6:36 pm

Heyman is feeling bad about himself because he just ate 5 roast beefs from Arby’s and he needed to vent somehow.

  113. mick March 23rd, 2011 at 6:37 pm

beat out for BUC applies when both cant hit.
if Montero spent his entire ST honing his catching skills that’s why he’s not hitting.
he needs time to do that in AAA.
    No need to panic betsy.

  114. Doreen March 23rd, 2011 at 6:39 pm

If Romine is the backup it’s because they want Montero to get regular work. Simple as that.

And it will be easier to send Romine back down than Montero.

  115. Jerkface March 23rd, 2011 at 6:41 pm

If Romine is the backup it should be with the expectation that he can stay in the big leagues, else there is little reason to put him on the 40 man unnecessarily.

    For those interested:

    From http://www.talkingchop.com/200.....-25-braves
    Braves scouting report pre-2010

    #14. Jose Ortegano, LHSP :: B/T: L/L Born: 08/05/1987 Ht: 6’1″ Wt: 145

    The Skinny:

Ortegano was signed by the Braves in 2003 out of Venezuela. He made his US debut in the GCL in 2006 in the GCL and then put together an impressive campaign in 2007 in the Appy League with a 1.48 ERA. In 2008 he posted a 4.62 ERA in Rome and was lost in the shuffle of the bevy of pitching prospects that the Braves had there, but the component ratios were strong and his FIP had him at 2.90, nearly 2 runs better than his pure ERA. He was a little bit unlucky with a .362 BAbip even though he was striking out 23% of hitters and walking less than 7%. He was promoted to Myrtle Beach in 2009 and then received a mid-season promotion to Mississippi in July. In 8 starts in AA he posted a 2.83 ERA with 42 K, 45 H and 19 BB in 47 IP. He split time between starting and relieving in Myrtle Beach but started full time in Mississippi and really shined.

The Good: He profiles a as small soft tossing lefties with outstanding control and pitching pitching savvy., but also has better stuff than most other lefty control guys, which shows in his stronger component ratios. He possesses a good curve and change and has a heavy fastball that creates a lot of grounders.

The Bad: He doesn’t have a frame that appears conducive to starting full time and though his stuff is better than some other lefties it still isn’t mind blowing.
…In a perfect world… Ortegano could settle into the back of a major league rotation or if there isn’t a spot he could be at least LOOGY for a long time.

  120. Giuseppe Franco March 23rd, 2011 at 6:42 pm

They aren’t worried about Montero’s stick. They KNOW he’s going to hit. It’s just a matter of time.

They’ve been focused on his defense the entire spring. If they feel he’s ready to catch a couple of big league games a week, he’ll be going up north with the team.

Romine certainly hasn’t earned a roster spot with his play this spring.

He looks bad at the plate and needs to go down and get AB’s, that’s all.
This ST was for catching, now he needs to hit.

  128. Jerkface March 23rd, 2011 at 6:46 pm

If Romine is the BUC, then I think he stays in the majors and the decision to bring up Montero would be based on getting rid of Martin. I just can’t see the Yankees putting Romine on the 40 man when he is 1-2 years away on their time table.
