Brian Cashman just made it clear that Kevin Millwood has “no chance” to break camp on the major league roster.

Here’s the lineup for tonight.

Brett Gardner CF
Derek Jeter SS
Mark Teixeira 1B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher DH
Eric Chavez 3B
Andruw Jones RF

Chad, is this going to be a televised game?

  2. RSM March 25th, 2011 at 2:10 pm

    From last thread…
Trading Mitre makes sense, for the Yankees AND for Mitre. He was never going to start for the Yankees, and they seem to have a plethora of long relief / spot starter candidates.

Here?s what disappoints me. Given regular work, Mitre is a serviceable back of the rotation starter for most clubs. Plus, he?s only 30 years old. With starting pitching having become such a high priced commodity, I just think Cashman could have gotten a better return. Seems like he just gave him away.

  3. Jerkface March 25th, 2011 at 2:11 pm

Seems like he just gave him away.

No, he got a viable centerfielder. Mitre was going to be cut, what did you expect in return? The dude had a 6 ERA starting last year and a 5 ERA the year before that.

  4. Jerkface March 25th, 2011 at 2:11 pm

Great to see Chavez back in the lineup.

  5. blake March 25th, 2011 at 2:15 pm

anything at all in return was a good get for Mitre. He was going to be cut loose soon.

Really interested to see if Nova has the same action on that slider that he had from the other night….see if he can throw that pitch consistently because if he can it opens up new possibilities for him and raises his upside.

Not worried about Hughes velocity at this time of year, still in the range where he could be building arm strength or going through a little dead arm, or just not totally cutting it loose yet. He was missing bats and getting late swings the other night….so I think he’s ok.

  6. Fran the original March 25th, 2011 at 2:18 pm

Guess the Yankees want Nunez to be able to play the OF. Would make him much more versatile/valuble as a back-up.

  7. Jerkface March 25th, 2011 at 2:18 pm

Really don’t understand how we can be less than a week from opening day and have a spring training game without ANY form of TV or Radio coverage. That is annoying to me. Its 2011. Put a camera behind home plate that covers the whole field and just leave it on and let me watch it without announcers.

  8. Mell March 25th, 2011 at 2:21 pm

“Mitre is a serviceable back of the rotation starter for most clubs”

He might be for a half dozen or so clubs. Bad ones. A 4th outfielder type was more than reasonable return.

“Put a camera behind home plate that covers the whole field and just leave it on and let me watch it without announcers”

    The question answers itself.

Spring training games are a loss leader for YES. They make more money broadcasting something else.

If this wasn’t the case, they’d do a full-on production or the sort you suggested.

  13. Irreverent Discourse March 25th, 2011 at 2:24 pm

mell – the turner braves channel does that between innings instead of showing commercials. it’s one of the greatest things ever :)

Ledger_Yankees Cashman will hold meetings today about starting pitchers. Not promising any decisions though.

  17. upstate kate March 25th, 2011 at 2:32 pm

When the games are on MY9 up here there are no commercials in between innings. Sometimes you can catch the announcers having conversations when they don’t realize they are still on the air.

  18. 108 stitches March 25th, 2011 at 2:34 pm

My jury is still out whether Andruw Jones can make a serviceable 4th outfielder or not. His bat hasn’t thrilled anybody and he just looks like a shell of what he once was.
He was once thought to be a PED user and he looks like his strength has been sapped.

  19. REZ12 March 25th, 2011 at 2:35 pm

Nets have the lowest local TV ratings in the NBA at 0.29. The 29th ranked team, the Clippers, have ratings that are nearly 3x higher.

A Yankees game with no announcers and an overhead camera, with limited production, will probably outrate a fully-produced Nets telecast.

No reason for them not to televise most ST games.

  20. Vineyard Yankee March 25th, 2011 at 2:35 pm

The Yankees will break camp with the following, imo:

    BUC: Molina
    BUIF’s: Nunez and Chavez.
    Long Man: Garcia
    4th & 5th: Nova and Colon.
    BUOF’er: Jones

“My jury is still out whether Andruw Jones can make a serviceable 4th outfielder or not”

I think he can play defensively well enough if he wants to….I’m just not sure what he has left with the bat. His swing is really terrible right now and has been for a few years now, never was great but he was super athletic and could make up for it. I think the biggest thing with him will be whether he will stay motivated and interested enough to contribute as a back up……when he signed he said it was because he thought he could get a lot of playing time with the Yankees…..how will he react if he doesn’t?

  24. vinny-b March 25th, 2011 at 2:37 pm

    “# J. Alfred Prufrock March 25th, 2011 at 12:27 pm

Spot on. I’m not sure if Cash is being overruled or he’s merely making decisions in accordance with a misguided win-now mandate, but either way, as you point out, it’s a counterproductive and often self-defeating way to run a team if winning as many WS as possible is truly your goal.
    ///
I couldn’t begin to speak to whose behind this, but IIRC Cashman’s ultimatum to George was autonomous rule or I’m gone.
Maybe the 2009 ring caused some inward change in sensibility for Cashman, although my take on 2009 was great, the joy of winning & now the yanks have some breathing room to REALLY wind into building something much more enduring.
Part of me hopes your speculation is true, another cautions that if so, we’re really up s*it’s creek.”

I was looking at past threads trying to find out (to no avail). This sounds serious.. ?

  28. blake March 25th, 2011 at 2:41 pm

“montero will be crushed if he doesnt head north”

I don’t know if he will or not but if the Yankees didn’t feel pretty confident that they were taking him as the back up catcher when Cervelli went down then they probably shouldn’t have even gave that as an option publically. If they send him back to AAA after everyone thought he was making the team then it just gives the media fuel to write about him failing…etc etc.

They probably should have just kept quite and let everyone assume he was going back to Scranton one way or another and then surprise everyone and take him if he had played well.

  29. Bad Scooter March 25th, 2011 at 2:42 pm

They can’t send down Jesus because he is slumping with the bat this spring. Slumping with his defense, sure send him down and get some more innings behind the plate. This kid raked the second half of last year at AAA and hit welll in prior spring trainings. He didn’t forget how to hit. He’s focusing on his defense right now.

  30. Jerkface March 25th, 2011 at 2:42 pm

No reason at all, except the contract they signed to allow them to broadcast Nets games to begin with.

YES doesnt have to do it, put a camera in every park and run the games on mLB.TV

  31. Eroc March 25th, 2011 at 2:44 pm

“montero will be crushed if he doesnt head north”

It’s the Yankees own fault for portraying it like he had a legit. shot to win the job, especially once Cervelli went down.

When you do that to a prospect, especially in this market, he better win the job or get ready for the slew of articles bashing him. You have to protect him at this young stage

  32. stuckey99 March 25th, 2011 at 2:45 pm

  35. Mell March 25th, 2011 at 2:47 pm

“montero will be crushed if he doesnt head north”

Probably be disappointed, but I doubt he’ll be crushed. Fact is he hasn’t earned the job. One day he will, and that one day probably isn’t all that far away, and hopefully that and the idea that he still needs a little work on his game will serve as his motivation……if indeed he’s actually sent down in the first place.

  36. Vineyard Yankee March 25th, 2011 at 2:48 pm

I hink they will send down Montero (AAA) and Romine (AA) so they can play everyday. Cervelli will be DL’ed with Molina getting the BU job. When Cervelli is healthy and ready then it will be decision time based on what the present situation is with the catching corps.

The team should not let the media pressure them into anything, but that doesn’t mean they should ignore them. With how much the media is around everything these days they should be insulating the younger guys from media scrutiny/pressure. No one wants to read an article about how they suck before they even get a chance to play.

  60. Jerkface March 25th, 2011 at 3:04 pm

And just because other teams do something doesn’t mean its the best approach. Most teams leave prospects beyond their ready point for cash reasons. Not all prospects are created equally or should be treated as such.

  61. blake March 25th, 2011 at 3:05 pm

“What the internet and sports radio does with Montero starting the year at AAA should not be a consideration. ”

Is anyone truly opposed to 20 days for a tangible benefit down the road to the Yankees, OR (mind you) any team he could conceivably be dealt to?

Strikes me as something of a no-brainer with starting catcher in place. Yes, you can argue the $$$$$$ means nothing to the Yankees, but doesn’t it increase his value league-wide, which is not objectionable even if the Yankees plan to keep him?

“And just because other teams do something doesn’t mean its the best approach. ”

It is if the Yankees perhaps would like to leave their options open to dealing Montero to another team.

I mean they have Sanchez and Romine in the system and Martin is the current starter. If that extra year might mean something to say … Seattle … down the road, shouldn’t the Yanks at least consider it?

  65. Irreverent Discourse March 25th, 2011 at 3:08 pm

Heyward did start the year with the Braves and they said all spring that he wasn’t going to….they said he was going to AAA but he played so well that he made them change their minds. Unless you’re pretty sure you’re taking the player then that’s probably the best way to do it….that way there are no expectations and no perception of failure if it doesn’t work out.

This. If the Yankees don’t take Montero north with them after all the talk this spring then it will be viewed as if he failed. Some Yankee fans know that’s not the case but that won’t stop the media from writing column after column about how Montero didn’t make the team…etc etc.

  70. Irreverent Discourse March 25th, 2011 at 3:12 pm

blake – with these high upside guys getting their initial contracts in the tens of millions it behooves any team to wait as long as possible to make that initial call-up. if you aren’t 100% certain that the player is ready to play every day (and need to relegate him to a backup role to further development i.e. montero) then you save yourself money in the long run and trade value in the short term by practicing patience.

Viewed by who? Anyone that matters? In the end that’s what it’s all about. In the eyes of the Yankees, Montero will not be viewed as a failure. If some in the media and/or portions of the fan base take the dim view and say he’s failure, it really doesn’t matter all that much.

  75. Mell March 25th, 2011 at 3:21 pm

The rule is at least 20 games from last season at a position and once 10 games have been played at a position during the current season.

However, with Nunez, in 2010 it was 15 at 3B, 11 at SS and 1 at 2B. So – shrug?
