Feliciano likely to miss Opening Day
The immediate news out of today’s pregame session with Joe Girardi is that Pedro Feliciano is almost certainly going to open on the disabled list. He was supposed to throw today but his arm didn’t feel good, so the session was cancelled.
Without him, it seems likely that Steve Garrison will make the Opening Day lineup. Garrison has been pretty solid this spring. He’s a lefty who could also pitch multiple innings, and he’s on the 40-man (a significant issue considering the Yankees already need to find room for two pitchers, a catcher and Eric Chavez).
Speaking of which, something is in the works with Romulo Sanchez. Girardi couldn’t go into specifics, but it sounds like he could be traded, possibly at some point today.

This really doesn’t sound good at all; Chad, are they going to send him for an MRI?
BUC on the way for Sanchez? Molina just doesn’t do it for me.
Any news on Chris Di ckerson?
A small bit of Schadenfreude for beaten down Met fans.
DT-
I like your guess on RS.
Would need to be a decent one. RS isn’t total chopped liver IMO. He could help many teams.
Especially NL ones.
This is a big deal if Feliciano is down for any length of time……….
“(Oh yeah, if they lose again today I will be back with my latest final Jeopardy question. Hopefully bojo is here to answer it.)”

“What is 10 ?

That’s my boy!!!
Based on the available alternatives Garrison makes a lot of sense.
They were stretching him out to start in the minors so he can serve a few purposes.
“This is a big deal if Feliciano is down for any length of time……….”
If Logan, Joba, and Robertson pitch well, I don’t think so.
Unreal…Feliciano pitched about a million innings for the Mets, now his arm falls off in Spring training….
And of course, He’s a lefty.
I hope they will have another backup catcher. As Jerkface has been saying, Molina doesn’t quite cut it.
Chad Moeller may not be anything special, but he’s a lot better option than Molina.
Rich, he’s a lefty and they just signed him to a big deal; it isn’t good news any way you cut it.
Betsy-
It’s just a hunch but I don’t think Feliciano will be out for more than 15 days max.
Rich, you sent me to google with schaudenfreude. I like it.
Sadly for Mets fans, that’s about all they’ll have for the foreseeable future.
No surprise with Cashman looking to move Romulo Sanchez. He wasn’t in plans and is out of options. Cashman can be creative with effective use of the DL for 40-man space. Immediately, Marte and Corona go on the 60-day DL. Cervelli and Feliciano go on the 15-day DL.
Getting a BUC this late is a problem. He’ll have to learn the entire staff in a hurry.
unless the back up catcher is Montero, it doesnt matter. Cervelli will probably be back in a couple weeks..
Sox hate being favorites so much the Gammons spin machine has been deployed?
pgammo One NL club brought in all ST scouts & those who saw Yanks and Red Sox unanimously picked NY to finish 1rst

Ability trumps handedness. He’s a nice luxury to have, but they can overcome any potential loss quite easily.
Thanks, DT.

It’s not the end of the world, either. Given the bullpen they have, they won’t roll over and die without Feliciano for a few weeks.
No, they definitely have a very good pen, that’s to be sure. Well, I hope it’s nothing too serious.
I found it funny that Soriano declared yesterday that he wasn’t going to throw another inning in ST, as if it was his decision to make, lol
Now there’s one anonymous scout that isn’t dumb, lol
Haven’t heard a thing in recent days with Ronnie Belliard. He can’t possibly be considered as somebody going north.
GB-
Having 1 good LOOGY is fortunate. Having 2 is a real luxury.
Garrison can fill in just fine for a while.
Now if it was Mo, or Soriano I’d be concerned.
Not over this.
Trading for a BUC ? Martin, Montero, Romine, Cervelli, Molina………………doubtful.

No I wont make it to anymore games before they leave. Sadly I wont get to see them until May.
I posted yesterdays Trenton game to my blog. I took pictures this time too.

At least you’ll get to see Charleston; they’ll be in New Jersey end of April
Brackman’s pitching today means that he could open on the 7th at LHV. If I can make it, I plan to go.
Thanks for info on Suttle, btw.

Sox hate being favorites so much the Gammons spin machine has been deployed
————————-
Gammons was interviewed on a radio show in Miami yesterday and said he thought the Yankees could win 100 games this year even with the injury and rotation issues, how is that a spin machine?
Only Martin and Cervelli are on the 40 man roster from that list.
Molina is just a body. Nobody paid any attention to him until the last few days. It shouldn’t be all that hard to replace a guy with no upside and 40 career major league at-bats on his resume.
BobKlap Brian Cashman on the Red Sox: “They’re still the team to beat, but I feel a lot better about my team than I did six weeks ago.”

Maybe Mauer and Morneau.
That’s more like it.

Montero/Romine – prevailing thought is they both need more seasoning (not sure I agree about Montero)
Molina – a zilch

There is apparently a lot of rain in store for us in Tampa too so I hope that it isnt raining next saturday because I have seen every team but Charleston and really want to see them. Was Sosa with Trenton last year? I guess some of the Trenton guys were in and out of Tampa before I started going because I didnt really know any of them. Also, that Cody Johnson who they got from Atlanta(i think) is really big.
When will Cash learn his lesson and stop signing relievers to high priced long term contracts.
The only one that ever worked out at least in the regular season was Gordon. I would be shocked if Soriano made it through the year
Dionysius Thelxinoe March 27th, 2011 at 12:25 pm
Molina will be fine until Cervelli comes back. Martin is going to get the majority of the work load anyway. The BUC is a minor piece of the puzzle.
Can someone tell me why it is such a big deal to hate on Molina and dont say that its because Montero should be the back up. I just dont see why people are getting so worked up over a guy that will probably only start a few games.

Rain is par for the course up here. Thank God for overhangs.
Nooo, Sosa was in low A. They have gone slow with him, teaching him better plate discipline and pitch selection. He is only 20.
Guess the Mets ran Feliciano into the ground, although IIRC they did want to sign him again this season.

No one is saying that BUC is a big deal. In fact it’s a VERY minor role, basically holding it down until at least Cisco’s return.
But I’m glad you think Molina will be fine. I don’t.

Steve Garrison will probably be used in low leverage situations and much the same for Molina.
I think people are jumping to conclusions with PF.
The report was that he had some tendonitis which he has experienced previously when preparing for the season.
Not all tendonitis is that serious.
Perhaps he justs needs a little more R and R ?

Johnson has huge power, so hopefully the Yankees can rework his swing to increase his ability to make contact. He also has some decent speed, but, not an especially good corner outfielder but does have a decent arm.
Some 1st of the day comments/responses…
“This is a big deal if Feliciano is down for any length of time……….”
As about a big a deal when Marte went down for the year last year.
re: Gammons/scouts – understand how big a shadow A-Rod projects over the team. If he looks like he has an MVP type year in him, that’s going to influence how people see this team.
Boston made no pitching moves. They only added two bats and project to have injured players healthy. They just SEEM better. A-Rod does the same for the Yankees. He looks like he has a .290/40/125 campaign in him, the perception of the Yanks change.
re: Last night. So the players outta the Yankees system that are here ALSO don’t count towards young players given a chance by the Yankees.
So if we’re super-qualified down to only players who were given a role proactively due to trading a veteran or letting a viable free agent veteran walk away, AND who initially struggled but were allowed to play through, I don’t see how THAT criteria applies to Montero.
He hasn’t struggled at the ML level.

Unreal…Feliciano pitched about a million innings for the Mets, now his arm falls off in Spring training….
______________
I was having an ongoing argument with another poster on Daily News blog that Feliciano was a risky sign because of the number of appearances he made over last few years. That poster seemed to think it was no big deal because he pitched to only a batter or two at the time. He couldn’t or wouldn’t understand the concept that warming up (including times warmed up without entering the game) also put a strain on the arm. Manuel was almost as bad as Torre in running a bullpen.
I hope he comes back soon, but those innings and warm-ups might be catching up to him.
I think Feliciano’s problem is that he was burned out by Joe Torre, it must have been some kind of osmosis…
GB7, I guess Heyer looked pretty good in today’s game, stuff was dancing, struck out Po who is in the Trenton line up.
Feliciano has averaged 60 innings over the last 5 years; let’s just hope it hasn’t caught up to him.
Buck Showalter sure open up a hornet’s nest in Beansville. The 2-week old story is still hot.

I can almost set my clock to the time of day that it will rain down here. One summer it rained right on cue at 4pm for a whole week.
Do you think that I will get to see Sosa in Tampa this season?
GB
Johnson looks like he could put up a lot of power. He had 2 hits and 2 Ks in yesterdays game.
Also, I am going to try to make it up to the Charleston ST game next saturday weather permitting, who on that team, besides Feliz, Sanchez, Culver should I watch?
Yes, love the zero walks. Assuming he is still only throwing the slider. I’d guess it is working well for him instead of the change up.
I really hope he is on schedule to pitch April 7th in LHV. That would be a doable ride. And Yanks play a day game. Even more perfect. Although the weather in LHV last time I was there was December football weather.
BoJo you are right….and Torre ruined a lot of bullpen arms…
This is totally O/T but I just found a library book that I checked out last year, now I have a 20 dollar fine. Thats like a whole month of mlb.tv. Ouch.
YankeeFem, Heyer will never dazzle anybody, but, he really does have an idea on the mound. Scouts don’t think much of him, but, at least so far, he pitches like an artist. And, he can fill so many roles. I would guess at the end of this season, he’s gone as a pick in the Rule 5. It’s like Jonathon Ortiz, no dazzle, just results.
I think we all should stay positive here. We are not talking about our starters. I would rather have Feliciano on the DL now rather than later in the season. As for a back up catcher, if he is a decent defensive catcher, that is all that matters for the moment.
It would be nice to have an all star at every position, but that rarely happens.
Right now this teams seems pretty good considering all the fear this winter.
TY, I haven’t seen much on the new Charleston players, but, Deleon and Duran would be good views. Pitcher Bryan Mitchell should also be there. He’s one to watch.
We’re off to see the Apache Trail today. It is supposed to be quite special. I am looking forward to it. The weather didn’t completely cooperate; it isn’t warm enough to swim, but it is gorgeous.
‘BUC on the way for Sanchez?’
==================
So then why do you want a BUC ? For 2-4 weeks ? Obtain a BUC to impede the arrival of some the best catching prospects in Baseball ?
If Molina is the guy he will probably be on the bench 5 – 6 days a week. The Yankees have plenty of offense to compensate for Molina one day a week.

I totally agree, a lot of people argue about the fact that Molina cant hit but as long as he can catch then he doesnt need to hit, we have enough power in the lineup. They just need to keep all the big guns in the linuep when he is out there if that is the case. I too think that our team looks darn good and a lot better than everyone expected starting the spring. I am excited to see how everything plays out.
