    Go Montero!

And Monterey too for that matter.

    And go Pena!

  2. blake March 27th, 2011 at 10:05 am

Was kinda hoping Brackman or Betances would get the call today….oh well.

  3. GreenBeret7 March 27th, 2011 at 10:08 am

Buddy spent 2 yars as a Ham Fighter. The way he pitches, I’m guessing the hams won.

  4. blake March 27th, 2011 at 10:09 am

    LGY,

You want Pena to make the team?

Never heard of this Cuddy Barlyle guy.

  11. Betsy March 27th, 2011 at 10:15 am

ST doesn’t count at all, so who cares if Beckett has been awful or the Sox have lost 9 in a row? Last ST, Lackey had like a 2 ERA and he had a mediocre season. The Yankees are under .500 – does it matter? Not one bit.

The story of the little girl who saved her friend is so heartwarming – good for the Yankees and Alex for rewarding her. I don’t even know CPR, but it’s fantastic that they are teaching it to young kids.

Nats trade Nyjer Morgan to Brewers for “Nails” Dykstra’s kid.

  13. Betsy March 27th, 2011 at 10:17 am

Shouldn’t AJ or Phil be pitching today?

As to Montero, he’s a special talent – and the Yankees think he needs more work in the minors – that’s why he’s going down. If they didn’t care so much about his development, perhaps they would bring him north. I really don’t get why it’s SO important that Montero make the team right now.

  14. MG March 27th, 2011 at 10:18 am

is Buddy Carlyle the batting practice pitcher or a lucky fan who won the lottery?

All that’s known or been said is that Cervelli is now out of his boot. What’s the next “step” in the process ? How soon can he be expected back which includes getting his timing back and correct footwork behind the plate under the watchful eyes of Butch Wynegar ?

  16. MTU March 27th, 2011 at 10:18 am

    GB-

Guess the brew crew felt a little more naked than we thought when they moved Dickerson.

Thought they had a “surplus” of OF’ers ?

  17. LGY March 27th, 2011 at 10:19 am

    Yes sir

  18. MTU March 27th, 2011 at 10:19 am

    Talk about wasting ST innings.

  19. blake March 27th, 2011 at 10:20 am

    LGY,

You think Nunez should play every day or what?

  20. GreenBeret7 March 27th, 2011 at 10:21 am

MTU, they needed an arm with 2 starters already in drydock. They had 4 outfielders but no real leadoff type hitter.

    “Trisha …

I, for one, LOVE your RS losing streak bulletins.

They rank right up there with GB7?s ST game updates.”

    :)

Because you are a cool dude. You’d have to love the rivalry to love the bulletins! And mamma mia, we obviously love that rivalry!!! YAHOO!!!!!

And you’re a thinking person I can tell D. After all, anyone vibing in on the biggest story of ST – the Sux and their guaranteed 2011 World Championship – would be having a blast with the nine straight losses.

Of course you have to have at least a little but of fun in your personality to appreciate the humor and irony involved in all of it…

    ;)

And my man bojo-y also has exactly that.

    :D

  22. MG March 27th, 2011 at 10:22 am

MTU, shows how little spring training games mean. The players are ready, they are just playing out the string until the season starts. But starting Buddy Carlyle, a 34 year old washout from Japan, who last pitched a good game at Gwinnett in 2009, is about as low as it gets.

  23. Betsy March 27th, 2011 at 10:22 am

Ouch, someone on another board just pointed out the Yanks’ brutal schedule this year. I believe out of the last 50 or so games, we’ve got 10 more road than home, as well as a WC trip and trip to Fenway.

  24. MTU March 27th, 2011 at 10:23 am

    GB-

I understand. I just thought the re-jiggering was kind of funny.

It’s of no real consequence either way.

Dickerson looked very impressive in his debut.

    :)

    MG-

Glad I didn’t have tickets to that game.

    Trisha-

Last I checked Doreen was a “dudette”.

  27. MG March 27th, 2011 at 10:26 am

I just noticed that Carlyle pitched to a 0.72 ERA with 48 K’s in 38 innings at Trenton in 2004, how did the LoHud scouts who watch all those games fail to recognize he would be making an important late spring training start for the Yankees sometime in the future?

  28. LGY March 27th, 2011 at 10:26 am

    Blake

I think Nunez would play so little Pena’s superior defense may be more valuable and even if it is not Nunez is too good of a prospect to play as little as I envision he would play on this team.

  29. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 27th, 2011 at 10:26 am

Betsy, if Phil had a terrible ST you would be posting about it nonstop. If AJ didn’t do well and got the #2 spot you would be beside yourself. As it was you questioned AJ getting it after he did well. So for ST not counting, you sure have been involved.

I think it is disingenuous for you to say that ST doesn’t count at all. Others may say it and totally mean and believe it. It doesn’t matter a whit to me, that’s for sure. But I am having a blast at the expense of the Sux.

This is an amazing opaque forum at times. I have spent my life here trashing the Sux, and I do it in ST and studious forumites step forward to tell me that ST means nothing?

The only refreshing part is that I don’t have to explain myself to everyone on this forum. Thank God there are people who can automatically get there without a road map!

  30. LoHudKnicks March 27th, 2011 at 10:27 am

“Buddy’s” real name is Earl Lester. Not surprisingly, he’s from Omaha, Nebraska. Good times.

  31. GreenBeret7 March 27th, 2011 at 10:27 am

Carlyle pitched in the Yankee system with Trenton and Columbus in 2004. He’s just a filler. Everyone else is getting their side sessions in now to get ready for their weekend starts.

  32. Betsy March 27th, 2011 at 10:28 am

Let’s hope Andruw Jones slept for the entire 2 1/2 hour bus trip to Fort Myers so he could show some semblance of life out in right field.

  35. blake March 27th, 2011 at 10:29 am

    LGY,

That’s a fair point. If he can play outfield some though then he could have a lot of value as a super utility guy…..I really haven’t seen him in the outfield much so I don’t know how good he is out there.

GB, today is an IMPORTANT late spring training game, if the Yankees lose someone on a Sox blog will make fun of them. Pitching Carlyle is another blunder, plain and simple.

  38. Betsy March 27th, 2011 at 10:30 am

Wow, how condescending are you? I accidentally glanced at the rest of your post. If you want to call me dumb and clueless, which is basically what you did, drive out to where I live and try it to my face. Or, if you’re too gutless for that, at least be direct and use those words here. You are not an Einstein, you are not a genius – you are not the only person in the world with an opinion. Betsy, this is how it matters …

I (and others) ENJOY any RS losing streak – I don’t care if they happen on a video game. And it’s OK if you don’t. :-)

Btw, Lackey’s 2 ERA ST? It’s his Fenway #’s, where he has a history of mediocre-to-bad performances. Everywhere else, I respect his bulldog demeanor. Unfortunately for him (and fortunately for us), he signed up to pitch half his games there.

  40. Crawdaddy March 27th, 2011 at 10:32 am

  47. MG March 27th, 2011 at 10:37 am

    Historical lesson about spring training:

Bob Welch won 27 games and the Cy Young award in 1990.

His spring training ERA (I lived in SF at the time so remember) was at least 10.00 and could have been 20.00, he was that bad.

  48. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 27th, 2011 at 10:37 am

“Trish, I saw the first part of your lecture and stopped………and don’t tell me what I would or wouldn’t do. Go ahead and celebrate the bad ST by the Sox if it makes you feel better, lol”

Betsy people are being entirely phony about this. It is a bold face falsehood to say this forum would be swimming along without a care if AJ blew up or Phil did or Garcia and Colon didn’t get the job done. Or if the Yanks lost nine straight games. Many if not most here would be puking.

Again, the people on this forum who like to have fun are probably having a blast with the fact that the vaunted team who is supposed to win it all has lost nine straight games. It is for those people that I post the Sux updates. I really don’t care about people without any sense of humor. They can ignore what I post about the Sux.

I greatly appreciate irony. There’s great irony in the ST of the team that is supposed to win it all (though I didn’t buy that from the beginning since I knew their question marks from last year would continue to be question marks, and their ST has done nothing but to buoy that perspective.)

I like to have fun with life. As a Yankee fan living close to beantown, watching the Sux take the pipe in ST is great fun. I’m thankful others here can appreciate the fun with me. Fun not shared loses some of its gleam.

    :D

Craw, yes I do! I hate, HATE being lectured to – even by my parents- and I also have NO tolerance for people who think they are better than they are. Trish is a lawyer – I suppose I could say that accounts for it, except that my father is one too and that’s not how HE acts.

Bob Welch 1990 Spring Training ERA: 17.72

People that are saying that ST numbers mean nothing are the same ones talking about the failures of Montero and Romine and trumpeting the arrival of the “Three B’s”. Make up your minds.

  55. Betsy March 27th, 2011 at 10:41 am

You’re judging as to whether certain people have a sense of humor based on whether they are taking great glee in the Sox having an off ST? How odd.

  56. 108 stitches March 27th, 2011 at 10:43 am

How low has Beckett’s stock fallen ? The former “ace” of the staff won’t get his 1st start until the Sux are in Cleveland. This way the Sux fans can hurl objects at their TV’s after seeing his early exit from the mound.

  57. GreenBeret7 March 27th, 2011 at 10:43 am

I guess we know who to blame if Mickey Mouse hangs himself.

  58. MG March 27th, 2011 at 10:43 am

GB, spring training numbers mean nothing but you can certainly learn things from observing spring training games and player performance, I think they are mutually exclusive. Hence my excitement about Banuelos and understanding that the Yankees are making the right choice by sending Montero down to play every day until they think he’s ready to play well in the big leagues.

Dionysis, … I don’t understand your point about Lackey. My point was that he had a brilliant ST and a mediocre year.

    ——————–

Brilliant ST – mediocre year … got it.

Simply ADDING to that (as opposed to disputing) that the key to Lackey as a RS pitcher seems to be his woeful Fenway numbers.

  60. blake March 27th, 2011 at 10:44 am

Clearly ST doesn’t matter…..if if did Adrian Gonzalez would’ve have made any outs yet.

  61. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 27th, 2011 at 10:46 am

“People that are saying that ST numbers mean nothing are the same ones talking about the failures of Montero and Romine and trumpeting the arrival of the “Three B’s”. Make up your minds.”

Thanks GB. I’m sure others have noticed the same thing about those who have been hanging on tooth and nail to everything happening in ST (Betsy that would be you – now don’t go and have a fit because I named you, since you asked me to, not that anybody here hasn’t noticed you dissecting ST) and then saying ST doesn’t count.

And Betsy, if your great admiration for the Sux has you thinking it’s fine to ignore their ST results, have a blast. But please don’t say that you wouldn’t be worrying if Phil or AJ fell apart in ST. Because you are the only one here who would believe that.

So for you to say ST means nothing makes me think that you are not in touch with yourself.

That’s not being condescending or thinking I’m better than everyone else. That’s being observant.

And if you don’t get or like my sense of humor, oh well. It’s not leaving here soon.

  62. LGY March 27th, 2011 at 10:47 am

Please dont assume others are as unevolved as you when it comes to ST results

    Betsy is not a cavewoman.

  63. Dionysius Thelxinoe March 27th, 2011 at 10:48 am

Yes, ST numbers are largely meaningless.

But in the same fashion that we can ENJOY seeing how Big Al is currently tearing the cover off the ball, and hope for big things from him this season … we can also the ENJOY seeing the RS stumble and hope for more of the same from them during the season.

  64. Crawdaddy March 27th, 2011 at 10:48 am

  67. Fran the original March 27th, 2011 at 10:49 am

    Good morning everyone.

IMO it’s not all about numbers in spring training. Obviously the Yankees used more than numbers to pick the #5 starter like Colon’s ability to warm up fast.

Teixeira was on the radio the other day and said ST is not about numbers for batters. It is about bat speed and feeling comfortable at the plate.

  68. GreenBeret7 March 27th, 2011 at 10:50 am

I never said that ST numbers mean that much, but, folks are sure giddy about Rodriguez. However, never understood how ST 15-20 years ago meant the difference between making a team or not and now they mean nothing. In 1951 Mantle come out of a Class C (High A ball” and made the team based solely on numbers). He was a bad defensive shortstiop that they turned into an outfielder. So, they do mean something.

This infield, this year will get more days off then you think. Robbie and Alex will get more DH AB then in previous years. And Derek will just get more days off period. I would be shocked if Nunez doesn’t make the team.

I don’t see any consistency in your arguments re: Montero and Numez. Defensively speaking catching is the hardest position on the field. Nunez is way ahead of Montero In that regard.

  81. Betsy March 27th, 2011 at 10:57 am

  82. blake March 27th, 2011 at 10:58 am

Jeter asked if he’d ever manage in interview this morning….he said no chance except maybe his kids little league team one day. Said he’s like to own a team….asked if he could own a team other than the Yankees. ….he said the Yanks are worth a lot of money, they’d have to give me a big discount.

Also asked about the Buck comments….he said as soon as he gets this stride thing down he’ll work on how he takes pitches. Ravech told him that their research had shown that he actually gets more inside strikes called on his than the average big leaguer…..Jeter looked into the camera and said “hear that Buck”

    You wouldn’t? :)

  93. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 27th, 2011 at 11:02 am

“Trish, I respect the Sox – I hardly admire them. I get that you despise then with the fire of a thousand sons. 9 game losing streak will mean nothing when all teams start off at 0-0. They’re a good team – if you think a bad ST means that they aren’t goody for you.”

You are still not getting it Betsy. Losing nine straight in ST is just another vehicle by which to have fun at the expense of the Sux. Losing nine straight in ST is also delicious irony when it happens to the team that was annointed to be God’s best.

How this all began, and posters vibed in on it at the time, was when the irrepresible “California”, who delights in posting negative things and giving Yankee injury reports all the time, made the mistake of coming here and saying something during their losing streak. It gave me the opportunity to throw it back in his face. And it took off from there.

And anyone saying that stuff like “that just eggs that troll on” is being in the very least unobservant. (not talking about you.) That jerk is here day and night and is happy to post his crap without one person paying any attention to him. He is here to stay. So you bet I’ll give it right back to him. In spades.

As you can imagine, I don’t care about ST results at all – unless they are the Sux ST results and they are bad ones.

    :)

  94. Betsy March 27th, 2011 at 11:02 am

The point was that Trish apparently thinks that if you don’t relish the Sox losing in ST, you don’t have a sense of humor. That’s beyond silly.

Before I go, let me introduce myself to everyone here.

Hi, my name is Trisha. I cannot stand the team from beantown (I call them the Sux). I grew up a Yankee fan living in beantown territory since I am in RI, not far from fenway field. The RI Yankee fans I know have always had an extremely heated rivalry with Sux fans – and vice versa.

You will notice that I take every opportunity I get to take shots at the Sux! I live for it. If they play the corner drug store and lose the game, I will delight in it.

Thanks for welcoming me to your forum. Have a nice day everyone!

I feel bad for Molina, the guy will probably get booed once they name him the backup or the first time he comes into an official game. He didn’t come to NY to dethrown the messiah(lol) he came to camp just like every single other guy hoping that something opened up for him because he needed a job. So he hasn’t hit since he got here, has he been able to competently catch the ball and throw it to the pitcher back on the mound? People are complaining that he can’t hit but thats not what a backup catcher is supposed to do, theyre supposed to back up the catcher. We have a ton of bombers in the lineup and if we are having to rely on a backup catcher’s bat to win games then something serious is going on. I for one, want to see Jesus as the catcher, not the backup so if it takes a bit longer then so be it.

  116. MG March 27th, 2011 at 11:12 am

Spring training means different things for different players:
    -Game results are completely meaningless
-Pitching stats for established big league pitchers (particularly starters) are meaningless
-Hitting stats for players making adjustments mean something but it’s more how they are making contact, not the actual stats
-Results for prospects can be meaningful because it provides the only view into how they can handle big league pitching and game situations, same for pitchers. That’s why you can get excited about Banuelos backing up a 76 mph curveball with a 96 mph fastball at age 20.

There is no universal rule about spring training performance, it all depends on the situation except that the game results mean NOTHING

If the end of our schedule is tough what about the beginning? We open up with what looks to be an improved Detroit team and Verlander. Then off to Minny for four games and then to Boston.
Followed by Baltomore, Texas, Toronto, Baltimore, White Sox, Toronto all of which figure to be tough games for us. The whole schedule is tough IMO lol.

I think he has great stuff and it is a question of mixing things up and showing different pitch patterns second time around. With new experienced pitchng coach he will learn that will have a better year. I expect him to win about 15 games, just like Hughes last year.

So Jeter will not play in 156 games this year. And Cano will play less than158 games at 2b this year. Also Robbie will get more than 2 games at DH.

Rich you can’t predict a thing and no one else can either. You have no clue who is going to win what, who is going to pitch well and who isn’t.

  150. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 27th, 2011 at 11:33 am

108, I think the people who say ST results are not meaningful mean that the WL record is not significant of anything since everyone starts out with a 0-0 record. But certainly ST has potential implictions, and if you have pitchers who struggled last year and they are still struggling in ST this year, you might start to wonder whether they are going to have trouble again. And as you said, it certainly has meaning for individual players.

I guarantee you that ST has some Sux fans worried. And well it should. Because the pitchers who struggled last year who are supposed to deliver them this year are still struggling. You’d have to be brainless not to be concerned.

When it’s your own team, of course you break it down more. And Yankee fans would be having nonstop conversations on this forum if AJ and Garcia and Colon all turned in bad springs. So while they say the results are meaningless, they are absolutely talking about the W-L record because reality shows you that they are total consternation when things go badly for individuals.

  151. Ys Guy March 27th, 2011 at 11:34 am

It’s actually brilliant because it demonstrates how provably false your initial post was.

ManBan was called a mid-to-back rotation guy and even a RP not long ago.

On one list Betances is rising, while Jim Callis though has him as strictly a BP arm. It’s fun reading, but I don’t take any of it to heart.

    DT-

Manny had appendicitis last season. That sidelined him for quite a while.

No pun on the “smallish” I take it ?

    ;)

    Thanks.

About the ‘smallish’ – I was also looking at his 4 innings per start ratio. Is that normal? Sorry, but I know next to nothing about the minors.

Thanks. I thought it was going to be difficult to follow everything but it actually made it more enjoyable and I definitely paid much better attention than I have been. The only problem with where I was sitting was that I couldnt always hear the home plate ump calling balls and strikes so a guy would end up on first and I wouldnt know how he got there. I assumed walks but then once I heard that someone got hit by a pitch so if I wasnt sure then I just wrote both. I think I will make it to one more of the minor league ST games. Next saturday is supposed to be the lower levels so I plan on watching Charleston. I hope Culver and Sanchez play.

Yes, they usually only go 5 innings in the minors, especially the lower levels where he spent most of his time.

Some of our most distinguished MiLB experts are : GB, YF, Phil the Thrill, SJ, and others who I apologize for failing to mention.

For future reference, they are some of our best go to people on the Minors.

If anyone is interested in an extra meaningless spring training game then check out my blog to see the game recap between the Trenton Thunder and the Pirates AA team. Dellin Betances pitched the first 3 innings, DJ Mitchell pitched 3 innings and Phil Bartleski blew the game. Its exciting stuff. Also includes a picture of CC and the workout group roster from yesterday.

    Agreed one million billion percent.

I think that whether or not ST “matters” or “means” anything is entirely subjective. ST matters and means a lot to some folks, and it doesn’t to others. It doesn’t mean anyone is wrong. People shouldn’t be mocked, IMO.

I’m hoping that at least THAT argument will finally end on March 31.

ST games count in alot of ways, but the one way they dont count at all is in wins or losses.

you dont manage to win, you manage to get your guys in.

your closer pitches the 5th or 6th innings.

you finish the game with scrubs who wont be on your team.

alot of things do matter but who won isnt one of them

  190. tyanksfan36 March 27th, 2011 at 12:13 pm

    YS Guy

The thing about last nights Red Sox loss is that Bobby Jenks was pitching in the late innings when they blew the game. That is significant because he will be pitching in that situation in a lot of their games. I do think it was a fluke though because even Mariano Rivera blows it sometimes which isnt reflective of his abilities. Like, I was concerned to see Soriano give up that run yesterday. I know they cant all be perfect everytime but you expect them to be.
