Pitching matchups vs. Detroit

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Mar 30, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

There was some debate about which Yankees starter should pitch the second game this season. There was never any debate about who would start Opening Day.

For the third year in a row, it’s CC Sabathia.

“He was not on the bubble,” Joe Girardi said. “His spot in the rotation really wasn’t up for discussion. For him (spring training) was to get ready.”

Thursday
LHP CC Sabathia (21-7, 3.18 ERA last season)
vs.
RHP Justin Verlander (18-9, 3.37)
1:05 p.m., YES Network and ESPN

Friday
Off day

Saturday
RHP A.J. Burnett (10-15, 5.26)
vs.
RHP Brad Penny (3-4, 3.23)
4:10 p.m., FOX

Sunday
RHP Phil Hughes (18-8, 4.19)
vs.
RHP Max Scherzer (12-11, 3.50)

  2. Ys Guy March 30th, 2011 at 10:13 pm

thousands of opening day tickets available on stubhub. lost for under $50!

  3. blake March 30th, 2011 at 10:13 pm

Hughes/Scherzer is almost as interesting as the opener.

  4. Joe from Long Island March 30th, 2011 at 10:13 pm

So we get FOX inflicted upon us in the second game of the season.

    Lovely.

  5. RMS March 30th, 2011 at 10:14 pm

There’s the latest update of our prediction chart. You have until first pitch of Opening Day to get in on the action. Many Ritter Sport Bars for the winner!

    :)

If you want in, please put my name in the post so I can find your prediction!

  8. Ys Guy March 30th, 2011 at 10:16 pm

joe, we get michael kay and various ‘broadcasters’ inflicted upon us every other day, so it’s an even trade imo.

  9. stuckey99 March 30th, 2011 at 10:16 pm

Trisha, if there is a real prize this year, doesn’t there have to be a tie-breaker..?

Runs scored, run differential. Some fun fact like Jeter BA or something?

  10. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 30th, 2011 at 10:20 pm

Stuckey, I figured I would just give all the winners the same prizer.

  11. blake March 30th, 2011 at 10:20 pm

Bard should be closing for the Red Sox

  12. NJ Pete March 30th, 2011 at 10:22 pm

trisha – could you please put me down for 102 wins. I’m feeling very optimistic about the season in light of all the “expert’s” predictions.

Arod’s gonna have an MVP type season.

  13. Ys Guy March 30th, 2011 at 10:23 pm

blake, wont be long imo. paps thinks he’s gonna get mo money next year but he is sadly mistaken. he will get felician money instead.

  14. Giuseppe Franco March 30th, 2011 at 10:23 pm

    Whoopeee!!!!!

I get the Pads/Cardinals game on Saturday.

Here’s hoping for a rainout so they’ll show the Yanks game instead.

  15. LGY March 30th, 2011 at 10:23 pm

    Melo is awesome.

  16. LGY March 30th, 2011 at 10:26 pm

Imposter Molina knocks 64 wins off my normal guess.

Whatever you are smoking, pass it around.

They were on pace to break 100 most of the year. This is a better team

  23. stuckey99 March 30th, 2011 at 10:41 pm

They were on pace to break 100 most of the year. This is a better team

    __________

For reference, after a win on Aug 28th, they were 79-50, a 99 win pace, tied with Tampa and 5.5 in front of Boston.

They proceeded to win 7 more in a row, and on Sept. 4, were 86-50, a 102 pace. They opened a 2.5 game lead on Tampa and a 9.5 lead on Boston.

At this point, they hit a Sept. swoon.

But yes, for most of the year the maintained a consistent 100 win pace and as high as 102 at late as 9/4, at which time their postseason was all but secured.

  24. Zach S March 30th, 2011 at 10:43 pm

Never understood the middle off day in a series.

  25. NJ Pete March 30th, 2011 at 10:44 pm

Thanks for making my point stucky and I think this is a better team. Maybe 102 might even be too low.

  26. NJ Pete March 30th, 2011 at 10:45 pm

Middle day off is only to protect the home opener

  27. Ys Guy March 30th, 2011 at 10:46 pm

zach they always try to schedule an off day after opening day to allow for a rainout makeup, which they might well need this year.

other than that, off days during series are quite rare .

I actually said earlier in the winter that I wanted Cash to look at Penny as a low cost option…as the 5th starter.

  54. BIG AL March 31st, 2011 at 4:30 am

Everyone is entitled to an opinion as to whom they think will finish on top.

I’m just reminded, these same “experts” picked the Cubs and M’s to win last year. How did that work out?

When teams are as evenly matched as the Yankees and RS, I feel which ever team stays healthy will have the advantage.

    Let’s Go Yankees!

  55. BIG AL March 31st, 2011 at 4:49 am

With the weather conditions in NY, this could be a tough start for CC, who does not like pitching in cold weather.

I believe they get the game in, but, it will not be the best of conditions, unless there’s a last minute change in the weather forecast.

  56. BIG AL March 31st, 2011 at 4:59 am

From Pete Abe, on our old friend Alfredo Aceves -

Alfredo Aceves has been told he will start the season opener for Triple A Pawtucket on April 7 against Rochester. He was tremendous today down in Florida, pitching five perfect innings against Norfolk. He threw 61 pitches/44 strikes and struck out nine. Wow

    ——————————————————————–

Side note to Brian Cashman, when Aceves told you his back was fine, and his shoulder was completely healed, and he was ready to pitch, you should have listened. When Alfredo offered to take a full physical to prove his point, you should have sent him for one before making your decision.

  57. BIG AL March 31st, 2011 at 5:06 am

Some fun locally, the Winston-Salem Dash beat their parent club, the White Sox, 3-0 last night. The Dash are the Single A farm team of the Sox, the Sox played their regulars, and were out hit and out pitched by the farm team. Folks here in NC love their baseball, so it was a standing room only event.

    Ys Guy -

    Nah!

Got my finger on the pulse!!!!

I just wish I knew if Jair Jurrjens was going to pitch. Not going to know until rosters are locked in. :(

  82. Ys Guy March 31st, 2011 at 7:12 am

kate, a couple of them are weekly. this year i decided i wanted to try other formats, so i tried auction drafts, weekly points, and head to head by category.

i dont spend that much time on them, i usually go through them quickly in the am then again during the game at night and thats it.

ive been doing roto since the late 80′s and everybody wants me in thier league, so this year i obliged alot of people. im really looking forward to it.

(i have 2 more teams on yahoo!)

  83. Doreen March 31st, 2011 at 7:13 am

So, if a player comes off waivers after the rosters are locked for the week, you can’t make a claim until next week? Or do you put in a claim and it “lies in wait” for a week?

  84. GreenBeret7 March 31st, 2011 at 7:15 am

Jurrjens is supposed to be back around 6 April

  85. Doreen March 31st, 2011 at 7:18 am

    GB7 -

They’re having Jurrjens throw today and will make a determination after that. But it’ll be too late for me if they decide to DL him. I’m hoping he’s good to go, of course.

And even though we are opponents this week, good luck :)

  89. GreenBeret7 March 31st, 2011 at 7:20 am

Doreen, players are dropping like flies to Andruw Jones in ST. Almost all are oblique strains and a few shoulder issues.

  90. BIG AL March 31st, 2011 at 7:22 am

Good luck to you, too, Fran!

I’m really looking forward to this.

    GB7 -

Yup – the injury of the spring is the oblique!

And boy, it is so hard to tell if A. Jones is trying and just can’t do it, or not trying, when it comes to catching outfield flies. I am loathe to criticize players, but he sure leaves me scratching my head. I keep hoping he’s “saving it” for when it counts. :?

Dan Cunningham, heads groundskeeper, is on Good Day New York right now. He doesn’t seem to concerned but he said they’ll call it if they don’t feel it’s safe for the players.

  99. Doreen March 31st, 2011 at 7:42 am

  102. Ys Guy March 31st, 2011 at 7:47 am

i dont know if you guys heard the bill white interview with francessa yesterday, but at one point, bill was saying how willie mays raised him as a player in the giants organization, white said that he was kind of like a father to him.

but in-game as competitiors, white was yelling at his pitcher to knock mays down for swinging too hard at his pitches.

best of friends off the field, knock em down on it – that’s my motto!

  103. Ys Guy March 31st, 2011 at 7:50 am

  105. Bronx Jeers March 31st, 2011 at 7:52 am

Doreen, Jones had better be saving himself. I’d hate to have to put “Killer” on his trail.

  107. Ys Guy March 31st, 2011 at 7:58 am

enough of haley swindall. it was nice when she sang on steinbrenner day (both in YS and in tampa) and it’ll be nice to see her sing occasionally.

but this is opening day in new york city! you think they might do a little better. paul simon will be sitting right behind the dugout, hand him a mike!
