Ray – Good point. I’d actually have liked to see Gardner again tonight because he’s been so close to getting a hit but it just hasn’t worked out yet. Then again, a day off could be just what he needs. I just hate Andruw ‘I incorrectly spell my name’ Jones.
LGY – makes sense. In my head it seemed more likely they would leave granderson at 7 and martin 9, with jones between them… Accomplishes the same thing and possibly gets Granderson an extra AB over Martin. Nitpicking of course What wonderful problems to have.
I would have thought that with CC going, they might give Molina a start, and rest Russell the Muscle. Might be a combination of Martin feeling good, and Joe not totally trusting Molina. I’d think at some point they’ve got to give Martin a rest, though.
Not a good sign for the Cubs. Cashner was removed in the 6th inning. Trainer went out. Doesn’t look like blisters. They didn’t look at his hand. Arm seemed to hang rather limp walking to dugout.
I believe wear and tear on a catcher is more cumulative than immediate.
A young-ish catcher in good shape in early April could probably catch weeks in a row without any noticeable effects. It’s the long-term you are guarding against.
I suspect the Yankees will ride Martin fairly hard until Cervelli comes back and then give him (Cervelli) plenty of PT for a while to give Martin some rest and recharge the batteries.
Martin isn’t going to fall over dead if he plays 5 games in a row.
I had it mostly right, top 6, Jones and Martin playing, just the bottom 3 in a different order. I guess Joe is not fully buying Granderson’s success vs lefties quite yet.
Martin is fresh, dont see a problem with him playing 6-7 games in a row. He most definitely will get a breather on Thursday, and I would bet Posada gets a breather tomorrow with A-Rod DHing and Chavez at 3B.
We are used to having a broken down catcher needing breathers. Martin isnt broken down…yet.
The questions about Martin have nothing to do with his conditioning. It has everything to do with the knee and hip injuries that plagued him the last couple of years.
Not sure Girardi is really going to want to push it by riding Martin so hard the first month.
Didn’t quite a few people here freak out a week ago because Russell Martin could only catch a few games a week and Molina was going to cost the Yankeesa bunch of games?
No surprise….
the annual focus on the Yankees perceived weaknesses in Spring Traning was so far, mostly for naught.
If you want to get technical, the knee and hip certainly plagued him last season. And he didn’t start playing behind the plate until a week or 10 days after the ST games started.
It’s not meant to be a knock on him at all. Just that it would be a good idea to make sure his knee and hip can handle playing that often.
Much like how Girardi handled A-Rod in 2009 and 2010.
“The questions about Martin have nothing to do with his conditioning. It has everything to do with the knee and hip injuries that plagued him the last couple of years.”

It’s a fair concern.. but I haven’t seen anything to suggest that Martin isn’t at or closeto 100% – fortunately.

I’d just like to say that some of the things we argue about or even worse really should be put in perspective. On my way home from the library during my lunch hour from work, I was nearly killed in a car accident. This truck came out of the parking lot he was in like a bat out of hell, crossed a lane of traffic and smashed into my car. Thank heavens for seatbelts and for the airbag; I emerged with a few scrapes and a bruised shin – no broken bones, no serious injuries that I can tell. I know that even a “love tap” from another car can lead to back problems, so I’m probably going to go for x-rays. My first thought right after it happened was that I was lucky to be alive. Everything I always worry about – what’s wrong with Phil, will we hit with runners in scoring position, or anything else that just pops up with me because I worry about everything really means very little at this point. For those who don’t wear seat belts, please do so.
“How long a toss would it take for Javvy Vasquez to get his velocity back? This is a math quiz….”
If Javier Vasquez’s fastball is moving towards homeplate at 88mph, and Kevin Youkilis bat is moving through the strike zone at 107 MPG, how long will it take the fans at Yankee Stadium to begin booing Vasquez?
A.) Before Brett Gardner cranes his head backwards watching the ball sail into the upper deck.
B.) Before Youkilis rounds 1st base.
C.) They were already booing before he threw the pitch.
Tampa, thank you…….I didn’t have an herky jerky movements, so my neck should be ok, but I believe I will be quite sore for a few days. I just want my back to be ok………….everything else is minor. It’s a bit achy right now – I have a date with Aleve.

Mike, I’ve done that… though of course I have a hard time not checking my phone to see every pitch live. But it’s nice to watch in HD after with no commercial breaks.
Bets–sometimes people in car crashes get TMJ as a result. Blake could probably tell you more about it…but my wife got it a long time ago when she didn’t think she was in such a big crash. Best to make sure now and get damages covered rather than suffer pain later.
Erin, Stuckey, Aldo, Boj, BD – thank you! Had that guy been in a car and not a 4 wheeler, I think the same thing still would have happened- maybe less damage to my car, but I couldn’t avoid it. There are just really lousy drivers out there- as if getting to a place 1 second earlier or 1 minute will make a difference. I’ve been guilty of going too fast at times or weaving in and out of lanes because I didn’t want to wait behind a slow car, but not anymore. As the tow truck driver said, too many people on the road are all about competition and beating the guy in the other car.
Patrick, thanks! Drinking more probably would not only dull the pain but make me a lot happier, lol….. Sounds good to me!
Bojo, I definitely want to get x-rays – JUST to be sure; you’re right – sometimes the pain, wherever it is, doesn’t really occur until after the shock has worn off. TMJ – that’s painful. Is your wife ok? Did that happen to Blake?
I’ve lost a couple of friends in cara accidents. One lovely lady in my grad school was taking her kids home and was killed when blindsided by a car thief. Another to a drunk driver, and another to icy conditions. The real world makes these arguments seem small and petty.
Nick in SF April 5th, 2011 at 5:07 pm
Betsy, I’m glad you’re ok. I was once broadsided by a drunk driver who ran a red light. I never saw it coming; I woke up briefly in the ambulance.
————————-
Nick in SF, does that mean you’ve really been unconscious since then except for that brief moment?
If the driver was distracted, it was probably a Redsock fan who was repeating the mantra “the 1998 Yankees won 114 games and started 0-3 right? I am not panicking at all.”
Thanks for the info on Banuelos, SJ. There wasn’t a reason given. hopefully, as you say, nothing serious. I wonder if Pilittere is in shape to play, will Molina be one game and out behind the plate. Not a ton of talent with the bat, but decent defense. He’s been around forever as a Yankee farm hand, and now back after signing on with ‘Zona.

___________
That would explain A LOT…
Wow Betsy thank God you’re okay and thank God for airbags! You are so right about getting fast perspective on what’s important in life and what’s really worthy your worry – and whether or not Phil Hughes works out his cutter is really very low on the list.
Celebrate the rest of this day and those around you that you love. That’s the important thing about today.
If the Yankees win or lose, baseball will be here tomorrow and the day after and the day after.
Baseball is always a wonderful marathon, actually giving fans permission to breathe if they so chose!
Interesting article on how pitchers, in this case Aroldis Chapman, achieves velocity of up to 105mph.
Ignore the fact that it was written by a former Sux pitcher!!
Nick, are you kidding? That’s awful – I have no tolerance for drunk driving. I remember taking a vacation from this blog after Joba got arrested because I was pretty angry. If you win the bet, what’s your reward?
Patrick, not really. The part of the car where the driver’s side headlight is is gone – you can see inside the car, lol., The bumper was ripped off as well………but the car started, so the engine appears to be ok. There’s also a dent by the rear passenger side door.
Mike, they were Sikhs’, lol – not sure if they were baseball fans. They were pulling out of a Sikhe temple and just – wham. Unfortunately, bad driving is not limited to Mets fans.
I posted a link earlier today to an old 1950s TV tribute to Lou Gehrig that I think you would love. Has a lot of actual Lou Gehrig video. He was and remains my all-time favorite Yankee.
MG, thanks. How awful – I’m so sorry. I won’t let anyone get in my car without putting on a seat belt. I don’t get my sister- she thinks being in the back seat protects her from the force of being thrown during an accident. It doesn’t.
Ray and Sallie, thanks! Bojo, maybe the accident knocked some sense into me, lol. Granted, I didn’t hit my head, but still, lol. What awful stories – really depressing. You have to be so careful on the road and even then you never know. You wake up in the morning assuming your day will be like every other – and wham, it’s not. It just takes a split second for everything to change.
Trisha, I’m going to try and remember what I wrote today – though I’m not sure I will succeed, lol.
Patrick, no drinking and driving, but maybe drinking and posting!
“If the driver was distracted, it was probably a Redsock fan who was repeating the mantra ‘the 1998 Yankees won 114 games and started 0-3 right? I am not panicking at all.’?
LMAO, and that’s not so much fun with bronchitis!!
I have a classic trisha story. I was hit by a car once (car hits body) and I ended up breaking both bones in the bottom of my left leg, totally clean breaks. I’m pretty tough when it comes to pain, but that crossed my eyes! I was in a cast of one kind of another for almost a year. However, my first question to the doctor was whether or not I would ever walk again. When he said yes I was good to go. I considered ithe rest of it to be an adventure. Also, if that hadn’t happened to me today I might have a PhD instead of a JD because I was taking course toward a PhD at the time. Best thing that could have happened because my heart wasn’t in the program and in my heart of hearts I wanted to be an attorney.
Patrick, ops -thanks! I’m not sure – the car is with the mechanic now. It’s a 2004 Honda Accord, so it’s a good car. The other driver’s insurance is going to pay for this – I’ll make sure of it, lol, as it was so clearly their fault. I’m going to be very nervous driving a rental, that’s for sure.
Kate, thanks! It was scary – it happened so fast and yet went so slowly -if that makes any sense. You see it happening in front of you, but there’s not much you can do. I really feel extremely fortunate to be alive.
Bojo, and the doctor would say Yes and then I would say “that’s good, because I could never play it before”, lol.
Patrick, thanks. I’m going to shockingly think positive; I mean, what good will it do to worry? If I have to get a new car, I will be pretty livid, but we’ll see. Other cars have undoubtedly sustained much more damage than mine did, but of course, it really matters where the damage was sustained……so many little parts to consider, you know?
Bets–It couldn’t hurt to consider getting another car before they go ahead with repairs. I presume the resale value of a damaged car will go dwon, so remember that financial loss when thinking about it.
I might have a PhD instead of a JD because I was taking course toward a PhD at the time. Best thing that could have happened because my heart wasn’t in the program and in my heart of hearts I wanted to be an attorney.

PJ Pilittere has resigned with Yanks and assigned to Scranton.

That’s good news about P.J. Maybe a swap with Molina is in order ?
———————————————————————————————————————-
Always liked Pilittere. he worked really well with the young pitchers, but, especially Montero and Romine. Would like to see him get his cup of coffee and then stay on in coaching.
BD — Be careful with the “at bat” app. It sometimes decides to turn the volume on at inopportune times. I decided in ’09 not to miss game 1 with the Twins but also not to miss my night class. Needless to say my professor wasn’t as pleased to hear Jeter’s homerun as I was.

Nitpick Alert: I don’t know how I feel about the bottom of our order with Martin behind Posada.. I think I’d rather have Jones there.
I thought Posada might get a rest & Chavez might play at 3B with ARod as DH. I was wrong!

I don’t understand the order of the bottom 3 at all…

———————————————————————————————
This is the biggest advantage of not having Jorge catch.
His hot bat stays in the line-up. I bet you if you asked him he’d say he’s up for 162 games this season.
are they trying to run Russell Martin into the ground?
Jeter batting leadoff. And Granderson batting last.
a captain/team player. lol
Yes!
Questioning the line-up.
Almost guarantees 7 or 8 runs…
Ray – Good point. I’d actually have liked to see Gardner again tonight because he’s been so close to getting a hit but it just hasn’t worked out yet. Then again, a day off could be just what he needs. I just hate Andruw ‘I incorrectly spell my name’ Jones.
Martin has been swinging the bat well….breaks up the righty Lefty.
Hope Andrew begins the process of proving me wrong today.
“I don’t understand the order of the bottom 3 at all…”
—————-
Both Jones and Jeter hit lefties well, so Granderson is sandwiched between them.
“are they trying to run Russell Martin into the ground?”
——————
This will be his 4th game in a row. Not a big deal for a 28 year old catcher.
He will get tomorrow night off and Nick will have 25 bucks in his pocket.
LGY – makes sense. In my head it seemed more likely they would leave granderson at 7 and martin 9, with jones between them… Accomplishes the same thing and possibly gets Granderson an extra AB over Martin. Nitpicking of course
What wonderful problems to have.
Thought Martin might get the day off today with CC on the mound….guess they want to give him tomorrow when the rest of the regulars are in there.
Makes sense to schedule rest for Martin against RH pitching, the lineup is a bit weaker against lefties already.
I believe wear and tear on a catcher is more cumulative than immediate.

If you rested Martin tonight you would have to do it on Thursday as well, because Joe doesn’t like playing his catchers day game after a night game.
Bet 1 or 2 regulars get the day game off Thursday so they get a breather before the Boston series.
I think Girardi is starting Martin to try to at least split the series tonight. If we win tonight, Molina will start tomorrow night I’d bet.
As for Jorge, his bat speed looks to be one of the main beneficiaries of DH’ing. Keep him in there while he’s hot.
Rain is now off the coast. May still be some sprinkles
GreenBeret7 April 5th, 2011 at 3:54 pm
Oh no!
May be precautionary, Ray, but, looks more than that.
Report on Cashner is tightness in pitching shoulder.
There will be no rain during the game at all. Or so I’m thinking/hoping.
Hopefully Jeter gets some good fortune tonight.
Go Yankees!

plagued him the last couple of years.
This is patently false, do not base your assumptions of Martins health on this.
Martin hurt his hip last spring, which most likely led to the knee problem that required him to have surgery.
He does not have a history of being injured.
Granderson batting last to add speed on base , helping to minimize the chance the next batter-Jeter- hits into DP.
Molina will probably catch tomorrow when Garcia pitches.
should be an interesting game in Colorado tonight with Kershaw pitching for the Dodgers against Chacin.
GB7 – very much looking forward to that, hope the ump is stretching his “K” arm.
Hopefully, Granderson gets on base a few times and runs wild.

Stuckey–the correct answer to “How long a toss would it take for Javvy Vasquez to get his velocity back? This is a math quiz….” is Florida to Cuba
“How long a toss would it take for Javvy Vasquez to get his velocity back? ”
a 110-120 yard throw would do it.
not going to happen.
Betsy, I’m glad you’re ok. I was once broadsided by a drunk driver who ran a red light. I never saw it coming; I woke up briefly in the ambulance.
But I have a wager on how many wins Phil gets, so I reserve the right to be happy with what’s right with Phil ASAP.
Betsy,
Was your car totaled?
Betsy, glad you’re ok! Was he a Mets fan?
Betsy-
Thank goodness you’re OK.
Betsy, glad you’re OK, I lost a close relative at age 35 about 25 years due to a traffic accident in a similar manner, glad you had the seat belt on.
Bojy, definitely agree with something you said earlier.
The best off season acquisition WAS Larry Rothschild!!!!!
Betsy April 5th, 2011 at 4:58 pm
I am glad you are okay Betsy! I hope you are even after further inspection! Thanks for your words!
Bestsy, I am glad you are ok. Tonight’s Yankee win is for you.
I’ve lost a couple of friends in cara accidents. One lovely lady in my grad school was taking her kids home and was killed when blindsided by a car thief. Another to a drunk driver, and another to icy conditions. The real world makes these arguments seem small and petty.
And you still have no clue about Hughes.

Nick in SF, does that mean you’ve really been unconscious since then except for that brief moment?
It was very painful for my wife, but we saw the best in the world in NYC…Dr Harold Gelb.
I think Blake is a dentist (right?) and would know about the issue and probably explain it better than I could.

Woohoo! Just don’t drive afterwards, although I’m sure that’s the last thing I need to tell you at this point
Bojo, shouldn’t that be Florida to New Orleans?
If you want any advice on getting a new car, I think Doreen will be around soon.
“I’ve lost a couple of friends in cara accidents”
There’s no good way to go, but I would choose an Irene Cara accident. What a feeling!

Could be…could be.

Actually Cuba to FL, but the long way around! LOL!
Ignore the fact that it was written by a former Sux pitcher!!
http://www.pitching.com/blog/p.....f-105-mph/
Well, my wife has been reminding me a lot today that UCOnn won something last night. I am trying to ignore the details about her undergrad school.
Yikes Betsy, glad to hear you are OK. That must have been so scary.
“If you win the bet, what’s your reward?”
The bet is with my sportsbook, so I win money.
If I lose they think they’re getting my kidney, but the joke’s on them.
Hey Trishy–
I posted a link earlier today to an old 1950s TV tribute to Lou Gehrig that I think you would love. Has a lot of actual Lou Gehrig video. He was and remains my all-time favorite Yankee.
I had never seen it before.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....ure=fvwrel
Check out the final few minutes for some of the actual farewell speech that is rarely heard.

______________
Isn’t it well preserved?
Betsy,
Totaled doesn’t necessarily mean the car won’t start. It means that the cost of repairing the car would be more than the car’s worth.
Yankee Trader thank you!
If I lose they think they’re getting my kidney, but the joke’s on them.

Nick-
Have you already donated a kidney??

Oh that is good! You’re the best.
The silver lining found in every cloud.
“Donated” isn’t exactly the right word…
It’s a 2004 Honda Accord, so it’s a good car.
—
That is a good car, hopefully you have no problems with getting it fixed.
And here I thought you would ask the doctor if you would be able to play the violin after the leg healed…
Kate, thanks! It was scary – it happened so fast and yet went so slowly -if that makes any sense. You see it happening in front of you, but there’s not much you can do. I really feel extremely fortunate to be alive.
Betsy April 5th, 2011 at 5:20 pm
If anything happened to you, we would truly miss you! So drive carefully & keep us informed on your well being!

Banuelos will miss first turn through rotation for family issues.
PJ Pilittere has resigned with Yanks and assigned to Scranton.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That’s good news about P.J. Maybe a swap with Molina is in order ?
“Trisha, I?m going to try and remember what I wrote today ? though I?m not sure I will succeed, lol.”
Bets, I will try to remind you but I also understand that it’s human nature to have the urgency fade with the passage of time.
Bojo, and the doctor would say Yes and then I would say “that’s good, because I could never play it before”, lol.
Patrick, thanks. I’m going to shockingly think positive; I mean, what good will it do to worry? If I have to get a new car, I will be pretty livid, but we’ll see. Other cars have undoubtedly sustained much more damage than mine did, but of course, it really matters where the damage was sustained……so many little parts to consider, you know?
Aww, Ray, that’s so sweet. Thanks! I’m going to go up to my room and rest a bit in a few………
Exactly–I knew you would get it!
Bets–It couldn’t hurt to consider getting another car before they go ahead with repairs. I presume the resale value of a damaged car will go dwon, so remember that financial loss when thinking about it.
I just called CC and told him about you, Betsy and he promised a good outing. I’m sooooo sorry for your bad luck today but thank God you are alright.
Betsy,
Just trying to catch up. I am so glad that you’re ok.
I might have a PhD instead of a JD because I was taking course toward a PhD at the time. Best thing that could have happened because my heart wasn’t in the program and in my heart of hearts I wanted to be an attorney.
You wanted a degree in Johnny Damon? You’d better have this deleted or Erica’s gonna be all over you like white on rice.
Not to happy with the order of the lineup but I do like the fact that its Gardner who is sitting and not the Grandy man
It’sfunny how all these games with the Twins at YS seem to be very close…I guess we might be in for another close one tonight.
Always liked Pilittere. he worked really well with the young pitchers, but, especially Montero and Romine. Would like to see him get his cup of coffee and then stay on in coaching.
BD — Be careful with the “at bat” app. It sometimes decides to turn the volume on at inopportune times. I decided in ’09 not to miss game 1 with the Twins but also not to miss my night class. Needless to say my professor wasn’t as pleased to hear Jeter’s homerun as I was.
Bojo, but I would never sell my car- she’s already named, lol
Jack, thank you! CC always has his fans bests interests at heart – that’s why he rarely throws a bad game!
Fran, thanks a lot – I appreciate everyone’s comments.
Bojo, but I would never sell my car- she’s already named, lol
Well–why didn’t you say so?
I think the RSox have been on LoHud! They have Crawford batting 2nd & Peds 3rd.
Socksfan mantra #2:
“So long as we make the playoffs, we don’t need 100 wins.”
(this is the previous mantra were taken from comments on an mlb.com article about the Redsocks start)
If the sox lost 15 in a row, I wonder if Tito would be fired…
I think Ray’s trying to tell us something. What is it, Ray? Trouble in the new post???
Ledger_Yankees Star Ledger
Just talked to one AL pitcher who says the juiced ball theory wouldn’t be an issue if guys stopped throwing the ball down the middle.
Is lohud blog up for tonight’s game?
