Soriano says sorry
Brian Heyman here again today at Yankee Stadium.
Rafael Soriano stood at his locker and apologized to the media for not speaking after he did the heavy lifting in blowing CC Sabathia’s masterpiece in the eighth inning. He said he was just upset about what had just happened and didn’t want to speak. His agent, Scott Boras, told him that he needs to face reporters no matter what happens. Joe Girardi talked to him as well.
Girardi was peppered with questions about his bullpen moves in the eighth and ninth. I’ll tell you, none of them really seemed out of the ordinary to me. The only thing that went wrong was they didn’t work. Soriano said he was having problems with balance, so he walked three in that inning, matching a career high. As far as his role, Soriano said he’ll pitch any inning that Girardi wants.
Derek Jeter isn’t in the lineup, but Girardi said nothing is wrong, just giving him a rest. Russell Martin is getting to sit at the start as well. And A-Rod is the DH. Eric Chavez is playing third.
Mark Teixeira donated $1 million today to help Harlem RBI and its partner, DREAM Charter School, build a charter school facility, among other things in East Harlem. Fans can donate $10 at www.dreamteam25.org or text “RBI” to 50555.

I wonder if Soriano had to sit in timeout when he got back to the stadium. Hopefully they can all just move on from this.
JackCurryYES Rangers are 6-0 after beating Felix Hernandez and the Mariners today. Best start since 1996.
I figured Boras would set him straight…
Wow Soria blown save. Of course he mixed a walk in the meltdown.
Damn Walks.
Unreal. two outs no one on and a 3 run lead. Gone
Jason Kubel is the guy to look out for tonight.
In his career vs Garcia: 14 abs, .636 AVG, 1.805 OPS
Last year vs Garcia: 8 abs, .750 AVG, 2.068 OPS
You can stuff your sorries in a sack, mister.
(What does that even mean?)
Soriano will be forced to sit in a room with Jon Heyman as punishment.

very nice
“He’ll have to change his historical ways, however, as current Twins hitters have a career .931 OPS against him.”
————–
Wave,
He went 7 innings, 2 runs two times vs Minny last year.
Lebron entered into a marketing deal with Fenway Sports/LRMR that gives him and Maverick Carter a small equity stake in Liverpool FC.
Does that make him a Sox fan now?
Not the smartest investment.
Boras as the voice of reason… that’s different.
Kubel has been a pest lately a lot for the Yankees.
A nice 15 to 2 drubbing would be just what the Doctor orders for an early season bad loss like last night. We shall see…
“Jason Kubel is the guy to look out for tonight.
In his career vs Garcia: 14 abs, .636 AVG, 1.805 OPS”
Joe Mauer, career 1.260 OPS vs Garcia, last season 6 for 10, 1 HR, 3 2B
Delmon Young, career 1.364 OPS vs Garcia, last season 1 HR and 1 2B
Matt Thornton blows the save.
Wave,
Mauer is not in the lineup.
Crazy game in Kaufmann. I love this DirecTv preview of MLB Extra Innings. Nice to get an early feel of what these other teams look like.
eboland11 Keith Olbermann outside Twins dugout snapping pictures. Wonder what kind of BS story he’s trying to create now.
“He went 7 innings, 2 runs two times vs Minny last year.”
And he went 2.1 innings with 6 earned runs once. Overall, 1-3 vs Minny last year.
“Cue line up hysteria……………………………”
“Girardi was peppered with questions about his bullpen moves in the eighth and ninth. I’ll tell you, none of them really seemed out of the ordinary to me. The only thing that went wrong was they didn’t work. ”
Aha!
I’m tempted to go with the jerkface version of events, and that is that the problem wasn’t putting Soriano in, but not taking him out quickly enough.
But the reason I can’t go that far is this. I think it is important for a manager to show confidence in his heavy hitters and also to see what they do in different situations.
But it’s over and all is well in the Bronx. Not so much in beantown. What fun it is to listen to WEEI. I found errands to do that I really didn’t need to do just so I could continue riding around and listening. I was smiling ear to ear and wanted to say to other drivers “WEEI. Ya gotta listen!”
I thought I heard last night that the only team to start out 0-4 and still go to the world series/winthe world series (?) was a KC team. Unless that’s when the Sux were at 0-3. Oh well. Not gonna matter because they’re not going to make it to the world series anyway.
I predict that after tonight they will be 0-5. Oh what fun!
“Mauer is not in the lineup.”
Glad to hear that. I hope the Twins make that a common practice when playing the Yanks.
Wins, wave? Really?
“I’m tempted to go with the jerkface version of events, and that is that the problem wasn’t putting Soriano in, but not taking him out quickly enough.”
As far as I’m concerned that’s after the fact thinking.
I’ve got both Joakim Soria and Matt Thorton on my fantasy team. They both just shat the bed. Ugh.
“Wins, wave? Really?”
I know JF, it’s so 20th Century of me.
“And he went 2.1 innings with 6 earned runs once. Overall, 1-3 vs Minny last year.”
——————-
3 out of 4 starts were good and probably Ws with this offense behind him.
Bleacher Creatures I wonder what they are going to come up with for Chavez in the Roll Call..

I still don’t like him and you can’t make me. So there.

CB was saying it while Soriano was still pitching

How about during the fact thinking? Nevermind that I wanted D-Rob to start the 8th before Soriano came in. It was obvious Soriano had nothing. Besides CB pointing out his mechanical issues, a guy who has impeccable command looked like butts.

Eric Chavez?
jerkface – <– figured i'd leave my response back a page.

I was just about to ask what this discussion was really about because I wasn’t really sure where we were going with it.
Its a good thing that you cant lose fantasy points for poor baserunning and errors.
“CB was saying it while Soriano was still pitching”
CB has poured over hours of film I guess. He certainly didn’t pick it up watching So in spring training, not enough innings for that. I need the tapes of all So’s games last year to see if his mechanics were ever off but he pitched OK anyway. CB’s already done that so no need for me to spend my time, I’ll just log in during the game. Maybe Rothschild and Girardi should do that as well…
Jerkface wanted D-Rob in before the inning started.
A couple of people did.
I was one of them.

Funny how Soriano said he wasn’t mechanically right today though huh?
Ok, well it can’t happen again. I don’t care what Soriano is like in the clubhouse, but he has to take responsibility for his failures
“Jerkface wanted D-Rob in before the inning started.

That’s OK, I have no problem with that. I was surprised to see So coming in as well.
Wave,
CB picked up on it pretty quickly that Soriano’s mechanics were off…
“Funny how Soriano said he wasn’t mechanically right today though huh?”
That’s not really the point, the question is does he usually pitch well when his mechanics are in fact off?
Isn’t that the pitching coach’s job to spot the mechanical problems? I’d put that more on Rothschild than Girardi.
ID I responded to you, I’m not sure what your point about 3run vs 4run has to do with what my point is.
“Isn’t that the pitching coach’s job to spot the mechanical problems? I’d put that more on Rothschild than Girardi.”
That, I would agree with.
I would get on Joe for staying with him too long (based on the fact that he was sucking), but I can’t get on him for not spotting out-of-whack mechanics. That’s what a pitching coach is for. That’s his area of work.
meanwhile in Tampa Damon and Manny look very old at the plate…..wonder how that experiment will play out this summer….Manny will go home by July if he’s still struggling
If we have to blame Girardi for something, blame him for not bringing in Mo to face Mauer. Not that any manager would have done that in an early April game.
I don’t blame him for sticking with So once he brought him into the game. Even if his mechanics were off, he might have corrected them, he might have gotten the outs anyway, and pulling him sends the wrong signal.
I agree that Joe has lost some faith in Robertson. I think he’s good, not great, but if you can’t pitch him with a 4 run lead, then he’s nothing but a longman.
Joe said with Francesca that he had no idea what Soriano meant by his balance being off and that he’d have to ask him……….can’t Joe BS better than that?
Why would Joe not trust D-Rob? He started out slow last season I know but I thought he was one of the more consistent BP guys.
Time to get over it. All Soriano needs to do is listen to the words of wisdom from Mariano.
“Why would Joe not trust D-Rob? He started out slow last season I know but I thought he was one of the more consistent BP guys.”
Too many walks. Also one of those guys that seems to do better in higher leverage situations.
Jesus….people are still whining about last night? It happens. Soria just blew a 3 run lead by giving up 4 runs with all baserunners getting on with 2 outs.
I’m not holding my breath, but I’m hoping Molina goes at least 1-4 just to shut up the LoHud cynics!
Just one hit Gustavo… just one!!
Oh, and decent D too.

How about an inside the park grand slam?
Team Gus!

I met Scott Allen, the guy we got in the Juan Miranda trade. He is definitely going to be in Tampa this year. Do you know if he is a reliever or SP? I didnt think to ask. Also, I am going to try my best to think of some excuse to get out of class so I can go to Lakeland to see Brett Marshall pitch tomorrow night. Cant believe minor league baseball starts tomorrow night.
Erin April 6th, 2011 at 4:37 pm
Ledger_Yankees My opinion: I think Girardi did the right thing bringing Soriano in. The idea of the “save” situation is so arbitrary and stupid.
—
If you can’t trust any reliever aside from Joba/Soriano/Rivera with a four run lead, then the rest are all basically mop up men, and those three guys are going to pitch *a lot* of innings.
GB7,
I’ll let Nick in SF come up with some odds on that one…
TY. not sure about Allen. He was a reliever in ’09 and a starter last year. I would assume that he starts, but, seems that control is an issue. Hoping that Romanski makes the rotation
What will Girardi do if this lineup plays small ball gets 18-20 hits, steals bases, gets runners home from 2nd and 3rd and scores big time, with Granderson in the 2 hole??

Bat jeter 8th? But what if those 18-20 hits are all for XBH? What then?

I’d settle for a little league home run. Bloop single and everyone throws the ball away.
If your team has 18 hits, they aren’t playing small ball
Face-
What if Eduardo Nunez goes 4-4, plays gold glove defense?? lol
Most important news of the day is that the subway race is back!
Its a crying shame Joe Girardi didn’t get the LoHud whiners group approval for tonights line-up.
Aside from the C, how can you think this is a big drop-off for the offense.
If the Yankees can’t win with this line-up, then we’ll see a very long season, we’ve got plenty of power still in the game.
Let’s go Yankees!!!
GB
I just looked up the post on RAB from a few weeks ago and they think he will be in the rotation. I hope Romanski is in the rotation as well since Hall and Banuelos are in Trenton now that would leave us with no lefties that I can think of and lefties are my favorites.
If Soriano was having trouble with his balance, maybe he caught the inner ear infection AJ had?
I can’t speak to the balance issue that Soriano mentioned, but what I noticed last night was that he seemed to be in an awful rush to deliver the pitch…..

It was too cold. DL him until june.
It will be interesting to see how the Yankees do next week against the Orioles, facing pitchers they likely have seen very little of or not at all with Matusz and Guthrie out. Arrieta, Britton, Tillman-have they faced them before?
Soriano pitched in Seattle (dome), Atlanta (mild), and Tampa (Dome).
Not surprising that he struggled in the cold, he;s not used to it
Just give him some long johns and a couple shots of bourbon and he’ll be fine.
I know it is early days, but if I were the Rangers and their fans I would be saying “Cliff who?”
Not surprising that he struggled in the cold, he;s not used to it
–
He didn’t even travel to other cities during April while in Seattle, Atlanta, and Tampa. Stayed in a climate control bubble.
Tommorrow is a big day for hundreds of thousands of Yankee fans. We’ll find out if the suits running the Yankees care enough about their fans to come to an agreement with DirecTV or if they are willing to make YES unavaialble. Should be interesting. Glad to see DTV’s stock fall a dollar/share since Monday. The only thing either side is loyal to is the almighty dollar.
Betsy,
How are you feeling? Hope all is well.
Just give him some long johns and a couple shots of bourbon and he’ll be fine.
—————————————————–
Why didn’t they just pitch Colon? With the extra weight he’s carrying he should have no problem pitching in cold windy conditions!
He only has to answer to his team and manager. At any rate he addressed the media, and pledged not to blow off the writers again. That should be enough. Of course it’s not…
perhaps Robbie will lend Soriano his ninja mask next time
RMS, I’m feeling fine, thanks! Remarkably, I feel just a bit stiff around my neck and shoulders, but not even too bad – and that’s it for now at least, lol. I took advil and wore a deep heating patch (and walked around with an aroma of ben gay hovering around me,lol ) today. Tonight, a nice bath will help………I just got my rental car from Enterprise – a Mazda.
It was too cold. DL him until june

Just send him to Scranton.
“I can’t speak to the balance issue that Soriano mentioned, but what I noticed last night was that he seemed to be

Previous two games show that the Twins are a more complete team than the Yankees .
Would not be surprised if the Twins end up with a much better record than the Yankees by the end of the season .
Betsy-
Glad you’re feeling better. Maybe a NYY 10-0 lead after 2 tonight will help!!!
Betsy
what did they have to say about your car?
Betsy
Glad you are better.
Mazda is a pretty good car.
The Twins’ play have
won me over .
Go Twins !
Yankee Trader, that would be a huge help, lol.
Kate, our family mechanic (that really doesn’t sound right, but he’s a guy we’ve gone to for years) said that my car should be fixable and, once fixed, be as good as new. The adjuster is coming tomorrow.
Want to hear something freaky? I had the driver’s information with me at work today and when I looked at it (had to give some info to the adjuster), I noticed that he was born on my birthday, lol – September 24th. I mean, are you kidding me, lol? Not the same year, but still.
RMS, thanks!
LOL Everytime I type your name, I keep thinking of the Titanic, because her official name was RMS Titanic…….
Was trying to give you the same end date too.
Cash is such a card…..
PeterBotte Cashman said he and Randy Levine called Boras about Soriano not speaking with media to “head it off.”
PeterBotte Cashman also joked: “As I’ve learned, some days its best not to talk..Maybe I’ve ‘abused’ my platform of talking to the press.”
Cash may be joking, but I wouldn’t mind if he meant that
that is good news about your car Betsy
BryanHoch Ladies and gentlemen, now presenting the Yankee Stadium tarpaulin!
Drive 4-6 – wishing you the best. By the way – haven’t changed the handle, yet, have you….
“LOL Everytime I type your name, I keep thinking of the Titanic, because her official name was RMS Titanic…….”
I use RMS because those are my initials. Hopefully I won’t wind up like the Titanic. LOL
“Jesus….people are still whining about last night? It happens.”
Yeah, it happens, lol!
Let’s see how many times the Yanks rally from four runs down with two outs in the 8th inning. But it doesn’t happen once this season.
Kate, yes very – I love my car, lol.
RMS, I would hope not, but it may pay to buy iceberg insurance
Betsy
we have 3 Hondas. I have an Accord sedan. My son has my old Accord wagon, which they don’t make anymore. It was my favorite car, he loves it too.
Kate, Honda must love you, lol. I have a sedan – in blue, my favorite color. It’s a really good, solid car – it’s going to be weird driving another one, lol
Bets–My wife is a Libra too (sept 30). Explains why I enjoy your attitude.

My old Accord wagon was one of my favorite cars too.
Weather radar looks pretty bleak. Rain moving due East from Youngstown Ohio is solid.
Betsy….Trauma usually will manifest itself is a few days…..Epsom salt bath is a wonder cure for stiffness…..Every locker room in the country have cases of the stuff….
Bojo, we’re the best! LOL actually, I am not into signs at ALL, but I do tend to weigh everything out as if it’s a life and death decision, so the scales represent me quite well. Plus, my birthstone is a sapphire- lucky me!
I drive a ’97 honda wagon. I bought it for a buck 10 years ago. Damn thing will not die.
Pat M, thanks for the tip – I’ll try and pick some up tomorrow. I have a hospital near my home and near my office, so the good thing is that if I feel the tiniest drop of pain, I plan on making a beeline to the ER
Hiya LI Joe!
Hope all is well and you are enjoying the season so far. Tough loss last night but no team goes through a season without a few of them. Even the World Champion Red Sox! The water cooler talk today here in MA is really getting hilarious. RSN has formed a line are ready to jump off the Tobin Bridge. Fans have apoplectic rage over their catcher, pitching coach and manager. I must say I’m enjoying it.
Anyone know the forecast, likelihood of getting the game in?
Rainout probably isnt good for NY. Playing two tomorrow before heading to that dump that is Fenway is not the best. Oh well
“The water cooler talk today here in MA is really getting hilarious. RSN has formed a line are ready to jump off the Tobin Bridge. Fans have apoplectic rage over their catcher, pitching coach and manager. I must say I’m enjoying it.”
Drive, I have bronchitis and drove around today in spite of it just to listen to WEEI on the radio (plus I had cabin fever so wanted to be out.) I found errands to do just so I could drive around and listen to the callers. What joy!
Tom, I drive a 1997 Acura Integra. Made by Honda so that probably explains why it’s still running well. I paid quite a few bucks for it when I bought it but I intend to drive it until it decides to stop running. I love it. I think it’s a good looking little car, plus it’s a 5 speed and has a moon roof. That’s all I need.
Hi Drive – sounds like you’re enjoying yourself, lol.
We’re ok here, everyone’s well, thanks. Hope the same for you.
Here’s hoping they get the game in, but only if it results in a big W.
This is the Twins only trip to the Stadium this year. The AL will do everything possible to get the games in.
It’s funny. I actually got one guy today to calm down by just explaining to him that the Sox problem is the unrealistic expectations that was hyped. Lester won’t have as bad a start all season. Bucholz is another they dont have to really worry about. But the rest of that staff just isn’t very good. Period. By the end of our conversation he was agreeing with me hahaha

You could have bought 2 Yankee tickets for that dollar. What were you thinking man.

i downsized to a smaller vehicle so you have a harder time hitting me with your blunderbuss.
im driving a honda fit now.
my only complaint is that when i go around corners fast i have to lean in to the corner so it won’t tip over.
Geez hope this think with Derek doesn’t become a daily distraction. Not good for the team or Jeter to have the daily cycle dominated with discussions about the SS. Derek starts hitting hopefully and it will stop.
Betsy.
My son has a 2003 Honda Accord we bought for him last year, and I drive a Honda Accord in AZ.
So sorry you have aches and pains, but honestly that is to be expected. I am surprised you went to work today.
Trisha,
The son who has the Honda now had a ’07 Integra. It finally gave out last year, and we decided that there was no point putting big bucks into it.
