    Twins win ?

  2. blake April 6th, 2011 at 3:37 pm

Id like to see Chavez find the short porch

  3. Erin April 6th, 2011 at 3:37 pm

So how many times are we going to see the comment “is Girardi trying to lose the game?” ;)

  4. UnKnown April 6th, 2011 at 3:37 pm

I’m sure Jeter is thrilled with the benching.

Girardi and Gardy must’ve gotten together for lunch and agreed on sitting a few guys tonight.

  5. Shame Spencer April 6th, 2011 at 3:39 pm

I’m also a little surprised both Alex and Derek are getting a day. I know he doesn’t like to play these guys in a day/night situation though. Hopefully the subs have something to prove, though. They could be very motivated to show their stuff in a real game.

  6. jonathan p April 6th, 2011 at 3:39 pm

    jeter looks finished

  7. Jerkface April 6th, 2011 at 3:39 pm

Will be interesting to see how much rest Girardi gives guys. At the very least, it makes sense to bench Jeter because of his play. He seems to be pressing in the field and at the plate, give him a day to clear his head. Veteran move.

  8. Patrick April 6th, 2011 at 3:40 pm

Uhhhh Girardi is kind of an idiot huh?

Is it really necessary to rest 3.5 guys all on the same damn day? Idiotic, to say the least.

  9. Warning Track Power April 6th, 2011 at 3:40 pm

Chavez! Nice to see him get into a game. It was going to happen today or tomorrow.

Jeter + Martin get a day off.
ARod gets a “half day off”

Every so often our regulars are going to need a blow. Get used to it people!!

  10. blake April 6th, 2011 at 3:40 pm

Pavano will have a lot of lefties to navigate through tonight

  11. ADam April 6th, 2011 at 3:41 pm

    WOW, No Jeter. Interesting

  12. Patrick April 6th, 2011 at 3:41 pm

    Sorry meant to say 2.5

  13. blake April 6th, 2011 at 3:42 pm

Yea it is at least a little surprising to see other guys out with Molina in there.

  14. UnKnown April 6th, 2011 at 3:42 pm

Time to bring back GTLU. No lineup is a certain anymore from here on out.

  15. Warning Track Power April 6th, 2011 at 3:42 pm

Martin’s day off today means he will be available to play in the next 4 games(including the 3 game series vs the sox).
Jeter is going to get a day off just about every week.
What is the problem with that???

  16. ac1 April 6th, 2011 at 3:42 pm

I’m also a little surprised both Alex and Derek are getting a day
    __

    Alex is DH, not benched.

  17. stuckey99 April 6th, 2011 at 3:43 pm

    Nick,

Soon as Molina steps into the batter’s box, make whatever the usual arrangements are to get me your address.

I don’t know if you want to have Chad forward me your email address, or whatever.

I doubt either of us wants to share that info here.

  18. Erica in NY April 6th, 2011 at 3:44 pm

    Cue line up hysteria……………………………

  19. Joe from Long Island April 6th, 2011 at 3:44 pm

jerkface ? oh, I have a sense of humor. ;)

The one thing I admit not spending a lot of time on, is the ongoing war you have with randy. Although, it is better than some of the gametime comments from the well known morons.

  20. Mell April 6th, 2011 at 3:44 pm

    Deep bench tonight.

    Nothing at all

I’m just hoping last year’s trend continues. Every time there were a ton of complaints about a lineup, they’d usually score a ton of runs.

  22. upstate kate April 6th, 2011 at 3:45 pm

I am not complaining about the line up, but I wouldn’t have guessed it.

  23. pat April 6th, 2011 at 3:45 pm

TwinsNow #Twins vs. RHP Freddy Garcia: Span 8, Nishioka 4, Young 7, Morneau 3, Kubel DH, Cuddyer 9, Valencia 5, Butera 2, Casilla 6, Pavano RHP

  24. Jerkface April 6th, 2011 at 3:45 pm

Atleast the Twins have a second tier lineup as well. I could see Chavez and Nunez contributing.

  25. LGY April 6th, 2011 at 3:46 pm

I just opened this post and I literally said out loud WTF??

  26. upstate kate April 6th, 2011 at 3:46 pm

no wonder attendance is down, w/ line ups like that!

I’m sure Jeter is thrilled with the benching.

Girardi and Gardy must’ve gotten together for lunch and agreed on sitting a few guys tonight.

Ha, that was my first thought.

Girardi: “You sit Mauer and Morneau, I’ll sit A-Rod, Jeter and Martin.”

    Gardenhire: “Deal.”

Well, it will be nice to see Chavez and Nunez play.

  28. Rich in NJ April 6th, 2011 at 3:47 pm

The Yankees will still win despite the lineup gymnastics.

  29. Joe from Long Island April 6th, 2011 at 3:47 pm

jerkface – I’m optimistic for both Chavez and Nuney doing well tonight. They’ve got something to prove, especially Chavez. Sometimes, a bit of a chip on the shoulder is good.

  30. jacksquat April 6th, 2011 at 3:47 pm

    oops, meant Mauer and Thome.

  31. Carl April 6th, 2011 at 3:48 pm

No reason to burn guys out now right?

    Right?

  32. jacksquat April 6th, 2011 at 3:48 pm

oh, and A-Rod is still playing. I need to read more carefully…

  33. blake April 6th, 2011 at 3:49 pm

Almost like Gardenhire and Girardi agreed to rest guys together tonight…..I actually like the Yanks lineup against Pavano (except Molina)…..Im thinking if I diss Molina enough he’ll do something productive like Andrew did :)

  34. jacksquat April 6th, 2011 at 3:49 pm

Jeter and Martin for Mauer and Thome. I’ll take it. :)

  35. Jerkface April 6th, 2011 at 3:51 pm

The Yankees will still win despite the lineup gymnastics.

Nunez is going to out hit Jeter :) I could see a clutch HR from Chavez. The problem is that Molina as the second leadoff hitter is going to be dicey. Don’t think you want Molina hitting infront of your big bats. Nor in the key RBI position behind the big bats. Its almost as if his best position is no where in the lineup.

  36. jacksquat April 6th, 2011 at 3:51 pm

    geez…

Make that Posada, Jeter and Martin for Mauer and Thome!

    That’s about even I guess.

    :lol

  40. ac1 April 6th, 2011 at 3:53 pm

Look Molina is a back up catcher. Not many back up catchers are going to hit .300….. Just something we have to deal with. Maybe it will help to have one guy who is guaranteed not to be swinging for a homerun every AB.

  41. jacksquat April 6th, 2011 at 3:56 pm

Anyway, Molina hits like a pitcher, so putting him anywhere but 9th, say 8th, is like hitting your pitcher 8th in the NL, which would be La Russa-ian. And Girardi is not La Russa-ian.

  42. West Coast Yankee Fan April 6th, 2011 at 3:57 pm

This lineup shouldn’t be a surprise – Girardi did this type of thing numerous times last year with the net result being we missed the division title by a game. Instead of resting players one at a time to minimize the effect, he sits multiple players in a game and comes up with a funky batting order . . . IMHO.

  43. Wave Your Hat April 6th, 2011 at 3:58 pm

Come on, we all knew this day was coming (well, maybe stuckey99 didn’t but the rest of us did). It is silly to complain about it, like complaining about the cold in January (no cracks about L.A., Pat M).

  44. Carl April 6th, 2011 at 3:58 pm

Sori said sorry to the media.

  45. Joe from Long Island April 6th, 2011 at 3:59 pm

Even with Nunez and Molina, that lineup is still better than most playing in the majors. Just check the box scores.

  46. Jerkface April 6th, 2011 at 3:59 pm

Not many back up catchers are going to hit .300

Most backup catchers are going to hit .200. Its the rare backup catcher that hits .100.

  47. Melk Man April 6th, 2011 at 3:59 pm

No problem with anything aside from imposter Molina in the lineup

    Nunez for Jeter is fine
    Chavez has to play sometime

  48. randy l. April 6th, 2011 at 3:59 pm

“How is he going to do that in the minors? Minor league pitchers aren’t getting in on his hands consistently. Its a different experience.”

    jerkface-

now that i’ve drawn you into an argument that shows how you like to argue really ridiculous positions knock yourself out. it’s clear to anyone who is paying attention to what is going on with soriano that weather is a factor.

if you want to argue that the sky isn’t really blue, have fun, time for me to play some 80 degree golf and see if i can stay in the high seventies with my new swing changes. i probably can’t because ,like jeter, mechanical changes make me worse for a time before i get the hang of them.

we’ll have to save that jeter debate for another time where you say he sucks and i say he’s a great player.

  49. DocTodd April 6th, 2011 at 3:59 pm

    I know it’s early but Damon .067 , Manny .059 BA

  50. Warning Track Power April 6th, 2011 at 4:00 pm

    Wave-
Tell me about it. There are still “fans” that come here just to complain.

We have a back-up catcher. He has to play at least once a week. Today is a good day for him to play. End of discussion.

Jeter will need a day off just about every week. If Girardi can do that via the DH, he will. If not, then he will sit for Nunez.

What I’m trying to say is, the bench needs to play sometimes.

  51. Jerkface April 6th, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Any other arguments I didn’t make you’d like to fabricate, Randy?

  52. yanks 27 April 6th, 2011 at 4:00 pm

    Right?

Yup. Only an April game… this is the time to give other guys some chances, rather than the A guys.

BrianCoz Soriano said he was upset last night and left without talking to reporters. Said Boras called him this morning and said he needs to talk.

Soriano said he didn’t have his balance last night. He apologized for not meeting the media and said he won’t happen again. Per WFAN

  58. bruceb April 6th, 2011 at 4:07 pm

Jeter’s no great loss. In fact, Nunez may actually strengthen the batting lineup. But we’re going to miss Posada and Martin.

  59. michaels07 April 6th, 2011 at 4:07 pm

The jeter era will soon come to an end, a three yr deal was a big mistake.

  60. Erin April 6th, 2011 at 4:07 pm

BryanHoch Soriano apologizes for not speaking to media. Says he was upset for CC. Girardi says not an issue in clubhouse.

  61. RS April 6th, 2011 at 4:11 pm

I would probably feel a lot better if the Yankees won tonight and then Girardi rested guys tomorrow before the Boston series. Unfortunately, this was probably his game plan all along and yesterday’s messy loss isn’t going to affect today’s managing.

  62. charlestonchew April 6th, 2011 at 4:12 pm

There’s no way to know which lineup would be better. Sure, we can speculate that having Jeter, Martin, and Posada on the bench might hurt the team tonight.

Maybe it will, but maybe it won’t. Perhaps this lineup will get us a win tonight. It’s still a better lineup than the twins have put together.

We can’t know how Chavez (who had a hot spring bat) will play. We have no idea what Nunez will do. What if he performs better than Jeter has in the past few games? What if Molina hits a homerun?

I understand the logic behind the argument that a decision is good or bad in and of itself, whether or not it pays off. But sometimes you take risks, swap out guys, and you just have a feeling things will go a certain way. Maybe Girardi has been watching Chavez and Nunez rake in batting practice and wants to keep them fresh. Maybe Molina’s the kind of catcher Freddy needs.

Trust your manager. He makes some poor decisions from time to time and I’ll be the first to jump on him (leaving Soriano and Logan in last night), but for tonight, give the man a chance. This lineup can score 6+ runs.

  63. Erin April 6th, 2011 at 4:13 pm

Even Soriano’s mom buys into the cold weather theory. ;)

BryanHoch Soriano said he didn’t feel like he had his balance on the mound. He said his mom called from the DR asking if it was too cold for him.

  64. hardwired7 April 6th, 2011 at 4:13 pm

Soriano should ride on the PATH.

If you can remain standing at all times (preferably w/out touching a pole or careening into a stranger as the train heads into a violent turn) then you never have to worry about balance again in your life.

My friends and I call it “getting your PATH legs.”

  65. Niblick April 6th, 2011 at 4:14 pm

Girardi thinks it’s still spring training.

  66. Joe from Long Island April 6th, 2011 at 4:16 pm

glad that soriano is trying to make things right. Lots of guys don’t. give him credit for standing up, albeit late. better late than never.

  67. upstate kate April 6th, 2011 at 4:16 pm

Rays in sole possession of last place with a loss to the Angels until tonight when Matsuzaka does his usual high pitch count by the 4th inning in Cleveland.

  69. UnKnown April 6th, 2011 at 4:17 pm

I don’t think Damon is going to be recieving his bonus that he has in his contract regarding attendance.

Hopefully the Sux can follow the Rays path to loserville USA

  70. Bronx Jeers April 6th, 2011 at 4:18 pm

I’m kind of glad it didn’t become as big a story as it seemed it might last night.

Some of these writers were primed to turned this into a drama.

  74. RMS April 6th, 2011 at 4:25 pm

Playing in NY, you have to meet the media. Soriano apologized. Case closed.
    —————————————————————
Can we give Jeter some more time before writing him off.
    ————————————————————————————–

Molina is the back-up catcher, he has to play sometime. Come on.

  75. jacksquat April 6th, 2011 at 4:25 pm

Our bench is much better this year. Chavez is a former All-Star and gold glover and looked in spring traning like he can still hit and play good defense. Nunez is a better hitter than Pena and probably at least the equal of Jeter defensively (probably more errors, but probably more range). The only real hurt here is Molina, and he’s only temporary. Can’t play Martin every game.

  76. LGY April 6th, 2011 at 4:26 pm

I guess in one way you can say Girardi wanted to show faith in Sori last night, but that backfired in a big way on him.

The guy feels awful about last night.

Hopefully locking down the eighth in a 1 run game in Fenway will be the cure for that.

  77. upstate kate April 6th, 2011 at 4:27 pm

Melky has been one of the stars of my fantasy team :)

  78. LGY April 6th, 2011 at 4:28 pm

14.2 innings and only 2 runs so far.

  79. Fran the original April 6th, 2011 at 4:29 pm

Good job by Soriano clearing this up quickly.

    And yay Melky.

  80. DocTodd April 6th, 2011 at 4:34 pm

Wow ,Tampa 0-5 and without Longoria for awhile, not that I’m complaining!

  81. m April 6th, 2011 at 4:34 pm

I was on the road yesterday, but I was very pleased when I checked in to find CC & the Yanks up 4-0. Later on I was horrified to see that not only was the game not over, but Soriano had a horrible outing. The box s ore doesn’t tell the whole story, but LoHud never disappoints. Seems like risky defense and the reliever who relieved Soriano exacerbated the situation.

But on the bright side, the Sox and Rays lost. Pretty soon we can stop talking about the Rays. They might go back to being the cellar-dwellers of the East. I refuse to think that had that much if an impact, but something is definitely wrong. Longoria is out? And Manny is sub-seventies. They might be regressing to their mean as a team. ;)

  82. Pat M. April 6th, 2011 at 4:36 pm

Tin Cup ( The Original Randy I ) …..You’re sandbagging us, you’ll shoot even par and hustle some of the locals…..As stated a few days ago, playing in the cold and wind is absolutely brutal….And if it gets wet out it’s pure misery…….Your hands and then your feet get nearly numb…..This is especially true after playing in the warm sun for 6 weeks prior……Not an excuse, but a fact

  83. LGY April 6th, 2011 at 4:36 pm

Freddy is going 7 strong tonight.

Mark it down. Carve it in stone. Take it to the bank. Take it to the ATM. Bet the house. Bet the condo. Go all in. Bet everything!!

Wow, sorry. Pete Abe got me going.

  85. Erin April 6th, 2011 at 4:37 pm

Ledger_Yankees My opinion: I think Girardi did the right thing bringing Soriano in. The idea of the “save” situation is so arbitrary and stupid.

  86. Jerkface April 6th, 2011 at 4:38 pm

Can’t believe Ron Washington is going to Darren 0′Day with a 4 run lead. Where is Feliz?

Ledger_Yankees My opinion: I think Girardi did the right thing bringing Soriano in. The idea of the “save” situation is so arbitrary and stupid.

This doesn’t make sense. The idea of a ‘save situation’ being stupid is that you pitch your best pitchers in the high leverage situations. 4 run lead in the 8th is not a high leverage situation.

It’s not about the save. It’s about D-Rob.

    Let D-Rob pitch.

  90. LGY April 6th, 2011 at 4:42 pm

In the one game the Twins rocked Garcia last year.

    Mauer: 3-5, 1 HR, 3 RBIs
    Thome: 2-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI

This is a very nice gesture by Gardenhire. Maybe he felt bad about actually beating the Yankees last night? His universe felt a little out of tilt?

  91. tyanksfan36 April 6th, 2011 at 4:42 pm

you know the best thing about Tampa being 0-5? They haven’t started taunting me for being a Yankee fan. I know they will eventually win but its been fun this past week. I do kinda feel bad for Hellickson that they couldnt score any runs to even pretend to support him.

  92. Mike_Boston April 6th, 2011 at 4:42 pm

  95. icebird753 April 6th, 2011 at 4:44 pm

My predictions for the lineup: 1. Gardner LF
    2. Granderson CF
    3. Teixeira 1B
    4. Rodriguez DH
    5. Cano 2B
    6. Swisher RF
    7. Chavez 3B
    8. Nunez SS
    9. Molina C
WOW I’m right! I guessed the lineup perfectly and will now be rewarded with nothing but air! lol seriously though, I’m just happy to have the season back. The sound of that thwack when the ball connect with maple wood, the view of that freshly trimmed healthy grass, the roar of the stadium….welcome back baseball.

  96. Irreverent Discourse April 6th, 2011 at 4:44 pm

Jerkface – 4 run lead in the 8th is not a high leverage situation.

With the top of their lineup coming up, how is it not? Obviously it quickly devolves into a high leverage situation if 2 batters get on.

  97. Wave Your Hat April 6th, 2011 at 4:45 pm

“Freddy is going 7 strong tonight.”

He’ll have to change his historical ways, however, as current Twins hitters have a career .931 OPS against him.

  98. tyanksfan36 April 6th, 2011 at 4:45 pm

you know though, Hellickson struck out 10 so all those in attendance scored a free pizza. In all the Yankee/Rays games I went to last year I could have gotten a free pizza every time.

  99. Jerkface April 6th, 2011 at 4:46 pm

With the top of their lineup coming up, how is it not?

Because most lineups don’t score 4 runs in an inning? Its not heart of the order with a 1 run lead. All of them have to reach and then score for them to tie the game, its crazy.

And it wasn’t even the heart of the order, it was the bottom of the order (with some pinch hitters)

  100. yanks 27 April 6th, 2011 at 4:46 pm

I can go either way on 4 run leads. It is not a ‘high leverage’ game, yet it is not a kind of game that is really comfortable either (if someone other than MO is pitching). The reliever walks a couple guys, you start to get MO loose anyway.

5+ run leads are different. When we had a 5 run lead against DET, Joe gave Logan some rope to work with.

Any lead inside of 3 runs goes to the big guns. Any lead of 5+ gets the non So-Mo portion of the pen in to start the inning. 4 is neither here nor there.

ID, I know you love fangraphs stuff, look at the chart: http://www.fangraphs.com/wins......eason=2011

8th inning starts and its still low leverage until a bunch of guys get on.

jerkface – i saw that, i usually leave it up on my pc during the game. My point really is that there is very little “leverage” difference in coming in with a 4 run lead or a 3 run lead, they are arbitrary stipulations made by the save stat, not by the reality of baseball.

I’m not saying I would have started the inning with Soriano, that was certainly an odd choice… but when you are staring an “off day” of sorts in the face, while facing a much better pitcher than you are throwing out there (pavano vs garcia)… it made sense to me to lock down the win. Not much different than bringing Mo in for a very low leverage 3 run lead in the 9th inning.

What I would not have done was bring in Robertson to face a guy that can only hit fastballs… and then only throw him fastballs.

Ok but what does that point have to do with my point? I would bring D-rob in with a 3 run lead too.

3 run lead is low leverage. Most closers can save a 3 run game.

Curious that Girardi brought in his 4th(5th?) reliever on the depth chart for the highest leverage AB .
