Pitching matchups vs. Boston (plus a chat)

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Apr 07, 2011 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Sweeny Murti and I shared a ride to Boston this afternoon. As you might have heard, the Yankees begin a weekend series against the Red Sox tomorrow, playing back-to-back day games before settling into ESPN’s Sunday night game.

Our friend Sam Borden is — I believe — leaving very early tomorrow morning. While I’m in the clubhouse, Sam will be hosting a quick chat from the Fenway press box. Stop by at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow to talk to Sam leading into the game.

Here are the pitching matchups for the weekend.

Friday
RHP Phil Hughes (0-1, 11.25)
vs.
RHP John Lackey (0-1, 22.09)
2:05 p.m., YES

Saturday
RHP Ivan Nova (1-0, 4.50)
vs.
RHP Clay Buchholz (0-1, 5.68)
1:10 p.m., FOX

Sunday
LHP CC Sabathia (0-0, 1.38)
vs.
RHP Josh Beckett (0-1, 5.40)
8:05 p.m., ESPN

aw my smiley face didn’t show up. Romine with a catchers error :( but 2 walks! :)

  5. West Coast Yankee Fan April 7th, 2011 at 10:06 pm

The schedule has been cleared for tomorrow, I am so pumped, I cannot wait! IMO, there is nothing in sports like Yankees-Red Sox, and to beat them in Fenway is about as sweet as it gets.

  6. yankeefeminista April 7th, 2011 at 10:10 pm

Thanks for updates, GB7. I see Heyer got the Trenton win.

  7. Rich in NJ April 7th, 2011 at 10:10 pm

    Here’s a tough question:

Hypothetically, if the choice was between Hughes pitching well with velo and losing, and not pitching well with the same reduced velo but the team wins, which would you take?

I think I’d take the former.

  8. Drive 4-6 April 7th, 2011 at 10:11 pm

    Pat,

Did you say YES & DirecTV agreed to terms? That’s great news!

  9. Jerkface April 7th, 2011 at 10:14 pm

The former portends future success, I hope he is above 90 tomorrow.

  10. GreenBeret7 April 7th, 2011 at 10:14 pm

Fran, I’ll have more up on the board in later days. Just need to stay awake long enough to do it.

  11. GreenBeret7 April 7th, 2011 at 10:17 pm

Romine’s error was once again on his old problem….catcher’s interference.

  12. yankeefeminista April 7th, 2011 at 10:17 pm

I just noticed that Corban had two throwing errors.

  13. GreenBeret7 April 7th, 2011 at 10:22 pm

yankees have a lot of minor leafue infielders that make a ton of throwing errors. More throwing than fielding, I think. I saw that angelini made an error tonight. Some things never change. He just never has developed.

    The former

you’re most welcome, Fran. I need to look to find tomorrow’s starting times.

  17. GreenBeret7 April 7th, 2011 at 10:30 pm

As long as the team wins, that’s the important part. Hughes is not an issue on 7 April.

  18. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 7th, 2011 at 10:36 pm

“If the Yankees had started 0-6, not sure it’s nothing is what would be said?”

Thought the same thing, Pat. I played it out in my mind, reversing the scenario. The Sux come into the Stadium with a 4 and 2 record while the Yanks are 0-6. Worse, the Sux would have been 5 and 1 if it weren’t for an unusual outing by their “excellent” 8th inning man.

How many on this forum do you think would be singing the praises of the Yanks and saying the 0-6 means start “nothing.”? How many wouldn’t be convinced that “the old AJ” was back, just as they knew he would be?

I personally would be walking around without a head as I counseled patience and guaranteed that the Yanks would be in the playoffs.

    ***********

Pat M – I think you called the whole thing right. My favorite part was when you said the Sux would be there in the end – AS THE WILD CARD! Though I think you may have been being too generous, I can understand how you could get there.

    :)

I gotta tell you, I don’t know how many ways you can interpret someone saying “I didn’t like that slide. Too late” other than to say Swisher was being intentionally dirty. You really have to reach to find any other meaning.

  21. Betsy April 7th, 2011 at 10:42 pm

Pat M, that’s what my father and I are going to do…………the appraiser told him that the damage to the car was extensive, much more than what our family mechanic had thought. So, we’re going to go shopping for a car – and I’ve now given serious consideration to a used-car thanks to the great tips here. Thanks a lot!

Jackamir, I appreciate everyone’s advice; I wasn’t trying to give Bojo a hard time, but this is the first time I’ve been involved in something like this (not an accident mind you, but the first time it was this extensive) and I’m admittedly not a suspicious person. I wasn’t sure what to think – that’s why I wanted to talk it over with my father. The worst part is going to be cleaning out my trunk – what a mess, lol

  22. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 7th, 2011 at 10:44 pm

When’s the last time the Yanks’ pitchers ERAs were all lower than those of the Suxers? Actually it might have been recently. I just don’t remember the last time that happened.

  23. Betsy April 7th, 2011 at 10:44 pm

Rich, I’d rather Phil pitch well and lose – it would just be one game and Phil means more to the team than just one game. However, again, it’s not just about velocity. I’m not worried about that – I believe, though it’s odd if he doesn’t have arm strength yet, that it will come back. What he needs to succeed, at Fenway or elsewhere, is the curve and the change. He seemed to be in a positive frame of mind today on WFAN so I hope for his sake, and the teams, that all goes well.

  24. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 7th, 2011 at 10:45 pm

Betsy, I don’t think Bojo knows that your dad is an attorney so you have been talking to one.

    :)

  25. Betsy April 7th, 2011 at 10:48 pm

Trish, I did mention it……….but I really appreciate his help nonetheless – I appreciate everyone’s help. I’m trying not to get too depressed about this – I do have my trip to Disney to look forward too !

  26. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 7th, 2011 at 10:53 pm

Betsy, for all you know before this is over you might end up with a car just likes yours, only a newer model, and you might end up getting it for the money you’re going to end up with! It will be an adventure. You’ll get to look around and comparison shop. And with this economy, I bet you’ll be able to drive a very nice bargain!

  27. Fran the original April 7th, 2011 at 10:54 pm

Betsy, what kind of car are you looking for?

  28. Betsy April 7th, 2011 at 10:58 pm

Fran, I’d like to get the same car I had – (blue!) Honda Accord……..

Trish, maybe if it’s a used car, but I can’t see a new car costing only the $10, 600.00 I’m getting from the insurance. I’m going to try and think of it like you do as you’re very positive and I don’t feel like moping about it anymore, lol

  29. m April 7th, 2011 at 11:00 pm

I prefer a win with a reunion between Phil and his velocity.

With a little control on top!

Bets, I didn’t mean brand new. But maybe pretty close to it. A demonstration car. A car that had been leased. A used car but with very low mileage, but still more current a model than your own.

I am sitting her totally knowing you are going to come and tell us how excited you are about the car you’re getting. Book it Bets! It will be all good, I know it.

  42. stuckey99 April 7th, 2011 at 11:12 pm

    I’d take the win.

Same reasoning – it’s just one game.

The history of Phil Hughes season/velocity is not going to be written tomorrow night. Fans expecting 92.5 avg to suddenly reappear overnight are probably setting themselves up for a disappointment.

Understand I hope he pitches well AND wins, but given nothing definitive will happen tomorrow one way or the other, I’ll take the whole point of him being out there to begin with – winning a game.

  46. Betsy April 7th, 2011 at 11:16 pm

M, yes – some guy tried to make a u-turn – except he didn’t look, he didn’t slow down and he cut across my lane; my car ended up crashed into the curb on the opposite side of the street (NOT the direction I was driving in). So, I was lucky I wasn’t killed, esp. so because there were no cars coming at the time I crashed into the curve. Physically I appear to be fine, but my car is totalled :(

  47. Betsy April 7th, 2011 at 11:16 pm

And the Yanks would still be over .500.

I havent ever seen someone so bad. Is he always that bad or you think he might have been nervous? He threw a few balls very wide of first and one into the stands. Luckily and magically Claiborne got out of the inning without allowing anything more than the leadoff home run after he loaded the bases with no outs. Taylor Grote hit a monster home run but the TY offense was sleeping for the majority of the game. I think they got about 7 hits from the 4th to the end.

  73. stuckey99 April 8th, 2011 at 12:12 am

“Yankee peopele! What are we talking about tonight?”

Okay, so here’s a question, if the Yanks win 2 of 3 or lose 2 of 3, how do you want to them to go.

    I’ll take L-W-W for a series win.

And L-L-W for the series lost.

  74. LGY April 8th, 2011 at 12:15 am

well since ive got Nova on my Fantasy BB team, I want him to do well and I want CC to finally get a win even though the person im up against has him. How about W-W-W? Nova’s only 2 losses last year were against the Red Sox so he may have something to prove and Hughes wasnt the best his last time out so he will have something to prove. though the Sox have sucked so they have a lot to prove. Its always an interesting series.

Well LGY if you countenance someone misrepresenting what someone says that’s on you. Heyman said he was late, he never said Swisher was dirty. I think my position on that was a slam dunk – people’s blind hatred of anything Heyman blinds them.

By the way, I think Heyman was wrong, I didn’t think Swisher slid late.

Someone brought this up early but it is a good point to bring up again, How many games would the Sux have to lose to start the season before they started to admit they were wrong on their predictio? its not 6 so what 9, 10 maybe 15?

And by the way someone needs to close down Heyman’s twitter account. He tweets like a raving drunk 40 year old sitting in their Mom’s basement.

Bad night….My girl Pia is bounced from American Idol……A cold winter storm is approaching So. Cal with temps dropping into the mid 50′s……I just had my cars detailed…..Nick in SF….I just played the Yanks for tomorrow

  99. Nick in SF April 8th, 2011 at 1:07 am

Hopefully Phil can dial it up to 91 and Lackey gets neck strain.

  100. West Coast Yankee Fan April 8th, 2011 at 1:12 am

LGY – Scotch or Vodka? You’re particularly incoherent tonight – even for you.

  101. Pat M. April 8th, 2011 at 1:19 am

Nick in SF…..Lackey is going to hang one to Alex and it’ll land in Kenmore Square…..

  102. LGY April 8th, 2011 at 1:20 am

Goodnight Yankee people. Tomorrow the Yankees will be victorious.

  103. YankeeFan April 8th, 2011 at 1:22 am

I have to write a paper for an anthropology class, and I decided to use my favorite site (this one) as my topic. Can everyone tell me why they started reading and posting on this specific blog. Also, what you like about it? Also, have you guys come across a lot of red sox fans posting comments? I will greatly appreciate your responses.

  104. Jerkface April 8th, 2011 at 1:24 am

Tyanks, need a link to your blog its not showing in your name anymore.

  105. m April 8th, 2011 at 1:33 am

Lol. Is “that same group” LoHud?

    Yankee Fan,

I think it would be interesting to investigate the influence of this particular blog.

Four things off the top of my head

    1. Hinske’s HR call
    2. Players families (Britton?)
    3. Cashman claims to be a reader.
    4. I think Heyman just dissed us. :P

  106. YankeeFan April 8th, 2011 at 1:36 am

Cashman reads the blog? Well why did you personally start reading this specific blog?

  107. Jerkface April 8th, 2011 at 1:42 am

I tweeted to heyman that it was ok if he didn’t love the slide, because no one loves him back.

  108. m April 8th, 2011 at 1:43 am

I first went to the one on YES. The message board? It was crap. I think I found this one off a blog roll. Been here ever since, almost exclusively. I don’t post anywhere else. Lurked at RAB during a hiatus from here this winter, but that’s about it.

  109. Pat M. April 8th, 2011 at 1:55 am

m….I would never had thought of you as a ” Lurker “

    Jerkface

First off Good morning if you see this. Secondly, I took my blog off my name so that’s why its not working. When I am on later today ill link it back up for a while and let you know.

  112. RhapsodyInBlue April 8th, 2011 at 6:14 am

A tough day at work knowing the Bombers are playing in Half Stadium this afternoon.

  113. sevrox April 8th, 2011 at 6:54 am

I remember back in ‘the day’ when the only access to the Yanks was whenever they’d play on the ‘Game of the Week’ and every other week paragraphs in ‘The Sporting News’ over the wintertime.

Now with subscriptions to mlb.tv and extrainnings and blogs like lohud and RAB – Yank saturation is constantly underway. Could be good or bad depending on the temperature of either blog.

Regardless – Boston’s due to break out and anything can happen when these two teams square off.

  114. blake April 8th, 2011 at 7:20 am

So Mike and Mike just asked Buster what was going on with the Red Sox……..and you guessed it, he compared them to the 1998 Yankees who lost their first 3 games. This is becoming an annual event.

  115. Fran the original April 8th, 2011 at 7:23 am

    Good morning.

    Blake,
I have heard many of the ESPN analysts the last few days compare the Red Sox to the 1998 Yankees. But that was loosing the first 3, not the first 6. Hopefully soon to be 7.

  116. blake April 8th, 2011 at 7:27 am

    Fran,

I guess it makes them.sleep better at night.

  117. MaineYankee April 8th, 2011 at 7:28 am

For your morning humor from Pete Abes blog.

    “We removed PeteAbraham’s comment.”

I thought he was the one to do the removing.

It’s not only that the RS have lost the first six but how they have lost them.

They look like the Bad News Bears.

  118. SJ44 April 8th, 2011 at 7:31 am

It’s kind of hard to be objective when your Bristol marching orders are to be Red Sox cheerleaders.

Even if the Red Sox swept the Yankees this weekend, they aren’t anything close to the ’98 Yankees.

Just as the last team Buster compared to the ’98 Yankees, the 2010 Rays, weren’t anything close to the ’98 Yankees.

That team at least started 32-12. Does he really think this Red Sox team is going to go 32-6 to equal that start?

There should be some kind of punishment of comparing teams that don’t measure up to the ’98 Yankees.

A media timeout, if you will.

It would keep them from making fools of themselves.

  119. Fran the original April 8th, 2011 at 7:36 am

Does he really think this Red Sox team is going to go 32-6 to equal that start?
    ***********************
    SJ,

Maybe he does. I mean after all, they thought the Sox were going to be 162-0 ;)

  120. blake April 8th, 2011 at 7:36 am

I don’t know if its because Buster covered the 98 Yankees or what but this “well they remind me of the 98 Yankees” stuff is getting ridiculous. Buster is getting worse and worse…..I think twitter is ruining him.

  121. SJ44 April 8th, 2011 at 7:37 am

Look, the Red Sox have a good team.

They aren’t however, some kind of juggernaut team and that has nothing to do with an 0-6 start.

    They have very real issues.

Catcher, closer, and 60% of their starters are HUGE question marks.

The bottom 3 of their order is also up in the air.

Will they be in the race all year? Yes, if they stay healthy.

However, the moronic hype surrounding this team to start the year, and comparing them to all-time great teams when they are 0-6, is just idiotic. Even for the Clown College that is ESPN.

  122. upstate kate April 8th, 2011 at 7:37 am

    good morning all
looking forward to seeing Beauty and the Beast…with Phil winning of course!

  123. Tom in N.J. April 8th, 2011 at 7:39 am

This cannot be good news for the Sox going forward:

Talk about selling your soul to the devil.

I don’t see how they can look themselves in the mirror in the morning when they know the stupid things they will say that day.

I guess journalistic integrety doesn’t mean much today.

Kruk is about the worst one there.

  125. Tom in N.J. April 8th, 2011 at 7:41 am

And Buster throws around 1998 Yankee references way too much to be taken seriously.

  126. MaineYankee April 8th, 2011 at 7:42 am

    integrity.

I lost my book of GB7 excuses so just forgive me.

  127. SJ44 April 8th, 2011 at 7:44 am

    Blake,

It’s dumb. It really is. He makes himself look like a fool and he’s not a dumb man.

I find it fascinating how few followers in the grand scheme of things ESPN personalities have on Twitter.

If you add up all the followers main ESPN personalities have on Twitter, they don’t equal Nick Swisher.

What does that tell me? Despite all their exposure on all of their platforms, people just don’t care what they have to say.

They are not interesting, entertaining, nor informative enough to attract a loyal following.

In other words, what they are trying to sell to the public, ain’t workin’ out.

  128. blake April 8th, 2011 at 7:53 am

    SJ,

Really I think it’s because the majority of what they say is either their opinion, which is really meaningless, or them quoting some unknown scout or source (which again is meaningless)…..readers don’t like writers who have agendas, even if they are perceived ones. The modern quantity vs. quality aspect of sports coverage is really dumbing down the information and accuracy of what’s out there IMO……but oh well. Buster also did mention that the Red Sox had a guy who they would want to see on the mound for the Yankees tonight in Phil Hughes (mentioned his velocity drop and compared him to Javy from last year)…..funny he didn’t mention the 20+ era guy on the hill for the Sox ;)

  129. blake April 8th, 2011 at 8:00 am

    SJ,

checking some box score….2-4 with a walk in AA debut for Tony. Not bad!

  130. SJ44 April 8th, 2011 at 8:01 am

Talbott pitched for the Indians the other night, didn’t throw a pitch above, 90, and shut down the Sox.

Ultimately, the Sox will get going.

I just find it hysterical that a team with very real weaknesses in some very key areas, areas of a team that often decide championships, are so mindlessly glossed over by the “Worldwide Leader of Sports”.

Then again, I’m probably still in shock over Buster’s ST Tweet on how Andrew Miller threw the “greatest inning ever” to think clearly.

  131. SJ44 April 8th, 2011 at 8:04 am

    Blake,

Inaccurate box score. He was 1-2 with 2 BB last night.

Got the hit and a walk off Jacob Tirmer, who was NASTY last night.

He was Wang-like, throwing 95 MPH sinkers and he’s only 19!

Was a good AA debut for Tony. Also played flawlessly behind the plate.

  132. blake April 8th, 2011 at 8:07 am

    SJ,

the box score was right actually….I just can’t read. Either way, nice job.
