One of the most impressive things re: Nova that was apparent in his last start is, although he didn’t have his best stuff, he still kept the team in the game and gave a solid performance.

Right now, that’s something both Hughes and Burnett have yet to prove they’re capable of.

I’ve always said, being an ace, or a really good pitcher for that matter, isn’t blowing teams away when you’re on. Most pitchers can do that. It’s when you don’t have your best stuff and every at-bat is a battle and you’re still able to keep your team in the game.

That’s what separates CC from most others, his ability to keep the game close without his best stuff. Nova is showing he’s also able to do that.

Is he an ace. No. But IMO, he’s really opening up some eyes.

heck, GF – some might actually believe they could teach you or me a thing or two about demyelinating polyneuropathy. After all, they could read something on the internet and instantly become an expert.

More so than you or I.

    —————-

LOL. Yeah, I’ve learned more about demyelinating polyneuropathy in the last year than I would have ever cared to know prior to that.

I’m happy to report that I’m probably in the best shape of my adult life right now. I’m also down to my high school weight, which was 20 years ago.

It was a struggle for awhile but I have a considerably better handle on this thing than anyone could have imagined 18 months ago.

Girardi said the Yankees will stay on rotation this week. Burnett-Hughes-Nova against Baltimore, Garcia-Sabathia-Burnett against Texas.

  4. Joe from Long Island April 10th, 2011 at 6:36 pm

    JoeyA – spot on.

Example A is Dallas Braden. His perfect game was an historic feat. Truly great pitching performance. But, Braden and his gem is a perfect example of what you just said – when a pitcher has his good stuff, anything’s possible.

What separates the mediocre from the best is the ability to pitch well – not throw, but pitch – when you don’t have your best. To get those 4-3, or 5-4 wins that in and of themselves aren’t sexy, but put Ws in the column for your team. And, your teammates recognize that.

Nova is just starting out. He’s shown some promise to do just that.

I agree with Pat M. Ivan Nova might just be a surprise Rookie of the Year candidate. Surprise, that is, only to those who don’t see what he’s doing.

    Big Al,

I am not “refusing” to answer your question. I’m sorry, but I am unable to monitor every one of your over-reactionary Posada posts.

The question you ask is too difficult to answer in precise terms with the little information available. How much is Posada struggling? Is he just struggling vs RHP or LHP or both? Is he having good at bats, but the results are not there? How is Chavez doing? Has he shown any ability to hit LHP?

At this stage, I do know that 8 games is not even remotely the time to be thinking about these questions. I also must point out it has not been 8 games of struggling. He has had 3 poor games of an 0-12 skid to drag his numbers down.

To attempt to answer your question in somewhat precise terms, I don’t even think about any lineup changes until June 1st. And that is just the date I just begin considering any changes especially when it comes to a player like Posada who has such a great track record of hitting.

Now that I have answered your question, I would be really interested in your answer to GF’s question about Jeter/Nunez.

  6. LGY April 10th, 2011 at 6:39 pm

    LOL.

    [Comment From BIG AL]
If after 20 – 30 games Posada is still hitting well below .200, do you expect Girardi to make a change at DH, or stick with Jorge?

Sam: I’d think the same concept would apply – no big changes until he’s had 150 ABs or so. Maybe even more, since they’re asking him to get used to a new position at DH. At least Jeter is doing the same job he’s always done.

  7. LGY April 10th, 2011 at 6:40 pm

“It’s a Yankees discussion board. What on earth is more appropriate for fans to give their opinion on than the lineup?”

    Big Al,

I have no qualms with you. I’ve enjoyed your contributions here as well.

But, truth be told, Teixeira was pretty rotten for two months last season. He didn’t hit his 4th dinger last season until after the first week of May.

Yet, Girardi stuck with him. As he should.

I just think people overreact when some of the guys have a bad game or two.

It’s a LONG season. These guys have plenty of time to overcome struggles.

  9. MaineYankee April 10th, 2011 at 6:42 pm

    JoeyA

I assume you are refering to last year in regards to Burnett.

  10. JoeyA April 10th, 2011 at 6:44 pm

    Joe from L.I.

I love the distinction between pitching and throwing. As an aside, how would you categorize Chapman? Little bit of both. haha. He is just a freak.

On the subject @ hand. I said it yesterday. Nova is getting the absolute most out of his talent and abilities and is continuing to improve and develop.

Hughes, while nobody questions has more talent and upside than Nova, seems to still be searching. Can’t seem to harness all that talent.

One would have thought he figured it out somewhat after last year’s first half. Just goes to show how crazy this game of baseball truly is,

  11. Benny Blanco April 10th, 2011 at 6:45 pm

I hope tex starts to get back on track. he’s 1 for his last 16. He just needs a couple of hits because 1-16 can turn into 1-24 in a hurry.

  12. JoeyA April 10th, 2011 at 6:45 pm

    MaineYankee,

    Of course. :)

  13. Joe from Long Island April 10th, 2011 at 6:49 pm

JoeyA – I haven’t seen enough of Chapman to really say anyting intelligent. I’m very, very curious as to what the Yanks saw that they seemingly just cut him off last year.

As far as Hughes – I wish I knew what to think. Based on what Joe and Rothschild have said, it sounds more like a dead arm than anything else. But, it frustrates the heck out of me. It must frustrate Phil a heck of a lot more.

  14. 4time April 10th, 2011 at 6:50 pm

    Buster_ESPN
Phil Hughes has tinkered with his delivery, trying to drive toward home plate more aggressively

  15. LGY April 10th, 2011 at 6:50 pm

    Boston’s lineup:

    Crawford LF
    Pedroia 2B
    Gonzalez 1B
    Youkilis 3B
    Ortiz DH
    Cameron CF
    Drew RF
    Varitek C
    Scutaro SS

  16. tyanksfan36 April 10th, 2011 at 6:57 pm

My whole facebook newsfeed is full of that annoying Joe Maddon acting like an idiot trying to eject the umpires at the game. Maybe if he spent more time figuring out why his team sucks then trying to make the top plays of the day, they wouldnt be 1-8. Where is MTU when I need him.

  17. Joe from Long Island April 10th, 2011 at 7:01 pm

tyanksfan36 – he already knows why his team sucks. He doesn’t have the players. Sounds like he’s just showing his frustrations. How professional.

  18. LGY April 10th, 2011 at 7:04 pm

We may see Eric Chavez after all

AnthonyMcCarron A-Rod has spent most of BP inside and was in trainer’s room earlier. Girardi said he’s not feeling well, but he’s not out of lineup yet.

tomingeorgia, definitely people here who enjoy the game the way we do and are happy to watch it unfold without feeling a ton of stress about things. I can’t think of every name but I can tell you Green Beret 7 is one, ac1, Fran, Tom in NJ, I’d say Nick in SF is a big candidate, also Pat M. I’m sure there are others. And if anyone I named doesn’t belong in the list, they can feel free to opt out.

    :)

#RedSox post a lot of signs saying Fenway is “America’s Most Beloved Ballpark.” Who voted on that?
    ___

THANK YOU!!!! i was thinking the same thing on friday when they kept announcing that.

  22. BoJo April 10th, 2011 at 7:08 pm

Too bad if ARod can’t play. I think he hits Beckett pretty well.

  23. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 10th, 2011 at 7:09 pm

    Bojo too for sure.

  24. ac1 April 10th, 2011 at 7:09 pm

if a-rod can’t start, let Chavez start, and see if Alex can rest up for the late innings…

Either way, Beckett is going to suck.

Same type of marketing brains that appointed Dallas “America’s team.”

  28. yankeefeminista April 10th, 2011 at 7:15 pm

I heard that Alex is out. Chavez in. Did they say we are moving Cano up to 4th?

  29. Betsy April 10th, 2011 at 7:16 pm

    What’s wrong with Alex?

The whole idea of benching Posada because Chavez had a good game is just beyond silly…………

  30. Asd April 10th, 2011 at 7:17 pm

Anyone else surprised at the Chad answer to the Cano/King Felix trade?

  31. yankeefeminista April 10th, 2011 at 7:17 pm

    They said he was “sick.”

  32. SJ44 April 10th, 2011 at 7:18 pm

I think the call for lineup changes is a “bit” over the top, even for this blog.

    It’s been 8 games folks.

Posada, Tex, Jeter, or any other everyday player, is getting pulled from the lineup anytime soon.

    One last thing……

I like Eric Chavez and it’s great he’s on the team.

But, to say he’s “hot” and deserves to play everyday, based on ONE game, especially since he hasn’t been healthy enough to be an everyday player in over 3 years, is a bit over the top.

  33. SJ44 April 10th, 2011 at 7:19 pm

Alex has a touch of the flu.

  34. hillbillyshakespeare April 10th, 2011 at 7:19 pm

    what did he say?

  35. GreenBeret7 April 10th, 2011 at 7:20 pm

I imagine it’s the same bug that floats around Fenway everytime the Yankees visit. Rodriguez will most likely get an at bat some time tonight.

  36. ac1 April 10th, 2011 at 7:20 pm

does espn do a green monster piece every time the sox are on?

  37. Betsy April 10th, 2011 at 7:20 pm

Thanks, Yankeesfem and SJ – feel better, Alex!

I was more surprised at the “Manny was quite a character” answer. He and Ortiz get that, they don’t get the “he’s nothing but a cheat” feeling from people, like Alex does.

  38. ac1 April 10th, 2011 at 7:21 pm

wait…. espn is calling it america’s most beloved park? WOW!!!!

  39. Betsy April 10th, 2011 at 7:21 pm

I wouldn’t trade Cano for anyone, including Felix.

  40. 4time April 10th, 2011 at 7:22 pm

So what is the point of this ESPN pregame show?

An hour long genuflection of Fenway Park? America’s most beloved park… lmao

  41. GreenBeret7 April 10th, 2011 at 7:22 pm

I’d say that outside of Boston, Wrigley Field is more “beloved”. Fenway is tolerated.

  42. ac1 April 10th, 2011 at 7:22 pm

I was more surprised at the “Manny was quite a character” answer. He and Ortiz get that, they don’t get the “he’s nothing but a cheat” feeling from people, like Alex does.
    ___

Of course not, because that would tarnish espn’s precious sox..

Manny is so far past the other roid users, as he tested positive in 04 report, AND twice since the drug policy started. Alex has been clean (not tested positive), since the new policy was in place. How exactly do they give Manny a pass?

  43. Asd April 10th, 2011 at 7:22 pm

    >I wouldn’t trade Cano for anyone, including Felix.

I just think it would be giving up a long term solution to fix a short term problem.

  44. MTU April 10th, 2011 at 7:23 pm

  46. Yank 97 April 10th, 2011 at 7:24 pm

Wouldn’t be a Yanks-Sox nationally televised game without slobbing over some aspect of the Sox franchise. Tonight, it appears to be the ballpark.

  47. SJ44 April 10th, 2011 at 7:24 pm

Wrigley is baseball heaven..Fenway is a dump.

The freaking showers don’t even work in that pit.

No wonder guys get sick there.

I think that it’s something left over from Teddy Ballgame’s day. Visiting team showers not working….sounds like the old Red Aurbach tricks at the Boston Garden.

  51. Betsy April 10th, 2011 at 7:26 pm

Sorry, I hate the Sox, but I think Fenway is a beautiful park. I’m not going to dump on it just because I am no fan of their team
