I can’t watch tonight, so let’s go postponement!

Like the idea of bringing up Noesi.

Same thing they did with Nova last year.

re: sherman – if you don’t take a chance, you don’t get any rewards.

The goal is not to be right in your picks 100% of the time. The goal is to put together a team good enough to win and go all the way. Yeah, the Yanks have the advantage of having enough money to take more chances, in the hope that enough of them work out well. So, why not use that advantage to your benefit?

  9. GreenBeret7 April 13th, 2011 at 3:52 pm

The only thing wrong with Crawford is that they keep moving him around in the batting order. He’s not a #3 or certainly not a #7 hitter. Ideally,, he’s a #2 hitter. That wall seems to be screwing up his approach in that he’s trying to hit everything that way. He’s a hit ‘em where they pitch ‘em type.

    LGY,

Why can’t you watch….don’t know if you knew but you can get the games on your phone now with the AtBat app (maybe you could before but I couldn’t). I watched part of the Sox game last night on it and it worked pretty well.

    GB7,

I agree. Crawford really isn’t an opo hitter…..Fenway is good for any hitter but his game just doesn’t set up for it to enhance his like it would others. He’ll come around against RHP, he’s never been very good against lefties and I’d expect that to continue.

    GB7,

    true – re: Crawford.

At the end of the day, it’s his job to get on base and he isn’t. But he’d probably be best utilized as the #2 hitter.

The issue with that is that it forces Pedroia to the #3 (though he’s hitting like one right now) and the rest of the guys down in the order.

If either Ellsbury or Crawford could get on base more often, it would work, but they don’t.

If Youkilis can’t stay healthy or doesn’t start hitting, I could see them dropping Crawford to #2 with Ellsbury #1, Pedroia #3 and Gozalez in the clean-up. For $20 mil a year, Crawford should be volunteering to play center. His defensive skills are wasted in left field in that park and he had a couple of issues already playing the wall.

Truth and don’t be too suprised if Gammons says Buston’s AAA and AA levels are ripe with prospects chomping at the bit to get a callup in behalf of his guitar playing buddy INepstein.

gb, i agree. i thought i read that the angels offered him 20 million less over the same amount of time. easy to see why he went to boston. they may have to force him to play center at some point. ellsbury is not looking good out there. remember, they moved him to left last year when cameron signed.

I like Hamilton as well but that play is all on him…..the ball was right in front of him.

I’m glad they are finally letting Garcia pitch…I know he’s the 5th starter but even 5th starters need work if they are going to be any good. If you have the confidence in him to put him on the team and in the rotation then let him pitch when its his turn and see what you have.

  46. G. Love April 13th, 2011 at 4:22 pm

You know what? I don’t blame Moreno and the Angels for not matching that Boston offer. I’m sorry, but that is ridiculous money for a guy who has never hit 20 HR’s in the season and is not great at hitting lefties. That contract is a franchise killer. He’s a great player when he’s on his game, but for that kind of money and year commitment? Not a great deal.

He’ll come around, but his struggles against lefties are a problem. We can deal with Granderson’s struggles against LHP because he makes 1/2 of Crawford each year and we’re not locked into him for 7. He’s not being paid like a franchise guy.

That said, if Jeter doesn’t hit soon his contract is not going to look too good for us either. I’m still not sure if his deal is really 3 years or 4.

  47. GreenBeret7 April 13th, 2011 at 4:22 pm

Even if Hamilton was on the block, not sure I’d want him on the Yankees. Outstanding talent, but, too many issues and not the least is his ability to stay on the field. Too many ways for him to find trouble in NY.

“We can deal with Granderson’s struggles against LHP because he makes 1/2 of Crawford each year and we’re not locked into him for 7.”

and also because he asked for help and now is respectible against them….and he can hit 30 + homers, and will play CF.

Crawford is the highest paid outfielder in the history of baseball….yet he’s probably not in the top 5 of current outfielders.

  51. Warning Track Power April 13th, 2011 at 4:27 pm

Was is the weather report tonight in The Bronx? 2 consecutive days without Yankees baseball means I am very much in need of a game tonight.

  52. austinmac April 13th, 2011 at 4:27 pm

Noesi would not be starting for the Red Sox for one big reason. Their underperforming starters DiceK and Lackey make large money.

I wonder what Noesi’s role will be. I presume mop up since Colon, and for a while, Garcia are the long men. He will likely not see much of the mound unless the pitching staff implodes.

  53. blake April 13th, 2011 at 4:29 pm

I think the Sox would take Dice K out of the rotation if they had other options that were ready……they can’t do that with Lackey for the same reason the Yankees couldn’t with AJ last year (too much left on the contract)….but if they had Phelps, Noesi, Brackman, etc I think one of them would their their #5 instead of Dice K right now.

  54. RayVT April 13th, 2011 at 4:30 pm

I’m glad Crawford is not in Texas or with the Angels. He is very good, but really messes with RSox’s lineup as they become very top heavy LH if he bats 1, 2 or 3 along with AGone at 4 & Ellsbury up front to utilize his speed. Holiday was a better fit for RSox than Crawford unless Crawford relented & played CF. The green monster plays well for weak LF & not so much for good ones & half hte games are played there. It also neutralizes his speed & arm a bit as average guys can get doubles off the gm & he would have more triples if it was a normal LF and the throws are much shorter.

  55. austinmac April 13th, 2011 at 4:31 pm

    GB,

I am listening to The Last Boy in my car. Interesting even for one who has read many Mickey biographies. Hamilton reminds me of him. Both with amazing physical tools, yet both with injury and substance abuse issues.

I love to watch Hamilton play, but I agree a long term deal with him would be risky on many levels.

  56. pat April 13th, 2011 at 4:32 pm

As I said earlier, addicts are used to blaming others for their behavior so it might be understandable for that to be Hamilton’s knee jerk reaction.

His recovery should allow him to see how silly that is after thinking about it though and he doesn’t seem to see that.

  57. Mike_Boston April 13th, 2011 at 4:32 pm

Shouldn’t be a surprise at all with diva Crawford’s early season struggles. First of all his career average at Fenway is brutal, like .230 ish, 2nd, he straight up said he doesn’t want to play CF or lead off (where does a ball player with no post season track record get off making asinine statements like that?). Just going on that alone I wouldn’t have gone near him if I were Theo. Throw in the fact that he’s the highest paid non power guy in MLB history playing in a fishbowl, do the math, it’s not rocket science.

I said this in the off season. Beltre/Vmart is at best a wash with CC/Agon, but with the year Beltre had it would be tough for either of those new guys to replicate. Take that away and you have the same chumps from last year with no farm backing them up.

  58. hardwired7 April 13th, 2011 at 4:32 pm

    G. Love, Jeter’s 2014 option is $8M, but theoretically could reach $17M if he were to reach all of his incentives (highly unlikely).

If the option isn’t picked up, he gets a $3M buyout.

  59. ac1 April 13th, 2011 at 4:33 pm

That said, if Jeter doesn’t hit soon his contract is not going to look too good for us either. I’m still not sure if his deal is really 3 years or 4.

    ___

I’m telling you if Jeter really declines again, like .220 decline, i really believe he will retire rather than continue to go out there and look weak…

  60. blake April 13th, 2011 at 4:33 pm

Holliday was a great fit for the Yankees as well.

  61. austinmac April 13th, 2011 at 4:36 pm

I would like the AAA pitchers to pitch a few good games before we annoint them major league ready.

  62. blake April 13th, 2011 at 4:36 pm

I believe Boston targeted Werth but when he signed the ridiculous deal with the Nationals that they switched gears and at least in part signed Crawford to keep him away from the Yankees.

  63. pat April 13th, 2011 at 4:37 pm

Sox skipping Lackey. Next start next week in Oakland where he’s had previous success.

  64. austinmac April 13th, 2011 at 4:38 pm

I agree they missed out on Holliday. I was among the few that argued for it, but most said he was overrated from his Colorado stats. Too bad.

Boston, like New York, is unforgiving. Crawford better start hitting or he is in for one very long season.

  65. jacksquat April 13th, 2011 at 4:38 pm

There is no reason Crawford can hit #2 but not #1. I wonder if they put him in CF he would spontaneously combust.

  66. RayVT April 13th, 2011 at 4:38 pm

The RSox messed up by not re-signing VMart. VMart gave them production from a skill position (C) that they badly need. I truly believe Werth was RSox’s 1st choice over Crawford & he makes sense, especially with AGone. But having zero production from the catcher slot either offense or defense makes no sense.

  67. G. Love April 13th, 2011 at 4:39 pm

Thanks hardwired! I was always fuzzy on whether that 4th year was a certainty or not.

And blake, I agree with you and did back when he was free agent that Holliday was a perfect fit for what we do here. Now that the money we had earmarked for Lee didn’t get spent, it’s sad that the Yankees didn’t step up and spend on Holliday. Could you imagine a 2-3-4-5 of Cano, Tex, Arod and Holliday with Gardner leading off with a .370 OBP? It gives me chills just thinking about it.

  69. blake April 13th, 2011 at 4:40 pm

    austinmac,

doing great. Everyone is well. Congrats on that……you can spoil them and send them home ;)

I’m just saying if Boston had other options I’m not sure they’d have Dice K in their rotation right now. Currently they have nothing better (Aceves, Wakefield)…I’m not sure how long his leesh would be if they had AAA guys that they could give shots to. Lackey is a different story because they have a ton of money left on his deal and they need to get him right….Dice K is nearing the end of his, they’d trade him in a heartbeat if anyone would take him.

  70. RayVT April 13th, 2011 at 4:42 pm

    blake April 13th, 2011 at 4:33 pm

I agree Blake, but the Yanks I believe had their eye on Crawford & Lee. They got Crawford light (or equal) in Gardner & we all know what happened to Lee. If Yanks signed Holiday, they probably don’t trade for Granderson or maybe they would have traded Gardner.

It would be a nightmare to pitch to. Holliday signed for less money than both Crawford and Werth and he’s a better player than both. It’s over and done with but it does appear the Yanks passed on both he and Dan Haren because they were waiting for Lee….thems the breaks I guess.

  77. austinmac April 13th, 2011 at 4:44 pm

    RayVT,

You may be right on the consequences of signing Holliday, but Holliday is clearly better than both in my opinion.

  79. blake April 13th, 2011 at 4:45 pm

  90. CB April 13th, 2011 at 4:51 pm

Jesus Montero is absolutely crushing the ball in AAA. The pitcher’s he’s faced just aren’t able to find any real weaknesses. His plate coverage is just tremendous. And he has so much bat speed while keeping his bat so level and in the zone for so long that there’s just no consistent way for the pitchers to prevent him from doing damage, never mind getting him out.

His at bats are just dominant. He is hitting the ball so hard and so often it’s really been something.

He’s picked up right where he left off last season in AAA. Still needs some work on his pitch selection and his swing is so level that he may need to adjust how he handles pitches low in the zone.

But he just looks fantastic in Scranton. He can flat out hit. He’s a guy who you can build a line up around for a decade.

they’d be smart to trade Iglesias immediately while some people still might think he’s a legit top 50 prospect… but considering how badly they need a SS, they won’t.

  111. CB April 13th, 2011 at 5:02 pm

    blake,

I’m sure you’ve been very busy with the new one. Montero has just looked fantastic. He steps into the box with a general sense that the pitcher cannot get him out and he is going to hit the tar out of the ball.

And he hits the ball so hard so often.

I think he may have more bat speed than Cabrera.

He really does bring back memories of Frank Thomas.

    Mike_Boston,

Barca’s won 5 in a row. There’s no way they are going to win all 4 or avoid defeat. I like your prediction 2-1-1.

I think they will win the copa and they will advance through the CL.

Anything can happen and Madrid are very dangerous particularly on the counter attack. They has so much speed.

That said, I think they are going to have a difficult time defending Barca and also with handling Barca’s press. And they aren’t set up to sit deep and absorb pressure like Mourhino’s teams in the past have been designed to do.

Barca does have problems on their defensive line due to injuries and that will help Madrid a great deal.

Also, to your question the other day. I do think Barca and Madrid are the two best teams in the world. I’d rate Manchester United 3rd, Borrussia Dortmund 4th, and Arsenal 5th. Shakthar Donetsk could also an excellent team and up there as well despite the recent result with Barca.

  125. blake April 13th, 2011 at 5:13 pm

If Montero is destorying AAA and Posada isn’t hitting then I could see them calling him up later to catch a little and DH some……I don’t know how it will unfold, I just can’t see them leaving him down all year if he continues to dominate at SWB

I don’t see any team taking on Crawford’s deal, Bard is a good chip but the Sox need him, Buchholtz is a good chip but the Sox need him, and nobody wants Papelbon…..Iglesias might be a good chip but he’s supposedly their future SS and there are questions about whether he can hit.

Yes it’s going to be immensely exciting. What a crazy few weeks. It’s going to be one of the most unique experiences in recent sports history. Let’s of frayed nerves all over the world.

Regarding the prestige of the trophies – easiest answer to that is that the Copa is clearly third. To be honest, much of the Copa’s value is what it would mean to complete a Treble.

People will differ some on the La Liga or the CL I suppose. But I think the league title is more important and more meaningful due to it’s context and competition over time. Winning the CL without the league would be a mixed feeling.

The defense tried to argue that Hoskins and her brother were in cahoots to take Bonds down, but Hoskins stuck to her story. The reason this is important is that one of the perjury charges against Bonds is that he denied ever being injected by anyone other than his personal doctor, and Anderson wasn’t his personal doctor. It doesn’t matter what was being injected (and Hoskins didn’t know for sure); all that matters is whether the injection took place.

That’s possible. But it’s difficult to predict the future or to know what their plans are for him behind the plate.

I really don’t see what the dire evaluations of him behind the plate are driven by. Success for him behind the plate is roughly to be as good as Mike Piazza was. And from what I see that’s very much in his capabilities. He has a much better arm than Piazza to boot.

    So we’ll see.

All I know is that if I were to rank the players in the yankees organization based on pure talent (and that’s talent separated from track record) at the plate Alex would be first and Montero would be second.

In general that would be around 40-50 games into the season I suppose. I think that’s a decent run of games to where you know what’s going on with the big league club.

I mostly just wanted him to get his swing down and get into a rhythm before sending him up to face tougher pitching.

“Not so sure about that. Orlando Cepeda is in…and he had some history of drug charges.”

Was he convicted, what was the exact charge, and was he convicted before he was voted in. All matter.

    **********

To me, worth every penny. Happy he was convicted.

Yes–he served time before elected into HOF.

In 1975 Cepeda was arrested for picking up a shipment of marijuana at the San Juan airport in Puerto Rico. Officials say Cepeda was caught with between 60-125 pounds of the drug. He was sentenced to five years in prison and served 10 months. That drug conviction kept Cepeda out of the baseball Hall of Fame until 1999.

And Fergusin Jenkins also had some troubles that delayed his entry…but eventually got in. Bonds will get in eventually as well IMO.

I don’t know that picking up marijuana at an airport or even using marijuana has ever been linked to an ability to play better. P E D

Haven’t you ever heard of a high batting average?
