Lineup, plus surgery likely for Feliciano

Pedro Feliciano has a torn shoulder capsule. He’s going for a second opinion on Monday, but right now it seems season-ending surgery is likely. He’s been told that if he has surgery now, he’ll be ready for spring training in 2012. I’ll have more when I’m out of the clubhouse.

Brett Gardner LF
Derek Jeter SS
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Jorge Posada DH
Curtis Granderson CF
Russell Martin C

    sucks.

    Oh well!

  2. YsGuy April 14th, 2011 at 3:51 pm

i was at the stadium for phils first start i was told he didnt hit 90 once.

last time i watched on gameday and they had him at a steady 91, although pitch trax apparently had him at 90.

so i dont expect him to be popping it at 95 tongiht. but if he gets up to 92-93, he will still need to rely more on location and secondary pitches than he usuallly does.

i think its alot more important for him to go 5 or 6, even if its rocky, then to freak if he’s not throwing 95

    Another Cashman blunder…….

i was at the stadium for phils first start i was told he didnt hit 90 once.

That was one of my favorite nights in sec39… chanting “Your name’s Vernon” for like an hour made me forget about Phil getting rocked…

    Hilarious.

  6. YsGuy April 14th, 2011 at 3:55 pm

    what’s a feliciano?

    never heard of him…

  7. Jerkface April 14th, 2011 at 3:56 pm

YsGuy I don’t know what this pitch trax you’re talking about is, but you don’t seem to have a handle on what Hughes velocity is or what it is being measured at in the game.

Pitch FX had hughes throwing 9 4-seams against Boston, avg mph 89, max 91.
vs Detroit 40, avg mph 89 max 91

His cutter avg 83 max 90 vs the tigers, avg 87 max 90 vs the red sox

  8. ericns1 April 14th, 2011 at 3:56 pm

    Give Martin some rest!

    WICKED!!!!

We found our replacement player for the DL position. He’s no Nick Johnson but he will do.

I wonder what his VORDLP is….???

  10. Jerkface April 14th, 2011 at 3:56 pm

Hughes doesn’t need to throw 95, he needs to average 92

  11. Patrick April 14th, 2011 at 3:57 pm

I think a lot of his 4-seamers have been classified as cutters by PitchFX due to reduced velocity..

  12. YsGuy April 14th, 2011 at 3:57 pm

seriously, when i heard the yankees singed feliciano, i thought “is his arm still attached?” i knew he had pitched a gazillion innings for the mets the past few years. so i had no expectations of the guy contributing.

  13. RadioKev April 14th, 2011 at 3:58 pm

Paid registration is not the way you kill trolls on the Internet. That’s a silly suggestion.

Really the simple thing is to use only Facebook, Twitter, or other personal social media logins to post under. Strip away usernames and just use your personal Facebook account. That will make a person generally more accountable for their word. Arguments still continue, but I believe it does cut down trolling significantly.

Or allow comments to be hidden due to low ratings. Thumbs up, thumbs down.

  14. LGY April 14th, 2011 at 3:59 pm

    Give Martin some rest!

Did he not rest on Monday and Tuesday?

He has played in one game this week.

  17. The Hand of Satan April 14th, 2011 at 3:59 pm

So the brindge jumpers and cliff-divers will be out if Phil as a bad outing..sad.

    One word: Pavano.

I wouldn’t have let him toss a salad let alone an important game when he was here. You never know what is in store for later.

  18. Patrick April 14th, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Did he not rest on Monday and Tuesday?

He has played in one game this week.

I go into a coma on the days the Yankees don’t play.

  19. RayVT April 14th, 2011 at 4:00 pm

It appears Phil has been in the same zone on his pitches and similar speeds. He needs better location and a differential on pitching speeds to throw the hitters off balance. He has fallen in love with his cutter & tossed his change-up. He needs both of them as well as his 4 seam Fastball.

AJ threw 16 change-ups yesterday. If Hughes throws a similar % & he keeps the ball down in the zone he will have much more success IMO.

  20. YsGuy April 14th, 2011 at 4:00 pm

so if phil averages 92-93 and he was throwing 90 according to pitch trax, velocity wasnt the only issue. i think he was freaking about the fastball and not pitching with what he had.

phil’s smart, we will see better pitching and better velocity tonight. just dont expect too much in one shot.

  21. Patrick April 14th, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Ok here’s the solution, only posters that have been verified on twitter can post on lohud! Perfect!

  23. YsGuy April 14th, 2011 at 4:02 pm

martin is quite rested im sure, but if you’re just jonesing for molina, you must have other issues…. :)

  24. Jerkface April 14th, 2011 at 4:02 pm

so if phil averages 92-93 and he was throwing 90 according to pitch trax, velocity wasnt the only issue. i think he was freaking about the fastball and not pitching with what he had.

Dude what are you talking about? What is pitch trax? Phil’s normal fastball velocity is 92.5 max of 94-95. Right now its 89, max of 91.

  25. LGY April 14th, 2011 at 4:03 pm

Phil has sat 88-90 in both his starts. Iirc he has hit 91 less than a handful of times.

  26. YsGuy April 14th, 2011 at 4:03 pm

i’d never join any club that would have me as a member…

    A. Jones will get in the line-up this weekend vs the rangers. 2 lefties are scheduled to start tomorrow and Saturday.

  30. YsGuy April 14th, 2011 at 4:05 pm

everybody has his velocity different apparently.

no matter anyway, phil will be phine.

  31. Jerkface April 14th, 2011 at 4:06 pm

Phil Hughes has thrown 19 pitches that register above 89 mph. And 2 that have topped 90.

    1 91.9 mph fastball, 1 91.1 mph cutter.

  32. Joe from Long Island April 14th, 2011 at 4:07 pm

I just don’t see why Cash/Yanks signing Feliciano is such a disastrous problem. Hasn’t worked out for this year, that’s for sure. But, what bad thing has happened because of it? Nothing, as far as I can see. It didn’t keep them from adding Soriano, or Martin. It’s not responsible for Jesus Montero pressing in ST, or anything else. I don’t see it as having kept them from making any other move.

Sure ain’t responsible for the high parking rates in the garages.

So, they took a chance and it didn’t work out. There are no sure things in life.

    Big deal.

  33. Jerkface April 14th, 2011 at 4:08 pm

everybody has his velocity different apparently.

Everybody? Pitch FX is one thing and it doesn’t change. The only other thing you could be talking about is the stadium radar gun. Which I wouldn’t trust.

  34. Jerkface April 14th, 2011 at 4:09 pm

I just don’t see why Cash/Yanks signing Feliciano is such a disastrous problem.

Not a disastrous problem, but signing him meant not signing a different lefty and now this one will likely never throw a pitch for the yankees.

It was a joke dumb dumb

  36. Irreverent Discourse April 14th, 2011 at 4:09 pm

Joe from LI – Exactly, it’s not a big deal at all. People trying to fault Cashman for it are equally as lost. For the money there was no better reliever available, so it woul dhave involved overpaying for a worse reliever or REALLY overpaying (twice counting soriano) for one of the more studly relievers.

  37. Joe from Long Island April 14th, 2011 at 4:10 pm

‘face – is there a rule that says they can’t have signed three lefties?

    ——

91 is like Phil’s 95 last year. When he reality rears back and let’s loose all he can hit is 91.

His “true max” seems to be 90.

People are deluding themselves if they think he can be successful at that velo.

  40. Jerkface April 14th, 2011 at 4:11 pm

‘face – is there a rule that says they can’t have signed three lefties?

Yes, something about there being a 25 man roster.

  41. YsGuy April 14th, 2011 at 4:11 pm

here’s my sources, the guys in my section at the stadium were all over the scoreboard and they told me he never hit 90 the first outing. they may have missed a pitch or two but they said they were all over it. so my first source is the radar gun at the stadium.

the second game i watched on gameday. they had him consistently at 91. obviously you are going by something else. i have no argument. i have no idea where you got your info or why there is any discrepancy. and i dont think it makes much difference.

he still has to be able to pitch with what he has when he takes the mound.

BloggingBombers Cashman compared Feliciano’s injury to Chien-Ming Wang’s shoulder injury.

    RadioKev,

It’s easy to impersonate someone on facebook and especially twitter.
    —————————-

I mean, you don’t have to get into details, but how do you do that? You’d have to hack someone’s facebook or twitter account, which no offense to this blog, I imagine is much harder to done than to hack an account on here.

The point is, by having someone log in through facebook or twitter, you avoid all the trolls that don’t know how to hack accounts. By keeping someone to their own name, you keep someone to their word, which most people are less willing to throw around.

  47. Wave Your Hat April 14th, 2011 at 4:14 pm

  49. blake April 14th, 2011 at 4:15 pm

Hughes was scared to death to throw a 4 seamer in his last start. You don’t need to see a radar gun to know he’s not right….the hitter’s were telling him and everyone watching that. He’s not getting swings and misses and the ball is flat. The velocity is one thing….the lack of life and command on the pitches compounds the problem.

I’m hoping to see improvement tonight.

  53. Joe from Long Island April 14th, 2011 at 4:17 pm

‘face – I thought the idea was to have better players than anyone else. If they wanted to have three lefty relievers on the staff, if it was felt that they were good and worth it – why not?

At one time, you only had one closer. Now, the the fashion is to have two closers, for the 8th and the 9th. Having Mariano didn’t keep them from spending big bucks to get Soriano.

  54. YsGuy April 14th, 2011 at 4:17 pm

i can guarentee you that i saw phil register 3 consecutive pitches at 91 in that game. whether they later changed that or whether something else happened to create a discrepancy, i cant say but i definitly saw him throw three 91 mph pitches in a row on gameday in that outing.

listen im not jerking you around (pun intended) i cant explain it but i saw it and he hit 91 alot more than 2x. i dont believe any radar guns acually, just telling you what i saw when i watched that game.

  55. Erin April 14th, 2011 at 4:19 pm

JackCurryYES Cashman told Torre story because of criticism he got for saying Mets abused Feliciano (and Yanks still signed him)

Sure, you could go register accounts with similar names, but it’s an extra step. That weeds out a few losers that would think to troll a website. I don’t really think most people troll if it’s not easy.

  57. Jerkface April 14th, 2011 at 4:19 pm

At one time, you only had one closer. Now, the the fashion is to have two closers, for the 8th and the 9th. Having Mariano didn’t keep them from spending big bucks to get Soriano.

There is limited roster space. They needed 5 starters 1 long man and then the pen which already had Logan, Rivera, Robertson, and Joba in it.

There isn’t room for 3 lefties unless you’re getting rid of one of Robertson and Joba, and Robertson already handles lefties and Joba theoretically should, Soriano does, and Rivera does.

The opportunity cost of signing Feliciano is that it was unrealistic to have a third lefty.

  71. LGY April 14th, 2011 at 4:24 pm

The Yankees spent big money Marte and Feliciano for a reason.

Having one or two shut down LH relievers is important in the AL East and especially important in the playoffs.

Especially since Boston is so LH heavy now.

With Feliciano dead Yankee fans better get used to seeing Boone Logan in big spots.

It is not disastrous but it weakens the team and it was a stupid contract from the start.

As a rule (there are some exceptions), left handed relievers who can get out righties are called starters or closers.

Never thought of that much, but it’s a pretty true statement.

If Logan can get back to his post call up form the Yankees are fine in the BP.

If not, they probably need to find a LOOGY.

what that’s not a big enough sample for ya? I’m just afraid last year the stars were aligned for Booney…..he can’t get the ball over the plate a great majority of the time and nothing irrigates me more than a reliever that comes in and can’t throw strikes….especially if they are being brought in to get one hitter out.

‘face – I definitely understand your point about the pitching staff. My point is that they took a chance, and it didn’t work out. I really don’t see it as a big deal. Sure, it would be great if they had two effective – key word, effective – lefties. But, the important thing is to get the batters out.

I really don’t see it as a big issue.

“The guy has regressed and if he can’t throw low to mid 90?s, he’ll be out of baseball before you can say Jack Armstrong. He doesn’t have the stuff to survive without an above average major league fastball.”

    g.love

i caught armstrong the winter before his all star start for the national league and he has the straightest four seem fastball possible. it was 96mph + and he commanded it really well. he had a decent slider.

teh really funny thing is that one day tony cloninger, our pitching coach, came by and showed him the grip for a split finger fastball. jack threw one and the bottom just dropped out of it and bounced a few feet in front of the plate and got by me getting the ball all wet on the grass. ( the bullpen was on the field at mckechnie field in bradenton). tony said to do it again. same thing. the nastiest split finger ever comes in knee high strike level and just dives to the dirt and gets by me again.

jack is all pissed off because i could only get two brand new balls for him to throw ( he wasn’t in our organization)and now they’re all wet.

he looks at tony and says” i can’t throw that $$%%##ing pitch because it moves to #$%%^^ing much”.

true story.jack was not real baseball smart.

hughes on the other hand is smart. and he has lots of natural fastball movement. he doesn’t need to be 95mph but 92-93mph would sure be nice.

I really don’t see it as a big issue.

Its not a big issue. We agree, but taking a chance and not working out sucks. Thats like… everything a GM does. you want it to work out more often than not! This isn’t going to sink the Yankees but they could be in a much better position had they not signed Feliciano. At this point Cash is probably going to trade for another LOOGY at some point, and then sign that guy to an extension as well!

You want guys who get batters out, but by signing Feliciano they not only did not get that, but their 40 man now has another dead spot. And simply putting him on the 60 day DL stinks because room has to be cleared at the end of the year.

Not a real problem with betances and Banuelos. They’ll go on the 7 day DL. One other problem with the baseballs is they;ve both pitched on cold, wet days and makes for slick baseballs. Strictly friction burns. Maybe not true blisters but rather hot spots.

Feliciano was healthy when he signed and healthy when he pitched in his 4 games. 0 walks, 6 strikeouts in 4 innings and one run sounds healthy to me. Obviously Cashman had some concerns because of all of the left handed minor league pitchers he signed or picked up on waivers.

  146. BoJo April 14th, 2011 at 5:21 pm

There is one lefty that I called for last winter that still may be available…Bruce Chen only cost 1 year $2M salary. I thought he would have been a better acquisition than Feli.

  147. BD (Boston Dave) April 14th, 2011 at 5:21 pm

    tough day in Yankee land.

Losing Feliciano for the season is a big loss. It’ll end up costing them a prospect or two – there’s little doubt that Cashman will look to acquire a lefty bullpen arm at the deadline now.

Sure, Banuelos could help but it doesn’t seem Cashman-like to simply assume Banuelos will succeed in that role and leave the team empty-handed if he doesn’t.

If this team is going to make the playoffs and have a chance, they should have a guy who can do what Marte did for them in the ’09 playoffs.

Great signing, Cash. I just heard Kay say that Cashman again couldn’t keep his mouth shut – he’s apparently thrown Torre under the bus for his use of Proctor and co. Fantastic. Kay and La Greca are right – even if Cash is just doing this because he wants out, how many teams want their GM to babble this much? Enough!

I had to leave for work earlier, but one more thing on Phil – I think it’s a shame that some people have to assume the worst in terms of what it means for Phil if he were to be sent to Tampa. It’s not supposed to be a punishment – it would be to enable him to fix what’s wrong and make him a better pitcher. If he’s to have a long term future with this organization – or any organization for that matter – then you need to see beyond a few starts (and also, the Yankees can’t keep giving games away that Phil starts) and realize that it could be best for him.

    hacking? media hyped fiction.

Here is what happened: Crazy guy becomes best friends with someone, gets access to the lohud fantasy league, does other kinds of trickery to get people give them email addresses / names. Then uses very easy means from that information to get more.

Its not complicated. Don’t become best friends with crazy people, its simple. Someone decided to team up with said crazy person and started this mess.

    _______

That is how it started, Jerkface. But don’t blame Trisha. I have dependable ways of finding out everyone’s information. GB7, you, Betsy, and Pat M were not in fantasy league, but I received the information of all 3 of you. Plus most other posters on this site. IP addresses, email addresses, etc.

Too soon in the season for teams to wave white flags and make bullpen lefthanders available unless Cashman makes an offer that can’t be refused.

  181. joeman April 14th, 2011 at 5:42 pm

wonder if they can talk to the Braves & Billy Wagner about coming here…

  182. Betsy April 14th, 2011 at 5:42 pm

LGY, he can’t succeed at that velocity because he doesn’t have any pitches other than his FB – but why is this a surprise?

So it wasn’t even the Mets’ “abuse” that caused Feliciano’s injury……..Sucks but with shoulder surgery you never know. We can’t count on him for next year either.

The Mets’ abuse made him more prone to injury..

Randy, if Phil is as smart as his rep says, he’ll commit to improving and using his curve and his change.

    “Two worlds collide
    Rival nations
    It’s a primitive clash
    Venting years of frustrations
    Bravely we hope
    Against all hope
There is so much at stake
    Seems our freedom’s up
    Against the ropes
    Does the crowd understand?
    Is it East versus West
    Or man against man
    Can any nation stand alone

    In the burning Heart
    Just about to burst
    There’s a quest for answers
    An unquenchable thirst
    In the darkest night
    Rising like a spire
    In the burning heart
    The unmistakable fire
    In the burning heart”

one thing i DO like is the consistency in the lineup.

I like that is is roughly the same every day, adds consistency…

Ask the sox how changing their lineup everyday is working…

  200. YsGuy April 14th, 2011 at 6:07 pm

  206. GreenBeret7 April 14th, 2011 at 6:17 pm

Ray, that’s the ’62 Mets all over again. first game, it was all three outfielders. 2nd game, it’s the infield and catchers. That’s the ugliest defense in baseball.
