Alexi Ogando P

Time/TV: 8:05, ESPN

Umpires: Fieldin Culbreath HP, Adrian Johnson 1B, Gary Cederstrom 2B, Lance Barksdale 3B

Weather: 57 degrees, mostly cloudy

Happy anniversary: Today’s the 60th anniversary of Mickey Mantle’s first big-league game and Bob Sheppard’s first game as the Yankees’ PA announcer.

Pen authoring good relief: The Yankees’ bullpen has a 1.96 ERA over the last six games.

Cano heating up: Robby Cano comes in with a team-season-best eight-game hitting streak, batting .364 with five doubles, two homers and eight RBI over this stretch.

Oh Ogando: Alexi Ogando is the only pitcher since they started playing with a “live ball” in 1920 to win his first two starts in a season while going at least six innings, giving up two hits or less and yielding no runs.

Update, 8:04: We talked to Alex Rodriguez just before the clubhouse closed. Here’s his quote on whether there’s a possibility of a DL stint after hurting his lower back/oblique and coming out after six yesterday: “I hope not. I’d like to think I pulled myself out hopefully with perfect timing. I felt that if I went out there and took a violent swing, I could have put myself at risk for a couple of weeks.”

Update, 8:17: Not a good beginning for Sabathia. Two-run homer to the left-field seats for Adrian Beltre in the first.

Update, 8:21: Looking forward to seeing Ogando after his great start to the season. It’s first season in the rotation for the Rangers after working in relief when he came up last year.

Update, 8:25: 1-2-3 first for Ogando.

Update, 8:38: Nine-game hitting streak now for Cano, with his fourth homer landing in the right-field seats — 2-1 in the second.

Update, 8:46: You can see Eric Chavez still has that Gold Glove touch at third. Nice pick to start the double play here in the third.

Update, 8:54: Brett Gardner talked pregame about possibly tweaking his patient approach since he has been falling behind in counts. So he just grounded that 1-0 pitch into a 6-6-3 double play after Russell Martin got hit to start the third.

Update, 9:03: Beltre is doing some damage. That RBI single make it 3-1 in the fourth. Also, it has started to rain. There was a sharp bolt of lightning across the sky, plus thunder.

Update, 9:14: The rain has lightened. Ogando has not. He has a one-hitter through four, up 3-1.

Update, 9:21: Nice work by Sabathia to get out of a first-and-second, one-out problem after his bad throw to first.

Update, 9:29: A base hit sighting. Two hits now for the Yankees after that one-out single by Chavez in the fifth. But Nelson Cruz just robbed Posada with a diving catch in right.

Update, 9:32: Two-run homer for Russell Martin – 3-3. Had a 1-on-1 chat with him pregame for an upcoming story about him trying to reestablish himself. He’s doing a good job so far. That was homer No. 4. That also gives the Yankees a franchise-record 26 homers through 14 games.

Update, 9:38: Sabathia can’t handle Beltre. RBI double, 4-3, Texas, in the sixth. The $96 million man is 3 for 3 with all four RBI.

Update, 9:49: Sabathia gets out of the inning. That could be it for him. He’s above 100 pitches. We’ll see. David Robertson had been warming up.

Update, 9:56: It’s a good thing for the Yankees they have this kind of power. The long ball is carrying them again.  Curtis Granderson two-run shot, 5-4 Yankees.

Update, 10:04: Sabathia is still in for the seventh. But Joba is warming. Sabathia is at 112 pitches with one out. And now he’s done. Joba is in.

Update, 10:12: Close play at first. Russell Martin threw out Elvis Andrus. First-base coach Gary Pettis has been ejected by Adrian Johnson for arguing the call. Runner on second, two outs.

Update, 10:14: CC now winless in four starts. Joba blows the lead. Michael Young’s ground-rule double to right-center ties it at 5-5.

Update, 10:21: It’s raining again here in the last of the seventh.

Update, 10:27: Ogando is done. Arthur Rhodes is in, first and second, one out.

Update, 10:34: Rafael Soriano is on for the eighth. We’ll see if he can bounce back from yesterday, and pitch well when it’s below 60 degrees.

Update, 10:41: One single and three outs for Soriano – 5-5, last of the eighth.

Update, 10:55: Chavez comes through, two-out RBI single, and it’s 6-5.

Update, 10:57: Bases loaded. Pedro Strop is coming in to pitch to Martin.

Update, 11:03: Strop did his job. Now Mariano for the ninth.

Update, 11:13: Yankees win, 6-5.

Yikes, I hope Arod doesn’t have to go on the DL. That would stink, after such a hot start….

  2. Jeff in Canada April 17th, 2011 at 8:07 pm

Not sure if it has been noted already, but Jeter on “Extreme Home Makeover” tonight. Looks like a great story.

  3. syd_cash April 17th, 2011 at 8:09 pm

    go CC

  4. BBFan April 17th, 2011 at 8:11 pm

Who would have thought Knicks will lead by 12 at halftime with Melo playing hardly 3 minutes in the first quarter due to foul trouble….

  5. Tom in N.J. April 17th, 2011 at 8:11 pm

Bunch of crazed dogs in the last post…Sheesh…

  6. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 17th, 2011 at 8:11 pm

It appears to me that the players are probably pretty sick of the roll call. But whatever.

    GO YANKS!

  7. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 17th, 2011 at 8:12 pm

    GO KNICKS!!!!!

  8. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 17th, 2011 at 8:12 pm

Bunch of crazed dogs in the bleachers too!

  9. syd_cash April 17th, 2011 at 8:12 pm

the roll call is nice, but seems like it is slightly distracting to the players

  10. JM April 17th, 2011 at 8:13 pm

Let’s go Yankees! The Knickerbockers looked great in the first half….

  11. Salliedogs7 April 17th, 2011 at 8:13 pm

    Go CC. Go Yanks.

  12. randy l. April 17th, 2011 at 8:14 pm

i liked bobby valentine way better when he was in japan.

  13. RS April 17th, 2011 at 8:14 pm

    ESPN jinxed us

  14. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 17th, 2011 at 8:15 pm

Andrus is quick. I’m not a big fan of Yankees Sunday night baseball.

  15. Betsy April 17th, 2011 at 8:15 pm

Randy, I liked him best when he was in disguise, lol

  16. YsGuy April 17th, 2011 at 8:15 pm

cano has to go get that ball.

  17. BD (Boston Dave) April 17th, 2011 at 8:15 pm

really interesting report/video on Ogando here:

    http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/.....exi-ogando

kinda cool story how Ogando ended up as a pitcher for Texas.

  18. blake April 17th, 2011 at 8:15 pm

Martin yanked the throw but Robbie needs to catch that ball.

  19. randy l. April 17th, 2011 at 8:15 pm

    throwing error?

it wasn’t a good throw, but robbie has to catch that ball.

  20. SAS April 17th, 2011 at 8:15 pm

Did anyone notice that the famous STEVE Swisher is playing.

  21. GreenBeret7 April 17th, 2011 at 8:16 pm

Looks like Sabathia has to fight the texas hitters and his own catcher tonight. He’s made 3 really bad throws this year.

  22. blake April 17th, 2011 at 8:16 pm

    Wow….ring him up.

  23. randy l. April 17th, 2011 at 8:16 pm

    haha blake

    great minds think alike

  24. SAS April 17th, 2011 at 8:16 pm

    Trisha,

Congrats…good week. If Garcia had been activated and not on the bench, we would have tied.

  25. gumbyandpokey April 17th, 2011 at 8:16 pm

Cano has been very lazy defensively this season.

  26. BD (Boston Dave) April 17th, 2011 at 8:16 pm

    lets see that curveball CC

  27. Betsy April 17th, 2011 at 8:17 pm

Cano hasn’t played good D at all this year so far

  28. JM April 17th, 2011 at 8:17 pm

    SAS,

Yes. Is that Nick’s kid brother? ;)

  29. blake April 17th, 2011 at 8:17 pm

    Crap.

  30. randy l. April 17th, 2011 at 8:17 pm

    beltre is a good player.

i think the red sox didn’t realize what they gave up.

  31. syd_cash April 17th, 2011 at 8:17 pm

wow that came out of nowhere….CC was looking so good

  32. BD (Boston Dave) April 17th, 2011 at 8:18 pm

    horrible pitch

that’s probably the worst spot to throw it to beltre

    oh well, CC will recover

  33. gumbyandpokey April 17th, 2011 at 8:18 pm

Again, Sabathia can’t finish off hitters.

    Beckett is better.

  34. Bryan April 17th, 2011 at 8:18 pm

    Non ace ace

  35. BoJo April 17th, 2011 at 8:18 pm

    OH NO–WE’RE DOOMED!

(credit to Buzzkill for the slogan)

  36. gumbyandpokey April 17th, 2011 at 8:18 pm

CC is just not “ace” caliber.

  37. djsunyc April 17th, 2011 at 8:18 pm

the rangers are like the new angels for us…

  38. Niblick April 17th, 2011 at 8:18 pm

How long are we going to keep kidding ourselves that Martin is a good catcher?

  39. gumbyandpokey April 17th, 2011 at 8:19 pm

“Aces” do not take their team out of the game immediately, which CC does.

  40. JM April 17th, 2011 at 8:19 pm

Cue the “CC is not an ace” posts….

  41. NYY fan in NH April 17th, 2011 at 8:19 pm

Now CC for the second game in a row doesn’t have his stuff.

  42. gumbyandpokey April 17th, 2011 at 8:19 pm

    Nice job CC, you dud.

  43. GreenBeret7 April 17th, 2011 at 8:19 pm

martin missed the target by nearly 5 feet. The throw was supposed to be to the 1st base side and he wasn’t even close.

  44. blake April 17th, 2011 at 8:20 pm

Probably should’ve broke out that curve to Beltre…..man those feel like cheap runs.

  45. Carl April 17th, 2011 at 8:20 pm

Stupid pitch is what that was.

  46. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 17th, 2011 at 8:20 pm

“CC is just not “ace” caliber.”

Yeah, and Garcia shouldn’t be pitching for the Yankees.

    Any other early-game brilliant deductions?

  47. gumbyandpokey April 17th, 2011 at 8:20 pm

CC gives up more runs in the first inning than Beckett gave up in his last two starts.

  48. Jerkface April 17th, 2011 at 8:20 pm

“Aces” do not take their team out of the game immediately, which CC does.

    CC’s 1st inning ERA = 3.10
    Roy Halladays 1st inning ERA = 3.70

  49. Betsy April 17th, 2011 at 8:20 pm

Right, because CC was so bad in Boston……..

  50. gumbyandpokey April 17th, 2011 at 8:20 pm

    Any other deductions?

Just that CC makes it look so effortless, doesn’t he?

  51. Jerkface April 17th, 2011 at 8:20 pm

    Josh Becketts 1st inning ERA = 4.27 :(

  52. syd_cash April 17th, 2011 at 8:21 pm

umm yeah so CC has been pitching well this season according to his ERA so chill with the crazy comments

sidenote: I wish you could ignore certain user where there posts don’t show up. That would be nice

  53. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 17th, 2011 at 8:21 pm

“Now CC for the second game in a row doesn’t have his stuff.”

Isn’t the report on CC that he starts out slow every year?

  54. gumbyandpokey April 17th, 2011 at 8:21 pm

Who wouldn’t trade CC for Halladay?

    I would.

  55. GreenBeret7 April 17th, 2011 at 8:21 pm

Well, it was a good evening until the trolling daisies showed up.

  56. Gary April 17th, 2011 at 8:21 pm

  58. Bryan April 17th, 2011 at 8:22 pm

hmmm no one hits more ground balls than Jeter

    Interesting

  59. BBFan April 17th, 2011 at 8:23 pm

Looks like we have too many trolls here today…..

  60. BoJo April 17th, 2011 at 8:23 pm

I expect a couple of homers tonight…Grandy might be one of them.

  61. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 17th, 2011 at 8:23 pm

Looks like “mypalfish” has shown up with a new troll screen name. Bye gumballandpokey, you tool!

  62. gumbyandpokey April 17th, 2011 at 8:23 pm

    It’s not BS.

    Beckett is better.

And Jeter really made the guy work.

  63. blake April 17th, 2011 at 8:23 pm

Probably the best swing of the season for Jeter and was against a hard throwing righty.

  64. BBFan April 17th, 2011 at 8:24 pm

Ogando will taste his first loss today.
    Go Yanks! Go Knicks!

  65. YsGuy April 17th, 2011 at 8:24 pm

i’m breaking my rule and chatting on here during the game, i dont know why. but im already having second thoughts…

  66. BoJo April 17th, 2011 at 8:24 pm

    Trishy–

    How can you tell?

  67. CB April 17th, 2011 at 8:24 pm

So far CC’s having some issues similar to what he was going through at the beginning of his first year with the yanks.

He’s not consistent with his fastball command because his front side mechanics aren’t right. His front side is opening up too early and he’s getting under the ball. It seems to be most pronounced with his fastball.

  68. BoJo April 17th, 2011 at 8:25 pm

BTW Trishy–If you have SAS e-mail address, could you please send her my contact info? Faster than trying to reach Chad.

  69. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 17th, 2011 at 8:25 pm

“gumbyandpokey = mypalfish. Ignore the ugly troll until it disappears.

  70. gumbyandpokey April 17th, 2011 at 8:25 pm

“Looks like “mypalfish” has shown up with a new troll screen name. Bye gumballandpokey, you tool!”

Nice guess, but wrong. You’re wrong about many things, though, so it’s no surprise.

You can already tell this Rangers pitcher is better than Sabathia, too.

  71. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 17th, 2011 at 8:26 pm

Bojo, because he’s STUPID enough to use the same dullwitted lines that he used as mypalfish.

  72. blake April 17th, 2011 at 8:26 pm

    Don’t feed the trolls.

  73. gumbyandpokey April 17th, 2011 at 8:26 pm

That’s the way you attack hitters.

Instead the number one Yankee starter nibbles and nibbles and nibbles.

  74. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 17th, 2011 at 8:27 pm

    gumbyandpokey April 17th, 2011 at 8:25 pm

    ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

  75. gumbyandpokey April 17th, 2011 at 8:27 pm

No Trisha…YOU were the one who said how effortless CC made it look. And CC is many things, but “effortless” is certainly not one of them.

  76. trisha - true pinstriped blue April 17th, 2011 at 8:27 pm

    blake, agree.

  84. blake April 17th, 2011 at 8:31 pm

    Very nice turn.

  85. Salliedogs7 April 17th, 2011 at 8:31 pm

    Nice DP.

  86. BoJo April 17th, 2011 at 8:31 pm

I liked this Ogundo kid from the first time I saw him pitch last year…it will be interesting to see how long into the season he can be effective before he tires.

Trishy–Don’t be afraid to trade him later in year…

  87. GreenBeret7 April 17th, 2011 at 8:31 pm

Regardless of tonight, the Yanks will get to Toronto with no worse than a 1 game lead in the East

  88. CompassRosy April 17th, 2011 at 8:32 pm

    Hey Sis ~

I’ve been trying to reach you via email for awhile but haven’t heard back.

  91. YsGuy April 17th, 2011 at 8:32 pm

i dont mind the trolls so much i just ignore them. my only thing is there should be some kind of a rule that they have to read everyone’s posts when the yankees put up a 5 spot and the game is all but over. not one of them ever has the balls to stick around and take it what they know they deserve.

Isn’t the report on CC that he starts out slow every year?

    ————————-
CC was a better pitcher in April last year as opposed to May in 2010. However, in 09, he was better in May and lousy in April. Guess you just don’t know. He’s wild tonight early on though. No command.

  93. GreenBeret7 April 17th, 2011 at 8:34 pm

Looks like the backend of Pokey is back to polluting the boards again.

    Let’s Go Yankees!!!!!

Jones/Chavez/Martin are very good pick ups.

Also, getting Garcia/Colon instead of Ducscherer/Harden.

    Knicks, come on!

  199. Carlo April 17th, 2011 at 9:30 pm

Ac – look at the numbers up and down the lineup. They score all their runs via the home run because there are so many guys not hitting at all that sustained rallies are tough to come by. You’re never more than 3 batters from a sub 220 hitter coming to the plate with this lineup.

Don’t understand the Rangers. Ogando’s stuff is much more suited for the pen and closing than Feliz’s is.

If you have to move one of those two guys out of the pen how can you not move the more well rounded, higher upside guy into the rotation.

  238. West Coast Yankee Fan April 17th, 2011 at 9:36 pm

ac! I have been pushing Montero as a DH forever – seems that some think that’s a waste of his catching abilities. I digress. If he can hit that well you stick him at DH rested and probably wear and tear and injury free for the next 12 years.

  282. BD (Boston Dave) April 17th, 2011 at 9:45 pm

    Triple,

it was a clear foul though. it doesn’t matter if it affects the play – and considering the shot clock was running down, it did affect the play to a degree. If they dont pass the ball to Anthony there, they’d have been hard pressed to get off a good shot.

Knicks let this one get away. Nobody to blame but themselves. They outplayed the Celts and let it get away.

    ————–

    tied with NHL.

Too many teams make the playoffs. But at least in the NBA, the better teams almost always win in the 1st rd.

In the NHL, there’s almost no advantage to being the top seed. One hot goalie and you’re out of the playoffs after 80+ games to an 8 seed.

Both leagues need to cut out more teams or give 1st rd byes.

  307. YsGuy April 17th, 2011 at 9:51 pm

you cant be serious. no big deal?

8 teams out of 30. the least amount of teams in the playoffs of any major sport.

the wildcard makes it possible for the 2 best teams (often NY and Bos) to both rightfully make the playoffs if they’re in the same division.

it also creates so much more interest in the game.

  355. CB April 17th, 2011 at 10:01 pm

Best swings Jeter has had all season.

Got it off the end of the bat but that’s completely secondary given how he’s been hitting.

He pulled his hands in and succeeding in getting the bat head through the zone to the ball. He did it fast enough so that the ball didn’t make contact closer to the handle producing a ground ball.

And that pitch he hit was a 94mph fastball. Jeter had the bat speed to get to the pitch with that hands first swing that has made his career.

Granderson – after Alex and Robbi he might have the best bat speed on the yankees.

    He has astonishingly fast hands.

It was those hands that always made me think the trade for him was an outstanding move and that there was no reason why he couldn’t get better hitting LH pitching.

He has such fast hands that he is able to allow the ball to travel extremely deep into the zone. And then he just uncoils on it.

The power he possess for a player of his size is amazing. When he hits one he absolutely crushes the ball.

He’s got the potential to dominate games from an up the middle position. Those are some of the most valuable players in the game.

    BD (Boston Dave),

I’m looking for a fair system. A system where the wild card is put at no disadvantage is not a fair system. A fair system should not put teams that are 3 or 4 games over 500 in playoff contention and soon enough we will have another willdcard team added with the possibility of a 1 game playoff between them. sounds like a gimmick to me. The problem with that logic is you can’t put the wild card team and the division winner on equal footing. Home field is not as big a deal as in basketball or football. It used to be a big deal to win your division. Now it doesn’t even matter like what the Yankees did last year and the year they had to start in Ana

I don’t mind that at all.

He has pitched well but he also had that game where he walked two and gave up two hits and two runs — and he lucked out the other day after he threw a wild pitch with a runner on third and got a lucky bounce off the wall — and then tonight he walks the lead off batter on four pitches and then someone jacks it to the wall.

Pitched well most of the time yes. Lights out, no.

Why isn’t Nunez on 2nd?? We need a run.

    —————————-

Nunez is still on the team? lol

  505. Captain Clutch April 17th, 2011 at 10:30 pm

Nunez should be running for Posada. Posada will only score on something hit really well in the gap.

  506. ac1 April 17th, 2011 at 10:30 pm

The pen will be fine as year goes on… (i think)

  507. YsGuy April 17th, 2011 at 10:30 pm

once again the rangers stick with the starter too long. thanks again nolan!

  508. ac1 April 17th, 2011 at 10:31 pm

They get Jones, and Jeter (who hits LHP better)

  509. BD (Boston Dave) April 17th, 2011 at 10:31 pm

Girardi needed to pinch run there.

    ugh

    hope it works out anyway

A singled hitter and the worlds slowest man representing the go ahead run on 2nd. Not ideal.

  515. ac1 April 17th, 2011 at 10:31 pm

Jeter hasn’t exactly shined in these situations since 2009.

So you are saying someone else is BobbyCA?

  520. Gary April 17th, 2011 at 10:33 pm

Posada is going to have a tough time scoring if Jeter gets a BH

  521. -Matt- April 17th, 2011 at 10:33 pm

If Jeter can’t catch up to Arthur “41-year-old” Rhodes, there’s a problem

    jeter is all done

  523. -Matt- April 17th, 2011 at 10:34 pm

5 even seems like a stretch

    Captain groundout

  525. ac1 April 17th, 2011 at 10:34 pm

Someone pull a stat on the last time Jeter had a clutch hit late in a game?

  526. LGY April 17th, 2011 at 10:34 pm

    Vineyard,

Your name is Bobby, you are from California, and every time “BobbyCA” posts he is buddy buddy with WCYF.

Come on. People here are not stupid.

  527. Chase April 17th, 2011 at 10:35 pm

    Derek Jeter is dead.

Derek 4-3ter has taken his place.

  528. Captain Clutch April 17th, 2011 at 10:35 pm

Jeter fails once again. He would probably still be late on someone throwing in the 80′s.

  529. BD (Boston Dave) April 17th, 2011 at 10:35 pm

    looks like Soriano coming in.

praying he finds his way here….

  530. Carlo April 17th, 2011 at 10:35 pm

The beauty of expectations being proven prudent time and time again is that when Jeter doesn’t deliver, I no longer care. His futility really has softened me……in a sense I am numb to his multi year run of not getting big hits late.

  531. JM April 17th, 2011 at 10:36 pm

Well that was a wasted opportunity…

  532. BD (Boston Dave) April 17th, 2011 at 10:36 pm

am I the only one tired of Brian Wilson’s beard?

yeah, i get it. it’s funny. haha.

    enough……

  533. Captain Clutch April 17th, 2011 at 10:36 pm

Gardner and Jeter batting back to back has to be 2 of the easiest outs in the majors. Similiar to the pitcher and #8 hitter in the NL.

  534. BD (Boston Dave) April 17th, 2011 at 10:37 pm

    lets go Soriano.

    no more hanging curveballs

  535. ac1 April 17th, 2011 at 10:37 pm

  536. jackamir April 17th, 2011 at 10:38 pm

    “Yes you are”
“No, u can even call my grandmother, she’ll tell u I don’t have multiple screennames”

    Rafael Soriano is making $12M.

And today the inning he pitched was lower leverage than the one Joba pitched.

And the only reason why is a completely arbitrary classification that he must pitch a certain inning.

  597. CB April 17th, 2011 at 10:58 pm

The Yankees back up third baseman right now is better than the vast majority of 3b starting in for other teams in the game.

He’s swinging the bat and fielding like he did when he was wracking up numbers.

That same very sweet left handed stroke.

Never thought we’d see that again given how bad his back had gotten and the injuries to his legs.

  598. Carlo April 17th, 2011 at 10:58 pm

Maybe I’m mistaken but I tend to think Bobby V is. If hamilton is healthy, he’s playing left field anyway. So, if hamilton is healthy, we hold tex at 3rd on the chavez single for what reason?

  599. Bryan April 17th, 2011 at 10:58 pm

He’s going to “swing out of his shoes here.”

    See. Just as I thought.

The level of smugness is really special.

    Just awful announcing.

Martin tried to damage the pitch and Bobby is just diminishing what actually happens just to try to convince everyone he’s the smartest guy in the room.

Cash has made some mistakes, but you must credit him with Chavez and Martin – they have been huge for the team. Chavez has this great attitude, very unusual – he wants to be a bench player. What a guy to have when Alex can’t play.

I can’t get on Joba – he’s not perfect, but he’s been good – it happens.

Rich, I don’t think they are scared of the Celtics, but they have lost so many close games to them this year and the Celtics are great closers. It’s going to be very difficult for them to win game two now – they must be pretty down. D’Antoni is going to have a heck of a job getting them not to dwell on a missed opportunity

  711. Betsy April 17th, 2011 at 11:30 pm

  716. Betsy April 17th, 2011 at 11:36 pm

Rich, they should, but understandably it sounds like they were down. Stephen A. Smith said it took them awhile to emerge to meet the media – probably licking their wounds. They need to be resilient and try and take the positives away from this game as harping on the negatives (and the loss) won’t do any good. I’m in no mood to read how the Knicks choked or whatever. I normally go to Tommy Dee’s blog, but I read his summary of the game and I’m like, what? I get that you earn respect by wins, but the Knicks are hardly a complete team and I’m almost positive they gained some respect tonight (not that that was the goal).

  720. GreenBeret7 April 17th, 2011 at 11:43 pm

TY, Marshall was outstanding today. he’ll get better and go longer. By May, he’ll be turning 8-8 inning beauties. People forget how much time he’s lost and how young he is. Lyerly and murton are mashing the ball and the almontes are beginning to show their talents.

Apparently Marshall got hit in the foot by a broken bat in the first inning, no damage though thank goodness, he has gotten better in every start since his first one, he starts again at home on Friday so I will get to see him again. His mom actually kept me up to date on the play by play since I wasnt home for the first few innings. He allowed just 3 runs but one was an inherited run that Solbach allowed to score on a sac fly, 3 hits in 5+ innings is pretty good especially against a few of the guys on the Manatees who love hitting against Tampa. I knew too with the laws of baseball that if you get a chance for a rematch with the opposing pitcher you lost to earlier in the week/month then the next time you face them you will do better.

  726. tyanksfan36 April 17th, 2011 at 11:51 pm

  734. Rich in NJ April 18th, 2011 at 12:02 am

For the Mets to be like the Knicks, 40% of their roster, including their rotation, would have to be comprised of all-world talent.

  735. Betsy April 18th, 2011 at 12:07 am

Knicks are not a mess, thanks to Walsh…… This franchise is in the best position its been in in years. I didn’t watch the post-game on MSG (too heartbroken to do so), but I caught bits and pieces. It was so great to see Pearl and Bernard King there – it’s been way too long. The team isn’t perfect, but they busted their behinds out there tonight.

  736. Betsy April 18th, 2011 at 12:08 am

I thought a few weeks ago they were a mess, with that losing streak, but boy they are a different team. If only Melo didn’t have such a bad game tonight – but again, it happens to the very best. I’m really glad Amare dominated because he’s been sort of lost in the Melo shuffle – plus, he was so tired the last month or so. Guy came up huge – I think Davis might want to keep quiet from now on.

  737. Betsy April 18th, 2011 at 12:11 am

  739. GreenBeret7 April 18th, 2011 at 12:12 am

Not hard to be in the best position they’ve been in years when that position was as bird cage lining.

    Jeez, whatever.

  741. LGY April 18th, 2011 at 12:13 am

Good quote from Amare. We will learn a lot about this team on Tuesday.

  742. Betsy April 18th, 2011 at 12:14 am

Rich, late in the season they actually beat bad teams like they were supposed to, so that was encouraging. I still don’t see them winning the series, but then I never felt that success for them was only winning the series. There’s no reason they can’t beat the Celtics, but the Celtics will be better on Tuesday, no doubt

  743. Betsy April 18th, 2011 at 12:16 am

LGY, yep……..he’s a real leader (not to say Melo isn’t). I love Melo, I love Amare – but I have a soft spot for Amare because he came first. I think the Knicks have to withstand the first few minutes of that game – if they can, then I think they’ll be ok because I don’t think they are scared.

  744. Betsy April 18th, 2011 at 12:17 am

  745. Rich in NJ April 18th, 2011 at 12:17 am

I believe you have to be a defense-first team to win consistently in the NBA. I have my doubts about D’Antoni coaching that kind of team for 80 games, but tonight they showed that they can do it, so I expect that in the playoffs, they will continue to do it.

  746. Betsy April 18th, 2011 at 12:20 am

Rich, they definitely can do it …..which makes it frustrating when they don’t. I enjoy being all hyped up about the Knicks again………

  748. JT April 18th, 2011 at 12:23 am

I don’t watch much basketball anymore, but that offensive foul call against Anthony was a total joke. Someone in the Knicks ownership should publicly and loudly say something about a call like that in a playoff game on the road. Sure, Stern will slap the person with a 100 grand fine. But it would be worth it because given the league’s problems with their officiating, it would put extra pressure on Stern and by extension the refs to be very careful the next time.

Had a call that egregious been made against the Yanks when the Boss was alive and kicking, there would have been hell to pay in the commissioner’s office.
