Alexi Ogando P
Time/TV: 8:05, ESPN
Umpires: Fieldin Culbreath HP, Adrian Johnson 1B, Gary Cederstrom 2B, Lance Barksdale 3B
Weather: 57 degrees, mostly cloudy
Happy anniversary: Today’s the 60th anniversary of Mickey Mantle’s first big-league game and Bob Sheppard’s first game as the Yankees’ PA announcer.
Pen authoring good relief: The Yankees’ bullpen has a 1.96 ERA over the last six games.
Cano heating up: Robby Cano comes in with a team-season-best eight-game hitting streak, batting .364 with five doubles, two homers and eight RBI over this stretch.
Oh Ogando: Alexi Ogando is the only pitcher since they started playing with a “live ball” in 1920 to win his first two starts in a season while going at least six innings, giving up two hits or less and yielding no runs.
Update, 8:04: We talked to Alex Rodriguez just before the clubhouse closed. Here’s his quote on whether there’s a possibility of a DL stint after hurting his lower back/oblique and coming out after six yesterday: “I hope not. I’d like to think I pulled myself out hopefully with perfect timing. I felt that if I went out there and took a violent swing, I could have put myself at risk for a couple of weeks.”
Update, 8:17: Not a good beginning for Sabathia. Two-run homer to the left-field seats for Adrian Beltre in the first.
Update, 8:21: Looking forward to seeing Ogando after his great start to the season. It’s first season in the rotation for the Rangers after working in relief when he came up last year.
Update, 8:25: 1-2-3 first for Ogando.
Update, 8:38: Nine-game hitting streak now for Cano, with his fourth homer landing in the right-field seats — 2-1 in the second.
Update, 8:46: You can see Eric Chavez still has that Gold Glove touch at third. Nice pick to start the double play here in the third.
Update, 8:54: Brett Gardner talked pregame about possibly tweaking his patient approach since he has been falling behind in counts. So he just grounded that 1-0 pitch into a 6-6-3 double play after Russell Martin got hit to start the third.
Update, 9:03: Beltre is doing some damage. That RBI single make it 3-1 in the fourth. Also, it has started to rain. There was a sharp bolt of lightning across the sky, plus thunder.
Update, 9:14: The rain has lightened. Ogando has not. He has a one-hitter through four, up 3-1.
Update, 9:21: Nice work by Sabathia to get out of a first-and-second, one-out problem after his bad throw to first.
Update, 9:29: A base hit sighting. Two hits now for the Yankees after that one-out single by Chavez in the fifth. But Nelson Cruz just robbed Posada with a diving catch in right.
Update, 9:32: Two-run homer for Russell Martin – 3-3. Had a 1-on-1 chat with him pregame for an upcoming story about him trying to reestablish himself. He’s doing a good job so far. That was homer No. 4. That also gives the Yankees a franchise-record 26 homers through 14 games.
Update, 9:38: Sabathia can’t handle Beltre. RBI double, 4-3, Texas, in the sixth. The $96 million man is 3 for 3 with all four RBI.
Update, 9:49: Sabathia gets out of the inning. That could be it for him. He’s above 100 pitches. We’ll see. David Robertson had been warming up.
Update, 9:56: It’s a good thing for the Yankees they have this kind of power. The long ball is carrying them again. Curtis Granderson two-run shot, 5-4 Yankees.
Update, 10:04: Sabathia is still in for the seventh. But Joba is warming. Sabathia is at 112 pitches with one out. And now he’s done. Joba is in.
Update, 10:12: Close play at first. Russell Martin threw out Elvis Andrus. First-base coach Gary Pettis has been ejected by Adrian Johnson for arguing the call. Runner on second, two outs.
Update, 10:14: CC now winless in four starts. Joba blows the lead. Michael Young’s ground-rule double to right-center ties it at 5-5.
Update, 10:21: It’s raining again here in the last of the seventh.
Update, 10:27: Ogando is done. Arthur Rhodes is in, first and second, one out.
Update, 10:34: Rafael Soriano is on for the eighth. We’ll see if he can bounce back from yesterday, and pitch well when it’s below 60 degrees.
Update, 10:41: One single and three outs for Soriano – 5-5, last of the eighth.
Update, 10:55: Chavez comes through, two-out RBI single, and it’s 6-5.
Update, 10:57: Bases loaded. Pedro Strop is coming in to pitch to Martin.
Update, 11:03: Strop did his job. Now Mariano for the ninth.
Update, 11:13: Yankees win, 6-5.

Yikes, I hope Arod doesn’t have to go on the DL. That would stink, after such a hot start….
Not sure if it has been noted already, but Jeter on “Extreme Home Makeover” tonight. Looks like a great story.
go CC
Who would have thought Knicks will lead by 12 at halftime with Melo playing hardly 3 minutes in the first quarter due to foul trouble….
Bunch of crazed dogs in the last post…Sheesh…
It appears to me that the players are probably pretty sick of the roll call. But whatever.
GO YANKS!
GO KNICKS!!!!!
Bunch of crazed dogs in the bleachers too!
the roll call is nice, but seems like it is slightly distracting to the players
Let’s go Yankees! The Knickerbockers looked great in the first half….
Go CC. Go Yanks.
i liked bobby valentine way better when he was in japan.
ESPN jinxed us
Andrus is quick. I’m not a big fan of Yankees Sunday night baseball.
Randy, I liked him best when he was in disguise, lol
cano has to go get that ball.
really interesting report/video on Ogando here:
http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/.....exi-ogando
kinda cool story how Ogando ended up as a pitcher for Texas.
Martin yanked the throw but Robbie needs to catch that ball.
throwing error?
it wasn’t a good throw, but robbie has to catch that ball.
Did anyone notice that the famous STEVE Swisher is playing.
Looks like Sabathia has to fight the texas hitters and his own catcher tonight. He’s made 3 really bad throws this year.
Wow….ring him up.
haha blake
great minds think alike
Trisha,
Congrats…good week. If Garcia had been activated and not on the bench, we would have tied.
Cano has been very lazy defensively this season.
lets see that curveball CC
Cano hasn’t played good D at all this year so far
SAS,
Yes. Is that Nick’s kid brother?
Crap.
beltre is a good player.
i think the red sox didn’t realize what they gave up.
wow that came out of nowhere….CC was looking so good
horrible pitch
that’s probably the worst spot to throw it to beltre
oh well, CC will recover
Again, Sabathia can’t finish off hitters.
Beckett is better.
Non ace ace
OH NO–WE’RE DOOMED!
(credit to Buzzkill for the slogan)
CC is just not “ace” caliber.
the rangers are like the new angels for us…
How long are we going to keep kidding ourselves that Martin is a good catcher?
“Aces” do not take their team out of the game immediately, which CC does.
Cue the “CC is not an ace” posts….
Now CC for the second game in a row doesn’t have his stuff.
Nice job CC, you dud.
martin missed the target by nearly 5 feet. The throw was supposed to be to the 1st base side and he wasn’t even close.
Probably should’ve broke out that curve to Beltre…..man those feel like cheap runs.
Stupid pitch is what that was.
“CC is just not “ace” caliber.”
Yeah, and Garcia shouldn’t be pitching for the Yankees.
Any other early-game brilliant deductions?
CC gives up more runs in the first inning than Beckett gave up in his last two starts.
“Aces” do not take their team out of the game immediately, which CC does.
–
CC’s 1st inning ERA = 3.10
Roy Halladays 1st inning ERA = 3.70
Right, because CC was so bad in Boston……..
Any other deductions?
Just that CC makes it look so effortless, doesn’t he?
Josh Becketts 1st inning ERA = 4.27
umm yeah so CC has been pitching well this season according to his ERA so chill with the crazy comments
sidenote: I wish you could ignore certain user where there posts don’t show up. That would be nice
“Now CC for the second game in a row doesn’t have his stuff.”
Isn’t the report on CC that he starts out slow every year?
Who wouldn’t trade CC for Halladay?
I would.
Well, it was a good evening until the trolling daisies showed up.

CC gives up more runs in the first inning than Beckett gave up in his last two starts
________________________________________________________________________
Are you a Yankee fan or a Sox Trowl? If your a yankee fan spare us the Beckett BS
Make ogando work.
hmmm no one hits more ground balls than Jeter
Interesting
Looks like we have too many trolls here today…..
I expect a couple of homers tonight…Grandy might be one of them.
Looks like “mypalfish” has shown up with a new troll screen name. Bye gumballandpokey, you tool!
It’s not BS.
Beckett is better.
And Jeter really made the guy work.
Probably the best swing of the season for Jeter and was against a hard throwing righty.
Ogando will taste his first loss today.
Go Yanks! Go Knicks!
i’m breaking my rule and chatting on here during the game, i dont know why. but im already having second thoughts…
Trishy–
How can you tell?
So far CC’s having some issues similar to what he was going through at the beginning of his first year with the yanks.
He’s not consistent with his fastball command because his front side mechanics aren’t right. His front side is opening up too early and he’s getting under the ball. It seems to be most pronounced with his fastball.
BTW Trishy–If you have SAS e-mail address, could you please send her my contact info? Faster than trying to reach Chad.
“gumbyandpokey = mypalfish. Ignore the ugly troll until it disappears.
“Looks like “mypalfish” has shown up with a new troll screen name. Bye gumballandpokey, you tool!”
Nice guess, but wrong. You’re wrong about many things, though, so it’s no surprise.
You can already tell this Rangers pitcher is better than Sabathia, too.
Bojo, because he’s STUPID enough to use the same dullwitted lines that he used as mypalfish.
Don’t feed the trolls.
That’s the way you attack hitters.
Instead the number one Yankee starter nibbles and nibbles and nibbles.
gumbyandpokey April 17th, 2011 at 8:25 pm
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
No Trisha…YOU were the one who said how effortless CC made it look. And CC is many things, but “effortless” is certainly not one of them.
blake, agree.
IGNORE THE TROLLS
bojo, will get the info to SAS
YsGuy April 17th, 2011 at 8:24 pm

Congrats on your sobriety. Good job!
Thx Trishy!
The ACE continues to stink
thx bojo. forgetting your anniversary is probably a good sign..
nice double play
Pokey gave himself away with the “effortless” comment that mypalfish (pokey) said on and on and on last week.
Very nice turn.
Nice DP.
I liked this Ogundo kid from the first time I saw him pitch last year…it will be interesting to see how long into the season he can be effective before he tires.
Trishy–Don’t be afraid to trade him later in year…
Regardless of tonight, the Yanks will get to Toronto with no worse than a 1 game lead in the East
Hey Sis ~
I’ve been trying to reach you via email for awhile but haven’t heard back.
Maybe you can send me an email, in case I don’t have your latest address…
Thanks.

thx bojo. forgetting your anniversary is probably a good sign..
_________
That or early onset dementia.
Now I know the 123 step.
i dont mind the trolls so much i just ignore them. my only thing is there should be some kind of a rule that they have to read everyone’s posts when the yankees put up a 5 spot and the game is all but over. not one of them ever has the balls to stick around and take it what they know they deserve.
trisha – true pinstriped blue April 17th, 2011 at 8:21 pm
“Now CC for the second game in a row doesn’t have his stuff.”
Isn’t the report on CC that he starts out slow every year?
————————-
CC was a better pitcher in April last year as opposed to May in 2010. However, in 09, he was better in May and lousy in April. Guess you just don’t know. He’s wild tonight early on though. No command.
Looks like the backend of Pokey is back to polluting the boards again.
Sux 6 games under .500
58 Years ago today….565 feet from home plate
The nursery for children is open today… Trolls, your Mom just called you for dinner… Come on up from the basement.
You can tell just from the first few batters than Ogando has better natural stuff than CC.
Cano!!!!!
Robbie!!!!!!!!!!! Love that guy
cano begs to differ…
cano is a STUD!!!
Doncha’ know!!!!!
Notice how “effortless” that swing was?
Astonishing piece of hitting. The bat control and hands were just unbelievable.
robbie cano don’t you know!
Cano doesn’t hit many cheapies, don’t you agree gumbass.
2 more runs and the trolls go away.
“Pokey gave himself away with the “effortless” comment that mypalfish (pokey) said on and on and on last week.”
Bingo! Believe me, the POS won’t be around a lot longer.
There is a lot of good posters on here tonight. Ignore the idiots.
Bojo, I told you “mypalfish” was a dirtbag troll. His latest screenname is the same dirtbag troll.
Nice to see Cano extend his streak to 9. It’s nice to have him replace Arod in the lineup when needed.
Trisha,
If your annoying blather and arguments are allowed, then anyone should be allowed.
Really CC?
im in the lohud fantasy baseball league. at this moment, the last day of the head to head matchup, i am leading Derek Jeter Redemption by 10 points. the only player i have in this game is andrus and the only guy he has in is cc.
so im rooting for the yankees and against my own fbb team!
Let’s Go Yankees!!!!!
I really want this game tonight. I want this series. The claw and antler nonsense still very much annoys me.
Wow Chavez
Nice!!
Nice pick.
great play by chavez
Maybe we can turn 11 double plays tonight and make up for friday.
Love Chavez in the lineup.
yeah maybe we double play tonight like Texas did on Friday
Not a bad pickup, by either Chavez, or Cashman…..
Steve Swisher is back?
Nice! Meanwhile, the Celtics are creeping closer…crap
when are we going to hear about the DPs that Texas is hitting into?
They are already 1/3 of the way there no?
Valentine calling it right. Cashman did a great job in the off season.
Chavez who can hit and field is such an improvement over last season.
KeithOlbermann Keith Olbermann
Interesting decision by #ESPN to cancel Sunday Night Baseball and replace it with Bobby Valentine’s Autobiographical History Of The World
the only thing that annoys me about valentine is his voice. like i said he likes to hear himself talk, but he does know baseball.
Jones/Chavez/Martin are very good pick ups.
Also, getting Garcia/Colon instead of Ducscherer/Harden.
Sometimes, non moves are moves too.

shows you what even ESPN thinks of kruk that his only part in this broadcast was to talk about the food before the game started.
Gardner sucks so hard. He is worse than useless. Good God, learn to bunt you pathetic automatic out.
Bojo –
Get rid of Gardner and teach Jorge Vazquez to play left.
Gardner will be fine, but he better go back to his old swing sooner than later. The mechanical changes he made this offseason aren’t looking good and he clearly isn’t comfortable.
Like to see the pitch count even out, the Rangers are making CC throw alot of pitches.
Bring back Melky!!

I’ve seen a lot of slumps, and when players get out of whack, they do look overmatched. He’ll get back to where he was. The season is young.
there’s the thunder
Terrible throw by Gardner.
If I was playing and lightning struck, I would run off the field so fast that The Flash would look like a slow poke.
what’s with all this rain in NY, ridiculous. this game better not game delayed

Needs more roids. Looks like he lost 15 pounds.
Bartolo starting!
Will Rogers – “I never met a media person that wasn’t the greatest ever.”
the hamilton play wasnt really a stupid play, it was just a stupid slide by hamilton.
really that could have been a double play
Tex is so very good at first.
AC1 – many answers to ur question:
1 – arod is a great hitter
2 – arod makes tex a better hitter
3 – posada and gardner are automatic outs
4 – jeter is very close to an automatica out
These are just some of the reasons we don’t score much without Al in the lineup.
D is really coming through big time today.
nice catch
Carlo, I knew that. I was being passive aggressive.
wow, CC
escape again
ok now
Let’s Go Yankees!!!!!
Knicks look pretty, pretty, pretty good. Fingers crossed!!!!!!!!!!
cc is grinding it out tonight
Olbermann tweet:
“I was kidding about the MLB “cancellation.” Then #ESPN called a manager a “head coach”"
wake up, bats
AC – haha. I too was being passive aggressive. My #1 and 2 were passive and my #3 and #4 were aggressive.
Look at that lazy 2nd baseman Cano. Too lazy to dive so he ends up playing where they hit the ball.
But in all seriousness, how can this lineup be that dependent on A-Rod?
Knicks, come on!
Ac – look at the numbers up and down the lineup. They score all their runs via the home run because there are so many guys not hitting at all that sustained rallies are tough to come by. You’re never more than 3 batters from a sub 220 hitter coming to the plate with this lineup.
I just saw Joba in Boston Garden.
Douglass for three….yessssssssssssss
Posada gets robbed
Tough play for Jorge, when the team isn’t hitting well those never seem to drop.
Russ with the muscle
Russell!!!!!
Martin!
sweetness!!!!!!!!!!!!! Martin LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh yeah!
well i guess if we have to live on the homers, we have to live on the homers…
Russell’s got Muscle.
Love that Russell Martin!!!
MARTIN!!!
Nick how’s that o/u lookin now!?
4 down, 3 to go, Russell Martin!
Liked that one, Doctor Longball
Now they have more to talk about it’s probably up to 65% now
That HR by Martin was so sweet!!!
Working the remote like a true ace tonight.
don’t worry, Gardner is here to calm us all down…
I hope Montero likes SWB.
Nick in SF should win double if Martin hits twice as many HR as his O/U (8)
and he doesn’t disappoint.
Another great at bat from BG
I first posted this back in February, and reposted tonight
BoJo April 17th, 2011 at 8:23 pm

I know Anthony is a choker
did that look like a foul tip by gardner?
Gardner absolutely lost.
I hope Montero likes SWB.

Unless Posada can’t get his average up….
Play Jones, he has a chance of getting on base
Wooo Gardner sucks!
Maybe BG needs to get an MRI
We owe CC a win here Yankees Offense. Keep grinding.
Home call. Ticky tac at this point of the game….
I hope you’re all watcing the basketball game
nailbiter
CC stay strong . . .
“Ticky tac at this point of the game….”
————
not really but if he hasnt been calling it all game, cant call it now. but it’s a foul for sure.
bs
Hard to believe knicks last playoff win was april 2001
nailbiter in boston, indeed….
Don’t understand the Rangers. Ogando’s stuff is much more suited for the pen and closing than Feliz’s is.
If you have to move one of those two guys out of the pen how can you not move the more well rounded, higher upside guy into the rotation.
ac! I have been pushing Montero as a DH forever – seems that some think that’s a waste of his catching abilities. I digress. If he can hit that well you stick him at DH rested and probably wear and tear and injury free for the next 12 years.
Yankee Trader,
wow
Long obviously told Gardner to try a different approach and swing early in the count but the problem is they aren’t strikes. The point was to swing if they are throwing get me over fastballs like they usually do but tonight he isn’t getting those pitches so he shouldn’t be swinging. He is completely lost right now.
Ogando will probably move back to the pen later in the year.
c’mon CC shut it down, please
hate to say it
Ray Allen is unbelievable
Martin is in beast mode
Of course another lead off hitter gets on base. CC’s location has been dreadful…
wow really just that quick…maybe we shoulda INT walked Beltran
Wow that didn’t last long

I mean he can catch twice a week to give martin a break.
I hate to say this, but if Beltre stays healthy, he is going to get 3000 hits and be a HOFer.
Terrible last shot – no experience.
Anthony = choker
he proves over and over, in Denver, now in NY
Damn. the Knicks should have gone for the 2
Tough way to lose on a 50 yo Ray Allen 3-pointer
Celts!!
yankees trying to get cc a win and he keeps putting it further out of reach.
non-ace ace
Go Celts!
CC’s fastball is just not there right now.
Knicks got Robbed. Period, exclamation mark….
Abysmal game from Melo. Just awful.
How many times is CC going to let Beltre beat him?? Everyone knows that Beltre loves high fastballs so stop throwing them…Just unreal..
I hate to say this, but if Beltre stays healthy, he is going to get 3000 hits and be a HOFer.
—
I highly doubt that. He’s had 2 seasons in his career that I’d deem hall of fame worthy
this constant leadoff hitter on base is getting real old.

wow really just that quick…maybe we shoulda INT walked Beltran
/////
we’ll have to remember that in june when we play the mets.
any ideas about how to deal with beltre on the rangers?
those runs we got were not easy to come by tonight…so it was not very helpful to give up more runs right away….
day off tomorrow….
get joba up.
Martin continues to impress.
Gardner is totally lost
Anthony cannot make the big time shot in playoff, period.
He also had a TO in the last minute.
Pure Choker, why do Knicks need him anyway?
CC gives up the lead as the Knicks give up the game.
lol
Girardi should get Robertson up, CC is going to put this game out of reach.
Napoli bailing out CC there.
just gotta keep the Rangers at 4.
tough night but CC usually heats up with the weather
Thats why the NBA is a joke. You call an offensive foul that didn’t even effect the play with 20 secs left to go.
Nice 30 foot attempt by Anthony with 5 secs left. He should have drove to the hoop and then shot a pullup j. Nite, nite Knicks.
wfan is gonna be fun tonight. lol Knicks.
i smell a win here!
Let’s Go Yankees!!!!!
Geez, it’s not like they got their doors blown off………
yeah i didnt get why Melo didn’t charge the basket..

==============
Library quote from Blojo. LMAO !
Anthony was a non-factor tonight. Very disappointing!
c’mon CC
The NBA playoffs are the worst playoffs. But still, I’m sad for the Knicks
Triple,
it was a clear foul though. it doesn’t matter if it affects the play – and considering the shot clock was running down, it did affect the play to a degree. If they dont pass the ball to Anthony there, they’d have been hard pressed to get off a good shot.
Knicks let this one get away. Nobody to blame but themselves. They outplayed the Celts and let it get away.
Beltre HOF? That’s amusing. 32 years old, 1900 hits, 281 HR’s and a .274 BA.
Patrick April 17th, 2011 at 9:40 pm
I highly doubt that. He’s had 2 seasons in his career that I’d deem hall of fame worthy
___________________
I think so–he started young and will accumulate the magic 3000 hits.
Carmelo was beyond awful down the stretch. Plus with 2 mins to go they give another phantom offensive foul on the Knicks right before the Knicks hit a 3 which would have put them up by 7
WCWF, but he played for the Red Soc for one year…..
So he is a lock…
I can’t believe the Knicks lost. I bet my entire net worth on them on the money line because some guy on this board named Mick said they were definitely going to win. I can’t believe he didn’t actually know for sure. Man, this stinks.
Who is the loudmouth who keeps saying the Rangers are not intimidated by the Yankee mystique? How many times has the guy said this? Who is he? I know it’s not Bobby V.

BD (Boston Dave) ,
You put your whistles away and let the teams play in the final minute. They do it in hockey. When stat drove to the basket a minute before that there was clear contact made and nothing was called.
Last batter for CC

Good point, I stand corrected.
that deserves an argument from Joe…..he’s out!!!!!!!!!
The Knicks will regret letting that one get away….
OUT!!!!!!!!!
If a manager doesn’t come out of the dugout to argue that I don’t know when he would.
It has been proven that the home crowd nor travel nor the familiarity with the baskets is the reason for home court advantage. It is all the refs. Read the book score casting
I’m over the worst of it – I said beforehand that I’d be happy with a competitive series. Well, we’re going to get one…………

I find it humorous that you lambasted me for using (as you called it) preverted, childish humor, and yet you and John call me Blojo. You certainly exhibit a level of stupidity and hypocrisy unmatched ny anyone here,
BTW–how does it feel knowing John has agreed to efforts to get you banned? Is that like throwing you under the bus?
Again, more hypocrisy.
Melo lost the game for the Kiicks. That was a pathetic final two possessions.
And Dantoni is an idiot for calling plays for an ice cold Melo when Amare was on fire.
damn, I am angry
“The NBA playoffs are the worst playoffs.”
————–
tied with NHL.
Too many teams make the playoffs. But at least in the NBA, the better teams almost always win in the 1st rd.
In the NHL, there’s almost no advantage to being the top seed. One hot goalie and you’re out of the playoffs after 80+ games to an 8 seed.
Both leagues need to cut out more teams or give 1st rd byes.
there’s no way the manager can tell from where he is whether that guy is out. the only reason you come out to argue that is if your fielder is screaming, for one because your player thinks he’s out and for another to keep your fielder from being thrown out.
# Patrick April 17th, 2011 at 9:40 pm
I hate to say this, but if Beltre stays healthy, he is going to get 3000 hits and be a HOFer.
—
I highly doubt that. He’s had 2 seasons in his career that I’d deem hall of fame worthy
=======================
Next thing you know Blojo will claim to have a HOF vote. LMAO !
LGY,
that’s the key – Amare was unstoppable but didn’t touch the ball towards the end. Carmelo just had to be the hero.
“I think so–he started young and will accumulate the magic 3000 hits.”
Even if he does he won’t get in, nor will he deserve to.
“the NBA playoffs have been great so far, all the games have been good…even the 1-8 matchups”
Too long, no real upsets and far too many teams make it in. Makes the entire thing totally uninteresting; in my opinion of course.

I think so…He’ll be hitting in a bandbox for the next few years, he’ll have reat line-up protection, and he is still young enough to get 175 hits for the next 8 years. We’ll se, but he might finish with 400 homers, 3000 hits.
please no DP
I like Grandy’s chances here.
Why didn’t Jeter take 2nd. Hard to throw him out while sitting down in RF.

In the NHL, there’s almost no advantage to being the top seed. One hot goalie and you’re out of the playoffs after 80+ games to an 8 seed.

That’s why I like NHL playoffs more than NBA. There are at least some cool upsets.
I enjoy the MLB playoffs more but the format for NFL is probably the best overall.

“MLB used to have the best system when only 2 teams made the playoffs in each league. Now wild card teams make the world series like its no big deal”
————-
you cant be serious. no big deal?
8 teams out of 30. the least amount of teams in the playoffs of any major sport.
the wildcard makes it possible for the 2 best teams (often NY and Bos) to both rightfully make the playoffs if they’re in the same division.
it also creates so much more interest in the game.
if it were 2 teams in the playoffs right now, MLB would have to cut down to 16 major market teams.
Joba looks hugh, how much does he weigh now
Did I type Blojo? Sorry, typo.
Best swings Jeter has had all season.
Got it off the end of the bat but that’s completely secondary given how he’s been hitting.
He pulled his hands in and succeeding in getting the bat head through the zone to the ball. He did it fast enough so that the ball didn’t make contact closer to the handle producing a ground ball.
And that pitch he hit was a 94mph fastball. Jeter had the bat speed to get to the pitch with that hands first swing that has made his career.
Granderson – after Alex and Robbi he might have the best bat speed on the yankees.
He has astonishingly fast hands.
It was those hands that always made me think the trade for him was an outstanding move and that there was no reason why he couldn’t get better hitting LH pitching.
He has such fast hands that he is able to allow the ball to travel extremely deep into the zone. And then he just uncoils on it.
The power he possess for a player of his size is amazing. When he hits one he absolutely crushes the ball.
He’s got the potential to dominate games from an up the middle position. Those are some of the most valuable players in the game.

I have defended Melo from day one, but I got nothing tonight.
He basically did everything his detractors call him out for. Selfish, too many shots, poor D, etc.
I’ll say right now that I think leaving CC in is a mistake.
BD (Boston Dave),
I’m looking for a fair system. A system where the wild card is put at no disadvantage is not a fair system. A fair system should not put teams that are 3 or 4 games over 500 in playoff contention and soon enough we will have another willdcard team added with the possibility of a 1 game playoff between them. sounds like a gimmick to me. Whats next a home run derby to determine tie games in extra innings?
Take CC out now

The problem with that logic is you can’t put the wild card team and the division winner on equal footing. Home field is not as big a deal as in basketball or football. To be fair he hasn’t been lights out this season. I’m not going to kill the kid but he has a couple of lumps this yr.
Martin rules.
Now, they may want to consider Nunez for Posada.
Martin’s been well and at the right times this year
What a champ
win the game right here
Wang Is Taiwan,
true.
CC’s wins will come. he hasn’t pitched his best this season.
Joba has been a pleasant surprise in my opinion, however. As blake said, walks will kill you and hopefully Joba is better next time out.
How many teams have a better 7th inning guy than the Yankees do? nobody?
Way to go Martin. Let’s go boys!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pinch run for Posada, Joe!!!!
The lead comes back to us if Rhodes comes in.
Gardy is the guy I definitely want up here. Guy kills it. Ron would be a complete mope to give Girardi an excuse to PH for Gardner here.
Extra bases might get Posada in from 2nd
Favor to get a Lefty in for Jones. Thank you Ronny Boy. Now sit Gardner.
i was gonna say before the game that girardi was smart to drop that hint that arod would be able to bat, just to plant the seed in washington’s head.
ok now lets see the big man!
mr martin is really starting strong. let’s hope he can keep this up
Jones has to hit for Gardner here
wow. they are going to bring in the lefty and face Jones instead of Auto-Out Gardner?
Against all Odds,
true – not lights out all season. but he’s been pitching exceptionally well lately, at least.
let’s hope tonight was the anomaly.
Ooooo this is looking good.
looks like arod really cant hit…
Why isn’t Nunez on 2nd?? We need a run.
Doesn’t Ron Washington know that Rhodes wears a T-shirt that states “Property of the NY Yankees?” They kill this guy!
Maybe they should go back to the 07 Joba rules
looks like arod really cant hit…
___
I think Jones can handle Rhodes.
I am surprised Washington didn’t bring a righty into the game to get the Gardner matchup instead of Jones
YT,
no idea. it makes sense – the beauty of having Posada at DH is that you can easily pinch run for him.
Just think back on all of Arthur Rhodes clutch appearances in Yankee Stadium.
Joba has not been lights out all year. He has pitched well but he also had that game where he walked two and gave up two hits and two runs — and he lucked out the other day after he threw a wild pitch with a runner on third and got a lucky bounce off the wall — and then tonight he walks the lead off batter on four pitches and then someone jacks it to the wall.
Pitched well most of the time yes. Lights out, no.
# Yankee Trader April 17th, 2011 at 10:28 pm

Nunez should be running for Posada. Posada will only score on something hit really well in the gap.

They get Jones, and Jeter (who hits LHP better)
Girardi needed to pinch run there.

So you are saying someone else is BobbyCA?
Posada is going to have a tough time scoring if Jeter gets a BH
If Jeter can’t catch up to Arthur “41-year-old” Rhodes, there’s a problem
jeter is all done
Also, I don’t think I see Jeter hitting more than 10 homeruns this year
5 even seems like a stretch

Your name is Bobby, you are from California, and every time “BobbyCA” posts he is buddy buddy with WCYF.
Come on. People here are not stupid.
Derek Jeter is dead.
Derek 4-3ter has taken his place.
Jeter fails once again. He would probably still be late on someone throwing in the 80′s.
looks like Soriano coming in.
praying he finds his way here….
The beauty of expectations being proven prudent time and time again is that when Jeter doesn’t deliver, I no longer care. His futility really has softened me……in a sense I am numb to his multi year run of not getting big hits late.
Well that was a wasted opportunity…
am I the only one tired of Brian Wilson’s beard?
yeah, i get it. it’s funny. haha.
enough……
Gardner and Jeter batting back to back has to be 2 of the easiest outs in the majors. Similiar to the pitcher and #8 hitter in the NL.

If the Yanks can’t score against Rhodes that would be upsetting lol
how about a walk a single and a double, that would be a switch!
Lets Go Yankees!!!!!
wow just missed that
He just got under it.
Is Alex available or no?/
Vineyard
This is entertaining. You are so full of it.
Two Bobby’s from California that are best friends with WCYF. Riiight.
Who really cares about how many screen names one individual uses? It shocks me people spend time discussing stuff like this.
“You are so and so”
“No I’m not, I’m not that person too”
“Yes you are”
“No, u can even call my grandmother, she’ll tell u I don’t have multiple screennames”
“Fine, how about I come to your house as well”
“Fine”
Just checked california phone book, found multiple roberts. Now we just need to see if wcyf has multiple friends with that name and mystery solved.
Rafael Soriano is making $12M.
And today the inning he pitched was lower leverage than the one Joba pitched.
And the only reason why is a completely arbitrary classification that he must pitch a certain inning.
Just remarkable stuff.
Carlo lol.
well, here we go. get Tex home….
if only Swish could bat right handed all the time
I miss Alex

couldnt agree more cb, but its not just the yankees, this happens all over mlb
Let’s go Chavez.
Pls chavez one time here.
of course with the OF in, Tex is hardly a sure thing to score on a single
Lets Go Yankees!!!!!
little base knock here
Come on Chavez!! Be patient….
sending tex on any hit. make them throw him out.
chavez can do it here.
has posada been able to do anything from the right side this year?
Score a couple of runs and turn it over to the Panamania Nightmare
Yeah I’m done. I apologize to the rest of the board for getting caught up in craziness of those three.
well i asked at the start of the inning for a walk a single and a double, chavez has the chance to make me right here!
c’mon eric i swear i voted for you for the asg when you were an A
***Panamanian***
BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Chavez!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YES!!!! Chavez
Eric is the man!!!
yes!
Wheeewwwww!!!!!! Atta baby Chavez!
Chavez!!!!!
DH him everyday!
Wow, Chavez!!!!
Now, Mo time!
Go Chavez!!! He has been amazing…
Suzyn Waldman is totally useless. They should package her and Kay and get a real announcer. Mr. & Ms Redundant……
Soon, dont you almost have to have him in the lineup more and Posada less?
Leave Rhodes in like that and he will not disappoint.
Gotta love the man! Will he be able to get a little pie tonight?
Can always count on good old Arthur Rhodes!
# ac1 April 17th, 2011 at 10:56 pm
Chavez!!!!!
DH him everyday!
——————————–
can he play SS I keed I keed
Chavez, Martin, Colon, and Garcia……all contributing big time early this season.
This Eric Chavez looks like he could still play every day.
Posada better start hitting or Chavez is going to start DHing more often
somebody nudge that old man out there in the bullpen!
lol the Rangers are scared of Posada??? Martin has been hotter recently
Wow Chavez. He has been awesome thus far.
i would rather pitch to Posada
Chavez! That is a professional baseball player. Yes sir!
our friend Arthur
have to get Chavez into the lineup somehow
I keep telling you guys it is futile to lie when the archives can prove you are liars.
BobbyCA January 11th, 2011 at 4:52 pm
WCYF,
Tex has a full no-trade clause
I am taking a drink to Cashman right now.
Chavez, Martin, Colon, Garcia
Who’d have thought those 4 would form what pretty much anyone has to say is shaping up to be one of Cashman’s best offseasons?
Does Valentine really not know how to pronounce Tex’s name or is he trying to be “cute”?
The Yankees back up third baseman right now is better than the vast majority of 3b starting in for other teams in the game.
He’s swinging the bat and fielding like he did when he was wracking up numbers.
That same very sweet left handed stroke.
Never thought we’d see that again given how bad his back had gotten and the injuries to his legs.
Maybe I’m mistaken but I tend to think Bobby V is. If hamilton is healthy, he’s playing left field anyway. So, if hamilton is healthy, we hold tex at 3rd on the chavez single for what reason?
Ron Washington back to his old habits??
Walking Posada to face Martin with the bases loaded and putting in a wild pitcher?
HA
I hope Martin makes ‘em pay.
jackamir
couldnt agree more, she is totally worthless. and brings out the absolute worst in sterling
That was a weird intentional walk. Posada has a couple of homeruns but he hasn’t been hitting at all. Another run would be nice here.

What a great game to watch. A winner for ESPN.

I answered your questions and gave you truthful answers. If you don’t like it, oh well.
Let’s go Martin!!!!
Sterling doesn’t need any help to be AWFUL.
Chavez’s swing just looks great right now….he’s very short to the ball. This guy was a really good player a few years ago….he looks rejuvenated.
also a very good broadcast by this announcing crew imo
Martin looking for the grand slam…
That was just outstanding plate coverage from Chavez.
Great extension on his stroke.
He went down and got that ball and succeeded because he focused on taking the ball back through the box to score the run.
walk an insurance run in
Carlo — I think Valentine thinks he’s uber-charming to listeners. NOT.
Chavez will get a day at 3rd in Toronto with A-Rod at DH and Posada watching.
no swing
chavez and jones can be our strawberry and raines type
Martin had a great rip at that 2-0 pitch.
Mo time
Enter…. sandman
ok whiners, lets hear it, martin sucks bring up montero….
Come on Mo!
this is a real entrance, not the Papelbon entrance we had to stomach last weekend.
Love that ESPN is showing the MO emergence. Don’t get that enough. It’s priceless.
wait, they cut it off? Really?!?!?!?!
One ” Mo” time, SANDMAN……….
That cost them one run on the check swing. 3-1 and bases loaded….gotta be looking for a middle in fastball….or just spit on the pitch.
ESPN finally gets rid of their Sunday night baseball team – and they replace them with guys who are basically just as bad as Miller and Morgan were. In some ways even worse.
That’s almost a hard trick to pull off.
They should have signed Nick in SF. Nick’s actually as witty as Bobby V perceives himself to be.
For anyone wondering why Douglas was on the floor while the 3 was in the air here you go.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....r_embedded
Brad. What don’t you understand? BobbyCA on LoHud IS NOT my friend Bobby. His screen name is Vineyard Yankee. My response above “thanks Bobby” was addressed to the poster named Bobby. Whoever it was. I realize you are not bright – but even you can get this no?
I have told you a hundred times. Prove it otherwise and I will disappear forever from here. But if you are wrong — you do the same.
That’s pretty powerful. As is Bobby posting his real phone number. Now who would do that but someone telling the truth.
Great game, never a dull moment.
4 out of 5 days work here for Mo.
He’s been a busy man so far this season.
ESPN finally gets rid of their Sunday night baseball team – and they replace them with guys who are basically just as bad as Miller and Morgan were. In some ways even worse.
___
No way. These guys are 100% better than Miller/Morgan, which isn’t hard to accomplish.
Melo just had a bad game – that’s it. It happens – he’ll be much better next time.
So far Brian Cashman has completely shoved it back in every persons face who criticized his off season as weak and losing to the Red Sox. Has a single new acquisition been poor yet? Heck, Prior’s looking pretty good, and Millwood and Silva are nice insurance to have right now.
Let’s go Mo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’ve always been a Bobby V fan but he’s a pretty bad announcer. Think he’ll ever learn how to pronounce Tex’s name properly?
Mo Rivera! Lord god of the universe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wouldn’t work with Hershiser.
chavez looked so strong on that hit. it was down and away. he stayed with it and hit it very hard. great sign for the team.
given how well martin has played, this team really has to scare some folks
I don’t know…..I really hate to say it but I almost prefer Morgan and Miller.
Bobby V patting himself on the back about Russell Marting 2-0 swing.
He’s going to “swing out of his shoes here.”
See. Just as I thought.
The level of smugness is really special.
Just awful announcing.
Martin tried to damage the pitch and Bobby is just diminishing what actually happens just to try to convince everyone he’s the smartest guy in the room.
I missed something, if someone calls that phone number then Bobby V disappears forever?
Really????
i’m just glad we got through an ESPN telecast without an hour of hearing about the Red Sox, even when they aren’t playing.
they kept the focus on the game much better than YES does. nobody yukking it up with kay and nobody anywhere as boring as flaherty.
Cash has made some mistakes, but you must credit him with Chavez and Martin – they have been huge for the team. Chavez has this great attitude, very unusual – he wants to be a bench player. What a guy to have when Alex can’t play.
I can’t get on Joba – he’s not perfect, but he’s been good – it happens.
Oh god that cutter was sick
Unhuman.
beautiful pitch
Goodness. Mo’s cutter has unbelievable movement tonight.
nick K!
that’s how you strike out a batter!
Great pitch..Come on Mo, 1 more!!!
Good announcing is all about making the listener feel good in one way or another. Valentine’s comments are really self serving.

9-5…..
Bring on the Jays.
Chavez knocks in the winning run and makes a nice pick on a tough play with a very fast runner.
Call the number and let’s see if we hear it in the booth!
Sweet – took 2/3 from a very good team
Mo is making an early case for CY Young
Mo ought to be illegal…..
whooohooooo hopefully now everyone will shutup about Texas
GREAT GAME!!!
and despite all the whining and crying that cc sucked and they can never win with jeter and gardner in the lineup, check it out, somehow they managed to do it!
i stuck it out this time but i will go back to my usual 2+ years practice of not coming here during the game again. waaaaaay to much stupidity and negativity.
for those of you who actually root for the yankees, certainly the minority here, it was fun sharing a win with you guys.
Ac, duh – how could I forget those two?
Hopefully the Yanks will score a ton of runs in Toronto and Mo can have a nice couple of days off
A great way to cap off the weekend by taking 2 of 3 from Texas. Yeah baby !
High socks Mo > low socks Mo?

Maybe
I think he could pitch with no socks and he’d still be unbelievably good
Great win against a great hitting opponent. This Yankee team is very good. Once CC finds his rhythm and if we acquire another SP, it’s going to be scary for the rest of the league.
frankie s plays and the yankees win the series.
their starters will get better. it’s just a matter of time.

Good night night people! Great game.
yankees need to lock this Panamanian kid up long term.
this is only the 2nd time in 9 games that he threw more than 14 pitches in a game.

Well that’s good news about Alex…………give him as long as it takes as we don’t want him to reaggravate the injury
Betsy
I think they can build on it. They just have to get over the hump and execute down the stretch.
Morgan and Miller made me wanna puke. I like Bobby V. He is a clown, but an entertaining clown.
YsGuy,
Sorry about that, but all of the bickering made me curious. When I found a post that seemed to put the matter to rest, I posted it.
did anyone listen to the radio broadcast tonight. was wondering if sterling did ‘it is high… it is far’ on flyouts as many times as he did yesterday (3 i believe) he’s done it every game i listened to this week.
The Knicks are the notre Dame basketball team of the NBA. Anybody hoping to see a win in the playoffs or not choke down the stretch, deserves to be disappointed.
its ok ghost it was more of a complaint about them, not you.
Beer first, skype later???
Beer (s) as in many.
Considering where the Knicks have been for the last 10 years, only a knave would be disappointed.
Rich, I don’t think they are scared of the Celtics, but they have lost so many close games to them this year and the Celtics are great closers. It’s going to be very difficult for them to win game two now – they must be pretty down. D’Antoni is going to have a heck of a job getting them not to dwell on a missed opportunity
Rich, definitely – I want to win one game in this series and generally be competitive in the others. I’m really shocked Melo had such a bad game, but it happens.
Betsy
If they can’t put this behind them, I would be shocked. They should hold their heads high, and realize that they can beat the Celtics if they keep playing this way.
Hey Brad, long time, man! I’ll drop you a line in the next couple days.
Ghostwriter – youre not very bright are you.
Rivera in 8.1 innings in 9 games has thrown exactly 100 pitches…76 for strikes. That’s domination.
Rich, they should, but understandably it sounds like they were down. Stephen A. Smith said it took them awhile to emerge to meet the media – probably licking their wounds. They need to be resilient and try and take the positives away from this game as harping on the negatives (and the loss) won’t do any good. I’m in no mood to read how the Knicks choked or whatever. I normally go to Tommy Dee’s blog, but I read his summary of the game and I’m like, what? I get that you earn respect by wins, but the Knicks are hardly a complete team and I’m almost positive they gained some respect tonight (not that that was the goal).
Kevin Garnett blatantly tripped Toney on the 3 by Allen btw.

GB
I was glad to see Marshall get run support today, I just hope the Tampa Yankees saved some of their juice for tomorrow night. Do you have any idea why Jairo Heredia only pitched 1 inning yesterday?
Knicks need to be up by a lot nearing the end of the game, lol – they won’t be getting any calls (this is one reason I would hate the NBA if I didn’t love the Knicks – the refs are a joke)
TY, Marshall was outstanding today. he’ll get better and go longer. By May, he’ll be turning 8-8 inning beauties. People forget how much time he’s lost and how young he is. Lyerly and murton are mashing the ball and the almontes are beginning to show their talents.
Garnett is the dirtiest mofo in the NBA and he gets away with it 99% of the time.
The Knicks are as big a mess as the Mets. Just a collection of contracts.
Game of Thrones owned, Yankees owned. Ended just in time for the 8th-9th. Time to catch up on the 4-7th.
heredia only pitched 1 inning because he was getting hammered. He’s not close to being the same pitcher as two years ago.
GB
Apparently Marshall got hit in the foot by a broken bat in the first inning, no damage though thank goodness, he has gotten better in every start since his first one, he starts again at home on Friday so I will get to see him again. His mom actually kept me up to date on the play by play since I wasnt home for the first few innings. He allowed just 3 runs but one was an inherited run that Solbach allowed to score on a sac fly, 3 hits in 5+ innings is pretty good especially against a few of the guys on the Manatees who love hitting against Tampa. I knew too with the laws of baseball that if you get a chance for a rematch with the opposing pitcher you lost to earlier in the week/month then the next time you face them you will do better.
GB
I am surprised they took him out though, they have left guys in there a lot longer than that, maybe it was that and something else was up. Ill have to see him pitch since he is the only one that I havent been able to see.
The Knicks need a guy to knock Garnett on his butt. Next year, but he Knicks will win this series.
With Chavez playing as well as he is they can give Arod Tues and Wed off if he needs it. Or even let him dh when he comes back. They just have to watch Chavez since limited play in the field might be best to keep him healthy all year.

i think gatting max production out of people is one of girardi’s strengths. he did a masteful job with damon and matsui 2 years ago.
Girardi needs to get Nunez some PT otherwise he will be worthless if he is needed.
“The Knicks are as big a mess as the Mets. Just a collection of contracts.”
——-
Huh?
The Knicks have 2 of the best players in the NBA and are in the playoffs right now.
How are they like the Mets??
mets will lose 100+ this year, easy
For the Mets to be like the Knicks, 40% of their roster, including their rotation, would have to be comprised of all-world talent.
Knicks are not a mess, thanks to Walsh…… This franchise is in the best position its been in in years. I didn’t watch the post-game on MSG (too heartbroken to do so), but I caught bits and pieces. It was so great to see Pearl and Bernard King there – it’s been way too long. The team isn’t perfect, but they busted their behinds out there tonight.
I thought a few weeks ago they were a mess, with that losing streak, but boy they are a different team. If only Melo didn’t have such a bad game tonight – but again, it happens to the very best. I’m really glad Amare dominated because he’s been sort of lost in the Melo shuffle – plus, he was so tired the last month or so. Guy came up huge – I think Davis might want to keep quiet from now on.
This says it all from Amare:
Amar’e had best perspective: “In the playoffs, you have to take these games and learn from them. We can’t let this game beat us Tuesday.”
Source: twitter
**Alan Hahn.
The Knicks play up (or down) to their competition, or at least up have under D’Antoni in the regular season That’s why I am still optimistic about this series.
Not hard to be in the best position they’ve been in years when that position was as bird cage lining.
Jeez, whatever.
Good quote from Amare. We will learn a lot about this team on Tuesday.
Rich, late in the season they actually beat bad teams like they were supposed to, so that was encouraging. I still don’t see them winning the series, but then I never felt that success for them was only winning the series. There’s no reason they can’t beat the Celtics, but the Celtics will be better on Tuesday, no doubt
LGY, yep……..he’s a real leader (not to say Melo isn’t). I love Melo, I love Amare – but I have a soft spot for Amare because he came first. I think the Knicks have to withstand the first few minutes of that game – if they can, then I think they’ll be ok because I don’t think they are scared.
You just have to learn to live with their flaws for now and sort of forgive them
Betsy
I believe you have to be a defense-first team to win consistently in the NBA. I have my doubts about D’Antoni coaching that kind of team for 80 games, but tonight they showed that they can do it, so I expect that in the playoffs, they will continue to do it.
Rich, they definitely can do it …..which makes it frustrating when they don’t. I enjoy being all hyped up about the Knicks again………
Night!
I don’t watch much basketball anymore, but that offensive foul call against Anthony was a total joke. Someone in the Knicks ownership should publicly and loudly say something about a call like that in a playoff game on the road. Sure, Stern will slap the person with a 100 grand fine. But it would be worth it because given the league’s problems with their officiating, it would put extra pressure on Stern and by extension the refs to be very careful the next time.
Had a call that egregious been made against the Yanks when the Boss was alive and kicking, there would have been hell to pay in the commissioner’s office.
