if the socks are going to win this one, i hope they hang a 20 spot on the jays and bautista has to come in and pitch an inning (then has a sore shoulder tomorrow).
cgrand14 Good morning everyone. A nice off day here! Hall of Famer Sam Crawford was born on this date in 1880. Like @Joba_62, he is from Nebraska!
teixeiramark25 NBA playoffs started last weekend with some big upsets. I still think the Spurs and Lakers will advance to the next round. There is no dominate team this year in the NBA, but the Bulls are the closet…they’re my pick to win it all!
stuckey, you could contact me via my flickr page, accessible by clicking on the link in my name here. Add @ yahoo dot com to my flickr name and I’ll get it.
Or, if you can contact me through Chad.
Or you can contact me through Jerkface’s Lohud Drama clearinghouse.
Jerkface – remember this moment. WC has now gone from bashing Joba, to thinking he’s doing a good job and belongs in the 7th, to saying it’s what he’s thought about him all along.
Stay tuned for next week’s version. (Hint: it will be totally based on whatever Joba is doing at the moment…
**************
Did everyone hear that Colon is starting this week? At least it’s what I heard last night from ESPN, during the game.
I think I will predict a DiceK meltdown in either the any of the next three innings. This may well be wishful thinking based on the way he is pitching.
By the way, his record against the Jays is 6-1. So I’m not getting very depressed about the way he is pitching today…
‘face – that was an interesting essay on pitching to contact vs. strike out. For a pitcher, it comes down to not letting the batter make good contact, however the pitcher makes it happen.
I suspect it was this kind of analysis that has led Cash more towards pitchers who can strike out the batter – “power arms”. Larry Rothschild apparently has a similar philosophy, emphasizing strikeouts. I wonder if this also led them to devalue Wang as a pitcher with longterm potential.
Last night, Ogondo looked nasty. However, he gave up 5 runs. How? Looked like he just missed enough to let Cano, Martin, and Granderson each get good wood on the ball.
Like the author, and many others, said – locate well, get ahead in the count, and expand the zone. Avoid the white (middle of the plate), and pitch on the black.
Jerkface April 18th, 2011 at 12:27 pm
I don’t think Gardner is causing Jeter to weakly ground out

on the mets broadcast last week, howie rose told this story: joe torre when playing for the mets once grounded into a dp 4x in one game (tied a record i think) and afterwards when asked about it he said:
“id like to thank felix millan who made it all possible” (millan was the lead runner each time.

I don’t remember those questions, but I’m happy for you. I thought the Yankees would stick with him a little longer.
Chad answered my question about Gustavo Molina and the chain reaction due to his superlative record but then Chad ignored my question about all my previously ignored questions.
Romero just can’t beat the Red Sox. It’s just a bad matchup for him. Was last year as well. The numbers the Sox hitters put up against him are just staggering. They really know how to lay off his changeup.
im not sold on the jays or the o’s. i think the o’s got all the bounce they are going to get from buck and thier general lack of talent (al east talent anyway) will begin to take over and thier young pitching will struggle. i think vlad and d lee are pretty much done and the rest dont impress me.
the jays have more than the o’s but im still not buying.
Sux fans are pretty pumped up after today. I am thinking the A’s pitching will bring them back into their previous state of depression with over the next two days.
“Sux fans are pretty pumped up after today. I am thinking the A’s pitching will bring them back into their previous state of depression with over the next two days”
Gee Trisha you are finally catching on. One evaluates someone based on their current performance; not what they did in the past or what you think or hope they will do in the future. At least smart and knowledgeable baseball fans do.
When Joba pitches well he will get praise from me. When he doesn’t he won’t.
What I have said all along is that Joba was overrated and over-hyped. That he is often a good pitcher, not a great pitcher and that the Yankees made the right decision putting him in the pen as he could not sustain adequate velocity and go multiple innings effectively as a starter.
Keep on plugging along you may figure out the game eventually!
btw, i posted earlier that i thought not enough was being done to control unsavory elements on the blog but i have been told behind the scenes things have been done. i did notice that gumbyandpokey disappeared while the rangers were still winning last night.
so i appologize and thank the proprietors for their efforts at this point.
Blake, the Sox are a very good team – they aren’t and were never going to keep up their poor pace. For them, Beckett and Lowrie look fantastic – that’s great news.
teixeiramark25 Flying to Toronto tonight, how many of you have been through customs at an airport? Even though my record is clean, I still get nervous when those agents stare at me and start typing away at their computers…ha!
blake – they go from Oakland to the Angels. Sweet!
WCSF, you blow with the wind. Other more perspicacious and honest posters will come up with a position and stick with it. They don’t quiver with each daily change and come on and pretend that’s what they were thinking – until they change the next time.
You’re a phony. We all know that.
“When Joba pitches well he will get praise from me. When he doesn’t he won’t.”
Yeah, he’s pretty distraught about that. He so longs for your praise.
In fact, this is what you said about him.
“It’s just amazing that we (including me) spend such an inordinate amount of time talking about a rather unimportant sixth inning relief pitcher.”
Doesn’t sound at all what anyone would say about someone that is “often a good pitcher.”
I once had a very hard time at EWR customs. They really believed i was a drug mule and only let me go when I insisted that they stop wasting my time and take me to get X-rayed.
But now I get a little nervous every time I do it.
Trisha – I don’t feel the need to make predictions about the future and guess what a player’s performance is going to be. In case you haven’t noticed, Joe Girardi doesn’t either. He doesn’t care much about what Gardner did last year – he has been doing poorly so he acted accordingly and appropriately. Hopefully he will do a better job when he is back in the lineup. If not, guess what will happen.
Just sayin……I think if he continues to play well then you let him be thd every day catcher next year with Montero catching 40 games and DHing the rest.
For those interested in such things. This is the link to a live 24/7 webcam of a pair of nesting bald eagles in Iowa and their three chicks who were just born. Very cool. About a third of the way down the page.
I can”t see Chad. Is this one of those deals where you have to where the special glasses?
Where… wear…. we’re….
I sent in an especially silly question (sample size caveats)
if the socks are going to win this one, i hope they hang a 20 spot on the jays and bautista has to come in and pitch an inning (then has a sore shoulder tomorrow).

If there’s a question about Gustavo Molina from a “Nick in SF’”, that’s mine.
heck, even if the socks are going to lose this one i hope they hang a 20 on them!
thanks for clearing that up NiSF, i would never have guessed…
I’d prefer a question about Nick in SF from “Gustavo Molina”
I like that Jorge Vazquez believes in himself, but no way he hits for avg in the majors while striking out 30% and walking none at all in the minors.
Nick, how you want to make arrangements to get me your address?

Crawford hitting 7th today and is 0-2. Down to .123. They are bouncing him around everyone in that lineup.

Nothing too profound, or newly discovered.
You guys should go on skype…
Done.
Or least an attempt has been made.
Ogando was pitching too much to contact (also is a massive flyball pitcher) only 4.2 k/9 on the year
Pitching to contact strikes again!

I don’t remember those questions, but I’m happy for you. I thought the Yankees would stick with him a little longer.
They are talking on Mlbradio about Martin giving away pitches by how he sets up….
Scutero might have lost his job permanently ….Lowrie just hit another homer.
Chad answered my question about Gustavo Molina and the chain reaction due to his superlative record but then Chad ignored my question about all my previously ignored questions.
BryanHoch @CC_Sabathia enters the corn field. If you’re a baseball fan, you’ll love this ad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ue7b1p_dbE0
i went one step further, i didnt ask him any questions about my previously ignored questions so he couldnt ignore it!
im so smart sometimes…
They are talking on Mlbradio about Martin giving away pitches by how he sets up….
–
Gustavo Molina has a 2 catcher’s ERA and Martin 4.77… when do we get worried?!
Molina has a zero catchers ERA when he catches Freddy Garcia.
Gustavo Molina has a 2 catcher’s ERA and Martin 4.77… when do we get worried?!
———————————
That’s a good chat question.
I was going to ask a Behold-Ar-No question but then I lost interest.
Romero just can’t beat the Red Sox. It’s just a bad matchup for him. Was last year as well. The numbers the Sox hitters put up against him are just staggering. They really know how to lay off his changeup.
I pitch to contact all the time.
My catcher ERA is 0.00… i should be catching… NV…i rather pitch to contact.
Everybody mesmerized by Daisuke?
Or taxes. I forgot about those.
Varitek is catching Dice-K today and caught Becketts last two gems. What will the Sox do when he retires?
I have a friend who works for the Sox who was in the media room at Fenway earlier. I guess he was supposed to be looking at film or something.
Well, he’s watching soccer and talking to me on the phone when owner John Henry walks in and catches him slacking off…
Good thing he knows my buddy (hes worked for the team for 15 years) or he might be a former Sox employee
I love Cano, but he is not a better player than Alex
What’s happened to that vaunted Jays offense we were talking about yesterday?
I’m sticking with my prediction that they’ll be in the bottom half of the league by year end (frankly I think they’re bottom third.)
Soccer silliness is a sanctioned activity now that John Henry owns part of Liverpool.
Let the criticism of Martin keep coming – I’m thrilled to have him (and glad I don’t have MLB radio).
I’m not going to judge Soriano’s attitude, but he’d better get used to pitching in cold weather.
im not sold on the jays or the o’s. i think the o’s got all the bounce they are going to get from buck and thier general lack of talent (al east talent anyway) will begin to take over and thier young pitching will struggle. i think vlad and d lee are pretty much done and the rest dont impress me.

Notice Chad ended the chat by giving some information but witholding some too. A hint of mystery. Leave them wanting more. Pro move.
BD, I took the under 76.5 from the Jays. I’m with you.
My second question to him was “what is the indentation that is just below the nose and above the upper lip called?”
Can anyone top that for silly?
O’s under 76.
I also asked “Do you think it’s past time for a change? And does anyone know what the h*ll that means?”
Next time, we should hold a contest for who asks the silliest question that he answers.
nick did he answer your molina question?
my molina prediction is he will catch 2 more games, get 1 hit and never be heard from again.
lets hope…
not hating on molina, hope he starts 140 games for the socks next year!
Yes, question answered. I’m a satisfied customer.
Sux fans are pretty pumped up after today. I am thinking the A’s pitching will bring them back into their previous state of depression with over the next two days.
Well I have to keep with my “Os and Jays are the bomb” prediction. But I can certainly see why people wouldn’t be convinced.
“Sux fans are pretty pumped up after today. I am thinking the A’s pitching will bring them back into their previous state of depression with over the next two days”
Said the same thing to patrick.
Let’s see the Sox win a couple outside the green cracker jack box…..

I mean 5 and 4 isn’t considered that great of a home stand is it? Especially when leading up to that home stand you were WINLESS in the season.
Also the large margin of victory today still only counts as 1 win. Sorry BoSux fans, only counts as 1 win.

Martin may make it hard for the Yankees to let him go after this year.
Baseball brilliance at its best. Some jackass calling Joba an UNIMPORTANT SIXTH INNING RELIEF PITCHER.

Blow all the smoke you want. You’ve been outed.
See ya now!
“Martin may make it hard for the Yankees to let him go after this year.”
Well, if he has a good year, and the Yanks let him go, not to hard to figure out his likely next destination…
Blake-
Why would they ?
Unless you think 1/2 a season as the BU catcher for Montero is enough training to become the primary next season.
Not sure I do.
The jerk store called and they’re out of you!
Joba will be very important to the Yanks success…..as will David “fireman” Robertson.
