    We can take both of these.

    We have beaten Drabek before and Cecil hasn’t been himself.

  2. Shame Spencer April 19th, 2011 at 9:06 am

    I’m excited to see what Colon brings to the table Wednesday.

    My only concern is he hasn’t thrown more than 70 pitches in any of his outtings (I don’t think so anyway). I’m sure Girardi will have a long man in mind for that game though.

  3. Shame Spencer April 19th, 2011 at 9:08 am

    Oh, and who wants to explain how we end up with a 2 game set book-ended by two off days?

  4. RadioKev April 19th, 2011 at 9:13 am

    Brett Cecil kills us, doesn’t he?

  5. MTU April 19th, 2011 at 9:13 am

    Shame-

    I think Noesi will shadow Bartolo.

    Don’t even want to attempt to answer your other question.

    MTU–

    Hope you are right. I expect close games….maybe decided by bullpens.

  7. upstate kate April 19th, 2011 at 9:14 am

    Shame
    It must have something to do w/ the Canadian exchange rate :)
    Who would have guessed that Aj would be the winningest pitcher for the Yankees so far?

  8. MTU April 19th, 2011 at 9:15 am

    Kev-

    He has been having the same sorts of velocity problems as Hughes.

    That may make him way more vulnerable than usual.

    At least I hope so.

    ;)

  9. Fran the original April 19th, 2011 at 9:15 am

    Shame,

    Not sure how long Colon will go either. But at least the Yankees have a day off on Thursday, so if the bullpen does get used, they’ll have a day off.

    teixeiramark25 Anybody want to spend the day with me at Yankee Stadium and watch a game? Go to dreamteam25.org and find out how!

  12. MTU April 19th, 2011 at 9:18 am

    The Yankees need to try to banks as many wins as they can now.

    This is the easy part of their schedule.

    It gets harder in the 2nd half with way fewer off days and more road trips.

  13. MTU April 19th, 2011 at 9:18 am

    edit: bank. sorry.

    Colon shadows about two Noesi’s.

    I agree with the days off but they have played Boston,Texas,Detroit,Minn and now Tor so its not like they were playing awful teams

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I agree. At some point Hector Noesi will need to make an appearance. Toronto and the rest of the league has never seen him so he should hold at least a slight edge.
    If Colon can give 5-6 good innings, the bullpen can carry the game the rest of the way.
  17. MTU April 19th, 2011 at 9:21 am
    Triple-
    That’s true but the proportion of home games in the 1st half is way higher than in the 2nd.
    The west coast trips are arranged to suck too.
  18. Shame Spencer April 19th, 2011 at 9:22 am
    MTU – I agree about Noesi.
    And you guys are right, its best to focus on the positive. 2 games sandwiched between two games of rest will only help our pen stay healthy as well as giving Alex a couple days off.
  19. BoJo April 19th, 2011 at 9:28 am
    I love the fact that Colon is now in the rotation…even when Hughes comes back, it gives him a chance to show what he can do. I think he’ll make the most of it and perhaps push Nova to pen.
  24. Shame Spencer April 19th, 2011 at 9:35 am
    This is semi-OT but I have to share..
    So this weekend my old roommate from college came down from upstate NY and we planned to go to two Yankee games, one on Saturday and one on Sunday, the latter of which was my birthday. I was excited for the Sunday night game because they usually win at home on my birthday. I always enjoy taking credit for a Yankees win.
    Well Saturday morning she and I were preparing to go to the 1pm game and as we sat at my house eating breakfast some of my family members started filtering into my house. They all seemed to have different reasons for showing up so I kinda shrugged it off at first. Then more starting pouring in (I’m Italian so the fam is pretty big) and I’m like ‘What the hell is going on here?’
    Finally, after my entire family is at my house followed by my friends, my parents present me with an invitation. I open it up and it tells me that as a surprise graduation/birthday celebration, we’re all going to a luxury suite at the Stadium to watch the game. My parents even chartered a bus to take us all there.
    It was one of the coolest experiences of my entire life. I’ve never sat in such style at a game before. The food was amazing, the bar was more than just a little useful, and even though it rained for most of that game we stayed totally dry (as my little cousin was quick to point out after thoroughly enjoying being treated like royalty, ‘Rain is for poor people.’).
    Basically, I have the best parents ever. I thank the good lord every day for making my dad a Yankee fan…
  25. MTU April 19th, 2011 at 9:35 am
    Bojo-
    And you kind of assumed something there.
    “Even when Hughes comes back.”
    Let’s hope so. No guarantee at this point.
    I hope his arm responds to the treatment and he doesn’t have a more serious condition.
  26. BoJo April 19th, 2011 at 9:36 am
    MTU–
    I have faith. After all, God is a Yankees fan!
  27. Erin April 19th, 2011 at 9:37 am
    Happy belated birthday, BTW. :)
  28. upstate kate April 19th, 2011 at 9:37 am
  36. Shame Spencer April 19th, 2011 at 9:46 am
    How about a day when you don’t annoy the crap out of this place.
  42. stuckey99 April 19th, 2011 at 9:59 am
    Let me put this out there again ( I said it 3 weeks ago).
    This winter was perhaps the first winter since Phil Hughes was an sophomore in high school (or perhaps even the 8th grade) where he wasn’t fighting for a job or trying to move up a level.
    Yeah, he was penciled into the rotation in 2008, but he was still just 21 and I’m sure saw ST as a time he had to win the job he was penciled in for.
    Wasn’t there some early remarks about his weight at the beginning of ST?
    I THINK perhaps (suspect is too strong a word, it’s a theory) that maybe last year’s increase in innings and maybe a different offseason routine (maybe even suggested/endorsed by the Yankees) is partly to blame for Hughes being behind.
    Yankees seems fairly well convinced the issue is just building arm strength, possibly because they are aware and complicit in Hughes not doing as much offseason work as he’s done in the past.
  45. Shame Spencer April 19th, 2011 at 10:05 am
    Vineyard – Thats kinda how it went. Its honestly not that weird for various family members to pop into my house on a weekend. One of my uncles uses our treadmill a lot so he told me thats why he was there. My dad does my aunts taxes, so she said she wanted to check in on something with that (didn’t cross my mind it was after the deadline). But when one of my other uncles said he just showed up at my house to ‘read the paper’ I started to get suspicious lol. Clearly, I’m not the most observant person alive..
    I’ll be back later.
    mtu -
    saw you comments about doreen and the response from the powers that be. my feeling is this blog is about losing ten more key people from becoming marginalized . chad and sam are nice guys and good reporters, but being nice guys they don’t have it in them to confront the bad guys who are driving people away.
    they really need to hire an exterminator .
  56. Joe from Long Island April 19th, 2011 at 10:23 am
    Stuckey-
    That could be true. Don’t know.
    But what I do know is that anti-inflammatories aren’t prescribed
    unless there is a problem with inflammation.
    Is the inflammation serious and will it go away
    Don’t know for sure.Maybe yes. Maybe no. To both questions.
    Let’s hope it does. If it continues then it might indicate a more serious problem.
    Guess we’ll find out soon enough.
    If all goes well Phil should be back pitching in about a month.
    I’m gonna hope for that.
    :)
  70. MTU April 19th, 2011 at 10:45 am
    JF-
    I can’t pin it down to a particular day but it was in the recent past.
    You could do a blog search if you know how ?
    I would guess within the last 2 weeks.
  71. Triple Short of a Cycle April 19th, 2011 at 10:46 am
    MTU,
    What I don’t understand is if she was threatened and they have this person’s information why can’t the police get involved?
  72. YsGuy April 19th, 2011 at 10:47 am
    doreen is scared to come on this blog b/c somebody from this blog (i think we can all guess who) compromised her email and may have stolen personal information.
    i want to be clear, im not speaking for doreen, but she is in our fbb league and we have been in contact.
    im sure she can change her address, but thats not the point. people should not have to worry that coming here could lead to such problems. also, i dont know about doreen, but i am from the generation that knows little about the mysterious workings of the internet, email and servers, and i have no idea how to protect myself from such intrusions and thefts.
    i do have a dummy emai which i created just for the purpose of registering myself on sites that might generate junk email and this may have protected me when that person threatened me.
    i dont know what the answers are, but it is a real shame that she is not here (as well as others) and although it may not have been preventable, warnings were sounded but ignored before the fact.
  73. MTU April 19th, 2011 at 10:48 am
    Out to walk the Mops.
    Back later.
  74. pat April 19th, 2011 at 10:49 am
    I understand the frustation because lots of good people have gone away but I think some may be mistaking Chad’s inability to do anything about what’s happening with reluctance to do anything about what’s happening.
    This blog is part of a newspaper; not just a privately operated blog and as such unless someone breaks the terms of service, they probably can’t do anything about banning people. Unfortunately, being annoying isn’t against the terms of service.
  75. Vineyard Yankee April 19th, 2011 at 10:52 am
    No I wouldn’t mind answering except that it will just stir the pot and I’m sure others here don’t want that stuff on here.
  76. Triple Short of a Cycle April 19th, 2011 at 10:55 am
    But this person threatened someone. Doesn’t that break the TOS?
  77. Jerkface April 19th, 2011 at 10:58 am
    Banning people on the internet doesn’t really work due to the way IPs work. I’m sure a particular instance of any one trouble maker has been banned, but its easy to then simply make a new account.
  78. West Coast Yankee Fan April 19th, 2011 at 10:58 am
    I think even though it’s early this is a big game for the Yankees and Burnett. To get to the promised land this season, we have to if not dominate, at least win series on the road fairly regularly. Months like August illustrate that clearly.
    The last time AJ faced the Jays he lasted 2 innings after giving up 7 runs and the Yankees have lost the last four games Burnett pitched against his former team. Although it’s one game, a good outing from Burnett will go a long ways towards burying any doubts about him going forward in 2011 and a poor start will inevitably bring back memories of last year.
    LET’S GO AJ!
  79. stuckey99 April 19th, 2011 at 11:00 am
    “I think even though it’s early this is a big game for the Yankees and Burnett…”
    There are NO “big” games in April.
    Ever.
  80. LGY April 19th, 2011 at 11:01 am
    Vineyard
    I may be wrong but given the conversation right now, I would think people would want to know if someone is using more than one handle on here.
  81. LGY April 19th, 2011 at 11:01 am
    Stuckey
    You called the Knicks game a must win! :(
  82. YsGuy April 19th, 2011 at 11:02 am
    i want to add here, that since the problem, chad & co have been very helpful and other authorities are looking into the problem. also other blogs that this person has been on have similarly been warned and are looking in to what can be done. as i said above, it is likely that the problem could not have been prevented although i dont know the particulars.
    doreen has said that she misses the blog terribly and has been resisting the temptation to re register and come back, and she may still.
    some people on here have claimed that they know how her (and other commenters) addresses and personal information can be gotten, so i assume that probably means more than a few people know what the best steps to take to avoid compromise would be.
    unfortunatly im not willing to post my email so that people could let me know how this can be prevented (and maybe where the breach is) so that i could pass it on. but then i would probably be too worried about passing on a virus to email it to her.
  83. Jerkface April 19th, 2011 at 11:02 am
    Drabek has a walk issue, Yankees should be patient tonight. Although saying this, I bet the Yankees expect Drabek to try and pound the zone and will be freely swinging away. I hope A-rod gets in there. He can then DH tomorrow and put Chavez in.
  84. Shame Spencer April 19th, 2011 at 11:03 am
    Its sort of ironic.. I remember having some quick conversations with Doreen and Erica and some other posters here about how we all tend to forget sometimes that we’re mostly complete strangers.
    I hate the idea that some of the best regulars are coming here less and less. The coverage by Chad and Sam is second to none, and I mean no disrespect by this, but its you guys that make me want to come here daily.
  85. Jerkface April 19th, 2011 at 11:03 am
    I’d also sit Jeter tonight and put Nunez in maybe.
  86. stuckey99 April 19th, 2011 at 11:04 am
    LGY,
    The NBA calendar says “October”.
  87. West Coast Yankee Fan April 19th, 2011 at 11:07 am
    LGY – I’ll jump in here. Why don’t you go ask everyone else, why Vineyard? What about you LGY? I’m tired of this crap. Vineyard has posted his phone number here and both he and I have given our permission and promised our cooperation to LoHud and their IT department to assist in any research they want to do.
    We both believe anyone using multiple screen names should be banned forever. What about that do you not understand? Hmmm?
  88. Bad Scooter April 19th, 2011 at 11:07 am
    Would you sit Arod tonight and tomorrow? We don’t play until Friday so that gives him 5 full days off. I hate sitting him when he was red hot, but it might be the smary thing to do.
  89. YsGuy April 19th, 2011 at 11:09 am
    i seriously considered not coming back, in fact vowed not to, but then i decided that by doing so, i would be letting this miscreant win and im not willing to do that.
    also i really do love coming here even though i get annoyed at some of what i read here. i’ve been coming here since a few weeks before arod opted out and im not going to surrender my enjoyment of it to some creep.
    I strongly suspect Arod will have the night off.
    With a lefty going tomorrow, you want to give him every chance to play 3rd against Cecil.
    Don’t think you’re gonna see Nunez, not with 2 games sandwiched between 2 off-days.
    They are trying to get Jeter going…
    Drabek has a walk issue, Yankees should be patient tonight. Although saying this, I bet the Yankees expect Drabek to try and pound the zone and will be freely swinging away. I hope A-rod gets in there. He can then DH tomorrow and put Chavez in.
    =======
    Why DH Chavez against a Lefty? Give Arod as much time as he needs and maybe DH him tonight and play Chavez so Arod avoids the hard turf.
    WCYF says he believes anyone using multiple user names should be banned for life, and the reason Vineyard Yankee won’t answer you is because he postes here under that name, as well as BobbyCA, same as on DN.
    Is it strange that as soon as WCYF starts one of his unending fights on this blog, his friend Bobby is right there to join in the attack. They must contact each other when they need someone to take their side in a fight on the blog.
    So here it comes, ready for your attacks and lies from each of you.
    Alex said he felt it more swinging a bat than fielding so DHing likely not a good option.
    That would make playing at all not a good option IF he were still feeling it. I’m under the assumption the days off he got and the MRI showing no damage means he is going to play today. They might rest him another day, but if he is good to go I’d DH him simply to get Chavez some ABs and get A-rod off the turf.
    “I think even though it’s early this is a big game for the Yankees and Burnett…”
    There are NO “big” games in April.
    Ever.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The old adage ……….. a win in April is as good as a win in September. Particularly this year where the August – September schedule is not Yankee friendly.

  106. blake April 19th, 2011 at 11:29 am

    Jeter is just starting to swing the bat a bit better and they were off yesterday …..he’ll be in there. Hope Arod is as well but unless less he’s sure he’s 100% then just let Chavez play….they could actually let him sit out the entire Blue Jays series and he would have 4 full days rest and only miss those 2 games.

    That’s all well and good, if true.

    quite frankly, I thought it was an insane thing to do posting your phone number on-line. Given the fact, if a person were so inclined, they could go to any one of several sites, and get all his personal info, just from that phone number, but, that was his choice.

    All the personal attacks is really hurting this blog, and if you and Bojo can’t get along, ignore him. You say you will, but it is obvious to the outsider, you at times go out of your way to get into it with him, and others.

    “The old adage ……….. a win in April is as good as a win in September.”

    This only means that each and every of the 162 games carries equal weight, which either means every game is “big” or no game is “big”. There is no in-between under the internal logic of that premise.

    So either way, distinguishing any ONE particular game as being “big” is a fail.

  122. blake April 19th, 2011 at 11:43 am

    “A child out of a little fishing village in Panama who has just one pitch.?”

    Well he actually doesn’t throw just one pitch anymore …..he throws enough 2 seamers to keep hitters honest and from sitting on the cutter. As a hitter you think a cutter is coming but there is enough doubt that you’re sawed off either way.

    I believe Lohud is innocent of damages here. It seems that Doreen opened herself up to attack by posting her personnel info on her web site.

    Similarly, a week or so ago someone named CRayn24 (IIRC) offered Yankees tickets to anyone, and that they should contact her at the email address she provided. This blog has been getting out of hand for some time. Several months ago I got into it with an individual here, and later the next night, around 3:30 AM I got a phone call waking me, and the caller said, “Good morning _____,” using the same phrase they used when addressing me on the blog. Do I think it was just a strange coincidence, no way, but I can’t prove it either.

  146. BoJo April 19th, 2011 at 12:25 pm

    It seems to me there are several levels of trolss here.

    The first guy (CR 9) wishes to prove he is an advanced hacker and preys on people for fun. I think that is his main objective.

    A second level is the Red Sox fan (Ruby/ERR) that pokes fun at the team in a harmeless way.

    The third is a guy who uses negative comments to try and draw attention to a web site in hopes that traffic will make him money.

    The fourth is a guy who tries to provoke arguments to gain attention, and stalks about 4 people who he feels he can provoke.

    There are probably other types, but those are obvious to me.

    Each tpe requires a different approach to dealing with the problem.

    The tech guy probably requires FBI/police intervention.

    The second is to be humored. Make him feel like he brings us luck (which it seems he does)

    The third type can be trained to alter his style as he has a profit motive. Or he can be ignored.

    The last type–I’m still struggling with the answer to that. When I ignore him, he escalates his lies and comments. When I confront him, he gets the attention he wants. I think if everyone knows what he is about and collectively call him out as a troublemaker (which we did on the Daily News), he can be managed, censored, deleted, banned, or whatever.

    It has never been my intention to ban people from any blog and limit free speech, but these are tricky issues.

    When you hear, I’m a baseball writer, and can’t monitor the blog response, then one wonders what direction the paper gave when they hired Pete’s replacement. Afterall, Pete had the same responsibilities, and was one person. Now there are at least 2 people, and neither want to be a blog monitor, or don’t have the time or desire to be one.

  158. BoJo April 19th, 2011 at 12:48 pm

    Al–

    This is all fairly new stuff, and the writers probably talk amongst their fellow writers as to how each deals with it.

    I know Sherman of the Post and Feinsand of the News walk away from dealing with comments to their threads/articles. In an e-mail, Mark told me he had tried but was constantly attacked by trolls, and it took too much time. I suspect they have advised Chad to ignore it.

    The blog community–especially a tight kniit one like this–CAN work together to come up with strategies to fight the trolls. If everyone commits to getting involved, they can stop all the types I mentioned.

  159. BIG AL April 19th, 2011 at 12:55 pm

    The 2 righteous brothers will never stop their act for sure, no matter how many of their fellow bloggers tell them how sick they are at the posts they put up, their constant change of opinions, and denial of previous positions. They then lash out at others calling them liars, when in fact it is they that lie. Their motto, a good defense is to consistently attach others.
