NIce draw for the Yankees. They miss the O’s two best guys.

    YAY, 3 games on YES…no fox…no espn!

    Kate – that’s always a good thing.

  4. jeffc_76 April 22nd, 2011 at 12:06 pm

No reason not to take at least 2 out of 3.

    Get CC his first win.

It’ll be interesting to see if Garcia can repeat his smoke and mirrors success. He’s facing a weaker lineup than his last start.

Also will be looking for some better results from Nova. He’s got to be on the shortest leash at this point, and the likely casualty when Hughes returns. I think his next 2 starts will be key for him. If he can get it together, he makes the decision much harder. If not, he could get bumped even if Hughes isn’t ready (possibly for Noesi).

  5. upstate kate April 22nd, 2011 at 12:07 pm

I am guessing we get Kenny as the games are in Baltimore. I liked the combo of him and Coney.

  6. West Coast Yankee Fan April 22nd, 2011 at 12:08 pm

Every position player is healthy, it’s time to sweep the O’s and make a statement as to how good we are, especially on the road. The hitters should put up a lot of runs at Camden and make it easier on the starters and pen — hopefully!

  7. murphydog April 22nd, 2011 at 12:08 pm

I’m going to miss Bobby Valentine. Not. He quite possibly beats Costas for being the guy who most thinks he is God’s gift to Baseball. Or is it just me…

  8. stuckey99 April 22nd, 2011 at 12:09 pm

    Big series, eh WCYF?

  9. pat April 22nd, 2011 at 12:09 pm

I like a Saturday night game.

Little League during the day and Saturday nights out are few and far between these days.

  10. murphydog April 22nd, 2011 at 12:09 pm

    Love Kenny.

Coney lookes like he is going to have a heart attack. Not wishing it on him, but wow, he looks terrible.

  11. LGY April 22nd, 2011 at 12:10 pm

Two Knick Ws and a Yankee sweep this weekend.

  12. Fran the original April 22nd, 2011 at 12:12 pm

    Kate,

Agree about the games on YES. We get Michael and Kenny this weekend. Kay was talking about it on his radio show.

Guess Ozzie just saved him for the big offenses ;)

  16. upstate kate April 22nd, 2011 at 12:12 pm

yeah Coney did look a bit rough around the edges, but I still was happy to see him back

  17. jeffc_76 April 22nd, 2011 at 12:12 pm

Bobby V. and the rest of the new ESPN crew are still a godsend compared to Miller/Morgan.

Now if they could just cut the nonsense with that superimposed strike zone box and the wacky camera angles. I’m fine with the box and camera for replays between pitches, but for live action they are an abomination.

  18. donnie23 April 22nd, 2011 at 12:14 pm

Brian Cashman must have suicidal thoughts when he looks at the pitching matchups for every series. We throw out Bartolo Colon, Freddy Garcia, and Ivan Nova and wonder why people criticize our ability to develop talent. Thanks god for the leagues best offense!

  19. blake April 22nd, 2011 at 12:15 pm

I think I prefer Morgan and Miller to be honest.

  20. yankeefeminista April 22nd, 2011 at 12:16 pm

It’s all for our benefit, you see. Baseball is too slow and we fans are all too stupid ;) I mean that superimposed strike zone thing is nothing more than arguing balls and strikes, the least productive activity there is. It’s also the least illuminative aspect of most games, unless the unpiring is downright scandalous.

Yea, I’m embarrassed for them. Not sure how many hockey fans there are here, but I consider it the same sort of abomination as the Fox Trac thing that Fox did back in the 90′s for a little while. It’s an insult to anyone that follows the sport.

@jeffc_76 Completely agree re: superimposed strikezone. That thing is obnoxious, intrusive and absurd. I’m sorry, but I’m not playing a video game and I don’t need to see where every single pitch shows up on the zone. There’s enough downtime between pitches to show the important ones.

Would anybody else find it fun to watch Garcia and Colon pitching in a doubleheader? If Colon pitched the first game, the opposing hitters would be screwing themselves into the ground against Garcia.

How is Nova and developing talent a contradiction in terms?

    ///
Yea, Nova would be “talent” under development. Had Joba been properly developed instead of jettisoned to the bullpen in 2010, we’d have another starter in the mix. There’s the rub. I can’t see people jumping all over Nova at this juncture. Give the kid a chance to breathe.

As it is, if we can hold it together until Hughes gets back, it may be like we’re adding a very good starter without having to make a trade. We’re out in front of the two teams that would challenge us most, Boston and Tampa. Hopefully that gives Cashman pause in terms of making some short fix deal that disables some important piece of the team’s future.

Speak for yourself Kate. I’m down in DC and we are in Baltimore’s market soeventhough I have the MLB package we will get the O’s broadcast. Hopefully, Jim Palmer is doing these games, but I doubt it since he did the series in NY last week. He’s very good, not a Yankee hater and is objective.

i think dan shulman is very good. hershieser is too quiet. valentine is grating both because of the pitch of his voice and his smugness, but he does keep the focus on baseball and knows a ton of it, its just his presentation that is so annoying.

one other thing about last sunday’s espn game, for all the talk on here about them always favoring the socks, they barely even mentioned the socks that day and focused on the yankees and the rangers the whole game.

now the cynics will say that was because the socks were sucking wind, but after complaining that they are red socks-centric you have to give them some credit there.

Morgan had one redeeming quality, he couldn’t get enough of Robinson Cano.

Of course the praise is a projection of his own narcissism since he identifies with great 2B. But everything positive he’s said Cano has deserved and was overdue at the time.

Who’s making decisions at 1050 these days, Lupica leading into Kay is just plain brutal. I couldn’t think of a worse 1-2 punch of obnoxious blowhards. At least 98.5 FM up in Boston only gives Dan Shaughnessy air time on the weekends when not that many people are listening.

this 5th team in the playoff with a 1 game play in for the wildcard actually makes sense to me.

1 game between the 4th and 5th seed to face the top team in the league.

Should provide some hope that the loser of the annual yankees/sox battle for first still has a chance in a 1 game playoff… vs. boston of course.

Also helps the 1 seed by probably not having the ace of the WC team go in game 1.

I hope if they do add the extra WC then its a one game playoff….I just don’t know if they’d do that. That makes the most sense scheduling wise and also makes the divisions really important because nobody wants to play a one and done elimination game.

Not overly optimistic about the Knicks as Amare, even if he plays, won’t be close to 100%………but I’ll keep my fingers crossed

im having a hard time finding the actual ratings, but every mention of francessa vs. kay says that the miked up trounces kay’s show.

the latest ratings i can find have francessa at a 5.0 and kay at a 1.7 but they are a couple of years old.

Post Mad Dog? I would think the audience would have dwindled somewhat once everyone realized how one-noted the show became once Mike went solo.

im not enamored about another WC team but if it leads to a big advantage for the division winner and doesnt mean the division winner has a week off before the playoffs start, then i am ok with it.

i say make them play a split doubleheader on tuesday then the rubber game on wed if necessary then start the division series on thursday.

yankfem, used to go there all the time! Was Mr. Basso there when you went? I don’t remember when he died but he was pretty much a mainstay there. I think his daughters also ran the store with him. They moved a few times and I’m not sure where they are right now. (They stayed on Atwells but just moved storefronts.)

I am hosting Easter and am way out of my comfort zone with cooking etc. So I am in the process of coloring the eggs and making baskets for everyone who’s coming. The Easter grass is a horror show because it goes all over the place. I sprayed static guard on my hands hoping it would make it more manageable!

    :)

the 5.0 for francessa was from july 2010. espn ratings were alot harder to get but kay was pulling a 1.7 im 2008.

  99. tomingeorgia April 22nd, 2011 at 1:29 pm

Trisha, the only thing worse than Easter grass is tinsel. You find it for months, wrapped around the vacuum beater.

  100. Carlo April 22nd, 2011 at 1:31 pm

LGY – I’m right here big fella. Freddy has made one start. Nova has made several and he has been awful. Dice K has made 3 or 4 and was excellent in 1. Nice sample size pal. Laughable, as always. Wait, if u drop freddy in as the #5, why not say dice is their worst starter and hughes is ours? Or nova, whatever is easiest for you.

“Just curious, what kind of ratings does Kay get in the same slot as Francessca?”

That’s the problem and why 1050 keeps shuffling it’s lineup every 6 months – Francessa’s show has blown them away in the ratings. That isin’t so much because of Francesa himself, but how much credibility WFAN has built up the last 20+ years and how people are just programmed to go there. Their signal is also 100x better.

His ratings have declined somewhat post-Mad Dog but still well ahead of 1050. In fact, the only time slot where 1050 is better is the nights (Stephen A Smith/Daughtery), probably because of the Knicks resurgence.

I didn’t know his name, but I assume that was he. There was an older woman who was always working to the side making ravioli, etc. who didn’t speak much English. The place was tiny. I haven’t been in years, but I always think of them and their delicious food around the holidays.

Good luck with the Easter thing. How many baskets do you have to make? I actually am momentarily in search of those Italian Easter egg braided bread baskets that my grandmother used to make when we were kids. However, I am out in surburbia, so not sure if the Italian bakeries here will make them up to family standards. :)

Tinsel! A horror show!!! How about it flying into your clothes as you try to put it on the tree? And then of course there are the pine needles that you continue to find throughout the year!!!

    :)

  104. TD213 April 22nd, 2011 at 1:36 pm

So to try and close the gap with Francessa, they hire probably the most hated columnist in NY? Someone who is even more full of himself than Francesa?

That’s going to over well. 1050 needs to realize they are never going to overtake WFAN while trying to beat them at their own game (controversial, veteran hosts like Lupica). They need to attack the younger demographic, which they have tried to do, but gotten frustrated that it didn’t yield immediate results so now they are trying to beat Francesa at his own game, which is going to fail.

1050 is much more basketball-oriented than WFAN.

  105. blake April 22nd, 2011 at 1:40 pm

Freddy was better than Dice K last year.

  106. YsGuy April 22nd, 2011 at 1:44 pm

” the only time slot where 1050 is better is the nights (Stephen A Smith/Daughtery), probably because of the Knicks resurgence.”

    +++++++++++

i think the mets and nets probably have alot more to do with that than steven a smith.

  107. Carlo April 22nd, 2011 at 1:44 pm

Blake – the conversation LGY is trying to rehash is when I said the sox rotation was better and deeper and he turned it into a freddy garcia vs dice k convo. Bottom line is, freddy garcia isn’t our 5th starter.

  108. YsGuy April 22nd, 2011 at 1:46 pm

personally i think that trying to appeal to a younger audience that doesn’t even know that am exists is futile.

  109. blake April 22nd, 2011 at 1:50 pm

“Bottom line is, freddy garcia isn’t our 5th starter.”

He was coming out of spring training…so much so that they skipped him twice. A lot depends on how Hughes bounces back, how AJ does, and whether Beckett can sustain his current level of performance. Dice K and Lackey aren’t any good and I honestly wouldn’t expect any better production from them than I would from the Yankees 4th and 5th guys whoever you want to label as that.

  110. tomingeorgia April 22nd, 2011 at 1:54 pm

Blake, If Colon and Garcia are our 4th and 5th, and their arms don’t fall off, they’re better than Dice K and Lackey.

  111. Carlo April 22nd, 2011 at 2:00 pm

Blake – I’m not going to get into this discussion because its fruitless and filled with “we’ll see’s”……except LGY who has seen all he needs to see already. Bottom line is, I think their rotation is better, more proven, and deeper at the major league level. That’s my opinion, it will be proven right or wrong over the next few weeks. Life will go on in the meantime.

  112. Carlo April 22nd, 2011 at 2:03 pm

Tom – they’re not our 4th and 5th starters right now. In fact, they may be our 2nd and 3rd. Nova is definitely in the 5 spot based on performance.
