Rained out: Carlyle called up, Noesi down
Today’s game has been rained out. Meanwhile, the Yankees have made a move.
About 10 minutes ago, Buddy Carlyle walked into the Yankees clubhouse and started unpacking his things into a locker next to Joba Chamberlain.
The Yankees didn’t announce the move initially because they weren’t sure Carlyle would arrive in time for the game. His flight had been cancelled and Carlyle had to drive down. He’ll join the bullpen, and along with Lance Pendleton, give the Yankees a pair of multi-inning relievers. Joe Girardi said Carlyle can go three innings if necessary, about the same as Pendleton.
To make room, Hector Noesi was optioned back to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Noesi had yet to pitch for the Yankees, and the team didn’t want to leave him sitting around with no work. He’ll move back into the Triple-A rotation.
To open a 40-man spot, lefty Jose Ortegano was designated for assignment.

Who dat?
Buddy Carlyle?
I hate april. Let them play damnit.
It’s not even raining, how could the game be rained out?!
Another game postpone due to rain?
This and the off-days have made for some lonely nights in April.
What am I supposed to do now?
Unreal!!
Mother Nature needs to leave the Yankees alone.
Why bring Noesi up if you were never going to use him?
“It’s not even raining, how could the game be rained out?!”
It’s raining here in Chicago if that makes you feel any better.
Now Buddy Carlyle can experience not pitching except in the most irrelevant of circumstances.
The Buddy Carlyle Experience actually has a nice ring to it. Consider it copyrighted.
There’s a wall of rain from Evansville, Indiana to the East Coast.
Now at least I can watch the Knicks without switching back and forth
Niblick April 22nd, 2011 at 6:12 pm
Does anyone on this site actually like any of the Yankees? It seems that lately most of the posts are from Phil haters, Gardner haters, Nova haters, and now Jeter haters.
======================================================
i agree niblick. i’ve been coming here for 3 1/2 years and while there was always alot of negativity, it has been constantly increasing and the positive posters have left one after the other.
Freddy getting skipped again?? I say skip Nova
in3 game series and it’s a rain-out the first game of the series MLB should have the teams play a DH in the middle game of the series
“So you are saying his UZR right now and other players UZR accurately portray their defense to date?”
LGY, No, I’m saying they accurately portray what they measure.
If you have issues with what they measure, I’m listening.
“I’m not the one that used a 16 game defensive sample???”
JF, I followed that up with roughly a 330 game sample from 2009 to now.
Jeter certainly doesn’t measure well in terms of range, but his profile improves as other factors are equated in, which is my understanding of UZR.
As I say, I’m happy for feedback as to its shortfalls and have specifically requested links or info to a superior method.
I genuinely asked. This is how productive discussion happens, but it requires participation and cooperation to go anywhere.
Chase, I’ve asked you some fair, genuine questions. You can’t strut and transparently avoid them at the same time.
Rained out lol that’s funny.. The last 2 years I’ve gone to games where I’ve sat through 2-3 hour rain delays and both times received nothing for them. This year, I hear of people getting tickets to new games and now they’re calling games when it’s not even raining yet.
Patrick April 22nd, 2011 at 6:14 pm

========================
are you in b’more? weather.com says its raining and the forcast is for heavy rain pretty much all w/e. plus its financially advantageous for the O’s to rain this game out.

********************************************************************
Sooner or later the Yankees will be forced to play a DH to make up for the postponed games.
Unless the weekend weather report in Baltimore in wrong, I think its very unlikely a DH will be played this weekend.
I took one look at the Balt weather forecast and threw my arms up in the air in disgust
oh I didn’t even look at the schedule.. they aren’t in ny.
Looks like the AFLAC Duck will be going silent for awhile. New commercials are now silent movie style.
this from a real, longtime yankees fan i respect alot:
“I thought Lohud was a Yankee blog, and I thought that people who posted there would generally support Yankees players, and Yankees icons like Jeter and Posada especially. But man, if it was up to some of these people, Jeter and Posada would be unceremoniously dumped post-haste. It’s sickening.”
i totally agree. having the occasional complaint is one thing but this blog has gone off the rails lately imo.
Jeter certainly doesn’t measure well in terms of range, but his profile improves as other factors are equated in, which is my understanding of UZR.
–
UZR weights all the factors the same: Double Play runs, Errors, Range.
I would place more weight on Ranges and maybe Double Play Runs over Errors. Jeter matches up well against other shortstops because he doesn’t make many errors. We’ve had this argument (not us in particular but those on this site) before, where I have always thought range is more important because having more errors doesn’t matter if you get to more balls overall than the other player.
From 09 to 2011, Jeter has the HIGHEST error prevention of any SS in the game. 2 more above even J-Roll. It probably doesn’t hurt that he has had excellent scoopers at 1st, but I think we can agree that jeter generally doesn’t make many misplays. This is propping up his lackluster double play runs above average and abysmal range factor.
Bummer….drove all the way down for the game. At least I got to see Camden Yards. It is a really nice stadium.
YsGuy,
I haven’t been here as long as you, but even in the last few months I’ve noticed the trend. People who complain about Girardi managing by his binder of stats then refer to their own binder of stats to make points. Me, I just like to watch baseball over a season. I root for the Yankees. I don’t hate anybody. I want positive outcomes for all our boys, and complete collapse for the Red Sox. Does that make me less of a fan?
“There’s a wall of rain from Evansville, Indiana to the East Coast.”
uh oh.
the blog gets ugly when it has to go two days in a row without a game.
who’s going to get beat up the most ?
jeter? gardner? posada? hughes?
i’m guessing jeter gets bashed the most tonight simply because gardner got it all day.
If 2 players make the same number of plays (get to the same number of balls) I’ll take the guy who doesn’t make errors. But I’m not going to suggest Jeter’s 6 errors are better against Andrus’ 20 errors if Andrus also makes 40 extra players. Heck, if Jeter makes 600 plays, and Andrus makes 601 plays, I’ll take the extra errors because those are balls he had a chance to play and might play in the future and errors are not all as bad as hits. (throwing the ball away can be bad, but if you look at bobbles on the infield/throws that aren’t scooped, most runners only advance 1 base. Singles that get through can advance guys 2 bases
Since I didn’t know there was a pitcher named Jose Ortegano until 30 seconds ago, I guess I won’t be upset about him being DFAed.
JF, why does Jeter’s lack of errors overcompensate for this lack of range? Is UZR non-weighted?
Put the numbers in context. How many MORE outs is an average SS producing via greater range than he is NOT giving up through more errors, particularly the bad throw kind that perhaps turn into 2 base errors?
Is there a simple system that shows the difference between range and errors and the numbers of bases saved or lost respectively?
I’m genuinely asking.
Randy-
It looks like I picked the right weekend to go Hiking.
I don’t know. You could look at Dewan Plus Minus which simply represents plays made / not made. UZR isn’t weighted.
“But I’m not going to suggest Jeter’s 6 errors are better against Andrus’ 20 errors if Andrus also makes 40 extra players.”
Neither am I, I just want to know where I can find the metrics that demonstrate this.
A rain out out after an off-day? This blog should degenerate into absolute hell within an hour.
Randy, this place has veen a wasteland for the last two days especially. It’ll be a garbage skow.
Here are the 3 year Plus/Minus leaders/lasters at SS
Jack Wilson +58
Tulo +50
Escobar +37
Izturis +33
Vizquel +33
Hardy +30
…
Julio Lugo -22
HanRam -29
Brendan Harris -36

Jeter is also 2nd worst in runs saved
That is 07-09

Jeter still reigns in one all-important category: Q Score.
Hence the big contract.
“It looks like I picked the right weekend to go Hiking.”
gb7 didn’t tell you to go take a hike did he?
actually you should take him with you and give him a club and a ball. that way it won’t be so embarrassing for him if someone sees him out there . he can say he wasn’t playing golf but just hiking.
not many people know it , but gb7 is very sensitive about being a bad golfer and it’s hard to pretend you are hiking at the blue monster or some other nice course.
Jeter still reigns in one all-important category: Q Score.
–
Is Q-Score really all important for a baseball player?
JF, except the people who quote all the different stats are being “scientific”. People who actually watch games are “anecdotal”.
Is Q-Score really all important for a baseball player?

“plus-minus explanation”
So just so I’m clear, and again, genuine question, if and when I have criticism I’ll voice it directly.
This is scaled system but applied subjectively, with an aspect of “judging” involved by whomever is logging that particular game, ala an official scorer.
Do I understand that correctly?
How about context?
is the difference between Tulo and Derek Jeter over 2007-2009 90 outs, or 90 runs, or neither?
Do I understand that correctly?

Yes, so is UZR.

Marshall is starting for Tampa, and you can always watch the Rays go down in flames in Toronto.
Stuckey,
I don’t think it has a direct comparison for runs or outs. Though I suspect the closest might be outs.

I should have factored in the scheduler bot playing them on the east coast for 90% of their games
Yankees gave a lot of money to Arod based on historical HR production.
I think it’s entirely possible they have a little more insight into what affects their bottom line than we all do.
GB-
And for an extra special treat the Sux game is on later.
Lester against Haren.
Just Knicks tonight. No Yanks.
Is Buddy Carlisle a lefty?
Range is overrated since you can’t put 2 players on the same batted ball and tell who gets to which and know at what speed the ball was traveling on each. Al this crap is so childish.
Some players are faster, have better arms, quicker, etc. BFD. I’ll take Jeter over most SS still. He falls into the “smarter” category, as he has learned his craft well over the yrs.
Crying about his hitting or fielding is absolute nonsense. If he doesn’t hit as good as even last year, ( which was a long way from “horrible” ) then I would simply say he is declining and it’s a natural thing. And, if that’s the case, he’s not gonna be playing another spot.
But, give these guys a fair chance and stop complaining about each and every one every game. A lot of pressure is being dealt with by them especially in N.Y. They all take turns being hot and cold.
Is Buddy Carlisle a lefty?
======
no
Yankees have played way less games than all the other east coast teams
You’re more likely to see a Yankees or Mets win tonight than the Knicks. And that inckudes a Yankee rainout
well tonight for me will be a little playoff BB & hockey …..the Bruin player giving the Montreal fans the finger last night was funny to watch

More explanation of the defensive stats
“I don’t think it has a direct comparison for runs or outs. Though I suspect the closest might be outs.”
I guess what I’m asking for is context. Scales are meaningless without context.
What does “90″ mean over 450 or so games? Is it a dramatic difference with significant effect on yearly team win totals?
The difference between World Class sprinters, for instance is fractions of the second. But baseball is a different game. I’m genuinely interested to know how the rightful Gold Glove SS and the relative butcher actually influence their team’s play?
Knicks will rout tonite…

–
Look at how the points are tabulated. You get positive points if you make a play most other SS’s don’t make. You lose points if you aren’t making the play. So thats outs (for plus minus).
For runs saved, its based on the run expectancy of the entire league in situations. So if Jeter makes a play that gets the out at 2nd instead of 1st, nailing the lead runner, he will get a bigger boost for that play.

Anybody who says “no way” is either exaggerating or clueless. I’ll assume you just hate the C’s, which is cool.
C’s vs Heat would be a great series. Either team could win that one – give Heat the edge bc of home court.
That offensive foul call when Jefferies had the layup was a disgrace. Stole 2-3 points from the Knicks.
knicks find ways to lose, celts find ways to win….big difference
The game of night is lakers game
Knicks are settling down. Stay calm mick.
BD (Boston Dave),
Of course i hate the Celtics. They are the dirtiest team in the league that get more calls then anyone except the Lakers. The Celtics played like garbage down the stretch and have looked like crap this series and without Perkins and with the way the Heat are playing I would be very surprised if the Heat lost

Yeah I didn’t see that.
ESPN commentators said Walker clearly grabbed ONeals arm, for what it’s worth… but I saw no foul.
ok lgy…sobermtrics on the knicks…key word sober

mick,
Give the calls the Celtics have been getting and give them to the Knicks and then tell me about finding ways to win

Josh Lueke, reliever for the mariners received in Cliff Lee deal, is a rapist.
Elijah Dukes wasn’t a very good role model.
=========================================
Plead to a lesser charge, got probation. Sure sounds like he did though. Someone in one the 2 organizations lied and tried to cover up.
Crawford said both Dukes and Young were a cancer on the team.
pierce allen and kg would disagree
11-1 knick run
new one
another missed call. Where was the travel call??? This is a bloody disgrace
How was that not a travel?

crowd is overhyped
”
MSG is overhyped. there is no mystique when their last title was in the 70s, another media creation and the building has much to be desired when you take an NBA game at other arenas like Staples or the new Amway Center

nobody remembers luis polonia? i was waiting to see if anyone had been a yankees fan long enough to reference him. he was arrested in 1989 for statutory rape in milwaukee while playing for the yankees. the girl was 15. he plead guilty and did 60 days. the yankees let him come back in 1990 then traded him after 11 games.
“The BIS Video Scouts are former ball players. So the people ‘judging jeter’ are ballplayers. Against a jury of his peers, he is found wanting.”
jerkface-
i’m calling your bluff.
name the players.
what former major league player is going to sit in dewan’s basement and look at every defensive play made in baseball ?
you know they are unpaid interns or working for peanuts.
nice try though.
