Early work and a lineup

When I got the park about a half hour ago, Gustavo Molina was on the field going through some catching drills just in case — you know — he plays in a game. Also, there was a big right-hander who looked a lot like Phil Hughes throwing in the bullpen. That should be Hughes’ final bullpen before he begins a rehab assignment. There is at least one sign that seems to indicate that rehab start will come Thursday with Scranton.

Here’s the lineup. No surprises.

Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Jorge Posada DH
Russell Martin C
Brett Gardner LF

I havent seen any prior threads.

    Any update on Montero??

    thanks

    from previous thread:

LGY, I see what you’re saying. But for me, there is no way.

Cano is the most entertaining player to watch for me. He’s constantly astonishing me with the things he is able to do on a baseball field.

You don’t see the kind of numbers he puts up from 2B very often, especially with his gold-glove defense.

He’s got such a cool swagger to him, plays so smoothly and makes it look effortless at the same time. He’s constantly getting better and is in his prime right now.

Ledger_Yankees Asked a scout about what he’s seen from Martin: “This is what he was.” If it stays that way, huge bargain for Yankees.

Ledger_Yankees Same scout wonders if Martin will be burned out by June at this pace. Yanks have played him a lot.

  4. mick April 25th, 2011 at 3:42 pm

Who will go when and if Hughes returns?

Apparently this scout doesn’t know how to look at a schedule.

“Who will go when and if Hughes returns?”

I think it’s a fair assumption it will be Nova if Colon continues to perform.

  7. mick April 25th, 2011 at 3:46 pm

although not much to say today i am impressed and quite pleased at the discourse here today, quite civil…

When Cervelli comes back Martin will get more rest. Girardi even mentioned sitting him for two games.

  9. blake April 25th, 2011 at 3:46 pm

“So if you were starting the playoffs tommorrow you would rather have Cano on your team then Felix?”

No I would rather have Cano and x pitcher they could get without giving up Cano…..than Felix and Nunez. Its JMO and yes I understand that Sabathia and Felix would be an incredible combo in a playoff series

  10. mick April 25th, 2011 at 3:47 pm

so nova is on the hot seat…funny how colon and garcia have vaulted ahead of him.

    mick,

7 ERA and options make it a no-brainer.

  13. stuckey99 April 25th, 2011 at 3:50 pm

Not to put too fine a point on it Blake, but Cano has been very uneven in the PS and he flat out stunk in 2009.

There you go again acting just like Girardi with the more ‘rest crap’…………..These guys make tens of millions of dollars they have had plenty of rest with these rainouts. I also assume they sleep at nite, isn’t that rest ? ?

  15. blake April 25th, 2011 at 3:52 pm

    Stuckey,

Did you watch the 2010 playoffs? Were you an Arod bashed because he “choked in the postseason”?

Oh Oh, I just changed my mind. Robbie is going to go off next post-season.

Cano only had a 1.288 OPS in the ALCS last year with 4 homers.

    1. Catchers need rest, they get beat up aily.

    2. Girardi said that not me.

“Did you watch the 2010 playoffs? Were you an Arod bashed because he “choked in the postseason”?”

    No.

Nor am I a Cano “basher”. I pointed out a fact, given the discussion has evolved to who would could theoretically be more valuable in the playoffs.

My larger point is I suspect you’d see more variation in PS performance by top offensive players than you would top pitchers.

  20. Vineyard Yankee April 25th, 2011 at 4:01 pm

That would be a very tough choice Cano for Felix. I would lean towards making that deal as Felix is young, a #1 and a top notch SP is extremely hard to come by. Extremely tough that one is.

  21. hardwired7 April 25th, 2011 at 4:01 pm

    Martin is 28.

When Jorge was 28, he played in 151 games. Hell, he played in 144 @35.

He may not keep up the offensive production, but he wasn’t brought in to be Joe Mauer.

  22. stuckey99 April 25th, 2011 at 4:02 pm

“Cano only had a 1.288 OPS in the ALCS last year with 4 homers.”

I’m aware. The Yankees team success in relation to Cano’s performance is my underlying premise.

I think the value of pitching is heightened in the PS.

Nova will need a good outing under his belt on Tuesday or he could find himself working out his problems at Scranton / Wilkes-Barre.

    Who is Homer?

  28. Vineyard Yankee April 25th, 2011 at 4:09 pm

One of my fine feathered friends.

  29. LGY April 25th, 2011 at 4:11 pm

A number of people have speculated that Martin’s performance fell off a cliff the past two years because the Dodgers ran him into the ground.

Catchers get beat up in general and I suspect even more so with a guy like Martin who plays so hard everyday.

The Yankees have a great offense, a good backup in Cisco coming back, and an even better backup waiting in the wings at AAA.

When the schedule gets tougher there is no reason to not rest Martin more to keep him fresh and healthy all year and into the postseason.

It would be extremely foolish to play him in 150+ games or even probably 140 games, which is why Girardi won’t do it.

  30. West Coast Yankee Fan April 25th, 2011 at 4:15 pm

I don’t think anyone has to worry about Girardi running anyone into the ground. He seems to skew to the conservative side.

That’s stupid, he hasn’t pitched but like 4 games this season. Talk about basing things off small sample sizes.
