    Should be 3 solid games this weekend, no easy call on win/loss… even Sunday should be fun.

    Lots of run support for the pitchers is what the doctor ordered.

    Colon lining up nicely for comeback player of the year. Him vs Sizemore this year I’d imagine?

    Same matchups on the same days even as was the series in NY. Except Colon is pitching instead of Garcia.

    Nice test this weekend for a Yankee team who has really hit there first road bump of the season. Either way the off day on Monday will be nice before starting another homestand where things have been good.

    I will try to sit up behind homeplate so I can get overhead shot of what his pitches are doing. What should I be looking for in regard to his slder? Where should it start and end? I don’t know a thing about pitching.

    “So, you are proposing the Yankees acquire Reyes and have 29-32 million dollars a year tied up at the SS position for the next 3 years? ”

    Not my fight and you are of course correct in believing Reyes is not in the cards, but if it turns out Derek is done the Yanks will have to face that issue.

    Man, I hope he isn’t done.

  9. GreenBeret7 May 6th, 2011 at 12:19 pm

    It will be interesting to see how Colon goes after the fastball hitting Rangers. I would think that he might want to use more offspeed braking balls rather than 90% fastballs.

    Nova has a sinker, but, not sure that I’d throw their 2 speed merchants (Borbon and Andruss) anything except fastballs up so they have a hard time bunting.

    I don’t need to substantiate my opinion. Congrats WCYF on the most arrogance possible in one post.

    *******************

    You are most cordially welcome. I’ll repeat my arrogance just for you. It’s my opinion that Cervelli and Peña are lousy hitters. Since they both hit at the bottom of the order when they play – it makes this team weaker at a time when we aren’t hitting well.

    Troll on.

    _____
    Do you have access to a radar gun? You should be able to recognize his FB and its velo which should be low to mid 90′s. However, his change and slider may have similar velocities but with the changeup a few ticks higher, as it is a power change. His slider is more like a slurve, thrown a little slower than his changeup, high 70′s. He will likely get more swings and misses on the changeup, which is really good and often freezes batters. Does that help?

    (repost)
    Larry – I saw the post, I was ignoring it’s stupidity. Nothing i said changed because of what happened. The Yankees best shot at signing him was trading for him, but not at any cost. Not with the future of the SS position in the franchise in doubt. If Jeter retired Nunez would be the starting SS… unless you think JJ Hardy is an answer.

    When given the chance, he went with something he was familiar with. He strung the Yankees along to get a better deal from Texas and jumped at first sign of an offer from Philly. He flopped from leaving years on the table to leaving money on the table, a clear sign he had no intention of signing with NY.

    I like how you waited until the new post came up, and then tried to hide all of your responses on the “last thread”. I would try to hide them too.

  19. YankeesNmore May 6th, 2011 at 12:47 pm

    Jose Reyes is probably looking at a 12-15 million dollar contract over a minimum of 4 years as a FA.

    So, you are proposing the Yankees acquire Reyes and have 29-32 million dollars a year tied up at the SS position for the next 3 years? lol

    Wasn’t “needed” then, not needed now.

    There is not a person on this PLANET (with the possible exception of you) who did not know for a fact Jeter would, eventually, re-sign with the Yankees.

    He wasn’t walking away 70 hits short of 3,000, and he wasn’t interested in playing for anybody else.

    He even refused to shop himself to other teams when he couldn’t get the contract he wanted from the Yankees…

    He even refused to shop himself after the Yankees, in his mind, insulted him by TELLING him to shop their offer.

    The idea that Nunez might been needed to start at SS this year is a joke.

    Yes that does help. The field at Lakeland has a sign in center that gives pitch speeds. Ill try to pay attention to it tonight. Hopefully this storm clears up so they can play tonight. The only thing about GMS is that you have to sit behind the scouts or pitchers charting pitches to have access to radar as they don’t have it on their screen.

    As I said, you should be able to recognize that pitch b/c it doesn’t have the clean delivery and speed of his fastball and his changeup is filthy. A slider “slides,” just add a little funky twist to it and you have the slurve. J-Ram isn’t very good at throwing it. In fact, he had to throw the slurve because he couldn’t spin the curve well enough, although he tried. His other two pitches, FB and changeup are plus plus. I haven’t seen him pitch since Charleston last year, but he was mowing batters down with the FB and especially the changeup. So, that other pitch is the slider/slurve. He doesn’t throw anything else. If you sit near scouts, you can just ask them how many sliders/slurves he threw and how they thought it looked. I don’t want to hijack your game with my J-Ram scouting needs, but any info is appreciated. :)

    lol, I am always on the lookout for those radar guns. They were out in full force last night at Manny’s game, with all the RS scouts joining the party. Those boys were oohing and ahhing over the way Manny could throw all his pitches from the same arm slot at such a range of speed differentials. Usually with better results those. Just didn’t have an location at all. Next time. :)

  44. G. Love May 6th, 2011 at 1:11 pm

    You can post what you want in here, but wasting your time, breath, keystrokes on Reyes to the Yankees is silly. It’s not happening.

    For it to even have a chance of happening it would be in the off season when he was a free agent and it would be because Jeter retired or had one of the worst seasons in Yankee history and the team lost all faith in him. Even in that scenario, I doubt it would happen since tying up that much money in SS is just dumb.

    It won’t happen this season and you’re just wasting breath imagining any scenario where it will.

    While I’m losing faith in Jeter’s offensive game, I’m still not convinced he can’t fix this. As the people who defend him say he’s a season removed from 2009 where he was excellent. That said, he’s been awful this year and anyone pretending he hasn’t been, along with Swisher, Gardner and Posada are not playing in reality.

    Losing Chavez is a blow because it takes any heat off of Jorge that was there. It also takes a better hitting option away from the DH role as I thought Chavez was a better pure hitter than Jorge is now. That said, staying healthy is key and Chavez just seems like one of those guys who can’t do that anymore.

    ID,

    good link. Jeter has always had an unconventional swing….it’s not an example to teach a kid to hit from. Arod’s is but Jeter’s isn’t.

    It has worked for him though because he keeps the bat in the zone for a long time and he’s extremely talented. One problem though is that because his swing is so unconventional and because he has multiple timing mechanisms….it may be more difficult for someone like K. Long to help him…..he can suggest things but he’s not a tinkerer like Alex is, he can’t incorporate new things likely and still feel comfortable. He may just have to figure it out on his own and if he is losing bat speed then he may just have to change his approach….as in he may have to guess more and be more selective.

    My one and only Jeter post today.

    Yes, by all means ask Brett. He will know. You can also ask him how his own slider’s progressing. I heard it looks pretty good. Changeup as well. Stoneburner is rehabbing in Tampa; maybe he will get a start down there before he returns to Trenton. Igawa is starting on Sunday b/c both Garrison and Stoneburner are down. I will make sure to miss that start. Sorry, Iggy.

    Hopefully for you, the TYanks will put it up. I do sympathize especially when we suddenly have all this obscene offense. But I still say although you may have some issues with OBP and K’s, those boys should at least be producing SLG sooner rather than later. And TYanks pitching should be a big plus over the course of the season. You may even get one of Kahnle, Burawa to add to your pen at some point.

    Thanks for the J-Ram and general pitching info/research. Much appreciated :)

    I don’t know if I would feel comfortable asking Brett about his own pitching, ill have to work my way up to that. I wish his brother was down here because he knows pitching and I could just ask him. I will however try to get an overhead video from tonights game of an at-bat and maybe some upclose of his delivery. They don’t have anyone liosted for the starter tonight but Ramirez went before Brett on sunday and Brett does pitch tomorrow so it would make sense it would be him pitching tonight. I think the TYs biggest problem is babip. They hit balls right to fielders constantly, never in the gaps or down the line and if they hit one down the line, the 1st or 3rd baseman always seems to be there to get it. I want to fly to Trenton to see my old team but I am dirt poor. Luckily there is you who can give me reports and they are covered on Twitter.

    Among qualifying SS’s, Derek Jeter is currently:

    * tied for next-to-last in doubles (2)
    * tied for last in triples (0)
    * tied for last in HR’s (0)
    * ranks 23rd of 25 in slugging % (.269)
    * ranks 20th of 25 in OPS (.577)

    And finally, among all players with enough at-bats to qualify, Jeter ranks 185th out of 191 in slugging percentage.

    That would be 184 guys better and SIX guys worse.

    Of course, Jeter makes up for his horrifically bad bat with amazing range on defense. :-/

    But ya… Jeter quite clearly has plenty left in the tank. I don’t see the Yankees in the market for a SS for quite some time. Let’s start him at SS and bat him leadoff every day for the next three years!

    Please. Open your eyes, folks.

  67. Irreverent Discourse May 6th, 2011 at 1:54 pm

    Larry – Since you seem determined to never shut up about this… what was your solution? What shortstop should the Yankees have signed instead of Jeter? Reyes is not and never was an option.

    ______
    Well if TYanks are hitting the ball at people, but they are hitting the ball hard, the hits should start coming.

    You need to save your pennies, girl. Trenton, SI and SWB beckon. Get here and I will take you to these parks. ;)

    Jeter’s LD% for May is @25%. Small sample, but he is hitting the ball harder and he is batting .300 over his last ten. Go away, troll.

    YankeesNmore,

    What kind of life is this you’re living? Seriously. I want to know. I’m a writer. You look delusional on here. How can you spend your whole day on here posting the same garbage? Has life dealt you a bad hand or something and you have nothing else to focus on?

    It’s bizarre. Your vendetta against the Yankees here is some kind of psychological malfunction. You should be studied and your brain should be put in a jar filled with Formaldehyde.

    You hate the Yankees, Jeter, Cashman, etc. We get it.

    Have anything new for us?

    Damn, it’s sad.

    ==================================================
    Reyes SHOULD be an option… There is story after story after story about the liklihood of his being dealt this summer, possibly to the Boston Red Sox, of all teams.

    But the Yankees are stuck with Derek Jeter… They can’t (or won’t) replace him with a quality player any more than they can move him from SS or move him down in the order…

    Hell, they can’t even pinch hit for him with the game on the line in the eighth or ninth inning… No matter how good the option off the bench might be (Chavez pre-injury), and no matter how hopeless at the plate Jeter currently is, the Yankees are STUCK with him.

    And they are decreasing their chances of winning close games, as a result.

    Jeter is hitting better lately yes. Hopefully he can maybe get a hit with runners in scoring position (in a clutch spot) at some point soon. I think it has been 2 years since the last time he did. At least it feels that way.

  73. Ys Guy May 6th, 2011 at 2:03 pm

    Pabe was very good at drawing the line. if he thought you crossed his idea of what was acceptable, he sent you a warning. whether or not you liked where the line was drawn, you were made aware of where it was and if you continued to cross it, you were out. this is what is needed here.

    chad is a nice guy from missouri who went to J school and learned how to report and write, and as such he adheres to the idea that the absolute minimum amount of censorship is desireable. while this is admirable, it is also naive. as the proprietor of a blog, he needs to pay more attention to the readability and conversation flow of the blog and less about free expression. In the absence of lohud monitoring the blog, he is left to make these decisions and seems overmatched or unwilling to take up the task. i feel for him but i think it would be a good idea for him to approach Pabe and seek some advice. after all he is the beneficiary of what pete did and might learn alot about the dynamics of a blog.

    in the end, this was pete’s baby and he tended it like a mother. at the game, in the airport, on vacation, it didnt matter, he was posting and reading and sending out warnings and banning as necessary to make it readable and interesting. like him or not, he would not have allowed this to happen to his baby. it seems as though chad sees this as a secondary part of his job as a reporter for the lohud, a paper which most of us would never have heard of let alone read if not for this blog.

    Sorry Larry but that does not qualify as an answer to my question. Who should they have signed since Reyes wasn’t even available at the time it happened? Typical, the loudest complainer has no solution to his complaints.

    I’m not interested in things you “don’t think they will do” because you opinion on that matter is meaningless. Who was the answer to the Yankees SS woes?

  89. GreenBeret7 May 6th, 2011 at 2:23 pm

    Tampa Yanks major offensive issues are that they have at least 4 non-hitters in the line-up every day. Higashioka, the Almonte boys, Grote and not counting the odds and ends. They have a choice of fair offense and no defense, or fair defense and no offense. Pity is that the almontes, Higashioka and Angelini were all highly touted, but, got lost in the Charleston shuffling.

    Jeter averaged 2 home runs a year in the month of April. April and May, on average has always been his worst months for hitting. He could have hit home runs, but, hard to say he was a power hitter (homers) anymore than O’Neill was a power hitter.

    What is $51mil to the Yankees? A drop in the bucket. Will it stop them from signing someone? If it stops them from signing Reyes then yes I am TOTALLY for that. Reyes is a bad joke. No hustle, bad legs, no plate discipline on a speed guy. Awesome combo.

    Jeters offense is irrelevant to the success of this team, once they get him out of the leadoff spot anyway…

    totally agree, and i received more than a few of those warnings.

    just want to add in fairness that chad did another thing besides go to j school . he also paid his dues in all those years at scranton. and it shows in the solid reporting.

    i do think he has to get more involved the way peter a. was, but it might just not be in his nature to do that. if he doesn’t, lohud is going to have to have someone play the heavy.

    one thing i think that regulars can do to slow down the invasive species problem is simply not interact with them.

    if they comment specifically to one of us , just don’t reply.

    Renteria has 42 at bats and every one of those numbers is over his career totals. I still take the chance with Jeter.

    It’s May 6, he only has like 160 something days to get right or get out of the leadoff spot before it matters.

    It’s amazing how Alex and Mark seem to have become the real leaders of the club house. The media is constantly going to them for authoritative quotes. I’ve gained a lot more respect for Alex as a result. He knows his stuff. Mark I’ve loved from day one, I was very glad to get rid of Giambi and have a great defensive and hitting first basemen again (like Tino even though he never one a gold glove).
