Yankees claim RHP Jess Todd, DFA utility man Kevin Russo
Here’s the announcement from the Yankees.
Earlier today, the Yankees claimed RHP Jess Todd off waivers from Cleveland. Todd previously spent 2011 with Triple-A Columbus, posting an 11.00 ERA in eight games without recording a decision (9.0IP, 18H, 11ER, 6BB, 6K, 2HR). He split 2010 between Cleveland (0-0, 7.50 ERA, 5G, 6.0IP, 9H, 5ER, 3BB, 9K) and Columbus (4-2, 3.31 ERA, 44G, 4SV, 49.0IP, 46H, 20R, 18ER, 18BB, 53K, 6HR). Todd was originally drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the second round of the 2007 First Year Player Draft.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees designated INF Kevin Russo for assignment.
The Yankees’ 40-man roster stands at 40.

According to Sherman they tried to trade russo in spring and no one bit, so makes sense that they would dump him. But why for Jess Todd?
Someone want to explain the Jess Todd move to me?
Maybe Girardi pushed for this move — his name lends itself to adding a ‘y’ at the end.

Ledger_Yankees Yanks make it official: Pena up, Chavez to DL.
Maybe they need a replacement body for some immenant pitching callup? Can’t imagine they keep running Logan out there like this for much longer…
He doesn’t throw particularly hard (90ish FB), so he probably has decent command:
http://www.fangraphs.com/pitch.....position=P
He has really good K:BB’s
Todd is a replacement type for Scranton, who along with Trenton has lost a few relievers to injuries.
why did they dump Russo I wonder?

I thought his compact swing would play at the major league level but I guess he just isnt strong enough defensively at any position.
GB….I read your comments earlier about Pete……..Two things come to mind, the confrontations between you and Old Pete were funny and very entertaining, also you put the wood to him and he never banned you….I think their are former LoHuders who are still making their way back from Siberia for far less…. I always thought there was a different standard for you when it came to rules of engagement…….Tin Cup also rattled his cage but you had a way of turning his cage upside down……I still laugh when I think back to those exchanges
“Following the 2008 season, Todd was named the 4th best prospect in the Cardinals organization and the 7th best prospect in the Texas League by Baseball America.”

russellmartin55 Today we celebrate 5 years in the biggs! I’m thankful for everything!
Russo plays no position well enough to keep him. He is adequate at 2B but below par at SS. We have better alternatives.

i wish i could post some of the emails that were sent back and forth between me and peter a.
we called each other some really bad names which is funny looking back because we weren’t kidding at the time
i did however ,unlike gb7, develop a respect for pete a. as time went on.
we exchanged a lot of info over the wang situation ,and i can say he’s a very solid baseball writer.
he knew a lot more about that situation than he let on.
From RAB – “The move to pick up Todd though is a strange one. Todd, once the St. Louis Cardinals’ minor league pitcher of the year, was a second round pick back in 2007, but despite minor league success, he has allowed 24 earned runs in 28.1 Major League innings. Still, he has posted over a strike out per inning and is only 25.”
“I thought his compact swing would play at the major league level but I guess he just isnt strong enough defensively at any position”
I’d rather have him on the bench than Pena if they are keeping Nunez up too. He can hit a little and could fake it defensively somewhere on an emergency basis until a move could be made if someone got hurt.
GB, agree about Todd as a fill-in for minors. Both Garrison and Stoneburner are out in AA. Trenton has Igawa starting, but I suspect they want him to at some point return to pen. We perhaps will do some reshuffling, perhaps between AA and AAA.
“Russo plays no position well enough to keep him. He is adequate at 2B but below par at SS. We have better alternatives.”
long term maybe….and he’s not a great defender, but he can hit a little…..though I don’t think he has much this year so far.

i think gb7 and peter a. would be fine if they ever met in person.
i think gb7 was just learning to spell back then and it ticked off peter a. more than it should have.

Russo’s D is not good at all in spite of the superior bat and he below average at SS.
*is* below average
“i think gb7 and peter a. would be fine if they ever met in person.”
Most internet interactions would be very in person because most people post things on the net that they would never say to anyone’s face, assuming they were sober.
Pat,
There were only a couple of things that got Ol’ Pete boiling and one was talking about his secret love for K. Jones. He now has that same infatuation with Heidi Watney. The other was calling him out about his obsession with Rodriguez. He hated when I pointed out his hypocracy between his treatment of Rodriguez and Giambi. Another was just mentioning jelly filled donuts. The only times I’d mention those things was when he got stupid, like claiming that the yanks were better off with Ransom at third over Rodriguez. Didn’t bother me that he disliked Rodriguez….only the reasons that he gave.
He’s another one on here that had an age obsession with posters. He tried to be so KEWL and with it that it got pathetic. I was curious about who he followed on twitter….go figure….young actors and Hollywood starlets.
“Maybe Girardi pushed for this move — his name lends itself to adding a ‘y’ at the end.”
almost anyone can have a “y” added to some part of their name in baseball.
if girardi read the blog he’d be saying “jerkfacey will come out of the slump he’s in when the weather warms up.”.

how could anyone get mad at the mention of donuts???
“how could anyone get mad at the mention of donuts??? ”
One word: addiction
Randy, another remark ike that and I’ll meet you out on the golf course and break your kneecaps with my driver and claim that it was an accident. Who could dispute that? Orville would come back from the grave and back me up.
I know its blasphomy but jelly donuts from Dunkin are really good…..I like their coffee too,……go ahead, call me a Red Sox supporter.
The jelly donuts and diet coke comments were classic…….Then Tin Cup would join in and you could visualize the steam coming out of his ears…..The below the belt shot would be ranking his beloved Patriot football team……But I stated he’d push with you & Cup but backed down when you two pushed back…….My greatest regrets was that he bailed before Alex had that great October in 09…….Some how I think he was keeping tabs here for awhile after his departure…After All his blog was a very quiet place for a long time……Then again this place used to have a 1,000 post per game……For me that’s sad…….Tin Cup, that Wang night was the high water mark here in my opinion……
Teams will always take a chance on a guy who averages more than a K per inning even though the rest of the numbers seem to indicate that this guy blows.
Pat, there were nights when game threads had so many posts that they had to be broken down into 2 parts, 1600 to over 2000 posts on that section alone.
Shocking number….Starlin Castro had a streak of 40 pitches without a swing and a miss.
For those of us that don’t recall these feuds between GB and Pete A (and others with him as well), are there any old threads we can read for those slow off days?
I don’t think Jerkface can slump.
He’s like a sentient algorithm.
“Randy, another remark ike that and I’ll meet you out on the golf course and break your kneecaps with my driver and claim that it was an accident.”
gb7-
you wouldn’t actually have to hit me. one look at your golf swing, and i’d be ruined for life.
orville must have had special golf therapy to be the only man alive to have seen you swing a golf club and then win a us open.
The onetime Pete took it on the chin was in the spring of 09 when Selena Roberts came out when the Alex PED story and Pete backed her to the hilt…..He was swarmed that day and slowly backed off,,,,Forgot about GB’s comments about the Kim Jones infatuation
Randy, I taught Orville everything he knew about golf. How to play under water, how to play on the beaches, how to sneak up in the woods on a wild golf ball, how to climb trees to retrieve your golf balls and clubs. He owes me everything.
Mike
Go back to when the Selena Robetrs stuff came out. Probably some fun stuff there. Any post by aroids cuzzin (or something like that)was good ole Pete himself.
Pete’s hatred for Alex was a bit strange.
Pete Abe was great. It doesn’t count that GB7 didn’t like him cause GB7 doesn’t like anybody.
Pat M beat me to it.
I type on this iPhone in slow motion.
“Pete’s hatred for Alex was a bit strange”
It was why I stopped posting here until he left.
I enjoyed telling Pete what a cliche he was for being a Springsteen fan and how he didn’t really like the music, he liked being that club. That would always cheese him off.
On the contrary, Chad and Sam are so nice I would never go after them.
They also do a fantastic job. As for the garbage going on in here, I can’t blame Chad/Sam for deranged individuals coming in here to do ridiculous things.
And to be honest this kind of garbage always went on here. I remember the savage beating Rebecca took in here night after night when Pete was running the show.
The bridge jumpers don’t bother me because I’ve been known to bridge jump in the heat of the moment at times. It’s part of being a fan.
The people who come in here 24 hours a day, it seems, to push some ridiculous agenda over and over again are what make the place unreadable. I just don’t get it. I seriously think they have many screws loose. Not to mention the group of posters who came in here with battles they were fighting from another board. When that stuff is going on, it’s unreadable and I check out.
“Not to mention the group of posters who came in here with battles they were fighting from another board. When that stuff is going on, it’s unreadable and I check out.”
I second that.
“For those of us that don’t recall these feuds between GB and Pete A (and others with him as well), are there any old threads we can read for those slow off days?”
i’ll look later , but a quick search found this:

http://yankees.lhblogs.com/200.....e-molinas/
peter didn’t mince words.
i have a hunch that”sociopaths” would fit more than a few of the new posters who have moved in.
“I second that.”
Yup.
G. Love,
thirded.
Thanks guys, I’ll check it out. I started around ST 09 on here so I vaguely remember the Selena Roberts crap on here. I do recall having this feeling that Pete never even like the NYY’s, it really came off that way by his tone, sometimes. He was extremely negative when he didn’t have to be.
It made total sense when it came out that he was a closet sox guy. I’ve got no animosity for the guy but there is something about a phony that you just can’t get behind.
The jelly doughnuts at the Doughnut Plant on the LES are out of this world.
All their doughnuts are actually.

I always thought of Kevin Russo as Randy Verlarde off steroids. Liked him and I wish the best for him going forward…he should call the Mets about their opening at @B.
randy,
There’s definitely some mental illness in here. Not in a funny cute “you’re so crazy” kind of way, but serious mental illness.
Seeing that behavior manifest itself in a board about the Yankees and baseball makes no sense to me. Usually those kind of crackpots prefer political places to spout their nonsense.
It’s bizarre, but frankly it’s part of the world we live in today. Sometimes, I feel like there are much more of “them” than us, if you know what I’m saying.
“…how to sneak up in the woods on a wild golf ball, how to climb trees to retrieve your golf balls and clubs. He owes me everything.”

now i’m beginning to understand why he had you sent pronto on that all expense paid trip to the far east.
I must say that I have never been to a political message board….but I can’t even begin to imagine what goes on there.

yup, i know what you are saying. i don’t know the answer for the blog, but in real life i simply take an old school stand and don’t let them cross too far into my life.
“I must say that I have never been to a political message board….but I can’t even begin to imagine what goes on there.”
From my experience based om the comments sections of blogs I read, they usually have a dominant political philosophy (right or left, although I think labels are meaningless at the point in time), but there are always a few trolls with an opposing p.o.v.

We could have had threads and people could have been easily ignored, old conversations finished without dirupting the rest of the board… but you all acted like children and ruined it.
There’s one new guy, I think his name is NWYankees Fan who actually had some interesting things to say, but he’s reposted the same exact post like 3 days in a row.
Once you post it, move on.
I mean, I’m fine with a quick repost if a new thread starts when you’re in the act of posting something you want to discuss, but copy and pasting the same exact post over multiple days is silly. Just move on and add to the conversation.

lol…
i’m hoping chad and sam are reading these comments. i like them although i hate what they are allowing to go on here. there is a very large amount of goodwill and people just want a blog that is readable and somewhat enjoyable, nobody is looking for an iron hand, but lines do have to be drawn.
i also wanted to clarify my earlier reference to chad going to j school. i did not mean that to slight him or say he had no experience. in fact i read his scranton yankees blog and when pete announced he was leaving, i posted on this board that i hoped they would give the job to chad before i heard it from anyone else.
i only meant that his perspective on censorship seems more in line with the basic journalistic view that censorship should be kept to an absolute minimum. i think chad is quite good at covering the team from the stadium, although i do sometimes note a lack of any content garnered outside the locker room and press box. my complaints about chad and sam have mostly to do with their lack of monitoring of the content of the blog .
